Powering transformative camps for children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges

Camp Twin Lakes is a nonproďŹ t organization that provides year-round, fully-adaptive, and deeply impactful camp experiences to more than 10,000 of Georgia’s children and young adults, helping each camper grow in their conďŹ dence and experience the joys of childhood. Our intentionally-designed programs help campers overcome obstacles as they learn new skills to more independently manage their challenges. As they make memories with their peers, the isolation they often feel vanishes in the comfort of new friendships forged by the strongest of bonds—the challenges they have in common. The magic happens at our fully adaptive, medically-supportive camp sites in Rutledge, Winder, and Warm Springs, Georgia, and through Camp-to-Go programs at children’s hospitals around Atlanta.

ORIGINS Pre-eminent Italian architect Andrea Palladio infused 16th-century Venice with a style rooted in the designs of ancient Greek and Roman temples. Based on the principles of symmetry and proportion, Palladio’s villas were balanced by a central pediment supported by columns that echoed the designs from 2,000 years earlier. Palladio’s Venetian creations were renowned for his windows: a central arch over two sides now commonly referred to as the Palladian window.

PERFECT PALLADIANISM Thanks to an inherent appreciation for CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE, examples of Palladianism can be found throughout the south. While many ASSOCIATE THE STYLE with the renowned Palladian window, there are several defining characteristics of the ICONIC COMPOSITION Written by

SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

18

Palladianism had a resurgence in Great Britain when 17th- and 18th-century architects Inigo Jones, Robert Adam and Lord Burlington populated the English countryside with lavish house estates featuring the archetypal designs accompanied by mock temples in the gardens. Although Kensington Palace was originally constructed as a Jacobean palace, subsequent Stuart and Georgian monarchs made additions that created a massive residence, and one that now displays a facade with the temple front and arched window. Stowe’s Temple of Venus and Chiswick House are two of England’s most renowned examples of Palladian architecture. The style was quickly adopted in 18thcentury America wherein the desire for order in our new country was echoed in a desire for equally perfect architecture. Founding father Thomas Jefferson spent his life creating his beloved Monticello— his Palladian-style home with the name meaning “little mount” in Italian. Irishborn 18th-century architect James Hoban designed the White House based on Palladianism wherein the bow-fronted South portico has been the site of every Presidential transition since John Adams took residence in 1800.

INFLUENCES

CHARACTERISTICS Although Palladio’s aesthetic was created for sunlit Venice—a city sited on the shores of the Adriatic Sea—and it was based on architecture created for the sun-bleached peaks of Rome and Athens, those conditions did not deter 17th-century English architects from employing the design characteristics in the gloomy British climate. Pediments and columns quickly turned gray in the frequently drizzly weather while Palladian windows in London let in the diffused light of the landlocked city. Nonetheless, the British were captivated with the style, and the magnificent proportions and symmetry graced their expansive country houses. Equally ambitious, American architects embraced the style, and Palladian-inspired homes and buildings could be found from New England to the South. Interestingly, neither the British nor the Americans altered the proportions of Palladianism, making it one of the few things the two 18th-century countries agreed upon.

MASS MARKET A large number of residences and commercial buildings continue to include Palladian influences. While most often customconstructed to meet specific architectural proportions and scale, prefabricated elements are available for purchase. 19

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham I TRY HARD TO KEEP MY EAR to the ground in hopes of learning what new design trends might be coming down the pike, and what I’ve been hearing lately has left me gobsmacked. Believe it or not, more than one person—we’re talking design authorities who have toiled in the profession for ages—has predicted that the next big thing will be some semblance of the Edwardian-redux look of the mid-1980s, which was most famously (and perhaps most notoriously) executed by those ’80s-era design darlings, Denning and Fourcade. If I could, I would insert the astonished-face emoji into my text right now. Before anyone flips out, let me say that today’s internet age just doesn’t seem like the right breeding ground for Gilded Age decor, and I sincerely doubt we’ll be indulging in those tassel-and-trim-festooned curtain valances and Austrian window shades last seen in 1985. The material and labor alone would cost a fortune, and I, for one, don’t want my living room looking like a Victorian-era parlor. That said, I do think these design prognosticators might be onto something. Perhaps the point they’re trying to make is that after two decades of transitional and contemporary design reigning supreme, some of us may have grown a little bored and are ready to experiment with ubertraditional decorating once again. I can’t be the only one who misses seeing damask or brocade, although I admit both look their best today when used in serious moderation. And I’ve noticed that more elaborate trimmings are popping up here and there in interiors. I’ve even spied that favorite 1980s design flourish, bullion fringe, on more than a few fashionable sofas and chairs lately. Of course, the pendulum will never completely swing back to where it was 40 years ago, nor should it. We live in too modern an age for all that. But maybe the time has come to reacquaint ourselves with at least some of the blasts from the past. Like they say, everything old is new again.

