Renewal

PORTRAIT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES

EVERY JANUARY, I fall for other magazines’ cover blurbs on the newsstands. “New Year, New You;” “Make it your Best Year Ever;” “Stay Motivated;” “Organize your Life!” Who among us doesn’t long for the chance to reinvent, rediscover and rejuvenate? Lucky for me, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles chooses to focus on kitchens each January—but that doesn’t mean a new kitchen can’t transform your life in new and meaningful ways. Time-saving appliances, cabinet-drawer inserts, touchless faucets, dimmers employed at the touch of your smart phone: these are small design details that can go a long way towards reducing stress and increasing your quality of life. (Check out our design community’s favorite innovations on page 38.) In keeping with new beginnings, this month we are pleased to introduce two fresh features in 2017. The “Southeastern Spotlight” feature in our Home section will allow us to set our sights on designers throughout our vastly talented region—many of whom you may find at this spring’s secondannual Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens. Also this month, we welcome Suzanna Cullen Hamilton as our new backpage columnist. A former Atlantan (and antiques dealer) turned Angeleno, she’ll send us a postcard each month with her humorous take on life on the Left Coast. Welcome, 2017. We look forward to sharing the best design, architecture, gardens, showElizabeth Ralls, Editor in Chief rooms and culinary gems our city has to offer! @elizabeth_ralls | twitter @eliz_ralls | instagram

JOHN

PORTMAN WRITTEN BY Suzanna

Cullen Hamilton

Atlanta architect and real estate developer John C. Portman, Jr. forever changed the geographical and business landscapes of cities across the globe, integrating art and atmosphere into massive urban mixed-use developments.

1950s: John

C. Portman, Jr. graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in architecture and opened his firm in 1953, the same year he incorporated his first sculpture commission into his architectural design.

1960s: Portman literally and figuratively shattered ceilings when he designed the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta; the 22-story atrium with glass elevators was the first contemporary atrium hotel in the world. Portman also began the development of Peachtree Center, a sprawling mixed-use complex that now anchors 14 blocks downtown. With the creation of the Merchandise Mart (now AmericasMart) and ADAC, Atlanta becomes a national design anchor. 1970s: Portman’s prestigious hotel developments expanded to include The Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta and The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in Los Angeles. top Architect and real estate developer John C. Portman, Jr. above Portman’s downtown Atlanta restaurant, JP Atlanta, includes artwork created by Portman himself. opposite, clockwise from top Built more than 50 years ago, ADAC helped solidify Atlanta as a national design anchor; natural light flows through the design center’s expansive core. 1980s:

1990s: Portman

received international acclaim when he opened the Shanghai Centre, the first mixed-use project in the bustling Asian city. Suntrust Plaza opened in Atlanta. 2000s: Projects in Beijing, Mumbai and Shanghai reinforced Portman’s international impact on multiuse developments, while projects across the United States ensured his legacy. The High Museum of Art opened John Portman: Art & Architecture, an exhibition shown around the world. In 2016, Portman transformed 230 Peachtree, an office building he first built in 1965, into a Hotel Indigo, restaurant JP Atlanta and office space; it opens to AmericasMart. TODAY: John Portman & Associates maintains offices in Atlanta and Shanghai and continues to develop international properties. With the firm in its second generation, Portman now spends his time sculpting and painting.

Experience

he cemented Atlanta’s reputation as a high-profile convention city. His urban mixed-use developments reached a global scale with expansion into Singapore. Portman greatly enhanced San Francisco when he developed the Embarcadero Center on 8.5 acres in the Financial District.

After noticing that people look down and do not speak in elevators, Portman designed glass elevators for the Atlanta Hyatt Regency in 1967, noting “a glass elevator lets people’s spirits expand.”

The Legacy

Over the course of more than 60 years, Portman has received numerous honors, including being named an Academician by the National Academy Museum & School, receiving the Exceptional Achievement Award from Georgia Tech in 1986 and having chairs named for him at both Georgia Tech and Harvard. Portman has served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Atlanta College of Art and Georgia Tech; is trustee emeritus of the Atlanta Arts Alliance; and has served as the director of the High Museum of Art.

FOREVER YOUNG Clary Bosbyshell infuses a 1930s Ansley Park kitchen with modern patina.

