Several members of Classical Brit Award winning choir Only Men Aloud have established a new music festival to promote young artists and give them a platform alongside some of the biggest names in the musical world, raising considerable amounts of money for charity. David Mahoney, Artistic Director of the festival, has led a team of volunteers from Britain’s favourite choir and other members of the Cardiff musical community to establish the Cardiff Music Festival, which promises to be one of the most exciting events in Cardiff’s music calendar. The Cardiff Music Festival is a not for profit organisation, committed to achieving three fundamental objectives: to bring musical excellence and performances of the highest quality to Wales’ capital city; to promote young artists and composers at the beginning of their careers; and to raise money for charitable causes through musical performance. This year, the festival is honoured to be supporting the Noah’s Ark Appeal, The Elizabeth Evans Trust and Amser Justin Time. The festival also aims to bring music to new audiences, making classical music and musical theatre accessible to those who may not have been exposed to it before. The festival also sees the launch of the Young Welsh Artists Recital Series, which this year promotes Steffan Morris (former Texaco Young Musician of Wales winner), Anne Denholm (BBC Young Musician Finalist), Steffan Jones and two young composers whose works will be premiered at the festival. There will also be a series of singing workshops and informal performances at the Wales Millennium Centre.

A SHOWCASE OF MUSICAL EXCELLENCE IN WALES’ CAPITAL CITY

The 2011 festival will be opened by its resident ensemble the Cardiff Sinfonietta, joined by the critically acclaimed young pianist Sophie Cashell (BBC ‘Classical Star’ winner). The musical theatre evening brings some show business to proceedings with an all-star line up including Katy Treharne (currently starring in Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End), Jessica Robinson (star of BBC’s ‘Over the Rainbow’) and members of Only Men Aloud. We then welcome the Manchester Chamber Orchestra to the festival, with a concert of string music, before a spectacular Opera Gala brings the festival to a stunning conclusion with performers including Dennis O’Neill, Wynne Evans, Gwawr Edwards and Mark Evans, hosted by Only Men Aloud musical director Tim Rhys-Evans. The inaugural 2011 Cardiff Music Festival will see the involvement of over 100 performers, the majority of whom are young musicians hoping to build a career in the music industry. This is a unique opportunity for an emerging generation of Welsh performers, supported by the enormous generosity of the South Wales community.

To buy tickets, visit www.wmc.org.uk or www.thegate.org.uk. www.cardiffmusicfestival.com www.welshlife.biz

Patrons of the festival are the internationally acclaimed opera singers Dennis O’Neill CBE and Rebecca Evans, while support has come from the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Printing Company, Cheeoy Lee and Cardiff Design Company, amongst others.

“ Cardiff was recently voted the sixth most desirable city to visit in the world,by the National Geographic Society ”

Cardiff was recently voted the sixth most desirable city to visit in the world, by the National Geographic Society, and this made us wonder just how much people who live in or around the City really appreciate just what it has to offer. Many of us spend our leisure time taking in tours of world sites and we are more than happy to take a bike ride, long coach trip, or walk miles just to see something that can sometimes be underwhelming. So why not show the same consideration for the City that is right on our doorstep, and explore it in a leisurely and relaxed manner, on a bicycle.

Puccini

EL Puerto & La Marina Restaurants

Table Talk

Puccini in Albany Road Cardiff is a mediterranean tapas bar, pizzeria and lounge, with warm friendly staff and atmosphere. A relaxed calm oasis in the busy area of Roath. With a comfortable seating area with leather sofas scatter cushions and restful decoration ideal for enjoying a delicious coffee. Beautiful dining area reminiscent of Italy with frescos and floral arrangements, a delightful place to enjoy a romantic meal. There is also an outside eating area that will be used for barbecues and grills during the warm weather. An extensive tapas menu with a real assortment of mediterranean dishes, from Spain, Italy and the Middle East.

The Potted Pig

Mint & Mustard

Tucked away under Zizzi’s restaurant in High St Cardiff, The Potted Pig Restaurant now resides in what used to be an old bank vault. The lovingly renovated space has been transformed into a charming restaurant, packed with character and a delicious and original menu to boot. The Potted Pig’s modern British menu offers a little something extra for the more adventurous diner. From the bone marrow and duck heart starter, to the beautiful rabbit main course and whole suckling pig (available for groups of eight), the menu is seasonal, unpretentious in its approach, and singularly unique in its offering of quality but reasonably priced British-inspired food in Cardiff.

