With the exception of those horrific cinnamon brooms, I love everything about fall and the holidays that are upon us. They certainly make me stop and realize all that I have to be thankful for, which is so much more than I could ever deserve. These days, especially, I appreciate more and more my family, friends and surrounding myself with all things good, positive and those that simply bring me joy.
I love the home featured this month and more importantly how the owners describe it as “having good energy.” The house simply brings them joy, and after reading the article and browsing the beautiful photos, I am sure you will see why. I truly believe that our home and surrounding community can alter our attitude and outlook.
I am excited to share with you one of our Mid South towns and communities that bursts with positive and wholesome vibes—the city of Lakeland, TN. I have really enjoyed getting to know the area and the residents better. Much like the home in this issue, I think the city of Lakeland has good energy. Maybe the interesting trivia fact that Lakeland once was a theme park has something to do with that! The sense of community was so obvious to me as I got to know the area more. Besides the highly rated school system, I noticed a strong sense of family and community while visiting there. I also discovered some pretty cool retail spots, like the Olive House Mediterranean grocery which I will now frequent.
Officially, Thanksgiving is a one-day holiday we celebrate in November, but I am thankful for so much every day, like you—our readers who continue to support us and make what we do so much fun.
Happy Thanksgiving and I hope you are surrounded by those people and communities that bring you joy and good energy!

"We love this home so much. I just want to hug the door frames every time I walk in! It's the house of our dreams.” Lauren Parker can’t help gushing about the East Memphis house she and her husband Mike Parker have shared for just over a year. “For this to be our first home, it’s just been so wonderful. Having the pieces that we love and stuff that we want to keep forever—it’s just been so much fun.”
The couple bought the house in August of 2021, got married the next month, and set about combining their lives and belongings. They enlisted the help of a talented designer from one of their favorite stores. Lauren is a long-time fan and customer of Worlds Apart, the Midtown outlet for high-end furniture manufacturer Worlds Away, also based in Memphis. “I’d go in to find a gift for someone and come out with a coffee table and a new piece of art,” she jokes. “But I still needed someone to help me pull it all together.” Through
her frequent visits, Lauren had become acquainted with Heather Cray, a stylist for the Worlds Away, and knew she could merge the couple’s styles and households to make sense. “The next thing I knew, I’m giving Heather a key to the house! Our relationship escalated quickly,” Lauren recalls.
“The couple had a mix of industrial, modern, mid-century, antique and traditional pieces,” says Cray. “To achieve the look they wanted, I leaned on the use of negative space and committing to using only two to three styles per room.” The designer also says she realized from the moment she first came into the house that Lauren loves things that are meaningful to her. From family antiques to mementoes from her hometown of New Orleans to reminders of Mike’s days working on western dude ranches, personal treasures play into Cray’s design in every room. Punched up with the color and Hollywood-glam style of Worlds Away pieces, the decor is eclectic, energetic and the perfect reflection of the homeowners.

