Eco-friendly – line-caught Longlining is the most eco-friendly fishing method. Gentle treatment and a fast process from catching the fish to freezing provides a perfect starting point for delicious dishes and good fish dinners. Frøyanes is the world’s most modern longliner. It prepares the fish onboard so that consumers can enjoy tasty, simple and delicious raw materials. It takes care of all the raw materials and the surrounding environment. Sea-frozen fish are fresh. A quality process from seabed to a customer well-fed.
4
Food for the world Ervik Havfiske is proactively leading the way in the eco-labelling of cod and haddock from the Barents Sea. The fishery is certified by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), one of the leading, if not the leading, eco-labels in the world. Together with Domstein, the company is certified pursuant to the Swedish KRAV label for Norwegian cod and haddock. Most of the boats are certified pursuant to these rules. Longlining is an eco-friendly fishing method. The method is selective in relation to species and size. It cause very little damage to the seabed and provides high quality catches while consuming little fuel. Responsible fishing means catching the right fish, at the right age, in the best possible condition, and as efficiently as possible. In other words, protecting the safety of the crew and causing as little damage to the environment as possible.

Ervik Havfiske is among the world’s leaders and most modern companies in the industry.
- Good fish deserve proper processing. - Consumers deserve good fish. - Fishermen deserve more for quality fish and good fish products. The route from the seabed to a customer well-fed should be quality assured. The raw materials should be prepared onboard while the fish is still fresh, and processing should take place before freezing and without unnecessary delays. Stig and Kjell Magne Ervik’s vision was of a longliner which took the consumer, food resources and raw materials seriously. A boat that took care of bycatch, offal and all parts of the fish raw material. While at the same time, providing the crew with good, safe working conditions, instruction and training. A longliner that could fish efficiently in an eco-friendly manner. Which would provide good earnings and make a positive contribution to the shipowner’s financial results. A boat that produces consumer-ready fish products in portion packaging. That can pack whole round fish delicately. That can vacuum pack and can. That can produce according to the customers’ wishes. And, at the same time, produce specialities from liver, roe
and milk. For niche markets in Asia, as well as the high volume markets in Europe, the USA and China. Their vision became a reality - MS FRØYANES It all started with two young, courageous fishermen - second cousins Stig and Kjell Magne Ervik, and MS Frøyanes in 1987. The boat was named after the fishing boat their grandfathers, Jetmund and Julius Ervik, owned in the 1950s. With hard work, good noses for business, and experience they have built up and developed a longliner company from measly beginnings in 1987 to one of the world’s largest today. The longlining takes place in some of the toughest waters there are, in winter and in the polar night. After 5 years of both ups and downs, the young longliners from Ervik bought boat number two. In 1995, Ervik Havfiske had a fleet of four large fishing boats: Frøyanes, Frøyanes Jr, Lyngholm and Statthav. The following year Ervik Sjøfisk Invest AS (later Ervik Havfiske AS) saw the light of day. The goal was to acquire more new boats, and during 1998 they took delivery of four new boats. Since then, it has

been non-stop. In 2001, they built the new Frøyanes, which was the first longliner with diesel-electric propulsion. The company has helped secure capital for fishermen who want to get their own boat, deals with joint agreements with suppliers, and coordinates the operation of the boats. The people behind Ervik Havfiske have always had a genuine interest in the industry and the ability to think long-term. They have never been scared of taking a gamble. The longliner company has been a pioneer throughout its history. It have developed from traditional operations with traditional tools into a company at the forefront of testing, developing new concepts, and constantly trying out new areas of ocean. Over time, Norway’s largest longliner company - Ervik Havfiske - has established a presence in almost all of the world’s oceans. Its success clearly has to do with the fact that the owners have dared trust each other and gamble on good colleagues and partners.

