Welcome to the May edition of the Artists Down Under magazine. I am so thrilled to be able to showcase to you the amazing talents of our artists from Australia and New Zealand. This month Trish Hoskin introduces us to the amazingly talented designer Julie Mead. Julie takes us on her fascinating life’s journey - a must read interview. Judy Lapsley Miller gives us her Top Picks in PhotoArtistry Resources, excellent information for those just starting out. Andrew Haysom delves into some more of his Photoshop Inspirations, this month featuring Lumenzia, one that I am definitely going to try out

The Redlands Digital Artists Group show us another of their very talented artists Collaborations in their “Chinese Whispers” series, this month being “The Hidden Room”. We get taken behind the scenes of a Milk Bath Photoshoot by the very talented photographers and Artists Down Under members - Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch. It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world.

I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting. Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board to work out how I could fit into their organization. In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org.

THE PRESENTERS Rod Morris - Nature Rod, from New Zealand, has been in film making and wildlife photography for many years, as well as writing and lecturing about New Zealand wildlife both nationally and internationally. Damien Caniglia - “Travel” and Tours Damien is a Brisbane based photographer who has guided groups for the last 10 years, mostly on the Kokoda Track as well as Southern Africa and Nepal. He focuses on capturing images that speak of the people and places he visits. Emeritus Professor Kenneth Collerson - Polarizer Light Microscopy: Rock Art Ken Collerson is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UQ. He has worked and photographed in many environments in Australia and around the world. Sebastian Michaels - Living the Photo Artistic Life Sebastian lives in the mountains of western North Carolina. He started many online courses relating to Photo Artistry and has approximately 16,000 students in 93 Countries. Sebastian will be speaking via an interactive internet connection. Dr Greg McMillan - Learning and Photography Greg’s interests lie in landscape, nature with an emphasis on birds, with a growing interest in monochrome, in particular high key images. Greg will give us a few hints on how to start a photographic business. Phillipa Frederiksen EFIAP MAPS SSAPS - Will lead a discussion around conceptual art portfolios Phillipa has been interested in creative photography ever since she became interested in photography and instigated the APS Conceptual Art Portfolio Awards. Julie Powell - Conceptual Photography Julie is a digital graphic artist and conceptual photographer. Her work has been described as Surreal, Fairy-tale, colourful, textured and eclectic. Julie uses the camera and computer as her canvas; her brush. Lisa Kurtz - Street Photography Lisa is a well-known and much respected Brisbane based conceptual photographer and experienced street photography tutor who runs workshop both in Australia and Italy. Robert Dettman AFIAP Architectural Art and Photography Photo Walk Landscape and contemporary architecture are Robert’s inspiration. He enjoys creating portraits of notable architectural works in a style similar to that seen in the professional journals. Tina Dial EFIAP/s MAPS PPSA PSQA - Introduction to Action/Sports Photography Tina is the owner operator of Pawsnap Pet Photography and apart from personal bookings, she loves photographing dog sports. Another enjoyment is sports photography. She was involved with the Brisbane International Tennis in 2012, as well as several Masters events. Tony Bryce Scott - Portrait Photography “For as long as I can remember I would draw for hours on end. I can draw portraits and this naturally led into photography, but especially lighting. Digital kinda took over the drawing and now instead of using a pencil it’s a stylus in Photoshop.”

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). JULIE MEAD OF E-SCAPE N SCRAP By Trish Hoskin

