I’VE NEVER BEEN ONE TO DRAFT NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS. My birthday is in January, so the first month of the year has always been synonymous with the need for a fresh start—and the desire to accomplish more, worry less … and generally pave the way for a year that will surpass the previous in every shape and form. And while the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles editorial and sales teams certainly have some exciting tricks up our sleeves for 2016, the foundation for making things happen on a personal level often begins at home. In this issue, we visit five kitchens that have fundamentally changed the landscape of the clients who inhabit them thanks to purposeful design details like floating fireplaces, built-in dog bed nooks and a coffee-maker you can program from your smart phone, down to the temperature, cream and sugar. (And for the record, yes, it tastes better than Starbucks.) This month we also explore every last crevice of a newly built Peachtree Park abode—one nearly 17 years in the making—and witness first-hand the details that are important to custom home builders, from a 20-foot sliding iron door panel (paned-glass doggie door included) that creates a seamless indoor-outdoor connection to a barrel-vault ceiling in a master bedroom that feels equal parts sacred and symphonic. Finally, we visit four Atlanta offices that will give you a major case of organization envy. There’s no time like the present to take the small steps will set you up for success. Cheers! Architect Scott West brings motion into a modern kitchen, infusing the space with dimensional elements and industrial style.
IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT’S COOKING IN THE KITCHEN of this new, modern home designed by Scott West, owner of West Architecture Studio; his sculptural twist—a steel vent hood in a crystalline-inspired design—draws the eye to the main cooking zone in the Old Fourth Ward home. The blackened steel and faceted elements of the 4-by-6-foot hood echo a nearby floating fireplace, both custom pieces for the client. “The blackened steel is part of an interesting movement that’s been developing for some time now in modern design: to make things a bit more organic and artisan-oriented, often with a slight industrial edge,” West says. The vent hood, long counter drawers and tall cabinets, meanwhile, create an abstract composition of floating elements along the kitchen’s main wall. They are anchored by a stunning Crema Ondulare marble backsplash, the kitchen’s other wow factor. West had his eye on this particular marble, which showcases 12

movement but subdued colors, at Walker Zanger for some time before selecting it for this project. “I had been looking for an excuse to put it somewhere,” says West. The backsplash and wide-plank walnut floors provide more organic elements. From a distance, the honed Marron Cohiba stone counters seem demure, but up close, large crystals in the deep brown countertops provide dramatic interest. A waterfall countertop wraps around more cabinet and drawer space on the island, while walnut veneer cabinets with a gray stain help the kitchen blend into the nearby dining area and the living room. “What’s interesting to me is these kitchens that are beginning to be designed in a more minimalist way,” West says. “It’s looking less like a commercially functional space and more like a piece of art.” 14

STORYBOOK STYLE
Through creativity and collaboration, Melanie Davis proves less is more, infusing a Serenbe home with European flavor and subtle touches. PHOTOGRAPHY & STYLING BY
Melanie Davis
MELANIE DAVIS AND HOMEOWNER STEVE BESHARA, an artist, began redesigning the kitchen of Beshara’s Serenbe abode with this essential question: What is a kitchen in an English Cotswolds–style home supposed to look like? “We both really enjoyed the process of researching and then refining the look we wanted,” says Davis. “In our meetings we would plaster the conference room with everything from inspiration pictures from homes in England to countertop materials and wood samples. The creative process was a lot of fun because he got it. He has great taste and wanted to create a unique setting.” The strong European architecture of the exterior needed to be brought into the kitchen, which is sited in the center of the home. Davis is quick to point out that the project was a full collaboration between herself, Beshara, architects Edwin Rhinehart and Robert Pulliam of Rhinehart Pulliam & Co., John Bynum of John Bynum Custom Homes and Pearl Custom Cabinets. “If you spend enough time in a space,” Davis says, “it naturally comes together as you combine the exterior and interior architecture.” To that end, reclaimed timbering, rustic oak floors, wood cabinetry with the appearance of furniture and light plaster walls tie into the architecture. The upper cabinets were limited to the wine bar and coffee station to further convey the European style of minimal upper cabinetry. An integrated plaster hood with timber detail complements the timbercased opening to the great room. “In the end, we thought less is more,” Davis says. “Let the wood grain of the cabinets give the color and interest to the room, let the rustic oak floors and timbers give the texture, and let the subtle plaster walls give light and contrast.” 21

