ONE OF THE HAZARDS of editing this magazine is the number of great design ideas our editorial team is exposed to with every project we feature. We absorb tricks of the trade on photo shoots, glean expert advice during interviews and are exposed to the next big thing at top trade shows, but, alas, all of that insight doesn’t make decision time any easier when it comes to implementing solutions in our own home—in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Every January, we devote an entire issue to kitchens, the heart and soul of our homes (whether we consider ourselves cooks or not). And, as my husband and I recently moved into a circa-1962 home—with original kitchen cabinetry, appliances, sink, hardware and more—let’s just say I’m a captive audience. The seven kitchens featured in this issue are noteworthy not just for their incredible marriage of form and function, but also for their stylish approaches. From a pair of antique Egyptian doors used to conceal pantries (page 78) to an integrated walnut island table that at once warms up a contemporary kitchen and doubles storage space (page 26), you may just find yourself dreaming up your next renovation … even if Elizabeth Ralls Editor in Chief your kitchen is not approaching @elizabeth_ralls | twitter middle age. When inspiration strikes, Atlanta creative Steve McKenzie is always prepared—in the most stylish of ways. “I

have so many sketchbooks,” says the multi-talented artist, who tends to take them on his travels and keep them by his bedside. They may not be in chronological order, but that’s no hamper to his creativity: McKenzie will launch a line of rugs this spring with next-door neighbor Verde Home.

DETAILED PLANNING WAS KEY in Shannon and Jay Baxter’s stunning master suite renovation. The couple enlisted Jo Rabaut of Rabaut Design Associates, a full-service design firm, to transform the cramped, outdated space into a warm and spacious retreat. “Every dimension was critical in this project,” says Rabaut. “Because the space was small, we had to be careful early on in the project that everything was laid out exactly where it needed to be so that we could maximize every square inch.” Sloped ceilings throughout the space prompted Rabaut and her team to take advantage of the height by relocating often-used essentials, such as the new custom double-sink vanity and standing shower, to the center of the bathroom while tucking away laundry machines and storage in tighter corners. In the closet, they eliminated a center wall and used the room’s perimeter for clever hanging space and shoe storage, a move that made room for an island and additional lighting. A reserved color palette was also crucial in making the suite feel larger than its small footprint. A rich gray-green hue in a variety of creative applications, from the glass tile and glazed millwork in the bathroom to the wainscoting and fretwork wallpaper on the bedroom’s feature wall, lends a calming and airy ambience. However, Rabaut was also mindful of incorporating the homeowners’ fun energy into the master retreat through splashes of turquoise and pink. A mix of materials and textures—brass, linen, marble, Lucite, glass and leather—also elevates visual intrigue. “Aesthetically, the goal was to create something modern and crisp but with a touch of glam,” explains Rabaut. “The suite is the most private portion of their residence, and it’s come to feel like a hidden jewel.”

A RESPECT FOR MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE INFORMS EVERYTHING THIS ARTIST CREATES IN HIS STORE’S SECOND-FLOOR LOFT—FROM PAINTINGS WRITTEN BY Kate Abney PHOTOGRAPHED BY David Christensen AND TEXTILES TO A BRAND-NEW LINE OF RUGS.

“When you’re an artist, it’s just in your being,” McKenzie says. He is heavily inspired by midcentury masters like Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies. “They empower me to be bolder than I would be otherwise,” he says.

14

WHEN STEVE MCKENZIE MOVED his eponymous store to 999 Brady Ave. in August, there was one feature the longtime artist could not do without: the openair, second-floor atelier overlooking his spacious new showroom and interior design headquarters. “The transition between art and design is pretty seamless for me, so

