DESIGN MAGAZINES ARE OFTEN beholden to the seasons. In November and December, we’re full-blown maximalists, spouting ways to indulge both yourself and the ones you love in luxurious items that might just bring a little extra joy come January…when we’re back to singing the praises of clearing the clutter and balancing the budget. But back to that more-is-more philosophy, which of course, is enormously more enjoyable this time of year, when there’s a slight chill in the air and a sense of longing and anticipation for what’s to come. This month, we visit three lavishly appointed interiors from Newnan to New York. Each project is unapologetically engaging— and a profound testament to the exceptional style and vision we’ve come to expect from our intrepid local design community. Speaking of exceptional style, we are pleased to open the doors to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ third-annual Home for the Holidays Showhouse on November 20, where you’ll find more than 20 of the city’s top design talents making their personal style statement against the backdrop of an enchanting new estate home. The official event program begins on page 73; we look forward to indulging in the season’s finest guilty pleasures with you then!

Embellished with geometric lines of interlacing raised silk on a hand-knotted Tibetan wool backdrop, Neisha Crosland’s new line of rugs for THE RUG COMPANY takes inspiration from a bamboo trellis fresco. After playing with the idea of rearranging the design, Crosland stripped the bamboo element, replacing it with bold lines in daring colors that take style cues from the neon pigments of Dan Flavin’s fluorescent light installations. The resulting motifs superimpose vibrant tones against more subtle hues, creating a charged, eye-catching effect. Available at Travis & Company, ADAC, (404) 237-5079; travisandcompany.com

ANTIQUING IN ATLANTA Atlanta has a strong decorative arts community, and it’s bolstered by an array of antiques shops and markets. From dealers specializing in one specific genre to design showrooms at ADAC that incorporate a broad range of antiques with their contemporary lines, shoppers can find almost every style and period of antique. While some businesses ship via the proverbial container from Europe, others carefully curate inventory via private collections, auctions and estate sales. With such an abundance of antiques shops, markets and showrooms, Atlanta remains a trusted resource for designers and clients throughout the Southeast. Here, six designers share with former antiques dealer SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON their perennial favorites in Atlanta, as well as shopping experiences farther afield.

The Galleries of Peachtree Hills, an enclave of Continental-style buildings representative of the high-end shops and offices located within the development. EDGARREEVES LIGHTING & ANTIQUES, ROBUCK, PARC MONCEAU ANTIQUES LTD., SPALDING NIX FINE ART, JACQUELINE ADAMS ANTIQUES
and FRANCOIS & CO. were echoed by each designer as being a frequent source for antiques in Atlanta. “I love shopping at both Parc Monceau and Robuck because the inventory represents each proprietor, so it makes it a fun and interesting experience,” says John Oetgen.
ADAC has seen a dramatic change since it opened more than 50 years ago. Today, many ADAC showrooms that once only carried fabrics and wallpapers now incorporate antiques into their inventory. AINSWORTH-NOAH, HOLLAND & COMPANY and TRAVIS & COMPANY have been reliable sources for English and Continental antiques for many years. “Mr. Ainsworth’s eye is special,” designer Stan Topol declares. 2300 Peachtree was designed by Jane Marsden in the 1980s. While interior design and architectural offices occupy the beautifully designed European enclave, 2300 remains one of Atlanta’s most esteemed addresses for 18

Miami Circle has seen much development over the years and continues to serve as a sound antiques resource for designers and their clients. DEARING ANTIQUES, WILLIAM WORD FINE ANTIQUES, FOXGLOVE ANTIQUES and THE GABLES ANTIQUES have been longstanding dealers located on Miami Circle.

