ALMOST EVERY DAY, I STARE AT the blank wall in my family room. Since we moved in (three years ago last month), I’ve been talking about investing in a work of art by one of my favorite American artists. It’s a serigraph, coincidentally from by birth year. Because nothing else—in my own mind, at least—will do for that space, I’ve left it bare (for the time being, at least). Make a statement, or make it disappear. When I interviewed interior designer Barbara Westbrook about a clients’ Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, residence recently (see page 54), she spoke about the importance of using “pieces with power,” a concept she learned during her time with Nancy Braithwaite. Taken literally, pieces with power (I’ve learned from many a photo shoot), are can’t-budge heavy, made from real, voluminous materials, whether it’s the handcarved walnut base of a table or a chest with a Carrara marble top. In the metaphorical sense, pieces with power are furnishings or accessories that might double as a work of art because of their hand-crafted nature. Powerful pieces create visual impact even when standing alone and convey a narrative, whether that item is an antique or brand-new. I like to think of Atlanta’s top interior designers as modern day patrons of the arts. Whether it’s a custom-designed metal hood, a hand-blown glass pendant light or a hand-painted wallcovering, it’s the level of detail involved, on a highly personal level, that makes my job so delightful. The projects featured in this issue are just that—delightful, and each for different reasons, be it subtle beauty, bold color, fashionable Elizabeth Ralls flair or high contrast. A spirited take on the classics, BURNHAM DESIGN’s debut collection, Wardrobe, takes its name from the tailoring of fabrics found in Betsy Burnham’s own closet—denim, twill, linen, heather grey wool and chambray. We’re partial to the midcenturyinspired Golightly chair, though we also love that each piece is handcrafted in her home state of California and named for characters in her favorite films. wardrobebyburnhamdesign.com
Curve Appeal
Understated elegance forms the foundation of celebrated Los Angeles designer MADELINE STUART’s design ethos, so it’s little surprise that the freshest debut from her eponymous furniture and lighting collection is the chic and streamlined Wilson swivel chair. A contemporary classic with a continuous, curved base in rift oak highlighted by nailhead trim, ultimately its strength lies in its subtle complexity. Available to the

Known for its high-quality, handcrafted pottery, R. WOOD STUDIO introduces Carr’s Hill, a new line of versatile tableware, just in time for the studio’s 25th anniversary—and holiday entertaining. Available in two neutral hues, sky and cotton, the collection includes salad and dinner plates, a sugar and creamer set and a selection of cups and mugs, all of which are handmade by celebrated artist Rebecca Wood in her Athens, Georgia-based studio. rwoodstudio.com
BETWEEN THE LINES A lifelong love of all things nautical inspired textile aficionado CLAY MCLAURIN’s fifth collection of fabrics, a grounding selection of stripes intended to complement his blossoming line of patterns and prints. With six patterns, seven hues and 17 total SKUs, the new-for-fall Belgian linens work best in large-scale applications such as curtains or a high-back chair. Having studied Jacquard weaving at Rhode Island School of Design, McLaurin endeavored to mimic woven effects with his fiber-reactive dye prints, resulting in Band (based on rope), Dash (interrupted lines), Ikat (hairlines and smudges), Twine (a near-glen plaid inspired by interlacing fibers) and Drift (drawn from the lines a sailboat makes along water). International Influence Wholesale furniture and home accessory retailer EUROPE2YOU, founded by husband-and-wife duo Joseph and Stacy Borocz, has established itself as a go-to source for international design pieces, thanks to an impressive stock of antique and vintage products imported from Europe. Once accessible only to the trade, the brand, whose flagship showroom is located in AmericasMart, makes its foray into retail with the freshly launched ETÚHOME, a curated collection of repurposed, antiques-inspired home products. Inventory includes clean-lined furniture built from reclaimed timber and kitchen accessories made with wood salvaged from 19th-century European buildings. With a nod to European antiques and contemporary tastes, each design serves as a reminder that sustainability and quality are just as important as beauty and aesthetics. etuhome.com