W

hen Ansley Park homeowners Steve and Emily Lovoy sought to add updated elements to their traditional 1930s home, they enlisted designer Clary Bosbyshell, who nudged the couple to incorporate creative additions and fresh materials. To that end, the designer focused on mixing metals and clean, functional design to create a young, modern aesthetic that fit the space and the family’s lifestyle. Bosbyshell designed a zinc vent hood with unlacquered brass strapping to tie in with the kitchen’s unlacquered brass hardware and faucet/pot filler. “What I love about unlacquered brass is how it patinas over time,” Bosbyshell says. “It gives that warm and lived-in feel.” Glass panes in the room’s steel-framed doors allow natural light to flood into the kitchen at certain times of the day, while library lights over the windows and ceiling pendants over the island create mood lighting at dusk and at night. The island has a simple front but got the x factor, literally, with the designs on each end. “It is clean but with a hint of something aesthetically cool with the x,” she says. 17

KOY_2017.indd 17

11/29/16 9:22 PM

Bosbyshell, also a mother, understood the desire to balance beauty and function in a family kitchen. To maximize space, pullouts hold kitchen items the homeowners use regularly, such as cookie sheets, a spice rack and Le Creuset cookware. The farmhouse sink is deep enough to hold larger items such as a Dutch oven, and faux leather on the barstools makes it easy to wipe up spills. White Carrara marble on the backsplash, countertops and cabinets creates a clean look amid the aged aesthetic of the metal tones, gray island and dark window mullions. “We’ve done a lot of things that can really transcend time,” says Bosbyshell.

SUBTLE & SLEEK Designer Lauren DeLoach creates a fresh yet traditional hub for a family’s new home.

B

y themselves, the arched tiled ceiling, floor-to-ceiling curved iron windows, limed-oak island and marble backsplash could each steal the show in this Marietta kitchen. But together, the elements work as a team with blockbuster results, as did designers Lauren DeLoach and architect and builder Rick Greene, who collaborated with homeowners Allison and Robb Borden. “It was a true partnership and became such a friendship afterward,” says DeLoach. The Bordens and Greene drew the plans for the kitchen and designed details such as the cabinets and the tiled alcove that serves as the range hood. Even the look of the center ceiling medallion was carefully considered. Subtle variations in texture (in the form of polished and mosaic tile) and color, such as pale-putty cabinets and the limed oak on the island, result in a classic kitchen with a twist. The island’s wood grain transitions to the solid finish on the Carrara marble 23

countertops and pewter hardware. Even the marble slab selected for the backsplash shifts from gray to taupe to hints of green. “It just has such a range of color. We didn’t want it to be too austere,” DeLoach says. “We loved how it picked up on the warmth of the wood we were using and kept it cool at the same time.” The kitchen serves as the hub for a family of six. Bells and whistles include a TV hidden behind the marble slab over the range, which is on a hydraulic lift and recedes into the ceiling. The result is a harmony of sleek and traditional styles. “Everywhere you look, there’s something interesting, but not one thing overpowers the next,” DeLoach says

W O R T H THE WAIT An artist’s longtime yearning for a kitchen face-lift comes to fruition in gleaming style.

C

ourtney Walker’s clients accumulated two years’ worth of ideas before beginning their kitchen remodel, but they needed the designer’s expertise to help blend them together and effectively execute their vision. Pictures of brushed-brass lights on an inspiration board created by Walker’s client, an artist and gallery owner, dictated the finish for the plumbing and hardware. But using brass in multiple places required Walker’s powers of persuasion. After all, her client’s husband had removed all of the shiny brass doorknobs when they moved in a few years ago. Walker sent photos to show him that today’s brass finish is nothing like the brass of the ’80s. The rubbed-down brass fixtures now blend with the three Darlana lanterns in a gilded iron finish over the island. Gold specks and veining in the white Victoria Falls quartzite countertops tie in with the fixtures and complement the navy blue island (in a matte finish), which also features brass barstools.

Widening the opening made the already-large kitchen an even more dramatic space, and Walker replaced the tiny island with one large enough for two dishwashers and wrapped it with shiplap siding. The shiplap, which Walker suggested, continues on the ceiling and the custom-designed range hood set against white subway tile. Other distinctive features include a drink station, prep sink, breakfast bar and family workstation, as well as functional extras such as a warming drawer and new windows. “It’s a bright, wonderful kitchen,” Walker says. “It puts a smile on my face every time I see it.”

