Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

8

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board You can see my gallery of images at https:// to work out how I could fit into their organization. worldpix.org/galleries-2/ In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.

My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.

Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. From amateurs with just a cellphone to professionals with the latest gear, the participants in the AoB photo challenge bring many and varied perspectives to the weekly challenges. The challenges are designed to develop skills for wildlife and nature advocacy through visual storytelling, creativity and learning new photographic techniques. If you want to start using your photography for good causes, do join us. Details at https://www.artbyjlm.com/art-of-birding-2018.html

Week 40: Conservation In Action (Story) Tell a story about a local conservation effort. For inspiration, it’s Save Kiwi Month and World Habitat Day.

Week 41: Abstract (Creative) Use natural patterns and light to create an abstract image. Bonus challenge is to create an abstract piece by layering and compositing multiple images.

Week 42: Leading Lines (Technical) Pay attention to lines and curves that you can use to draw attention to your subject. Using leading lines is a classic composition technique and one we should all have in our repertoire.

Week 43: Song (Creative) A healthy ecosystem is filled with birdsong, but how to illustrate that in a photo? That is this week’s challenge!

Week 44: Signs Of Spring (Story) Will it be a burst of kōwhai blossoms or a spangle of clematis panicu lata? What heralds spring for you? For those in the northern hemisphere, you might like to swap this challenge with Week 18 “the fungus among us”.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge Photographers Photos from Prior Weeks

This young female falcon is the 2018 offspring of two falcons that were raised at Wingspan in Rotorua and released into the wild. The birds took up residence in a busy part of Whakarewarewa Forest that is used by walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders. Parts of the mountain bike tracks were closed to give the birds a break from defending their nest area. The young falcon is still in the area and can be seen from time to time.

ALI OPPY INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin

Recently you would have seen some of Ali’s work featured on our Facebook Pages and the Photo Artistic Life Magazine. Ali’s latest amazing set of Zodiac images fascinated me so I asked if she would share a little about herself with us. Ali Oppy also known as ‘Mystic Sparrow’. I was born in New Zealand. My interest in art was always something I enjoyed doing and have tried many different art forms. My most enjoyable form of art was spray paint art where I would do live shows to upbeat music and paint in front of a live audience. After years of doing this it was time to move to something new. I soon discovered the digital world of creation and was inspired by many artists that created this form of art. Are you in both the Awake Group and Kaizen and how long for each? I enrolled in the Sebastian Michaels Artistry course in October of 2017 and I was encouraged to also do the Awake course which I joined in January of 2018 What has been your best part of coming to a group such as Awake etc? The part I enjoy of the Awake group was making friends of other artists on the course. Learning to use Photoshop as I had previously only used an online image editor, and doing the course helped me think of creating in a whole different way and showed me different techniques I was not aware of, as I am previously self-taught in digital art. Recently we have seen the amazing series of Zodiac pieces, each as spectacular as the other, Where did you get the idea for this and a bit about how you constructed them - i.e. programs used, elements used (designers etc.)? The idea of doing a zodiac series was not a new idea for me as I have done a couple of other sets before. Since I have been doing the Awake and Artistry course my style has changed through the knowledge I did not have before. So, I decided to do an improved version on my past sets to which I am now happy with. The program I use to create my art is Photoshop Elements. The elements I use to create my images are ones I have bought or got from various stock sites like DeviantArt and course content. My models that I use are with permission from some DeviantArt stocks, but my most loved models to work with are from the wonderful Colby Files collection. When you came up with the idea for creating this did you have to do a bit of research into the traits of the Zodiac’s signs or were you readily familiar with each to know how you intended to create each one? When I created my Zodiac series I was already familiar with the basics of each Star sign. I created them with the idea of fantasy and surrealism in mind. I wanted them to look totally different from the conventional style of zodiacs and that someone could have as a print without relating to it necessarily as a zodiac piece if they so wish. And of course, they all have a sparrow hidden in each image as that is my known trademark.

36

ALI OPPY INTERVIEW (Cont ....)

Do you have plans to use them for a specific purpose such as an exhibition or sell to a gallery or privately etc, or simply that you found it a challenge to complete the series. Currently I have no immediate big plans for my zodiacs, they are all available on my Fine art America site, My Artboja site and My society 6 site where they are available as home decor and art prints, Kitchen accessories like coasters and chopping boards. It was a long haul but I mostly enjoyed the challenge on creating each one with my new knowledge of the Photoshop program and the help of the Awake and Artistry course. So a big thanks Ali, that provided a really great insight to an amazing series of works. I must pop over to your sites and have a look at your work there. We look forward to the next series you may decide to create.

