Master Planning
The master planning process is one of creating a blueprint for explaining the design and building an area, whether it is a small community park or a substantial new development. The master plan framework will identify land uses and is a vital tool in determining the social, economic and physical requirements of the area. It identifies the specific types, sizes, quantities and locations of all structures (walls, fences, arbors), hardscapes (courts, walks), and plants (trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers).
Landscape Planning
As cities across Asia continue to expand, the need for strategic planning and management of the wider landscape is starting to become an important priority for both government and large scale developers. Landscape Planning looks to quantify and assess landscape in terms of natural resources, land use, ecological process and landscape character. This knowledge provides us with the sound basis for creating plans to protect, enhance and develop the landscape and its natural resources over time.
2
Public Spaces and Urban Design
Public Spaces define our cities and towns and provide a sense of identity and community. A well designed civic space offers a cultural display centre, a community focal point, a vibrant commercial arena and a place of respite, as well as ensuring the arterial transport routes of a city are not clogged.
Hotel and Resort Design
Hotel and Resorts are one of the fastest growing industries in the Asia Pacific Region. Atkins is experienced in providing a diverse range of landscaping services to a number of different hotels & resort opportunities, from short-stay pleasure parks and recreational attractions to landscaping some of the regions leading 5* hotels and residential resorts.

Design Guides
Streetscape design is the attractive design and clever placement of all streetscape materials including pavement, lighting, furniture (bollards, barriers, signage) and can also extend to the management of retail facades. A coherent streetscape is noticeably and at times subconsciously influential in the enjoyment of an area as well as the spending patterns of pedestrians.
Atkins recognises and encourages proactive community engagement especially during the preliminary stages of landscape development. When designing for a community it is important that existing characteristics, including areas of appreciation and discontent, opportunities and cultural aspirations are taken into consideration. The landscape and urban design of an area will influence the lifestyle and behaviour of a population.
A number of different climates and environmental habitats exist within the Asia Pacific Region and our team of Landscape Architects are experts in ensuring the horticulture and biodiversity balance of environments are maintained. When necessary and for thorough scientific evaluation we collaborate with our network of environmental specialists.
Coastal fronts and riversides provide communities with unique areas where urban dwellers can interact with nature. It is important for cities and towns fortunate enough to be have a waterfront to capitalise on the social cultural and aesthetic advantages. Invariably coastal and riverfronts display a unique ecosystem and the Atkins’ landscape team ensures that in developing a community vicinity the environmental needs are not compromised.
Parks and playgrounds are a vital element of community and environmental wellbeing. Atkins landscape has an awardwinning history of designing open spaces and playgrounds from local pocket parks to large national parks. Atkins’ landscape team will also work closely with Atkins’ architects team to ensure landscaping of schools is conducive to learning and stimulating games and play.
A Design Guide is a publication used as a reference to improve both functionally and visually local standards of design, and is applicable to a range of uses, such as residential developments, house extensions, shop fronts, disabled access, advertisements and conservation areas.

IFLA ASIA-PAC Awards 2019 Analysis & Master planning Award of Excellence
A sensitive landscape planning methodology has been adopted to outline the project boundaries and to conceptualize the Master Plan. This compromises site observations, topographical and hydrological studies, terrain mapping of GIS data and landscape assessments. The majority of the site accommodates a diverse native landscape typically known for its rich ecology of fauna and flora. This diverse native landscape typology is stretched far beyond the project boundaries linked with the regions vulcanic landscapes. The design of the Concept Master Plan has been guided by a desire to accommodate human use of the land with its inherent natural processes and natural history. The Concept plan proposes a large fully integrated golf resort with casino built according to international standards that still maintains the majority of existing landforms and nature.
Storm water catchment, water falling on roofs of villas can be redirected into the project wide water system and reused.
The HANLUX Lifestyle Resort Master Plan Development is designed with the close collaboration of professional Golf Course Architects. The golf course design ensures an efficient golf routing while a sensitive landscape planning approach by Atkins promotes the ecosystem as an integral component of the land use planning throughout the whole development. As a model for sustainability and eco-tourism, the HANLUX Lifestyle Resort Master Plan is sensitively integrated with the preservation of existing waterways and clearly defined by its hillside reserves. The development is thereby tethered to the ecosystem of Clark and linked into regional awareness and strong environmental stewardship.
6
The integrated bio swales system can function as a large water basin. The water in the basin can be reused within the project, this may be for irrigation purposes.
Water from the integrated bio swales system can be reused to irrigate the green and fairways of the golf course. The water which will flow through the green and fairways will be polluted with heavily used nitrates and fertilizers. Riperian plants from the bio swale system will clean the water, making it reusable again.
The club house will be connected with the integrated bio swales. Water can be reused to feed the fountains, washing golf carts or flushing toilets.