even the exterior of the house represents the couple, notes Cray, pointing out that it features the wrought iron often seen in New Orleans, but on ranch-style architecture.
The 1950s-era floor plan lacks the open concept found in newer construction, but Lauren says she appreciates its defined areas. “Even the formal living room; that's a room I think we might never have used. We wouldn’t have known really what to do with it.” Cray’s creative design and ingenious use of a family heirloom armoire saved the living room from irrelevance. The beautiful piece, meticulously restored by The Restoratory by Jess Ada, not only visually anchors the room, it holds the Parkers’ entertaining supplies. Says Lauren, “It’s our party chest. We keep all our wine glasses and napkins in it. Now, when friends come over we have cocktails in here.”
The rest of the living room decor is a melange of pieces the couple had—the rug, the armoire, the couch and a huge fiddle-leaf fig—and additions from Worlds Away, including a pair of the company’s Frisco wing chairs and a colorful, three dimensional painting. The room’s original millwork, floors and traditional marble fireplace blend seamlessly with the more modern design elements added by Cray, who collaborated with Peyton Woodson on the project. Among those contemporary components are books and trays by New Orleans pop artist Ashley Longshore.
In the dining room, the feel is more subdued. Hanging above the space like a crown is a Ballard Designs gold ginkgo-leaf chandelier that Lauren fell in love with from the moment she laid eyes on it. The lacquered wood table is from Restoration Hardware. Lauren recalls, “We had two other options for tables before and nothing seemed right. My mom was in town and when she saw this on the website she said, ‘This one. You're going to turn that chandelier on and it's just going to glow.’ And that's exactly what happened and it’s perfect!”
Cray added a Worlds Away Jonah console and camel Shaw dining chairs, all with the brand’s signature Hollywood regency style, for just the right amount of mid-century sophistication. “I didn’t want to be too glam and have it fight with the architecture of the home,” she explains. “So we just did little pieces with a pop, but then kept it neutral.”
32 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • November 2022 HOME FEATURE
HOME FEATURE
simplesilk drapery panels and a fawn print rug keep the decor from being so dressy that the room goes unused. On the contrary, Lauren says the dining room is one of her favorite spots in the home and it’s been the setting of many memorable evenings. “Even when we had a crawfish boil. We had all the doors open and we staged the dining table with a bunch of food and cocktails and wine buckets.”
As subdued as the dining room is, the owners’ bedroom is a study in color and pattern. The room design came together during a single meeting at Worlds Apart. “Aside from a couple of antique pieces we had, we knew we wanted to treat ourselves to a whole new bedroom suite, says Lauren. A traditional oushak rug was the first selection for the room. Next up was the choice of fabric for an upholstered bed.
Mike made the call, picking a bold leopard print fabric without hesitation. “When he chose that, I looked at him and I thought, ‘I am marrying the right man!’” Lauren remembers.
Cray concurs, “I love testing boundaries in design and when a client isn’t afraid to go bold. When Mike said he wanted the leopard print fabric I said, ‘Let’s do it!”
Accent pillows in a vivid Asian tiger print plus a navy velvet coverlet and shams punch up the drama. A pair of mint green Worlds Away bedside chests provide cool tones as well as much-needed storage. Cray topped the nightstands with matching lamps that repeat the deep blue of the bedding, overhung with Adina mirrors in sleek silver frames. Burnt orange silk drapes complete the look with an additional pop of color.
November 2022 • athomemms.com | 35
"it's
never a bad thing to work from home here,” Lauren says, referring to the sunny office on the home’s north end. “It’s definitely a sanctuary. The dogs hang out in here with me and I’m in here from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.”
The walls are painted in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, but the space still has an airy feel, thanks to multiple north- and east-facing windows. Unlined bamboo shades provide privacy without blocking light. Again, the decor is a blend of pieces the couple brought together with their marriage and a few pieces added by Cray. Among those new acquisitions is a pair of end tables in vibrant orange. Mike’s framed vintage map of Crested Butte, CO, and Lauren’s Mardi Gras souvenirs find harmony in the room, also home to several thriving plants, beneficiaries of Lauren’s green thumb.
The Parkers’ experience in making their first house together a true home came about with remarkably little renovation; a fact for which Lauren is quick to credit the former homeowners. “The family before had great taste and it made moving in so simple. The only thing we had to do was paint the walls. Even the color of the doors and the old hardware, all of that has been here since before we moved in. The bathrooms and kitchen, everything was already done.”
They also dodged a common Covid-era roadblock by working with Cray and Woodson. As the outlet for Worlds Away, which sells to the trade and to luxury retailers like Neiman Marcus, Worlds Apart’s inventory is available for immediate purchase. In a time when homeowners undertaking renovations wait an eternity for furniture to arrive, the Parkers were able to make their dream home a reality in a very short span of time.
It’s just one more aspect of a concept that becomes evident in hearing Lauren talk about her home. The real reason she feels like “hugging the door frames” of her new home goes deeper than floor plans or furnishings. She declares, “The whole house has such good energy.”