Natural and local driving forces Ervik Havfiske Holding AS, and the companies in the Ervik Group, are run from Stad and the offices on the seafront. Modern fishing and shipowning activities involve a complex system of companies, administration, logistics and people. From an ultramodern head office, an almost global organisation is administered, which involves national and international rules, regulations, finances and operations. People from Stad have fished and sought out challenges for thousands of years. The Ervik Group’s office windows do not just look out over the coast of Stad - they look out over the world and the world’s food production.
in Stadlandet. Besides using local suppliers for services such as bunkers deliveries, bait, financing and insurance, it has its own companies located in Stad that deal with provisions services, maintenance and accounting.
The Ervik Group wants to generate activity in the local community beyond the boats being based
The companies also service the rest of the local business sector. 8
Ervik Havfiske AS – Norway’s largest longlining company -18 °C. This preserves the good quality of the fish. In 2010, our boats delivered more than 20,000 tons of high quality products, primarily as headless/gutted fish. The catches mostly consist of cod, haddock, ling, and cusk, and are caught on Norwegian and Russian quotas. The fishing takes place in the Barents Sea, North Sea and Norwegian Sea, as well as in EU waters. Through our partnerships with French and British companies, we are involved in advanced, demanding fishing for Patagonian toothfish in which substantial Norwegian competence in the development and carrying out of fishing is involved. Inspectors onboard monitor the
fishing and ensure that an important resource is properly managed and that vulnerable nature is protected. More than 1,500 tons of the gourmet Patagonian toothfish come from the Southern Atlantic Ocean and Antarctica. In the 2011/12 season, the Group will also have a Norwegian flagged boat in this fishery in addition to the other three from the UK/France. Ervik Havfiske AS is proactively leading the way in the ecolabelling of fisheries in both the north and the south. This work is ongoing.

Nordic Marine delivers supplies and equipment in containers that are sent to America and Africa to supply boats in the Ervik fleet. Nordic Marine delivers both bunkers and bait, as well as a large range of tools and spare parts, and all the other equipment modern fishing boats need. The professionals in their own joinery department carry out the maintenance onboard the boats.
Vest Økonomisenter AS
Arctic Linefish AS
In 2008 the company moved to the industrial park in Borgundvågen in Stadlandet where it has its own workshop and offices, as well as a warehouse and production hall. Its location here, at the middle of the shipping lane between Måløy and Ålesund, provides the company with ready access to its own and the local authority’s quays. Westmek produces equipment for processing fish onboard seagoing fishing boats. The company plans, designs and installs equipment made from stainless steel, acid resistant steel and aluminium throughout North Western Norway. The company also does work on other vessels and carries out class work through a good, close collaboration with Det Norske Veritas, Bureau Veritas and the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. The company also provides services to onshore industrial facilities and the fishing farming industry in the region.
Nordic Marine AS was founded in 1996, and is located in Otneimsneset in Stadlandet. Here the company has one 13 metre and one 40 metre long quay, and modern warehouses for supplying fishing boats, both domestic and foreign.

Arctic Linefish AS is our sales company. As the name suggests, the company mainly focuses on selling line-caught fish. The company participates in fish auctions and buys fish not just from the Ervik Group’s boats, but also from other longliners in Norway. The raw materials bought and sold are primarily so-called H/G products, i.e. headless and gutted fish Fish that arrive onboard alive and are dealt with one by one, and where the period between coming onboard and being frozen is short, results in top quality. It is important for us that Arctic Linefish AS promotes the special quality achieved by longlining. We take consumers’ environmental requirements and demands for sustainable fishing and safe food seriously. Arctic Linefish AS is MSC approved for the sale of Norwegian Arctic cod, saithe and haddock.
Westmek AS
Vest Økonomisenter AS is an authorised accountancy firm and handles the accounts of most of the companies in the Ervik Group. The firm also keeps the accounts of companies and businesses outside the Group. The firm has employees with more than 25 years’ experience in accounting and lot settlements for shipowners. The firm can also provide services such as bookkeeping, billing, payroll and tax return assistance for fishermen. Vest Økonomisenter is located in the office building in Otneimneset, Stadlandet.
Vestkapp Handel AS The Joker shop in Refsnes, near the Vestkapp Plateau, was founded as a village shop in 1978. The employees eventually took over the shop when the original owner wanted to retire. Close ties with the Ervik Group resulted in Ervik Havfiske AS coming in as a co-owner. The shop deals with and organises deliveries of provisions for the Group’s boats, either directly from the shop or through agreements with other suppliers around Norway where the boats might call to unload catches. The shop is also the local shop for the villages on Ytre Stadlandet and a large provider of jobs for women in the district.

