PORTRAIT PORTRA IT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES
I’VE RECENTLY BEEN ASKED—QUITE A BIT, ACTUALLY—what makes Southern design, in general, and Atlanta design, more specifically, so worthy of national attention. The two projects featured in our November issue, both of which involve dream-team collaborations on the interiors, architecture and landscape architecture, have one thing in common: hospitality is always top of mind. These design professionals (some of the top talents in their fields) have conceived every last detail with their client’s guests in mind, whether it’s the retractable screens in the outdoor terrace that provide protection against mosquitoes, the monogrammed pillows in the grandchildren’s bunk room that make them feel at home, or the lily pad pond that provides just the right soothing sound properties for privacy and entertaining alike. It’s that thorough respect—for the tiniest of details—that makes both homeowners and guests feel not only at ease, but also appreciative of the extra mile. Only in our fair region could “approachable” and “easy” precede the word elegance, as it pertains to our homes. Because pretension is just about the only thing we shy away from. Speaking of unpretentious elegance, I hope you’ll join us for the 2016 Home for the Holidays Showhouse in Buckhead benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Graciousness (and gorgeousness) will be on display at every turn—with the added bonus of a heaping dose of holiday charm (find the official event program on page 73). STAN
TOPOL WRITTEN BY Suzanna
Cullen Hamilton
As a protégé of Billy Baldwin, Stan Topol’s introduction to design in the 1950s was nonpareil. Today “the last decorator” has a roster of clients ranging from world-renowned celebrities to iconic hotels to Buckhead social matrons.
Experience THE BEGINNING: “After decorating my childhood room, my mother told me I had good taste, so I became a decorator,” Topol says. Growing up in Mississippi, he was exposed to beautiful homes and fine things, an experience that trained his eye for his Master of Fine Arts. 1950s: Topol
moved to New York, where he met renowned decorator Billy Baldwin at a cocktail party. The pair took New York by storm, with Topol managing installations of beautiful interiors and priceless art.
Stan Topol in a Newnan, Georgia, home he designed in 2015.
18
1970s: Topol founded Stan Topol & Associates in Atlanta, while concurrently heading the interior design department at The Art Institute of Atlanta. From Elton John’s Buckhead penthouse to the most discreet dressing room, Topol has created exquisite interiors for a variety of clients.
The Quest
Topol’s fascination with beautiful, documented paintings is legendary. His appreciation spans all genres and periods, the unifying factor being a knowledge of the authenticity and integrity of the piece as it represents the artist. Topol’s passion for shopping extends to all aspects of decorative arts, and he seeks sources across the country to find the best examples.
Most Thrilling Design Moment “Billy Baldwin asked me to oversee the installation of a painting at a client’s house that had been on loan to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. When I opened the door, I was shocked to see that it was a Goya. The experience of hanging a painting by one of the most renowned 18th-century Old Masters remains a highlight of my career. Additionally, Billy introduced me to Mario Buatta, Angelo Donghia and the timeless elegance of the armless chair.”

“We begin every project with detailed, hand-drawn floor plans and renderings. There’s no comparison between human talent and a computer.”

On the Horizon
“I’ve got three projects in three states, and that doesn’t include the restoration of my own 1847 home that I recently acquired. Also, I’ll be speaking at The Brooks Memphis Museum of Art on the subject of ‘The Last Decorator’—and decorator is a term I’m happy to own.”
“If people appreciate art, then their minds are open to the world,” Topol has said. Topol’s clients, who request interiors that are both elegant and comfortable, aren’t quite the type to cut corners or make substitutions. Instead, the decorator likes to educate his clients about the art behind the design of pieces of furniture and fabric.

INFLUENCERS
STAN’S
10
rules of design 1. Always understand the purpose of a room.
2. Understand the architecture of that room.
3. Always design the seating arrangement so that it enhances the architectural integrity of the room.
4. Rarely show the back of a sofa… unless you have designed it so the back is as important as the front.
5. Never walk into a space with the side of a cabinet sticking out from the wall.
6. Always counter balance the structure of the room with the furniture.
7. Remember that people need to be able to talk and hear each other … watch your distances.
8. Having style does not mean one has to be stylish. What is the trend today may look dated and tacky tomorrow.
9. Always check the backs of your chairs as well as the sofas. Backs are a sure tell-tale sign of an amateur when they are straight-down.
10. Finally, remember to consider the artwork of a room, it tells the entire story before you can look at the furniture or the fabrics.
20
“Scale, proportion and quality matter. Art matters. Arranging a room for conversation matters. It’s critical that rooms have as much substance as style, and that they function as well as they look. Yelling across the living room to have a conversation just because the furniture placement looks good is not acceptable.”