after a two-year break, the Doors of Hope Transition Ministries Holiday House Tour will return Sat., Dec. 3. When the pandemic forced the organization’s fundraising committee to take a break from showcasing the classic homes of Oxford, MS, people were sincerely disappointed. “We heard from so many folks who look forward to the tradition of seeing homes beautifully decorated for the season,” says fundraising chair Susan Bartlett. “It’s a time to gather with family and friends, but also a time when people want to give back to their community.”
Doors of Hope Transition Ministries is dedicated to guiding homeless and at-risk homeless families with minor children toward self-sufficiency. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 28 percent of Mississippi’s children live in poverty; 19 percent of those children’s families are likely to face eviction from their homes in the near future. “While we do offer financial assistance with rent or utilities, the heart of our work is helping families learn life skills, navigate education and employment, and improve their health,” says executive director Mary Margaret Andrews. “This is an important fundraiser for us because it funds so many of those programs.”
This year’s tour will open five residences in the Park Drive and Zilla Avent Drive neighborhood from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., including the home of Mary and Sam Haskell. “We are thrilled to be a part of this year’s Holiday House Tour! Decorating for Christmas is our favorite time of year; or as we like to call it, ‘Decking the Hill.’ Sharing in this important cause with our Oxford community is the perfect way to kick off the season of giving,” says Mary Haskell.
Tickets can be purchased on location the day of the tour, or in advance through accelevents.com or doorsofhopeoxford.org. Raffle items will also be offered. For information on accessibility, contact Doors of Hope at 662.234.1100.

Holiday Harmony
STORY MICHELLE JOHNS
MA, LPC-MHSP (TEMP), NCC, 200 HR E-RTY, 500 HR RYT
it's
that time of year again—the holiday season! If you are like me, you may find that the holidays are like a box of chocolates, a variety of experiences. So much joy, anxiety, frustration, fun, love, challenge, family and friends. Following are some tips to help you experience more of the harmony and less of the harm of the season.
o Give the gift of making the time you spend with others about them.
o Ask questions about their family, their life, their interests, their home, etc.
o Try not to respond with a comparison of your life. Respond with terms of encouragement.
Practice self-care through meditation or quiet time. Perhaps make it the start of your day. Wake up 15 to 30 minutes earlier than normal to give yourself the gift of quiet time.
o Set a timer.
o Experience silence or perhaps enjoy some soft, meditative music.
o Sit comfortably.
o Close your eyes.
o Focus on your breath; notice the inhales and the exhales. As thoughts creep into your mind, acknowledge them and return your attention to your breath until you hear the timer.
o As your time comes to a close, make a commitment to face the day and all that comes to you with peace. If your peace is disrupted at any time during this day, acknowledge the moment, let it go, and recommit.
o Each day is a new day and sometimes each day begins again several times throughout the day!
Take three deep breaths before every meeting with people. Clear your mind, let go of expectations and bring your best when you encounter others.
o When someone is facing a challenge or struggle, try to respond with questions rather than advice. Be interested in what they are doing to live their best life and show respect for the ways they think are best to face their challenges.
o Treat others as if you think they are more important than you, even those who act like they are more important than you. Feed their ego and give them the love they are seeking.
Focus on the positives. I struggle at times with the gathering of the masses. It isn’t easy to be with everyone, but I have come to know I wouldn’t want to sit at home alone. Some people I encounter teach me how to love better through their gracious and loving ways, some teach me what not to do and how not to act, some inspire me with their perseverance through health issues and struggles, some teach me compassion and empathy. Everyone in the room brings value to my life. It’s not always easy for me and it never will be; there are too many people and too many encounters, but I wouldn’t change any of it.
I hope this helps you and I hope you have the best holiday season!

PRESIDENT'S
The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce is experiencing a revolution of growth and new business interest in our city, and it’s no surprise. Our chamber membership has grown substantially with the upstart of commercial development
taking place at different locations throughout the city. We are excited to welcome all the new businesses that have arrived and those that are on the way.
The City of Lakeland is anchored by one of the top-ranked school systems in the state of Tennessee. This has created a desirable environment for attracting families who desire a place to call home. As a result, the need for more business services has also been created.
The relationship between our elected city officials, city staff, economic development stakeholders and the chamber of commerce is one that has our city moving in the same direction with common goals. As one of the youngest established suburbs of the Memphis/Shelby County area, we realize that we have just started to scratch the surface and cannot wait to see what the future holds.

“W E LOVE LAKE LIFE IN LAKELAND! THE MEMORIES WE HAVE MADE WITH OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY HAVE BEEN PRICELESS. THIS IS SUCH A SPECIAL COMMUNITY TO US AND WE HAVE ENJOYED GETTING TO KNOW OUR GREAT GARNER LAKE NEIGHBORS. WE NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD BE VACATIONING IN OUR OWN BACKYARD!”