THE SWIM

My photography has taught me to see the world differently, to look for the beauty in the things I see every day and that most people take for granted or in fact don’t even see. I want other people to be able to see what I see, though my pictures. Sight, seeing, is all about light. How can I show people this interaction of light and dark that in this busy world most people hardly even notice; and how can I make my camera, and by extension my audience, see what I see? How can I take a picture that allows others to see what I do? Sometimes I start out with just my camera and an open mind, and sometimes I start out with an idea in my head of what I want to try to create. But the issue is always, how can I make this picture talk to whoever is seeing it, so that it tells the story of the world I was trying to portray. I played with painting when I was younger; oils, acrylics, watercolours, pencils; but I was never able to capture what I could see in my minds eye. With my camera, and photoshop, and patience, I can finally show the world what I can see, with both my eyes, and my heart. John Kelly

APSCON 2018

‘PHOTOGRAPHIC ART - A NEW CONCEPT’ By Maureen Maxwell The Australian Photographic Society (APS) annual Convention was held at the Home Of The Arts (HOTA) on the Gold Coast, Queensland from the 11th September for 5 ½ days. The organising committee did an excellent job working tirelessly over 15 months. Attendees generally thought it was a great success. In a break with tradition, our committee decided to motivate the audience to think differently about their creativity when pursuing their photography. Our approach was summed up in the title. ¬ Phillipa Frederiksen, who, like myself, is a graduate of Sebastian Michaels’ advanced photo artistry course ‘AWAKE’, chaired the committee of which I was a member. We explained Sebastian’s approach to the committee who were receptive to the idea of incorporating these concepts, as they were in line with our theme. The committee recognised that most people around the world now regard themselves as photographers with their smart phones. The APS, and camera clubs around the world, have started to recognise this significant change in society, and the need to adapt to this new world to remain relevant. Two other graduates of Sebastian Michaels’ ‘AWAKE’ course contributed to the Convention. Julie Powell (as a presenter) and Barbara Dudzinska (attendee), and their participation contributed to its overall success. The program also catered for different genres e.g. Nature. We brought in a highly regarded Nature photographer from New Zealand to give a relevant presentation that was well received. Feedback indicated we achieved our objectives. I believe we have stimulated and guided many attendees to embark on a creative journey that will enhance their photography and enable them to stretch their minds in different artistic directions. There were three innovative events, and a workshop, relevant to this article. A presentation by Sebastian Michaels and another by Julie Powell plus a discussion panel comprising Phillipa Frederiksen, Julie and a contemporary/conceptual photographer from Brisbane, Lisa Kurtz. (Relevant links at end of article)

66

APSCON 2018 ‘PHOTOGRAPHIC ART - A NEW CONCEPT’ (Cont ...) SEBASTIAN MICHAELS Sebastian prepared a 45 minutes presentation on video titled ‘Living the Photo Artistic Life’. This was followed by an Internet linkup to Sebastian in the US for a 45 minutes Q&A session. During the video Sebastian took us through the process used to create a complex and detailed image by another AWAKE student. It involved processing the original photo and then adding many different layers with a variety of textures, layers and elements that were added in a very subtle manner with different blend modes, and masks, at varying opacity. The final work was impressive and artistic. During the Q&A session he elaborated further on ‘Living the Photo Artistic Life’ and how it can change the creative journey for photographers and artists. Many people around the world have found the ideas put forward by Sebastian to be inspirational, and subsequently discovered a degree of creativity they never thought possible. The questions from the audience were insightful, relevant and enthusiastic, whilst showing a significant degree of motivation to delve further.

THE EXPERT DISCUSSION PANEL The three panellists approach their photographic conceptual art in different ways and this inspired an illuminating and active discussion with many penetrating questions from the floor. Our aim with planning this discussion was to stimulate discussion of people’s perception of photographic art. The questions mainly centred on Conceptual Photography and Photo Artistry. Many of the questions indicated a willingness to acknowledge change in the photographic world is inevitable. We found many traditionalist photographers were impressed, and surprised, with both Sebastian and Julie’s presentations and the Discussion Panel. Whilst there were similarities in the definitions of the Conceptual Photographic Art given by the panellists, there were also key differences. This highlighted the creative opportunities open to photographers. Each of the panellists set about their planning, creating, processing, and finalising their conceptual works in various ways. In some instances it can take up to two years from the initial idea to completion.