A lot of you would be familiar with the Digital Store of E-scape N Scrap and having purchased from the store as well as catching up with its creator and owner Julie Mead via our Awake group and various chats over the last couple of years, I thought it would interesting to hear all about Julie’s life. I asked Julie to give us some background about herself and how she started the Store. I am originally a city girl growing up in several large cities before getting married and settling down with my husband on his family owned, 6 generation farm. The farm was originally homesteaded at the beginning of the 1900s and the history surrounding it is fascinating. Stories about Indians, prairie fires, railroads, horse-drawn wagons, droughts, wars, blizzards, and one room school houses have been recorded in journals kept by family members through its 125 years of existence. When I first moved to the farm I taught kindergarten plus a few, various other classes at a small local school for 32 years before retiring and turning over my keys to my daughter to take over my position as the kindergarten teacher. During my teaching years a co-worker introduced me to Photoshop, as she thought this might be a program I would enjoy. I had always loved technology and would help her teach other teachers on how to incorporate computers into their classrooms. Photoshop was not only a welcome challenge, but I felt compelled to learn more and more about this program. Unfortunately, when Photoshop was just getting started the help was very limited so it was mostly trial and error. Along the way I discovered digital scrapping because of Photoshop and began creating with digital scrapbook pages. (I had been a traditional scrapper for a very long time before digital came along). As I progressed in digital scrapping I was needing items that were more like my traditional scrapbook supplies so I began to create my own elements and papers. In the summer of 2004 I decided to put together a CD of products that I had created and sell them on my very own website. I spent my summer vacation learning about website building, creating my product to sell, coming up with a store name and learning all about website hosting. I am often asked about the name of my store and how I came up with E-scape and Scrap. E-scape - The “E” stands for electronic or digital and “scape” refers to photo such as landscape but it is also a play on the word “escape”. Scrap - referring to scrapbooking. So, to me digital scrapbooking was a wonderful place for me to escape and relax and create! 2018 will be the online store’s 14th birthday! Things have changed dramatically in those 14 years. I am thrilled that I no longer have to create CDs for my customers! Downloading and uploading is so much faster now. When I first started I only had dial-up internet, as did most customers, so you can imagine how slow and frustrating it was! As the years progressed I began to add a few designers here and there to the store. We now have over 30 designers which bring a unique variety of products for our customers. In this day and age it is so easy to live anywhere in the world, even on a farm, and run a website. Keeping in touch with designers and customers is always an email or a Facebook Message away. In fact, one of my favorite parts of being in this business is working with people and making friends from all over the world! My friends that live in our rural community are always amazed at the contacts I have made from just about all corners of the earth.

My Photoshop skills just naturally led me to work with photos. I started with my own family and as others saw those photos they began to ask me to take photos for them. I finally decided to make this a business and charge for the work I was doing. So I juggle the store and my portrait photography business on a daily basis. I keep super busy but I do love the flexibility I have working from home. In fact, I really hesitate to call it work. Since it all involves being creative it is nothing but FUN to me. Is it a massive amount of work ensuring that your presence in the “digital world” is high profile. I know you send out emails everyday with Blog freebies and updates, do you have a big IT team behind you or is there a lot of effort directly from yourself? Julie said she laughed at this question as with most things I am sure you just have to do what you can. Julie said ..... I have a hired web developer who takes care of my store’s back up and checks out its security every month. She also spends time in the store cleaning things up and making sure it runs at its peak. Other than that it’s just me, LOL! I wish I had a big IT team but then I might lose the feeling that this online store is like a hometown store in my rural community. I want the opportunity to personally work with the designers and the customers. I want to reassure them that I am here to help them out when needed. I want the opportunity to know my customers on a personal level. If they could actually walk into my store I would love to offer them a cup of coffee and sit down for a chat. I would love to listen to their stories, catch up on how their kids are doing, and find out how life is treating them. Online may be a bit different than a real brick and mortar store but I hope that in some small way I can convey that feeling to others.

What a great lady and I know I have always felt that personal touch happening when I have contacted the store to ask questions etc. Julie’s average day would be a lot different from those of some of us – living on a farm, running a business both for Photography and Digital Art as well as caring for family, and making time for grandkids. She sounds super busy starting her day at six am, exercising and getting ready for the day, sorting emails and helping customers and then ensuring she spends lunch with her husband and son coming in from working on the farm. Afternoons she often spends organising photoshoots, working on previous photos taken and store work, newsletters and advertising etc and also keeping up with various digital classes for her own growth and then always finds time for her grandchildren after school who also live on the farm. After dinner she often goes back and does a couple of hours work but also ensures she spends time with the family. Makes me feel exhausted thinking about how she fits it all in, but I guess like she says and I know too when you are doing something you love it never feels like hard work. SNOW PRINCESS My passion for photography started back in High School, but back in those days, living in country Victoria, we never had the opportunity or funds to allow me to pursue it any further, so I became a hairdresser, then went into bookkeeping, married, had a family ..... life kind of got in the way. It was only a few years ago that I built up the courage to enrol and complete an online diploma in photography, that’s when I became totally hooked. I joined an online photographic group that helped me to learn more of the basics then found the current groups “AWAKE and Kaizen” that I currently belong to comprimised of extremely talented and supportive artists with a fantastic teacher and mentor, Sebastian Michaels. This has totally changed my life and given me courage and confidence to further pursue my dreams. I have been lucky enough to have my art appear in the fineartphotography magazine and in December 2017 to be chosen as a Featured AWAKE Artist for the Photoshop Artistry Facebook Group. I was recently thrilled to be chosen as the Featured Artist in the February 2018 edition of the worldwide magazine “LIVING THE PHOTO ARTISTIC LIFE” with a 6 page spread and one of my images making the front cover. The Boofheads (Kereru) SOFTWARE & HARDWARE My essentials: • Photoshop CC (although you can get a long way with PS Elements). Another free alternative that I haven’t used is Gimp. • Lightroom Classic (or Bridge), for organizing your assets. I don’t recommend Lightroom CC unless you have an excellent internet connection with no data-cap and the funds to pay for GBs of online storage. Photoshop files are huge and you will also start acquiring thousands of image assets. Better to save locally and use a backup service instead. • Wacom Intuos Pro drawing tablet. • Calibrated monitor, especially if you’re making prints. • A grunty computer with a ton of disk and ram, especially if you want to make big images (though many people happily create on their iPad or smart phone). • A camera - even your cellphone camera is good enough to get started with. I still occasionally use images taken on my very first digital camera - a 4 MP Nikon Coolpix 4500. Though I’m now glad to be shooting with full-frame mirrorless cameras. I was one of those people who grew up believing the story I told myself that I wasn’t creative. On top of that I narrowly defined what ‘creative’ was. Pretty much everything in the artistic fields I could not do. Over time as I learned to embrace a broader concept of creativity through my work with developing teams and leaders I also threw myself into my love of photography and the natural world. In particular the world of horses, another long time passion. In an effort to explore the beauty of the horse I travelled not just to my own back paddock, but around the world to capture horses in different environments. My aim was always to capture not just the physical beauty but also the spirit and the connection I felt. And then I was introduced to Photoshop Artistry and discovered that I was creative after all. SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION LUMENZIA By Andrew Haysom In the March 2018 issue Bill Oldham introduced us to Luminosity Masks, and explained that they are masks based on the luminosity or brightness of your image. He also explained how they can be created from the RGB Channels in Photoshop. I am a huge fan of Luminosity Masks and use them all the time, it adds tremendous power to be able to restrict adjustments to particular brightness areas in your image. There are many add-in products available to make using Luminosity Masks easier and this is a review of the one I have chosen, for reasons I will explain at the end of this article, called Lumenzia. Lumenzia is an add-in panel for Photoshop that adds a huge amount of functionality, most of it around Luminosity Masks and Selections. This is what the Lumenzia panel looks like.