MANAGER'S
Our City of Lakeland, Tennessee, has gone through many changes over the years. Some people still remember Lakeland Amusement Park, the venture that saw the creation of 244acre Garner Lake as the largest manmade lake in Shelby County. Shortly after the amusement park ceased operating in 1976, Lakeland was incorporated as a city in 1977.
Today, the City of Lakeland encompasses a wide variety of geographic features within its over 23 square miles, including over 169 miles of streams in addition to Garner Lake. Our 236 acres of dedicated parkland includes International Harvester (IH) Park at 65 acres, two-and-a-half miles of trails, and the newest, the 99-acre site of the city’s recreation athletic complex is well underway.
For residents and potential residents, Lakeland offers shaded, canopied, curving roads, easy access to regional amenities in Shelby County, and the nicest homes in West Tennessee. In September, the Lakeland School System (LSS) was named one of only 16 Exemplary School Districts in Tennessee, and Lakeland Elementary School was named a 2022 Reward School, the highest distinction available to public schools in the state.
Along Lakeland’s Southern border are local venues for shopping, exercise, dining and vehicle care. At the I-40 and Canada Road interchange in the heart of the city, developers are working hard to bring to life The Lake District, the ambitious, multi-use development bringing shopping, dining, living and socializing together all in one place. And along Highway 70 just west of City Hall is the new Lakeland Commons development, with upscale flats over retail establishments, breathing new life to the historic traditions of Tennessee and small towns all across the Mid South.
Whether you are here to work, live or play, the City of Lakeland staff is just a phone call or an email away, ready and willing to assist with anything you need. Call, email or use the Lakeland Connect app to get in touch.
Lakeland is growing, while keeping its character and history intact. We’re excited to have neighbors new and old along for the journey, whether they live here, work here or simply come to visit – welcome home to Lakeland!

LAKELAND REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
If you are looking for something to do on a beautiful fall day, take a short drive to Lakeland, TN, just outside of Memphis. The Lakeland community has experienced quality growth in recent years that has been both strategic and deliberate. Long-term residents have been adamant about controlled growth and smart growth design that prevents the mass urban sprawl experienced in other cities. With a comprehensive master planning process in place and community input from its citizens, Lakeland seems to be making all the right moves in its quest to build a vibrant and sustainable community.
The public schools in Lakeland have achieved such high performance rankings in the last decade that they are now considered the best in the state. Upscale housing developments have been a strong trademark for Lakeland and have attracted homebuyers who seek both quality and conservation of resources. While driving through Lakeland, the city’s commitment to smart growth and attention to the preservation of resources like trees, hills, lakes and other rural features will be evident. Lakeland has also invested heavily in its parks, recreational facilities and outdoor venues for sports and family entertainment.
Garner Lake, a sparkling gem in Lakeland, is a 241-acre lake tucked into the heart of the city and is home to many residents who enjoy a private community on or near the water. Often referred to as “The Lakeland Lake,” this 266-home residential area has been home to many residents for years. Garner Lake is the largest lake in Shelby County and is 1.1 miles long, with eight miles of shoreline.

