Several members of Classical Brit Award winning choir Only Men Aloud have established a new music festival to promote young artists and give them a platform alongside some of the biggest names in the musical world, raising considerable amounts of money for charity. David Mahoney, Artistic Director of the festival, has led a team of volunteers from Britain’s favourite choir and other members of the Cardiff musical community to establish the Cardiff Music Festival, which promises to be one of the most exciting events in Cardiff’s music calendar. The Cardiff Music Festival is a not for proﬁt organisation, committed to achieving three fundamental objectives: to bring musical excellence and performances of the highest quality to Wales’ capital city; to promote young artists and composers at the beginning of their careers; and to raise money for charitable causes through musical performance. This year, the festival is honoured to be supporting the Noah’s Ark Appeal, The Elizabeth Evans Trust and Amser Justin Time. The festival also aims to bring music to new audiences, making classical music and musical theatre accessible to those who may not have been exposed to it before. The festival also sees the launch of the Young Welsh Artists Recital Series, which this year promotes Steffan Morris (former Texaco Young Musician of Wales winner), Anne Denholm (BBC Young Musician Finalist), Steffan Jones and two young composers whose works will be premiered at the festival. There will also be a series of singing workshops and informal performances at the Wales Millennium Centre.

A SHOWCASE OF MUSICAL EXCELLENCE IN WALES’ CAPITAL CITY

The 2011 festival will be opened by its resident ensemble the Cardiff Sinfonietta, joined by the critically acclaimed young pianist Sophie Cashell (BBC ‘Classical Star’ winner). The musical theatre evening brings some show business to proceedings with an all-star line up including Katy Treharne (currently starring in Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End), Jessica Robinson (star of BBC’s ‘Over the Rainbow’) and members of Only Men Aloud. We then welcome the Manchester Chamber Orchestra to the festival, with a concert of string music, before a spectacular Opera Gala brings the festival to a stunning conclusion with performers including Dennis O’Neill, Wynne Evans, Gwawr Edwards and Mark Evans, hosted by Only Men Aloud musical director Tim Rhys-Evans. The inaugural 2011 Cardiff Music Festival will see the involvement of over 100 performers, the majority of whom are young musicians hoping to build a career in the music industry. This is a unique opportunity for an emerging generation of Welsh performers, supported by the enormous generosity of the South Wales community.

The exquisite El Puerto restaurant is located on the lower floor of the Custom House building. RHYDIAN ROCKS Rhydian Roberts is having a very busy time at the moment. The platinum blond baritone from Sennybridge is starring in the touring version of ‘We Will Rock You’ he plays evil police chief Khashoggi, the follically ﬂamboyant villain whose hairdo is much like the singer’s own.

Added to thie is recording a new TV series Rhydian Roberts Presents. Joining him will be a star line-up of guests along with a showcase of exciting up and coming Welsh talent. Over a period of eight weeks, Rhydian will perform a number of his old favourites but also introduce us to his latest repertoire from his new album. The new light entertainment series will be staged on a bespoke ‘Vegas-like’ set where Rhydian and his guests will provide us with a star-studded evening of performance. He is also set to take over the role of Teen Angel in the touring version of Grease. Revisit We will Rock You and release his new album Waves on the 1st August. With all he has to do, I was delighted that he was able to take time out and chat with me.

Ed: “You new album is quite a departure from your previous work is this why you signed with a new record label, and walked away from Simon and Syco?” Rhydian: “I think I served my time with him and it just felt like the right thing to do. We talked, he saw my point of view and we’re still in touch today. Ed: So what made you choose Conehead Records? Rhydian: Because they’re lovely, enthusiastic people who are behind me and my new album 100 per cent.” Ed: “How would you describe the new album?” Rhydian: “ I would say it’s very much New Wave. I was listening to an old cassette tape of my brother’s, with bands like Blancmange, and White & Torch. When I heard it, I got really excited and thought, I could put my stamp on that.” This is a man whose rich baritone sound actually made me cry when I heard his version of ‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story, and I do mean that in a good way.

‘Waves’ is a bold and conﬁdent album made by a performer at the top of his game. With massive success already achieved, Rhydian has chosen to take control and unleash his creativity in a genre of music that to use an X Factor phrase ‘is out of his comfort zone’. However with Rhydian’s hardworking ethic, level headedness and undoubted singing talent. I have know doubt that whatever he chooses to do he will make it a success.

THE STRANGE WORLD OF GURNEY SLADE (Network)

Network DVD, erstwhile distributors of rare and classic British TV shows have done themselves proud with the August release of the all but forgotten The Strange World of Gurney Slade starring the late great Anthony Newley as the eponymous anti-hero of the title. Way ahead of its time in theme and content this fascinating 1960 six episode comedy series is far different from anything else of the era and will fascinate those who take the trouble to share Gurney’s surrealistic journey of self discovery in a London that is barely recognisable to us nowadays. Newley, whose personality and looks much resemble Robbie Williams, is an engaging presence on screen and those who get into the style of this unusual show will be much rewarded as Gurney interacts with talking animals, inanimate objects and the varied individuals he meets along the way. I would go so far as to say that this series is to UK comedy what “The Prisoner” is to drama and it is little wonder that audiences of the day were confused and bewildered by the short lived series. This begs to be rediscovered and thanks to Network it has been.

A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA (Eureka!)

Those who believe that pirate adventures begin and end with Captain Jack Sparrow would be well advised to dip their toes into the Caribbean waters of A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA, the 1965 screen adaptation of the famous 1929 adventure novel by Richard Hughes whose Welsh literal connections link him with no less than Dylan Thomas. The movie stars Anthony Quinn and James Coburn as 1870’s pirates who accidentally capture some British children on their ship after a raid and ﬁnd themselves locked in a thrilling adventure steeped in superstition and the power of childhood perception. What looks at an early stage to be a tale of light-hearted adventure quite literally sails into darker waters as it progresses and this movie directed by Alexander Mackendrick is as good an adaptation of a classic novel as one could wish for. If you take your laptop on holiday from July 25th (the release date) then you could do a lot worse than take this DVD with you as it will entertain all members of the family although there are scenes that might be disturbing for the very young and impressionable.

TALES OUT OF SCHOOL... FOUR FILMS BY DAVID LELAND (Network)

Memories of life in Thatcher’s Britain are vividly brought to life in this set of 4 ITV dramas from the 80’s by acclaimed writer David Leland., the most famous of which is the startling MADE IN BRITAIN starring Tim Roth as hate-filled teenage skinhead Trevor who simply cannot or will not adapt to what passes for a normal life in any way and pays a harsh penalty as a result. Once seen, never forgotten this is as hard-hitting today as it was nearly 30 years ago and I find it to be essential viewing. The other 3 dramas in this set are BIRTH OF A NATION , FLYING INTO THE WIND and R.H.I.N.O. all of which deal with the problems faced by parents,teachers and children alike in a vastly changing and evolving educational and social landscape that reverberates to this very day. Some of the content in these films is harrowing to say the least but is never done sensationally or for effect. The 18 certificate applied to this Network release is for good reason and is recommended to all who want to discover how society in some quarters has reached the point it is at today. Not for those who enjoy fluffy material this is challenging stuff indeed.