“I like to introduce subtle accents, such as metal mullions on a glass door. I recently used this blend of metal, glass and wood on a custom range hood in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2015 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse and was very pleased with the end result.” –Beni Borza, Kingdom Woodworks “We like to approach the kitchen space as ARCHITECTURALLY AS POSSIBLE. We look at adding as large an area of windows as possible without disrupting function. BIG WINDOWS can give BIG DRAMA and lots of needed natural light. We think about not only what’s on the floor of the kitchen, but we think about THE CEILING as well. We often will do something interesting to the ceiling and work that into the overall design.” –LINDA MACARTHUR ARCHITECT

“The Miele steam oven is a multi-tasking appliance my clients adore. There’s a variety of things to use it for, from hard-boiled eggs to cooking rice to making 36 cookies at once. The oven looks small but can hold a ton. Everything you need is on the digital screen so you don’t have to get a cookbook out for directions like other models. My favorite part is that you could leave the house at 7 a.m., and program your chicken to be ready by 7 p.m. Perfect for working moms out there!” – AMY MORRIS, AMY MORRIS INTERIORS

FIT FOR A CHEF

Deliberate design decisions strike a balance between form and function in chef Kevin Gillespie’s entertaining-friendly kitchen. Ruhlin

STYLED BY

Thea Beasley

“PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO HANG out in the kitchen, and I think that’s even more true when you’re in the home of someone who cooks for a living,” says chef Kevin Gillespie with a laugh. In that case, it was only natural that when the restaurateur and his wife, Valerie, began the process of renovating their circa-1968 home, creating a highly functional yet entertaining-friendly kitchen was a top priority. “Finding a way to get the maximum amount of people to be able to congregate around the kitchen without actually being in the kitchen was one of the biggest things that informed the design decisions,” says Kevin. To that end, a floating island and an adjacent pass-through 46

window offer guests stagelike access to the kitchen without impeding the chef’s ability to cook. To create a sense of openness, the Gillespies limited upper cabinetry, instead building out larger lower cabinets—painted a striking inky blue (Sherwin-Williams Anchors Aweigh)—to keep clutter at bay without interrupting the line of sight into the space. Their size was also intended to counterbalance the chef’s heavy-duty equipment, which includes a customizable fivefoot sink by The Galley, windowed Sub-Zero fridge and Wolf range. Also part of this strategy were the “virtually indestructible” Neolith countertops in Iron Grey, a shade meant to look like patinated iron, which add a masculinity that plays off the industrial appliances. Even the floating island’s surface, though it appears to be wood, is actually Neolith. Modeled after a Lebanese cedar tree, the design

combines the durability of Neolith with the beauty and warmth of wood. “There are a lot of rooms where you can choose fashion over function, and the kitchen is not one of them,” notes Kevin. “Everything I put in the kitchen is extremely purpose-filled. We didn’t want to load our house up with equipment that we’d never use.” Even the adjoining sunroom was outfitted to accommodate guests and connect to the kitchen. A wet bar, inspired by the home’s original 1970s tiki bar, is conveniently located with easy access to the kitchen, serving as the perfect spot for guests to convene and enjoy a drink. “We wanted visitors to know that we built this house for people to feel comfortable and hang out in,” Kevin says. “And what better way to do that than to have a drink, sit down, have a conversation and be connected visually with the food made in the kitchen.”