Other noteworthy neighborhoods have been developed in recent years offering modern, spacious designs for all family sizes. Many are described as upscale and private (gated). These high-end amenities are reflected in home prices, which average approximately $462,000 (average price per 2022 sales YTD). Recent demand for housing has been accelerated by Lakeland’s school system achieving the highest state rankings. Families have flocked to the quiet community, and there seems to be something for everyone in Lakeland.
Recent retail activity at Lakeland’s mixed-use and multi-family projects—The Lake District, Lakeland Town Square and soon-to-be Ashmont Place—will increase dining and shopping options for residents. The Lake District (150 acres) at Canada Road and I-40 is now opening phase 1 of its retail, including Frost Bakery, Starbucks, Lake District Wine and Liquor, Activate IV and Cryotherapy, Boba Society, Cycle Bar, Stretch Lab, Olive House Mediterranean Grocery and Chosen Lines Boutique, to name a few. Opening soon will be Gloss Nail Bar and Villa Castrioti Italian Restaurant.
The Willows townhouses are now under construction in the Lake District and offer an ideal option for homeowners wanting the benefits of new and modern construction with a smaller footprint.
Ultimately, the Lake District has plans for larger, single-family homes in phase 2, as well as large anchor tenants for the five outparcel properties along I-40.
If you’ve driven east on Hwy. 70 you may have spotted another real estate anchor project, Lakeland Town Square. The 40-acre, mixed-use development is designed to look and feel like a traditional town square. Phase 1 is opening soon and includes a sports bar (Owners Box), Margaritas and Carrington Oaks Coffee. Ashmont Place is a third real estate development currently on the drawing boards. Plans include 90 acres of mixed-use and multi-family housing on a parcel near the current Paintball Park location. Plans are underway now to develop this project, which was recently approved by Lakeland’s Board of Commissioners.
All of these projects are an effort to provide residents and visitors to the community with shopping, dining and other amenities. Currently the City of Lakeland has a comprehensive plan overseen by a committee of residents, architects, engineers and others. The goal is for future development to reflect conservation-minded attributes. Lakeland’s plan includes sustainable ways to support connectivity through trails and parks, not just roads, to develop a walkable, bikeable community.

GROWING HEALTHY
BY PAUL LUKER, PLANNING DIRECTOR, AND MICHAEL WALKER, CITY MANAGER
In the past 20 years, the City of Lakeland has experienced population growth that has far outpaced growth rates of nearby Memphis and Shelby County at large. With this growth come both opportunities and challenges, especially in the area of economic development. For that reason, the city is due periodically for a regular checkup to ensure it’s growing at a healthy rate. The first thing a healthcare provider does when a person visits is take the person’s pulse. In the same way, we’re taking the PULSE of Lakeland.
constituents are heavily engaged in the process.
The Lakeland PULSE team has held its first public meeting to obtain preliminary feedback and to start guiding the vision of the process. The plan should be completed by the end of 2023, and will guide Lakeland’s efforts into the next 10 to 20 years.
As we consider economic development in the city, we’re also looking at supporting needs, such as transportation, parks and open space, and, of course, our assets and opportunities.
The Lakeland PULSE Comprehensive Plan is designed to do just that, with its guiding principles of Preserve, Unify, Live, Strategize and Educate. The plan is heavily based on community feedback— taking the pulse of the city. Based on this feedback, the Lakeland PULSE Plan provides the guiding vision of where economic growth should occur, and what resources are needed to support and sustain this growth.
With the buzz in the air surrounding the nearby development of Blue Oval City, it is the perfect time for Lakeland to ensure that the city is not only poised for growth, but that it occurs in a healthy and sustainable manner. And we’re not taking on this task alone!
The city has a stellar team built with representatives from Kimley-Horn, LRK and The Development Studio. Additionally, citizens and
For transportation, early feedback shows a desire for enhanced connectivity of trails and sidewalks, while preserving the rural character of the city. In our parks and open spaces, future endeavors will center around this same concept of interconnectivity between parks, as well as greenways and trails extending beyond our borders. Among Lakeland’s many existing assets are ease of interstate access, the rural character and awardwinning schools. Opportunities for the desired healthy growth center around not only business development for restaurant, retail and service providers, but also office space that may potentially support the vast growth in West Tennessee expected with the arrival of Blue Oval City.
The efforts to ensure healthy growth are not new with the Lakeland PULSE Comprehensive Plan process. The city is currently home to two major mixed-use developments, Lakeland Commons and The Lake District, with a third, Ashmont, expected to begin soon. As these developments come online, we’re seeing the buzz build around Lakeland as not only the perfect place to live and educate children, but the perfect place to start, relocate or grow a business in a healthy way. What a perfect time to take the city’s pulse.