Ervikfisk AS is the brand for line-caught, frozen, consumerready fish from Ervik Group. Vacuum packed cod, haddock, ling, cusk, halibut and special products. Ready for the pan. The goal is to build up a quality product in the retail trade based on catches and production from Frøyanes, supplemented by consumer-ready products from other boats in the fleet. Ervikfisk will be available in the shops - for the pleasure of consumers in Norway and the rest of Europe.

Ervik Havfiske AS is the ’operator company’ in what is often called Norway’s largest longlining company. Today, we are involved in the operation of 15 longliners and one trawler. Ervik Havfiske AS has ownership interests in seven of these via subsidiaries and associated companies. In addition to this, Frøyanes AS has ownership interests in four other boats. There are various cooperation agreements with the other boats. All the fishing, with MS Stålholm as the exception, involves bottom lines with automated baiting. The fish are brought onboard one by one. As soon as the fish is onboard, it is sent through the production lines and then onwards to freezing at a temperature of less the

FRØYANES
- the most modern in the world Frøyanes is the largest, most eco-friendly longliner ever built. Below deck there is a canning and filleting factory. Finished, vacuum packed fish products are produced onboard - ready for the fish counter in the large supermarkets. The products maintain a high level of quality and can result in better prices. Frøyanes represents a quantum leap in relation to previous new builds in the company, both as far as size and innovations are concerned. The boat is 60 metres long and 14 metres wide. The first things you are struck by when you come onboard are the safety, contentment and comfort. And of course the efficiency. You are left with little doubt that Kjell Magne and Stig Ervik have incorporated their decades of experience into the practical and technical solutions. And all the expertise in the company is being used when it comes fishing and operations. The word ’fisherman’ takes on a new meaning when
you come onboard. A gym, sauna, cinema, lounges, sitting room and mess with fine woodwork and designs. The bridge is as large as the average flat, the galley is hotel kitchen standard, and the cabins are as good as hotel rooms. All the electronics are ultramodern. The monitoring of the boat and fishing has been automated. The equipment onboard includes diesel-electric propulsion, a moonpool, three modern factories, and the latest equipment in baiting, setting and dragging systems. It is also the first longliner in the world with a canning factory. Tins of liver will be produced first. Previously this resource was frozen onboard for sales
and further processing onshore. But it is difficult to maintain the quality of a frozen product like this. Fresh liver from cod and ling, canned shortly after it is hauled onboard and gutted, results in top quality. The canning factory provides exciting opportunities. The idea is to be able to use everything from the fish, including entrails and offal. These residual products are currently not being used. The new factory in Frøyanes can, for example, produce cat and dog food. However, offal and bycatch could be used to a much greater degree. The company is working on this with various research environments. MS Frøyanes is the most modern and, not least,

the most eco-friendly fishing boat in the world. The longliner has a frequency controlled diesel-electric propulsion system, which significantly reduces the boat’s consumption of fuel. The CWI system that humidifies the air sucked into the engine, reduces oil consumption (lowers CO2 emissions) and results in reduced NOx, an environmentally hazardous exhaust gas. Siemens delivered the diesel-electric propulsion system. Marin Teknikk AS on Herøy was responsible for the design and drawings.
”The diesel-electric propulsion system will result in fuel savings of around 30 per cent in relation to conventional diesel propulsion. The boat can carry
600 tons, plus 200 tons of supplies (bait, provisions and other consumables). The new hull shape, which was tested in a model tank and optimised for low hull resistance, provides the new build with a speed range of around 13 knots. Frøyanes has a crew of 2022 people compared to the normal 15 for a boat like this. However, this will be more profitable in the long-term.” The factories onboard are part of Ervik Havfiske’s vision and ideas for the future. There are machines for both single fillets and portion packing (vacuum). The goal is to produce consumer friendly and ready labelled packs of fish. These are packed in cases, which are then delivered right to the shops.