CRISP AND COHESIVE
Architect Kenneth Lynch and a talented design team meld form, fashion and function.
MEXICAN TILE FLOOR, BLACK APPLIANCES, plain white cabinets and a paltry island were a few of the challenges architect Kenneth Lynch encountered when he was enlisted to revamp his clients’ Buckhead home. Following a careful analysis of their needs for storage, cabinets and kitchen appliances by kitchen design expert Matthew Quinn, Lynch reworked the entire living area by moving the kitchen to the center of the space, which he rearranged to include informal dining and keeping rooms, the home office and the laundry. Even the kitchen entry point was improved to bring guests immediately to an island featuring a Calacatta Gold marble waterfall countertop. “Now the kitchen area itself is the hub of that family living area,” Lynch says. When redesigning the kitchen and an adjacent breakfast room, he elected to play off the exterior’s gray shingles and strong white trim. “We picked up the design motif,” he says. “We did not design the original house, but we carried the thought process.” The existing Mexican floor tile was replaced with heart pine hardwood floors, which, along with the honed marble, white ceiling and gray cabinets, 26

Cabinetry by Quinn’s firm, Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio, maximize efficiency and storage and make the space feel larger. Lynch also kept the architecture tailored to his clients. For the family’s pets, he added dog beds to the bottom level of the built-in bar cabinet (made of clear alder in a coffee stain), creating an aesthetically pleasing yet purposeful piece. Above the island, three lampshade fixtures are centered in a beadboard ceiling surrounded by Sheetrock, echoing the dining room ceiling and adding a warm glow to soften the space. “The whole scale works together,” says Lynch. BRIGHT AND FRESH
Dawn Bennett gives a family kitchen a style overhaul, streamlining and brightening the space with a dose of Cape Cod character. AT FIRST, DAWN BENNETT’S CLIENTS were resigned to live with their Tuscan-inspired kitchen, despite the fact that it clashed with their home’s Shingle-style architecture and didn’t suit their style. But after an upstairs renovation added a New England vibe to the home, the kitchen became next on their to-do list. The young family, who summered at cottages in Kennebunkport, Maine, had been initially drawn to the exterior style of the Alpharetta home. “It’s a pared-down, modern Cape Cod,” Bennett says. When discussing plans for the kitchen with them, she drew upon New York designer Victoria Hagan’s interiors in New England and the architectural designs of Shope Reno Wharton, based in Connecticut. Streamlining the space required tackling layers of applied plaster and drywall damage, and the kitchen was taken down to the studs. To brighten the space, white wood and stainless steel appliances are complemented by a pale-blue hue used on the beadboard sections of the coffered ceiling, while honed granite countertops echo soapstone. The palette was based on New England scenes of sand, water and cottages. To create more space in the dining room, Bennett removed a wet bar that was originally placed at an odd angle. A catchall spot was also eliminated to accommodate hidden storage along the refrigerator wall. The kitchen’s work triangle remained unchanged, but Bennett replaced the bilevel island with an oversized counter at a single height, which was more functional for the family. For a cohesive look, welded wire mesh on some of the cabinet fronts was carried over into an adjacent mudroom. The custom cabinets flank a thick cased opening into the kitchen that’s echoed in the design of the island. Clear glass pendant lights repeat the subtlety intended to provide a calm background to the daily hustle and bustle and bring a bit of Maine to the South. 33

