EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the July edition of our Artists Down Under magazine. What an amazing month of achievements our artists have had, I am so proud to be able to showcase their works to all our readers. This month Thysje Arthur is holding an exhibition at the Kaiapoi Art Expo, running on the 14th-15th July and Viki Murray’s Forest Bathing Exhibition comes to a close on 1st July. Ilona Abou-Zolof was chosen for a two week exhibition at Light Space and Time’s Online Gallery in June and Denise McDermott was one of four artists that recently held a two week art exhibition at the Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery in Gladstone, NSW. Trish Hoskins was awarded 4th Place in the Fusion Art’s 3rd annual Citiscapes competition. Most exciting is both our artists Andrew Haysom and Dennis Rickard were awarded a 15/15 score in the 2018 VAPS (Victorian Association of Photographic Societies) and move on to represent Victoria in the National AIPC competition later in the year, good luck to you both.

Trish Hoskin delights us once again with an interview from the very talented designer - Katie Pertiet. We get to experience another of the Redlands Digital Artists Group’s Collaborations in their Chinese Whispers series; this month’s theme is called “Downtown”. Four of our Artists Down Under members recently had a delightful meet up for lunch at Redlands Indiscapes Centre, some meeting for the first time. A lot of discussions were had, new ideas were tossed around and new friendships were made. Andrew Haysom delves into another of his inspiring and ever popular Photoshop Tutorials. This month we learn how to use HDR (High Dynamic Range) for that special pop to your images.

What a fabulous idea as we all know Christmas is only just around the corner. Care for Africa The raffle image has been kindly printed and donated by Print 2 Metal in Melbourne in support of the Care For Africa Foundation. A huge thank you to Marie and Frank for their ongoing support. The raffle image is titled “Water Is Life ll”. The image is a Unique State image and a collaboration between Nigel Lazenby and myself. Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Care for Africa Cont ...

WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research I When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. I create expressive photoart to raise awareness, and host events and sell products to raise money for endometriosis research. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations and procedures simply to function normally. An estimated 1,750,000 women worldwide are affected by endometriosis! An estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving these women vulnerable to poverty.

We collaborate at the photo session, agreeing which ideas we’ll play with. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth of the experiences of women with endometriosis. The women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. Forest Bathing

Forest Bathing invites the viewer along a tranquil pathway away from the other world and into the rejuvenating solace of the woods. Ambient bouquets of cedar, maple and moss permeate dream states long after immersion in the velvety greens. Viki Murray’s combination of sumi ink work and photography is a response to sensory replenishment through complete absorption in nature. Her ethereal imagery explores dream states, waking states and the spaces in between. I went to Kyoto and Nara in 2017 with the purpose of taking pictures in ancient gardens, walkways and forests. Time spent in the primeval Kazugayama Genshirin forest, Nara, was nothing short of transcendental. To be dually drained and invigorated by intense humidity, visually drinking in the intoxicating greens of maple leaves and moss while inhaling the musky scent of cedar and damp earth was almost sensory overload. For the longest moments time stood still as I was engulfed in a silence heaving with the loud presence of every pore of nature. I knew then and there the kind of images I wanted to create, the visual tale I wanted to weave. Ironically it was only once back in Australia, chatting casually in a cafe about the cleansing beauty of the Japanese forests that I was introduced to the term forest bathing, or Shinrin Yoku. – Viki Murray, 2018. Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). THE PRESENTERS Rod Morris - Nature Rod, from New Zealand, has been in film making and wildlife photography for many years, as well as writing and lecturing about New Zealand wildlife both nationally and internationally. Damien Caniglia - “Travel” and Tours Damien is a Brisbane based photographer who has guided groups for the last 10 years, mostly on the Kokoda Track as well as Southern Africa and Nepal. He focuses on capturing images that speak of the people and places he visits. Emeritus Professor Kenneth Collerson - Polarizer Light Microscopy: Rock Art Ken Collerson is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UQ. He has worked and photographed in many environments in Australia and around the world. Sebastian Michaels - Living the Photo Artistic Life Sebastian lives in the mountains of western North Carolina. He started many online courses relating to Photo Artistry and has approximately 16,000 students in 93 Countries. Sebastian will be speaking via an interactive internet connection. Dr Greg McMillan - Learning and Photography Greg’s interests lie in landscape, nature with an emphasis on birds, with a growing interest in monochrome, in particular high key images. Greg will give us a few hints on how to start a photographic business. Phillipa Frederiksen EFIAP MAPS SSAPS - Will lead a discussion around conceptual art portfolios Phillipa has been interested in creative photography ever since she became interested in photography and instigated the APS Conceptual Art Portfolio Awards. Julie Powell - Conceptual Photography Julie is a digital graphic artist and conceptual photographer. Her work has been described as Surreal, Fairy-tale, colourful, textured and eclectic. Julie uses the camera and computer as her canvas; her brush. Lisa Kurtz - Street Photography Lisa is a well-known and much respected Brisbane based conceptual photographer and experienced street photography tutor who runs workshops both in Australia and Italy. Robert Dettman AFIAP Architectural Art and Photography - Photo Walk Landscape and contemporary architecture are Robert’s inspiration. He enjoys creating portraits of notable architectural works in a style similar to that seen in the professional journals. Tina Dial EFIAP/s MAPS PPSA PSQA - Introduction to Action/Sports Photography Tina is the owner operator of Pawsnap Pet Photography and apart from personal bookings, she loves photographing dog sports. Another enjoyment is sports photography. She was involved with the Brisbane International Tennis in 2012, as well as several Masters events. Tony Bryce Scott - Portrait Photography “For as long as I can remember I would draw for hours on end. I can draw portraits and this naturally led into photography, but especially lighting. Digital kinda took over the drawing and now instead of using a pencil it’s a stylus in Photoshop.”