The exquisite El Puerto restaurant is located on the lower floor of the Custom House building. Its lively atmosphere coupled with the brasseries 45ft long bar makes it a superb venue for a lunch or evening meal. Overlooking Cardiff bay, the solid wood floors, scattering of sawdust and warm hues and tones give the thought you could be somewhere in Spain. The hive of El Puerto is the kitchen which is set as part of the open display. The counter is always brimming with prime cuts of meat, game and the freshest of fish. El Puerto also offers a fantastic choice for Sunday lunch varying from traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings to something a bit more adventurous. Children are welcome throughout the week in El Puerto but please be aware we do not have high chair facilities. El Puerto offers a full ‘a la carte’ menu but also daily specials both at lunch and dinner times. All menus can be viewed in the restaurant and sample menus are available on request. Please be aware that due to the atypical nature of our menu and dependency on fresh produce, we do not have a fixed menu throughout the year. La Marina restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of the beautiful Custom House, Penarth. It benefits from a breathtaking view overlooking Cardiff bay that is most stunning when lit up at night. La Marina is a popular choice for lunch time and evening diners alike, wishing to seek a quiet refuge away from their busy working lives. The lighter tones and suggestion of space give for a more relaxed environment - ideal for a polite meal away from the capital city. In addition to the fantastic views La Marina also incorporates a large fish counter, displaying various specialities including sea bass in rock salt or something that little more special such as Brill of lobster. La Marina’s fish are caught fresh and hand picked so that only those of highest quality are used. Types on offer will vary from day to day and week to week. La Marina also offers fresh meat and game for those who may not so keen on fresh fish dishes. La Marina also offers a traditional Sunday lunch menu as well as its full a la carte option.

The award-winning Mint & Mustard in Whitchurch Road Cardiff has re-defined the Indian dining experience, mixing contemporary cuisine with impeccable service to create one of South Wales’ most highly regarded restaurants. Growing in fame and renown across the Capital and beyond, we were the first Indian restaurant to take the top award of ‘Best Restaurant in South Wales’, as well as ‘Best Indian Restaurant’ at the 2008 South Wales Echo Food & Drink Awards – proving its popularity with residents and food critics alike. Our contemporary classic Indian dishes have also seen us win the prestigious House of Commons Tiffin Cup and the South Asian Chef Competition. Constantly pioneering inventive ways to bring Southern Indian cuisine to the UK, Mint & Mustard endeavours to bring the unique cuisine of Kerala to the Capital.

RHYDIAN ROCKS Rhydian Roberts is having a very busy time at the moment. The platinum blond baritone from Sennybridge is starring in the touring version of ‘We Will Rock You’ he plays evil police chief Khashoggi, the follically flamboyant villain whose hairdo is much like the singer’s own.

Added to thie is recording a new TV series Rhydian Roberts Presents. Joining him will be a star line-up of guests along with a showcase of exciting up and coming Welsh talent. Over a period of eight weeks, Rhydian will perform a number of his old favourites but also introduce us to his latest repertoire from his new album. The new light entertainment series will be staged on a bespoke ‘Vegas-like’ set where Rhydian and his guests will provide us with a star-studded evening of performance. He is also set to take over the role of Teen Angel in the touring version of Grease. Revisit We will Rock You and release his new album Waves on the 1st August. With all he has to do, I was delighted that he was able to take time out and chat with me.

Ed: “You new album is quite a departure from your previous work is this why you signed with a new record label, and walked away from Simon and Syco?” Rhydian: “I think I served my time with him and it just felt like the right thing to do. We talked, he saw my point of view and we’re still in touch today. Ed: So what made you choose Conehead Records? Rhydian: Because they’re lovely, enthusiastic people who are behind me and my new album 100 per cent.” Ed: “How would you describe the new album?” Rhydian: “ I would say it’s very much New Wave. I was listening to an old cassette tape of my brother’s, with bands like Blancmange, and White & Torch. When I heard it, I got really excited and thought, I could put my stamp on that.” This is a man whose rich baritone sound actually made me cry when I heard his version of ‘Somewhere’ from West Side Story, and I do mean that in a good way.

‘Waves’ is a bold and confident album made by a performer at the top of his game. With massive success already achieved, Rhydian has chosen to take control and unleash his creativity in a genre of music that to use an X Factor phrase ‘is out of his comfort zone’. However with Rhydian’s hardworking ethic, level headedness and undoubted singing talent. I have know doubt that whatever he chooses to do he will make it a success.