New ideas and innovation Frøyanes – and developing the concept of consumer-ready fish produced onboard - entailed new ideas, innovation and business development. Innovation Norway believes this is a good example of how business can be developed on the basis of regional conditions.
We finance good projects
The expertise in Stad with regard to longlining and seagoing longliners is the best in the world. Their knowledge about, and development of, new fishing technology and new business concepts are strengthening Norwegian industry internationally, and means high quality and greater recognition for Norwegian raw materials. Consumers around the world are gaining access to eco-friendly, line-caught, quality fish. ”Innovation Norway’s mission is to promote commercially and socio-economically profitable business development throughout Norway. It is important in Sogn og Fjordane to realise the region’s business opportunities by facilitating innovations, internationalisation and profile raising,” says special consultant Atle Torvanger (photo) of Innovation Norway. ”It has been natural and important for us to participate in the development and financing of Frøyanes. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with the marketing and internationalisation of the products.” Innovation Norway’s maritime value creation programme aims to strengthen the seafood industry’s ability to exploit its advantages. ”The Norwegian seafood industry’s most important advantage is maritime raw materials from cold, clear seas. This matches well with building up the Ervikfisk brand and consumer-ready fish from the longliner fleet. Innovation Norway is doing its bit to improve the competitiveness of the Norwegian fishing industry,” says Atle Torvanger.

Ervikfisk
– The brand name for quality
The next time you visit the shop, you should ask for Ervikfisk. This is the brand for fish from Frøyanes. If you want a delicious fish dinner, you will not find a simpler way. Fillets or sliced fish in delicate vacuum packs. If you have a knife and a pan, dinner could be ready in a few minutes. You can find exciting recipes in the shop or online. Not just fish dishes, but sauces and trimmings. Many good chefs prefer line-caught, sea-frozen, quality fish. Line-caught fish means that it arrives onboard the boat alive. During the next 4-5 hours the fish is prepared for freezing in modern deep freezers onboard. The fish is vacuum packed without first being defrosted. The freezing chain is thus guaranteed from the boat to the shop counter.
This means that you the consumer can feel confident that the product you are buying is in many ways better than fresh fish. Fresh fish takes time to get to the market and during this time its quality diminishes, depending on how long this takes from the time it is caught. The entire business concept of Frøyanes and the Ervikfisk brand is line-caught, frozen quality direct to the consumer.
Ervikfisk delivers products in a class of their own. Frøyanes is fitted with both cabin and meeting room capacity so it can accommodate representatives of retail chains, salespeople and international distributors. The goal is to be able to plan production with major buyers and sales links. Onboard Frøyanes they can learn about the products, see how the longlining and quality production take place, as well as enjoy a maritime experience that produces a very special relationship to Ervikfisk as a product.
Defrost the pack of fish in the fridge overnight, prepare and enjoy some of the best the sea can offer. The goal is to ensure more Norwegian consumers access to quality fish from Ervikfisk. The major international retail chains are hunting for good fish products, and many of them have discovered that

At the TV cooks’ table
Longlining out of Stad and fish from Ervikfisk are popular on the TV screen as well. In the TV series ’New Scandinavian Cooking’, which is aired around the world, celebrity and TV cook Andreas Viestad praised the line-caught, frozen fish. The framework for this international TV programme was pan fried haddock, with the coast of Stad and a moderate gale as the backdrop.
Scala Industrivekter supplies electronic scales and scales solutions
Andreas Viestad’s face is known to many foodies. He is famous for making food outdoors, and in the Ervikfisk episode he made the food in Ervika and Stad, and onboard a longliner. The episode has been seen by viewers of the largest Norwegian and Nordic channels, viewers in Asia and the USA, and viewers of BBC Worldwide.