The landscape design team in Hong Kong aims to develop an eco-themed living environment through the integration of an interconnected Blue and Green system which will not only address various infrastructural needs but will also provide abundant opportunities for recreation and educational aspects. The current water levels of the site will need to be maintained in order to limit the impact on the adjacent wetland’s ground water level. The interconnected blue system has therefore been introduced within the open space framework which shall facilitate operations and will be accessible through various themed trails. This landscape planning approach utilizes nature as a cost efficient system to replace various infrastructural needs such as concreted channels and pipes wherever possible. Buffer zones or riparian areas will allow for water infiltration and limit run off from site. A network of ponds and vegetated swales will not only facilitate storm water management but it will also have the capacity to clean water and provides habitats for various species. The landscape design proposal for Gamuda Cove master plan embraces the site’s natural environment and complex ecosystem, and strengthens the project’s image as a unique and world class development which shall become a new benchmark for residential development of such type.

The Pantai Mutiara development scheme in Jakarta is a privately funded project comprising a mixeduse residential hotel and leisure complex. The development area is located on a reclaimed island off the Jakarta coastline. Our role was to create a landscape master plan for the entire development area. The concept for the development is simple but dynamic with the proposed towers creating a cluster of sails. This nautical theme is continued in the landscape with the towers being orientated around a compass feature, designed to be visible from land, sea and air. The compass points alternately comprised hard and soft landscape, with the rich colours of the granite paving contrasting with the lush green of the planting. Each point provides residential space including swimming pools, paved forums and colourful gardens. The central water park is a Paradise Island with wave machine, water slides and lazy river winding its way through temple ruins, grottos, giant lizards and a fisherman’s cove, in a rich planted setting.

The Ba Son Development, named Grand Marina, is located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City besides The Saigon Botanical and Zoological Gardens. This prime location in the CBD of HCMC has a rich legacy and strategically located along the waterfront and adjacent to the Botanical garden. These gardens have been established by the wellrenowned botanist Mr. Jean Baptiste Louis Pierre in 1865. Mr. Pierre is probably best remembered for creating and mapping Saigon’s overall open space framework, therefore also called “The father of Saigon’s Greenbelt”. This rich and mature network of parks and boulevards is characterised by its symmetric grid that extends towards the Saigon riverbanks, embracing the Ba Son project site, formerly known for its shipyard legacy. The project aims to extend the botanical richness of Saigon’s open spaces, while traditional landscape design principles associated with the French landscape gardens are adopted. A sensitive selection of trees is planted on a symmetric grid to articulate and extend view lines. This results in a particular design language that matches the project’s grandeur and uniqueness, reinforcing the permanent identity of the site. The site is also known as a former shipyard , as ship making used to be one of the main industries along the District one waterfront. A profound research has been done to identify workmanship, materials and details associated with the particular ships and associated industrial activities. The landscape design in both public and private areas makes reference to the ship making legacy through integration of customised features and materials. This results into a particular project identity and enhances the placemaking of the unique public realm within the HCMC’s prime waterfront site.