Light Space and Time Online Art Gallery was very pleased to announce that Ilona Abou-Zolof was named as the Gallery’s new featured artist and was promoted by the gallery in June for 14 days in the gallery’s Artist Showcase. Ilona Abou-Zolof is an Australian based commercial photographer. Ilona photographs people and family events. In addition, she is also an art photographer. Ilona was selected as one of the top twelve finalists of the gallery’s recent Solo Art Exhibition Series #9. The placement in this competition qualified her photography to be showcased in this feature. Ilona’s Artist Showcase feature will be promoted to over 350 major news outlets, with inclusion on Google News and Bing News. In addition, the gallery will also be featuring and promoting her photography in the gallery’s various social media networks for further exposure. Below are Ilona’s Artist Biography, Artist Statement and 5 images that were submitted to this competition. Artist Biography: I love photography because it makes me see the world, my environment and people in a very different way. I found myself becoming much more observant and appreciative of everyday things. I can see beauty in all around me. I would have walked past most before, once I start looking closer I can’t stop seeing more and more. When I started off I loved just taking photos of children and animals. I didn’t like posed images. I liked them more natural or candid, but I found that if you stick with only two subject matters you will run out of interesting photos very soon. I went out of my comfort zone and tried other things like landscape, seascape, portraiture, macro, weddings and street photography. Now I am at a stage where I think of myself as an image maker rather than an image taker and a digital artist. I will get an idea; take images I can use to fulfil my idea. I have as much fun taking the images as I have processing them in Lightroom and Photoshop afterwards. I use the digital tool to convert my photos into digital artwork. It is amazing what we can produce in the digital age and how much fun it is. Artist Statement: These images were taken in a very small bathroom. We filled the bath tub with water and added about 4 litres of milk. It was a great experience and we are very proud of the end result. I hope my images make you feel light, free and happy. Macleay valley community art gallery 4SIGHT ART EXHIBITION

DENISE McDERMOTT The 4Sight Exhibition featured four photographers with very different approaches to their art. Ranging from traditional photographs through to digital art, this exhibition explores ideas and concepts that start with a photographic image. The four photographers express themselves in different ways from each other but are united in their passion for photography. Photographic artist Denise McDermott is passionate about photography and she delights in taking it beyond the usual, often into the surreal. If not exploring fantasy worlds, Denise likes to show aspects of the natural world which go unnoticed. Digital artist Pamela Hudson is enjoying the freedom of expression that comes with the transformation of conventional digital photographic images into a creative art form. Janie News “What comes out of my camera is just the start of the journey; I then explore creative possibilities far beyond what I saw in my viewfinder.” The result can be a painterly style, abstract or a surreal scene from my imagination. Professional photographer and photographic artist Mike Kane says “photography is his life.” When not teaching or mentoring other photographers, Mike enjoys creating works of art to push his photographs beyond the ordinary. Both Denise McDermott and Pam Hudson are graduates of Photoshop Artistry and are current members of AWAKE “Living The Photo Artistic Life’ group run by teacher and mentor Sebastian Michaels. The 4Sight Exhibition was held on Thursday June 7 and ran until Sunday June 18. 26