ANTIQUES 101: CRASH COURSE Our panel of designers share their tricks of the trade, from what to look for prior to purchase to finding a place for pieces of sentimental value. HOW IMPORTANT ARE PROVENANCE AND AUTHENTICITY TO YOUR CLIENTS? “Authenticity is a direct ratio to cost, so we expect validation for an expensive item; however, there are charming pieces where pedigree becomes a nonissue,” says designer Carole Weaks says. Margaret Kirkland declares that while her clients love to hearing background information, most “buy for the aesthetics and patina rather than pedigree.” According to Stan Topol, “I shop only where I feel comfortable with the dealer and I know what I’m looking at and know it is correct.” DO YOU SHOP WITH A SPECIFIC LIST OF ITEMS IN MIND, OR DOES PURCHASING ANTIQUES HAPPEN MORE ORGANICALLY? Quips Weaks: “Does anything beat serendipity?” Designer John Oetgen concurs. “I’m organic in everything; it’s so much more fun and creative,” he says. Margaret Bosbyshell always shops with a list but says “inevitably we stumble on fabulous pieces, and we always take those into consideration if they’ll work within the project.” Topol is always up for a challenge. “Shopping is my art form,” he declares. SHIPPING IS OFTEN A CONCERN, WHETHER FROM ABROAD OR LOCALLY. DO YOU HAVE ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? “Get quotes, insure everything and crate when fragility is a concern,” says Margaret Bosbyshell. Weaks admits the expense is a necessary evil. “Shipping is expensive, but we use regular shippers with whom we have an established relationship,” she says. 20

DO YOU INITIATE ANTIQUES SHOPPING WITH YOUR CLIENTS, OR DO YOU WORK WITH ANTIQUES THEY ALREADY OWN? “I always incorporate quality pieces and rugs into my projects, whether I find those pieces or the client already owns them,” says Topol. Weaks says her clients usually already have pieces that they want to keep; but “once in a blue moon we have a client ready for something totally different, so we call this a dream job.” Oetgen enjoys infusing his project with fresh and often whimsical elements. “We like to find a few new and unexpected things so that the project feels fresh,” he says.

DO YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF IN A POSITION WHERE AN ANTIQUE THAT A CLIENT ALREADY OWNS DOESN’T QUITE JIBE WITH YOUR NEW DESIGN PROPOSAL? IF SO, HOW DO YOU HANDLE THAT? “We believe in practical luxury, so if something is too fragile, worn out, not comfortable or the wrong scale, then we try to educate the client about it,” says designer Clary Bosbyshell. If the item is of sentimental value, says Weaks, she tries to incorporate it into the overall scheme, “but if something isn’t going to work, the client usually understands and agrees not to compromise the overall design aesthetic.” According to Kirkland, “often the scale or functionality can make a piece difficult, but we always try to find a home for it.”
ROBUCK VIGNETTE BY EMILY FOLLOWILL
DO YOU CURRENTLY SHOP AT AUCTIONS OR VIA INTERNET SITES? “I shop at New York auctions for my clients, and I love the websites 1stdibs and Dering Hall because I can easily check availability and pricing from reputable dealers,” says Kirkland. WHAT ARE SOME OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH PLACES THAT YOU SHOP IN ATLANTA? “We frequently shop at The Stalls on Bennett Street, some of the markets in Chamblee and always at Scott Antique Markets,” says Margaret Bosbyshell. Kirkland says she finds “great 21

containers at Boxwoods; I love Fred Reed Picture Framing for beautifully framed series of prints; and I cannot go into Star Provisions without leaving with something fabulous.” WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP OUTSIDE OF ATLANTA? “My hands-down favorite ever is Marché aux Puces in Paris, and it’s always on the agenda,” says Weaks. “Renaissance Interiors in Louisiana has beautiful and interesting pieces,” recommends Clary Bosbyshell. Topol notes that there are “fabulous finds in Buenos Aires.” John Oetgen shops “wherever I am in the world, from Highlands to the Caribbean. New Orleans remains a favorite of Margaret Bosbyshell. Kirkland shops at John Rosselli Antiques in New York, Mallett Antiques in London and the shops of the L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in Provence. 22

WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVORITE ANTIQUES PURCHASE? “Every day we sit in the pair of 19th-century Gustavian bergère chairs I purchased from you and your mother [Deanne Levison], and I think of you often,” Oetgen tells Hamilton. “But I know the purchase that still drives you crazy is the one-of-a-kind Art Deco concave mirrored table that you sold to my client when you didn’t want to let it go.” Weaks notes that one particular client’s husband never responded to any antiques, but on a buying trip in France, he fell in love with a very large painting. It required architectural reworking in the study, but it made the design of the room. For Kirkland, her favorite piece for a client was a Victorian needlepoint rug purchased from the collection of Brooke Astor at a Sotheby’s sale. A favorite in her own home, however, remains a simple pine table purchased at Scott’s. Clary Bosbyshell’s favorite is also sentimental; her parents gifted her a Louis-Philippe marble-top chest as a wedding present. Topol says he “always loves a good rug.” Margaret Bosbyshell declares her alltime favorite an “English Regency mahogany server with mirrored doors.”

