WELCOME

FROM THE EDITOR

IN OUR FAMILY, winter is a time to regather and regroup. Whether it’s indulging in a book by the fire, warming small tummies with hearty soups or simply talking about the future, we give ourselves permission to be idle (as idle as a family of five can be). Call it a productive form of rest—a much-needed period between the entirely too busy fall and spring seasons. The biggest project my husband and I will tackle this year is our kitchen—which I both pine for and dread. Call it a peril of the job, but our budget is not nearly as big as our ambition, though, at the end of the day, the most important aspect, to me, is pure function and O.C.D.-like organization. Anything to give my children (dare I say husband?) the tools to be more independent in the kitchen—or, even better, to dream up their own culinary concoctions. The best compliment my 4-year-old son paid me in all of 2016 came right around the holidays, as I cut my way through an assortment of red, white and green flowers, placing them into a variety of vases for teacher gifts. “Mommy, you are the best at Christmas,” he said. My goal for 2017, of course, is to be “the best” year-round, something a new kitchen will play a huge role in. Design is empowering, after all, and we explore that phenomenon this month with highlights from the 2016 Home for the Holidays Showhouse (a massive renovation project) as well as with a brilliantly designed hunting lodge and well-traveled Atlanta home. NTERIOR DESIGNER MINHNUYET HARDY GOT HER START decorating children’s bedrooms, but she traded in color and whimsy for a smarter and more sophisticated aesthetic since finding an audience better suited to her style three years ago. “When I decided to rebrand, my first male client was living in a hotel room and needed his new condo done from top to bottom. It was such a great experience, and the end result was a turnkey home that was modern yet very livable,” says Hardy. The sleek pad led to countless referrals and a unique niche for the designer: male CEOs, urban executives, athletes and entrepreneurs seeking luxe homes that are equal parts handsome and functional. “While creating a stylish space is certainly important, finding a way to fit in all their fun gadgets is also high on the list,” she says. Hardy has teamed up with one of the city’s leading smart-home technology specialists to ensure her clients are able to switch off lights, control thermostats and more from their personal devices. She also seamlessly integrates hidden speakers and other large, tech-centric features into her designs. Despite her interiors’ decidedly masculine sensibilities, Hardy makes sure that they’re just as warm and inviting for women, and her own urban loft in Castleberry Hill is proof of that. Here, she plays up her penchant for a high-contrast color scheme that’s softened by rustic, natural materials and a mix of metals that also add a rich, sexy layer to the design. Also upping the wow factor are custom touches throughout, including a striking white backsplash in the new kitchen and a sliding barn door in the master bedroom, both reflecting her philosophy that impact is best achieved by simplicity. “I consider this loft my ultimate canvas because this is truly who I am as a designer,” says Hardy. “I believe in takings risks and always pushing the envelope.”

MARSDEN

ANTIQUES & INTERIORS

The late Jane Marsden changed Atlanta interior design when she introduced the city to fine porcelains in the 1970s. When she developed 2300 Peachtree in the ’80s, the complex quickly filled with the city’s top dealers and designers. WRITTEN BY Suzanna

Cullen Hamilton

TODAY: Jane’s original interior design business has expanded under the influence of Janie and Janie’s husband, Mike. “We continue to design fine homes for our clients while also having a large shop with fine porcelains, antiques, and a large selection of lighting and chandeliers,” says Janie.

“For every room to be pretty, it must have a good piece of furniture to give it substance and patina.”

20

1970s: The retail business of selling antiques evolved when Jane Marsden started traveling to Europe to buy fine porcelains to use as accessories in her decorating projects,” says her daughter, Janie Marsden-Willis. 1980s: After

occupying a small building on Peachtree Road near Peachtree Hills Avenue, Jane determined that Atlanta was ready to support the burgeoning antiques and interior design markets. “Building the complex of three classical, European-style commercial buildings and a residence was a tremendous undertaking, but we brought in some of the city’s top designers and dealers for a vibrant business community,” says Janie.

ON THE HORIZON: “Although interior design remains the primary focus of our business, we’re called on a regular basis to acquire estates, so we’re able to pick the best things for a constantly changing inventory.”

