U.S.E URBAN SPATIAL & EXPERIMENTATION The topic for this year is to develop projects and spatial strategies for a site located along the Rheinische Strasse in Dortmund, Germany. The area is currently undergoing substantial changes as an urban regeneration area called Stadtumbaugebiet Rheinische Strasse. As part of Emscherkunst 2016, Urbane Kuenste Ruhr (UKR) and students from the Kunstakademie Muenster will be staging artistic interventions in this area which are chosen through a competition.

We aim to develop spatial strategies in the Unionviertel. The new strategies for this location can vary from minimal interventions to substantial buildings with the ultimate aim to create a long term use. Through a thorough analysis and survey of the site as well as research about Dortmund, strong concepts have to be explored. These ideas will be developed in various steps throughout the year.

PROJECT FRAMEWORK

Methodology Applying the theory as a pair of ‘lens’ in order to analyze Dortmund. This became a method of understanding current issues on site; in terms o physical and social.

Site Study Investigating the site by preceiving it as the human anatomy (like how it is done in acupuncture) and then applying the method of acupuncture towards specific areas, known as ‘acupoints’

Programs & Users Future activities and programs on site are emphasizing on creativity and arts in the Unionviertel. With the Support of Dortmund City Council and many other corporate bodies, these activities and events are organized and held by Kreativ. Kuartier RUHR, involving many kinds of creative programs that incorporates arts and culture

Spatial Needs

Design Scheme

Realisation

Artists in the Unionviertel have been using the given spaces to hold many private activities depending on the programmes organized, although there seem to be lacking of spaces for gathering and also to cater to these particular activities. This project explores a design scheme that will be more accessible to the public and ties together as activation of space in the Unionviertel

The spaces are organized and designed in a way that they don’t obstruct the existing circulation, it allows pedestrians and vehicles to move around the building. The scheme allows maximum usage of plot on site.

A full set of scheme and of tectonics are prepared for the final stage of this project. An exploration of spaces, materials and construction are then considered to ensure practicality, buildability and quality of the scheme.

Abstract Urban Acupuncture

Re-Imagining Planning: Creative arts as a catalyst for wellbeing in the Unionviertel Initially I started to find a form of method to investigate problematic areas and issues in the Union Viertel. I have explored into the theory of Urban Acupuncture through an environmentalist perspective with Chinese medical theory of acupuncture. The process of small scale-interventions could transform and result to a big impact in the urban environment. Hence amplifying the role of an architect through an acupuncturist perspective. Sites were selected through structures of economic, social and ecological factors. Therefore it is then developed through relieving ‘stress in the body’, urban acupuncture relieves stress in the Union Viertel. It will then be produced through small scale but socially catalytic interventions in the city’s fabric. This strategy will view the city as breathing and living organisms and ‘pinpoint’ problematic areas in need or repair – as well as non-problematic areas in need of sustaining its wellbeing. This project will then serve as ‘needles’ that heals the body as well as revitalizing the livelihood of the city.

5.2 Reflection

Acupuncture will be an approach that serves the nature and and understanding of ‘pressure’ points in the city as well as it does in our bodies. Through an understanding of the mentioned elements, I have processed a concept that derives a deeper understanding not only in urban acupuncture approach, but also by having a certain method of understanding and identifying the selection of ‘points’ in the site. Such strategies will the entail a series of “5 elements” as a representation of the area’s certain function of use or program. This will then assist on looking into the site into a wider perspective but also into the urban fabric but also understanding a more ‘sensitive’ points in the locale scale. Such points may be obvious and evident whereas some other points could often be overlooked depending on the method of analysis into each areas. Each analysis of areas differs to one another, as the functional use provides and convey different impacts. These elements will then complement one another in relation to somehow treat the areas as well as giving room for improvements.

5.2 Reflection

The elements of acupuncture were acting as a formula in the latter half of design approach. The actions occuring between the elements will then be categorized as Modules representing the intervention. Each sites will require different modules, in accordance to it’s specific problems. Modules are an act on insertion and replacement towards the sites. Specific strengths and weaknesses of the area will be joined by these two elements which will then approach an urbal renewal plan of the Unionviertel, especially the area around Rheinische Straße itself. Initially, I envisioned the approach of acupuncture mangnifies it’s method into micro scale analysis and intervention, this creates a relationship between a path of masterplanning. Whereby making small changes into a city could lead to big impacts.

A hand-drawn planning of observation towards connecting the spaces identified into a future developmental scheme.

5.3 : REFORMULATE Urban Acupuncture

The method of acupuncture were then demonstrated into into an in depth theory. The acupoints in the city serves as a ripple effect that are engaging with one another.