quently used in descriptions to convey that it is made in the style of that period but not from that period. It is a syntax that makes clear that the piece was not made in the exact period of the original design, but it was made in the style of that period. WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING PAINTINGS? Painting signatures are very difficult to authenticate because they can be easily forged, and midcentury European lithographs and prints are some of the most forged pieces on the market. The best advice is to go to a reputable dealer and spend a long time looking before you purchase. HOW ARE PIECES FAKED? Today many pieces are faked by using old wood to construct new pieces in the style of period pieces. When wood is buried for a few years and wormholes get into it, the wood appears to be old. Surfaces can be highly polished or rubbed down to imitate period pieces. Painting signatures can be forged, and paint-decorated furniture can be easily altered.
SUZANNA’S ANTIQUES
SHOPPING TIPS
SHOULD I STILL EXPECT TO FIND PERIOD PIECES WITH AUTHENTIC PROVENANCE IN 2015? One of my favorite quotes from my mother, Deanne Levison, is: “If England and Europe had produced enough antiques by the middle of the 19th century for every antiques shop in Europe and America to still be turning up period pieces in the 21st century, then the Continent would have sunk.” The truth is that most pieces on the market today have significant age, but to think that every single piece is a period, authentic piece is unrealistic. 24
DO REPAIRS AND REPLACEMENTS MATTER IN TERMS OF VALUE? Absolutely. If a piece has new feet, a new top, a new backboard or other significant alterations, then the value is diminished. If inlay has been added or the piece has been enhanced in any way, the value is diminished. Gold paint in place of original gilt is one of the biggest problems on the market, as well as altered paint decoration and enhanced patina on pieces. WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THE DESCRIPTION SAYS “STYLE”? The word “style” is fre-
IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG WITH BUYING PIECES THAT HAVE AESTHETIC AND DECORATIVE VALUE? Absolutely not; just know what you’re paying for. If you are paying for investment-level pieces, then make sure you are securing that caliber of items by purchasing from highly referenced sources that provide documentation. If it’s expensive but simply an aesthetic piece that you love and it makes your home special, then that’s OK, too. Just make sure that you understand what you’re getting for your money. WHEN BUYING AT THE INVESTMENT LEVEL, WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE? Go to an esteemed dealer who specializes in period pieces and has a strong reputation from multiple sources. This level of dealer will put a circa on the bill of sale, including an extensive description and any known provenance.

IS THERE SUCH THING AS A GOOD DEAL AT AUCTIONS? You can certainly find good deals at auctions, but you can also spend excessively if you don’t know what you’re doing. Just because something looks good in a catalog doesn’t mean that it’s right or in good condition. Most people get caught up in the frenzy of the auction and end up paying very high prices. Finally, don’t forget that every auction hammer price includes the further costs of a percentage premium for the auction house and shipping expenses. ARE THERE CERTAIN ANTIQUE PIECES YOU MIGHT CAUTION AGAINST PURCHASING? I would never advise against purchasing antiques, but there are some forms that merit special consideration. Antique dining chairs can be fragile and a liability. People lean back in chairs and tug on the arms, both of which can break antique dining chairs that tend to be on the smaller scale. Also, a person only needs one dining table; make sure you know exactly what you want before you buy one. Take your time, and enjoy the acquisition process.

THE ATLANTA BELTLINE’S slogan is “Where Atlanta Comes Together,” and these days you could substitute the word “Atlanta” for “developers.” BeltLine officials identified seven residential projects that are under construction or have been completed in 2015, including John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods’ The Square at Glen Iris and JW Collection’s Highland Park. Epic Development quickly sold out of its 10 modern industrial townhomes with base prices in the $600,000s and $700,000s on Irwin Street in Old Fourth Ward. The Water Tower Stacks (pictured)—Epic’s first townhome development, designed by G+G Architects—is expected to open in early 2016 less than a block from the BeltLine. Jim LaVallee, Epic’s vice president, ranks the BeltLine with the completion of I-285 and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as key instigators of development in Atlanta. “The future is not to live on the golf courses but these linear parks,” he says. Other BeltLine projects include Sky Hill Townhomes in Poncey-Highland, Bishops Row in Old Fourth Ward and two Reynoldstown spots: Rtown Lane and Moda Reynoldstown.