RENOVATION OF THE MONTH

ITH STEVE AND HALA Moddelmog’s historic Ansley Park abode ringing in its 100th birthday, what better way to celebrate its centennial than highlighting the home’s century-old charms while revamping a late-in-life addition that offered little except eyesores and poorly appointed space. Cue decorator Alice Cramer and architect Caroline Rolader, who crafted a new wing with traditional elements that honor the past while employing modern conveniences. “We ripped off the 1980s addition, and Caroline designed a wonderful kitchen, butler’s pantry and bar with an area for a standing laptop station,” says Cramer, adding that Steve works from home, loves to cook, and wanted to combine those two things into a multifaceted work station. In addition to the kitchen, a family room, solarium, guest suite and garage were also built, adding an extra 400 square feet to the original 3,700-square-foot home. The improved, modern-leaning kitchen keeps things sleek and efficient, homing in on black elements, such as dark marble countertops, black stone floors from Materials Marketing and a Calhoun Design & Metalworks hood, offset by pale cabinets and walls. The open space looks into the newly designed, light-filled family room boasting a Roche Bobois leather sectional that’s reminiscent of a modern Parisian flat and adorned with Jim Thompson pillows. Another new addition was a covered solarium that’s both practical—providing a covered area to enter the house from the garage—and pretty— filled with cozy furnishings, such as a custom sofa and striped pillows from Stanton Home Furnishings, as well as views of the flourishing courtyard designed by Carson McElheney. “The addition of the solarium and garage created a wonderful opportunity for an intimate courtyard garden,” says McElheney. 50

The garden, which can also be viewed from both the family room and the kitchen, boasts a classic design and acts as an extension of the home. The Moddelmogs wanted a comfortable space to enjoy coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. They requested the water feature, which was created from an 1800s French stone trough and can be gently heard from the solarium. A path from the courtyard, paved with reclaimed wood-molded bricks, leads to the newly designed front garden and veranda. The entry garden boasts American boxwoods, which are true to the time period of the historic home and play a key role in anchoring the garden’s structure and form in relation to the facade. “I created a space that would showcase the garden and provide an axial relationship with the 52

entry columns,” says McElheney. “A wonderful book, Garden History of Georgia 1733–1933, contains illustrations of various boxwood parterres which complement the home. The ease and comfort of the space reflect the client’s wishes for a usable extension of their home.” Besides the marvelous makeover in the rear of the property, the heritage of the main house remains intact. The main areas, including the foyer, living room and dining room, were not altered, except for a fresh coat of paint on the cabinets and walls and staining of the hardwood floors. Throughout the process, McElheney was mindful of the original details that make the space unique, such as the artful plaster moldings, because while the new addition is sprouting with utility, the main home is rooted in history.

Architect Jeffrey Bruce Baker’s design for the 500-square-foot home includes two bathrooms with Toto fixtures; a kitchen with custom cabinetry from Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios, Miele appliances and an island; and two sleeping spaces. “The evolution in the U.S. of the tiny home has not been luxury. So now those elements are getting applied to it and getting a little more sophisticated design,” Baker says.

Baker collaborated with Resende Design & Marketing and Stone Center, which used Neolith emulating Calacatta Gold marble for the countertops, flooring, facade and exterior cladding. For the ADAC event, an outdoor entertaining area included Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. “Real estate is going up and up, and it’s very hard for millennials to have a nice place to live in the city. So the tiny house concept allows us to really be in a space that is going to be luxurious, but yet gives you what you need,” says Renata Diniz, president of Stone Center in Norcross.

MARCH 12, 2017 • ATLANTIC STATION WHEN I WAS A YOUNG HOSTESS IN THE 1970s, my entertaining repertoire was rather limited. Like most of my fellow Atlantans, I typically served Southern party fare—think pork or beef tenderloin, ham biscuits, tomato aspic and, every Christmas, Ambrosia. When I wanted to branch out and inject some European flair to my meals, I followed Julia Childs’ lead and cooked classic French dishes, such as boeuf bourguignon and Îles flottantes. And when I really wanted to go all-out, I did what many Southern hostesses did at the time and prepared chicken curry, served alongside an almost embarrassing number of condiments, like shredded coconut, crushed cashews, chopped apple and crumbled bacon. I believe many of us went the curry route when we felt like pulling out all of our sterling silver dishes and condiment bowls and displaying them en masse on our dining tables. For the most part, chicken curry was about as exotic as my youthful entertaining ever got. Today, however, the Atlanta style of entertaining has become increasingly diverse, a reflection of our city’s changing culture. Just the other day, a friend served me the Canadian specialty poutine, a baffling-to-me dish of French fries, cheese curds and gravy. And at a recent dinner party I attended, hosted by a quintessential Southern belle, it wasn’t shrimp and grits that was on the menu. Instead, it was Vietnamese caramelized shrimp, a recipe gleaned from a Vietnamese restaurant on Buford Highway. No world cuisine seems too exotic for today’s adventurous Atlanta cooks. Of course, this isn’t to say that Southern delicacies no longer grace our dining tables and cocktail buffets. Who doesn’t serve cheese straws or pimento cheese at cocktail get-togethers? Even canning—once the preserve of our Southern grandmothers—is enjoying a revival, if the popularity of the Preserving Place, located on the city’s Westside, is any indication. It seems that the more this city changes, the more we longtime Atlantans cherish its traditions. And, at a time when little of old Atlanta is left, I take great comfort in that.

