Former director of old-guard British firm Colefax & Fowler, decorator Veere Grenney specializes in interiors that blend comfort with charm, practicality with beauty. In Veere Grenney: A Point of View (Rizzoli, $65), readers join him on a journey from early influences to the formation of his foundation for imaginative interiors.

French decorator Jacques Garcia provides an intimate tour of the 17th-century masterpiece Château de Villette (Rizzoli, $75) after a painstaking restoration of the historic house and gardens to their original splendor. SUSAN

FERRIER

Known for interiors that are compelling and commanding, the designer forges a seriously sensuous mark on the residential scene

A native New Yorker, Ferrier earned her degree in Fine Arts before cutting her teeth at commercial design firm BrooksBurr. A natural programmer, she worked her way from intern to project manager in three years. Overseeing the build-out of a 100,000-square-foot law firm in Washington, D.C. proved foundational to Ferrier’s success: “It was great training; I learned that you have to be direct, honest and solution-oriented.”

Tides of Change

Having become skilled as a visual mathematician, Ferrier sought to harness those spatial strengths into not just function, but form; her pursuit of beauty ultimately led her to the office of Alabama architect Bobby McAlpine, where she would devote herself to building its multicity interiors business for the next 18

two decades. There, she developed “a great love for not only architecture but the architect as a personality,” she says. “I’ve been very fortunate that it’s given me a wonderful foundation into the way they think.”

Synchronicity

Ferrier has become so adept at playing with scale and proportion, and lights and darks, that her interiors could be characterized as intrepid. Confidently and fearlessly, she employs intriguing, overscale treasures against a moody palette for an effect that is part tranquility, part theater. The luxuriously layered master bedroom she designed for the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, opposite, conveys a perspective that sacrifices neither style nor beauty in its quest to create the ultimate creature comforts. In April, after nearly 20 years with McAlpine, the designer and her all-female team

formulated Susan Ferrier Interiors, opening up shop on the ground floor of the 1925 Druid Hills residence that Ferrier and husband Adrian call home. Here, the team services residential projects ranging from a family compound in Naples, Florida, and a lakefront family property in Wisconsin to atmospheric retreats in Austin, Texas, Alys Beach, Florida, and England. “When you are in a partnership, it requires certain commitment and energy … none of us do it alone, and when you find a group of like-minded people, that’s where your investment needs to be,” says Ferrier of her dedication to her creative team.

What’s Next

This month, Ferrier unveils an evocative new website, susanferrierinteriors.com; travels to India for inspiration and treasure-hunting; and begins planning the annual Philip T. Shutze awards, an event she will co-chair next spring for the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Southeast Chapter.

MARQUETRY

From some of the most powerful empires in history to today’s laser-cut printers, this delicate decoration adds distinctive and artful enhancement Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

ORIGINS

Straw marquetry by Alexander Lamont adds a fresh spin to the Kertas Console, top, and Seine boxes, above; both are available at Jean de Merry in Dallas. The Althorp Collection butterfly table with marquetry, by Theodore Alexander, is through Mathews Furniture + Design. The walnut and pearwood marquetry commode is from Robuck.

20

In simple terms, marquetry is the application of thin veneers to a solid surface to create decoration. However, the history of marquetry is as lengthy as the materials used. Artifacts from ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire reveal that the practice of applying decoration to objects has transcended millennia and geography. King Tutankhamun’s tomb and the ruins of Pompeii offered furniture and decorative objects of applied veneer decoration. Architectural ruins in Rome attest to the widespread use of marquetry in marble floors and buildings. Although not abundant during the Middle Ages, it became popular during the Italian Renaissance, and soon spread throughout Europe and the United Kingdom.

In the mid-17th century, the French Manufacture des Gobelins created marquetry pieces for Versailles, thereby catapulting floral designs to popularity. However, it was André-Charles Boulle who was renowned as the “jeweler of marquetry,” and whose masterful ability to inlay exotic materials such as tortoiseshell, pewter and brass into ebony that made him the favorite ébéniste of the Sun King, and whose works are now in the Louvre Museum.