The Mode button at the top left defaults to “Preview” and that is the mode I use the panel in most of the time. I will briefly explain some of the other modes later in the article. The Create buttons are where you select the type of mask you want, the three columns of buttons labelled D, D2, ... D6 and M, M2, ... M6 and L, L2, ... L6 are for Darks, Midtones and Lights respectively. For example if you choose L the lighter pixels in your image will be more selected, the darker pixels less selected. As you progress down the L buttons towards L6 the brightest pixels become progressively more selected. When you press one of these buttons, Lumenzia will show you a visualization in the image window of what the mask will look like, and will create some temporary orange layers in your document. If you don’t think the mask is what you want, you can press a different one of the Create buttons.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..) The a, b ... e and 0, 1, ... 10 keys are another way to choose the mask you want based on zones of Luminosity, like the Ansel Adams Zone System. You can also use the Zone Pickers or the Range button to create a mask based on tones (or a range of tones) that you select in the actual image.

Figure 2 - Lumenzia in action The bottom layer of the temporary orange layers is a Black and White adjustment layer that you can use to affect the mask based on the colours in the image. For example, if I wanted to affect the selection of the sky in the image in the picture above, I could slide the blue slider and the visualization of the mask changes as you do it. The top layer of these temporary orange layers is a Levels layer that you can use to modify the overall lightness / darkness of your mask. Once you are happy that the mask is what you want, you click one of the buttons in the Apply section of the Lumenzia panel. “Sel” applies the mask as a selection. “Mask” applies the mask to the active layer. Then there are buttons for Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, Selective Color, Hue/Saturation, Color Balance and Solid Color – these will create the appropriate adjustment layer with the chosen mask applied. Then, as you make adjustments in the adjustment layer they are only applied to the area of the image you chose when creating the luminosity mask. Note, if you choose not to proceed, click the “X” button towards the top-right of the panel to remove the temporary orange layers. The buttons in the Refine section allow you to further refine your masks by adding a group with a mask, based either on a manual selection, any temporary orange layers you have present from the Create buttons, or from a colour selection (for the Colour button). I also love the Vignette, Dodge & Burn and Sharpen features, as these simplify these processes greatly for me, I use at least one of these buttons on nearly every image I process, even if I don’t use a luminosity mask. There are four other modes available via the Mode button. “LIVE-M” creates a mask directly on the active layer without the preview and temporary orange layers being displayed. “LIVE-S” creates a selection without the preview and temporary orange layers being displayed. “If:Under” and “If:This” modify the BlendIf sliders to perform the masking rather than creating an actual mask. There are many other features of Lumenzia that I am not going to go into here for fear of confusing everyone, but let me just say that the “tooltips” you get when you hover the mouse over any button are great, and offer multiple variations of nearly every button via modifier keys.