KATIE PERTIET INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin In this interview I have been liaising with the incredibly talented Katie Pertiet, the creative owner of Designer Digitals. Katie came from a background in graphic design and set up her own store back in 2005. She is an extremely successful and prolific digital designer as well as licensing her designs on beautiful home decor products. Her website is a definite must see and hook up to her blog to be kept informed of all her exciting happenings. Her designs vary from beautiful botanical floral images to funky and terrific architectural, industrial line drawings. Her various kits include brushes, photomasks, elements and photo frames. The number of kits and varieties available in the Designer Digitals store is amazing. From the number of kits she produces and the amount of marketing that I know I receive from the store, it is easy to see why she is so successful. I know some of us would love to have the level of commercial expertise that she does. So, I asked Katie to answer a few questions and give us an insight to herself and how she can do what she does.

Katie, from reading your bio and subscribing to your site, you appear to be an extremely prolific artist. What is a typical day in the life of Katie? I start every day with a brief walk of the dog before morning coffee and heading into my studio. Every other morning, I head to the gym and then back to the studio to create. Since both my husband and I work at home, we like to do our weekending during the week when things are less busy, so we take time out of our days here and there to get other experiences and excursions in. How do you come up with your ideas? I generally start with colors or a theme and start collaging and it evolves from there. Many times, what I start out doing is not at all where it ends up going. I know seasons often influence my mood when creating, do the seasons affect your energy levels or inspirations for the creation of kits? I don’t know if so much seasons as the weather affect me. Rainy gloomy days seem to send my mojo down the drain and I do much better in sunshine and cool temps! Assuming that you are very proficient in Photoshop, are there any other programs that you favour for personal or business creations? I’ve been using Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator since the late 80s. They are pretty much my go to applications these days. At one point, I used Painter [don’t even know if that one exists any more] but that’s about it.

KATIE PERTIET INTERVIEW (Cont ....) I have followed your progress from being able to create amazing kits available on your site and what we were provided with in the Awake Course and see that you also create an amazing array of home and decor products with your art. How did you find the right company to market your products? I know a lot of us Australian artists would be grateful for any tips in this area? I started with exhibiting in NYC about 12 years ago and from there signed with an agent that handles working with all the manufacturers. There are only so many hours in a day and I knew I just didn’t have the bandwidth to be working with manufacturers too, so an agent is best for me. Your work is varied from floral to architectural lines and images, do you have any particular favourite or it just depends on what takes your fancy at the time you create? Largely it depends on my mood but more times than not vintage botanicals and butterflies always get me started! I also enjoy creating vector patterns in Illustrator and then bringing them into photoshop to vintage up a bit. Can you describe your office/creative area and what favourite things surround you to keep the juices flowing? I enjoy a large dedicated studio that we added to our home when we built it years back. It has vaulted ceiling with ceiling fans and windows all around making a happy, creative environment. I have found that when I am on a laptop or outside my studio, the creativity just doesn’t flow like it does at my desk.

