An engagement ring is where the bride’s journey begins, so why not choose a style and colour that you really love rather than opting for what everyone thinks you should have. Our ring with a twist article offers some fresh ideas that may tempt brides to be. In our real life bride spread we spoke to Samantha Parry about her fairytale wedding to Wales International Footballer Paul Parry and we’ve found some fairytale cakes, flowers and favours for those who want their own fairytale wedding. As many will know the Wedding Fayre season is well under way and many brides to be will be in attendance at many if not all these events, we have brought you a selection of the best to add to your diaries.

THE COOLEST THREADS Style, cut, texture, drape, and season are all-important factors in determining the best fabric for a wedding gown. The same style dress can look and feel quite different, when made in a variety of fabrics. Some fabrics cling to the body, while others stand away. Some are cherished for their crispness, others for being light-as-air. Silk—a natural fibre that exudes an innate quality of refinement—is undoubtedly the most sought-after and cherished wedding dress material, noted for its resiliency, elasticity, and strength. Silk threads are woven to create various fabrics, including satin, a densely-woven silk notable for its super-lustrous gloss; duchesse satin, a blend of silk and rayon that is lighter and more affordable than pure silk satin; charmeuse, a lightweight silk satin with a more subdued lustre; and shantung, a low-sheen textured silk characterised by a rough, nubby quality. Then there are the gauzier, textured silks like chiffon, tulle, and organza— all used in multiple layers for gown skirts since they are transparent, but lightweight.

The Fabric Hotlist Batiste: A lightweight, soft, transparent fabric. Charmeuse: A lightweight, semi-lustrous soft fabric, that is satin-like to the touch.

Jenny Packham

Chiffon: Delicate, sheer, and transparent—made from silk or rayon, with a soft finish; often layered because of its transparency, making it popular for overskirts, sheer sleeves, and wraps. Crepe: A light, soft, and thin fabric with a crinkled surface. Damask: Similar to brocade with raised designs, but woven in a much lighter weight. Duchesse Satin: A lightweight hybrid of silk and rayon (or polyester) woven into a satin finish. Dupion: A finish similar to shantung, but with thicker, coarser fibres, and a slight sheen. Faille: A structured, ribbed finish like grosgrain ribbon; usually quite substantial. Gabardine: A tightly-woven, firm and durable finish, with single diagonal lines on the face. Georgette: A sheer, lightweight fabric often made of polyester or silk with a crepe surface. Illusion: A fine, sheer net fabric, generally used on sleeves or necklines. Jersey: A very elastic knit fabric; the face has lengthwise ribs and the underside has crosswise ribs. Moire: A heavy silk taffeta with a subtle, wavy design. Organdy: A stiff transparent fabric.

Ian

13 Organza: Crisp and sheer like chiffon, with a stiffer texture similar in effect to tulle, 7. Jenny Packham but more flowing; popular for skirts, sleeves, backs, and overlays.

Veronica Di Santo

Peau de Soie: A soft satin-faced, high-quality cloth with a dull lustre, fine ribs, and a grainy appearance. Pique: A lengthwise rib weave in medium to heavy weights; wrinkles badly unless given a wrinkle-free finish. Satin: A heavy, smooth fabric with a high sheen on one side; very common in bridal gowns. Silk Gazar: A four-ply silk organza. Silk Mikado: A brand of blended silk, usually heavier than 100-percent silk. Silk-faced Satin: A smooth silk satin, with a glossy front and matte back. Shantung: Similar to a raw silk, shantung is characterized by its slubbed texture. Taffeta: Crisp and smooth, with a slight rib; not frequently used. Tulle: Netting made of silk, nylon, or rayon; used primarily for skirts and veils (think ballerina tutus). Velvet: A soft, thick fabric with a felted face and plain underside.

FROCKS

NOT ROCKS RULE THE DAY!

Whether you have that all-important rock on your wedding finger or not, us girls can’t help but sit up and take notice of the latest bridal trends and so, without further ado here are the top trends of the season!