CHARACTERISTICS & CONSTRUCTION Unlike inlay, which involves laying wood into other cut wood, the materials used for marquetry are diverse: bone, shell, mother of pearl and wood are some of the many popular materials used on furniture, boxes and decorative objects. Originally, the veneers were hand-cut with a knife, but today a fret or scroll saw is more common. The thin layers are then glued to a surface to create decorative patterns or pictures, and thin layers of varnish are applied repeatedly to seal the design.

MASS MARKET Today, marquetry flourishes as artisans fashion new ways to form and apply designs. Laser-cut printers have increased the ease and speed in cutting complex designs. From artists to manufacturers, marquetry continues to be applied as a showstopping element that stands apart from the masses.

THE BATTERY ATLANTA

SPORTS SCENE

Venue Vision

ATLANTA’S THREE MAJOR SPORTS VENUES are making it easier for fans to linger before or after a game. Burn by Rocky Patel and Hector Santiago’s El Super Pan are the most recent additions to The Battery Atlanta, adjacent to SunTrust Park. Silverspot Cinema is expected to open in late 2019 with Savi Provisions (plus a Jittery Joe’s coffee shop) in early 2020. Also slated are Overton’s, a water sports and marine accessories dealer, and Rock/Creek, which sells outdoor gear. Philips Arena’s $192.5 million transformation is expected to be unveiled this month. The HOK-designed renovation includes Zac Brown’s Social Club, a Killer Mike’s SWAG Shop barbershop and Topgolf Swing Suite. “The ability to partner with Zac Brown and Killer Mike, who are both passionate about the city of Atlanta and wanted to create these

PHILLIPS ARENA

amazing destinations inside Philips Arena for the fans, is special,” Atlanta Hawks Basketball Club CEO Steve Koonin says. “How Topgolf has merged the premium experience of play, music, sports and dining into a social phenomenon … aligns well with the vision for our arena.” Tailgating takes on a new location, and style, with The Home Depot Backyard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, an 11-acre green space with amenities, catering and concierge services. The stadium’s artistic bent continues, with a 35-foot-tall mirrored soccer ball sculpture by London’s Studio Roso as a focal point.

MEGA

MANSION

OPULENT AND OVERSIZE LIVING IS FOR SALE AGAIN. The 34,688-square-foot French provincial mansion previously owned by Tyler Perry was priced this fall for $25 million, topping the most expensive residential listings in metro Atlanta. “The size and scale of the property are certainly unparalleled in the Atlanta market, as is the quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail in construction,” says real estate agent Chase Mizell with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty. Perry sold the estate at 4110 Paces Ferry Road NW to evangelist David Turner in 2016 for $17.5 million, which also was a record. The home, built in 2007, features seven bedrooms, nine full and five partial baths on 17 acres. With two gated entrances and resort-style amenities, including an infinity pool and indoor pool, lighted tennis court, gym, wine cellar and underground ballroom, the home has attracted the interest of Fortune 100 CEOs, self-made entrepreneurs and musicians. 24

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham DO YOU REMEMBER HOW WILD AND WACKY contemporary design could be back in the 1980s and early ’90s? If you recall, there was Memphis, the Italian Postmodern design movement that resulted in some rather outlandish furniture. Described by one critic as “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price,” Memphis furniture was colorful and crazy, which, looking back, meant it was perfect for that more-is-more decade. Mind you, the style wasn’t for everyone, but it did catch on among some adventurous types, such as fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who filled his Monaco apartment with Memphis furniture. (Today, it’s the trendsetting designer Kelly Wearstler collecting it.) Also making waves during the ’80s were Garouste & Bonetti, two French designers whose so-called “Barbarian” style took prehistoric and ancient forms and made them electrifying. They designed chairs that looked like they had horns sprouting from their backs and applied flame motifs to curtains and carpets. Surreal and even baroque, their work was championed by couturier Christian Lacroix, whose own sometimes outré designs—it was he who was responsible for the 1980s’ most infamous fashion trend, the pouf skirt—also came to epitomize that go-go decade. Then there was the design provocateur Philippe Starck, who is still going strong today and whose acrylic Louis Ghost chair has become a classic. And we can’t forget Pee-wee’s Playhouse, the late ’80s television show whose fun house set echoed the off-the-wall design trends of the time. By the mid 1990s, anything outrageous or off-kilter became yesterday’s news, and both traditional and modern design went tame, quiet and neutral, which, in hindsight, was not such a bad thing. Although nostalgia for the ’80s has become a thing lately, I am not pining for a room decorated in Fisher-Price fashion; as it has for decades, quietly confident design remains my preference. But I do think it might be time to welcome a little whimsy and eccentricity back into the design fold. After all, life’s too short to be serious all of the time. Care to join me in bringing back the pouf skirt?