Designer Melanie Turner transformed this The Ritz-Carlton Residences condominium into an ethereal haven,

TWENTY-SIX FLOORS ABOVE BUCKHEAD, where the sun and sky seemingly meet, interior designer Melanie Turner transformed a condominium into a little slice of heaven for a young family. Located in The Ritz-Carlton Residences, this luxe corner unit has no shortage of sweeping views. But for all of the condo’s outward appeal, Turner essentially began with a blank slate—and tight deadline—when it came to the interiors. “The only thing they had was a bed for the master bedroom, so we pretty much had to start from scratch,” she says. “Plus, with the lease on their rental almost up, they gave us a timeline of just 10 weeks.” Rising to the challenge, she and her team got right to work. Given the main living area’s long proportions, Turner broke up the space by creating a seating area at one end and a dining area at the other for a more structured and intimate layout. She defined the separate spaces with tailor-made furnishings from Bradley, a smart move considering the time constraint. “Ninety percent of the furniture in here is custom, which was a real benefit with our timeline,” says Turner, noting the often-dreaded wait times of factory-made items. “And best of all, it gave us the opportunity to create unique pieces that fit the space to a T. In many condos, there is not much architectural detailing, so by adding a piece of furniture that’s different or large in scale, it adds instant character.” 70

Custom powder-blue leather stools in the kitchen add punch to the space. right A small daybed on the balcony is perfect for outdoor lounging.

It’s Turner’s more subtle design details, though, that make this condo a standout. She devised a soft and ethereal color palette with pink and blue accents to complement the unit’s airy setting. “It’s incredibly dream-like. You feel like you’re in the clouds, so in turn I wanted the whole condo to feel like a pretty little jewel box,” says Turner. To play up this aesthetic, the living area’s ceiling features a powder-blue lacquer that reflects light for a beautiful effect. Other gleaming—and decidedly luxe—details include custom consoles in the foyer with pink stone accents and a steel-base soaking tub in the master bath that reflects the bold movement of the floor-to-ceiling marble. Also part of Turner’s vision for the condo was the family itself. She incorporated vintage lion sculptures in the dining area as a playful nod to the husband’s zodiac sign, Leo, while an adjacent reading nook for the wife offers a cozy spot to indulge her passion for reading. Best of all, the young daughter’s bedroom is a vibrant and fantastical refuge fit for a princess. “There’s purpose behind the beauty,” says Turner. “Our goal is to always create a home that captures the essence of those who live inside it.” See Resources, Back of Book. 73

“It was so much fun to work on this project, in large part because the clients were very involved in terms of pushing the envelope,” says designer Margaret Kirkland. A sizable modern painting over the sofa influenced the color palette of the kinetic living room. “They have a house in the California desert and go to a great art show every spring,” she says of the homeowners. “They come back with all kinds of fun finds.” In fact, the coral Rogers & Goffigon glazed linen used on the upholstery was largely inspired by their beloved California-cool vibes.

The dining area is uniďŹ ed with the living space thanks to an oversize area rug. Here, in addition to high-impact pieces, Kirkland added accents such as a pair of Mr. Brown by Julian Chichester speckled lamps procured from Holland & Company and a midcentury brass palm tree sculpture from Parc Monceau.

The unit’s entry walls were painted in a silver strie by Atlanta artist Brian Carter with a coordinating Phillip Jeffries paper on its ceiling for added drama, creating a chutelike effect as visitors pass through to the residence’s combined living-and-dining area. The large painting at right is a creative collage of family portraits. The graffiti-patterned fabric on the chair seat is Pierre Frey.

