ROYAL FAIRYTALES

To celebrate the Royal Wedding we take a trip down memory lane and look at Royal Weddings from the past that we will never forget. On November 20th 1947 Princess Elizabeth married the handsome Prince Philip of Greece. It was described by Winston Churchill as a “Bright ray of colour on the hard grey road we have to travel”; the wedding was the first royal celebration following World War II. People were still limited as to what they could buy and eat, yet many would send Elizabeth their clothing coupons so that their Princess could have the most beautiful wedding gown imaginable. There were even gifts of food from abroad, and hundreds of pairs of stockings - a rarity during the war. Norman Hartnell designed the wedding gown (he would also design Elizabeth’s coronation gown a few years later). The wedding dress was a rich ivory colour and made of duchesse satin with white seed pearls, silver thread, sparkling crystals, and transparent appliqué tulle embroidery. Flowing from the bride’s head was a silk tulle veil, and on her feet were ivory duchesse satin high-heeled sandals, trimmed with silver and seed pearl buckles. Elizabeth wore the King George III fringe tiara, which was also used for Princess Anne’s wedding to Captain Mark Phillips. There had been a last-minute panic - as is the case for many brides - when the fringe tiara snapped and had to be quickly repaired. Then, the bouquet went missing and the princess did not have the pearl necklace she wanted to wear. It had been a wedding gift from her parents King George VI and the Queen.

While the ladies went dashing about in search of the bouquet - soon found in a cold cupboard - a quick thinking courtier went running back to the palace where the wedding gifts were laid out on display. He found the pearl necklace and quickly ran back to present the dear jewels to Princess Elizabeth. At last, the princess, with tiara, necklace, and bouquet in hand, got into the state coach and headed to Westminster Abbey to unite with her betrothed. The next Royal wedding featured may not be one of our own, but Grace Kelly was a beautiful Hollywood star who captured the heart of Prince Rainier of Monaco and in 1956 she married at a civil ceremony, followed the next day by an elaborate Catholic Mass in Monaco. Grace Kelly’s wedding dress was designed by Helen Rose, wardrobe designer at MGM. The MGM wardrobe department made the wedding dress as a gift from MGM. The wedding gown was made from antique Valenciennes rose point lace, twenty-five yards of silk taffeta and ninety eight yards of tulle. Her veil was covered with appliquéd lace lovebirds and thousands of seed pearls. The marriage of HRH Princess Margaret to Anthony ArmstrongJones was celebrated May 6th, 1960. Princess Margaret’s engagement ring was a ruby, created in the style of a rose in honour of her middle name. The only other royal to become engaged with a ruby was Sarah Ferguson. The Princess’s wedding dress was designed by Norman Hartnell, the favoured couturier of Margaret’s sister the Queen, it was very different from any dress that had been created before and it was stunning in its simplicity. The gown was made from silk organza, and the skirt of

the gown was comprised of 30 meters of fabric. Crystal embellishments and beading were kept at a minimum in order to better suit Margaret’s petite frame. Hartnell did not want the gown to overwhelm the princess’ classic beauty. The bodice had a V neckline to elongate and the sleeves were also long and slim. Thus making Margaret’s wedding dress one of the all time classics. The Poltimore tiara sat regally upon Margaret’s dark hair. Like many of the tiaras in the Royal Family, it was seen in several alternative forms such as a diamond fringe necklace and as brooches. The wedding of Princess Anne to Captain Mark Phillips in November 1973 was seen by an estimated 500 million viewers. Her blonde hair was swept up and topped with her mother’s fringe tiara. Her dress also designed by Hartnell, was in a medieval, Tudor style, made of white silk, highnecked and pintucked to show off her tiny waist. The main feature of the dress was the huge trumpet sleeves, tucked into the elbow and flared out over fine chiffon. Sleeves were a big feature of the seventies, but comparing this dress to current bridal fashion, these sleeves give the dress a somewhat dated look. The neckline and shoulders were embroidered with pearls, and pearls of silver thread picked out a design of flowers on the long, pure silk gauze train. The wedding that went down in fairytale history was that of Lady Diana Spencer and HRH Prince Charles. Their engagement was announced on February 24th, 1981. Surrounded by the press within the Buckingham Palace gardens, Diana showed off her enormous sapphire engagement ring, surrounded by fourteen smaller diamonds. Just a few months later on July 29th, Lady Diana became HRH The Princess of

