THE MICHELIN GUIDE ARRIVES IN ATLANTA
The first MICHELIN Guide Atlanta selection, featuring world-class restaurants in the metro Atlanta area, will be revealed in the fall, giving food and travel enthusiasts a lot more to discover in Atlanta.
Atlanta is a city full of culinary experiences that range from fine dining to casual eating. The diverse culture of the city plays a key part in its vibrant gastronomy, and now the world gets to see it.
“Atlanta’s culinary scene is rich in diversity and constantly evolving but has long been one of the most underappreciated assets in our city,” said William Pate, president and CEO of Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We are proud of the recognition the MICHELIN Guide will bring to our destination as it highlights our local chefs and cuisine.”
The famously anonymous MICHELIN Guide inspectors are already in the field, eating their way through metro Atlanta. They each make their own dining reservations secretively and pay for all their meals. It is a standard for the MICHELIN Guide to ensure that inspectors are being treated the same way as any other customer. Inspectors visit each restaurant more than once and on different days and times of the week.
MICHELIN Stars are awarded to restaurants offering outstanding cooking, following Michelin’s historical methodology based on five universal criteria: the quality of the ingredients, the harmony of flavors, the mastery of cooking techniques, the voice and personality of the chef as expressed through the cuisine and the consistency across the entire menu and over time.
MICHELIN Guide inspectors will be considering Atlanta’s restaurants for the iconic MICHELIN Stars, the Bib Gourmand distinction and the MICHELIN Green Star. The MICHELIN Stars — one, two or three — are awarded to unparalleled cuisine; the Bib Gourmand is given to restaurants that offer great quality food at good prices;
the MICHELIN Green Star is awarded to restaurants that are leaders in sustainable gastronomy. Along with that, inspectors will also highlight Recommended restaurants and special professional awards.
The MICHELIN Guide was first published in France at the turn of the 20th century to encourage tire sales by giving practical advice on places for French motorists to explore. The guide came to North America in 2005. It has become a reliable companion for any traveler seeking a great meal. The MICHELIN Guide is constantly observing the evolution of culinary destinations around the world, and now we are honored to have it in Atlanta.

BY DANIELA CINTRON

BY LUZ CASTILLO

ULTIMATE GUIDE TO EXPLORING ATLANTA AS THE CAPITAL OF HIP-HOP
Atlanta has been recognized as one of the most creative cities in the country and as the capital of hip-hop. With thousands of artists and musicians, and more than 100 music festivals each year, Atlanta has earned a place at the top of the industry.
BY DANIELA CINTRON
As we celebrate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, it’s interesting to learn about the tremendous impact Atlanta has had on the genre.
Hip-hop icons such as OutKast, T.I., TLC, 21 Savage, Ludacris, Gucci Mane and Lil Jon have come from Atlanta. While the focus is on the artists, great producers have also been the drivers of this explosion.
On the streets of Atlanta, you can live and feel the rich culture of hip-hop, which has become much more than just a genre of music. Hip-hop has a huge influence on everyday urban life.
SHOPPING WHERE THE HISTORY OF HIP-HOP UNRAVELS
Experience this culture by visiting places like Walter’s, the clothing and
shoe store in Downtown that has been mentioned in several hip-hop songs and where you can buy trendy Jordans next to hip-hop icons.
Lenox Square in Buckhead is a landmark where Antwan and André 3000 would meet up before creating OutKast and where T.I. started handing out flyers and copies of his early mixtapes. In addition to being an iconic venue, it has been mentioned in several songs by artists such as Nicki Minaj, Drake, T.I., Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy. It has been an important platform for hiphop, holding promotional and meet-andgreet events. Have your camera ready because you never know what hip-hop celebrity you’ll run into there.
A TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC DUO
Head over to the eclectic neighborhood of Little Five Points and visit the mural that pays tribute to Atlanta’s beloved duo, “André 3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton. The black and white mural of OutKast was created by street artist JEKS, in collaboration with WISH — the store next door — and the Outer
Space Project in Atlanta. The inspiration for the very-popular mural came from a picture of the duo taken by hip-hop artist photographer Jonathan Mannion.
THE PLACE TO BE ON WHEELS ON A SUNDAY NIGHT
Take a ride just outside the Westside and visit Cascade Family Skating Rink. This family skating rink was instrumental in the growth of hip-hop during the 1980s and 1990s. Roller skating is iconic to Atlanta, and this rink has seen some of hip-hop’s biggest artists such as TLC and Jermaine Dupri take turns during their rise in the industry. In 2006, the rink caught even more attention after being featured in the comedy-drama film “ATL,” starring Atlanta’s own T.I. and Big Boi. Even Usher has been spotted here, on wheels.
T.I.’S TRAP MUSIC MUSEUM
Your visit to Atlanta is not complete without a tour of the Trap Music Museum, also known as the Pink Trap House. With a facade that resembles the pink house from the cover of 2Chainz’s album “Pretty Girls Like Trap,” this museum is a monument created by T.I. to commemorate the trap music movement and hip-hop culture in Atlanta. This subgenre of hip-hop originated here in Atlanta and is now a worldwide phenomenon.