DEAR KEATON MAINTAINING THAT POST-VACATION FEELING is always a challenge, but design-loving Atlantans CHRISTIE SHEPARD and CHRIS HUTCHESON are seeking to permanently engage that blissful state of mind with the launch of their online marketplace, Dear Keaton. The name, a playful nod to the nostalgia of a hand-written postcard penned while traveling, enables these two shelter-industry veterans to share inspired textures, sensibilities and aesthetics from destinations around the globe, but in a highly personal, fair-trade kind of way. Conceptualized after returning from their own vacations—feeling rejuvenated and looking for their next adventure (both personally and professionally)—Shepard and Hutcheson’s ultimate goal with Dear Keaton was to not only help others create the look of a well-traveled home, but also engage artisans in a sustainable way. From furnishings with tantalizing textures (think an X-bench topped with vintage Moroccan wedding blanket) to chic caftans, totes and jewelry, the meaningful-meets-relaxed vibe of this Atlanta start-up is downright dreamy. dearkeaton.com 24

ESIGNER TERI DUFFY’S LONGTIME appreciation for Asian antiques piqued when she saw the collection of rare and exquisite pieces scattered throughout her client’s Sandy Springs bungalow. She couldn’t believe her luck, because stacked in his living room was a complete set of 10 door panels carved with floral motifs that convey meanings such as longevity and good fortune. Duffy’s vision for a contemporary, Asianinfluenced bungalow evolved from those 10-foottall panels and other antiques in his collection, some of which are 1,000 years old. She unfolded the screens, believed to be from the 18th century, and gave them the prominence they deserved by stretching them out in front of the windows. “The screens alone just really captured my emotions,” says Duffy, owner of T. Duffy & Associates. “We painted a clean palette so that all of these very rich antiques would step forward visually.”

Throughout the bungalow, which also boasts an Asian-influenced garden, she consciously edited the 18th-century furniture and paintings from the Ming dynasty that homeowner David Markovich researched and purchased while on business in China for two years. Duffy selected each piece with a purpose—and to make a statement. In the living room, the 8-foot-high ceilings were raised to 12 feet to accommodate the spectacular screens. White walls reinvigorate the once-dark room to focus attention on the screens, painted beams, wood details and carved Chinese furniture. New Noir burlap chairs, a linen sofa and silk lavender pillows provide a neutral backdrop for the scaled-down compilation of Asian antiques. This marriage of antiques and modern elements continues throughout the bungalow. “All of this was his collection,” Duffy says. “I just took it a step further, so that it would show up and give it a more fresh, contemporary blend.”

are being [bought] by people who are just moving to Atlanta. They’re only living in them three to five years and then move onto another city or another neighborhood. People who are in the neighborhood temporarily are having a permanent effect on the character and well-being of the neighborhood. WHAT BUILDINGS ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT? We feel very nervous about the Spring Hill funeral home [designed by Philip Trammell Shutze in 1928 on 3.5 acres in Midtown]. We’re also concerned about Mimosa Hall in Roswell. It has gone up for sale with no protection. That was an antebellum house that Neel Reid lived in. He designed the garden. DO YOU THINK THE PUBLIC IS LOSING POWER IN THESE FIGHTS? Atlanta just doesn’t have the public policy toward saving buildings; we lack the strong laws that encourage historic preservation. The only strategy we really have is public opinion and public involvement.

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham LATELY, IT SEEMS THAT I’VE BEEN SPENDING a lot of time at some of Atlanta’s most prominent examples of midcentury modern architecture. It’s easy to overlook these gems, especially since so much new architecture has been built over the past few decades. But despite the appeal of newer structures, I still have a soft spot in my heart for these now-classic modern buildings, which remind me of a time when Atlanta was just on the cusp of becoming a booming metropolis. The first stop on my informal architectural tour was AmericasMart, where I spent two full days attending the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market. As you well know, Market is a mecca for home furnishings, with much to see and do. But while there, do you ever stop to appreciate the architecture of the buildings, designed in the early 1960s by legendary architect John Portman? If not, you should, because doing so will help you to understand just what a visionary Portman is. A few days later, I found myself dining at Colony Square, designed by architects Jova/Daniels/Busby in the late ’60s. With its condominiums, office spaces, restaurants, dry cleaner, and post office, it was the original live-work-play environment, long before live-work-play became a thing. Strolling through its atrium, I was reminded of how cutting-edge this complex once was—and how chic it remains. Next, it was on to the Peachtree Battle branch of Bank of America, where I have banked for the last 30 years (since it was a C&S bank, in fact.) Stuck in a slow-moving line, I had the time to do something that I don’t often do: appreciate the interior architecture, which, to me, screams 1960s. Or maybe it’s early ’70s. Anyway, the building’s bland exterior is a minus, to be sure, but nevertheless this bank is a nostalgia piece, taking us back to a time when Buckhead felt more like a small town. What’s next on my architectural excursion? I’m not sure, but I’d better figure it out quickly. Soon, what little is left of old Atlanta is likely to be gone with the wind. 47

