GREEN CATHEDRAL STATION LYALL BAY
AXONOMETRIC STRUCTURE The concept was to create a light rail station that generates the euphoric experience of a barrel in a surf wave, influenced from the surf beach at Lyall Bay. The buildings timber and glass canopy creates similar light qualities, from the barrel, that vary throughout the spaces as it flows down over the buildings. The glass panel’s change from transparent too coloured and opaque panels, as the form moves down over the taller buildings smothering the surf shop at the other end. The canopy breaks from east to west following the bays surf break. Inside, the shop has a similar grid like roof structure that creates even more dense light qualities from the layering. The colours blend together and reflect off different surfaces that change with the sun like how a wave changes with the wind. The changing room in the shop has the full euphoric experience that only a few people will ever get the experience because it has three transparent layers. Acoustically the space stops noise transmission from the outside sounds of people and the light rail, as well the neighbouring surf workshop. This magical experience encourages people into the surf shop and then down to the beach.