ATING BACK TO THE EARLY 1920S, Atlanta’s infamous Clermont Hotel reinvented itself earlier this year, emerging as the renovated Hotel Clermont after closing in 2009. Owned by Oliver Hospitality and managed by Charlestowne Hotels, the new hotel pays homage to its origins around every corner, and its in-house restaurant, Tiny Lou’s, is no exception. Led by executive chef Jeb Aldrich and Hotel Clermont director of restaurants Nick Hassiotis, the French-American concept is managed by Charleston’s Indigo Road Hospitality Group, which also owns Atlanta’s O-Ku and Donetto. Named after a dancer at the original Clermont Motor Hotel, the 100-seat restaurant is as playful as it is chic, showcasing pink velvet banquettes, splashy wallpaper and a retro neon sign denoting its name. The menu takes the same approach, comprised of elegant, French-inspired dishes which also showcase a good dose of fun. Aldrich focuses on local ingredients and incorporates Southern accents into his dishes, which span from hors d’oeuvres and vegetables to meat and seafood—think Blue Ridge trout almondine, steak frites and gnocchi Parisienne. And don’t skip dessert, which, crafted by pastry chef Claudia Martinez, is as inventive and colorful as the Hotel Clermont itself. tinylous.com

THEY SAY GOOD THINGS COME to those who wait, and in the case of this cozymeets-modern lake home, this sentiment couldn’t be truer. Plans for the homeowners’ Lake Keowee home were being drafted pre-recession and once the economic slowdown hit they decided to press the pause button and be patient. “The homeowners really wanted to do this project right and were willing to wait a few years for things to pick back up,” recalls the home’s architect, Timothy S. Adams. That doesn’t mean the home was ever far from their minds, though. During that downtime, the husband meticulously built a stick model of the entire lake home based off Adams’ plans. “It was really impressive. He’s incredibly detail-oriented and this labor of love was really a testament to the project,” says Adams. “He brought the model to us and said, ‘I can’t wait to build this house.’” The wait was undoubtedly worth it. Almost eight years after pen was first put to paper, the couple was ready to welcome 39

friends and family to their lakeside dwelling. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a cozy foyer with stone flooring that serves to blur the lines between indoors and out. Then down the steps, the home’s unique architecture begins to reveal itself. A charming interior window gives a peek inside the vaulted family room, while the nearby kitchen and dining room are more intimate in scale. “It’s not a big house, but the layout gives it character and that quality of an old home where you come in and experience it as you move through it,” says Adams. “Essentially, we wanted it to look like a cottage that has stood the test of time, but has been updated with a fresh perspective.” To capture this feeling, the homeowners called upon interior designer Barbara Westbrook. Along with project designer Kim Winkler, Westbrook employed a palette of neutral tones to complement the home’s natural surroundings and balanced a mix of antiques and more modern pieces, a design formula none more apparent than in the family room where clean-lined wing chairs sit across from a pair of well-loved leather chairs. “It was really indicative of the play