Wales at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The famous dress was designed by husband and wife team Elizabeth and David Emanuel. It was a puff ball meringue affair, with huge puffed sleeves and a frilly neckline; it was made of silk taffeta, decorated with lace, hand embroidery, sequins, 10,000 pearls and had a 25-foot train. The pearl and diamond Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, originally made for Queen Mary adorned her famous blonde mane, this tiara has now been offered to Kate Middleton for her big day on April 29th. The wedding was seen by 750 million people worldwide and the dress the most copied. Yet of all in the list it probably the most dated and unsuitable for its wearer. HRH Prince Andrew, younger brother to Prince Charles, announced his engagement to Sarah Ferguson with a Burmese Ruby engagement ring surrounded by small diamonds. They married four months later on July 23rd, 1986 in Westminster Abbey. The Duchess of York’s wedding dress was created to showcase Sarah’s love for her husband. Created by designer Lindka Cierach, the gown was fashioned of ivory duchesse satin with a scooped neck, elaborate embroidery and bugle beads adorning the bodice, padded shoulders accented by bows, and a large bow at the bustle which flowed into a 17-foot-long train emblazoned with an “A” for Andrew, as well as Sarah’s personal coat of arms, which consisted of a bumble bee, an anchor (chosen to represent the groom’s naval career) and a rose. This dress was a triumph and suited Sarah Ferguson’s more curvy figure. The bride’s veil was attached to a perfumed coronet of gardenias- again, expressly chosen to please the groom. The bride’s floral

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT The Royal Wedding has already created a huge buzz, the big question on everyone’s lips. Who is designing the dress? There’s a whole wealth of designers that may be stepping up to design Kate Middleton’s gown for her wedding next year. But who are they? There’s a reckoning that couture veteran Bruce Oldfield could be in the running – with a portfolio of stunning gowns and a whole array of celebrity fans such as Jerry Hall and Princess Diana herself, perhaps our future Princess will decide to stick with traditional Phillipa Lepley British grandeur for her walk down the aisle. Another frontrunner is ace designer Phillipa Lepley as Kate Middleton definitely wants to have her own designer who would give her an exclusive look. Phillipa Lepley is also preferred by many as her clothing line is regarded as simple yet elegant. Her trademark Alice Temperley is more youthful, which corresponds to the taste and style of the younger generations. Her designs are popularly described as ‘very posh English girls’.

Bruce Oldfield

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen has also thrown his hat into the ring, but perhaps the much-loved designer’s bridalwear is a little too “out there” for the occasion. Similarly, it’s no secret that Kate loves Issa and the fashion house’s feminine, draped collections, but is it too informal for the big day? Others perfect for the job include much-loved Jenny Packham, Temperley and Sassi Holford.

3 TOP TRENDS FOR THE NEW SEASON Blooming Lovely This season the designers reinvented the classic notions of romance and modernism with dynamic shapes and luscious fabrics.

Flower Fantasy You might come to the conclusion that every bridal designer suddenly became an expert in botany, because each collection was resplendent in blooms, blossoms and buds. Dresses with skirts engulfed in giant cabbage roses, delicate silk petals that fluttered up and down entire length of gowns, and even dresses that were actually constructed like a giant flower were popping up on the runways. Here are some of the best.

DiamantÉ Bridal Magazine www.diamantebridal.co.uk

15 Supersize It For the first time in many seasons, we witnessed a return to big ball gowns. The news is that they are light and airy and crafted from sheer, delicate fabrics like tulle and, organza. The big skirts are balanced with tiny, form-fitting bodices that highlight the shoulders, the bust and a feminine defined waist.

Mrs. Clean The ‘modern’ dress got a makeover this season. No longer just a clean column with little or no embellishment, the new clean focuses on shape and beautiful quiet textures and refined details. So if over-the-top ball gowns with all the bells and whistles just aren’t your thing, but you still want a little somethingsomething, then this is the season for you.

WHICH ROYAL BRIDE ARE YOU?

By Angela Pitcher Dowdell of Blue Telephone 029 2062 4477 www.BlueBridalwear.co.uk

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a forthcoming wedding is the excitement and speculation about what the bride will wear. For a Royal wedding this excitement is magnified greatly as the media, the fashion industry and the general public all have their own views. Can we even begin to imagine the pressure on the designer who will create the gown for Kate Middleton? Not only will the gown be scrutinised WORLDWIDE, all details must remain absolutely SECRET. (When the Emmanuels made the gown for the then Diana Spencer there were two dresses Hourglass Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret and Sarah Ferguson are all this shape. They have definite bust, waist and hips.

