The latest trends in patios, porches and decks will have you spending more time outside than in
We Atlantans are blessed with more warm-weather months than cold, and it would be a crime to not take advantage of it. There’s something invigorating about relaxing in the fresh air, sunshine and sounds of summer—but it all starts with the space. Patios, porches and decks offer innumerable options for customizing your outdoor living area. Here are today’s top trends, just in time for some pre-summer improvements.

The result includes multiple spaces, featuring Gossen PVC decking, a Lynx grill, a custom-built fire pit and Fortress iron railings.
But don’t start stressing over your budget at the mention of adding a second kitchen to your home—outdoor kitchens can but don’t have to be as extensive as those indoors. “An outdoor kitchen can be as simple as a grill and prep area to a full-fledged kitchen equipped with refrigeration, grill or smoker (or both!), additional burner or ‘searing station,’ sink and prep areas,” Wheeler says, adding that costs can range from $300 for a simple grill to $50,000 for a complete outdoor kitchen. The beauty of cooking outdoors is that you’re not missing out on the fun, slaving away by the stove inside on a gorgeous day. Or even if it’s not a perfect day outside, it can still be more enjoyable to whip up something under the open sky. According to the HBPA, 62 percent of grill owners are now cooking outdoors year-round. Which leads us to the next trend… www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

The grill is a summertime icon and a mainstay in outdoor living areas. It seems only natural, then, that outdoor kitchens have become so popular. And they have. “Homeowners love to entertain family and friends outdoors,” says Leslie Wheeler, communications director for the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA), www.hpba.org.

On the patio level is an outdoor kitchen topped with a cedar pergola and a flagstone dividing wall with a water feature on one side and a fire pit on the other.
“Some of the most popular patio products today are fire features,” she says, explaining that an array of options are available for not only the style of the feature, but also the fuel, as well: fireplaces can be bio-fueled, gasfueled or wood-burning. But you don’t always have to huddle around a fire to keep warm. Outdoor heaters have become a popular request in patio, porch and deck projects of late, says Rick Goldstein, registered architect and co-owner of MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers], www.mosaicgroupatlanta.com. “We have completed seven or eight projects using heaters in the last couple of years,” he says. “The heaters are usually placed up high to give better overall distribution of the heat.” The cost of installing heaters is, on average, $2,000-$3,000, depending on the number and size of heaters. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Who says outdoor living areas can only be enjoyed in warm weather? Homeowners are finding ways to extend the season of use for their patios, porches and decks by including a fire feature or heaters for added warmth and ambiance. Wheeler estimates that fire features can range from $200 for a simple, wood-burning fire pit to $5,000 for a masonry or gas fireplace.

GOING GREEN OUTDOORS This Roswell deck by Decks & More, www.decksandmore.biz, features eco-friendly elements throughout—a quality stipulated by the homeowner from the beginning. Timber Tech composite decking in Pacific Walnut and Pacific Teak colors were installed in a herringbone pattern, LED lights illuminate the post caps and steps and native, drought-tolerant plants surround the new outdoor living space.
Chameleon lighting Now you see it, now you don’t… This might be what crosses your mind with the latest trend in lighting for patios, porches and decks. Many of today’s outdoor fixtures are being manufactured as part of structural elements—such as deck posts, half-walls or stair risers—so that they “disappear” during the daytime, when they’re not lit. These fixtures provide just the right amount of light to accentuate the design of your outdoor space, but not too much to glare into the neighbors’ yards. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Whether it’s due to landscape elevation issues or space constraints, patios and decks being built higher than ground-level are boasting something most other outdoor living spaces can’t: an incredible view of the horizon. Norm Shafer of Duradek Georgia, www.duradek.com, points to rooftop decks, noting that they are “fast becoming a cherished commodity in new-home developments. “No longer a feature restricted to urban centers or coastal regions, roof decks are being included in major suburban developments,” he says. “Roof decks allow homeowners to enjoy private outdoor space without the requirement of a large property.” To further maximize the view from these high-level outdoor living spaces, Shafer says that view-through railing systems are also a rising trend. “For the best in view-inspired railing systems, topless glass railings offer the most unobstructed view while still providing a secure perimeter and a wind barrier,” he says. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

UP ON THE ROOFTOP The owners of this Smyrna home enlisted the help of Duradek Georgia, www.duradek.com, to build a deck on their rooftop, maximizing space and taking advantage of their fantastic views. To allow proper water routing and drainage, the large double doors accessing the deck had to be raised three inches. The finished project features a waterproof Duradek Ultra Cork Macchiato vinyl floor and a Durarail Panorama Post glass-railing system.