Short & Sweet Like music to the fashion maverick’s ears, if you are the kind of bride prepared to shun that traditional meringue and aim for something different, then the mini lengths are perfect for you and your wedding. An overwhelming amount of designers showed daring mini dresses this season, securing the sexy style as a sure trend. Some showed frocks with hemlines modestly hovering above the knee, while other more risqué styles moved even further up the thigh.

1.

2.

3.

4.

1. The Daring Mini From Marchesa:

3. The Best Of Both Worlds From Reem Acra:

This look is definitely a dress for bombshell brides; eye-wateringly short and seriously glamorous, wall flowers need not apply. If you have the pins to pull it off, we love the strapless, itsy bitsy design with gorgeous voluminous layers.

We think this is the perfect dress for those who can’t decide whether to do long or short, because it does both! With the sassy mini length at the front and long train of tulle at the back, it offers you the appeal of going short while still protecting your modesty from behind. It is a real show-off frock that has oodles of wow factor.

2. The Classic With A Twist From Amsale: We could see Holly Golightly getting hitched in this frock. Short but sweet and simple but different, it is a mini with class. The elegant high neck and fitted bodice coupled with the classic shift shape and cute bow detail make it classic enough, but still a quirky choice. We would style it up with simple vintage accessories to maximise its retro appeal.

4. The Column With Curves From Oscar De La Renta: This slinky mermaid-shape dress has so much more to offer than a sexy figurehugging fit. With its gathered ruched side detail and stiff curvy folds at the shoulder and hips, it makes a quiet statement, but definitely offers an individual look for those seeking something different for their big day.

Fairytale Tulle

If you have ever dreamed of that princess wedding with the fullon tutu dress, then you are in luck this season, as the designers have been in full princess mode, designing wedding dresses in layer upon layer of enveloping tulle. A huge trend this season, generous wisps of the ‘light as a feather’ fabric adorned dresses in almost every collection. From puffy, cloud-like styles, to classic princess designs and lightweight dresses that seemed to simply float down the catwalk, transparent acres of tulle were everywhere we looked.

1. The Tulle Fantasy From Monique Lhuillier: A frothy, rosette covered princess-length dress with a long, cascading train, this look embodies romance and femininity. Fit for a princess, if you are looking for gasps of delight, this is your dress.

2. The Figure-hugging Version From Kenneth Pool:

dramatic fashion to layers of spiky tulle. Almost flamenco-like in design, this spunky style screams that tulle can be sexy and not just soft.

Tulle doesn’t have to be all wispy and light and this dress shows the tougher side of the fabric, all thanks to a body hugging strapless 2011 is certainly set to be a year of Ooh La La in bridal fashion, and there is certainly a style, cut or bodice that snakes down to the mid-thigh before fanning out in a fabric to suit us all.

A RING WITH A TWIST

in mind, while others search for an authentic vintage ring with that unusual, retro look. Antique engagement rings also feature older designs with unique stones. Retro styles often feature coloured diamonds or other gems such as aquamarines, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. Many of these rings use intricate filigrees and delicate accent stones along the bands.

For many couples unusual engagement rings symbolise not only their relationship, but their individuality as well. A unique ring can capture the personality of the bride-to-be as well as the couple, and is all the more significant because of its charm.

Bezel/Semi Bezel Setting Bezel settings hold stones in place by using a metal ring instead of prongs. The metal ring completely encircles the stone and embeds it into the setting. A bezel set engagement ring is perfect for the woman who leads an active lifestyle or never removes her ring. Without the sharp corners of prongs, the chances are less that the setting will catch on something. In this way, the stone is more secure and the ring less likely to be damaged.

Retro Stones

Semi Bezel

The retro style of the 1920s through the 1950s is popular among many women today. Some simply want their rings designed with the past

Pave Setting Pave setting engagement rings feature diamonds or other stones encrusted into the band, making the entire ring appear to be made from precious stones. These exquisite settings can be quite expensive, however, and to avoid a higher price couples can consider using semi-precious stones to pave the ring.