Soft Focus Westbrook aimed for a lighter and brighter feel in the master bedroom while also abiding by her design philosophy that “bedrooms should always feel a bit more elegant than the rest of the home. She achieved this with delicate accents and antique pieces. on textures needed,” says Westbrook. “This is a modern house with some patina to it.” She also lent her creative touch to the kitchen, where a handmade Moroccan tile backsplash gives the neutral space a dose of glimmer, and in the master bedroom, where she plays up the beauty of the natural light with an elegant yet organic design scheme that feels positively dreamlike. Perhaps Westbrook’s most charming pick of all are the Paul Ferrante lanterns gracing the family room fireplace. A work of art in its own right, the towering stone fireplace was inspired by an image Adams had seen in an old Arts and Crafts book years before. While that image featured a fireplace with a copper hood, Adams imagined this one with two timbers projecting out that could be used to hang lanterns. “I always think second homes should be somewhat whimsical,” says Adams. “They’re an opportunity to depart from your day-to-day life. So have fun, let go and make that home an experience.” See Resources, Back of Book. 45

Pride of Place English-inspired architecture was fitting for this Buckhead home’s traditional environs. opposite The homeowners have long collected fine pottery, so the design team— led by interior designer Tish Mills Kirk and architectural designer Joel Kelly—delivered deceptively strong shelves for display. The white oak floors were a labor of love to reach the perfect finish. “The color is awesome for hiding soil, as well as wear and tear from pets,” Mills Kirk says.

W WORK, PLAY, THEY’RE ALL THE SAME, says Tish Mills Kirk, when she’s collaborating with her favorite people. At least this much was true with a particularly rewarding Buckhead project the designer likens to “a two-and-a-half-year playdate.” Mills Kirk first met the client 13 years ago during a showhouse— a relationship that sparked one project, then another, and another, until one day the client announced something unexpected: She wanted to build from scratch. “She said there were things about the house she could never solve due to its age and wanted to start fresh,” explains the designer, who recently rebranded her business from Harmonious Living by Tish Mills to Tish Interior Design. “[Their previous home] had a fair

amount of color—mostly jewel tones; she and her husband were ready for a much quieter space.” Knowing Mills Kirk so well made it easy to have the utmost trust as they discussed how their dream home would look. “Visually, we just got an idea of the middle of the house, the things that mattered most to them. We ended up essentially writing the program—room sizes, objectives, functionality, what they need, what they don’t, how they live. The next question was, ‘Who do we use?’” Mills Kirk set up numerous meetings, sitting in on them per client request. “I knew within five minutes that Joel [Kelly] was who she’d choose,” says Mills Kirk of the Atlanta architectural designer. “The client’s chemistry was so good with him; he has really good

restraint and beautiful edit, and she’s the most restrained and edited client that I’ve ever had.” While builder Tony Reaves spent a year with realtors sussing out a site, Kelly honed in on the interior zones of the house— “knuckles,” as he dubbed them, that could ultimately be rearranged, like a sliding puzzle, to make the most of any chosen view. Upon procuring the perfect property— perched high above Buckhead amid lush trees and wooded trails—the design team erected a residence suitable for the neighborhood: all painted brick and English influences, with landscape design by Eric King to match. Inside, the look is much more modern. Clean-lined, Zen-like and bright, it’s a palette of predominantly white, taupe and gray, with cool-toned metals and driftwood-colored floors. Mills Kirk also merged her client’s seemingly incompatible requests for strong symmetry and high contrast, solving the conundrum with asymmetrical seating groups, odd accent pieces and a mix of textures. Kelly and Mills Kirk harmonized with Reaves on interior architectural elements such as coved ceilings, precise wall paneling, engineered floating shelves and display alcoves that look as though they were carved directly into the plaster walls. “The house looks really effortless, but there’s actually so much technical detail in it,” Mills Kirk explains. Case in point: a 25-foot-wide, scalloped fireplace wall—which won the duo an ASID Design Excellence award in 2017—whose carved limestone and white oak panels aligned flawlessly. This detail is repeated on