Allure

This is the ultimate female silhouette and fortunately most of us fall into this figure shape so the fashions worn by these brides had the greatest influence simply because they suited more women. In 1990 I worked briefly for another bridal designer before setting up my own company. All the designs I was asked to create at that time were 'Sarah Ferguson' gowns - beaded fitted bodice with a drop waist, puffed sleeves and gathered skirt. But a word of warning - Be very careful with your waist! A great many women have a very neat waist and understandably want to flaunt it. Sometimes making a dress tighter at the waist can actually just make your bust and hips look bigger. Audrey

Athletic Athletic physiques can sometimes look boyish. This is not normally how most brides would want to described on their wedding day! Princess Anne's gown has dainty decoration to add femininity. If your athletic silhouette is looking a bit 'straight up and down' then focus on adding curves or softening the look with pretty detailing.

made, the second to be worn if details of the first were leaked.) At a recent gathering of the most influential designers in our industry speculation was rife as to who had 'received the call'. Can you imagine our delight that the outright favourite (who usually attends) was not there! Undoubtedly the best way to avoid awkward questions! Kate Middleton's gown will influence what happens in bridal fashion in the next few years. I have been looking at previous Royal weddings. I think we can divide the royal brides into 4 figure shapes.

Clothes Horse With good shoulders and a neat bust clothes will always look good on you. Grace Kelly and Diana Spencer fall into this figure shape. Having a clothes horse silhouette is fabulous but it is not without its drawbacks. Over the years I have seen many distressed brides with this figure shape. Every gown they try on looks great and as they try on more and more gowns which look fantastic on them they become more confused and less able to make a decision. Therefore my top tip to these brides is to select carefully what they want to try on and only to try on gowns they feel strongly about.

Starlet

Both available from: Stephanie Allin - www.stephanieallin.net Slender Kate Middleton has a very slender silhouette with very slim hips. Most of us aspire to a more slender shape but it's not without its issues! It is possible to look too skinny! As with the athletic silhouette, sometimes focussing on adding curves (say for the neckline shape or over the bust) can create the illusion of fullness. Another way is to gather or ruch fabric. Undoubtedly Kate Middleton's dress will have an influence on bridal fashion for some years to come. As she is so slender (and as a nation we are not!) I predict that the details and general styling of her dress will be the influence rather than its silhouette.

DARE TO BE BOLD! BEAUTY SPOT

Red Lips are a beauty classic, with stars of stage and screen past and present (think Marilyn Monroe, Alesha Dixon and Scarlett Johansen) all rocking the red hot look. But this season it’s the trend on everyone’s lips.

While many shy away from the colour, blaming skin tones and hair shades, red is all about a state of mind: it stands as a signature of confidence. Fortunately Prestige Cosmetics’ paraben-free Colour Treat Lipstick comes in a dramatic ‘Romantic Red’. The colour incorporates warm pink and orange tones making it suitable for both pale and darker skin. The lipstick cares and treats your lips whilst adding the must have red touch. Complete with a Prestige Lip Boost Complex formula the ‘Romantic Red’ offers a hydrating boost to plump up your pout. It contains a Ceramide/Peptide blend which uses collagen stimulation to both smooth and firm lips - even once the colour is removed. Combined with Hyaloronic Acid, lips retain maximum moisture and added volume. Vitamins A and E help strengthen and protect, and the essential ingredient Castor Seed repairs and hydrates for that added ‘wow’ factor..

THE CROWN JEWELS There is no doubt that as a result of the Royal engagement, there are likely to be many more, as couples become embroiled in the romance of The Royal Wedding.