“You can only be the best if you’re exposed to the best. You have to work for someone else first in order to be exposed to the best— sources, products, people, workrooms, galleries, art, architecture—everything.”
From sprawling country homes and horse farms in Newnan, Georgia, to exclusively private high-rise condominiums, including The Residences at the St. Regis, Atlanta, Topol’s body of work represents both a passion for conveying a client’s personal narrative as well as the capacity for creating beauty in every last crevice of a home. A longtime art and antiques collector, as well as champion of the interior design trade, Topol’s lusciously layered approach is always in style.

“TO MANY OF US, ‘HOME’ IS SOMETHING MORE than an experimental laboratory or a parade-ground for the eccentricities of Fashion.” So said Emily Post in the 1930s, expressing her skepticism of the then newly fashionable modern style. A traditionalist through and through, Post doubted the merits of modernism, even likening some types of modern design to funereal decor: “Thick slabs of polished stone; draperies of dull white silk or chiffon, pleat on pleat; beams of light directed heavenward from high brazier-shaped lamps of alabaster repeat the suggestion of cemetery monuments and mortuary chambers.” Although time has proven modernism to be anything but an eccentricity of fashion, I do concur with Post that our homes aren’t necessarily the place for trendiness. For traditionalists like Post, home is meant for tried-and-true classics that rarely go out of style and, in fact, often improve with age. Take damask, for example. A highly traditional textile, damask began to look a little long in the tooth toward the latter part of last century—so much so that legendary designer Billy Baldwin once said the fabric made him throw up. But the damasks being produced are hardly nausea-inducing. Treated to splashy colors like teal, fuchsia and chartreuse, damask has undergone a vibrant makeover, making it particularly appropriate for today’s high-impact interiors. And what about antique Regency and Empire furniture with ebonized finishes? Outdated? Hardly! Considering the recent mania for inferior pieces of furniture being tarted up with high-gloss paint, Regency and Empire-style antiques are a much-needed improvement, a step up in both quality and style. They’re the perfect decorative answer for those who like antiques but who crave something other than brown furniture. To the list of forever-classic traditional furnishings, I would add Chippendale-style sofas, toile, William Kent tables and Chinese export porcelain, not to mention Knole sofas, pie crust tables, Dutch brass chandeliers and, well, so much more. Mix these pieces with contemporary art or modernlooking fabrics, and you have an interior scheme that will look right not only for now but in the future, too.

Architecture firm Harrison Design and residential builder McGarrity-Garcia constructed a six-bedroom abode that favors a Lutyens-style country house commonly built in England during the late 19th century, complete with varying chimney details and brick and limestone elements. opposite While some would consider placing such a feminine wallpaper by Arena Design in a powder room, Heather Dewberry said that the homeowner wanted to be surrounded by things she loved every day. The waxed brick floor with wooden crossbanding by McGarrity-Garcia adds warmth to the breakfast nook.
W WHEN HEATHER DEWBERRY of interior design firm HuffDewberry met her clients in 2013, she knew she was in for a treat. “The homeowner was spunky, vivacious and possessed a real verve for life,” Dewberry says. “From the beginning, she knew what she wanted, and the home reflects her cheerful personality and style.” The house looks and feels more like an English estate than a traditional Buckhead residence. Mirroring a Lutyens-style country house—based on the designs of 19th-century British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens—co-designers Steven Markey and Rick Hatch of
38
Harrison Design curated its Surrey-style façade with wood moulded bricks, limestone and slate. In matching the design principles of the famed Englishman, Markey and Hatch made sure the house was equal parts function and style. “The layouts of both the interior and spacious lawn were intended for both two to 200 people,” says Hatch of the homeowners’ varied entertaining needs. “The courtyard garage system keeps catering trucks out of sight, while the lawn could easily host grandchildren at play or large outdoor dinner parties for hundreds of people.”

Various metals mingle throughout the space, like the eye-catching metallic ďŹ nish on the Hickory Chair counter stools, the aged-copper hood and the polishednickel plumbing. opposite Residential builder McGarrity-Garcia crafted a showstopping entry by incorporating a circular parquet design on the oak oors in the rounded landing.