When creating a new idea or kit, do you work at it till it is done because it grips you and you can’t leave it alone, or do you discipline yourself to set hours to create during a day? Sometimes I work until it is done but generally I am juggling various contracts and have to work on it in increments to keep up with deadlines etc. But I do generally have a 12-hour day with various hours taken out throughout the day for the gym, errands, excursions etc. How do you tackle work/life balance? I know a lot of designers work from home versus getting in the car and travelling to a specific office space or studio to work from - do you have a no interrupt policy from your family or you can manage designing in between everything else that happens around you? Well, this is something I have never really mastered. Work always gets in the way. And a mortgage is a pretty good motivator to keep it in the way. We are empty nesters now so it’s a little easier. We try to make an effort to take time away to make sure we don’t lose ourselves in work. Are you a super organised super tidy person or a whimsical take me as you find me kind of gal? I prefer to be organized and tidy but my overflowing to-do list doesn’t always cooperate with that. Recently I’ve been feeling a need to remove the excess of stuff and clean house and that feels real good and is helping me be able to stay more organized. On the other hand, sometimes I end up with piles of vintage books and source books all around my desk and then when I clean up I lose the ideas I had! So, I think I always need a bit of chaos if that makes sense. I found that really fascinating and some things to think about perhaps in trying to concentrate more on the work and think about maybe finding someone else to assist with the marketing side etc. I’d like to thank Katie for agreeing to interview for our magazine and her amazing work if you don’t already know can be found at:

R E D B U T T E R F LY A N D P O T S , M A LTA My Name is Margo Zerbes. I was born in Malta and as a family we immigrated to Australia when I was two years old. I have always loved photos, so I choose to repair and restore very old and damaged photos. This of course brings joy and satisfaction to me and more importantly to those who thought their beloved photos were gone forever. As a bonus I could do this while still bringing up my family, a win-win situation. For about the last 40 years have had a lovely and rewarding time doing photo restoration work, firstly by hand, retouching and recolouring photos, until discovering Photoshop which opened a brand new and exciting world of photo manipulation. During 2006, after buying my very own camera, I became a self-taught photographer and started accumulating loads of lovely photos which then led me to taking the next step into photo manipulation. I decided to take it even further, especially with all the photos I had accumulated, this led me to wanting to put my skills of digital imaging to work. What better place to start than joining Sebastian Michaelsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; great Photoshop Artistry course and just fell in love with the whole process and continue to learn new things day by day. At aged 65 I decided to qualify as a Graphic Designer so as I could do even more with photography. This opened up a new journey of writing, illustrating and publishing such as childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s books, photo books and family history books for others. The family ‘Box Brownie’ was replaced with plastic mould-made cameras for the three of us kids (that produced a square image of highly dubious quality) while we were on holiday in South Australia. I can still remember the excitement I felt. My first ‘real’ camera was an SLR and with the many repeat images I compulsively took ‘just in case’, I would be a little deflated when I picked up the photos from the Chemist shop. Surely there was more … And there was … having to wait that second or two while my first digital camera ‘did it’s thing’ … and so many out-of-focus images. (Forward several years … my current ‘fave’ is ‘Slow Shutter’ app on my iPhone!) Between the first digital cameras and the latest iPhone apps, was the digital SLR (pretty basic), then a better one (moderately basic), a little ‘snapper’ for macros and also a ‘mirrorless’, all of which I continue to use today. The great thing though -– I am today as excited by photography for my digital artistry as I was with my first, very own camera way back when …

ADU MEMBERS MEET UP IN THE REDLANDS, QLD By Maureen Maxwell Four ADU artists (and two significant others) recently met at Indigiscapes for lunch. This area is a beautiful protected park preserving the native flora and fauna of Redlands City which is 25 kilometres east of Brisbane city. Phillipa and Gunnar Frederiksen from The Gold Coast, Jacquie and Ned Goss from Melbourne as well as Pam Henderson and Maureen Maxwell enjoyed a wonderful few hours together. Of course there was a lot of interesting talk, and sharing of ideas, about photography and photo art, as well as many other aspects of our creative endeavours. What a joy it is to meet with people who share similar interests! We also discussed working together on a specific theme. More about that in the August edition of the ADU magazine. Both Phillipa and Maureen are members of the APSCON 2018 organising committee to be held at the Gold Coast. APSCON is the annual convention of the Australian Photography Society. This year our theme is ‘Photography as Art’ with a significant focus on the creative aspects of Photo Artistry. Sebastian Michaels, the creator of the Photo Artistry and AWAKE international courses and Facebook groups, will be one of the Keynote speakers, through an internet connection. The Artists Down Under Group is a sub-group of the AWAKE Community. Our own Julie Powell and Phillipa will be giving presentations on Photo Art and Concept photography. They will also be participating in a panel discussion after Sebastian‘s presentation on ‘Living the Photo Artistic Life’.