STREAMLINED SIMPLICITY Ford Fry’s latest Atlanta restaurant, LITTLE REY, combines high-quality cuisine with laid-back comfort Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

IF YOU’RE AN ATLANTAN, it’s safe to assume you’ve visited one of chef and restaurateur Ford Fry’s acclaimed restaurants—which span from Buckhead’s King + Duke and Decatur’s No. 246 to Tex-Mex titans Superica and El Felix. His newest restaurant, Little Rey, located in Piedmont Heights, centers around wood-smoked chicken al carbon and all things Tex-Mex. Offering a counter-service setup and a menu developed by Fry and chef Kevin Maxey, it’s Fry’s most casual restaurant to date, a “slightly distant cousin” to Superica. The 3,500-square-foot eatery’s playful design— accomplished in partnership with Smith Hanes Studio—strikes a “funky Austin vibe,” Fry says. Think hand-painted signage, vintage memorabilia (including folk art from the 1970s and Mexican festival masks), hanging plants and punchy pops of pinks, blues and aqua-green. Though laid-back, the menu is comprised of top-notch ingredients. In addition to chicken and Tex-Mex staples—tacos served on handmade tortillas, salsa and queso, for example—the menu also highlights fresh salads (we recommend the La Superica), breakfast tacos and soft-serve ice-cream flavors such as tres leches and churro. There are also fresh margaritas (of course) and a rotating selection of house-made agua frescas. “We wanted it super simple,” Fry says. “Kevin comes from a background of super-fine dining and is talented and technical. I don’t believe he (or I) know how to cook while taking shortcuts and using inferior ingredients.”

A RENOWNED DESIGNER OF LUXURIOUS INTERIORS across the globe, Suzanne Kasler knows how to quickly size up a space, a talent that Frank and Kathy Argenbright observed firsthand when she designed their Sea Island home. “I can’t say enough about how creative Suzanne is,” Kathy says, noting the designer’s long list of accomplishments, which includes authoring gorgeous design books, designing furniture collections and keeping in touch with former clients. “She’s a rare find.” Naturally, the couple turned to the designer again to make over their two-level piedà-terre in Buckhead, even asking her to tour the space before they made an offer. While the full-floor unit offered plenty of room and beautiful slatted maple ceilings, its dark wooden cabinetry and thick black moldings made it feel a bit severe, almost commercial. Kasler encouraged them to buy it anyway. “I could see that by making some simple changes, I could create the most beautiful environment,” Kasler says.

Balanced Beauty A trio of pendants by Palmer Hargrave through AinsworthNoah and new barstools by Gregorius Pineo through Jerry Pair freshen up the open kitchen. The abstract painting is by Jeane Myers through Pryor Fine Art.

Adding a new wall in the front foyer, for example, creates a sense of enclosure and provides a place for a large abstract painting. A custom teal velvet-covered love seat punctuated with vibrant silk pillows likewise adds a splash of color to the newly painted white walls and millwork, a welcoming first impression. The entrance hall leads into the formal living room, a bright and airy milieu furnished with matching sofas and a pair of clean-lined chairs, all covered in the same rustic white linen. In front of the steel-framed windows, a modern red leather bench offers additional seating without interfering with the treetop views. “The palette is all champagnes and neutrals with accents of gorgeous color,” Kasler says. Indeed, a lacquered light blue accent wall creates an elegant backdrop for a fine art photograph by Massimo Vitali in the dining room. Above the table, a bespoke brass chandelier commands equal attention. “It’s like sculpture,” says Kasler, who encouraged her clients to check it out in person in New York City before they invested in the heirloom-quality piece. 39

While the handsome open kitchen and family room required little work, Kasler brought in woven barstools and incorporated a built-in banquette covered in a warm gray leather alongside a steel table with a marble top. “I like mixing woven, natural materials with all the metal, marble and stone,” Kasler says. “That juxtaposition of texture is so interesting.” Equally intriguing is how Kasler’s design for the penthouse has changed Frank and Kathy’s perspective on Atlanta, where they spend more time than ever, entertaining friends and family alike, often walking to buzzy nearby restaurants. Of course, the best part is coming back home. “Suzanne’s spaces feel clean-lined and open yet pretty and refreshing,” Kathy says. “This feels right.” See Resources, Back of Book.