The comforts of home It’s not called an “outdoor living space” for nothing—you’re supposed to feel comfortable enough to relax and enjoy the space for long periods of time. So forget that plastic patio set you bought on sale years ago—it’s time you upgraded to something more comfortable. Imagine your indoor living room, only outside. Now you’ve got the picture. “Outdoor furniture manufacturers have brought all the comforts of indoor furniture outdoors,” Wheeler says. “Deep cushioned seating, lovely colors and an array of throw pillows are available. The design trend is to make the transition from indoors to outdoors seamless.”
Check Your Deck In honor of national Deck Safety Month (May), here are some items to check to ensure your deck is safe and secure: ❍ SPLIT OR DECAYING WOOD Check supporting structures to make sure wood is still sound. Check decking and railing for splitting or decay. ❍ FLASHING Flashing is a metal or plastic guard that directs water out and away from the house. It’s installed where the deck and house come together, keeping moisture and debris from collecting between the house and the deck’s ledger board. Check to ensure flashing is in place and secure.

❍ GRILLS, FIRE PITS, CHIMNEYS, HEATERS AND CANDLES These features can create a warm and cozy deck atmosphere, but make sure any source of fire or heat is safely placed away from other surfaces and that the deck surface is protected by a non-flammable pad. ❍ LIGHTING AND ELECTRICAL Be sure all lighting is working. Clean any light covers to allow maximum light to shine through, and trim any plants or tree limbs that may be blocking light. Be sure all electrical outlets, appliances and features are up to code, in good condition and childproof if children are present. ❍ OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND STORAGE Test all outdoor furniture to be sure it is sturdy. Avoid placing seating right at the edge of the deck. If you have a swing or hammock installed, test the chains and ropes to be sure they are secure. Consider installing childproof latches on any storage boxes and benches. ❍ SURROUNDING TREES If you have tree limbs hanging over your deck, have an arborist regularly check the health of the tree to ensure there is no danger of decaying branches breaking and damaging your deck. Goodness Homegrown
Thanks to Georgia’s mild climate, you can grow a variety of vegetables year-round By Karon Warren
hether in salads, side dishes or main entrees, nothing tastes better than fresh-from-the-garden vegetables. If you have already planted summer vegetables, that’s great! If not, you still have time to plow and plant. In fact, given that Georgia has two major growing seasons interspersed with one minor growing season, there’s no reason not to have fresh vegetables on your plate all year long.
Knowing what and when Georgia’s two main growing seasons are spring–from March to May–and fall–from mid-July to September. “I would dare say, however, that we have more like three seasons,” says Emily Thomas, president and owner of Red Dirt Designs LLC, www.reddirtlandscaping.com, in Roswell. “We plant winter crops in September and then again in early February. Our ‘summer’ crops we usually plant in late March to early April.” Summer vegetables commonly include tomatoes, corn, squashes, potatoes, herbs, okra, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers and green beans. Fall vegetables include cabbage, carrots, greens, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, parsnips, celery, garlic, chives, leeks and fennel. Spring vegetables include lettuce, carrots and radish.
Preparing to plant Before starting your garden, it’s important to know where to place it in your yard. First, make sure you have a space large enough to accommodate the garden. Second, watch the sun. “The vegetables and fruits require at least six hours of full sun every day,” says Avi Moyal, owner of Atlanta Curb Appeal, www.atlantacurbappeal.com, in Marietta. “To figure out the best spot for maximum exposure, spend the day watching the sun move across your yard.” 38

Third, if planting in the ground, prepare the soil. “Ideally, your soil will consist of 20 percent clay, 40 percent silt and 40 percent sand,” says Betsey Norton, president of Going Green Horticultural LLC, www.gghort.com, in Marietta. “Adding organic matter, or compost, improves the soil texture and structure, which creates a better growing environment.” To determine the state of your soil, have it tested at your county extension office (see sidebar). The test results can guide you on what additional prep work will be needed before planting. For those creating raised beds, fill the bed with a good mixture of quality organic topsoil, vegetable organic soil and organic compost, says Adriana Hernandez, president and owner of Arcoiris Design Gardening, www. arcoirisdesign.com, in Atlanta. “Once the mix of soil is raked level, add organic fertilizer, and you’re ready to 40