FLOWER My name is Marjorie Lord and I am a Photo Artist living in Flaxton on the Blackall Range of South East Queensland. My oldest son described me the other day as the most social introvert he knows which I thought was rather funny. Prior to discovering my passion for digital imagery and portrait photography, I have worked in our family cattle station business in Mount Isa, Queensland and raised four sons with my husband. Throughout my entire life I have always been involved with some form of art but life, businesses, 32 years of motherhood meant that creating art had to often be put aside much of the time. I have a strong inner built need to create things and as a result a visual arts project has never been far away from me. Now all our children have grown into well balanced adults and leading their own lives, I am embracing being able to be artistically creative every day. I think I can be really brazen and say “It’s all about me now”. I grew up in the very small regional town of Julia Creek, Queensland, my father and mother as a secondary job were the local town wedding, school functions, and Debutante photographers. However during my childhood I had no personal association or experience with photography other than to watch my parents. I remember as a little kid watching all the beautiful Debutante girls gliding into our home wearing their white and long wedding like ball gowns with satin gloves that seemed to wind their way up and around the Debutante’s arms just like a tree snake slithering quietly up into a tree. This was a most fairy tale princess moment for a dreamy little girl as she peered from behind the curtains watching them enter one by one. Artistically though was another story, I have always been creative and practiced some form of art since early childhood ranging from puppetry, drawing, painting, linoleum printing, silver jewellery, making Blah Blah dolls, crafting and anything else that artistically came my way. As an adult I studied Fine Art externally through Open Universities Australia, self-taught myself Photoshop and other software. Once our remote region of Mount Isa surpassed the old unreliable dial up internet and we entered into the world of luxury, aka, ADSL broadband, well a whole new world of learning had now reached my fingertips. No words can express to you how unreliable, painful, frustrating and slow the old dial up was. With my new fast reliable internet in place, I have literally watched hundreds of hours of YouTube tutorials along with enrolling into many online courses such as The Arcanum for photography and the Photo Artistry courses of Sebastian Michaels. The Photo Artistry lessons and Awake have been a wonderful learning journey of creativity and the meeting of likeminded artists has been an extraordinary experience. I picked up a DSLR camera for the first time around the middle of 2013 with an intent to do some real photography work. Why I decided to learn I really don’t know, I think it was just one of those moments where I thought I would like to learn how to photograph using manual settings so I did. Thinking about it now I had started doing a lot of Photoshop digital work, so I guess photography was more than likely the next progression to creating my own imagery for the story telling process that I like to do in my artworks. The camera has become my paint brush or my medium of choice. I don’t really see myself as a photographer but I do as a photo artist. I just happen to use a camera as the first part of the creative process in creating pictorial narratives. Marjorie Lord

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION HDR IN ADOBE CAMERA RAW AND LIGHTROOM CLASSIC By Andrew Haysom

The dynamic range in an image is the range of light levels from the lightest part of the image to the darkest part of the image. The human eye can see a dynamic range many times wider than even the best current DSLR, the eye and the brain does a magnificent job of recognising and distinguishing the many different levels of brightness in a scene – your DSLR is much less capable. Therefore in a single exposure of a scene with a wide dynamic range you will inevitably lose detail in your highlights or shadows (or both). High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography involves taking multiple exposures of a scene (e.g. one at normal exposure, one brighter exposure and one darker exposure) and then using software to blend them together. HDR got a bit of a bad name a few years back because photographers (and yes, I was one of them), used HDR to create really bad, unnatural looking, sometimes almost cartoon like images. It has also become a lot less necessary with increasingly capable camera sensors, more people shooting in RAW and software that is becoming better and better at pulling detail out of the highlight and shadow areas of a photo. There is however still a place for HDR where you have wide dynamic range and it can be made to look natural.