CYMRAEG EICH DEWIS CHI WELSH IT’S YOUR CHOICE Welsh Incident by Gareth Glyn Jonathan Pryce heads a stellar list of performers on a double album of orchestral music by the celebrated Anglesey composer Gareth Glyn. Released to celebrate Gareth’s 60th Birthday, Welsh Incident – is a double album packed with famous names. Jonathan Pryce narrates the title track, the world-première recording of a setting of Robert Graves’s iconic (and hilarious) poem

about aliens on a North Wales beach. He’s joined by a virtuoso double bass soloist – dubbed the “Simon Cowell of classical music” after his appearances on the BBC-2 hit Maestro – Dominic Seldis, who also performs the brilliant Microncerto on the album The music – all composed in Gareth Glyn’s delightfully approachable style – is nothing if not international, with pieces inspired by his native Wales (organist Jane Watts pulls out all the stops in Gwylmabsant) as well as the grandeur of North Carolina.

The songs vary from the classical and religious to folk and traditional. The choir now has 38 members, of which several have been with the choir since the beginning. attract new members regularly who enjoy the fun and friendship of being part of Côr Eifionydd. Why has Côr Eifionydd been so successful over the last 25 years? One major reason is that the members enjoy the challenge of learning new songs to compete and to perform in concerts. But the main reason without a doubt is the invaluable contribution of Pat Jones, the musical director.

Over 60% of the world live their lives bilingually. There are 6,912 languages spoken in the world today. A greeting in Welsh was included in the 55 languages on the Voyager spacecraft and has just left the Solar system to travel the stars. Being bilingual makes it easier to learn other languages.

But we don’t speak Welsh

Neither do the parents of most of the children in the majority of bilingual schools in Wales, and you’ll find that most of the children come from English-speaking homes - and they’re doing just fine. Even if you don’t speak Welsh, your attitude towards the language can make a world of difference. You can still encourage and praise your child’s Welsh - ask her to sing the new song she learned today; watch his favourite children’s programme on S4C with him - and ask them to tell you something about them. You may just pick up some Welsh yourself!

things like “mine’s the beic melyn”, and “daddy’s reado’r newspaper”. It’s a normal stage of bilingual development and will pass - it doesn’t mean that they can’t speak either language properly. Like any other aspect of learning a language, children very quickly categorise words and meanings in the right place. The words may be mixed up, but your child certainly isn’t!

…what about her homework?

You can help your child with her homework by making sure that she’s given the time and a place to do it by herself. She’ll be able to tell you about her work in English, and then do it in Welsh. That’s not a problem - it could well make it easier for her to understand the subject.

Robot Factory

…what about her English

A disc full of mathematical activities set in a robot factory. As the children complete activities they are given robot pieces to build their own robot. The activities have been developed to address the needs of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage guidelines. An easy-to-use resource which introduces a range of mathematical vocabulary and concepts to children in KS1. Primary Level

There’s no need to worry. If you look at exam results in Wales - even for English language and literature those in bilingual schools are consistently better than the national average. It’s been shown that children in bilingual schools develop their writing skills more effectively than children in English medium schools. By the time your child leaves school, she’ll be fully bilingual and be able to follow college or university courses in either or both languages.

Survival! Game for Life

…won’t he be confused

Survival! is a game to create a personal and social awareness of sustainability and global environmental issues, of how they affect the Earth and of how we can conserve our fragile environment in a local, national and global context. The game also aims to create an awareness of the responsibility of each individual in sustainability and environmental issues and create an awareness of wider global issues that impact our lives.

Learning languages - even one language - can be a confusing business for children. It’s quite normal to hear small children say funny things like “mouses”, “hims car”, and “I goed”. By trying out words, children work out the rules and find out about how languages work. The same sort of thing happens with two languages. Sometimes small children will use the two languages in the same sentence, and say

HOT Summer

READS FOR THE YOUNGSTERS

The Hunger Games

by Suzanne Collins

Katniss Everdeen is a survivor. She has to be; she’s representing her District, number 12, in the 74th Hunger Games in the Capitol, the heart of Panem, a new land that rose from the ruins of a post-apocalyptic North America. To punish citizens for an early rebellion, the rulers require each district to provide one girl and one boy, 24 in all, to fight like gladiators in a futuristic arena. The event is broadcast like reality TV, and the winner returns with wealth for his or her district. With clear inspiration from Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and the Greek tale of Theseus, Collins has created a brilliantly imagined dystopia, where the Capitol is rich and the rest of the country is kept in abject poverty, where the poor battle to the death for the amusement of the rich. Impressive world-building, breathtaking action and clear philosophical concerns make this volume, the beginning of a planned trilogy, as good as The Giver and more exciting. However, poor copyediting in the first printing will distract careful readers - a crying shame. (Science fiction. 11 & up) (Kirkus Reviews) -- New Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. But Katniss has been close to death before - and survival, for her, is second nature. The Hunger Games is a searing novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present. Welcome to the deadliest reality TV show ever...