plant or sow seeds,” she says. Once you start planting, be careful about which plants you put together. “There are many vegetables that improve when planted next to a proper companion plant. However, there are also some vegetables that do not mix well with others,” says Kate Wright, owner of Bloom’n Gardens Landscape, www.bloomngardens.com, in Mableton. “They may not be tolerant of certain root excretions, plant aromas or pollen.” For example, keep tomatoes separate from corn, cucumbers away from potatoes and cabbage apart from pole beans.
Maintaining growth After your vegetable garden is established, it’s important that you continue to monitor it every day. “If you see a weed, pull it. If you see a bug, pick it off by hand,” says Julie Thaxton, inhouse garden and landscaping expert
with Get More Curb Appeal, www. getmorecurbappeal.com, in Norcross. “Don’t wait until the garden becomes overgrown with weeds, as care will be overwhelming.” She also says to remove problematic plants and those that no longer produce so they do not create problems for remaining plants. Also, proper watering and irrigation is vital to a successful vegetable garden. “Water should be given to your plants in large quantities,” Hernandez says. “Do it early in the morning, every four to five days in spring and summer and every seven days in the fall and winter. Remember to water the soil, not the leaves.” Be sure to feed your vegetables too. “Plan to fertilize the garden at the time of planting as well as routinely throughout the growing season,” Norton says. “Ideally, an all-purpose organic plant food is best.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Keeping out unwanted guests One of the biggest threats to vegetable gardens is pesky bugs and insects. “Aphids, caterpillars, moths, all sorts of beetles and even birds will attack!” says Hillary Thompson, horticulturist and marketing director for Super-Sod Outlets, www.supersod.com, in Forest Park, Marietta and Lawrenceville. “Not to mention diseases. There’s not enough room to list the culprits and the arsenal.”
TROUBLE FINDING THE RIGHT COMPANY FOR YOUR REPLACEMENT WINDOWS?
So how do you keep these pests at bay? Think twice before reaching for just any pesticide. “You don’t want to use pesticides because you want to attract beneficial insects like ladybugs, lacewings and hoverflies,” says Matthew Klyn, founder and owner of GARDEN, www.gardenatl.com, in Atlanta. The best solutions are natural repellents. “There are many organically acceptable products that can be applied to your crops,” Moyal says. “Check with your local county extension agent, who can give you the latest information on these products.” Although planting a vegetable garden may seem a bit daunting, don’t be afraid of the challenge. “It’s all trial and error, so don’t get frustrated,” Klyn says. “Have fun with it!” Editorial Resources begin on page 67.

oday’s homeowners are living longer, healthier lives, often with multiple generations sharing space under one roof. “Baby
boomers are reaching retirement age, and they want to stay in their homes,” says Richard Hoffman of Specialty Builders Remodeling, www.specialty-builders.net. “It’s often far less expensive to modify an existing home to accommodate the owners’ needs than to move into a senior community.”
This design features greater visibility throughout the home, including fewer walls to make it easier to navigate.
This is why the concept of universal design is becoming increasingly popular in both new homes and remodeling projects.

Principles of Universal Design
Designing for all
Ron Mace, the founder of the universal design The seven principals of universal movement at the Center for Universal Design, design, which can be applied to both officially created the term “universal design,” design and products, are: defining it as “the design of products and equitable, flexible, simple, environments to be used by all people to easily understood, tolerant of error, the greatest extent possible, without the low effort, and size and space for approach and use need for adaptations or specialized design.” To most remodelers and interior designers, Source: Pam Goldstein, this includes functional design and space Master Kitchen Bath Designer LLC planning as well as aesthetics. While the concept of universal design includes everyone, the term “aging in place,” focuses more specifically on the aging population. “Aging in place is the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level,” says Michelle Nettles of MJN Associates Interiors, www. mjninteriors.com. “Universal design has become so popular in homes because people want beautiful, convenient and welcoming environments to live in and entertain guests in,” says Pam Goldstein of Master Kitchen Bath Designer LLC, www. masterkitchenbathdesigner.com. “If their home does not allow for temporary disabilities (sports injuries, pregnancies, operations, etc.), it will not serve them throughout most of their life conveniently and comfortably.” Basically, homeowners should be able to go about their daily routines with no difficulty, and often, it only takes a few fairly simple modifications to make a home easier to manage for all ages and abilities.
From concept to reality When creating a space with universal design in mind, there are several things that builders and designers will include: • Wider hallways and doorways with low thresholds or stepless entry, so anyone can enter the home easily.