Channel Setting A channel setting is a ring style where the stones are set into the band itself, usually in a continuous line. These settings are very popular for anniversary bands and men’s wedding bands, but would make a unique choice for an engagement ring as well. While many engagement rings include accent stones in a channel setting, a ring that uses solely this type of recessed setting would be quite unusual.

Birthstones

Channel

A rising trend for unusual engagement rings is to use the birthstones of the bride and groom when designing the ring. There may be a central diamond flanked by the gemstones, or the stones themselves can be a focal point in the ring’s design. This not only creates a unique ring, but also imbues it with personal significance to the couple.

Coloured Diamonds

If a diamond is your choice but you want something a bit unusual, think about coloured diamonds. Coloured diamonds open up a whole world of choices. You can choose from pinks, reds, yellows, greens, and blues. Another choice for a coloured diamond is to actually choose one of a lower grade, which would then have a yellow or brownish tint. Colour is one of the factors affecting a stone’s price, and if you prefer a coloured stone that qualifies as lower grade, you can create an unusual engagement ring at a significant discount. Remember it’s your choice!

ROYAL TREATMENT Samantha Parry tells us about her fairytale wedding day to footballer Paul Parry that was fit for a princess…

perfect. My tiara was also from Allison Jayne and my veil belonged to my sister, Jody, who married nine months before so it doubled up as my 'something borrowed'! I was lucky enough to have my daughter Megan as my flower girl. She wore a little dress with pink rose petals to match the bridesmaids, and looked like a little princess with her flower headband and fairy wand. My sisters Jody and Emma were my bridesmaids and my closest friend Sarah was my maid of honour - and they all looked beautiful in their bright pink John Lesley dresses. Paul had two ushers - RJ and James, and his best man was his friend from school, John. They all wore outfits from Dyfed Menswear that Paul chose. I had my hair done by a hairdresser friend called Annie, who did a fantastic job. I wanted a style that was sophisticated but sexy, down but slightly off my face - I'm not fussy, honest!

Paul and I met through friends and we hit it off straight away. We'd been together almost five years before we finally tied the knot. The proposal was very romantic. Paul whisked me away on a surprise weekend to London where, on the first night, we stayed in a fabulous hotel and drank champagne. The next day he took me to Harrods and Selfridges where he took me for a gorgeous lunch at Langan's. The restaurant is a special place to us as it was the place we dined on our first time away together. After shopping and eating, we sampled the luxurious health spa at The Grove.

The following day Paul had arranged for me to be utterly pampered with all the spa treatments you could imagine - it was perfect! I've had horses all my life, and I'd always said how I'd love a horse and carriage for my wedding day. After our engagement, Paul told me that he'd booked the most beautiful ivory carriage with two black horses from Ben Ford. He's so thoughtful and romantic! Being a girlie girl, I decided on a pink colour scheme for the day. The flowers, which were from the Village Flower Studio were inkeeping with the colour scheme. Rob and CJ were invaluable on the day and their finishing touches were spot on - the church pews were decorated with pink roses and they even placed small lanterns in the trees! I traveled as far as Manchester to hunt down the perfect dress, but I ended up opting for my first choice! It was a gown by Maggie Sottero from Allison Jayne in Cardiff that weighed over two stones. I'd always dreamt of having a big dress so it was

Our ceremony took place at St Mary's church in Marshfield. This is where I was christened and confirmed as a child so it was really meaningful to get married there too. We had the reception in a marquee in my parents' garden - it was the house that I grew up in so it has many fond memories. My photographer for the day was Mike Dearden of Dearden Studio. We chose Mike as he did a superb job with my sister's wedding photography and he is so professional and easy to work with.

Paul and I both agree that it was a fairytale wedding come true.

That evening, Paul had arranged a private table for us next to the fountains outside, decorated with pink petals and a bottle of pink Champagne. I had no idea that he was intending to propose, but then he walked me to the fountains, got down on one knee and brought out the most stunning engagement ring. The view of the fountains and fields was to die for and made the moment absolutely perfect. To top it off, when we returned to the hotel room, there were rose petals leading the way to the room, and scattered on the bed and in the bath.