Adliya Urban Regeneration Public Spaces and Urban Design
Location: Client: Scale: Status:
Manama, Bahrain Bahrain Ministry of Municipality and Rural Affairs 6,963 sqm Completed
The Adliya area of Bahrain has long been recognised as a key leisure hub in the Kingdom, with its unique mix of cafes, art galleries, hotels and top quality restaurants, thriving in a setting of busy back streets. It now boasts a newly regenerated centre which has changed its nature from traffic dominated bustle to a calm paved, planted and landscaped area which unusually for the Middle East - welcomes pedestrians and allows them to enjoy the surroundings. In 2008, the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture commissioned Atkins to design a new streetscape for the area, pedestrianising some roads, providing more footpaths and landscaping in others thus regenerating the block into an ‘avant garde’ cultural and recreational leisure destination. While the primary aim of the design was to change the aspect of the area, the team also had to consider changes to the traffic circulation, road safety and lighting, road drainage, relocation of utility services, and provision of new irrigation supplies for the newly planted areas.
54
Taking advantage of the fact that quality restaurants can exist beyond the confines of hotels, the new Block 338 emphasises its alfresco nature with its uniquely landscaped common areas and walkways. The first phase of improvements has completely revamped the look of the once cluttered district. With the addition of clear safe night lights, the widening of pedestrian areas, inclusion of modern benches, landscaped fountains, multi- coloured LED lamp designs in the floor, and patterned brickwork, the area already is one of Bahrain’s most picturesque. The changes have been welcomed by the public, restaurant owners and Ministry alike. Phase 2 is already being planned by Atkins and the Ministry is looking additionally to institute certain building and planning restrictions and improved peripheral parking in the district to accompany the new pedestrianoriented streetscapes.
55
With cafes, art galleries, boutique hotels, and top quality restaurants, the entertainment quarter will be a magnet for a vibrant urban community in the heart of Manama.

London, UK English Partnerships Completed
Greenwich Peninsula, formerly Europe’s largest town gasworks, is the single largest brown field development site in London and of major strategic importance. Over the past ten years we have provided the complete spectrum of specialist consultancy beginning with assessment and remediation of ground contamination. We have also been prime consultants with responsibility for procurement and project management, including design and implementation of new infrastructure, landscaping and riverside reconstruction across the whole 120 hectare site. Parks have been designed to create a natural forested area where buildings and urban space appear to be carved out of their setting. Two central elements of the Southern Park are an ecology park, created around two lakes and the village green at the heart of the Millennium Village. Many of the concepts and methods we developed have been promoted as best practice by the Environment Agency in their document ‘Partnership in Planning - Riverbank Design Guidance for the Tidal Thames’.

As part of the Mini Holland investment in cycling infrastructure in the outer London Boroughs, the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames commissioned Atkins to deliver a 1.6km two way segregated cycle track along Portsmouth Road with public realm access improvements to the adjoining and parallel Queens Promenade riverfront. The brief called on Atkins to deliver on the Mayor’s and TfLs manifesto to deliver healthy streets for all and to connect Portsmouth Road into the wider network of proposed and existing cycle routes across the borough. Portsmouth Road runs parallel to the River Thames and was a wide vehicle dominated route into central Kingston that segregates surrounding residential areas and Kingston university from Riverside Conservation Area of Queens Promenade fronting onto the River Thames. The Queens Promenade runs parallel to and below the street level of Portsmouth Road and had poor access, high maintenance planting, dilapidated seating, failing walls, cracked footways and no focal points or celebration of the rich history of the promenade. This landmark project was successfully delivered and officially opened on the 17th April 2017 by Val Shawcross the Vice Mayor of London (at the time).

Broomielaw Public Realm Public Spaces and Urban Design
Location: Client: Status:
Glasgow, UK Confidential Completed
The design for Broomielaw and Tradeston contributes to improving the environmental quality of the riverside, providing functional open space that can accommodate a variety of uses. Since its completion the project has seen a diverse range of users from cyclists and pedestrians taking advantage of the traffic free linear spaces to people exercising, socialising and generally making use of previously undervalued and inaccessible waterfront. Whilst these benefits are not immediately measurable, the social benefits are clearly evident and consequently contribute to an improvement in a wider social wellbeing. More immediately measurable benefits include the introduction of nearly 300 box headed limes, a significant contribution to the ‘greening’ of the city. Natural stone materials have been specified to provide long-term durability whilst their units size and floorscape detailing has specifically sought to be structurally robust to allow unrestricted loading minimising both maintenance and management liabilities. The scheme provides spaces for future economic intervention. Already a coffee kiosk has been introduced providing facilities to the passing footfall. Whilst relatively small these interventions support a diversification of retail and trade from the core city centre to its waterfront. Again furniture is simple and robust. Painted surfaces have been avoided in favour of galvanised, stainless steel and stone finishes. These material choices reduce long-term maintenance regimes but also provide a clear honest expression of function.