Along with curb-less showers, other design elements often are used to make the bathroom a safe place: • Shower seats, either built-in or fold-down, make showering easier, and adjustable-height grab bars and handles also are common. • Hand showers make it easier to wash and rinse off. • Elongated, comfort-height toilets are safer to use and often more attractive. • A walk-in or elevated tub, such as Kohler’s Elevance Rising Wall Bath, is a good choice for creating easier access. • Non-slip floor surfaces, such as matte tile, are important.

lighting everywhere, complete with easy-to-press flat light switches. While it may seem like a lot of changes, most are very subtle, and you won’t even spot them at first glance. “Products designed for aging-in-place and universal design are not visibly different from their standard counterparts,” says Mike Shina of Windsong Properties, www.windsonglife.com. “The difference is design. They are designed for maximized use. Simple and inexpensive measures can be taken in the design and building process to ensure that the home can accommodate the future needs of its owners.”

he garage is no longer just a place to park cars and store golf clubs. Representing a significant portion of the home’s square footage, garages offer excellent storage, activity and customization options. Common upgrades today include painting the floors, replacing the doors and installing racks and cabinets to keep everything in its place.
Durable, stylish floors Gone are the days of dull, gray garage floors that peel and stain. Today, epoxy coatings are a popular choice for garage floors because they offer a strong and durable surface and the look of natural stone. While water-based epoxy kits are available at paint and home improvement stores, professionally installed 100 percent epoxy-based products are much

stronger, says Alan Mishkoff, principal/general manager of Granite Garage Floors, www.granitegaragefloors.com, in Atlanta. Plus, homeowners can choose from a range of colors for a unique custom finish. “We have hundreds of designer colors to include the extremely popular neutral tone finishes, like our most popular Cecelia Tan or our Baltic Brown Granite Finish, Mishkoff says. Typically, epoxy coatings take a day or two to install based on size and can be walked on within 24 hours. Concerned about slick floors? To prevent falls, Gary Damm, business development director at Amazing Improvements and Garages, www.amazing-garages.com, in Atlanta often adds slip resistance to epoxy-coated or stained concrete garage floors. Other garage flooring options include paint or polyurea coatings; polished stained concrete; PVC, vinyl or polypropylene tile; and roll-out PVC or vinyl. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Try Before You Buy Not sure which garage door style is right for your home? Image Doors offers a “Design Your Door” Tool on its website, www.imagedoors.biz, that allows users to upload a photo of their home and visualize different garage door styles with a variety of color, window and hardware options. When finished, users can save, print, e-mail or submit for a professional evaluation from Carriage House Door Company.

Designer doors “The garage is no longer an afterthought, which has fueled a desire for more stylish and reliable doors,” says Dennis Easter, vice president of sales and marketing at Image Doors, Inc., www.imagedoors.biz, in Milton. “It used to be that one- and two-car garages were the standard, but now homeowners want three and even four or more car spaces. The extra rooms are more essential.” Increased size and visibility means garage doors play a major role in creating curb appeal. “Garage doors can be upgraded just like the front door, shutters and siding,” says Chris Collier, sales manager at Metro Garage Door, Inc., www.metrogaragedoorsinc.com, in Douglasville. “Many older homes have weathered wood doors with no windows or just large rectangular windows. Today’s
Just 10 to 15 years ago, the only garage doors available were standard steel or wood panel doors, but options have evolved significantly during the last several years. Today, the options are almost limitless. “Garage doors are available in steel, composites and various woods that complement (rather than hurt) the curb appeal of a home,” says Al Richburg, president of Doorsmith, Inc., www.doorsmith.com, in Atlanta. “The most popular style is the carriage house door, which is designed to look like the Old World, bi-parting hinged doors from the horse-and-buggy days but operate just like a modern garage door and offer the convenience of operating electronically with a push of a button.” Another new entry in the market is the all-glass full-view door, which is great for modern-style homes.