HIP-HOP IS LIFE IN ATLANTA
Atlanta has been hip-hop’s center of gravity for years. And, hip-hop has become central to Atlanta in return. Make hip-hop part of your everyday aesthetic with a shopping journey that will change your style forever. Forever. Ever.
BY RACHEL GRINER
Hip-Hop Fashion
When did hip-hop fall in love with fashion? In Atlanta, it could be argued, it began with sneakers.
Walter’s is the famous sneaker shop seen in the video for “Welcome to
Atlanta” by Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris. A pillar of the community since 1952, the store is mentioned in numerous songs, and shoppers still delight in “hot red” FILA sneakers, Vans and Converse.
In Little Five Points, Wish Atlanta is situated across the street from The Outer Space Project’s OutKast mural. The store caters to urban-style elites with soughtafter releases like Adidas by Stella McCartney, Puma x June Ambrose and Jacquemus x NIKE.
Collectors know Atlanta regularly hosts sneaker conventions. Keep an eye out for local entrepreneur Jarrian Smith of Heetfayafeet. A specialty reseller, the outfit offers unique finds like the coveted NIKE SB x Jarritos.
The name says it all at Luxury Box ATL,
located next to Dior in Buckhead Village. The sneakers here are investments – from four-figure NIKE Air Jordans to Rick Owens and luxury brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prada.
More sneaker stores by neighborhood:
• Request Boutique at Perimeter Mall
• NIKE Atlanta at Lenox Square
• A Ma Maniere in West Midtown
• Social Status in Inman Park

course, “ATL Hip-Hop Innovators,” that examines hip-hop through the lens of design and innovation.
Books: Freshen up the bookshelf with “Hip-Hop Architecture,” by Sekou Cooke, which examines urban environments and buildings that embody the creative energy of hip-hop. There’s also “O is for Old School” and other children’s books.
Prints: Brighten the walls with a Visual Compendium of Sneakers, Taxonomy of Rap Names or the Atlanta Rap Map – a colorful visualization of the city that shows all the places in Atlanta mentioned in rap music.
Gifts: Sprinkle homages to hip-hop throughout your space with a model turntable kit, an all-white sneaker candle or teacups boldly emblazoned with “hip-hop.”
Hip-Hop Artwork
Graffiti is one of the original elements of hip-hop. And, ABV Gallery was founded by Atlanta-based artist Greg Mike who got his start in the highly stylized craft. In 2023, the contemporary art space will move to a new home in East Atlanta Village. Find a range of prints priced at less than $100 and original artworks by artists, including:
Aesek: His on-point lettering became part of the epic #jifrapchallenge when he tagged individual jars of peanut butter for the “Mumble Rap Starter Kits.”
Killamari: Growing up on graffiti and cartoons of the ‘80s and ‘90s, his work features bold patterns and cheeky characters that can be seen all around Atlanta.
Dr. Dax: A street artist that spreads messages of community and love was once a video producer for the Dungeon Family, the collective that birthed OutKast.
Cat Eye Creative is in the art enclave of Castleberry Hill. The gallery regularly shows graffiti that pushes the boundaries of art and inspires the next generation of artists.
“Graffiti is an essential art form,” says Adam Crawford, founder of Cat Eye Creative. “It’s passion-driven – people risking their freedom to create a piece of art for the public.”
Find art for sale by Atlanta’s own Vayne, whose graffiti is well-known but whose identity is a secret well-kept. While his pieces can sell for thousands of dollars indoors, outdoors they are free, iconic and sometimes illegal.
The Trap Music Museum has contemporary art displayed throughout (much of which is available for purchase).
One such work is DL Warfield’s “We Did It for Trap Music,” which puzzles together mug shots of T.I. and other big names.
It is a commentary on the circumstances faced by these musicians. Warfield is well known as a fine artist and the art director behind the legendary OutKast album covers for “Aquemini” and “ATLiens.”

September is the last full month of the regular season for the Braves, but there’s still plenty of opportunities to catch Ronald Acuña Jr. and the rest of the squad at Truist Park. Patterson and Drake London look to help bring Atlanta back to the top of football. The home schedule at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is sure to be an exciting one with teams like the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders all set to test the Falcons on Sundays in Atlanta. That’s not to mention the divisional rivalries with the likes of the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and especially with the New Orleans Saints. Even if you can’t make it to the incredible Downtown venue for some NFL Atlanta Falcons action or if you want to be with fellow fans when the Falcons are out of town, Bud Light has partnered with plenty of bars across town (such as Big Sky in Buckhead and The Nook on Piedmont Park) to provide a lively atmosphere for every football Sunday. www.atlantafalcons.com

Hawks basketball is upon us. While the Hawks will always have a primary goal of making it to the playoffs and going as far as they can, the NBA has also instituted a new in-season tournament for teams to go after as well. With $500,000 in cash for each winning team member on the line, this could provide even more exciting regular season games at State Farm Arena. Led by new head coach Brent Key, the Yellow Jackets will get their season going on Sept. 1 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Aflac Kickoff Game against the Louisville Cardinals. Tech has six games scheduled at historic Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field this season, including three ACC games and the annual heated rivalry game against the back-to-back National Champions Georgia Bulldogs. The rivalry game also coincides with the annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive, so make sure to bring a toy to donate if you do decide to attend one of college football’s most historic rivalries. www.ramblinwreck.com

The Five Stripes are usually the center of attention when it comes to MLS but all eyes may be on the visitors on Sept. 16 when world soccer superstar Lionel Messi will take to the pitch against Miles Robinson and Atlanta United FC. That match is part of the final five home games for United, from the matchup with regional rivals Nashville SC Aug. 26 to the home finale on Oct. 7 against Columbus Crew SC. The beautiful game is always on display when United is in action and even if you can’t join the rowdy 17s at the stadium, Atlanta
United’s pub partnership program is still going strong and various bars across Atlanta are perfect spots to take in the action away from the stadium. www.atlutd.com
Atlanta Dream
Rhyne Howard and the Dream are currently in a fight to make it to the WNBA playoffs. That means that the action at the Gateway Center Arena at College Park will be as intense as the regular season can get. The defending WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces will be in town on Aug. 22, and that will be the first of five home games for Atlanta between then and the final regular season game on Sept. 10 against the Dallas Wings. Every game is a big one at this point, and it will surely be a hot (but affordable) ticket to get into the final games of the regular season for the Dream.