“FROM THE BEGINNING, we were intentional to avoid the word ‘unit,’” says visionary homebuilder John Wieland when explaining how One Museum Place (OMP)—a luxury collection of just 44 condominiums in Midtown Atlanta—got its start. “The post office wants to know what unit you live in; if you visit a friend in a high-rise, they give you their unit number. But at OMP, we all live in homes.” It’s a simple sentiment, but one that captures the essence of the unique Peachtree Street development that Wieland first imagined more than 15 years ago. At the time, he was chairing the High Museum of Art’s Building Committee, which was presiding over the museum’s expanded campus designed by noted Italian architect Renzo Piano; Wieland took notice of three old buildings directly across the street. “The phrase ‘prime location’ would have been an understatement,” says Wieland, when describing his fascination with the trio of spaces owned by The Woodruff Arts Center. Once the museum’s sizable expansion was complete, Woodruff decided to sell

off the property and Wieland was eager to scoop it up. “I just knew this would be my dream project, one of those career-defining opportunities,” he says. Wieland secured the sale, but the project was halted when the recession hit. When the economy began to recover, Wieland and project developer Randy Shields got to work demolishing the existing buildings and enlisting architect Merrill Elam to design a sophisticated condominium concept that was respectful of its location. “I think 15th and 16th on Peachtree is the best architectural block in Atlanta,” says Wieland, “so constructing a soaring glass tower wouldn’t have made sense.” The result of his unique vision is a modern, two-building development rising just five stories and boasting not only plenty of green space, but also a generous array of windows and glazed exterior doors that are more reminiscent of custom homes than city condominiums. The development has attracted international buyers as well as Atlantans who are trading in their homes for something smaller and closer to the action.

Wieland and his wife Sue fall into the latter category. “We were the quintessential ‘been there, done that’ suburban couple,” says Wieland. “We had a wonderful home on 2.6 acres where we lived for 40 years, but we began to ask ourselves, ‘How are we going to finish up life good?” And so they packed up and moved into OMP, where they’re able to enjoy an evening at the Atlanta Symphony without the stress of traffic. Wieland and his wife also viewed their move as an opportunity to explore more contemporary interiors, which they entrusted to interior designer Julie Witzel, who had just finished designing OMP’s common areas. Admiring her aesthetic sensibilities and collaborative nature, they hired the designer to craft a warm, welcoming and forward-thinking home. To ensure the condo’s grand proportions (this one is more than 3,500 square feet) didn’t register as overwhelming, Witzel worked with the couple to establish specific functions and personalities for each space. “In every one of our meetings, we had extensive discussions on how they saw themselves living throughout the home to ensure we were being mindful of balancing beauty with function,” she says. For example, the cozy den, with a custom walnut fireplace as its centerpiece, is perfectly appointed for enjoying a fireside nightcap, while the media room’s Flexform sectional and durable leather-top bar are ready for more boisterous evenings, such as Super Bowl Sunday. The dining room also offers flexible seating options: the table, custom designed with Skylar Morgan Furniture, can be broken down into three smaller pieces to accommodate an intimate crowd. Luxe materials—from the bespoke rugs underfoot to a custom wall-to-wall headboard created from leather tiles—play a role in grounding the rooms. “The warmth of the wood furnishings and softness of the velvets and mohairs are key; these touches make the home feel approachable even though it is expansive and modern,” says Witzel. 51

Witzel.indd 51

8/21/19 9:43 AM

Blushing Beauty At Wieland’s request to introduce color, Witzel used purple as a neutral in the master bedroom. The custom headboard is comprised of leather tiles from Studioart.