Joel Kelly Design was established in 1998 with a firm philosophy predicated on the idea that collaborating with clients produces far greater results than simply designing for them. No matter the aesthetic, each project is finely tailored to the individual. Kelly’s formal training included education at Georgia Tech and Princeton University, as well as a stint at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Working under Michael Graves immediately following school put him in the thick of a well-known firm at an early age, giving him invaluable experience that he carries to this day. joelkelly.com
Glenda L. May, CKD From 1976 through 1989, Glenda May and her husband owned Creative Cabinet Designs, a full-service kitchen dealership company. May has seven years of experience working for Home Depot Expo Design Center, and her clients include President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. She received her CKD accreditation in 1993 and became an independent sales representative for Mouser Custom Cabinetry in 1997, covering Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina until 2011. In 2012, May took on the role of designing and training manager for Mouser, where she designs showrooms, helps dealers with design and pricing, and conducts training sessions at the plant in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Mark Williams After receiving his Bachelor of Science from Georgia Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture, Mark Williams went on to study at the École d’Architecture, Tolbiac, in Paris. Upon returning to Atlanta, he worked for various architectural and interiors firms (Brooks Burr & Associates, ASD, Heery International) before opening his first practice, LaslieWilliams, in 1998. In 2007, Williams opened his design collaborative, Mark Williams Design Associates. With experience in single-family residential design and interiors, multi-family design and interiors, and commercial interiors, Williams has developed a diverse portfolio. markwilliams-design.com

KOLLABS:
A COLLABORATION OF ARTISTS, CITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Collaboration comes in many forms, but the artistic duo behind KOLLABS reaches new heights—in both product and process. WRITTEN BY
Suzanna Cullen Hamilton
ANKE SCHOFIELD AND LUIS GARCIA-NEREY KNEW EACH OTHER THROUGH ART CIRCLES, but didn’t work together until 15 years ago when a gallery owner suggested a collaboration. Incorporating a vast array of mixed media that includes oils, acrylics, paper, varnish, photos, and resin, the pair, now known as KOLLABS, creates images of animals as they relate to both humans and their forest 42
environment. The pieces are more evocative and emotive than realistic, leaving the viewer to interpret the work. Their commitment to work together spans hundreds of miles and tens of hours every month as they travel back and forth between Schofield’s studio in Atlanta and Garcia-Nerey’s in Miami. “When we are in the studio working together, we focus on painting and creating the entire piece
together, from the conception through completion, to the last coat of resin or varnish,” says Garcia-Nerey. While their initial inspiration was rooted in the American West, their body of work includes swans, peacocks, mallards and herons, as well as deer, bears and bison. People are occasionally portrayed in their pieces, but the focus is always on the animal. “We determine what we want to create,” says Schofield, “but we let the process evolve when we’re together, and we take turns working on each painting, thereby letting each animal speak to us in its own way.” KOLLABS has been represented at prestigious nationally juried shows, including those at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming; the San Francisco Fine Art Fair; and the Texas Contemporary in Houston. They’re also represented in several galleries across the country, from Boston to Tulsa, New Orleans to Jackson Hole. “The spirit of our collaboration is derived from our interaction with one another when we paint together,” says Schofield. “And our perspective of interaction shifts between the animals, humans and the environment,” adds Garcia-Nerey. The artists finish each other’s thoughts—just as they do when they paint. kollabs.co

Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with refined inn rooms, cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At Montage Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. Naomi Von Habersham BY NOW, YOU LIKELY KNOW that I’m a traditionalist at heart. Cutting-edge design and state-of-the-art technology often leave me cold and, quite frankly, confused. But the one room in my house where I have long welcomed newfangled technology is the kitchen, where we’ve come a long way since the days of pot-bellied stoves and iceboxes. Take oven technology, for example, which has improved greatly over the years. If you’re as old as I, you might remember the days before microwave ovens were widely available, when popcorn was popped in a covered pan on top of the stove. (Yes, it’s true!) Microwaves changed the way we cooked, allowing us to heat soup or cook a chicken in mere minutes. And then, there’s the convection oven, which, like its microwave counterpart, reduces cooking time considerably, meaning people have more free time to, say, post selfies to Instagram. Although I heartily approve of both innovations, I admit that I just can’t part with my fifty-year-old GE electric oven. It’s a gem of an oven, despite its dated facade. And the bells and whistles that now adorn our kitchens! There are gas-fired pizza-ovens, cup and plate warmers, and built-in steamers. Wine now gets its own refrigerator, while many faucets come equipped with touch-technology, which lets you turn it on and off with barely a tap of the wrist. Even ice has gotten tricked-out, with some icemakers spitting out ice in the shape of a little top hat. Do drinks taste that much better with top-hat-shaped ice? Not necessarily, but it does add flair to an ordinary glass of water. But no matter how much cooking technology improves, there is one old-fashioned item that remains a stalwart in many kitchens. I’m not the only one who swears by a wellseasoned, cast-iron skillet by Lodge, the kind our mothers and grandmothers were devoted to. Often touted as the secret ingredient to great fried chicken, this skillet can’t get any better than it already is. I guess what they say is true: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

GROWING UP IN A PENNSYLVANIA COAL MINING TOWN with 700 people, Michael Ladisic never imagined himself building breathtaking homes in a city boasting half a million residents. After moving to Atlanta, where he practiced as an attorney and small-business owner, Ladisic renovated his family’s former home in Peachtree Park as a weekend hobby. Soon after, neighbors and friends started knocking on his door. By 1998, Ladisic was bursting at the beams with requests. He decided to build his former pastime into a full-time career and started Ladisic Fine Homes. As a premier builder in Atlanta, Ladisic has cultivated some of the finest homes and renovations in the area. So when he finally caught his white whale—a large vacant lot in Peachtree Park that he’s had his eye on for 17 years—he became his own client and teamed up with architect Linda MacArthur, interior designer Sherry Hart and kitchen and bath design expert Matthew Quinn for the personal project of a lifetime. Here, Ladisic opens up about building his dream abode from the ground up. 61

AH&L: WE LOVE HOW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE “LIFERS” AT PEACHTREE PARK. Michael Ladisic: We have lived here for 27 years
and love our terrific neighbors. Everyone is friendly and neighborly. And like us, many people have lived in multiple houses in the community—this is our fourth home in the neighborhood. BUT YOU’VE ALWAYS HAD YOUR EYE ON ONE PARTICULAR PROPERTY. We tried to buy this single lot from the owner for more than
a decade. And 17 years later, it was ours. We knew it was the one because it was nestled on a larger, flatter lot, making it ideal to 64

build a home that used the entire footprint for a sprawling, lightfilled house. WHAT INSPIRED THE STYLE OF THE HOME? I’ve always admired the architecture of Rosemary and Alys Beach on the Florida coast, so architect Linda MacArthur helped me collect my scattered ideas into a cohesive design. The home’s coastal influences can be seen with the Texas limestone façade and large windows that connect the entire home with the light-filled yard. I wanted the house to be dramatic and inspire people to think outside the box—when every-
one wants big baseboards, go super small and thick. THE EXTERIOR IS COMPOSED OF A MIX OF NATURAL ELEMENTS.
I tried to balance simplicity with enough details to make the home interesting. The front façade combines Texas limestone from Stone Center of Georgia, oversized brick that we painted and large leaded windows from Hardeman Fine Art Glass. But the front iron doors from RG Ironworks really set a big, dramatic tone for guests as they enter the house. THE FLUID INTERIOR BOASTS INTERESTING ARCHITECTURAL 65