IT WAS A LITTLE MORE THAN A DECADE AGO when a fun-loving pair of retired empty nesters downsized from their Brookhaven family home to a light-filled condo at Buckhead’s Park Regency. At the time, they tapped Atlanta design doyen Dan Carithers to decorate, and the scheme was classically his. Margaret Kirkland, then an up-andcoming designer at Carithers’ company, assisted. Then, a few years after Kirkland founded her own firm, the lady of the house phoned, recalling Kirkland’s good taste and their excellent personal rapport. (Kirkland had first met the former floral designer at a friend’s wedding years before and has long remembered her as “the life of the party.”) When it came to their interiors, the septuagenarians, who love to entertain, essentially gave Kirkland carte blanche. “The husband was very clear,” she says. “He said, ‘I want you to make all the decisions, but they have to be the right ones.’ He said we had to have a definitive vision, and I said, ‘No problem.’ ”

The master bedroom retains much of Dan Carithers’ original touch, particularly in the upholstered walls, which buffer sound between this residence and the neighbors’. “My favorite change to this room was switching out a tall, dark antique linen press—because TVs don’t need to go in armoires anymore—and replacing it with a beautiful, leatherwrapped console from Thomas O’Brien,” Kirkland says.

Kirkland decided to swap their existing store of tomes with the vast collection of pottery previously installed at the homeowners’ mountain house. Here, the silhouettes pop against the rusty hue. This color also graces a group of vintage chairs in a Romo velvet. The wooden panels were sourced from The Signature in Buckhead. opposite, top to bottom The guest bedroom is the perfect

place for the homeowners’ grandchildren to enjoy brief respites. Previously chocolate brown with sisal flooring, this room has been refreshed with bright colors, contemporary art and plush wall-towall carpet. The bed skirt and window treatments were fashioned from a Peter Fasano fabric called Paperclips. Kirkland calls the original abstract pattern artist Brian Carter created for the master bathroom a kind of “noodling” effect. The couple loves the motif's uniqueness—and that they won’t have to worry about heat and moisture damage, as they might with a traditional wallcovering.

“I told them they were going to be like the Annenbergs, and Dan [Carithers] would definitely approve,” Kirkland adds of her tribute to the coral shades of Sunnylands, the famous Palm Springs estate near the the couple’s own California residence. “In our decorating changes, we would ask ourselves, ‘What would Dan think?’” The playful color payoff is apparent upon entering this modern residence, where visitors are greeted by a vibrant glass bowl that the husband commissioned from a favorite California artist. In the main volume of the apartment, color continues its reign. Kirkland’s go-to decorative painter, Brian Carter, created the swirling motifs in the master bath (in a shade matched to the wife’s nightgown) as well as the boundary-pushing geometric pattern in the living room. This room is anchored by a modern painting the couple picked up at a California art festival and features splashes of aqua, graffiti pillows by Pierre Frey and a plush rug that marries the space to the adjoining dining area. There, a slab of Cambria quartz tops a midcentury table surrounded by streamlined Lillian August armchairs. A quad of mod paintings by yet another Golden State talent accents the custom waterfall-edge console beyond. In the master, Kirkland kept the upholstered toile walls her former boss installed but updated the room with modern lighting, Jonathan Adler nightstands and a sleek desk that doubles as a dressing table. The guest bedroom, in contrast, received quite the refresh, its towering fourposter replaced by a headboard in poppy-hued Schumacher linen, with jaunty glass balloon sculptures mounted above. The handsome study bears many hallmarks of Kirkland’s touch, but the man of the house specifically requested the metallic pewter leather armchairs. “He wanted me to match his Gucci loafers,” the designer says. Chandelier, Arteriors. right “This was a try-something-new moment where we stepped out of the box,” says Howard in reference to the kitchen’s bleached-oak cabinetry. Knowing today’s popular all-white kitchen would feel out of place in this home, his design relied on creating a space infused with warmth. He used traditional-style barstools from the family’s former home and selected new metal Eccola light pendants overhead for contrast.