The Evolution

THE SECOND GENERATION: “I grew up in my mother’s business and started working for her as a teenager. By the time I went to college, I could close my eyes and determine whether a piece of porcelain was English or Chinese based simply on touching the glaze,” says Janie. “Today, Mike and I oversee all aspects of the business: acquisitions, sales, interior design and oversight of the property.”

Paces Ferry Plaza’s exterior renovations are expected to be complete this fall, and a planned 365 by Whole Foods Market will increase the size of the 63,809-square-foot center, says Leslie Mintz, senior leasing agent for owner

William Ladd. The Ladds worked with 975-plus Atlanta children and their families on their 40-foot interior mural made with 10,000-plus handmade beads. IN WHAT WAYS WILL THE ART AND ARTISTS BE INTEGRAL TO THE STADIUM’S DESIGN? The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a once-in-a-generation architectural marvel with expanses that demand the aesthetic wow to equal its grandeur. I’ve always believed art and sport harness the same sense of power and express the best of what makes us human. Both elevate the soul. HOW WILL THE ART BE REFLECTIVE OF THE ATLANTA COMMUNITY? The Mercedes-Benz Stadium is above all a civic landmark, a remarkable building cast in the character of the city itself. The stadium conveys the ideals of sport, of celebration, of community. In fact, nearly half [of the artists] are from right here in Georgia, ensuring the arena resonates with a host of regional voices. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS ITS ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY? Recently, I chatted with the dean of the SCAD School of Building Arts, and he pointed out that a building of such immense magnitude has considerable responsibility. It can make itself an integrated, organic element of the cityscape, as the Mercedes-Benz Stadium does. Art helps make that integration possible. The stadium is far more than a sporting venue; it’s a wondrous new cultural center. The Mercedes-Benz Stadium … catapults the city’s architectural prestige to new heights.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham BY NOW, YOU’VE ALL HEARD THAT THE 2017 Pantone Color of the Year is Greenery, a leafy shade of green. Meant to convey renewal and regeneration, Greenery is, according to the color institute, a shade of new beginnings, which our country could certainly use after the recent unpleasantness. (I’m not referring to the Civil War but rather the 2016 presidential election.) For some, leaf green might be the color of the moment, but for many Atlantans, green, in all of its myriad hues, has been dear to our Southern hearts for generations. Take, for example, that classic shade of bottle green, which has long been a popular choice for the front doors and shutters of our city’s most elegant houses. Darker and more mature than the sprightly Greenery (which, because of its bright appearance, doesn’t easily lend itself to use on a home’s exterior), bottle green, reminiscent of a glossy magnolia leaf, is also a long-standing companion to our antique wicker furniture, ironwork and outdoor awnings. Indoors, green is equally at home, whether it’s making a subtle design gesture or, alternatively, a stylish splash. Come to think of it, the vibrancy of Greenery takes me back to the 1970s, when many an Atlanta kitchen and sunroom were bedecked in lime-green, bamboo-print wallpaper by Louis W. Bowen or festooned with one of Kent-Bragaline’s floral-patterned fabrics in saucy shades of apple green and pink. Now defunct, both of these to-the-trade brands had such pizzazz! Why, green is even a proverbial hue in many Southern women’s closets, although, due to my pasty complexion, I steer clear of it for fear of looking jaundiced. But for those with the right coloring, green can do wonders for one’s appearance. Few have looked better in green than everyone’s favorite Southern heroine, Scarlett O’Hara, who made fashion history when she pressed her beloved Tara’s green velvet portieres into service as a fancy dress. Leave it to an enterprising Southerner—and later, her alter ego, Carol Burnett—to prove that green, when used creatively, can make a lasting impression.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMEN

FROM THE DEAN Grace to you and peace! It is a joy to welcome you to the 2017 Cathedral Antiques Show! On behalf of the people of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I also welcome you to this vibrant church community. The Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1933 and have grown tremendously since then.

The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fundraiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has raised more than $5 million for Atlanta-area charitable organizations. While the show is now considered one of the fi nest in the Southeast, this effort involves so much more than antiques! This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for First Step Staffing. This nonprofi t staffi ng agency works to secure steady and sustainabl income for individuals transitioning from homelessness. They provide support to overcome obstacles to employment and connect their associates with jobs in high-demand industries. I encourage you to learn more about First Step Staffing, how their work helps individuals and the greater good in our community, and how you might be able to help. I sincerely thank this year’s Co-Chairs, Laura Cullen and Beverly Gwynn, for doing an outstanding job. They have organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. I salute Lawrence Cowart, who, along with his wife Kathleen, agreed to serve as the Honorary Chairs of the Antiques Show, for they represent Cathedral faithfulness and generosity at its best. Sadly, and suddenly, Kathleen died last fall, and now we also dedicate this show in her memory. I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and I invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. Your presence helps us fulfill that mission of openness and hospitality! May God bless you always,

Welcome to the 2017 Cathedral Antiques Show! The 2017 Show is full of new features and new faces. Seven speakers will be making their first appearances at the Show, and we are particularly excited to welcome eleven newcomers to our existing community of distinguished antiques dealers. The antiques will be complemented this year by the addition of contemporary art and a popup garden shop, and daily lunch will be available on the main fl oor in the Gould Room adjacent to the dealer booths. We have added a Friday evening Happy Hour, too –– the perfect opportunity to meet Atlanta’s premier young interior designers and unwind with a craft beer. The Show’s tradition of great talks & book signings continues with interior design superstar Alexa Hampton; SCAD alumnus Chuck Chewning, who designed the award-winning renovation of Venice’s legendary Gritti Palace hotel; and Dallas-based designer Cathy Kincaid, whose exquisite work truly exemplifies our 2017 theme, The Art of Gracious Living. Rebecca Vizard of B. Viz Design and Atlanta favorite James Farmer will be on hand to sign the beautiful books they have written, and private librarian Kinsey Marable will tell us how to collect and organize the beautiful books we have bought. Flowers will take center stage on Friday, when former White House floral designer Laura Dowling and fl owe magazine editor in chief Margot Shaw will give presentations as part of our Design in Bloom flower festival. Our 2017 beneficiary is First Step Staffing, a nonprofi t staffi ng agency that works to secure steady an sustainable income for individuals transitioning from homelessness through job placements and wraparound support services. The Show’s contribution to First Step’s work in this community would not be possible without the support of many friends, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to the success of this effort –– most especially our patrons and sponsors; the Dean, Chapter, clergy and staff of the Cathedral; Kathleen and Lawrence Cowart; Patricia McLean; the Cathedral Antiques Show Committee and volunteers; our counterparts at First Step . . . and you. Thank you. Enjoy the Show! Laura Cullen & Beverly Gwynn 2017 Co-Chairs

H O N O R A RY C H A I R M E N LAWRENCE AND K AT H L E E N C OWA RT Lawrence Cowart and his late wife, Kathleen, have been pillars of the Cathedral since they arrived in the 1970s. Married in Virginia in 1972 and blessed in marriage by Bishop Judson Child in 1976, they raised fi ve children at the Cathedral, acolytes, choristers, and one theologian among them. Kathleen, a native of New Orleans, served the Cathedral in almost every conceivable capacity. She was an early graduate of Education for Ministry; a member of the Altar Guild, St. Veronica’s Guild, Episcopal Church Women, Daughters of the King, and the Cathedral Chapter; a founding member of the Kate Society; and a former Chair of the Cathedral Antiques Show. For the past 25 years, Kathleen devoted herself to the Cathedral Bookstore, where, as buyer and board member, she helped to craft one of the most eclectic gift collections in Atlanta. In addition to her work with the Cathedral, Kathleen received a master’s degree in Theology in 1992 from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. Lawrence, a retired executive of the Coca-Cola Company, has served the Cathedral as both Junior Warden and Senior Warden of the Chapter. During his tenure on the Chapter, he negotiated the acquisition of the Lanier House under challenging circumstances, securing for the parish the treasured space so many enjoy to this day. Lawrence has also served as Usher Team Captain and board member and general cheerleader of the Cathedral Bookstore. Always looking to move the Church in an innovative direction and add a little spice, Lawrence and Kathleen collaborated one last time on a funeral that set a new standard at the Cathedral. With brass and choir, an inspiring liturgy, and a raucous New Orleans second line parade which stopped traffic on Peachtree, Kathleen’s last event at the Cathedral was her most memorable and celebratory one. Lawrence remains a weekly presence in the pews of St. Philip’s, now with his grandson at his side. Lawrence and Kathleen have quietly invested their time and their hearts into the Cathedral for almost 40 years, and we salute them for their commitment to making a difference in this community of faith. The 2017 Cathedral Antiques Show is proud to recognize Lawrence and Kathleen Cowart as Honorary Chairs of the 2017 Show.

All of each show’s net proceeds are donated to a local charity. This year’s benefi ciary is First Step Staf ng. First Step Staffing is a nonprofit staffi ng agency that works to secure steady and sustainable income for individuals transitioning from homelessness through job placements and wraparound support services, including transportation and job coaching. First Step connects its associates with jobs in high-demand industries such as distribution, food processing, hospitality, and printing. The goal is to establish permanent, full-time employment, which in turn leads to opportunities for stable housing. First Step’s business model—social entrepreneurship—finds profi table business solutions to complex social problems. Clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small businesses rely on First Step to fill almost 1,000 job openings daily in Atlanta, and First Step’s unique methods and mission have attracted a broad base of community support that includes public and private funders, employers, community and statewide agencies and individual donors. First Step has experienced such rapid growth within the past 12 months that it is now able to send to work three times the number of individuals it could a year ago.

This elegant house possesses a dignity that belies the fact that it is barely 21 years old. Behind a front door that would not be out of place in Belgravia or on Sutton Place, spacious rooms are fi lled with rich textures complemented by jewel-toned fabrics.

The thoughtfully edited interiors of this calm house on a busy street create an oasis a world away from the hurried pace of city life. Earth tones and natural light lend a relaxed air to comfortable rooms that invite the outdoors in through large windows.

Outdoor living spaces refl ect the same sensitivity to adapting traditional architecture to contemporary lifestyles.

Clipped boxwoods and a broad front porch set a welcoming tone for this comfortable house. The interiors feature a subtle use of color and texture, a love of visual rhythm, and great attention to detail.

ASK DEBBIE AND BRAD WEITZ where they spend most of their time, and the answer is swift: at B.D. Jeffries, the Buckhead home furnishings and accessories boutique beloved for its richly textured, natural finds and eclectic assortment of antiques, gifts, ceramics and works of art. This year marks 25 years that “the store,” as the couple refers to it, has been Atlanta’s go-to shopping source for interior designers and the design-loving public alike. As any shop owner knows, the beauty (and peril) of the job includes the ability to amass piece after piece—on buying trips, at furniture markets, at antiques shows—not because there is a need or the space for a certain item but simply because he or she adores it and doesn’t want anyone else to snap it up. While the Weitzes literally have a store and a warehouse full of these finds, when it came to outfitting their own recently renovated Buckhead home, Debbie was very clear about the pieces she wanted to incorporate and the direction she wanted to go in, enlisting interior stylist and longtime friend Eleanor Roper to execute her vision. “Debbie has such an eye and penchant for the unusual,” says Roper, “and you can see that come through in the complexity and the layering of the curated approach we took to the house.” Roper’s main design objective: to combine Debbie’s classic but clean, restrained but relaxed aesthetic with the coziness and warmth of their charming 1930s English Tudor country abode. “The style of the

house, the age of the house, and the materials used—it feels like an English landscape to me,” says Roper of the exterior, “and when you walk in the door, the design is this big surprise.” Weathered, beat up, patinaed, rough-hewn, rarefied: These are all words Debbie uses to describe an aesthetic she’s made uniquely her own, one that embraces natural imperfections for a distinct contemporary-meetsrustic vibe. Selecting pieces with age, or pieces that conjure the effects of age, was top priority. The Spanish buffet in the dining room (one of the few times Debbie has reserved a piece for herself directly “off the floor”) and the carved Italian chair in the foyer (one of her first purchases after moving into the home more than 30 years ago)—these are pieces that convey her collected, time62