FEATURES AND TEXTURES. I love the home’s great sight lines—from the
cased openings through the dining room to the beautiful curved foyer and staircase that make a beautiful entry statement. In the sitting room, the couch is anchored behind a large arched cutout that was originally intended to be wine cellar. (We determined it was odd since we’re not crazy wine connoisseurs.) Interior designer Sherry Hart advised that we add grass cloth for texture and paint all the ceilings pale gray to warm up things. In the master bedroom, we did a dramatic 18-foot barrel-vault ceiling lined with 2-inch boards in an antique-patina finish by Larry Hoyt. THE ENTIRE HOME FEELS CONNECTED WITH THE LUSH OUTDOORS. We spend so much time outside. The courtyard was the one element of the project that made everything come together. Natural light pours into every 67

The 18-foot barrel-vault ceiling in the master bedroom is more dimensional thanks to antique-ďŹ nished wooden boards. Judy Long, a decorator friend of Lisa and Michael, devised the solution for arched door shutters for privacy and to protect from harsh lighting.

My wife loves to garden, so we teamed up with landscape architect Graham Pittman to design a cozy space—even though it’s surrounded by tall walls. YOU AND YOUR WIFE, LISA, HAVE FOUR DAUGHTERS—HOW HAVE THEY INFLUENCED THE HOME? The house was built to accommodate large
groups of friends, while there is room for Lisa and I to get away if we need some peace when the girls come home from college. I’ve also always had grandiose dreams of having at least one wedding in the backyard. The terrace off the master bedroom lends itself to a grand entrance for the bride onto the lawn. Thankfully, the girls are on board with this idea. See Resources, Back of Book. 71

SERENE SANCTUARY ROBERT BROWN CULTIVATES A CALMING YET SUMPTUOUS APARTMENT FOR A WORLDLY COUPLE IN SEARCH OF A COMFORTABLE HAVEN. WRITTEN BY
Jennifer Boles PHOTOGRAPHED BY
Emily Followill
Although it was work that first brought two European transplants to Atlanta, it was their desire for relaxation that prompted their move to Buckhead’s Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, where the couple purchased an apartment on the 39th floor. Impressed by the building’s Robert Brown–designed model unit, they enlisted the Atlanta designer to create a restful home that reflected their streamlined tastes. “It was all about keeping it über simple,” explains Brown, who kept decorative flourishes to a minimum. Settling on a color palette of “tons of white with a little black and gray,” Brown created a serene backdrop of pristine white walls and ceilings and pale wood floors. Likewise, only neutral, solid-colored fabrics were chosen, with texture, 74

Interior designer Robert Brown set the living room’s relaxing tone by painting walls and ceiling in Benjamin Moore’s soothing White Dove. A set of four Baker, Knapp and Tubbs swivel chairs and an upholstered ottoman (covered in fabric by DeLany & Long) add sculptural presence around the fireplace, as does the small metallic drinks table by Baker.

A long corridor leading to the living room serves as an art gallery with 12 niches, each displaying a work from the homeowners’ extensive collection. To create a sense of intimacy, Brown broke up the pattern of the oak ooring by having it laid both vertically and horizontally.
76
BobBrown.indd 76
11/24/15 8:45 AM
Brown divided the shapely living room into three distinct areas, including two for seating and a section for dining. Because the wife likes the legs of furniture to show, he chose skirtless dining chairs by Barbara Barry for Henredon.

not pattern, their only form of embellishment. Notably absent are draperies, which the wife eschewed in favor of recessed mechanical blinds. Even furniture was selected for what it lacked—namely, prominent hardware and conspicuous wood grain. For all of the home’s minimalism, however, Brown maximized its comfort with furnishings that soften the interiors’ clean lines. Throughout the apartment, an array of comfortable seating encourages 78
restful moments, while expansive rugs add warmth and coziness to their contemporary environment. Even the home’s art, a mix of black-and-white photography and monochromatic paintings, proves relaxing. “Sometimes, art can be too interesting,” notes Brown. “Because we wanted to create a calming mood in the home, we chose art that was not too complicated or intense.” As much as the clients’ sensibilities guided the design process, so too did the apartment’s architecture, especially its myriad windows, which offer views of the downtown skyline. “It’s a different mindset doing high-rise homes,” admits Brown, a veteran of skyscraper decorating. “People like focusing on the view, so as a designer, you’re often orienting furniture around it.” It’s these easy-to-enjoy city views, coupled with the designer’s clean, purposeful decor, that give this apartment the feeling of a luxury hotel, one that fosters the kind of peace and tranquility homeowners welcome at the end of a busy day. As Brown says of the home, “The color palette, functionality, and cleanness—it’s very European,” which suits this worldly couple to a T. See Resources, Back of Book.

