The Aerial Battle Museum

The Aerial Battle Museum commemorates and informs about a dramatic day towards the end of the war in Norway. A large Allied air force attacked a German naval force in the Førdefjord, but was itself attacked by German fighter planes. The Allies lost ten aircraft, the Germans lost five, and a total of 24 lives were lost. This was a day that left a mark on Sunnfjord and those involved. Memorials have been erected both in Scotland and in Førde. The squadrons and survivors continue to honor the fallen and aim to tell the story to help prevent history from repeating itself. The attack went awry, and too many young lives were unnecessarily lost. The museum houses artifacts from the wrecked planes, models, and a large photo collection from the event. A visit to the museum offers a close encounter with the incident and the parties involved. haajen.no/luftkampmuseum

Freshwater Fishing

Fishing for salmon and trout has a long tradition in Sunnfjord, both as a recreational activity and as a livelihood. Jølstravatnet is renowned as one of the best trout lakes in Europe, where you can fish for the famous Jølster trout. The combination of cold water inflow from the Jostedalsbreen glacier, rich nutrients, and a 30 km long lake with depths reaching 200 meters provides ideal conditions for the Jølster trout. Fishing in the lake is well regulated, ensuring highquality fish. Annually, around 15 tons of Jølster trout are caught. At the beginning of June each year, the fishing competition and festival “Jølster Trout Festival” takes place, utilizing the entire Jølstravatnet as its arena. Fishing permits, equipment, and boat rentals are available at Jølvassbu Camping and Lunde Tourist Station, where avid anglers are eager to share their expertise. Visit Jølvassbu Camping at jolvassbu.no or contact Lunde Tourist Station at lunde@turiststasjon.no.

The Nausta River, originating in the NaustdalGjengedal Landscape Conservation Area, flows through a lush landscape on its way to the mouth of the Førdefjorden. Here, you can fish for both salmon and sea trout along a 12.4 km stretch. The river features two waterfalls: Naustdalsfossen, located 1.5 km above the riversea boundary, and Hovefossen, another 2.9 km upstream. At the head of Naustedalen lies Vonavatnet, where targeted cultivation efforts in recent years have improved fish quality and size. The area and lake are easily accessible and serve as a great starting point for hiking and mountain excursions.

If you wish to rent a boat and venture out onto the beautiful Dalsfjorden for fishing, contact Dalsfjord Fishing Camp located in the harbor at Bygstad. They offer boat rentals and can provide tips on prime fishing spots. Contact them at dalsfjord@gmx.info.

Experience Osfossen at the Gaula watercourse in Sunnfjord, a place where history and nature converge. Here, you’ll find Norway’s first salmon ladder, built by an Irish fisherman in 1869. Standing at the water’s edge and witnessing the fish battle their way up the rushing currents is an experience in itself, whether you have a fishing rod in hand or not. Come and be inspired by this unique natural spectacle, where the salmon’s journey is the main attraction.

The Gaular watercourse is among the largest in Western Norway, stretching nearly 70 km. It originates in the southern parts of the Jostedalsbreen and Grovebreen glaciers, 1600 meters above sea level. Further up the watercourse, you’ll find Haukedalsvatnet, Hestadfjorden, and Viksdalsvatnet, all excellent starting points for trout fishing. Fishing permits can be purchased at most accommodations and stores in Gaular. Fishing permits for different areas can be obtained at inatur.no.

National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet

Gaularfjellet is one of 18 National Tourist Routes in the country, and by definition, these routes “pass through the very best of Norwegian nature”. Many would agree. The route stretches from Balestrand to Holsen in Sunnfjord with a branch from Eldalsosen to Sande. From Vetlefjorden in Sogn, there are 9 hairpin bends leading to the spectacular viewpoint Utsikten. The platform balances on the edge of the mountain, offering views of deep valleys and peaks rising up to 1700 meters. Towards Sunnfjord, the road descends past numerous roaring waterfalls and along sparkling lakes strung like pearls in the protected Gaular watercourse. “The Silver Bridge” at Likholefossen is one of many popular photo spots.

Fossestien (Waterfall Trail)

Fossestien is a spectacular 21 km long hiking trail that stretches from Gaularfjellet towards Viksdalen. On this hike, you will experience the power of nature up close, with a total of 12 impressive waterfalls and 6 beautiful lakes. The trail follows a branch of the protected Gaular watercourse, offering an extraordinary hiking experience. This wellmarked trail is accessible to all and follows old animal tracks and pasture paths. The upper part of the trail coincides with the historic driving route between Western and Eastern Norway, adding an extra dimension to the hike. Along the way, you will pass through lush and varied landscapes, ranging from untouched nature to active agricultural areas. Starting points with signs, maps, and parking can be found at Eldal, Likholefossen, Longestølen, and Torsnesstølen, making it easy to customize the hike according to your preferences and needs. There are opportunities for sport fishing, and you can find plenty of berries and mushrooms. Transport service along Fossestien is available from Hov Hyttegrend every day at 10:00 during the season. The cost is NOK 50 for adults and NOK 30 for children per person.