WHEN IT COMES TO ATLANTA’S HIGHRISE REAL ESTATE, very few residential properties boast the kind of square footage—nor the 360-degree views—afforded by the full-floor residences at the Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta. Freshly built-out by architect Robert Tretsch of Harrison Design, this particular four-bedroom condominium, measuring more than 5,000 square feet (not counting a pair of terraces), was snapped up
56
by interior designer Barbara Westbrook’s ultra-discerning clients as a chic, cosmopolitan home-away-from-home for a vibrant family with three young adult sons. After falling for Westbrook’s timelessly tailored, subtle glamour—brought to life in the form of a decorated model unit on site—the wife interviewed (and promptly hired) the designer by phone to oversee the build-out and design of this sweeping Buckhead residence. An artist in her own right, the wife, who has worked with a celebrated West Coast designer on previous residences, holds a genuine appreciation for craftsmanship and artisanship. “She understands that craft, whether you’re an interior designer or a painter, is how you make a living,” says Westbrook. “It’s not just a passion, but a livelihood, and we really honed in on that.” To further foster that sense of respect, the wife looked to engage both Atlanta and Southern artists to enliven their lofty space, procuring a significant collection of sketches, silver-gelatin prints, photographs and sculpture from Radcliffe Bailey, Angela West, Brian Coleman, Todd Murphy, Maren Kloppman, Jack Spencer and the Moulthrop family, to name a few.

While Westbrook admits these investments were more intuitive than purchased with a particular space in mind, the unit’s architectural envelope—think rounded walls and vestibules, and ample hallways—provided a gallery-like backdrop for proud display. To pay further tribute to the art of the craft, even the designer’s furniture selections were purchased with authenticity in mind. Pieces such as Caste’s rounded coffee table in the living room, whose hand-carved walnut base and Carrara-marble top make it difficult to budge, add a pleasing volume to the lofty space, while hand-blown glass pieces, such as the John Pomp pendants in the kitchen, and the seeded glass chandelier by Coup Studio in the breakfast room, create a truly bespoke feel. Choosing pieces with power—a concept Westbrook learned early in her career at the hand of Atlanta design legend Nancy Braithwaite—was indeed of great importance in this project, to both the clients and the designer. Despite a predominantly neutral palette, the beauty of even the most voluminous, masculine-skewing elements—such as Jean de Merry’s ebonized Soho table with geometric base and antiqued mercury top, used as a bedside table in the master bedroom—feel feminine in form. 59

To be fair, feminine details also abound in the unit, though primarily in the unit’s more private places. Westbrook Interiors project designer Elizabeth Hanson worked hand-in-hand with the architect and contractors to carve out a separate dressing area in the master suite for the wife. A custom, pencil-drawn pattern, rendered on a white glazed silk Fromental wallpaper, envelops the space, while a Powell & Bonnell dressing table and mirror up the glam factor. The formal powder room is also a visual feast, thanks
to a large-scale Phillip Jeffries bloom, hand-painted in India ink on white manila hemp ground. “Great thought went into each and every piece, even the simplest pieces,” Westbrook says. And, as expected, the clients’ enthusiasm also parlayed into the designer’s own work. “When we wrapped the project with the client, and a glass of wine, she told us she had the chicest apartment in Atlanta,” Westbrook smiles. Indeed. See Resources, Back of Book. 63

FASHION RULES THE ROOST IN THIS MIDTOWN CONDO, where a spectrum of fabrics and furnishings pops against sleek fixtures and finishes. While the loft was a downsize for homeowners Jeffrey and Felix, a dynamic couple who love to entertain, the limited square footage did nothing to deter designers Bill Musso and Seth van den Bergh of MUSSO from making the most of the 1,650-square-foot space. Inspired by their clients’ penchant for fashion and all things stylish, Musso and van den Bergh set out to create a contemporary interpretation of 1970s glamour and Miami chic. “From the beginning, we all were in sync in what we wanted to achieve: a dramatic, sexy place where you can expect the unexpected,” says Musso. The duo began by adjusting the floor plan and shifting walls to open up flow and provide plenty of room for entertaining. Formerly located on the farthest end of the condo, the kitchen, a collaborative project with Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, was shifted to the center of the space to take its rightful place as the heart of the home. To keep from competing with the vibrancy of the adjoining spaces, the design dream team selected neutral finishes and clean-lined cabinetry, which also provide plenty of storage and keep clutter at bay. 69