IT’S BEEN LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR since interior designer Melanie Turner moved her business to the Galleries of Peachtree Hills, but her 10-person staff has grown quickly, and they’re maximizing the potential of every crevice of the 1,235-square-foot space. “It’s fresh, clean and elegant,” says Turner of the light-filled Buckhead office, which employs long linen drapery dividers to designate desk areas for each designer and an all-white color scheme to allow features like dark floors and iron-clad windows and doors to create a sense of drama. Turner’s signature glamour is perhaps most fully on display in the designer’s own office, where a custom wallcovering designed by Turner and Penshaw Hill enlivens a room already ripe with statement, including a brass giraffe from England and overscale painting by Todd Murphy. It’s the office’s rear designer resource room, however, where much of the magic happens thanks to a devoted design team always on the go and sourcing the perfect combinations.

WHEN ARCHITECT BILL INGRAM began looking for office space in Atlanta nearly three years ago to serve his local clients, he was pleased to discover that ADAC would be opening up a portion of its highly coveted real estate to launch a limited number of Design Studios. One of those clients was Danielle Rollins, and the two got along so well, they debuted their joint business venture, Rollins Ingram, in 2014, and moved to ADAC earlier this spring. A windowless but open box with high ceilings and exposed painted concrete overhead, the layout prompted Rollins to paint the walls in Ralph Lauren Reservoir Blue, which not only allows the narrow space room to breathe, but also furnishings like the Saarinen table and glossy white desks to shine. The pair accentuated that crisp color contrast with sumptuous texture, in the form of sisal floors, a rattan globe pendant, and Thibaut grasscloth, while framed renderings of Ingram’s recent projects and an abstract by William McLure round out the casual-chic space.

“The office is an equal mix of fashionable and functional,” says Danielle Rollins. “It’s our version of industrial meets the beach.”
Design at Work This shared ADAC Design Studios space accommodates roomy workspaces for two as well as a client meeting area and storage wall for fabric swatches. Both intuitively drawn to the water, Rollins and Ingram employed the rich nautical hue, Ralph Lauren Reservoir Blue, to be equal parts soothing and energizing—“our version of industrial meets the beach,” says Rollins. Ingram concurs: “This office reflects our combined causal signature aesthetic using crisp blue and white, natural rattan, raffia and chrome,” he says. “All of this works together to give off a breezy summer vibe year-round—important for a windowless space!” A fully stocked bar completes the gracious feel.

PROMPTED BY THE QUICK GROWTH of their respective companies—and a desire to leave room for expansion—textile designer and artist Clay McLaurin and interior designer James Wheeler opted to reimagine the look of a traditional design studio, putting a fresh spin on shared office space in an open but cohesive, light-filled Old Fourth Ward space. Longtime friends, McLaurin and Wheeler’s challenge was designing the space to accommodate both business and creativity. Their main objective: to create a client-facing design office with distinct areas for conducting formal meetings, as well as an artist studio where product can be designed for sale to the trade. To accomplish this, a pass-through wall was reconstructed by enclosing it on one side and adding cabinetry on the other to house a designer resource library. Ceiling-mounted Belgian linen panels act like doors, which can be closed for privacy, while whitewashed surfaces allow the pair’s artistry to shine.