having a studio in the building where I also do interior and product design seemed like a natural fit,” says the former president of Larson-Juhl, who co-owns the business with his wife, Jill. “When you change studios, it’s interesting to see what it does to your work,” he says. The lighting, for example, is much different in McKenzie’s new studio. So he paints in the mornings, before the store opens, and in the evenings, after closing. When it comes to his creative process, exploration rules the roost. “I never begin with a destination in mind; I begin with materials,” he says. A true mixed-media abstractionist, he commonly begins with walnut-ink studies, many of which have been cropped, digitized and duplicated as fabric repeats for his signature line of textiles and soft goods. For his fine art, McKenzie’s approach is plainly visceral. Beginning with Belgian linen-wrapped panel, he smooths on layers of Venetian plaster, which he rubs with dry, powdered pigments and sands to a sleek finish, creating a textural background ideal for his contemporary, gestural brushstrokes. Painting mostly with acrylics, watercolor and gouache, McKenzie also dabbles in encaustics, cooking his signature wax blend right upstairs. One of his most vigorous recent projects has been developing an artful new line of rugs, launching this spring, with next-door neighbor Verde Home. Each design is based on an original McKenzie painting. “We’ve allowed designers to change out the colors completely [to suit their projects]. Just because I love orange and gray does not mean it will work in every room,” he admits with a laugh. stevemckenzies.com

McKenzie’s second-floor studio loft is filled with an amalgam of tools and materials he uses to make playful textiles and inspired art, from ink drawings, full-scale paintings and works on paper to fabric by the yard and a new line of rugs in collaboration with nextdoor neighbor Verde Home. In fact, the orange abstract at bottom right inspired his first full-scale rug, and will soon find a home in his and wife Jill’s Atlanta residence.

LASTING IMPRESSION

DESIGNER JOEL KELLY EMPLOYS DYNAMIC BUT LUXE DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR A TOWN HOUSE KITCHEN. TO TACKLE THEIR TOWN HOUSE’S unflattering layout, a pair of empty nesters turned to architectural and interior designer Joel Kelly. “Town houses are problematic in that kitchens are usually right in the middle of everything. There’s no formality to the floor plan,” says Kelly. His solution: A wall of stunning, steel-framed interior windows. “The thought behind this concept was that as you walk from the front door to the back, you wouldn’t notice there’s a kitchen, as your attention would be focused on this unexpected architectural element,” he explains. More than just a visual masterpiece, the operable windows and bifold doors help contain food aromas during meal prep and impart a light and airy appeal as natural light from the kitchen windows pours through to adjoining spaces. “Enclosing the area with solid walls to conceal the kitchen would have made the space dark and impeded visual flow,” says Kelly. Next up for the designer: addressing the kitchen’s lack of storage. Without a pantry or butler’s pantry, Kelly took the custom cabinetry up to the ceiling to maximize the limited square footage. A track ladder provides accessibility while doubling as yet another unique feature in this innovative kitchen. Far from stylistically one-note, the kitchen simultaneously exudes modern, old-world and industrial charms. Fumed oak flooring in an elegant chevron pattern adds beauty underfoot, while quartzite countertops, lime-washed oak cabinets, a plaster hood and a glossy ceramic tile backsplash generate rich layers of texture and color. “This kitchen was a unique thing for us,” says Kelly. “It was one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever worked on, and I would also say that the end result is definitely one of my favorites.” 21

MINIMALIST MARVEL

TAC STUDIO’S CARA CUMMINS CREATES A SUBTLE AND SEAMLESS KITCHEN WITH DRAMATIC IMPACT. THIS MODERN KITCHEN BY Cara Cummins of TaC Studios proves that functional space doesn’t have to sacrifice style. In their newly constructed home, the owners—recent Atlanta transplants with a penchant for contemporary design—were seeking an open layout with seamless visual flow to the adjoining spaces. To that end, Cummins installed expansive sliding glass doors to provide a clear line of sight into the backyard. “They wanted to make it such that if they were cooking at the island, they could have a watchful eye on their children playing out back,” she says. “The kitchen is also very open to the rest of the living level, which includes a dining room and family room. It creates a sense of connectivity and gives this young family an opportunity to constantly interact with one another.” In the kitchen itself, Cummins delivered a simple yet striking design. Custom SieMatic cabinetry recessed into the wall plays up the room’s modern flair, as do stunning red glass accents, while an integrated walnut table by Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design on the island helps soften the space with its warm tones. The kitchen’s high style is balanced with child-friendly features such as Silestone—a highly durable material that can withstand messes both small and large—counters and custom-designed island cabinets for toy storage, which allow the children to fully live in each space of the home instead of being relegated to the family room. Cummins also made sure essentials were only an arm’s length away, with integrated slots for cutting boards in the prep area, dishes by the sink and pans near the ovens. “Beauty and function can coexist,” she notes. 27

THE SECRET TO GREAT COOKIES IS NOT

WHAT YOU MAKE THEM WITH. I T ’ S

W H O .