right The homeowners relax in the library most evenings. The matching Baker club chairs sit across from the Holland & Company desk in the walnut-covered room. A painting by Amy Sullivan, represented by Huff-Harrington Fine Art Gallery, hangs above the mantel. below “The homeowner loves a good Cosmopolitan, so she wanted a pretty place to craft the cocktail,” Dewberry shares about the antique buffet turned bar.
Connectivity with the outdoors was a huge priority for the homeowners, so Huff-Dewberry, Harrison Design and builders McGarrity-Garcia fused the two spaces with large leaded windows, allowing the custom details throughout the extensive interior to shine. While spacious (the house boasts more than 6,000 square feet), the floor plan feels open and approachable. “When standing in the 42
middle of the hall, you see straight out the three sides of the home,” notes Hatch. But even with its many nooks and crannies, attention to detail never falters. Dewberry and the homeowners loved the parquet-style floors at The Frick Collection in New York City, so McGarrity-Garcia incorporated a special circular oak parquet design in the entry. Another

AN ERA CONSTANTLY DEFINED BY WHAT’S NEW AND NEXT, there’s something to be said for taking a look back. It’s a sentiment shared by the homeowners of this new yet historically inspired Buckhead dwelling. They craved a graceful and understated home that could be enjoyed by several generations. Essentially, the couple was seeking an heirloom, not a trophy. Happy to oblige was residential designer William T. Baker, who drew up a sprawling home with distinct English Regency nuances. “This style tends to be very comfortable and family friendly, which were priorities for the couple. They also wanted it to be timelessly elegant, and this particular style really lends itself to that aesthetic,” he explains. The historical references begin with the striking exterior. Intricate ironwork, painted to match the white brick, greets visitors on the front porch. Through the entryway is a cozy foyer that plays host to plenty of conversations and gatherings thanks to a wood-burning fireplace. “It’s something you very much would have seen in an 18th- or 19th-century English house,” says Baker of the unique space complete with seating arrangements. Also adding to the home’s charm is Baker’s masterful design, which called for vaulted ceilings and a layout that’s virtually one room deep, allowing natural light to

The sizable lot backs up to a 100-acre nature preserve, a treat for the homeowners, who are avid gardeners and enjoy being outdoors. Together with Michaelides, they dreamed up a fantastical backyard, which included this greenhouse designed by Baker.

A soft palette of creams and beiges, tempered by touches of green, acts as a neutral canvas for not only the stunning garden views visible from each room but also furnishings that hold great importance to the family. “Most of the wood furniture in the home was built over the years by the husband or his father,” says McLean. “It adds such a wonderful sense of familial history. “The couple’s children are now grown, but they’re a very close family and they wanted this home to be a place where they can all gather,” she adds. Taking this into account, McLean’s furniture
selections can accommodate a seated dinner for up to 24 people between the dining room and spacious kitchen. Entertaining also often spills out onto the lush backyard, the vision of landscape architect Alec Michaelides and the home’s crowning jewel. It’s impossible to tell that the immaculate Englishinspired gardens were only recently planted. “That’s the magic of working with Alec,” says Baker. “He and his team are very adept at creating special spaces. The property looks at least 10 years old.” That includes a charming greenhouse and workshop—both designed by Baker—that are seamlessly woven into the backyard’s verdant landscape. “The clients gave each of us the luxury to do what we do best,” says McLean, noting the couple’s unwavering trust. “So when you have the right team in place, you end up with something spectacular.” See Resources, Back of Book. 61

LIFE
MARCIA SHERRILL
MARCIA’S FAVORITE PLACES
THE BAR
From red-wine drinking to special-occasion entertaining, Marcia discusses the evolution—and the art—of properly housing and serving libations, just in time for the holiday season.
N
OW, I MAY NOT DRINK, BUT I SURE KNOW HOW to entertain. I can remember being a child and watching my grandparents in action at their wood-planked bar. They had all the bells and whistles—a cocktail shaker, stirrers and a host of glasses specifically designed to suit each beverage. Sadly, my parents had opted for a house without a built-in bar, so they had to resort to a gilt bamboo bar cart, which they’d wheel around when guests came by for a visit. By the time I graduated college and scooted to Manhattan, I was determined to have a bar of my own—it felt like the Yankee interpretation of making my adult debut. Seren72
dipitously, I found a tiny bar at a local auction. It may have been small, but it had functional compartments and all the accouterments, including pretty silver-plated tongs and my very own ice bucket! When I relocated to Atlanta and acquired more space, I scoured Little Five Points and scooped up a burled-walnut bar chest. It may have looked like an innocent armoire, but I tricked it out with tiny umbrellas, swizzle sticks, cocktail shakers and, of course, an ice bucket (this time, monogrammed). Today, when guests come to call, I’m at the ready…though it’s my bar stools that steal the thunder from my concoctions!
SARAH DORIO
A terrace-level built-in bar, a collaboration between designer Shawn Broaddus and contractor Mike Hammersmith, is the ultimate interpretation of ultra-chic entertaining.