It seems certain that the stone of choice to adorn the wedding finger of many brides to be, will be the Sapphire, and I have no doubt that just as it did in 1981 when it adorned the elegant digit of Lady Diana Spencer, it will spawn many replicas. Diana’s and now Kate Middleton’s striking oval sapphire is surrounded by fourteen brilliant cut diamonds and set in 18 carat white gold. Symbolizing love and purity, the sapphire is probably the most popular stone chosen by royal brides and this choice is somewhat of a tradition in the family. Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, and Princess Alexandra of Kent who wears an oval star sapphire ring inherited from her mother. Princess Anne, the present Duchess of Kent and Princess Michael of Kent, also had sapphire rings for their engagements. When the Queen Mother became engaged in 1923, she was originally given a sapphire ring, but in the 1950’s she switched to a large pearl ring surrounded by diamonds, similar to a ring worn by Queen Mary until her death. Some Royals have broken with tradition, however, Princess Margaret and Sarah Ferguson both opted for the Ruby. Margaret’s ruby was cut into a Rose to honour her middle name and Sarah’s oval Burmese ruby surrounded by a cluster of 10 drop diamonds was chosen to compliment her red hair. Prince Andrew had originally wanted an emerald ring, but Sarah didn’t, so the couple chose a ruby instead. Prince Andrew helped to design it. It is set in eighteen carat yellow and has a white gold band.

For many brides, the diamond is still the favourite stone of choice and for the Queen her favourite item of jewellery is her diamond engagement ring. The diamonds on her ring came from a tiara that had belonged to Prince Philip’s mother. Prince Philip was involved in the design and the platinum ring was set with eleven diamonds, a 3 carat solitaire and five smaller stones. When the engagement was announced, the ring was too big and had to be resized 2 days before the official photocall. It is said that if the Queen is annoyed about anything she will start to twist the ring round and round. When it comes to the provenance of diamonds, Camilla’s ring probably has the most history and sentimental value. The ring is considered to be a family heirloom, and in my opinion the most beautiful. It is in an art deco style, set in platinum, and composed of an emerald cut central diamond flanked by three diamond baguettes on either side. It originally belonged to the Queen Mother, who was given the ring in 1926 upon the birth of the present Queen.

PUSHING THE CREATIVE BOUNDARIES! Michael Dearden of Dearden Studio has scooped the top prize, being named the UK Master Photographer of the Year 2010. Michael’s controversial winning image caught the eye of the judges for its unusual concept and faultless technique. Michael is no stranger to major awards having recently won Welsh Master Photographer of the Year for a staggering seventh time. It was a great night for Michael - he was also awarded a first in the Contemporary Wedding category. MPA Chief executive, Colin Buck made this comment: “Michael’s winning image is about as far from a conventional wedding photograph as you could wish for. It’s the perfect example of how today’s professional photographers push the creative boundaries and shows we should always expect the unexpected from our top photographers.” MPA members from around the world submitted images for the annual competition. Chairman of the judging panel, Henk van Kooten FMPA, paid tribute to the standard of entries: “The judges look for true photographic craftsmanship. A beautifully lit image on its own may not be enough to win, we require a great concept and for this to be coupled with a full range of different skills including direction, design and printing. This year gave us some fantastic images and some great surprises - the winner included!”

THE MANE MAN

In recent years men have become more fashion conscious and style statements are no longer a women’s domain. Modern men are extremely aware of their looks and hairstyles form an integral part of their dressing. In the past many men carried the same look throughout their life and some still prefer to do so. However, there is a growing clan that keeps experimenting with their strands to give a completely different look and feel each new season...

Although there are many options there are 4 main points that should always be considered: 1) What face shape do you have? Round, Square, Apple, Heart, Oval 2) What type of hair do you have? Straight, curly, thick, fine 3) What style is your wedding? Modern, traditional, themed. 4) Most crucial, do not pick a style that will look dated in years to come. How many wedding photos have you seen with Mullets, or curly perms?

The Buzz cut is one of the favourites amongst men. This “wash and go” style of haircut. is perfect if you have a flat skull, and want minimum maintenance.

Spikes are for trendy and make you look younger. The spiky haircut can be worn easily with casual wear as well as formal wear. A wet look can be set for the formal occasion while funky looking sun-dried spikes definitely look good on the honeymoon as well.

Men’s long hairstyles have a lot of scope to experiment with. However, you need to be a little wary with your long hair, all too often men are not able to carry the long hair look as they lack shape and definition.

Another strong style is the striking military haircut. You can either opt for high and tight where most of the hairs are on the top and the sides are clipped neatly shaved.

You can also combine a layered haircut with the spiky look. Straight hairs with rugged texture tend to stand on their own if they are left to grow about an inch or half. They give a nice spiky look while the rest of the hairs are done in layered haircut. You can always use gel or wax if you want them to stand rigidly straight.
