VANITY : POSITIONS, UNDERSTANDING AND RESEARCH VACANCY STUDIES
ISSUE
EXPERIMENTS
by Jurgen Bay
These 3 main components are the main aspect that the book highlights towards designing a ‘strategic’ intervention.
'Vacancy Studies' provides the world of architecture with an optimistic perspective on the temporary reuse of vacancy. Bunkers, forts, churches, castles, hospitals, water-towers, post offices, prisons, palaces and airports are vacant. According to RAAAF (Rietveld Architecture-Art- Affordances) these public and government buildings offer enormous potential, the extent of which was visualised by their 'Vacant NL' installation at the 2010 The Issues raised need to be taken into all seriousness as it could be the cause of the vacant building hence suggeting suitable ideas leading towards experiments. In this case, Jurgen Bay talks about how solutions are a resultance of time based from the experimentations.

During the 19th Century, only men are depicted into dominating public spaces besides women. Since the arrival of capitalism, spaces are tweaked in such way that it is mutated towards having woment to be comfortable to be in. This is looked as a ‘surgery’ of a space in the post-modern era.

A new formula for a more effective eyebrow pencil was developed and used to create the thin, elegant brow of Hollywood's heyday.
Second-wave feminism hit and women began breaking free from the constraints of femininity. Believing that make-up sexualised and objectified women, many gave up their beauty regimes in favour of the natural look. With men returning from war and the resulting baby boom, all emphasis was on family life. Women came back from work and resigned to life as housewives. With so much time on their hands, they spent a lot of time pampering themselves to look glamorous.

Financial forecasts predicted an 8.5% growth in the beauty industry in 2014 and this rise is expected to continue in 2015, thanks in part to newly emerging markets such as men's grooming and anti-ageing.

Beauty: Towards a Postmodern Design The word ‘beauty’ itself comes in various subjective forms; namely, in every work of art. The lust of beauty in the modern day has manifested itself as a stagnation of a singular perspective towards perfection. However cosmetic surgery in architecture is viewed somewhat similar to how our own bodies ‘live’ and react towards the changes that have been made. In this case, these changes in space are perceived as ‘mutations’ of space.
“while white male bodies may struggle to develop cognitive maps of such postmodern spaces, the bodies of women and Others have never had recourse to objective mapping and are therefore more ‘at home’ from the start in these enviroscapes -- bodies altered using cosmetic surgery aesthetically mirror postmodern architecture and simultaneously help to create subjects that belong inside quintessentially postmodern environments,“ (Meredith Jones, Architecture of the body: cosmetic surgery and postmodern space, 2002: 2) The project in addition, challenged the absurd amount of demands of beauty industry. Due to the market growth of the industry the site context, it also demands not just in the market but also as a social demand. This project will aim to continue the potential of the site to ‘live’ beyond its attraction on only a certain group of users of different kind – since it shall also provide an authentic experience of the abandoned by new mutation of spaces and technology. The Architecture of Surgery is concerned with a gritty, strong and industrially constructed, together with an exact opposite of nature, which stitched architecture. The past of the building is revealed through maintaining the structure, facades and circulation, mostly. The building’s overall program is similar to the same manner in the past, the Albert Warehouse had many purposes as a building (mainly production-wise goods) and also serve to produce. The architecture is not anymore a singularity of an object but rather a multiplicity of individual components, both acts as a self-altering spaces; be it from dressing the body to maintaining the wellbeing of a body. The performance of having several events relating towards fashion, dermatology and cosmetic are a part of the existence of such demands in Manchester itself. The intend of the project concentrates on exhibiting the sterile and polished space, within a historical and abandoned space and how it is interpreted through a contrasting contextual post-modernity of space. This architectural expression thus proposes an alternative method to create awareness on how perfection is strived through a made-believe character that exists only in an enclosed space – but evolves to a different identity (space) when one realizes it. In a sociological aspect, the past and the current had taught our society towards having a certain angle on beauty and perfection. In the context, to utilize the industry for architecture that can addresses awareness is something that considers architecture in many different levels – spatially, technologically, and most importantly a significant consequence for future generations towards perceiving perfection as something artificial.

MATERIAL & TIME LIMITS
endless form -chamfered edges Pod sunken in to the ground floor area thus creates a space of ignorance
This warehouse minimizes its need of solid space and the materials have different terms. Concretes are the most durable, and the next is bricks, followed by timber. The warehouse will gradually deteriorate when the vanity warehouse no longer serves its purpose. Other spaces will be ruined and turned into a decayed building

Therefore, the lower floor which is the Ground floor is left empty, leaving all the elements of the building remains as it is.

Modelmaking Material experimentation
Process experimentation Wax and plaster is used in order to achieve suitable texture and effect for the material itself. Plaster for finishes and texture, whereas was is for translucency effects
Methods experimentation
AIR DRY CLAY It is used to mould the pod as it is easily shaped to have the chamfered edges. However this material happens to be heavy and brittle, resulting it to be
heavy and impracticle to support. Furthermore the to achieve a sleek design texture will not be achieved using this material
PLASTER & FABRIC Wax was then used to shape the pod using wire mesh as a form-moulder and also to bond the material together Result: The structuture was somehow sturdy but really hard to work with, hardens quickly therefore resulting to crack
Application of this material is faily easy to work with, however time measures is quite consuming as the end result seem imperfect Cardboard & Spray Using the cutting on reversed sides method, chamfered egdes were close to the chamfered edges effect, but not close enough.
Modelmaking Finalized methods
Wooden blocks were cut, shaped and sanded to create a negative space for the model form itself. This method is to create the shape wanted using various materials Using the Plastic Vacuum Former, The desired shaped were achieved flawlessly. Due to size constraints, the pod was divided into two. Next, The materials were sprayed in order to achive the “concrete texture
Undestanding Approaches Through Sectional View
A sectional perspective highlights the some of elements and programs instilled into the pod. It also creates a realization of space where abandonament is present, due to the chasing of perfection.