CELEBRATING THE
GOOD LIFE SINCE 1983
AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham I REMEMBER WELL THE SOUTH OF MY CHILDHOOD, where traditional design was pretty much the only decorative game in town, so to speak. To be fair, there were some brave souls who dared to dabble in modern decor and architecture, but for the most part, Southerners preferred to decorate their homes in a purely traditional manner, just as their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had done. Why? Because along with traditional decor, not to mention inherited furnishings, came a sense of comfort and nostalgia. After all, if it was good enough for our mothers and daddies, it was certainly good enough for us. But by the late 1960s and 1970s, things started to change in the South. Modernism, usually in the form of a contemporary painting, an abstract sculpture or a chrome and glass cocktail table, began creeping into our homes, taking its position alongside our Chippendale chairs, antique English chests and those once-ubiquitous ancestral portraits. And much to our surprise, we discovered that modern decor complemented our traditional furnishings quite nicely. I have to hand it to fellow Southerner Billy Baldwin, for it was he who popularized the notion that contemporary furnishings and art could—and should—be used alongside antique French chairs, for example, or floral-print fabrics. Suddenly, traditional design didn’t seem quite so stuffy anymore. Since Baldwin’s day, many Southern designers have embraced this “mix,” as it’s typically called. I recall that the late, great Atlanta decorator T. Gordon Little often peppered his traditional interiors with sleek, modern furnishings. And it wasn’t unusual to find antique furniture in those contemporary houses designed by the late Henri Jova, one of Atlanta’s most-celebrated modernist architects. Today’s designers continue to redefine traditionalism, putting their own modern spin on this time-honored style. Bold color, overscaled pattern and idiosyncratic furniture pairings are but a few of the twists being given to traditional decor. Traditional design might still be traditional, but thanks to its fresh, new attitude, it certainly can’t be described as old. If only the same could be said of me.

Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with reďŹ ned cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. ATLANTA-BASED MARGARET KIRKLAND was in Manhattan in November 2014 when she received a call from a pair of potential clients: a married couple who searched online for a “traditional young designer” with the hopes of finding a candidate who could create a youthful but classically beautiful home in the city. “We talked together about a vision and hit it off immediately, and they hired me before meeting in person,” says Kirkland. Seeking an Upper East Side pied-à-terre, the clients wanted the urban abode to have a completely different aesthetic than their primary residence in the country. The husband requested that the house be “grown-up and pretty, with a chintz bedroom,” a 21st-century version of his childhood home, which was designed by Mario Buatta—the iconic Prince of Chintz, renowned for his lush, colorful interiors. The clients proceeded with the design process, including placing preholiday rush orders with showrooms and drawing architectural plans, long before the home purchase was confirmed in early 2015. Knowing this was a fast-track project with a March installation, they made only a few modifications to the classic seven-room floor plan, one of which involved combining the dining room and 39

family room for one large living space. “The clients requested keeping a separate formal living room, so if they have a large dinner party, skirted round tables can simply be set up in the elegant living room to create a refined dining atmosphere,” says Kirkland. Using the clients’ collections of antiques, Kirkland mixed bright colors, sophisticated patterns and contemporary pieces to create a vibrant interior for this busy young family. Beamed ceilings provided strong architectural elements, but with the addition of subtly grained paper in the family room and gold tea-leaf paper in

the gallery and hallway, the ceilings are now spirited design statements. The commanding four-poster bed in the master bedroom is balanced by the Colefax and Fowler chintz encapsulating the entire room. “We mixed pieces that they already had with things we purchased in both Atlanta and New York to create a house that feels like a timeless, collected home,” says Kirkland. And if Kirkland’s work is any indication, this home will continue to evolve with a rich, understated elegance. See Resources, Back of Book.