So why do I like Lumenzia? I have tried a number of other Luminosity Masking panels, including two other purchased ones, and I find Lumenzia the easiest to use, and the most reli able. It is as fully featured as any of the others Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve tried. It is not expensive â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at only US$40 it is very affordable and great value for money. It is upgraded frequently, and new and improved features added regularly, and these upgrades are made available at no cost (through five major releases so far). There is an excellent user guide, and many explanatory videos on the various features, and examples of use. Many key videos are linked in the PDF user guide. Lumenzia is written by Greg Benz and is available from his website

He also has a free Luminosity Masking panel available if you decide not to purchase Lumenzia, but my recommendation is that the money for Lumenzia is a good investment. FROG 2 RED I am a digital artist and photographer who has worked in the photography industry for many years. I started in the film days and progressed to digital. I am also a photography coach and critic. I held this position with Digital Photo Secrets for over 4 years. I joined Photoshop Artistry and then the Awake Program and am now a member of Kaizen. It is through this that I have discovered my love of digital art. My motto is “Healing Art - bringing the outdoors in”. I have learnt that photography and digital art can be very healing, and a lot of people don’t have the access to beautiful scenery as I do, so I want to bring it to them no matter what environment they live in. I donate work to hospitals to help brighten the lives, lift the spirits and help heal those who are either patients or visitors. I began to experiment on my own with photoshop and then came across Photoartistry and realised that this medium would allow me to express my feelings and emotions through my work while also still capturing purely photographic images for those who prefer that. I have won numerous contests and been featured in a number of publications. Even in my dark moments I was able to create and show others how I was feeling through my art and it has now given me the motivation to keep moving forward, being open to where my art might take me. However, I eventually managed to entice my creative muse out of deep freeze, and add my own interpretation. We hope you enjoy our collaborative efforts. GOTHIC NYMPH

My name is Edwin Leung, a Hong Kong Chinese migrated to New Zealand some twenty years ago with my family of four. I am lucky to be here and have never looked back hence. I always regard myself as a photographer who loves to shoot whatever is in front of me. Lucky me, New Zealand does provide me everything I want, and in great abundance, be it lovely sceneries, nature, flowers etc., but above all, beautiful people around me including those strangers on the street. Yes, I like taking photos of people, and being a Chinese, I can have, apart from Western models, Eastern ones as well. They have good stories to tell. I am, however, not a good story teller and so to express what I have in mind, I have but to resort to image manipulation that aids myself to unleash a freedom of expression to my heart’s content. “Awake” came to me sometime ago, and I joined the group in the hope of transcending my work to another level, and hopefully, myself too, from a photographer to an artist. The road ahead is still long and winding, and I shall tread on it the best I can. Edwin Leung

MILK BATH PHOTOSHOOT By Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton

We are regularly meeting for tutorial days and photoshoots. We always think of something new to do to extend our comfort zone. We decided on a milk bath shoot and we are lucky enough to have our own model, Effie Lmn, who is willing to try new things with us. We all collaborate and come up with new ideas. We thought we would get a large blow-up swimming pool. Ilona went on e-bay and got a good price on a large pool. When we unpacked it, the back yard was nearly not big enough for it. We had no pump and decided to blow it up, but we ran out of puff so soon, especially because we got the giggles. Even an electric pump from my son took forever. When it was blown up we saw the size of it and just gave up because we would need too much milk and water for it. We moved to my little bathroom and used Almond milk because that smelt better but it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t white it was yellow. We mixed up some cornflour to add to it as we thought that might make it whiter. That was a bad decision, the cornflour curdled and came out as clumps on Effieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clothes. We drained and rinsed everything ready to start again. We used normal milk .... 12 litres of it!!!!

MILK BATH PHOTOSHOOT (Cont....) Some of the issues that we came across: We needed a ladder to shoot from above and the bathroom was so small that we could not both stand in there together, so this became one at a time shooting. The light in the bathroom was not bright enough but we didn’t want to have strobes. Electricity and water don’t mix very well, and we didn’t want to fry our Effie. We used LED lights powered by batteries, we made sure they were stable, so they didn’t fall in the water.

We tried wide angle lenses to get Effie fully in the shot from top to toes, but we discovered that there was too much distortion. We went back to our normal lenses. We were all laughing so much from all the problems. We thought we would not get any decent shots, but we were very surprised how they turned out. Recently we did it again at Effie’s request. This time we were better prepared, and it took half the time. Straight into the bathtub and Effie changed many times. The lesson from this, even if you don’t know how to do it, just try it, and you will get better and have lots of fun trying. We did. Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton
