WORK HARD, PLAY HARD. After the last pine needle is plucked from the floor of our Home for the Holidays Showhouse, the AH&L team plans to indulge in good old-fashioned downtime this season. Here’s how:

Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.

“With fabulous Champagne and as many family members as I can gather, then off to Rosemary Beach with friends!” —Gina Christman, Publisher “Catching up on books I haven’t had time to read, walking on the beach, and feeling grateful.” —Kimberly Sundt, Branding + Special Projects “It feels really good to say I have few plans. I’ll just relax and watch Christmas movies with my boys.” —Elizabeth Anderson, Art Director “You’ll find me catching up on reading by the fireplace, decorating the Christmas tree with Mom and trying (fruitlessly) to build the perfect gingerbread house.” —Claire Ruhlin, Assistant Editor

My own master plan is to set all devices aside, read holiday classics to my boys by the fire, catch my husband under the mistletoe and enjoy a cocktail (or two) at lunch with dear friends. Happy holidays from AH&L! 8

A CANOPY BY HILTON is planned for 2017 in the Luckie Marietta District. A BeltLine boutique hotel is expected to start construction in spring 2016 in Old Fourth Ward. Beltway Investment International, Smart Hotels, and Hospitality Ventures Management Group is planning the high-end, 140-room hotel designed by SBC. Set to be complete in late 2017, the hotel is expected to feature a rooftop lounge, 3,500 square feet of event space, and retail and restaurants. A public promenade and plaza will blend with the BeltLine.

2016 Atlanta REAL ESTATE SNAPSHOT JENNY PRUITT, CEO AND FOUNDER of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, and Dan Parmer, president and CEO of Harry Norman, Realtors, shared high points in the luxury market and expectations for the spring selling season. 1. WHAT IS THE OVERALL STATE OF THE LUXURY HOUSING MARKET IN ATLANTA? Pruitt: The luxury housing market is strong now; witness the recent sale on Garraux [Road] for $6 million and others in the multimillion-dollar price range. We have seen a substantial increase in over $3 million houses selling in the past six months, and by the end of the year, I expect that we will double what we have already seen. 2. WHAT DATA BEST SHOWS HOW THE LUXURY MARKET IS PERFORMING IN ATLANTA? Pruitt: Closed-sales volume is up 33 percent from the same period a year ago (for homes $1 million and up). Inventory is up 15 percent in units. The market is absorbing some of the inventory, as we are seeing a reduction in days on market. Parmer: We have about 14 months of inventory (for homes priced over $2.5 million). It’s still a buyer’s market. 3. AS WE LOOK TO 2016, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO SEE IN ATLANTA’S REAL ESTATE MARKET?

Parmer: We’re going to see about the same activity next year as we saw this year. I think there will be an increase in price, primarily because the cost of building a home is going up.

Some places create great stories. Others make history.

Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with reďŹ ned cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham IN SPITE OF THE MODERN AGE in which we live, December remains the most traditional month of the year, one that is steeped in time-honored holiday customs. During Christmas and Hanukkah, even the most forward thinkers turn their thoughts to the past, rekindling those annual traditions without which no holiday would be complete. For me, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a delicious Claxton Fruit Cake. Go ahead and laugh if you must, but if you’ve never had this particular fruit cake before, the joke is on you. The premier fruit cake, this Claxton, Georgia–baked treat has earned the town its nickname: “Fruit Cake Capital of the World.” Also as much a part of my holiday tradition as fruit cake are pecans, specifically Pecans on Peachtree, which are sold by the tin to raise money for Shepherd Center. Every year I buy dozens of tins, and every year I end up eating most of their contents. I guess what people say is true ... I am nutty as a fruit cake! You know what else spells Christmas to me? Shopping, of course. My holiday season almost always entails one earlyDecember trip to Lenox Square, with any last-minute shopping occurring on Christmas Eve day at Peachtree Battle Shopping Center. This year, I plan to expand on this routine by adding a visit to Buckhead Atlanta, whose festive decorations are sure to bolster my holiday spirit. Speaking of which, both holiday cheer and decorations are in ample supply at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Home for the Holidays Showhouse. For many of us, this Atlanta tradition, with its gloriously decked halls, has become a highlight of the season. Finally, what would the holidays be without Charlie Brown, Rudolph and Frosty? Why, that would be like Christmas without Santa Claus. By the way, I still count down the days to Santa’s big arrival just as I did when I was a child: with an Advent calendar. No matter how old we are, the holidays have a way of making us feel young again, and that’s a tradition worth cherishing. 27

Laid-back Luxe

In the living room of the 2016 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Serenbe Showhouse, Atlanta designer Lauren DeLoach

created a casually elegant space in which to entertain friends and indulge in conversation—or simply relax in style and enjoy the lakeside setting. Architect J.P. Curran designed the two-story, French Creole-style home in Serenbe’s Grange neighborhood to maximze the property’s expansive views.

DINING ROOM AMY MORRIS, AMY MORRIS INTERIORS Taking a cue from the dining room’s abundance of natural light, Amy Morris outfitted the windows with an elegant Jim Thompson fabric. “With three walls of windows, heavy drapery would have been a disservice to the room, so I opted for a sheer fabric that would let light filter in,” she says. The window treatments’ ethereal appeal is complemented by an oversize figurative oil painting and a cascading glass chandelier. Morris selected a persimmon Oushak rug to anchor the ribbed dining table and antique chairs, playing up her affinity for mixing old and new. A French console, graphic horn mirror and gilded iron stool also bring the designer’s signature style to life. 34

LIVING ROOM LAUREN DELOACH, LAUREN DELOACH INTERIORS TAKING A SOFT, serene and slightly feminine approach, Lauren DeLoach describes the living room as a reflection of her personal style. Relishing the opportunity to act as her own client, the designer employed elegant fabrics to inject new life to furnishings such as antique French armchairs, while elevating accent tables with unexpected textures. Cast concrete garden stools were transformed into drink tables, and a lattice iron coffee table keeps things airy while allowing a full view of the Turkish rug. In lieu of artwork above the mantel, DeLoach made a bold statement by hanging antique Spanish doors procured from The Nicholson Gallery. “I have a real soft spot for antiques and exquisite details,” she says. 37

KITCHEN MONTE HEWETT HOMES, BELL KITCHEN & BATH STUDIOS, HUFF HARRINGTON HOME A COLLABORATION between Atlanta’s top design firms, this standout kitchen is an ode to the home’s Arcadian architecture. Michael Morris, director of interior design at Monte Hewett Homes, and designer Melissa Nagle of Bell Kitchen & Bath Studios employed a monochromatic color palette to allow unique design elements such as the custom hood, handmade charcoal-colored backsplash and honed Piertre Gray marble island counters to shine. “We reinterpreted the traditional subway tile shape to look like brick that had been there for years,” says Morris. A metallic finish introduces an industrial vernacular, as do the metals rods connecting the suspended open shelving. Meg Harrington and Ann Huff of Huff Harrington Home furthered the charm with brass barstools, artwork and copper accents.

MASTER BEDROOM SUITE TAMI RAMSAY AND KRISTA NYE SCHWARTZ, CLOTH & KIND KRISTA NYE SCHWARTZ AND TAMI RAMSAY’s penchant for thoughtful design is thoroughly evident in this tranquil master suite. “We always gravitate towards designs that are richly layered with history and heart,” explains Schwartz. Here, they began by selecting a graphic linen fabric by L’Aviva Home for an accent wall. The pattern was designed by women from the tribal villages of Hazaribagh, India, who create the striking motifs as part of a matrimonial ritual. On the opposite wall, an artful vignette displays a painting by Clay McLaurin along with arrowhead collections and African masks. The rest of the space, including a stylish master bath and entry hallway, features custom details that play up the room’s soulful aesthetic. “It’s important to be intentional and edited with your design layers,” says Ramsay. “This way, they read as chic and subtle instead of overwhelming.”

A custom gray hand-plastered wallcovering from the Dillard Pierce Collection serves as the backdrop for a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings. FAMILY ROOM SHAYELYN WOODBERY, SHAYELYN WOODBERY INTERIORS The terrace-level family room designed by Shayelyn Woodbery exemplifies the home’s cozy yet stylish sensibilities. Nixing the traditional sofa-and-chairs setup in favor of an arrangement that wouldn’t impede flow in this high-traffic area, Woodbery introduced velvet swivel chairs flanked by a mix of low-slung stools. “Using both pen shell side tables and upholstered ottomans felt fun and less predictable,” the designer says. “Plus, they can double as seating during large gatherings.” Olive green walls and a playful, flying-ducks drapery fabric pull the look together while nodding to Serenbe’s lush, bucolic setting. A nearby Parsons-style bar-top table provides an intimate spot to enjoy a game of cards or a drink prepared in the kitchenette.

OFFICE JASON MITCHELL, SMITHBOYD INTERIORS BRIMMING WITH visual panache, this office by Jason Mitchell captures the dynamic character of the designer’s late grandmother through details that offer a snapshot into her life. “She was a seamstress by day and bootlegger by night,” explains Mitchell, who transformed a vintage sewing machine into a well-appointed bar. Atmospheric abstract art pays tribute to his grandmother’s pensive nature, while plush textures hint at her sense of style. A handsome carved desk showcases a treasured collection of magnifying glasses that also emulate Mitchell’s icon. “Her home was full of them due to her poor vision, so it sparked my own passion for collecting them,” he says. “She’s undoubtedly a huge influence in my life.” 48

GUEST BEDROOM BARBARA HEATH, BB HEATH & ASSOCIATES THIS LAKESIDE bedroom retreat by Barbara Heath was inspired by “glamping” (glamorous camping). Window treatments on either end of the plush leather bed were designed with pull-back corners to give the illusion of a tent opening, and Heath repeated their pattern—a delicate yet graphic Belgian linen print by Clay McLaurin—on the coverlet and shams. Antique gilt mirrors and a stately beside chest add elegance, as do thick drapery panels. “These were purposefully heavier in weight for a cocoon-like effect,” says Heath. “I wanted to create a space where you could close yourself off from your surroundings and really have a restful evening.”

FRONT PORCH B.D. JEFFRIES SERENBE’S verdant landscape informed the earthy, organic scheme of this front porch (below and opening spread) designed by the in-house design team at B.D. Jeffries. A live plant wall serves as a striking piece of art while also providing privacy. A custom live edge maple table showcases unique botanicals and hornets’ nests, creating unusual but artful accents. “The table is both beautiful and functional,” says designer Kati Hardwick. “It’s wonderful for hosting parties or casual gatherings.” At the opposite end, woven wicker chairs and a low-slung teak table capture the relaxed country lifestyle that has become synonymous with this pastoral community.

ENTRY FOYER, STAIR HALL AND POWDER ROOM LYNDSY WOODS, L. KAE INTERIORS LYNDSY WOODS BROUGHT her vision of a modern farmhouse aesthetic to life in this trio of spaces by mixing old-world charm with contemporary flourishes. Beginning in the foyer, ombré drapery and abstract artwork act as a chic backdrop for traditional barley twist furnishings. In the connecting stair hall, Woods took a bolder approach with Thibaut’s allover feather wallpaper in a rich cobalt blue colorway. A sophisticated brass mirror in the powder room, meanwhile, juxtaposes a rustic red vanity. “I love incorporating contrasting details,” says Woods. “It really elevates a space.” 53

SCREENED PORCH HUFF HARRINGTON HOME MEG HARRINGTON AND ANN HUFF, along with associate designers Sam Jones and Martha Douglas Peyton, bedecked a covered porch with Parisian charm—a Huff Harrington Home trademark. French linen chairs sidle up to an 18th-century Swedish table that was purchased on a recent buying trip abroad. Modern wicker stools keep things fresh and current, as does a vintage copper lantern overhead. Never ones to shy away from statement art, the team selected an abstract oil painting by Charles Ross. “We feel very strongly about including original art in every room,” says Harrington. “It brings great character and life to a space.” 54

She wrapped the mudroom in a deep blue-gray hue for a striking effect. An antiqued mirror console and leather stools pull double duty as beautiful accents and—respectively—a place to set down keys and an impromptu stepstool. The adjoining laundry room contrasts with its light-filled design scheme. “You have to be prepared for what happens in these utilitarian spaces,” notes Wilburn, referring to the tiled dog bath and durable quartz countertop. French limestone flooring, also a smart choice for lakeside wear-and-tear, seamlessly ties both spaces together. 55

REAR TERRACE STUART PLINER, STUART PLINER DESIGN ENTERTAINING WAS TOP OF MIND for Stuart Pliner when designing the rear outdoor terrace. Taking into account the length of the space, Pliner created two separate seating areas. “This is ideal for families, so that adults can mingle on one side, while kids can have some fun on the other,” he says. Furnishings from Kolo Collection’s handsome Opal line anchor the adult zone, which also features a fire pit, while a custom swing and a pair of Adirondack chairs in an aqua hue set the tone at the opposite end. “I wanted to use a bright color to highlight the energy of the space,” explains Pliner. Wispy curtains and elephant print pillows add a dose of whimsy.

INFLUENCED BY Serenbe’s outdoor living ethos, principals Missy Madden and Todd Yeager devised a complementary site plan that celebrates this lifestyle. “Yards aren’t just admired here—it’s very much a part of everyday life,” says Yeager. “Whether you’re hanging out with your neighbors on the porch or walking down the street to the General Store, it’s all about the experience.” To that end, the duo selected fragrant shrubs such as hydrangeas and gardenias to enhance curb appeal. Trident maple trees add visual impact with their scale and will provide much-needed shade as they mature. In the rear of the home, Madden and Yeager created a series of immaculate pathways where guests can enjoy the prime lake setting. 57

TEN YEARS AGO, RIVER CRUISING was a somewhat new vacation option. Now, it’s the hottest trend in travel. The reasons are many, but in general, it is a comfortable and ultra-chic way to sightsee. River ships are low to the horizon and most have floor-toceiling windows—in public areas and cabins—framing views of the shoreline and river. Most river cruise ships accommodate fewer than two hundred guests, so the crew-to-passenger ratio is a plus, too. You’ll certainly want to go with an all-inclusive experience. The super-stately brand, Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, is at the top of all-inclusive river cruise lines. No need to fret about securing advance reservations at on-board restaurants or shore excursions, and go ahead and leave that special bottle of wine at home. No squabbling over how much you are spending—everything you need is included: airport transfers, tips, meals, drinks, excursions—every62

thing, from the time you land to the time you are dropped back off at the airport, and just about everything in between. So live it up, guilt-free (financially speaking, that is). Scenic operates cruises and tours all over the world, but one of the line’s most popular itineraries starts in Tarascon, in the South of France, traveling up the Rhône and Saône rivers through Provence and Burgundy, to Chalon-sur-Saône. The Rhône River has a prime spot in European history and culture, dating back to its days as the northernmost boundary of Roman Empire. The cities and towns along the way hold riveting appeal, and the ship’s thoughtful excursions allow guests to explore many of them. Scenic delivers 5-star … well, everything. Despite the luxury, the experience still feels genuine, thanks in large part to a hyperattentive staff of 43. With a total of 167 passengers on board, that

comes down to one service professional for every 3.8 guests. The cruise never feels stuffy or pretentious, and there is no special dress code on board and no requirement for formal jackets or ties. The friendly crew quickly produces the intimacy of a convivial house party, and it is immediately clear upon boarding that you are in for a very special experience. Your very own butler is on hand to help unpack or to shine your shoes if you so desire, Mesdames et Messieurs. Another glass of Champagne? Yes, please. Your personal butler is the go-to person for whatever you need while aboard the ship and will quickly become your best friend. Each elegant stateroom is equipped with an iMac or a Mac mini, complimentary Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Besides offering a variety of stations and movies, the TVs show real-time action from the front of the ship. So, as the ship slithers through the rivers’ many river locks, you can watch the nail-biting excitement from the comfort of your bed. Other features include L’Occitane bath amenities, plush bathrobes, and Scenic’s own “Scenic Slumber Beds,” complete with crisp Egyptian linens, and even a pillow menu. The

cabin design is sleek and masculine with a modern edge. Anthracite grays, blacks, beiges and touches of metallic on the headboard panels give the space a smart, cosmopolitan vibe. Aboard Scenic’s “Space Ships,” several comfortable public areas are available in which guests may relax and mingle. The Lounge and Bar is situated all the way forward on Danube Deck and features floor-to-ceiling windows that allow for spectacular views of the passing scenery. An outdoor Sun Deck occupies the uppermost deck of the ship and features plenty of space for 360-degree viewing, in addition to an open-air lounge and a walking track, and it’s the single best place to perch and marvel as the captain navigates the 15 locks on the route from Tarascon to Chalon-sur-Saône. Every evening, guests gather in the lounge for cocktails while the ship’s cruise director covers all the details for the next day’s excursions. Nothing sets your mind at ease like having every component of the next day planned out in thorough detail, right down to the weather forecast. Transportation arrives precisely on time with a culturally informed, English-speaking guide to orchestrate the 63

group’s exploration. Just plug your ear bud into the exclusiveto-Scenic Tailormade GPS device, which, about the size of a cell phone, can be conveniently carried in your pocket. Or, if you aren’t the group-tour type, you can opt for a self-guided tour on foot or on an electrically assisted bike that the ship provides as well as Nordic walking sticks. Just let your Tailormade point out the not-to-miss sites as you explore. Or plug in to enjoy the commentary on the passing picture postcard coastline while relaxing on your cabin’s private, step-out balcony—another Scenic signature. Truly one of the highlights of this Scenic cruise is the food—an entire book could be written on the culinary mastery on this ship. It is astounding that this tiny galley kitchen, just slightly larger than a stateroom, puts out so much variety, and virtually all day long. Lavish and extensive buffets, with literally everything imaginable, are set up for breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with light bites in the River Café. Cuisine here is serious business. Food products are locally sourced as much as possible and, celebrating this passage through Provence and Burgundy, the kitchen makes a point to serve mainly regional wines, cheeses and other treats. The talent, organization and passion for delivering fresh, regional cuisine starts with Executive Chef Tamás Kiss, formerly of the Four Seasons Hotel in Budapest. His dedication is shared and demonstrated by everyone on the culinary team, whether cooking in the kitchen or serving in the dining venues. Scenic offers guests more “as you wish” dining choices than most river cruises. The Crystal Dining Room is situated forward on the Sapphire Deck and serves World-class á la carte dining in an open-seating format. The River Café on the Diamond Deck offers a “vitality menu” early bird and lateriser breakfasts as well as light lunch for those wanting lighter, health-centric options. There are other dining venues, too: Portobellos or L’Amour and Table La Rive for a full degustation experience for Diamond Deck guests. For a quiet start to the morning, your butler will deliver morning tea or coffee and Danish to your stateroom. Complete breakfast room service is offered to Diamond Deck guests. As if there weren’t enough choices already, room service is available 24 hours a day. As you disembark in Chalon-sur-Saône, you’ll appreciate the Dr. Seuss quote in the ship’s guidebook, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” scenicusa.com 64

“OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!” —DR. SEUSS Every trip should provide a sense of connection with a place and understanding of the qualities that make it unique. To accentuate this, Scenic Emerald’s excursions take guests into different cultures, providing experiences and thought-provoking enrichment. The tours are well chosen and expertly led.

TARASCON — The cruise’s starting point, Tarascon, is a quaint little town with easy access to the castle at Baucaire, St. Rémy-de-Provence, Les Baux and Arles.

AVIGNON — Visit the Pont-du-Gard and Uzés or Pope’s Palace. Or explore Les Halles d’Avignon market, meet market vendors and sample freshly shucked oysters and Muscadet with Scenic’s executive chef.

VIVIERS — Take a leisurely hike through this unhurried, uncrowded, authentic village highlighted by a tour of France’s smallest Cathedral.

TOURNON — Overlooking the hillside vineyards of M. Chapoutier and Paul Jaboulet Aine, the terrace of the medieval Château de Tournon (along with the sunset and some Burgundy wines) provides a memorable outing exclusively for Scenic guests.

VIENNE – TREVOUX — Hike or stroll through Vienne and glimpse fascinating ancient Roman ruins, cathedrals and temples. In Trevoux, “Scenic Enrich,” another of the cruise’s exclusive events, includes a cocktail at the majestic Château de Saint Trys and a private classical concert with instrumental soloists from the Orchestre de la Confluence.

LYON — The surprisingly energetic city reveals a varied array of art and architecture, echoing its long history. Visit a silk production facility, or the medieval town of Pérouges or take a cycling tour through the city. Lyon is also an active culinary center—the famous family house of Chef Paul Bocuse is here.

MACON — Breathtaking vistas through the Beaujolais region culminate in a visit to a Chateau winery, with a tasting of estate-grown wines and French cheeses.

SEASIDE SANCTUARY

With its temperate climate, breathtaking sights and mélange of pastimes it’s no surprise that Aruba is also known by its official nickname, “One happy island.” Claire Ruhlin WRITTEN BY

SITED IN THE HEART of the southern Caribbean, Aruba boasts a topography that’s as serendipitous as it is contradicting. Thanks to the destination’s location just outside the fringe of the Hurricane Belt, east trade breezes keep mosquitos (a common nuisance at neighboring Caribbean destinations) at bay and temperatures consistent at a virtually year-round 82 degrees and sunny. Sandy stretches of beach and pool-blue waters intermix with rugged desert and craggy shorelines to comprise the 70-square-mile island. Yet this antithetical landscape serves as an ideal backdrop for both unforgettable adventure and luxurious repose during any time of the year. Arikok National Park, for instance, which makes up almost 20 percent of the island, is home to desertlike terrain, hidden beaches and stunning vistas. Explore by foot or embark on a Jeep excursion for an up-close-and-personal look at the island’s dramatic landscape. While there, don’t miss the park’s natural pool, known locally as Conchi. Ensconced in lava rocks that serve as a barrier to the crashing waves of the Caribbean Sea, it’s worth the extra effort to witness. Stop by the park’s visitor center to learn about the government-protected land’s culture, history and conservation efforts. Those eager to go for a dip in Aruba’s iridescent waters should try their hand at one of the many ocean activities available on the island. The calm, transparent tides of beaches such as Palm Beach and Mangel Halto—a striking contrast to the topography of areas like Arikok—provide an ideal backdrop for activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Choose among more than 20 dive spots, ranging from 20 to 100 feet deep. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are particularly popular thanks to Aruba’s constant breezes and tranquil waters, and the island is known as the windsurfing capital of the world, hosting dozens of watersports tournaments throughout the year. Of course, in Aruba you’ll always find time to decompress. Indulge in a massage in one of Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa’s luxurious outdoor gazebos located along the shores of Eagle Beach, or visit The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba’s 15,000-squarefoot spa for a natural body treatment or massage. Soak up the island’s idyllic climate and take in breathtaking waterfront views underneath one of the many palapas—or beach huts—dotting the shoreline. It’s not difficult to understand why more than half of the island’s visitors return for a second trip. aruba.com

opposite Aruba’s breathtaking blue waters make it one of the most revisited destinations in the world. Palm trees and tropical coconuts populate the island. top to bottom Windsurfing is a must in Aruba and remains one of the destination’s most popular sports—due in part to the ideal weather conditions and calm waters. Aruba’s iconic beach huts, or “palapas,” provide shade for visitors looking to spend the day unwinding next to the iridescent Caribbean Sea. Aruba also boasts a refined, globally inspired culinary scene.

CULINARY CRUSH Home to more than 90 nationalities, Aruba takes its culinary cues from cultures across the globe. Stop by local favorite Zeerover, located in the fishing town of Savaneta, to sample fresh-caught seafood on the waterfront deck. Enjoy award-winning fare at Madame Janette Restaurant, where gourmet Caribbean dishes are prepared with international ingredients and European influence.

MAGICAL MAHEK AL

Mexico’s best-kept secret is a resort perched on a pristine stretch of beach in Playa del Carmen. WRITTEN BY

IMAGINE SOAKING IN THE SOUND of the waves crashing down from the Caribbean Sea—and gently falling into their rhythm as you sway back and forth, back and forth—from the comfort of a hand-woven hammock on the airy terrace of a thatched-roof casita. Across the sea, the island of Cozumel is easy enough to spot, but Cancun seems like a distant memory. There’s not a flat-screen in sight in the GypSet-inspired bungalow, and you may as well check your devices at the door. Mahekal Beach Resort, we have arrived. If you were to judge this freshly reimagined Playa del Carmen property by its ocean-front palapas alone, you might wonder if you had scored a ticket to your own personal paradise—a pristine, 68

920-foot-stretch of beach to call your own. Here, towering palm trees frame eloquent views; private plunge pools offer the best of both worlds; and thatched-roof accommodations are separated by hand-laid, winding stone pathways complete with bougainvillea and lush vegetation. The overall effect is a village-like feeling with a bohemian-chic meets laid-back luxury vibe, but the private-getaway mentality remains, whether you’re laying your head in a groundfloor, garden-view casita or top-floor ocean-front penthouse. Mahekal’s predecessor, the Shangri-La Caribe, was a pioneer in this once sleepy beach town, carving its place into the then-dense Riviera Maya jungle where it fortuitously met a pristine stretch of

Mahekal Beach Resort’s $10 million reimagination was influenced by “GypSet” style; its open-air spaces are at once bohemian-chic and informed by a desire for native authenticity.

beach. That hotel debuted back in 1982 with just six beachfront huts, and, through the years, wove itself into the fabric of a burgeoning Playa del Carmen. And while reality certainly feels gloriously at bay during your stay at Mahekal, the authentic Mexican experience, including the bustle of the neighboring shopping, dining and entertainment district on Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida), sits just two blocks away. Mahekal’s sophistication, it seems, pervades its immediate surrounds. The neighboring La Cueva del Chango (the “monkey cave”) restaurant takes the area’s tropical jungle roots to heart, offering a cave-like space in which to indulge in Mexican flavors; it’s

most recommended as a breakfast spot for its organic dishes like chilaquiles, huevos motuleños and fresh juices. A bit further into town sits Axiote, which prides itself on using 100 percent of Mexican products and ingredients. Far from a tourist trap, the chefdriven restaurant blends the best of traditional Mexican cuisine with methods and techniques of the “new” world. Back on-site, Boli’s Bar (named for the resort’s animated and industrious concierge) provides a cozy alternative to the typical bar scene on Fifth Avenue. Boli’s open-air, mix-and-mingle meeting spot offers guests ping-pong and billiard tables, hand-crafted cocktails and fresh-pressed juices, and even a take-one, leave-one 69

Included in the nightly room rates is Mahekal’s version of an all-inclusive option: the Modified American Plan, which covers daily breakfast and either lunch or dinner. While Mahekal is a place where self-indulgence reveals itself around every corner (think beachside massages; a Mayan-inspired Revive Spa spa is planned at the resort in 2016), nearby Tulum makes for an adventurous day trip. Explore the Mayan ruins after breakfast and soak in vistas from Templo Dios del Viento (God of the Winds Temple), which once guarded Tulum’s sea entrance. You’ll work up an appetite—so head to Tulum’s luxurious Ana Y José hotel for a late lunch and afternoon swim. It won’t be long, though, before you’re pining away for the best-kept secret that is Mahekal. Return to this gloriously lowdensity resort and sop up the breeze from a swing at Itzi, the poolside bar. In mid-December 2015, Mahekal Beach Resort is slated to complete the final phase of its threeyear, $16 million re-imagination. Fifty-five individual, palapa-style bungalows will be unveiled, as well as a new luxury spa and accompanying fitness center; an oceanfront, “Tulum-style” woodburning oven restaurant and bar; a resort-sized swimming pool and hot tub; and expanded wedding, meeting and event space. Mahekal, you’ve arrived. (877) 235-4452; mahekalbeachresort.com

STERLING SILVER

WHERE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY do little girls dream about their wedding silver? Here in Atlanta, there have been some who have gone as far as to get married precisely for the silver. And babies? Their birth is not properly acknowledged until it is cemented with a monogrammed silver cup, spoon or teething ring from the likes of Tiffany. We practically know a caviar spoon before we the ABC’s. Later on in life, when it comes to combing through a family will, we develop the innate ability to transform ourselves into an Emorytrained attorney in hopes that we might score a sliver of the family silver collection (and we’re not talking stainless) because we all know there’s nothing quite like heirloom sterling. And by heirloom, I mean that for

which we did not pay. Julep cups, tea services, ice buckets with staghorns (PETA be damned), salt-and-pepper shakers, platters and bread baskets. There is simply no substitute for sterling silver. We Atlantans understand from our childhood that no decent meal (read: ambrosia casserole topped with canned fried onions) could be eaten with less than hefty sterling silver. (We have inherited standards, you know.) Once we have our own offspring, we start the silver countdown. By the time our daughters like my sweet Anabelle is off to college, they will have assembled quite the collection. She may not get into the right sorority, but she darn well has the silver to shine the light on her polished place in society.

Complementing Suzanne Kasler’s prized collections in her own home are elements in traditional red and green hues, as well as Frasier fir and juniper berries. The holiday trappings are quietly elegant—a reflection of her personal style.