Warhorse

by Michael Morpurgo

From master storyteller, Michael Morpurgo comes an incredibly moving story about one horse’s experience in the deadly chaos of the First World War. In 1914, Joey, a young farm horse, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges towards the enemy, witnessing the horror of the frontline. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey’s courage touches the soldiers around him. I would read this book soon as the film comes out later in the year and it would be great to compare the written word with the movie. Former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo is one of the most successful children’s authors in the country, loved by children, teachers and parents alike.

Holes

by Louis Sachar If you are looking for a truly remarkable novel, something to get your teeth into, something to make you think, and something to make you feel that you have just touched real class, then look no further than Louis Sachar’s extraordinary, award-winning novel Holes.Camp Greenlake is a place for bad boys, where the belief is: “if you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy.” When Stanley Yelnats, accused and found guilty of a crime he did not commit, is sent to Camp Greenlake he really doesn’t think it can be so bad. Stanley and his family try to pretend that he is just going away to camp like the rich kids do, and he promises to write to them every day. But the harsh realities of the camp, and the evil Warden with her lizard - venom impregnated fingernails with her own reasons for making the boys in her charge dig so many holes, sometimes make dying seem like a great idea. When Stanley leaves the camp to go in search of his friend Zero, their journey towards freedom becomes a battle with hunger, thirst and heat in the shadow of Big Thumb -- a mountain so entwined in Stanley’s own family history that he knows if they can reach it they will somehow find salvation. A complex story, riddled with the harsh imagery and barren despair, Holes is a perceptive and intricate homage to family and friendship which never shies away from the harshest of realities yet injects the story of a seemingly hopeless boy with a sly, sideways humour that crackles against the backdrop of the arid wastelands of the desert. A must for anyone, young or old, who relishes an intelligent, courageous and dynamic read.

THE STRANGE WORLD OF GURNEY SLADE (Network)

Network DVD, erstwhile distributors of rare and classic British TV shows have done themselves proud with the August release of the all but forgotten The Strange World of Gurney Slade starring the late great Anthony Newley as the eponymous anti-hero of the title. Way ahead of its time in theme and content this fascinating 1960 six episode comedy series is far different from anything else of the era and will fascinate those who take the trouble to share Gurney’s surrealistic journey of self discovery in a London that is barely recognisable to us nowadays. Newley, whose personality and looks much resemble Robbie Williams, is an engaging presence on screen and those who get into the style of this unusual show will be much rewarded as Gurney interacts with talking animals, inanimate objects and the varied individuals he meets along the way. I would go so far as to say that this series is to UK comedy what “The Prisoner” is to drama and it is little wonder that audiences of the day were confused and bewildered by the short lived series. This begs to be rediscovered and thanks to Network it has been.

A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA (Eureka!)

Those who believe that pirate adventures begin and end with Captain Jack Sparrow would be well advised to dip their toes into the Caribbean waters of A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA, the 1965 screen adaptation of the famous 1929 adventure novel by Richard Hughes whose Welsh literal connections link him with no less than Dylan Thomas. The movie stars Anthony Quinn and James Coburn as 1870’s pirates who accidentally capture some British children on their ship after a raid and find themselves locked in a thrilling adventure steeped in superstition and the power of childhood perception. What looks at an early stage to be a tale of light-hearted adventure quite literally sails into darker waters as it progresses and this movie directed by Alexander Mackendrick is as good an adaptation of a classic novel as one could wish for. If you take your laptop on holiday from July 25th (the release date) then you could do a lot worse than take this DVD with you as it will entertain all members of the family although there are scenes that might be disturbing for the very young and impressionable.

TALES OUT OF SCHOOL... FOUR FILMS BY DAVID LELAND (Network)

Memories of life in Thatcher’s Britain are vividly brought to life in this set of 4 ITV dramas from the 80’s by acclaimed writer David Leland., the most famous of which is the startling MADE IN BRITAIN starring Tim Roth as hate-filled teenage skinhead Trevor who simply cannot or will not adapt to what passes for a normal life in any way and pays a harsh penalty as a result. Once seen, never forgotten this is as hard-hitting today as it was nearly 30 years ago and I find it to be essential viewing. The other 3 dramas in this set are BIRTH OF A NATION , FLYING INTO THE WIND and R.H.I.N.O. all of which deal with the problems faced by parents, teachers and children alike in a vastly changing and evolving educational and social landscape that reverberates to this very day. Some of the content in these films is harrowing to say the least but is never done sensationally or for effect. The 18 certificate applied to this Network release is for good reason and is recommended to all who want to discover how society in some quarters has reached the point it is at today. Not for those who enjoy fluffy material this is challenging stuff indeed.