FISKEVEGN
Knowledge – experience – efficiency It’s about catching fish and bringing the fish onboard from the sea. Knowledge about tools and lines is vital for success at sea. Fiskevegn is a knowledge-based company that has, for decades, developed equipment for fishing. Knowledge about material choices, technical solutions and practical use provide the basis for all the activities of this line and equipment producer in the Municipality of Selje. Fiskevegn understands the financial and efficiency needs of fishermen. The company is at the cutting edge when it comes to making fishing more eco-friendly. New materials that do not contain polluting substances and efficient equipment that fishes well and is easy to handle are areas of focus. ”We are a knowledge-based company that strives to convert practical experience into new technology” says the managing director of Fiskevegn, Trond-Inge Kvernevik. ”Today, Fiskevegn functions as a consultant for boats and shipowners entering the longliner industry. We offer both products and know-how for profitable fishing. This provides security for our new customers at home and abroad.”
Given how longlining works, if a boat is out at sea with equipment that does not work, or is ready to go to sea and has not received everything it needs, it costs a lot of money. The financial drop is huge, and there is generally a great deal of risk in the industry. That’s why it is important that things work, are reliable, that equipment is delivered on time, and that suppliers are flexible and able to deliver. ”I think Fiskevegn has the understanding of the industry and experience necessary to be a reliable partner for the fishing fleet,” says Kvernevik. ”Fiskevegn is one of the world’s leading producer’s of lines and line equipment, and also delivers equipment to both the Norwegian and the international longliner fleet. The company is constantly striving to refine its products with respect to both quality and the environment. Fiskevegn is internationally recognised for having contributed to an approximately 90 per cent reduction in seabird mortality with the development of its fast sinking IW line. We deliver line and equipment to most of the international longliner fleet in the Southern Ocean, including the Ervik Group’s fleet taking part in the hunt

for Patagonian toothfish. Today, the IW lines hold a dominant position in fishing equipment for longlining in these areas,” says Kvernevik. ”Fiskevegen has been close to fishermen and fishing boat companies for many years. Even though we are very much an international market player, our proximity is one of our strong sides,” says Kvernevik. ”The long, good partnerships with Ervik Havfiske and the developers of MS Frøyanes have entered a new epoch with the new ’super boat’ and our complete delivery of line equipment. Here we combine the technology of the future and forms of operating with well-tested equipment concepts.” ”It is obvious that the line is critically important for good

fishing. We have developed swivels, hooks, tackle and impregnation into efficient, eco-friendly equipment. The lines for Frøyanes are produced by our most experienced employees.”
Sales managers Harald Myklebust and Jakob Hals emphasise that Fiskevegn has benefited well from its partnershipwith Ervik Havfiske. ”Ervik Havfiske is near us, and we have had a close
partnership since Stig and Kjell Magne started the company. Through this partnership we have received a lot of useful feedback and advice that have enabled us to improve our product development.”
”The feedback from their fleet of industry-leading boats has been important for the development of our products. We have often sent out samples with them, and got feedback on how the products work in practice. We believe Ervik Havfiske has for its part benefited from the innovation and contributions of Fiskevegn in the building up of the world’s most successful longlining company,” say Hals and Myklebust. ”Good tackle must include a line with a high breaking strain, that is durable, and has good coiling properties, as well as a good swivel and hook system. Fiskevegn has delivered complete tackle for Frøyanes, consisting of 11.5 mm line, with new, strengthened X-Clip swivels in stainless steel. We have also delivered our new ’LA hook’, which is a strengthened 12/0 hook. Fiskevegn developed this in partnership with its hook manufacturer, Eagle Claw from the USA, based on feedback from experienced fishermen. Fiskevegn puts a lot of effort into being a total supplier to the fishing fleet. In addition to the line tackle, we provide hook repairs. We deliver anchors, end line, buoys, and other