A comprehensive renovation of an Atlanta high-rise results in the pinnacle of classical architecture and design.

When Atlanta designer Caroline Willis was asked to create a historically accurate home, the task was not a stretch for the Virginia native, who attended the Thomas Jefferson–founded University of Virginia and holds a deep appreciation for highly refined architecture and decorative arts. Although the homeowners were downsizing from their sprawling generational house, they were determined to retain their collection of antiques— and the feel of an inviting family home. “Caroline introduced us to architect Bill Litchfield, and they had an immediate understanding of our needs,” says the homeowner. Updating the condominium with modern conveniences while attaining an unparalleled level of architectural detail throughout required a comprehensive renovation. Both Willis and the homeowners were involved in every step of the process, giving meticulous attention to each detail of planning. 47

The homeowners’ sofa and ottoman were reupholstered to incorporate the soft color palette of the Oushak rug from Designer Carpets. A collection of Southern pottery and stoneware commands attention in the shelves flanking the seating area.
Willis was also charged with the complex task of integrating the homeowners’ antiques collection while still achieving a comfortable, welcoming interior. “The architecture and the antiques are both very strong, so we created a softer feeling in the interior design for a comprehensive whole,” she says. Willis used variations of the client’s favorite color—green—throughout the house in the form of paint colors, rugs and fabrics. Sophisticated Costa Esmerelda marble countertops in the kitchen add subdued color to the bold white cabinetry. Muted blues mix with creamy neutrals in the bedrooms to create soothing retreats overlooking the treetops outside. Crisp white bathrooms establish polished, restrained spaces. “In creating a beautiful space that honors the architecture and antiques, it was important that the house feel collected but not like a designer did it,” notes Willis. A dining room rug from Moattar was among the first purchases to set the tone for the new interior, but Willis chose not to reupholster all of the original furniture. “We intentionally left a few pieces in the client’s original upholstery so that the home would look lived in and comfortable,” she says. While some historically accurate homes have the tendency to feel stiff and formal, Willis infused a modern elegance into authentic architecture by integrating contemporary elements, such as a gentle color palette and present-day rugs. The epitome of success was when her client exclaimed, “I’m so happy—I feel like I’m living in a London flat above Kensington Gardens!” See Resources, Back of Book. 49

A designer known for his expressive statements, Topol believes that “comfort is the ultimate luxury,” an opinion that influenced his work on this home. opposite The home's foyer features a mix of old and new, including an antique Queen Anne oak chest from William Word Antiques and a Chinese ceramic lamp by Rose Tarlow Melrose House.
IT’S RARE TO FIND A HOME THAT BOASTS the work of two designers, much less one where the work has been successfully blended. One such example is this sophisticated Newnan, Georgia, farmhouse, which was first decorated by the late Joye Hirsch nearly a decade ago. Recently, when the husband-and-wife owners decided that the time had come to refresh their home’s interiors, they enlisted the help of an equally talented designer, Stan Topol, who is also their neighbor. An admirer of Hirsch, Topol left much of her work, including the home’s interior finishes, intact, choosing instead to embellish the existing design. “When a designer is good, you leave things,” says Topol. “I was lucky that someone talented had worked in this house before me.” Referring to his work here as “old-fashioned decorating,” Topol focused his efforts on selecting furniture and accessories that reflected his clients’ easygoing personalities. “Everything has to follow the way the homeowners are,” he says. “If they’re relaxed, everything has to flow the same way.” This design philosophy is especially evident in the sizable living room, which Topol lavished with comfortable, intimate seating arrangements that allow for both easy
conversation and television viewing. “I’m really sensitive about people sitting near each other and being able to talk,” says the designer. And because the couple’s grandchildren are frequent visitors, Topol considered their comfort, too, by giving them their own proper perches: pint-sized versions of a Windsor chair. Like the children’s chairs, classic American pieces accent the home’s interiors, from provincial art to Nantucket baskets, which the designer admires for the “softness and gentleness” they bring to their surroundings. Perhaps unexpected, though hardly out of place, are more luxurious furnishings from the likes of Rose Tarlow and George Cameron Nash, which coexist alongside the traditional Americana. “I don’t think that because you’re living on a farm that you have to feel like you’re living on a farm,” Topol explains. Indeed, it’s well-appointed comfort rather than rusticity that defines this farmhouse, which benefited from two designers’ expertise. Topol’s delight in enhancing Hirsch’s work was reaffirmed when the owners’ longtime housekeeper remarked, “You added all this furniture but made the room bigger.” Continuing Hirsch’s legacy, he says, was an opportunity to relish. One of Topol’s favorite pieces in the foyer is a reproduction secretary cabinet from Grizzel & Mann. “I love pieces with scale that are intriguing,” he says. opposite In the living room, a loveseat and club chair, both covered in Manuel Canovas’ Nevada chenille, provide fireside seating, while a colorful patchwork Oriental rug by Asia Minor grounds the space.