Pittman and a selection of some of the region’s best designers. Initially a red-brick “five/four and a door” Colonial with a small, one-story sunroom, the home now boasts an English Arts & Crafts façade, featuring eye-catching terraces, a pair of elegant gables, painted limestone brick and steel doors. A wide terrace across the front features doors from the living room out onto the terrace while clean lines and symmetrical details add a contemporary edge that appeals to modern sensibilities. Please join us for special holiday events, including the opening night party, Moonlight & Mistletoe, a toy drive in conjunction with Children’s Healthcare and much more. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is thrilled to be part of the restoration of an Atlanta residence whose character and style will provide guests with an intimate and magical holiday experience—and endless design inspiration.

W ELCOME from the 2016 committee Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is delighted to once again present Atlanta’s wintertime tradition, the Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, benefiting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Not only is this a showcase of work by some of the region’s most esteemed design talents, but it is also a celebration of the warmth and magic of the holiday season—and the timeless traditions that define this special time of year. For an even more meaningful holiday experience, this year’s Home for the Holidays is a renovation project on Woodward Way, just off Peachtree Battle Ave, in the heart of Atlanta’s premiere Buckhead neighborhood. By restoring this home with help from our 2016 designers, we hope to share its character, spirit and inspiring designs with you and highlight the enduring style of Atlanta. In this season’s spirit of giving, we’ve partnered with our beneficiary, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, for a host of special events such as cookie decorating, holiday storytime, Hope & Will on the sill and more. New this year, Home for the Holidays will feature an Honorary Junior Chair, 9-year-old Angelica Hale, a talented performer and former Children’s patient. We are also thrilled to honor mother-daughter duo Alison Womack Jowers and Cheryl Womack as Honorary Chairs. We encourage you to take with you the magic and inspiration that can only come from the collaboration and creativity of the Atlanta community and our showhouse team.

HONOR A RY CH A IR S HO Meet the 2016 Home for the Holidays Honorees
Alison Womack Jowers & Cheryl Womack, Honorary Chairs Welcome and happy holidays! We are thrilled to hold a special place this year in the longstanding tradition Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse. For over three decades, Womack Interiors has helped clients create spaces that feel like home, and it’s our great privilege to continue this endeavor with Home for the Holidays. Joined by a host of incredibly talented designers, the 2016 showhouse is set to inspire. The homeowners have graciously opened their doors and worked with us to create a beautifully appointed and welcoming home. Having Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as our beneficiary makes this event even more meaningful. And this year, we have an extra special gift: Junior Chair Angelica Hale, a nine-year-old Children’s patient who has the heart and voice of an angel and affirms why this cause is so important. Thank you to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for celebrating Atlanta design and the community at large. We are overjoyed to serve as Honorary Chairs for this unforgettable event.

Angelica Hale, Honorary Junior Chair In February 2012, James Hale and Eva Norman noticed that something was very wrong with their normally vivacious Angelica. The 5-year-old was taken to the Emergency Department at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), where she was diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis, a serious blood infection that devastated her kidneys. Hale was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Scottish Rite hospital while her healthcare team worked for three days to stabilize her and fight the infection. Neonatologist Munir Kapasi, M.D., informed James and Eva that their daughter was facing triple organ failure. Angelica was then taken to Children’s Egleston hospital, home to one of the Southeast’s few ECMO centers, where she was put on a machine to assist her lungs for 12 days, allowing her organs to heal before surgery. Once Angelica was stable enough, Richard Ricketts, M.D., chief of Children’s Division of Pediatric Surgery, performed surgery to repair her lung, which had lost nearly half its function. After regaining her strength and continuing peritoneal dialysis over the summer of 2013, Angelica returned for a kidney transplant at Children’s. On September 13, 2013, Angelica received Eva’s kidney and bounced back quickly, much to the delight of her family and healthcare team. “I’m really glad we brought her to Children’s,” James said. “We’re so, so lucky. Taking her to a pediatric hospital saved her life.”

fter pursuing a love of aviation for over 10 years as a flight attendant, Jason Mitchell studied design, art and fashion, at Bauder College in Atlanta. This training was just the beginning of a lifelong passion and appreciation for design, which led him to start J Ansel Designs in 2005. Mitchell specializes in both residential and commercial design, with a style best described as transitional with a modern edge. With an eye for detail and a focus on creating spaces that look curated and collected, he understands his clients and the way they use their spaces, creating results that reflect his evolving sense of style and eye for beauty. For both small and large projects, from initial planning to the final installation, timeless design is key. For Mitchell, design is more than an aesthetic; it’s a lifestyle.