– A company we trust ”The story that Kjell Magne and Stig Ervik started their partnership with Sparebanken Møre with collateral in two used cars is true. They had a good portion of self-confidence and some daring goals,” says Bank Manager Svein Thue. ”Over 25 years, they have proved themselves worthy of our trust. They ’deliver’ as agreed.” ”The Ervik Group and Sparebanken Møre have a very good partnership. Good communication. They submit well-documented applications and reports. Have good management systems. Are always up-todate with budgets and accounts.”
boats. Competence and good histories are afforded great weight.” ”We want to be close, competent and solid,” says Bank Manager Svein Thue. ”Close - as in knowing the customers, having a presence in the geographic area where the customers are, and making our decisions locally.
Competent - in relation to understanding the industry, knowing the customers and fisheries, and having, for example, your own industry team within fishing.” SPAREBANKEN MØRE Keiser Wilhelmsgt. 29/33, N-6003 Ålesund. Tel (+47) 7011 3000 - www.sbm.no
”This has resulted in Sparebanken Møre having a significant commitment relating to Frøyanes. We lent them NOK 57 million for the new boat,” says the bank manager. ”Innovation Norway provided the same amount. During the building phases we provided the necessary guarantees to the shipyard amounting to around NOK 100 million and building loans of NOK 30 million.” ”In our opinion, MS Frøyanes is a milestone within autoline. Better earnings and easier to recruit to the boats. Higher quality for the consumer - easier to build a brand. Better solvency in the company, which provides the basis for new investments.” ”Sparebanken Møre is proud to be able to take part in future-oriented innovations,” says the bank manager. ”We believe that the company is an expert in the technique of finished production onboard. The challenges lie perhaps more in the sales link. The project’s profitability does not depend on complete finished production. Nonetheless, finished production is something to strive for, and something one is paid well for if one is successful. Sparebanken Møre is very committed to and has a clear strategy for fishing and development,” says Svein Thue. ”The bank is currently lending around NOK 15 billion to industry. Lending to fishing amounts to around 23 per cent of this. The bank is involved in financing within freezer trawling, autoline, coastal boat and ringnot. Our strategy is based on maintaining and developing our fishing portfolio. The emphasis is on new projects with the potential for long-term stable earnings and stable values for

CWI for NOx Reduction on M/S Frøyanes
We congratulate Ervik Havfiske AS with Frøyanes world largest line vessel. M/S Frøyanes is equipped with CWI, possibly the most cost effective NOx reduction method for diesel engines delivered by ADB Power ApS. The CWI System is unique because the operation is not followed by an increased fueloil consumption. The CWI System (“Continuous Water Injection”) for air humidification is developed by M.A. Turbo/Engine Ltd, Canada. In December 2010 CWI was installed on the vessels M/S Froyanes Senior and M/S Seljevaer, also operated by Ervik Havfiske A/S. ADB Power ApS is a Danish Engineering and Contracting Company with specialist expertise in diesel exhaust treatment. Besides CWI for min 25% NOx reduction we offer ADNOX for 90% NOx reduction with diesel oil as reductant.
We wish Ervik Havfiske and the crew the best of luck with a better way to fish.

When a job needs doing properly
Westmek is a purveyor of fish processing equipment - not just to the Ervik fleet, but also to a number of other seagoing vessels. The factory and production equipment onboard MS Frøyanes are of classic Westmek quality. The company plans, designs and installs equipment made from stainless steel, acid resistant steel and aluminium throughout North Western Norway. For this project, the company sent employees to work in Turkey for a prolonged period to ensure the factory
and production equipment were properly installed. Stadlandet has been producing equipment for fishing and other industries since the mid 1990s. Westmek represents a continuation of this tradition. The company was founded in 2004. For the Ervik Group fleet, Westmek means service
and availability close to its home base. Westmek’s base in Borgundvåg has a high capacity and space for extensive projects. For our longliners, and also the rest of the fishing fleet. We also produce storage tanks and transporters, and carry out projects for the shipyard industry.

Naming ceremony and public party for MS FRØYANES Ervik Havfiske’s new flagship MS Frøyanes was named in gusting wind on 29 October 2011. Hundreds of visitors were gathered in Borgundvåg to see the bottle be smashed against the side of the boat - on the second attempt - and listen to lady sponsor Michelle Louise Ervik wish the boat and crew luck and happiness on their voyages.