The comforting sound of steady rain mingles with the laughter of children at play, cozy and dry on a gloomy afternoon. You check the oven timer...one minute left; the scent of fresh-baked cookies will soon draw them into the kitchen. “Better grab a few napkins”, you say to yourself, pausing just long enough to revise your projection: “Better grab a ton of napkins.” As if tied by the invisible bonds of chocolate-chip love, the group suddenly bursts onto the scene, a blur of darting hands, melting chocolate, smeary fingers and gooey grins. It’s an infectious moment, and you can’t help but smile to yourself and observe: “Gloomy afternoon, indeed.”

FAMILY JEWEL

DESIGN GALLERIA’S MARY KATHRYN TIMONEY TRANSFORMS AN AWKWARD LAYOUT INTO A SPACE FOR EVERYDAY LIVING.

TO ACCOMMODATE A YOUNG FAMILY OF four, Mary Kathryn Timoney of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio completely overhauled a cramped kitchen rife with out-of-date details. Timoney’s first order of business was to remedy the space’s poor layout. “The sink, stove and ovens were previously relegated to a narrow galley, while all the storage was out of reach at the opposite end of the room,” explains the designer. “It was almost as if there were two kitchens in one.” To unify the spaces, Timoney relocated the stove to the center of the room, while shortening the galley’s original 17-foot length with the addition of a pantry and butler’s pantry on either side. Meeting the homeowners’ need for a space where the family could work, eat and live, she also added an island across from the new range top to provide a place for the children to eat and do their homework at during meal prep. Once a cohesive layout was in place, Timoney focused on the kitchen’s aesthetic elements. She balanced the home’s traditional verve with the homeowners’ desire for a more modern look by including distinctive details in a clean, crisp color palette. Oversized ceramic subway tiles and an ornamental marble backsplash form a unique backdrop for a pewter-and-stone hood and sleek sconces in the cooking zone. Meanwhile, graceful mullion detailing on the upper cabinets and crystal orbs on the island are a classic touch. “Trust was at the core of this renovation,” says Timoney. “The homeowners allowed me to execute my vision, and the result is a beautiful space that has become the heart of the home.” 32

CLEAN SLATE

WARNER MCCONAUGHEY OF HAMMERSMITH INFUSES STYLE AND SUBSTANCE Emily Followill INTO THIS FLOOR-TO-CEILING RENOVATION PHOTOGRAPHED BY

THE OWNERS OF THIS DRUID HILLS HOME presented Warner McConaughey of HammerSmith with a tall order: give their kitchen a 21st-century update while preserving the home’s 100-year history. Rising to the challenge, McConaughey delivered a kitchen packed with both modern sensibilities and historic flourishes. He began by gutting the entire space, tearing down the walls to the adjoining powder room, breakfast room and den, effectively doubling the kitchen’s square footage. Relocating the stairwell farther toward the front of the home created room for a butler’s pantry and scullery kitchen. “Every single wall has been replaced; there’s nothing we didn’t touch,” says McConaughey. “It was nice that we had a clean slate to start over with, but we also had to keep the home’s original character in mind.” Although he removed the maze-like walls separating the small adjoining rooms—a common trait in older homes—McConaughey looked to the ceiling to create the illusion of intimacy while maintaining a modern-day, open-concept living level. “We used a variety of beams and headers in the rooms so that when you’re in each space you feel like you’re in a more historic room that makes sense with the rest of the house,” says the designer. This concept is most apparent in the kitchen, where an intricate beam design helps to define the room. To fulfill the homeowners’ “more modern” directive, McConaughey installed concrete and marble countertops in varying thicknesses and created ample hidden storage that keeps the kitchen void of clutter. The concrete backsplash, mimicking nautical wood slats, is a nod to the couple’s favorite vacation destination—Rosemary Beach, Florida. “They’re both working professionals, so they wanted to have life feel a little simpler when they got home,” McConaughey says. “It’s now a space where they can truly unwind.” 39

ABOUT THE JUDGES JAMES LOWELL STRICKLAND founded Historical Concepts, a traditional architecture and planning firm based in Atlanta, in 1982 after earning a master’s in architecture from Yale University. Historical Concepts artfully blends traditional design with modern lifestyles, creating custom homes that perpetuate the South’s deep sense of place. With this design philosophy, Strickland earned the Arthur Ross Award from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art in 2010, an achievement that recognizes the collective contributions of Strickland and his design team. Historical Concepts’ expertise in reinterpreting the roots of Southern vernacular design is also highlighted in Coming Home: The Southern Vernacular House (Rizzoli, 2012), which Strickland wrote with Susan Sully.