The design scheme aims to activate a spaces in the city not just on the functional characteristics of the building fabric but also tries to find plausible connections betweem them.

The biggest impact of the ripple is the acupuncture itself which is the ‘place’, that will act as a main intervention for this scheme.

The possible connections were identified as ‘acupoints’ in the city, where various of existing programs in unionviertel, mainly emphasizing on the creative people in Dortmund.

The proposed program for the project aims for interventions through the broader aspects of culture, arts, education and recreation. Spaces for performance, research, workshops, studios are provided in the centre.

The ripple effect creates a challenge of partnership between the arts and urban regeneration through the community in order for them to be inclusive in the environment. It is only through the involvement of the people of the city that the development can work.

Unionviertel is located on the east side of Dortmund, along the four-lane exit road (Rheinische StraĂ&#x;e) to the west and the emblem of the Dortmunder U, there are new developments along the the Union Districts. These developments are catered for the artists and the creative community itself. The neighbourhood has been created as a structural change of vacancy and social inequalities. Therefore the intermediate space and programs develops as an opportunity to revitalize the neighbourhood. In this context, these developments are then considered as the acupoints to the city and acts a ripple effect throught the whole district.

The development of the site was produced by the new and highly visible anchor point of 2010 by an Urban Renewal Program ‘Stadtumbau West’ (Urban Redevelopment West) in regards to the management quarter, that is when Dortmunder U was opened as he art and creative centre. The link between culture and urbanity corresponds closely related to the development of participatory processes in urban space: a pulse generator in particular for creative minds. Meanwhile here numerous artists have settled with studios and galleries and cultural initiatives. The affordable housing in the area is needed especially for students. Targeted public support should continue to save the experimental spaces for culture providers and stakeholders of creative industries here.

SITE SELECTION

The site is situated right int he middle of an intersection of the existing points of programs on site. This plot of land is considered being the only vacant spot with a generous amount of area and is situated amongst diversed context. The spatial connection of this area is highly visible for pedestrian as well as vehicle. It is directly parallel to the main street, Lange Str. and situated at the periphery of the Unionviertel.

SITE

The site offers many opportunitie as there are several elements surrounding it thus giving depth to the whole landscape. The site acts as a central node as it sits in between two different residential area and wrapped in between a railway track. It is elevated thus giving potential of emphasizing the program that will be implemented on the site. There is also an industrial area towards the south of the site. This will then ensure that the whole design ties as a connectivity with the surrounding context.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The scheme is to develop a space that caters for the creative minds. Since the target users are artists, therefore a place to accommodate for their spaces acts as a focal point. Spaces are divided into three themes; Inspire, Interact and Iniative. A place for inspiration includes studios, workshops, classrooms and library. Spaces for interaction are communal spaces where users can interact and socialize. Spaces for initiative includes galleries, exhibition and other performance spaces in order to initiate the efforts produce by the ‘creative’ users. This is therefore addressed as an ‘acupuncture’ itself because it involves the mind, which accomodates for the entire body’s wellness.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Collage exploration

After develeping the scheme of program users and spatial sequence, I decided to develop the spaces into a collaging method. The spaces are taken from a series of existing floor plans, taken as a set of precedents. They are to ensure a thorough estimation of how I would envision the overall layout would be. The spaces were not overlayed randomly as there arranged in a default grid of 10000mm x 10000mm, in order to avoid complication of spatial arrangements.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Collage exploration

The collage floor plan were then montaged and also represented into a sectional perspective in order to have a clearer image of how the building will look like. However, designing these spaces seemed detached from the context of the site, therefore the spatial arrangements were then developed further.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Massing Strategies

Identifying the plot of the site, to ensure the boundaries and also influcence on the form of the building

Allowing maximum pemeability for pedestrians, as well as vehicle in terms of ciculation to access the building

Building was then divided into two blocks, allowing pedestrian to pass through

Each wing has one floor above, inclusice of services, therefore there is a bridge connecting the two.

The bridge not only act as a tie between the two wing, but also serve as an exhibition space as a purpse to highlight the program

Regeneration of space for the creative arts in Unionviertel.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT Access Strategies

Pedestrian Vehicle

Located in front of a main street and a two-way road, it is therefore a challenge to organise the access to the building. Therefore vehicular access are divided into two, and parking area is situated near the right wing.

Pedestrian access however, is visible and direct, as the scheme of the design emphasize on the walkability through the building.

These two wings are then tied together in between by the open walkway that acts as a circulation as well as serving as a space or plaza.