Instead, the couple prefers the breakfast room, where a grid of steel windows envelops them in natural light. “We wanted [the architecture] to suggest that the breakfast room was once part of the porch. That’s why steel windows frame three sides and the barnwood ceiling continues outside.” The designer and clients continue to have meetings in this space—because they’re already gearing up for their next big home build. INTERIOR DESIGNER MELANIE TURNER was presented with a challenge: take a modern, four-story townhouse steps from the Central Business District of New Orleans and infuse it with more classic sensibilities. On top of that, the home needed to be houseguest- and party-ready. Turner met the challenge by helping her client realize a dream—to create an ultimate getaway for his parents, where they could entertain family and friends in the bustle of the city during Mardi Gras and other occasions. “It’s rather like a grown-up fraternity house for seniors,” quips Turner. “There’s a bar on every floor, glass doors at street level that open up completely for parade time, a rooftop pool and lounge space, and a billiards room.”

“I like second homes to be calm, not cluttered, so I use minimal but meaningful accessories. I want our clients to put their bags down and start relaxing immediately.” —Melanie Turner 65

Turner brought in a gentle palette of blue, sage green and lavender—grounded with ivories—to impart a soft attitude throughout the floors, which are joined by a contemporary glass stairwell. Antique pieces imbue warmth into spaces that might otherwise feel cold; the composition under the stairs on the first floor, for example, includes a trestle table, gilt mirror, balustrade-style lamps and footed chest topped with books.

“As most homes in New Orleans have antiques, it was natural to include them, even in this setting,” says Turner. The designer also introduced classic pieces that have a modern edge, such as a klismos chair and Saladino sofa. The decorative accents are spare, which is intentional. “I like second homes to be calm, not cluttered, so I use minimal but meaningful accessories. I want our clients to put their bags

down and start relaxing immediately.” Or in this case, perhaps, ready to make merry. In that vein, the designer used a sectional sofa, club chairs and benches with curved legs to provide plenty of seating options in the living room; there’s also a television viewing area on the top floor with sofas that turn into sleeping options for grandchildren. With its open atrium—which all bedrooms connect to via inte-

rior windows—and goal to entertain, the townhome’s unique design also gave Turner room to add a little whimsy. Multiple lanterns on brass chains drop dramatically into the atrium at varying heights, with the lowest hovering above the dining room table. “Everything was based on fun,” says Turner. “And the stage is perfectly prepped for entertaining in great style.” See Resources, Back of Book. 71

Suave & Sophisticated far right The home’s overall lighthearted look takes a turn in the bar and billiards space with an illuminated onyx bar top. “It’s a nighttime room, so we used a dark gray for the bar area,” says Turner. An antique mirror and shapely lamps temper the room’s masculine feel.

LIFE

END NOTE

A SOFTER SIDE OF MODERN

I’LL NEVER BE KNOWN AS A FASHION trendsetter. Jeans that have been ripped from working on a ranch are acceptable; intentionally ripped jeans confound me. At this point in my life, I’m happiest at the intersection of simplicity and quality; my uniform of dark-wash skinny jeans, Italian loafers and cashmere capes serves me well. I’m of a similar mindset when it comes to interiors. My background is in selling documented antiques and art—a waning market amidst the abundance of licensed products available in showrooms and big-box stores. I’ve progressed to live in a fully remodeled mid-century ranch with a step-down living room featuring panoramic views of the California coast. My contemporary kitchen features an island constructed from sleek white quartz with a waterfall edge. However, when the quartz spills down, the design aesthetic shifts. My floors are wide-plank French oak in their natural 80

honey color—a soft, warm place for both the eyes and the feet, one that harkens back centuries. But my design marriage of old and new has strayed further than hardwood floors. Tucked away in discreet corners of the house are a few 20th-century relics of home technology: landline telephones. The Pacific is a majestic ocean but she’s frequently moody and when her winds howl, a landline provides far superior reception. Additionally, the constant ping of text messages, e-mail and calls on a cell phone becomes a distracting cacophony. When I turn my cell phone off, only my inner circle can find me on my landline. So for all the contemporary construction and modern amenities of homes today, and for all the trends that plague fashionistas into keeping up appearances, I’ve found my softer side of modern in cashmere, Italian leather, French Oak and the most priceless element of all: the sound of silence.