Penthouse Privvy Now may be the time to strike if you’re contemplating purchasing one of Atlanta’s penthouse suites: Inventory is dwindling in the city’s hottest luxury condo developments. In late 2014, THE RESIDENCES AT W ATLANTA – DOWNTOWN was down to four penthouses, starting at $1.5 million. Units range from 3,289 to 4,154 square feet, with two private balconies and glass staircases. The developer is offering an unusual incentive: free helicopter rides to destinations like the airport, concerts or sporting events. Over 35 units have been sold in THE RESIDENCES AT THE ST. REGIS ATLANTA, totaling $131 million in sales, according to developer Tavistock Group. The units, from 3,264 to 12,000-plus square feet, range from $2.6 to $9.5 million. More evidence of the postiive condo trend: BEACHAM & COMPANY, REALTORS reported that nearly one out of every four sales in October 2014 was a condo or town house.

Suburban Style Excitement about AVALON—Alpharetta’s attentiongrabbing, mixed-use development—begins from the ground up for interior designer Ann Wisniewski. MARMI, one of her favorite shoe stores, is opening in early 2015, when ANTHROPOLOGIE will also bring its trendy vintage style closer to suburban shoppers. Area designers such as Wisniewski, who lives in Roswell, now have quicker access to A-list homefurnishings retailers such as MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS, ARHAUS and WEST ELM, making it easier for busy clients and designers to meet up and discuss decor selections. In fact, some shoppers at Avalon (experienceavalon.com) may never feel like leaving. The first phase of the 86-acre, $600 million development will have 101 single-family homes and 250 luxury rental homes. Designed by LEW OLIVER and built by MONTE HEWETT HOMES, the residences have

The housing market rebound is infusing old projects, such as ONE MUSEUM PLACE (ompatlanta.com), with an exciting new energy. Developer JOHN WIELAND describes the luxury five-story condo across from the High Museum of Art as his “pet project.” Wieland—who has donated artwork and millions to the High—says the architecture, by MACK SCOGIN MERRILL ELAM ARCHITECTS, is intended to complement that of the Renzo Piano and Richard Meier–designed museum. Already eight of the 45 units—ranging from 1,600 to 5,300 square feet and $900,000 to $3.5 million—are reserved. Beyond the Peachtree Road location and views, intriguing features include direct access elevators, private garages and outdoor lanais, plus Gaggenau appliances, Waterworks fixtures and other interior selections by MARK WILLIAMS DESIGN ASSOCIATES. An owners lounge, a fitness center, a concierge, a guest suite, a dog park and a courtyard are among the amenities.

There’s more to come: CRATE & BARREL in early 2015 and THE CONTAINER STORE in the fall. They join retailers such as CALYPSO ST. BARTH, C. WONDER and SOFT SURROUNDINGS; dining options such as Ford Fry’s THE EL FELIX and Giovanni Di Palma’s ANTICO PIZZA NAPOLETANA; and mind/body spa EXHALE. Avalon’s town center–like Plaza hosts an ice-skating rink and live entertainment. With so much to see and do, those Marmi shoes better be made for walking.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham OH, DEAR. It’s January, only the most anxiety-ridden month of the year. You might deem it a month full of hope, new beginnings and clean slates. Me? I see January as the month in which I unintentionally break every single one of my New Year’s resolutions. Is it just me, or do we seem to aim a bit too high with those lofty intentions? Well, no matter, because this year, I’m going to compile something different: my wish list for Atlanta. First, I wish for a thriving year for our city’s arts community. We have a world-class symphony, an opera company, museums and theatrical groups. But if we want Atlanta to remain a world-class city, our community must support the arts with the enthusiasm and passion that they deserve. This is the year to start regularly attending exhibits at the High Museum, for example, or performances by The Atlanta Opera or Atlanta Ballet. And thanks to Uber, we no longer have traffic or the hassle of parking as excuses for not partaking of all that Atlanta has to offer. I also wish for Atlantans, both natives and transplants, to be mindful of the fact that our city is located in the South, which means that we need to relearn the Southern charm and civility that once defined our city. For example, when a traffic light turns green, it isn’t necessary to honk your horn at the driver in front of you. Also, try refraining from talking loudly into your cell phone while in public. You may find this hard to believe, but the rest of us don’t care what you have to say to your spouse or co-worker. Finally, wintertime in Atlanta does not call for short shorts and flip-flops. I realize that our winters might seem balmy when compared to Northern climes, but that doesn’t mean that you should leave your house half-naked when it’s 50 degrees outside. There is nothing charming about pasty legs and unkempt feet. And finally, here is what I don’t wish for Atlanta: a repeat of last year’s snow jam! 53

