In 2005, Atkins was hired to provide full landscape architectural design services for the development of Falcon’s Nest, an exclusive resort condominium development, located on a pristine and steep hilltop site overlooking the Caribbean Sea on Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands. Falcon’s Nest covers nearly 1.5 acres and is comprised of three resort-style residences with a main house of approximately 5000 s.f., and two ancillary residences, approximately 1800 s.f. each. Atkins developed a tropical site plan concept with the focal point of a 1900 s.f. lagoon style pool. The site plan also included two spas, a 28’ diameter thatched roof tiki hut over the swim-up bar, outdoor stone terraces, a heavy timber and metal ornamental entrance gate, a timber arbor covered walk connecting the villas, specialty paving, sculptural art pieces, comprehensive site lighting scheme, rustic planters and lush tropical landscaping. Additionally, a large and nearly vertical gunite wall existed on site to prevent hillside erosion. Atkins developed a concept to paint and sculpt the wall to resemble natural rock outcroppings that imitate native stone found throughout the island to further enhance the tropical theme. Three levels of themed treatment were defined to provide the most visual impact where needed.