The minimalist aesthetic also allows the Wieland’s impressive art collection take center stage. Art is a shared passion for the couple, whose acquisitions center around the idea of home, a reflection of Wieland’s illustrious homebuilding career. While much of their 400-piece collection hangs in their Midtown gallery, wareHOUSE (a 20,000 squarefoot, not-for-profit endeavor soon to be opened to the public), Witzel worked with the couple’s personal curator, Rebecca Dimling Cochran, to select works for this home. Most notably, Roy Lichtenstein’s House III maquette sits atop a custom acrylic pedestal in the living room. In the winter, when the leaves have fallen off the ginkgo tree that fronts the High’s lawn, the American pop artist’s full-scale House III sculpture (donated by Wieland) can be seen from that exact spot, a nod to the couple’s love of the arts. Art from their collection also lives in OMP’s common areas on a rotating basis. “There was a lot of thought that went into making OMP special,” says Wieland. “Twenty years from now, I think people will still be marveling at its character.” See Resources, Back of Book. 52

Sense of Place In contrast to the dining table’s dark finish and sturdy shape, Brown selected barrelback dining chairs from A. Rudin and host and hostess chairs by Jiun Ho, through R Hughes.

EVEN THE MOST INTREPID ADULT might think twice about overhauling the family home while simultaneously parenting three little girls under the age of 3, but not so with one young couple. Having purchased a house for their brood in the Chastain Park area, they turned over the home’s interiors to Robert Brown, essentially giving him carte blanche to design rooms that are both mature and kid-friendly. Selecting a stylish mix of neutral colors and contemporary furniture and art, Brown also had to ensure that any furnishings could withstand the rigors of child’s play. In other words, “the house had to be bulletproof.” In contrast to the home’s traditional architecture, Brown took the interiors in the opposite direction, explaining, “We wanted to make the home feel younger by adding some contemporary elements, but without taking it too far.” Having first settled on a soft color palette of muted grays, taupes and even some peach tones, the designer then tackled the furniture, gravitating to unfussy pieces with clean lines and simple shapes. But while the furniture may appear uncomplicated, its placement was anything but. Weighing the needs of the family with the occasional design challenge presented by the home’s open spaces, Brown devised well-crafted furniture arrangements that addressed both. 57

Clean-Cut Because his clients are avid entertainers, Brown cultivated an array of sophisticated environments to act as sophisticated backdrops for dinners and cocktail parties.

Soft Spoken Customized by Design Galleria Kitchen & Bath Studio for the home’s previous owners, the kitchen islands were refinished by Builders II and given new marble countertops.

BROWN ALSO HAD TO ENSURE THAT ANY FURNISHINGS COULD WITHSTAND THE RIGOR OF CHILD’S PLAY. IN OTHER WORDS, THE HOUSE HAD TO BE “BULLETPROOF.”

59

BobBrown.indd 59

8/21/19 11:45 AM

Take the living room, for example, which has but one wall on which to anchor furniture. His solution? Float much of the furniture in the room’s center, including a daybed which can be accessed on both sides. Then there is the family room, which Brown purposely furnished lightly, giving the children space to play, especially in the room’s middle. Many of the upholstery fabrics were chosen with child’s play in mind, including the durable outdoor fabrics used in the heavily trafficked kitchen and breakfast room. The parents are not without their own play spaces. Because they are avid entertainers, Brown designed the living and dining rooms 60

for their use, cultivating sophisticated environments for dinners and cocktail parties while also creating sleek backdrops for the couple’s then-nascent art collection. “We laid a background for starting a nice art collection,” said Brown, who in turn guided the homeowners toward abstract, modern pieces in a variety of mediums, including works by artists Auguste Garufi and Sylvia McEwan. The ultimate playground, however, may just be the full-daylight terrace, which Brown transformed into a series of fashion-forward but functional spaces: a living room, wine cellar, bar, pool table and golf simulator. See Resources, Back of Book.

T THE SMALLEST DETAILS can make all the difference, and that was the case when a couple with four children hired interior designer Melanie Millner to finesse their recently renovated white stucco-clad manse at the end of a cul-de-sac along the Chattahoochee River in Buckhead. “It has good bones,” Millner says. “They wanted to take it to the next level.” Honoring the existing architecture and incorporating many of her client’s furnishings, Millner nevertheless transformed the interior. In the front foyer, antique mirror now clads the wall around the contemporary iron and glass door, reflecting light and expanding the space visually. And green mohair from Holly Hunt gives new life to the client’s existing benches—the first of many colorful notes throughout. In the kitchen, for example, a light blue Lacanche range purchased by the previous owner pops against the classic white cabinetry and marble countertops. The wife was unsure about it at first, but Millner helped her to see it in a new light, incorporating complementary throw pillows, slipcovered counter stools and artwork.