WHY LOCALS LOVE LIVING IN LAKELAND
Zadie E. Kuehl Memorial Park even has a new dog park to accommodate furry family members. Walking and cycling on the many trails in Lakeland is a part of everyday life, for recreation as well as transportation to and from school.
With new developments opening and growing, more dining options are available to our residents. Soon, Lakeland will have many options to sit down and have dinner with friends, in addition to its local bakeries, coffee, and tea shops. Fitness facilities have started to dot the Lakeland retail landscape, as have local boutiques and specialty shops.
Who wants to be involved? There are plenty of options in the City of Lakeland. Annual traditions such as the Youth Fishing Rodeo, Harvest Festival, Breakfast with Santa, parades and movie nights always bring a big crowd. Lakeland’s Summer Outdoor Concert Series and Delta Blues Winery both offer a seasonal line-up of live music, dancing, food trucks and fun for the whole family. The annual yard sale is a great opportunity to get out and find all the “treasures,” or to get rid of some.
Lakeland offers a variety of options for the athlete in the family. Flag football, tackle football and cheerleading, sponsored by the Parks and Rec Department, always start the season out with excitement. Youth basketball and soccer offer both competitive and recreational teams. Tennis players find plenty of opportunities for a match on the community courts in Windward Slopes Park. The city sponsors adult soccer and flag football, and grown-ups are always needed to help as youth sports coaches.
Lakeland is a community of growth with a familyfriendly environment. Even though it is so close to major roadways and with easy access to Memphis, it has a culture and lifestyle all its own.
“Don’t overlook this gem of a city; Lakeland offers a quiet family-friendly lifestyle with all the conveniences of being near Memphis.” —Megan Dupuy, Artist (Megan Dupuy Arts)
Parks are a large part of the Lakeland community. The city’s youngest residents love the playgrounds at City Hall, Windward Slopes Park, Zadie E. Kuehl Memorial Park and Oak Ridge Park.

THE LION PRIDE
The Lakeland Chamber is excited to unveil a collaborative project which several community partners have been working for years to complete. The pandemic influenced the timeline of this project, but the finish line is finally in view. The chamber purchased a pride of five fiberglass lions in 2019. Since then, they have lived in several spaces throughout the city, waiting to be painted, clear coated and installed. We would like to thank the following people for their part in this project:
Kevin Bailey – Fireworks City
Billy Rodgers – Billy Rodgers, Crye-Leike Chris Woods Construction
Ken Spain, Phillips Auto Body
Dr. Ted Horrell, LSS Superintendent
Michael Walker, Lakeland City Manager
Megan Dupuy – Artist, Megan Dupuy Arts
LSS Art Teachers: Rachel Nanney
Jared Parham
Stephanie Robinson
The Lion Pride will soon be on display at various locations throughout the city, including City Hall, Lakeland Prep, Lakeland Elementary, IH Park and Fireworks City. We hope you enjoy them—be sure to take a picture and share it with the chamber.

TEN REASONS RETAILERS ARE EXPANDING TO LAKELAND
BY AMY HOWELL
If you’ve been paying attention, you have noticed quite a few retailers opening in Lakeland, TN. Conveniently located off I-40 in Northeastern Shelby County, Lakeland is poised for growth–especially as corporate projects such as Ford’s “Blue Oval City” eyeball the region for expansions. Additionally, the Lakeland Schools are award-winning, top rated in the state and Lakeland has enjoyed a healthy influx of new residents seeking a quality education for their families.
It’s only natural for retailers and business owners to look to Lakeland’s thriving demographics for future and additional expansions. A few of note recently have been the tenants at The Lake District like Frost Bake Shop, Gloss Nail Bar, Starbucks, Chosen Lines, Lake District Wine and Liquors, and the list is growing as we publish. The Town Square, also underway, has retailers opening currently to serve the growing residential population in Lakeland.
1. Lakeland is underserved and does not have enough retail to meet the demand of the high-growth residential market.
2. Lakeland’s Cracker Barrel is consistently the highest performing store in the chain, which demonstrates the area’s excellent demographics for retailers.
3.
Lakeland is attracting the right types of development; its city leaders are being strategic about their comprehensive economic development plan. Codes and adherence to city guidelines ensure that growth will be deliberate and strategic. For example, many communities think “big box” retail is strategic, but Lakeland has a different vision and seeks quality, locally owned small businesses vs. national retailers.
4.
Lakeland residents’ lifestyle is attractive to the boutique retailers. The parks, recreation and quality of outdoor entertainment options are attracting health and fitness retail and others that support them. Retail examples include health and wellness, fitness and more.