Skissuppdrag Nobeltorget Public Spaces and Urban Design
Location: Client:
Malmö , Sweden City of Malmö
Atkins was one of three companies to be invited by the City of Malmö to participate in a design competition on the centrally located “Nobeltorget” in Malmö. The assignment involved the design of the whole square as well as a planned tramway-stop. The intention was to turn the future Nobeltorget in to a meeting place and landmark. The design is supposed to reduce the barrier effects of the streets Nobelvägen, Amiralsgatan and Lantmannavägen by being an attractive and well defined urban space. In our proposal, we want to strengthen its historical and contextual aspects, and turn it into a pleasant place both for visitors and people passing by. The edge will be a natural way for people to orientate and defines the square surface and layout. The edge will be turned into a zone filled with different activities. But also for rest, water and green vegetation. The proposal also puts weight on a free flow of people. On the south side of the square lies the “folkets hus”, a building built for the socialist and workers movement in Sweden. Our suggestion is to integrate this historical context into the design of the square´s southern part by keeping the old sculpture “hommage a Axel Danielsson” and write down names of workers movement leaders as imprints in the concrete. Our proposal was praised in the evaluation by the city of Malmö and our design was considered the most suitable for the square. This led them to decide that they wanted us to continue our work. The square is currently under construction with the intention of building the new square in 2013-14.

Location: Client: Status:
Ireland Confidential Completed
Belfast, a city rich in historical and cultural diversity, is undergoing a historic programme of transformation. The project, Belfast Streets Ahead (BSA), is already delivering real benefits, with new businesses and tenants choosing to invest in the city. Much of the project area falls within Belfast’s designated conservation area. BSA seeks to deliver a responsive and contemporary environment, looking to the future whilst being respectful of the past. It aims to create sustainable spaces, seeking the right balance to deliver a visually appealing and stimulating city, whilst being capable of accommodating the many associated city management activities together with planned and impromptu events and celebrations. This requires flexibility which is inherent in the designs. The spaces themselves are simple and clutter free providing ease of movement. Sustainability is key. The overall composition of the principal paving surfaces have been considered, examining options for construction methods which best address the performance requirements and particular site conditions. A unique challenge for sustainability was the presence of an existing and extensive concrete subbase road slab. The slab was examined to determine what could be retained and re-used thus reducing excavation requirements. This proactive approach to sustainability has already been recognised with a Ceequal Excellent Rating for the Outline Design Stage. The durability, maintenance and management requirements of all specifications have been embedded into the design process. This holistic approach delivers well considered, robust and sustainable public realm improvements that will last and benefit today’s users and future generations to come.

TRX Public Realm and Streetscape Public Spaces and Urban Design
Location: Client: Status:
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Tun Razak Exchange Competition
The proposed design for the TRX public realm and streetscape is heavily contoured and draws inspiration from the Malaysian cultural landscapes, such as abundant rice fields and mountainous regions. These contours flow seamlessly through the different levels of the outdoor spaces and may well extend into the interior spaces such as the mall arcades, hotel and office lobby’s, enabling guests to have diverse experiences at almost any level from various angles. This conceptual Landscape approach will complement and align with the massing and development typologies which are set forward by the master planner and project architect. Innovative design principles are explored to meet project objectives and a problem solving approach has been adopted to turn design constraints into design opportunities. Opportunities for a sustainable approach and introduction of various green building principles are considered. The central park encourages biodiversity through the provision of densely vegetated terraces, green walls and large canopy trees. Such landscape invites a wealth of neighbouring insects and birds into the various themed garden landscapes. On the roof, rainwater is collected and used to supply nutrients to the diverse greening palette. Cooperative water management system of canals and weirs are well integrated within traditional cultural landscapes. The man-made landscape at TRX makes reference to such systems which are also know to reflect the philosophical concept of bringing together the realms of the spirit, the human world and nature. A creative and diverse water system is integrated throughout all zones of the podium park. The overall water system compromises a diverse chain of events which flows through the different levels of the park. Active water events such as 8m tall waterfalls will create a dramatic experience and break the sound of the surrounding urban traffic. Interactive water features adopt light and water events which provide additional cooling and leisure. Innovative light features will be dynamic and interactive through the use of touch screens or apps which can be downloaded on the developments website. The overall design aims to create an exemplar destination which will cater for residence and visitors of the mixed use development, strengthening the project’s image as a unique and world class development. A world class landscape with various innovative features would undoubtedly reflect well on the project and would also establish an image for the overall development.