“We recommend laying out wall spaces on graph paper or an equivalent computer app,” says Damm. “This way homeowners can play with the layout and see it before they commit to a vendor.” For a quick fix, Damm recommends Rubbermaid storage solutions available at big box stores. Professional garage improvement companies can offer a range of cabinets not available to the DIY homeowner and often at very competitive pricing. Beyond that, custom cabinetmakers can handle any request, he says.
Options and extras The versatility of a garage is one of its most attractive features. With the proper equipment, this seemingly onedimensional space can be transformed to serve a variety of functions such as game room, home gym, playroom, pet zone, man cave, party room, smoking room, craft/hobby room, home office and more without compromising the privacy and security of the primary garage door, says Brian Jones, managing partner, co-owner and co-inventor of

For best results, wait until late May or June to sod warm-season lawns. Apply a second application of fertilizer to warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia and centipede).
Lawns maintained at the correct height are less likely to have disease and weed infestation. Recommended heights: tall fescue—2-3”, centipede—1-1 ½”, Bermuda and zoysia—½ -1 ½”. Mow frequently, removing no more than one-third of the blade at each cutting, and grasscycle—allow grass clippings to remain on the lawn. The clippings decompose rapidly and add valuable nutrients to the soil.

Annual flowers such as petunias and salvia will bloom beautifully with a few timely pinches. Pinch at planting time and again the first or second week of July—to 3-4” above ground. Feed annuals monthly with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Be sure to deadhead for maximum flowers.

Be on the lookout for poison ivy. As new leaves appear, spray with herbicide as soon as possible to keep the plant from spreading.

Do you see shiny trails on the petals and leaves of your ornamentals in the morning? If so, slugs are on the prowl at night. Capture them by placing grapefruit rind halves among your plants. Position rinds with the peel side up, and slugs will collect underneath.
By mid-May, the ground will be warm enough for caladiums, dahlias, gladiolus and cannas. Mulch around newly planted trees, shrubs and flowers to reduce weeds, retain moisture and prevent damage from lawn mowers.
6
7
Your indoor plants will thrive outside in the right environment. Give your Christmas cacti, orchids and other houseplants a vacation while the weather is warm and the humidity level is high.
9
If your tomatoes had round, sunken, water-soaked spots on the bottom last summer, follow these steps to avoid blossom-end rot: mulch; make sure your plants get at least one inch of water per week; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer (like fresh manure); and don’t cultivate near the base of the plants.
Now is the time to plant heat-loving herbs like basil, oregano, thyme and dill. Staggering their planting will give you months of fresh herbs. “Hot weather” veggies such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, sweet corn, melons, squash and sweet potatoes can go in the ground now too. Mulch and water after planting.
The best defense against insects and disease in your landscape is good cultural practices. Water and mulch correctly and efficiently and be proactive in spotting potential problems. Use herbicides and insecticides carefully, always identifying the problem before you spray. Call or e-mail your county extension service for correct diagnosis of situations.

left between the roof decking and the outer tail of the roof rafter to ensure that the decking does not interfere with the installation of fascia board (that’s the board behind your gutters). Once the fascia is in place, this gap is supposed to be covered with an angled metal strip – drip edge – that kills the opening by overlapping the deck and the fascia. This is part of proper roofing procedure but is neglected in most cases. When drip edge is neglected, the unprotected gap provides a perfect starting point for critter invasion. Other penetrations should be secured with screening reinforced with hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is a coarse, heavy-duty metal mesh resistant to the usual efforts of rodent

benefit from a hardware cloth barrier installed underneath, and turbine vent openings should be masked the same way. Keep the little critters out, and you won’t have to trap them later. Whether you do it yourself or hire a critter control company, removal is only half the project. Without barriers, the evicted will return along with their kith and kin.

How to protect your floors without losing your mind Getting a new puppy or kitten can be exciting, WILL GROW WITH YOUR GARDEN” but with the many “accidents” that can occur“WE during the J L I N D E R D E S I G N A N D C O N S U L T A N T . C O M housebreaking process, you may start to worry about your carpets. To avoid replacing, it is important to either deal with stains promptly or select pet-friendly flooring for your Carpet • Ceramic Tile • Hardwood • Vinyl • Laminates “WE WILL GROW WITH YOUR GARDEN” home. Area Rugs • Expert Installations Act quickly to prevent a stain from setting. As soon as you see a stain, use a white cloth or paper towel to dab it up. A wet/dry vacuum can help remove liquid stains from carpet. Liquid dishwashing soap and warm water can also help to lift the stain, but do not use laundry detergent or detergent that contains bleach. Once the soapy solution is applied, a wet/dry vacuum cleaner or towel can be used to lift excess solution. Rinse the area with warm water and extract excess liquid. Another easy cleaning solution is a mixture of white vinegar and water. The acidity of the vinegar neutralizes the ammonia, which is alkaline, that is present in urine. If you are considering new flooring and have a pet or plan to get one in the future, consider purchasing durable, stainresistant floors that will stand up to the tests of your furry friend. • •

Carolyn O’Neil, MS, RD, co-author of “The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous!”, shares two of her favorite recipes that include summer vegetables. Avocado, Grapefruit Salad with Grapefruit Vinaigrette and Toasted Pecans
Thanks to Georgia’s mild climate, you can grow a variety of vegetables year-round
Add beauty and interest to a salad with healthy, colorful, crunchy ingredients, and choose dark greens with flavor punch. The vinaigrette is made with fresh grapefruit juice from the segmented grapefruit and red wine vinegar.