embellished it,” says Topol, who was responsible for the bedroom’s Stark Carpet rug and the bedding, including the coverlet by Léron. The curtains, furniture and accessories were originally selected by Hirsch.

BABY GR ANDS
FROM IMPROMPTU CONCERTS TO GORGEOUS SIDE-PROFILE SILHOUETTES, MARCIA MUSES ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BABY GRAND, AN ELEGANT REPRESENTATION OF LONG-STANDING TRADITIONS.
picture Elton John onstage, hands flying over the keys. I remember buying a baby grand for my onebedroom apartment in New York, and it took up so much room that you had to squeeze past it to get to the sofa. But, of course, I took care to present it just so: the lid must be half-open for the most elegant profile, and the benches must be covered with couture cushions and silk trim. I tuned my piano bench into a pièce de résistance with Scalamandré’s Pagoda silk and bullion trim from Cowtan & Tout. Sure, Granddaddy may be the only one who can actually play Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 in C. It’s a lost art, but we aren’t giving up our favorite musical intrument.
“Every room in your home should make you smile,” says designer John Oetgen of this living room, which he anchored with a playful Moroccan rug, baby grand piano and green leather chairs that can be gathered ’round for an impromptu concert.

ERICA GEORGE DINES
GROWING UP with a baby grand piano anchoring our living room, we Sherrill children were forced to learn how to play. Our baby grand was adorned with the requisite framed family portraits, candelabra and momma’s various bric-a-brac. It was elegance itself. More than that, though, it was a staple of any good Southern home. Even those of us who stopped playing after mastering “Chopsticks” have baby grands adorning our homes. (You see, we don’t have to actually play, since we all have friends who do.) Today there are digital pianos that practically play themselves, but I must say that I prefer the classic appeal of the now oldfashioned instrument; just

WELCOME TO HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS! Each year, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine presents the much-anticipated Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse and Marketplace, a tradition that kicks off the holiday season while showcasing the work of Atlanta’s top design-industry talents. For the third year, showhouse proceeds will benefit the Children’s Learning Gardens of the Southeastern Horticultural Society, an initiative that helps families across Atlanta improve their lives through nutritional education and hands-on gardens. This year’s 15,000-square-foot home, Millwood Manor, resembles Scotland’s Stonefield Castle, showcasing an aged limestone façade and a slate roof that lend a historic presence, giving the impression that the residence could have been plucked from the European castle’s grand, circa-1837 estate. Plentiful windows, which flood the home with light and afford views to both the front and rear of the property, make the house particularly conducive to entertaining. A private master suite features an office vestibule and quiet sitting space. Upstairs, the family sleeping quarters are separated from the spacious guest room (or, thanks to the elevator, an in-law suite), and additional rooms enjoy their own staircase. The lower terrace level features ample casual entertaining areas, as well as a private guest suite—all of which include exterior views to the rear of the estate. Please join us at our special holiday events, including the opening night party, Moonlight & Mistletoe (page 26), Sign, Dine & Design (page 26) and ADAC: Day of Design (page 27). During showhouse hours, don’t miss Well Set: Entertaining in Style—a selection of holiday tabletops designed by Atlanta retailers—or Boxwoods Boutique Marketplace, both of which are located on the terrace level. Enjoy classic holiday films (and, on weekends, SEC and NFL games) in our home entertainment area. We hope your Home for the Holidays experience will encourage you to celebrate not only this enchanting season, but also showstopping design, the city of Atlanta and our evolving lifestyles.
GET THE DETAILS THE STONE: 80% antique guillotine limestone and 20% Tennessee ashlar. The main stone is a Lueders tumbled buff limestone. All stone has a joint. THE ROOF: 12 inch with 80% gray Vermont slate and 20% purple Vermont slate. THE WINDOWS: Windsor Pinnacle clad series casement windows. THE FLAGSTONE: Cast stone.