We talked with some of the new-to-Lakeland retailers about the reasons they chose Lakeland.
Here is a summary.
LAKELAND LIFE • athomemms.com | 35
“We looked at all parts of Memphis and the surrounding areas, and we chose Lakeland because it was so inviting and friendly. Lakeland is a developed location in a lot of ways, but it also has a very fresh feel that is continually growing, but growing in the right ways. We definitely wanted to be part of this great community!”
—Jason McAlister, Cycle Bar and Stretch Lab
THE LAKELAND LIFE
5. Many don’t know that the median household income of Lakeland rivals that of Germantown and Collierville, making Lakeland an ideal location for attracting discretionary income spending.
6.
Lakeland taxes are attractive to families moving there. The evidence is in the growing number of new homes in the community.
7. Its location is easily accessible from everywhere in Shelby County. Lakeland is conveniently located off I-40 (Canada Road) as well as Hwy. 70 (Summer Avenue) and is accessible in 20 minutes or less from almost every part of Shelby County.
8.
Lakeland draws visitors from locations east of Shelby County including Dancyville, Brownsville, Jackson, TN and beyond.
9. The people of Lakeland support shopping locally. We heard this echoed many times while researching this article.
10. Lakeland has preserved its rural beauty and natural landscapes, making it a desirable place to live, work and play. Some communities grow by cutting down trees and altering landscapes. Lakeland’s leaders have been determined to maintain its natural beauty and resources–a quality many residents seek.
Lakeland is welcoming business owners who want to be involved and prosper in a growing community. Residents would like to see more restaurants, more entertainment, more sports bars, more things for kids to do, more wellness (spas, pharmacies, etc). We have a feeling it is going to be a very exciting place to be over the next few years and beyond.

LAKELAND SCHOOL SYSTEM
BY DR. TED HORRELL SUPERINTENDENT, LAKELAND SCHOOL SYSTEM
will serve our students as they learn, grow and lead. In addition, the campus is now home to a new athletic field house, office and concession buildings, more than 20,000 square feet in all. While these buildings are wonderful, what’s even more exciting and important is the quality of the teachers, staff and coaches who are returning or joining to share their talent and expertise. Principal Corrie Martin has an outstanding team of committed educators to take LPS into the future.
The 2022-23 school year marks one of the most exciting milestones in our community’s educational history: the opening of the high-school facilities of Lakeland Preparatory School. The Lakeland School System will begin serving high-school grades starting with our very first class of ninth graders. That same class will eventually become the first graduates of Lakeland Prep and the Lakeland School System. These new opportunities did not occur by happenstance, but reflect the commitment of the Lakeland leaders, parents, students and community members who have supported and encouraged our system’s educational goals throughout this journey.
When you visit the new high school, I hope you’ll find the same commitment that Lakeland has shown us reflected in the design and execution of our academic, athletic and fine arts spaces. The 240,000-square-foot addition in the main building includes a 2,000-seat varsity gymnasium, an 800seat auditorium, cutting-edge science labs, career and technical rooms, and myriad other spaces that
Lakeland Elementary School (K-4) principal Joretha Lockhart and her faculty and staff have laid the foundation for success. Since the inception of the Lakeland School System in 2013, the goal of our Board of Education (and many others) was to expand our initial K-5 system into a comprehensive K-12 system. This was largely based on the success and positive environment established at Lakeland Elementary and the desire to extend that same level of academic excellence, community partnership and student opportunity to all grade levels. This year, we collectively take a massive step in that direction.

We are grateful for the participation and feedback that helped shape the design and function of our new facilities. We also look forward to continued collaboration, support and understanding as we work through the challenges that growth and the mass creation of new opportunities will bring. I am confident that the same community and parental support that has led to the development of so many exceptional programs at LES and LPS so far will cause our new athletic teams, fine arts programs and academic endeavors to thrive.
We are thankful for the Lakeland community’s commitment to our school system, our students and our goal of providing the very best educational experience for our most important resource. I know I speak for Lakeland Board of Education members Kevin Floyd (chair), Laura Harrison (vice-chair), Jeremy Burnett, Michelle Childs and Deborah Thomas when I say it is an honor to serve the Lakeland community, and we look forward to sharing the continued successes of our students as we grow.