WHEN KEELY WOODALL BEGAN THE PROCESS of putting down roots along the Florida coast, she wanted to bring a piece of home with her. Her young family of four had recently relocated from Atlanta to Jacksonville, and she wasn’t quite ready to fully trade in her love of classic style for coastal. Rising to the challenge were Cronk Duch Architecture and Andrew Howard Interior Design. Although a new construction, the home’s exterior—a combination of stucco and brick with a shake roof—was designed with vintage charm and meant to be

88

reminiscent of homes in Atlanta. “The ultimate goal was to make it look like the home had been here for 30 or 40 years,” says interior designer Andrew Howard. The architectural plan called for the application of mortar over large swaths of brick to give the illusion it had been repainted over decades. The interiors hold an equally storied appeal but with a slightly more modern edge. “I wanted it to feel like a collected home that had recently been updated,” explains Howard. He incorporated antiques and vintage pieces from the Woodalls’ former residence

among new, custom furnishings to achieve his classic-meetsrefreshed aesthetic. For example, a midcentury sideboard mixes comfortably with whimsical draperies in the bold blue-lacquered dining room, while the family’s beloved green leather chairs add a pop of color in the white oak–paneled family room. “You don’t want to move into a new house and have all new stuff. That can quickly make it feel like a furniture showroom,” says Howard. “As a designer, I think we would be doing our clients a disservice if we walk in and dictate what stays and what goes, as 89

Howard.indd 89

11/29/16 7:22 PM

there’s memories attached to certain pieces. Rather, my philosophy is ‘let’s plan and see how these things can coexist in a room as the project develops.’ It’s all about give and take for all parties.” This rings especially true in the daughter’s bedroom, which came with a request that it be coral and purple. To prevent the space from becoming overwhelming, Howard presented a softer salmon color that appeased everyone and provided the backdrop 90

for a purple chair, making for a happy daughter and designer. “This project was more about a relationship than decorating, and I think every house for me is that way,” says Howard. “I want this to be a fun process, not something everybody loses sleep over. I believe that the best homes are created by developing a friendship with your client. If I see Keely and her family out at lunch, you can bet we’re all happy to see each other.” See Resources, Back of Book.

right Howard fulfilled Keely’s directive of creating a combination of light and dark rooms throughout the home by wrapping her office in a deep-blue lacquer. A custom rug featuring pops of pink and magenta adds balance to the space. left With oversize Hickory sofas to match the room’s long proportions, the formal living room was designed for entertaining. However, Howard was mindful to keep fabrics and other elements practical. “With kids, everything is fair game. LIFE

S U Z A N N A H A M I LT O N

Westward, Whoa!

I

’M NOT ONE FOR ELABORATE New Year’s resolutions. I’ve had the same one every year: to be dull and boring. It’s not that I aspire to be oafish; I just don’t want drama. Unfortunately, I fail every year. In 2016, I tangled with a cactus and a black widow spider, and in 2012, I had a nasty altercation with a scorpion. But no year held as much drama as 2010, when I moved from bucolic Buckhead to the disequilibrium of Los Angeles. More arduous than bushwhacking adventure travel, moving to LA remains a daily tragicomedy that initially left me vulnerable but has since provided endless amusement. Whisked from the lush landscapes and tree-canopied neighborhoods of Atlanta, I found Los Angeles to be a concrete sea of 10 million people and one palm tree. Gone were the charms of gentle Southern manners, and with them, the towering river oaks, grand magnolias, graceful dogwoods and pear trees. In their place, the thin carpets of Astroturf found

104

on Melrose have proven to be as deep as most friendships I’ve forged, where homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese have been met with a combination of horror and confusion! While the fear of getting fat is far more terrifying to Angelenos than either of the 2016 presidential candidates, I, on the other hand, have developed a celebrity-driven dependency on the McDonald’s on Sunset Boulevard. It is, after all, the only easy-access, rush-hour option—and, after having consumed one demitasse cup of green tea and three unsalted almonds during said celebrity interview, that beef-whatever patty is somethin’ special. Oh, how I miss an Henri’s mayonnaise sandwich! Of course, Atlanta is not perfection, nor is Los Angeles a vast desert of vanity. Like most things in life, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Both cities parallel and repel; I’ve come to appreciate their idiosyncrasies. We just endured the most polarizing presidential election in U.S. history, so how jolting could a Southerner in Hollywood be?

Our new back-page columnist, Suzanna Cullen Hamilton, a current Angeleno and homesick Southerner, sends musings from the Left Coast.