67

APSCON 2018

‘PHOTOGRAPHIC ART - A NEW CONCEPT’ (Cont ...) JULIE POWELL - CONCEPTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY We invited Julie to come from Melbourne to tell us about her journey in Conceptual Portrait Photography, her themed creations, and to participate in the discussion panel. Julie is a graphics artist with broad experience in many genres within photography, photo artistry, and conceptual/contemporary art. Her journey has been varied and interesting. Many of the themes Julie works on are based on contemporary issues in modern society. To balance these serious themes she also works on many whimsical themes based on fairy tales e.g. ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Julie told us that, like many photo artists, she keeps a detailed journal of thoughts, ideas, and new directions to explore. Her ideas may take some time to come to fruition. The amount of work she puts into planning her themed work is significant. Whilst the actual photography session may only last a short time, the pre-work involves planning each image, researching locations, finding appropriate models, timing and sourcing props. Julie spends many hours browsing through op shops and other relevant venues to find exactly the right elements and costumes for each image. She will have previously developed a sketch and detailed list of requirements - there can be 50 elements in a single image. If she can’t find exactly the props she wants she will either commission someone else to create them or do it herself. Julie took us through her journey as she developed her skills and direction. She joined a number of Sebastian’s courses in 2015. She did his advanced 12 months ‘AWAKE ‘ Course and now belongs to the expert photo artistry group called KAIZEN. She also listens to viewers’ comments during an exhibition, as they can be most enlightening. Children often understand the theme, and the message behind it, quicker than their parents. An interesting discovery! Her presentation was excellent, well received and served as a springboard of creative ideas for those attendees who intend to participate in the APS Conceptual Art Portfolio Awards (CAPA).

68

APSCON 2018

‘PHOTOGRAPHIC ART - A NEW CONCEPT’ (Cont ...) PHILLIPA FREDERIKSEN - CREATIVE iPHONOGRAPHY WORKSHOP. Phillipa has been well known in amateur photography circles for many years. Her general photography has won many International and Australian awards. She was a very early adopter of digital photography and immediately saw the creative opportunities available. She also creates many artistic abstract works from her original photography. Her workshop at APSCON was designed to stimulate interest in the genre and to take attendees through the creation of an artwork on her iPhone and iPad. Many people attended the workshop and displayed considerable interest in the technology. They took copious notes about the apps to use, and were keen to ‘get creating’ by the time Phillipa finished. The technology is only limited by one’s own imagination. Phillipa also won a CAPA Silver award at APSCON for a Conceptual portfolio she had created.

The APSCON 2018 Committee was made up of a number of people with a variety of skills. Each person was a joy to work with. We had lots of laughs whilst pulling together to create a wonderful and innovative event. The following links may be of interest to you: Quill and Camera – the main website of Sebastian Michaels.

SPRING

I am a photographer from Melbourne, Australia. More recently I have started delving into digital art and I love using image manipulation as a means of further enhancing my photos. I have a love of travel and photography is a natural extension. I particularly like venturing to remote areas and immersing myself in the culture and environment. My camera is always at my side as I capture everything from images of everyday life to landscapes and especially wildlife. While I view photography as a means of capturing special memories the addition of digital art allows me to add a special dimension to my work as well as explore my imagination.

REDLANDS DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell

CHINESE WHISPERS #11 “LOST TREASURE” STAGE 1

STAGE 2

FINAL STAGE

This month has probably been our most difficult challenge so far, but it was so much fun to work on. Gerard Whelan started us off, and when I looked at it I felt mentally at a loss. But after a few hours, and a number of false starts, I arrived at the second iteration, which I was reasonably happy with. I also knew our editor, Pam Henderson, would work her magic to finish it off. The three of us find we learn from each other with every collaboration as each of us work in various ways, and this month was no different. Pam did not disappoint. Apart from all the additional and appropriate elements, she changed the overall toning to the beautiful golden colour that she achieves in so many of her own creations. We hope you enjoy.