“Our goal was to create an environment that was both beautiful and approachable while maintaining a sense of restraint,” says interior designer James Wheeler.
Design at Work Clay McLaurin and James Wheeler’s shared Studioplex space is not only a brilliant interpretation of the designer and artist’s personal aesthetic, it’s also an expert exercise in mixing vintage and found objects with custom and modern pieces. In Wheeler’s office, top left, an antique fireplace surround made in an old factory in Athens, Georgia, adds architectural interest. On the other side, a pair of 19th-century French doors opens to reveal a designer resource library. The pair commissioned the large, custom work table from North Carolina artisans; the whitewashed table functions as both a conference table and work surface. You might find McLaurin dreaming up his next watercolor or unrolling fresh textile collections for Clay McLaurin Studio; his upholstered poufs, in Maze and Hollyhock, anchor the rear wall.

CREATING A SPACE THAT would reflect his personal style—and display an aesthetic that would relate to today’s buyers—proved of great importance when it came time for Bonneau Ansley, III to design offices for Ansley Atlanta Real Estate’s clients and its 25-member staff. Ansley, founder and president, and Hil Harper, vice president, enlisted Atlanta interior designer Kay Douglass of South of Market to create a minimalist yet welcoming “home away from home” inside this Keith Summerour-designed building, located on a future section of the BeltLine. Douglass updated the 6,000-square-foot office in a sleek, inviting style with elements such as shiplap walls in the entry. A neutral backdrop of white and grey accentuates original elements like iron windows and an industrial-style ceiling. Removing walls and adding interior windows creates functional space, like individual offices, waiting areas and a multi-functional hub dubbed the “plug and play room.” “It’s a happy place for agents to work and collaborate,” she says.

“Bonneau and his team are innovative, forward-thinking, young and vibrant—as is the space,” says designer Kay Douglass.
Design at Work “Residential design is about capturing the individual’s personality and translating that into the design of the space,” says Douglass, who employed principals of residential design to create an office with an air of whimsy. In the “plug and play” room, above and right, yellow chairs from Dot & Bo, custom multicolored stools and round CB2 tables are playful pieces that eschew any illusions of a cubicle-like space. Overscale lighting and upholstered panels from Douglass’s South of Market complete the look. In a conference room, left, lighting from R. THE KITCHEN
IF THE HOME IS THE SOUL of Atlanta families, then its beating heart must surely be the kitchen. Yes, for years, our kitchens were designed to be separate from the rest of the house, but we would inevitably gather there. And, when you get right down to it, it doesn’t matter if your kitchen hasn’t been remodeled since linoleum was on trend—or if it has been featured in the pages of this very magazine; the kitchen is how we Atlantans convey our sense of community. With 48 first cousins, my family never had to endure the indignity of a childrenonly dining table. Why, we children were almost given free reign in the kitchen! Don’t get me wrong—we realized we were in the way, as aunts screamed while the mashed potatoes and red-eye gravy went flying. But that’s where our mamas camped out, and we didn’t care if we had to sit quietly
under the counter—the kitchen kept us all together. My mother built her personal dream house with a spacious kitchen that boasted two love seats and a secretary just for her cookbooks, which, admittedly, she could have pulled from more (her cooking left a lot to be desired). But we didn’t care that her Yankee-fied mind couldn’t understand the beauty of canned Frenchfried onions or the fact that that ambrosia salad requires mayonnaise, marshmallows and whipped cream. Our Mama chose to be in the kitchen anyway, concocting something wretched and vaguely Norwegian, and despite the smells, we wanted to be near. As the years passed and her cooking specialties became Hamburger Helper and Chicken à la King, it still didn’t matter; we were happiest with Mama in her beloved kitchen.
Painted diamond floors and a heart-pine butcher block-topped island anchor this light and bright Buckhead kitchen updated by K2 Construction and Beth Ervin.

MARCIA’S MOM MAY NOT HAVE TAUGHT HER HOW TO MAKE A PROPER AMBROSIA, BUT SHE DID CEMENT THE IDEA OF THE KITCHEN AS THE NUCLEUS OF THE HOME, REGARDLESS OF ITS STYLE OR SIZE.