Summer vegetables commonly include tomatoes, corn, squashes, potatoes, herbs, okra, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers and green beans. Fall vegetables include cabbage, carrots, greens, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, parsnips, celery, garlic, chives, leeks and fennel. Spring vegetables include lettuce, carrots and radish.
Preparing to plant
Before starting your garden, it’s important to know where to place it in your yard. “To figure out the best spot for maximum exposure, spend the day watching the sun move across your yard.”

Georgia’s two main growing seasons are spring–from March to May–and fall–from mid-July to September. “I would dare say, however, that we have more like three seasons,” says Emily Thomas, president and owner of Red Dirt Designs LLC, www.reddirtlandscaping.com, in Roswell. “We plant winter crops in September and then again in early February. Our ‘summer’ crops we usually plant in late March to early April.”
For the salad: 1-2 heads Bibb lettuce, torn into bite-sized pieces 1 bunch arugula, torn into bite-sized pieces 2 Haas avocados, ripe but firm, peeled and cubed 2 Ruby Red or pink grapefruits, peeled and segmented, reserve excess juice ½ cup toasted pecan halves (toasted in a sauté pan) ¼ cup minced fresh parsley
▲Georgia Pecan Confetti Quinoa
For the dressing: 2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar juice from segmented grapefruit (approx. 3 Tablespoons) Freshly ground salt and black pepper to taste
Ingredients: 2 teaspoons olive oil ½ cup diced carrots ½ cup diced zucchini squash ½ cup diced yellow squash 1 garlic clove, minced 2 cups cooked quinoa (prepared to package directions) ¼ teaspoon finely chopped rosemary leaves ¼ cup toasted pecan halves or pieces (reserve 2 Tablespoons for garnish)
Arrange the lettuce and arugula on large platter. Arrange the avocado and grapefruit segments on the bed of greens. Combine the ingredients for the dressing, and drizzle over the entire salad. Garnish with toasted pecans. Add final garnish of minced parsley.

This gluten-free side dish features quinoa and pecans paired with confetti-colored sprinklings of orange, green and yellow veggies flavored with garlic and rosemary. Yield: 6 half-cup servings
Heat oil in large skillet and add carrots, zucchini, yellow squash and garlic. Cook until crisp tender. Fold in the cooked quinoa, rosemary and pecans. Season to taste with freshly ground black pepper and sea salt. Present quinoa on a large platter and garnish with additional toasted pecans.

hether in salads, side dishes or main entrees, nothing tastes better than fresh-from-the-garden vegetables. If you have already planted summer vegetables, that’s great! If not, you still have time to plow and plant. In fact, given that Georgia has two major growing seasons interspersed with one minor growing season, there’s no reason not to have fresh vegetables on your plate all year long.

oday’s homeowners are living longer, healthier lives, often with multiple generations sharing space under one roof. “Baby
boomers are reaching retirement age, and they want to stay in their homes,” says Richard Hoffman of Specialty Builders Remodeling, www.specialty-builders.net. “It’s often far less expensive to modify an existing home to accommodate the owners’ needs than to move into a senior community.” This design features greater visibility throughout the home, including fewer walls to make it easier to navigate.
This is why the concept of universal design is becoming increasingly popular in both new homes and remodeling projects.

What was once a tired landscape is now a more functional and beautiful outdoor living space. Bird feeders, pyracantha and itea help attract birds, while an informal terrace seating area made with irregular-shaped crab-orchard stone offers views of the trees, birds and other wildlife. Before constructing the terrace, the company corrected grading issues by adding a small stone wall along a section of the seating area to direct water away from the foundation. To prevent drainage problems, drain boxes that capture surface runoff were installed as well as a moisture-loving groundcover, which naturally absorbs water. A new privacy fence softened by dogwoods, itea and osmanthus minimizes views of neighboring yards.