The Landscape design for Asia Aerospace city aims to reinforce the strong physical identity of the project seen from the air. The linear patterns in the landscape symbolize wind streams derived from aviation models. A sensitive open space design has been achieved by using several solar and wind simulations throughout the design process to enhance the comfort and quality of spaces. Spaces with less solar access hours can be used for outdoor activity area to avoid overheating. The solar access hours also indicate the appropriate locations for vegetation and water features. Some species require more sunshine but some require less. The study helps the designer to identify most suitable location for different species so as to guarantee their healthy growth and eliminate cost for replacement.

Tencent Wuhan R&D Centre Project Institutional
Location: Client: Scale: Status:
China Tencent 56,000 sqm Concept Design competition
The landscape design responds directly to the usage and people movement on the site. The green corridors traverse the site from North to South, ranging from grass to farming plants. These green paths are combined with stone-plates that invite people to walk along the waterfront promenades and they bridge the areas of staff drop-off and the VIP entrance area in the front of the site. The drop-off zones are organised on the West and East side of the site. Both entrances share a grand lobby area, reaching from west to east, enriched with a wide sculptural staircase. Water channels that enter the site are combined with green corridors and wooden pathways into the lake. A wooden waterfront promenade draws a transversal circulation along the site “sawing” the water corridors. These water features and trees contribute to reduce wind speed, and temperature, and thus improve the micro climate around the site. The green corridors are semiprivate spaces for both employees and visitors, used for recreation and relaxation as part of the amenities and first floor.

The unique location of the site has triggered a landscape concept that is based on a blue system: A series of surface-water and rain-water collectors are connected through a series of vegetated swales. They will conduct the water through a series of retention ponds and sedimentation ponds. Clean water will be returned to the lake, improving the current water quality. The development‘s cooling system, a closed loop aquifer system is part of the blue system by using the lake water as a heat exchange device. The adequate water body of the lake makes this an efficient, sustainable and low cost option. The blue system strategy implies the re-use of water for landscape irrigation. A different and unique habitat is created at each of the stages in it. Riparian areas correspond to the first stages, 100% unpurified waters, whereas lillium and nympheas grow in the cleaner ponds. A micro habitat of different species appears in the swales, depending on the seasonal amount of water. The water related landscape is also applied on a bigger scale to the architectural volumes, with an amphibious landscape scheme that would allow temporary flooding of defined parts of the site.

Bank Of China Headquarters Institutional
Location: Client: Scale: Status:

The Landscape concept is following the theme of a north-south grain running through the site with the analogy of geological formations on which the building is supported. The grain is emphasized by the paving patterns, walls, steps and water features. Elements within the landscape which by necessity are required to cross the grain are designed to have transparent or minimal visual impact, such as glass balustrades and terracing planes falling away from the eye avoiding visual obstruction.
114
Water and feature walls as two major features dominate the site landscape: water as a linking element throughout the site and having a primary sensory role and representing well-being, prosperity and lift; feature walls create a sense of place, emphasis the geological grain running through the site, interact with level changes and represent stability, longevity and strength.
Arcapita Headquarters Institutional
Location: Client: Scale: Status:
Manama Bahrain Arcapita Bank 43,000 sqm Completed
The eight storey Arcapita Headquarters building is one of two flagship structures to be constructed on the reclaimed Bahrain Bay landmass. The landscape component covers both internal and external planting from concept through to detailed design. The proposal is unique in the Middle East as the building is based around a steel framed structure that hangs from the roof rather than supported from the ground. Two concrete cores are founded on a traditional raft and pile foundation and across the top of these cores span substantial roof trusses from which all the offices will hang. Complementing the modern and minimalist look of the architecture and interiors, the planting design both reinforces the architecture design as well as showcases exotics not usually found in the region. The planting scheme is driven by environmental needs, which strengthen the identity and integrity of the design. Due to the orientation of the building, the lighting requirements for the proposed planting palettes play a key role in the development of the concept design. There is a distinct difference in the lighting conditions of the buildings interiors, where planting on the eastern elevation will be subject to sunny conditions, whilst those on the western façade will be in shady conditions for most of the day. As such, design considerations and maintenance regimes are critical to the success of the plant growth stages. The species selected have been chosen for their growth culture as well as their water and maintenance requirements. The play on differing heights is another key design element. The sizes, forms and locations of the proposed species are used to highlight and dramatise the height and volume of internal spaces. The arrangement of each element – both hard and soft – is carefully balanced for one to fully appreciate individual character as well as to create a playful rhythm. A predominantly green colour palette enhances this character, while subtle tonal and textural variations complement forms and colours in the surroundings.

Our Approach The team’s experience has developed whilst continuously aiming to safeguard an integrated design for environmental stewardship and development. A holistic a design methodology is adopted to create places that are distinctive, attractive commercially, socially and environmentally. Our projects are planned and designed with careful regard to both the ecology and the character of the landscape. Designing with nature requires a full understanding of the sites morphology and its systems. Practical planning and design techniques are adopted to facilitate this process and enables us to interact with clients, engineers and designers at each stage of the design process. Such a sensitive design approach benefits the quality of our living environment and creates a strong sense of place and identity.
VR Technology Data Mapping
3D Printing
146
Virtual Reality in the Landscape Design Process Virtual reality (VR) is adopted during the design process to visualize the constraints on the existing conditions and to evaluate the proposed design options. Using a virtual environment, the team can not only render the resulting structure in 3D but also experience them as they would in the real world.
Developing projects in a virtual environment creates the ability to test a number of factors efficiently. The technology enables the client and designer to assess the design within their current context. The relationship of the landscape with its surrounding buildings is assessed by understanding the scale and ambiance of spaces.
When necessary, design amendments are developed within the Virtual space by adjusting the proposed landscape solutions or integrating mitigation measures.
147
3D Printing in the Landscape Design Process 3D printed models have become extremely valuable as a design tool throughout the study of our landscape planning projects. By seeing the spaces in true three dimensions, issues with elevations, focal points, movement, scale and proportion become far more apparent than on a flat screen or printed page.
148
3D Printing technologies facilitates communication with clients and stakeholders about their ideas in a more compelling way. Physical models will not only clarify the details of the site area but also become a conversation pieces that you can eye with anticipation as the project comes to fruition.
3D printed models can also demonstrate the value of an iterative design process through printing various options and showcasing evolvements of an object’s design.
Landscape Planning through Data Mapping In our layered design approach, we see the landscape as a system of layers that interact. The team analyses landscapeforming forces and processes, such as soil formation, hydrology, natural dynamics, infrastructure development and occupation, and takes them on board as the starting point for the plan. Information collected during a visual appraisal on site will be complement the site’s data. Environmental considerations such as water setback areas or habitat conservation zones are overlaid in order to identify the most sensitive zones of the development. This approach invites us to review the impact of a development on every social, physical and biological aspect of the environment. Key landscape aspects and structures are being made visible and underlying relationships are being clarified. With respect for these layers, we try to translate the client’s requests into a new layer that fits in it’s place, is timeless and is not determined by the issues of the day. The quality of the design derives from the logic of the layers of the landscape and the way in which people respond to it. In this process our team is constantly looking for multi-layered solutions and opportunities that plans feasible or more valuable.