FOGGY NIGHT

I love photography because it makes me see the world, my environment and people in a very different way. I found myself becoming much more observant and appreciative of everyday things. I can see beauty all around me. When I started off I loved just taking photos of children and animals. I didn’t like posed images. I liked them more natural or candid, but I found that if you stick with only two subject matters you will run out of interesting photos very soon. I went out of my comfort zone and tried other things like landscape, seascape, portraiture, macro, weddings and street photography. Now I am at a stage where I think of myself as an image maker rather than an image taker and a digital artist. I will get an idea; take images I can use to fulfil my idea. I have as much fun taking the images as I have to process them in Lightroom and Photoshop afterwards. I use the digital tool to convert my photos into digital artwork. And I pushed myself again beyond this point of comfort. I started to learn how to use digital painting to convert my images and composites into paintings. I enjoy learning new ways of making my art different. It is good to evolve and move on, not to get boring or bored. It is amazing what we can produce in the digital age and how much fun it is.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION USING GUIDES IN PHOTOSHOP By Andrew Haysom

Using guides on your Photoshop page can making placing objects and lining up elements in your artwork, or just organising the structure of your artwork, much easier. In order to use guides, we will normally want to have the rulers displayed along the vertical and horizontal edges of our document. To view and hide the rulers, press (Ctrl/Cmd)+R, or use the View / Rulers menu command. To change the unit of measure for the rulers, right-click anywhere on one of the rulers and then choose the unit of measure from the displayed drop-down list.

[Fig 1 – Ruler unit of measure drop-down] To move a guide, activate the Move tool (V), then move the mouse pointer near the guide. When the mouse cursor changes to two lines with arrows pointing up and down (for a horizontal guide), or left and right (for a vertical guide), click and drag the guide to the required position. When initially creating, or moving a guide, if you hold down the [Shift] key, the guide will snap to the tick marks on the ruler, making it easier to precisely position the guide. To change the orientation of a guide (i.e. turn a horizontal guide into a vertical one – or vice versa), activate the Move tool (V) and position the cursor as above as if you were going to move the guide, then hold down the [Opt/Alt] key and drag the guide. Figure 1

114

To precisely create a single guide, use the View / New Guide menu command. The dialog box shown in Figure 2 is displayed, choose Horizontal or Vertical and type the required position in the Position field, followed by the required unit of measure.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..)

[Fig 2 – New Guide dialog] To create a grid of guides in one command you can use the View / New Guide Layout menu command (see Figure 3). You can specify the number of rows and columns you want, the size of the columns (they will be equally distributed if no size is specified), and optionally gutters and margins. You can also specify if you want any existing guides removed or not. You can also save custom presets if you create a guide layout that you think you might want to re-use in the future.

Figure 2

[Fig 3 – New Guide Layout dialog] To temporarily hide the guides (as opposed to removing them), press [Cmd/Ctrl]+; (that is hold down the Cmd or Ctrl key and tap the semi-colon). Repeat the same keystroke to display the guides again. To remove a single guide activate the Move tool (V) and position the cursor as above as if you were going to move the guide, then drag the guide back onto the ruler. To remove all guides, use the View / Clear Guides menu command.

Figure 3

The View / New Guide From Shape menu command allows you to create guides based on an existing object (eg Shape, Text or other layer-based element) in your image. First select the layer containing the object, then use the New Guide From Shape menu command. In the example shown in Figure 4 I have created guides based on a text layer. This command will always add to existing guides rather than replace them.

[Fig 4 – New Guide From Shape] If you wish to more easily have things align to your guides, make sure that snapping is enabled with the View / Snap menu command, and make sure that Snap to Guides is enabled using the View / Snap to / Guides menu command. The behaviour of guides when you resize an image is determined by the View / Lock Guides menu command. By default the guides are unlocked, so that when you change the size of an image, the guides are moved/resized proportionally to the change in image size. If you wish the guides to remain with their current size and position lock them using the View / Lock Guides menu command prior to resizing the image. Figure 4

You can also change the colour of your guides from the default cyan colour in the Guides, Grids & Slices section of the Photoshop preferences.

POST CARD FROM YESTERYE AR Greetings to you from Perth Western Australia my name is ALBaMass and I’m a mature female freelance photographer and published photo artist. Thank you very much for your interest, generous support and feedback especially on social media networks - I am very grateful to be a featured artist here at ADU, it is truly an honour. The past year has been very full and challenging but most of all positive... pursuing a productive, healthy and meaningful Photo Artistic lifestyle. Always learning new techniques and crossing boundaries takes me to new and exciting directions exploring styles I am interested in and inspired to pursue - it is always fun...everyday. My three passions family, photography and digital photo artistry all contribute to my creativity. I want to share these images and ideas, tell stories and listen to them. I wish you all happiness and harmony in all you do and pursue.

Al BaMass