Taking the Images Most DSLRs will allow you to “automatically” take these multiple exposures. Look for a feature called “Exposure Bracketing” or “Auto Exposure Bracketing”. Different cameras will allow different numbers of images in the bracket (eg 3, 5, 7 or 9) and you will be able to select the exposure (number of stops) gap between images. On some cameras if you also set the “drive mode” to delay or burst mode the images will be taken with a single press of the shutter. Most HDR software will align the images well, but your results will be much better if your camera is solidly mounted (eg a good tripod). In good light it is possible to take “hand-held” bracketed exposures. Good HDR software will also perform “ghost removal” to eliminate objects that have moved between the bracketed images. However the less movement between brackets the better your result will be. Consider using a remote release and mirror-lockup (or LiveView) to eliminate all camera movement. Ensure that your camera is in “Aperture Priority” or “Manual” mode. You want all the bracketed images to have the same aperture and vary the shutter speed. Shooting in RAW is highly recommended - there is more dynamic range and detail captured in each image in RAW mode.

Processing in Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom Classic In Adobe Camera Raw version 9 and Lightroom CC 2015 Adobe added a HDR Merge feature that allows you to merge your multiple exposure brackets. This functionality is much better, and creates a more natural looking result than the old version that still exists within Photoshop. Figure 1 is the final result of a HDR merge of 7 exposures, of an image taken inside the old Woodlands Homestead in Woodlands Historic Park in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The room is quite dark, but with brighter light coming in the window, and extremely bright light sources from the two brightest lamps. For the cameraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s normal exposure, detail was lost in the window and both bright lamps were just white blobs.

To capture detail in the lamps, I had to go right down to 5 stops under exposed, so the exposures I used for the merge were -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, normal and +1.

The merging process is quite simple. First load all of the Raw images into ACR.

The bracketed exposures

Select all the images in the Filmstrip and make sure that you have enabled Lens Profile Corrections and Remove Chromatic Aberration (these are the only adjustments I would make at this stage). Click the drop-down menu right next to the word Filmstrip at the top of the Filmstrip and select Merge to HDR.

After a short processing delay the HDR Merge Preview window will be displayed. I usually leave Align Images and Apply Auto Tone and Color Adjustments ticked.

If you had objects that moved between the bracketed exposures you can select one of the Deghost levels, if you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you can leave it off. If you choose to Deghost, some more processing will occur and if you have Show Overlay ticked you will see a mask overlay indicating where the software found, and will try to remove the movement. When you click the Merge button, the software will present you with a standard file save dialog box and you can choose a name and location for the merged file. The merged file will be a Raw file in the Adobe .DNG (digital negative) format. You can Alt(Option)+Click the Merge button to accept the default file name and store it in the same location as the bracketed exposures. Merge prieview window

The new merged Raw file will be added into the Filmstrip of ACR, and once processing has finished you can now process as normal using all the standard methods, but with a file that will have much more dynamic range (details in the highlights and shadows).

Lightroom Classic As I am sure most of you know, the Develop module in Lightroom is essentially Adobe Camera Raw, so the process is almost identical in Lightroom.

To perform a merge in Lightroom, select all the bracketed Raw files, rightclick and choose Photo Merge / HDR.

Summary So, next time you find yourself in a challenging light situation, consider shooting some brackets and trying a little bit of HDR. Have fun!

Total Strangers Although photography is not my profession, I am formally trained and have been taking pictures for many years. If I was asked what my “specialty” was, I would have to say 35mm film black and white street photography. So with this in mind this body of work is a giant step away from my usual practice. However, I find that creating sets of images in different genres and styles strengthens my ability to make images as a whole. For this body of work I decided to move as far away as possible in the attempts to strengthen my digital artistry skills. DIGITAL FABRICS By Sandy Boles

Like many Digital Artists/Photographers I am constantly thinking of ways that I can use my images. For a few years now I have been getting fabrics printed and then making the fabric up into skirts, blouses, cushions, book covers and bags. I have used both Spoonflower in the USA and Digital Fabrics in Erskineville NSW. Digital Fabrics are now my absolute favourite. Over the last few years they have introduced natural fibres such as cotton, cotton linens and microfibre towelling. As many friends and family started requesting gifts made from these prints I have just had 2 metres printed with various images and sized for both small shoulder bags and journal/note book covers. Needless to say, I have a stash ready for Xmas gifts. Their web site www.digitalfabrics.com.au provides easy to follow instructions on the sizing of your images and I was very happy with the colours of the finished printed cotton linen. Also available is a sample pack of the fabrics available and a suggested list of their suitability for either clothing or furnishings. To personalise the bags I made use of the width of the fabric by getting my signature printed so I could use it as labels. Sandy Boles