WELCOME from the Home for the Holidays team My earliest Christmas memory is lying in bed as a child and knowing—believing—that I could hear Santa’s sleigh bells above. And it was obvious to my four-year-old mind that Santa had that small Southern town early on his list that night. So, I thought it sensible to wake my parents at 3:30 a.m., delirious to discover what had been magically left under our tree. Holiday memories and stories create so much of the magic during this season. While designing and building Millwood Manor, we imagined the stories of the families who would live in this home. Our 20 designers have infused their talents and magic into each room. We celebrated how this showhouse launches the Atlanta holiday season, creates memories and stories for friends and families, and inspires our guests’ own homes. Two men who have created magic in homes throughout the country, and who have some of the greatest stories to share, are our Moonlight & Mistletoe honorees, Hal Ainsworth and Winton Noah, owners of ADAC’s Ainsworth-Noah Showroom. To celebrate these two amazing gentlemen, who are design icons in their own right, is a joy and honor for me, for the magazine and for Atlanta. Their influence and style are legendary and are found in many rooms in this year’s showhouse. During the Sign, Dine & Design events, you will meet some of our favorite authors. Over lunch and cocktails, hear how their stories made it into the pages of their beautiful books (perfect holiday gifts!). This holiday season, I hope you share your stories with loved ones. During your visit, I hope you find the magic and remember how it feels to believe that you’re hearing sleigh bells. Clockwise, from top: Kimberly Sundt, Mary Reynolds, Public Relations; Susan Zinger, Volunteers; Debbie Swann, Tickets; Amy Musarra Kramer, Events.

MOONLIGHT & MISTLETOE Hal Ainsworth and Winton Noah
and when it does, you’re protected by TM
The unlikely pairing of Winton Noah, a business-minded Texan with a degree in petroleum engineering, and Hal Ainsworth, an antiques dealer specializing in the restoration of historic homes, has resulted in one of the most successful and long-lasting partnerships in the design industry.
Including pets!
Carpets featuring LifeGuard™ offer protection for the entire product – from top to bottom.
In the mid-70s, the pair moved to Atlanta and began making a name for themselves with two retail shops on Peachtree Street across from Piedmont Hospital: Horse of a Different Color and Wicker Horse. By 1979, they officially incorporated as AinsworthNoah & Associates, Inc. and consolidated their operation into an 800-square-foot showroom at ADAC offering one line of wicker furniture, a single line of fabric and a small cache of antiques.
LifeGuard’s patented WATERPROOF BACKING system REDUCES ODORS and stains, allowing easy and more effective cleanup. You can be confident that your home will stay clean and fresh with LifeGuard carpets.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Southeastern Horticultural Society
Now open
Since 2008, when the Southeastern Horticultural Society (SHS) was founded from the longtime roots of the Southeastern Flower Show, the organization has grown to include year-round educational programs and events with a mission to connect children, teens and adults in metro Atlanta—and throughout the Southeast—with nature. SHS provides a platform for communities to learn about, experience and sustain healthy environments.
2857 Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta Georgia 30339 For reservations call 770.432.5555
SHS Learning Gardens & Urban Farms (LG&UF) are vibrant, active spaces located within metro Atlanta communities. SHS brings knowledge, experience, technical assistance and yearround programming to develop a healthy, vibrant “green space” within the neighborhood. Each LG&UF features rain-harvesting water conservation systems, organic vegetable beds, composting stations, and native plants that attract and support pollinators. The sustainability of the LG&UF is accomplished by investing in local residents who acquire ownership through continued involvement. SHS’ focus on youth is apparent in these outdoor “science classrooms,” where educators lead hands-on environmental education programs. SHS programs support innovative technology and sustainable practices such as large-scale composting, organic farming and water conservation through rain harvesting. All of this helps build environmental awareness as residents within a community learn important skills that they then pass along to others, building a stronger, healthier and more sustainable community.