To that end, much like the format of an art gallery, white walls (Sherwin-Williams’ Pure White) and floors serve as a fresh backdrop for the glamorous furnishings decorating the condo’s public spaces. “The white gave us a chance to highlight certain things without feeling complicated,” notes van den Bergh. “Budgets and small spaces encourage thoughtful editing. That’s what I think really makes this a strong unit.” This artistic balance is evident in rooms such as the dining 72
area and den, which exude a laid-back elegance thanks to jewel tones, lush fabrics and gold accents. Eye-catching artwork from the clients’ own collection is also a staple throughout the condo, including a creative gallery wall of portraits depicting some of Jeffrey’s inspirational figures, including Betsey Johnson, Alexander McQueen and Grace Coddington. Musso and van den Bergh continued this playful palette in the living room, where a lacquered aubergine wall and canopy des-

ignate the space. A punchy photograph by Nicolas Bets, paneled mirrors and custom furniture give off the feel of a sleek cocktail lounge, while layers of textured fabrics and thoughtful accessories add coziness and comfort. “They wanted it to have this energy of living in the city—almost like you could have plucked it out of Miami—yet also be comfortable,” notes van den Bergh. It’s this deliberate editing that allows the home to accommodate the clients’ modern tastes without skewing too cold or too busy.
“I think one of the most rewarding things was when Bill and I did sort of an open stage reveal with the clients,” says van den Bergh. “Talk about seeing yourself really change someone’s life.” Yet Jeffrey and Felix weren’t the only ones satisfied with the final product. “It’s always rewarding when people love what you do,” Musso agrees. “But at the end of the day, to finally see something come to fruition and have everything fit how we expected it to fit—we wouldn’t have done anything differently.” See Resources, Back of Book. 73

WHEN KRISTIN KONG RECEIVED AN UNEXPECTED email from Singapore inquiring about her interior design services, she assumed it was a spam message. Little did she know the correspondence would lead to a bright and playful project for Bill and Georgia Wharton, a pair of expats returning to the States after more than a decade abroad. “During our first conversation, they shared that they loved wallpaper and color, making it a fun project from day one,” Kong says. The 4,000-square-foot Peachtree Battle home had great interior bones, so Kong, who spent a decade in commercial design, joyfully jumped headfirst into furnishing its wide-open spaces. She selected unique wallcoverings and a spirited color palette for each room, making them feel fluid while keeping each distinct. The home’s entry boasts vantage points of the living room and kitchen, so Kong embraced its white shiplap-sided stairwell and pale gray walls (painted Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak) as a launching point 77

for the pattern-fueled rooms throughout the house. The living room is electrifying, thanks to Zoffany’s amethysthued Umi wallpaper that resembles waves of watercolors. The bold print is balanced by a neutral velvet BSC Coco sofa and Bernhardt’s Jet Set coffee table with a sleek brass-plated finish. The space also includes treasures from the Whartons’ extensive art collection, including the pop painting Lick My Ear, featuring the Queen of England on a stamp by English artist Piers Bourke, whom the Whartons met while living in Singapore. The open floor plan allows the living room to seamlessly transition into the dining room, where Harlequin’s geometric ivory-andmustard-hued Sumi pattern covers the walls. To keep the space elegant yet eclectic, Potocco’s Grace chairs were upholstered in Beacon Hill’s lively Annina silk/linen print and Duralee velvet. The home’s fluid layout extends into the light-filled kitchen. Once again, pattern was crucial, so Kong chose a modern wallcov-
ering, Phillip Jeffries’ Zephyr. The contemporary print pairs well with a Lee Industries Apartment Sofa upholstered in Beacon Hill’s dreamy Soo Locks fabric. “I love mixing the geometric print from the walls with the expressionist-like fabric on the couch,” Kong says about the kitchen nook. “The juxtaposition of pattern is key.” The personalities of the home’s occupants continue to stand out. The library, which used to sport uninspiring brown paneling, was painted a semigloss blue (Benjamin Moore’s Patriot Blue) to create a loungelike library for Bill, complete with books, records and antique mirrors. Even 11-year-old son Kipp had a style vision for his bedroom, which is anchored with a custom map wallcovering. “The family was really interested in design and brought their own perspectives and worldliness to the project,” Kong says. “That’s the secret to style: The home should reflect the personality of the people who live there.” See Resources, Back of Book. 81

