Millstone Park Join the stone adventure! The Millstone Park in Hyllestad is an outdoor museum in the largest stone quarry landscape from the Viking period and Middle Ages in Northern Europe. Here you will experience another side of history: The Vikings as skilled craftsmen and traders! At Millstone Park you will get a tour through the stone quarries. The Vikings toiled here more than a thousand years ago, with skill, sweat, and perhaps tears when yet another stone got a crack and broke. This was a world in which it was very important to be able to make things with one’s own hands. After the tour of the quarries you can also use your hands - or relax by the fire and enjoy something good to eat. From 18. June – 14. August, The Millstone Park is open every Tuesday – Sunday 11.00 – 16.00 • www.kvernsteinsparken.no

Geo trails In Hyllestad we can see traces of the collision between two earth plates (continents). A formidable, but slow collision that resulted in a large and high mountain range: the Caledonian mountain range. In Hyllestad you will find stories that can be traced back to this dramatic story. Booklet with an overview of geopoints can be found in a separate mailbox in the parking lot at SPAR in Hyllestad.

The venerable Prestegarden from 1870 can be found in the heart of Hyllestad Centre and is today a culture house with events and exhibitions. This summer there will be a café in Prestegarden. Open from 26. June – 7. August. Monday – Thursday 12.00 – 17.00 and Saturday – Sunday 11.00 – 16.00. The café serves light meals, cake, and ice cream.

Kvernhusfossen in Skor In Skor in Hyllestad you will find one of the finest aquaculture environments in the country: a concentration of five mill houses and a gated waterworks. The beauty of the aquaculture environment in Skor is that the Trondhjemske postal road goes right by the mill house. The aquaculture environment is part of a protected natural environment in the so-called bottom watercourse, which has a versatile function for several species of waterfowl in the region. Is it especially important as a nesting and migration site for ducks and wader. Other rare species in the region have also been found nesting in Skor.

Nesje fort In the summer of 1940, the German navy started the construction of a coastal fort on Nesje. It was important for the German navy to quickly establish a defense. The purpose of the fort was cannons that could reach beyond Sognesjøen. The fort is nicely located by the sea and has a full overview of the entrance to the Sognefjord.

Kayak Padle between islets and skerries along the coast and the fjord, or on a beautiful water in Hyllestad. Padling or canoeing is suitable for most people, and you will get close to nature in a way you might not experience otherwise. Nesje

Gygrekjeften, 708 masl, is the characteristic pointed and dramatic “tooth” on Lihesten, the top furthest east on Lifjellet towards Hyllestad center. Here the rock walk plunges almost vertically down into the Åfjord, while a solitary tooth protrudes beyond the abyss. The starting point at Lekva has two routes, Nipestien and a more accessible path. A round trip up to the popular Gygrekjeften takes approximately 5-6 hours.

Hiking trails

Leirvik – Kvernsteinsparken / Hyllestad The road from Leirvik to Hyllestad is approximately 7.5 km. mostly in slightly steep terrain. We can also recommend a detour to Birkeland Camping. Rent a canoe / kayak for a paddle trip on Aksevatnet.

en

The highest point at Lihesten is Risnesnipa with 777 masl. The trail is demanding, but the view from the top is worth all the effort. Start from Lifjorden by Hovland. Marked hiking trail to Hovlandsstølen on the Lihest plateau, 606 masl. The trail is marked with red cairns. 5-6 hours t/r.

Tips for tours on two wheels

Fjord & Panorama For a shorter trip you can cycle from Leirvik, along the fjord in direction of Heggebø / Lavik. We recommend a trip to the viewpoint Skogsvegen Panorama. You will find a hiking trail from Heggebø to the viewpoint. There is also a barbeque cabin on the top. Approximately 35 minutes walking to the top.

Rossvikheia, 301 masl Start at Aksevatnet / Birkeland. The first part of the trip goes along the Trondhjemske postal road, and then steeply up a clear path. Last part on bare rock. Robba, 673 masl From Robba you will have a view in every directions, Lavikdalen in the east, Sognefjorden in the south, large parts of Hyllestad in the west, with Åfjorddalen closest and Solund and island in Askvoll furthest out. There are two different marked hiking trails from Lavikdalen to Robba. You will find a marked trail from the large parking lot before Dugmundsos. Walking time: approximately 1.5 hours. Alternatively trail from Bog. Walking time: approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Skogsvegen Panorama, 225 masl Hiking trail from Hebbebø field west of Leirvik to the viewpoint and a barbeque cabin. Walking time: approximately 35 minutes. Signposted towards Sauesnyken. The Trondhjemske postal road The Trondhjemske postal road runs through a magnificent nature – over fjords and mountains, along water and over rivers. The postal road is like a living history book, despite the fact that many magazines have been curled and torned away. The Trondhjemske postal road is 40 km. and goes from Dale in Fjaler to Leirvik in Hyllestad. There were originally 19 stone bridges on the route between Dale and Leirvik, and many of them are still standing as proud and impressive examples of early dry masonry. You can either walk or bike. Most of the route is free from cars and idyllic.