top left and right Artful arrangements in the great room, which overlooks Lake Chatuge, include horn brushes, Bungalow Classic’s Senta cabinet and a bench from Mrs. Howard. opposite In the dining room, texture in the form of limewashed floors, a rough-hewn mantel and a light elm pedestal dining table and slipcovered chairs, both from Bungalow Classic, complicate the play on light. Carved rooster lamp from Parc Monceau.

PERHAPS IT’S HER BACKGROUND as an art dealer that informs Beth Webb’s innate ability to discover beauty in unexpected places. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, after all. But when her clients settled on a lakefront property on Lake Chatuge in dire need of a makeover, ultimately they trusted the interior designer— and her inviting, multilayered aesthetic—to transform the home’s overwhelmingly brown architectural envelope into a fresh-faced beauty in which their family of five could find respite. The first order of business: to limewash nearly every mahoganycovered surface of the 10,000-square-foot house, from the floors,

stone and beams to the home’s pre-existing antler chandeliers. “It was a Montana application that we took the Western out of to make more contemporary,” Webb explains. While time was not on her side—after closing, the family needed to be in the house in less than six months—labor was in Webb’s favor, thanks to a commercial contractor who was enlisted by the hospitality-industry husband “to do the unthinkable in an amazing time frame,” Webb says. And while the designer maintains that, philosophically speaking, second homes are no different than primary residences

when it comes to decorating, Webb allows that she adopted a “no muss, no fuss” attitude with this one, which needed to be durable enough for an active young family but also stylish enough to entertain the couple’s frequent guests—all while keeping the expansive lake views center stage. Coincidentally, it was a Lake Keowee house, a former Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles showhouse, that initially drew these particular clients to Webb’s clean-lined, artful approach. While the result is not your typical lake house, the aesthetic is exactly what the family was after—a comfortably elegant space in which luxurious

64

textures, from rough-hewn woods to natural hide rugs, mix with low-maintenance materials, such as slipcovered dining chairs and upholstered pieces in acrylic-blend fabrics. Against a calming, monochromatic palette, these contrasts both evoke a Zen-like feeling and reveal a collected sense of style—no easy feat for such a turnkey project. It’s a testament to Webb’s unflinching eye for beauty; the home’s light and bright new bones are a deceivingly subtle reflection of the interior designer’s complex approach. PERCHED ABOVE THE TREES IN ONE OF ATLANTA’S PREMIER HIGH-RISE condominiums is a residence designed with a combination of bold gestures and understated luxury. When a busy New York executive and his wife decided to invest in a second home in Atlanta, they contacted Peace Design to create an environment sophisticated enough for entertaining business guests yet welcoming for the entire family. “The original dictate was to design a residence around an art collection, but one that remained warm and approachable,” says designer William Peace. Windows with sweeping vistas provide frames for the sculpture collection, while the interior walls create gallery-like spaces for paintings and photography. Luxurious materials such as bronze, marble, leather, wood, silk and mohair—hallmarks of a Peace Design project—are layered throughout the home. While the furnishings are a mix of vintage and modern pieces, the art is contemporary and was purchased from Atlanta galleries. “It was important to the clients that they make an investment in Atlanta and support the artists and galleries here,” says Peace. Todd Murphy, Jennifer J L Jones, Allison Stewart and Berenice Abbott are just a few of the artists included in the extensive collection.