STEP INSIDE THIS HIGH-CONTRAST home and it becomes apparent that simplicity can indeed make a statement—and a striking one at that. “I strive for soothing, nothing fussy or over the top,” says interior decorator Shawn Broaddus, who along with contractor Mike Hammersmith transformed the home’s dated aesthetic into a chic dwelling fit for its new, young homeowners. “They’re a very hip couple who travel often and stay at hotels where they see a lot of great design. This made them open to unique ideas,” she explains. Given carte blanche to design the interiors, Broaddus proceeded to give every room in the home a face-lift—most notably the kitchen, which previously had an inefficient layout and bright yellow walls. A complete overhaul resulted in a fresh and vibrant space that emphasizes clean lines and warm undertones. The sleek brass hood and equally striking waterfall-edge island showcase Broaddus’ knack for mixing materials in a subtle yet showstopping manner. 87
Broaddus.indd 87
8/23/16 7:36 PM
Elsewhere, she asked Hammersmith to strip away the orange, brown and purple granite from the home’s floor-to-ceiling fireplaces to make way for more modern textures, such as high-gloss concrete tile and cast aluminum. “I come up with these insane ideas, and Mike can always make it happen. He’s genius,” says Broaddus. Hammersmith also oversaw the creation of a new master wing on the second floor. By absorbing an unused bedroom, he granted the young couple’s requests for extra-large closets and a spa-like bath. As with all of Broaddus’ projects, collaboration is key. Given the home’s lofty proportions, most ready-made furniture was out of the question. Therefore, she worked with Amy Wikman of Björk Studio and Sarah Atkinson of Grey Furniture to custom design nearly ev88
ery piece of furniture in the home, from the black alpaca fur headboard in the master bedroom to the walnut-and-acrylic office desk and even smaller accents, such as sculptural side tables. “You’re not going to see these pieces in anyone else’s home, and that’s important to me in being authentic in my work,” says Broaddus. “The home is grand but in a cool way,” she adds. “It’s fresh and modern and luxurious but not at all uncomfortable or intimidating. There’s a peacefulness to it. You want to sit in those plush dining room chairs or run your hand across the fox fur throw on the bed. My hope was to draw you in and make you want to relax with a cocktail or two, and I think I achieved that.” Drinks, anyone? See Resources, Back of Book.

LIFE
MARCIA SHERRILL
MARCIA’S FAVORITE PLACES
THE LIVING ROOM
Marcia on the evolution of the most formal room in the house, from “look-but-don’ttouch” status space to a fabulously functional area actually designed not only to be “lived in,” but also fully equipped for red-wine drinking and everyday entertaining.
R
AISE YOUR HAND IF YOU GREW UP IN A HOUSE in which the living room was used strictly for “company.” I’ve always wondered—who is this mysterious “company?” Certainly not our relatives, who crowded the kitchen like starving bison. Definitely not the neighbors, who parked themselves, for hours on end, on our comfy sofas for afternoons of Alabama football. Yes, our living room was used only for Christmas morning and the occasional wedding shower. When we grew up, we maintained those same habits. The living room? It was darn near forbidden territory. Today, however, it’s open season for living rooms. No lon104
ger the province of an unknown “company,” we’re beginning to live a little in our living rooms, designing them to be both beautiful and functional (what a concept!). As a designer, I’ve taken this message to heart. I ditched my “look-but-don’t-touch” attitude and, with it, my design inhibitions. Sure, I may have decked that room out like it was a show pony—think faux-zebra furs over sisal rugs, and striking prints hung next to vintage animal mounts. But now, we have a room that is showroom and gathering place. Yes, neighbors and relatives make a mess from time to time, but guess what? Like a kitchen, it’s designed to withstand the heat.