We chose our rings from Parkhouse. Paul and I always said we would have matching bands of diamonds - my wedding band had three rows and Paul's had six - and the vicar who married us actually made a joke about them being so bling when he was blessing them!

We gave welshcakes made by my Aunty Helen as favours, and our stunning four-tier wedding cake which was a mixture of sponge and chocolate cake with roses draped down the one side. The Classic Soul Dogs provided the entertainment for the evening and kept everyone dancing all night. We had our first dance to Bryan Adams' 'Everything I Do' - it was such a special moment and it brought tears to my eyes. Paul and I both agree that it was a fairytale wedding come true. The only thing that didn't go to plan was our attempt to set off lanterns at the end of the night. Some went off and some came flying straight back down and landed on the guests, including my brother-in-law, who burnt his face! We spent the wedding night at The Celtic Manor. I was about to order a taxi until my parents surprised me by hiring us a vintage Bentley to drive us there! That night it took about two hours to undo the corset I was wearing, which frustrated Paul! A word of advice to future brides: always get somebody to undo the corset before you leave with your husband! Paul booked the honeymoon and kept it a secret so it was a total surprise. We flew first class to Barbados for a week then spent three days in New York at the Plaza Hotel where they filmed Home Alone 2. We had such an amazing time, and drank lots of champagne and cocktails so it was time to detox when we got home!

RECIPE FOR ROMANCE Former chef to the stars and TV cookery extraordinaire, Angela Gray, is an expert at creating recipes to suit all occasions. Having cooked for the likes of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and presented such shows as 'Hot Stuff' for BBC Wales, Angela has built up a wealth of culinary knowledge and all things tasty. Angela, who will be demonstrating at this year's Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival, says: "When you think of romance, you think of restaurants and meals for two, but there's no reason why you can't recreate this romantic atmosphere at home. "There are so many recipes that would be perfect for couple's spending a quiet night in; pastas and spicy sauces are great, as well as things you can share. I suggest cooking the meal together which can be a lot of fun and involve a lot of bodily contact-especially in a small kitchen!" To watch Angela in action, catch her at the Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival, where she will be demonstrating quick and easy seasonal dishes at 11:30am on the Saturday at the Sigma 3 demo area in the Cowbridge Town Hall Car Park.

LENS TRENDS The Experts Let Slip The Most Fashionable Photography For 2011... Your wedding album will house the memories of one of the most treasured days of your life, so it’s crucial to get it right. The right pictures can help bring to life the very emotions, atmosphere and thoughts of that special day. Though trends may come and go, the traditional album style has always lingered. According to David Edwards of David Edwards Photography, there has been an increasing demand image courtesy of Jake Morley Photography for the traditional look. “Although we offer contemporary albums, we’ve seen a significant shift back to a traditional style of wedding album”. Another important element to consider is the style of photography. The once popular heavily styled and processed photography is beginning to give way to a more relaxed look that’s both honest and fun. This helps enrich your wedding album with the true emotion and narrative of your unique day. Jake Morley of Jake Morley Photography insists that there has been an increased interest in this relaxed, natural style of photography: “A lot of people are opting for laid back shots that steer away from forced poses. This lends an editorial feel to the photos, that, with the addition of wild flowers and natural settings adds an enchanting, vintage edge to wedding photos.” The digital revolution is also an important factor to consider when it comes to your wedding snaps. John and Gail of Photo Evolution point out that this movement is constantly pushing and blurring the boundaries of visual media: “The latest cameras are able to capture both video and stills. The most important change for us has probably been the ability of cameras to work in extremely low light without resorting to using flashguns. Being able to photograph in dimly lit churches and venues in an unobtrusive way is invaluable to our style of photography.” These elements, when mixed with your unique style for the big day are sure to guarantee you a wedding album that you, your friends and your family can cherish and enjoy forever.