The home’s overall design aesthetic is one of subtle panache. Vintage club chairs reupholstered in orange mohair flank an onyx table and create drama in the otherwise cozy den. A Ralph Pucci lamp anchors the living room, where a turned bowl by Ed Moulthrop and a large horse sculpture by Russell Whiting blend with other sculptural elements for a seamless urbanity. “On balance, the project exudes a modern elegance,” says Peace. There are multiple outdoor living spaces, one of which boasts a fireplace, that are furnished for year-round entertaining. Outdoor furniture from Christian Liaigre and Kolo Collection 74

match the contemporary, understated aesthetic of the indoor furnishings. By using the same color palette throughout, Peace Design ensured that the spaces would flow into the unobstructed views spanning from Kennesaw Mountain to Stone Mountain to Buckhead. Knowing his clients intended to expand their art collection, Peace established clean, modern spaces that command attention and maintain depth. “The home is interesting and substantive, and it’s going to continue to evolve as they add to the collection,” says Peace. ATLANTA DESIGNERS PULL BACK THE CURTAIN TO UNVEIL THEIR OWN RECENT KITCHEN RENOVATIONS. WRITTEN BY Kate

WARM WELCOME Interior designer MARGARET KIRKLAND established a “warm and soulful” ambience in her family’s newly renovated kitchen with the help of rough-hewn wood beams and patinated wood doors, a feature partly inspired by her former boss, iconic Atlanta designer Dan Carithers. “We purchased antique Egyptian doors at Scott Antique Market to create dual pantries to bookend a mahogany breakfront,” she says. Glossy white subway tiles, creamy honed granite countertops and streamlined ivory cabinetry help counter this tactility, creating a clean slate for more intricate accents like Indian iron lanterns and a vent hood constructed partly from fireplace remnants. Most ingeniously, a French antique trestle table and oldworld dining chairs sidle up to the island (which boasts a handsome set of gray rattan bar stools), and extend the dining space.

STREAMLINED SIMPLICITY

Though she and her husband, Ford, have lived in their home for 22 years, it wasn’t until last spring that CARTER KAY embarked on a complete kitchen renovation in conjunction with architect WILLIAM B. LITCHFIELD. Today, with its cleverly concealed appliances and vertical random-width paneling, the galley-style room reads like a butler’s pantry on another level. “I love that you can’t quite tell it’s a kitchen,” Kay says. Enhancing the room’s good looks are open shelves for small artworks and family mementos, leathered granite countertops and a large pantry, newly captured from a former home office and fronted by rustic barn doors. “The Dutch door in the breakfast area is probably our favorite thing,” she adds. “It makes it easy to bring in groceries, and hearing the outside sounds every morning is magic.”

81

DesignerKitchens.indd 81

URBAN MODERNITY and CRAIG DIXON all but gutted their Virginia-Highland bungalow to fashion this modern marvel of a kitchen. “It was influenced by our work at Lake Rabun and Lake Burton but still fits our style in the city,” says Pritchett. Avid cooks and frequent hosts for casual entertaining, they most desired an efficient work triangle, concealed state-of-the-art appliances and a beautiful sense of continuity among the kitchen, breakfast area, TV room and remaining residence. Spruce planks, rugged oak beams and black-painted cabinets produce an enveloping quality, but the cantilevered Calacatta Gold marble island top is the real showstopper; the paper-thin, deceptively strong surface extends two feet thanks to engineered steel supports, allowing it to comfortably accommodate four diners for relaxed meals.

Doorknockers

I REMEMBER WORRYING FOR MONTHS about the doorknocker I would put on the first house I bought in Atlanta. Then, while in Italy on business, I happened upon two: one shaped like a face, protruding six or so inches from the door panel, and the other shaped like a fist. I knew I had to have both—one for Atlanta and one for New York. But the stores were closed, and we were leaving. Undeterred, I called a friend in Milan and enlisted him to beat feet to Bologna and track down the knockers. He was able to get ahold of the figural knocker, but the hand-shaped piece was not for sale. (Well, at least I could still make a statement in Atlanta with the

other.) Years later, during a late-night trawl through Atlanta’s auction houses, I came across the hand! I was front and center for that auction, and I waited with the patience of Job for that lot number. I bought it for $250—which I later found out was a bargain. With Atlanta and New York all doorknock-ered up, I’m now on the hunt for one for my New Orleans rental (where I escape when I want to be close to Anabelle, much to her dismay). Could my next design conquest be a brass carnival mask? Maybe I’ll try Venice next.