Character Driven above A mansard roof, charming wooden shutters and Europeanstyle gardens add instant character to this recently renovated house. left Brass globe pendants from Circa Lighting illuminate the marble-topped island in the kitchen, which was recently remodeled with a Lacanche range that inspired the new barstool covers by Douglass Workroom.

Color, in the form of chartreuse draperies and patterned throw pillows, likewise enlivens the client’s neutral furnishings in the sunroom at the back of the house. And a sumptuous, patterned, nearly wall-to-wall Tibetan area rug coordinates perfectly with the glossy gray-blue lacquered walls in the handsome study. The most dramatic transformation is undoubtedly the posh wet bar, which Millner incorporated into an unused elevator shaft. An antique mirror backsplash balances the dark green jute wallcovering and brown marble floors. “The details make it that much more special,” Millner explains. “There’s something unique in every room.” The bar is adjacent to the spacious double-height living room, where a pair of

matching sofas sit back-to-back, creating two distinct living spaces, one in front of the hearth, the other facing a TV area with a tufted ottoman covered in green fabric. “It’s warm and inviting, and they have absolutely embraced it,” Millner says. An entire wall of metal and glass French doors open to the new waterfront veranda, which Millner designed in collaboration with Land Plus. During the wife’s recent birthday party, nearly 100 guests milled back and forth between inside and out, where a band played her favorite tunes. While ideal for huge gatherings, the house functions just as well when it’s just the family. “Layers make a house feel like a home,” Millner says. “You can’t always pinpoint it, but you can feel it.” See Resources, Back of Book. 73

Raising the Bar left and below In one of the home’s most dramatic changes, a former elevator shaft has been transformed into a luxe wet bar outfitted with a jute Phillip Jeffries wallcovering, an antiqued glass backsplash and Sable marble tile floors from Materials Marketing. An upholstered armchair from Robuck makes a handsome addition. The light fixtures are from Circa Lighting.

Blue Crush Detailed with tape trim, the roman shades in a Holland & Sherry fabric were made by Douglass Workroom and are one of many blue accents in the recently remodeled kitchen, including the artwork by Kristin Blakeney from Gregg Irby Gallery.

Layered Luxe Tactile elements, such as a wallcovering by Weitzner Limited, foster an enveloping feeling in the formal dining room. An antique rug from Moattar is layered atop a sisal rug. The late 19th-century painted-wood buffet is from Provenance Antiques, and the white marble table lamps are from B.D. Jeffries.

LIFE

END NOTE

PUMPKIN MANIA

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT you had inhaled enough pumpkin-scented candles and soaps and no one could infuse life with more pumpkin, Kentucky Fried Chicken announced a pumpkin chicken wrap. I’m not trying that, nor am I tasting a pumpkin Twinkie or pumpkin Frosted Flakes. Furthermore, someone must tell Starbucks that it’s still hot in August and they should not launch the pumpkin latte while swimming pools are still open. Autumn is one of my favorite seasons in Atlanta. I love the Indian summer days that start with brisk mornings and end with crisp evenings. I love the swirl of yellow, orange and red leaves that blanket the city. I love rustic table settings that incorporate pumpkins and seasonal foliage, like the Barbara Westbrook table, pictured, but I do not love the omnipresent pumpkin flavor and scent that suffocates us from August through Thanksgiving. On the contrary, Los Angeles does not have autumn…or spring or winter or summer. There are no deciduous trees, so there are no swirling orange leaves and the thermometer reads 88

a steady sunny 78 degrees. Undeterred by the lack of weatherrelated seasonal changes, Los Angeles slides into autumn with a pumpkin hummus shake while our northern neighbors in San Francisco offer organic pumpkin deodorant. Although Californians have not mastered the art of the Southern football tailgate, we must give them credit for creative pumpkin uses—regardless of whether one wants to arrive at the office smelling like an overheated pumpkin patch. I’m not sure when pumpkin mania started; it’s been a slow sludge creeping into every facet of the market, and one that spans products, genres and regions of the country. Given the explosion of pumpkin products in the food market, it begs the question whether demand will increase for more products in the home sector. Aren’t real pumpkins the most authentic and beautiful autumn accessory, or do you think someone is working on a scratch-and-sniff wallpaper? Just wait, dear reader, let’s see what Jack O’Lantern launches for autumn 2020.