worn narrative. And when it came to making a statement, no walls or surfaces were off-limits for Debbie’s character-rich collections, which include African masks, pottery and shields; pewter jars; and antique vellum books. “Debbie has such a global connection to things,” says Roper, “and where there are a lot of other designers who might be persuaded to [opt for] something more new and trendy, we stuck with the complexity and the depth of older pieces. I feel like you could be anywhere in the world in that house.” The resulting, confident mix is displayed against a subtle back66

drop of muted tones, from the soft-gray finish on the floors to the darker greige painted on the doors, bookcases and breakfast room window trim. It’s this soft but layered palette, says Roper, that has “opened up the house and allowed the rooms to breathe and flow interchangeably.” And the materials added during the renovation— a stone fireplace in the living room, as well as antique, rough-hewn beams, play up this tactile effect. “The design,” says Roper, “is kind of like a beautiful marriage, with bits and pieces collected through the years on display.” A beautiful match, indeed. In this Keith Summerour–designed hunting retreat, designer Melanie Millner of The Design Atelier enlisted Atlanta furniture designer Kevin Scanlon to build the 84-inch round dining table, which seats 10 comfortably. Jason Smith of Smithworks Iron & Design crafted the iron chandelier hanging above. opposite The hue of the blooming tulips echoes the soft salmon color Millner subtly employed throughout the interior spaces.

ONE OF ARCHITECT KEITH SUMMEROUR’s specialties, especially as it pertains to his country projects, is his ability to delicately interweave his clients’ contemporary lifestyles into the framework of period floor plans. And for one family’s 4,000-square-foot hunting property near South Carolina’s Lake Wateree, the historic precedent Summerour paid homage to was the utilitarian nature of the 18th-century dogtrot. In Summerour’s present-day interpretation of the Southern vernacular, it’s the living-dining room on the main floor, and the game room above, that act as central “breezeways”—multifunctional spaces that connect to bedrooms on either side. Another modern-day spin: opening up the back side of the living space to

Millner Hunting Lodge_B.indd 75

a wall of glass doors that lead to the cantilevered porch—a design decision Summerour dictated due to the sloping nature of the property, as well as to maximize panoramic views afforded by the horseshoe-like shape of the lake below. And, while the resulting retreat is far from utilitarian, its floor plan is highly functional, designed to sleep as many as 18 but also to contain, store and launder their equipment, from clothing and boots to fishing gear and shotguns—with almost military precision. As important as its function, though, was crafting a home that would rival the thrill of the hunt itself. Enter Melanie Millner, an Atlanta interior designer and owner of The Design Atelier. Together with builder John Boyte of Charlotte, North Carolina, the trio 75

set out to infuse every crevice of the retreat with a distinct richness of materials, which collectively impart a masculine but moody flair. The strength of these materials—river-recovered sinker cypress walls throughout, and quarried granite slabs employed to create a mantel—at once echo the delight of discovery on a hunt and contribute to a subtle wow factor evident in the tiniest details. In the kitchen, for instance, shotgun shells reveal themselves in the form of trim on the zinc-topped kitchen island built by Skylar Morgan Furniture + Design. And in the powder room, Millner enlisted Kevin Scanlon to transform an antique French rifle-rack into a conversation-worthy vanity. Also noteable is the Willis Everett-sourced vintage lumber employed

above As with most properties, it’s the location that matters most. The lake “wraps this house so that it feels somewhat situated on a peninsula,” says Summerour, who designed the 45-degree-angle cantilevered porch to engage with its panoramic views. “That’s an unusual feature to be attached to what otherwise would be called a South Carolina vernacular–style cabin architecture,” the architect explains. top right A private porch off the master. right Outdoor dining here is more of a rule than the exception.

Upstairs, two bunk rooms sleep as many as 11 people. Millner and Charlotte, North Carolina, builder John Boyte created character-rich details in each of these spaces with vintage lumber architectural detailing

from Willis Everett of Vintage Lumber. right In an upstairs bathroom, Millner designed the trough vanity, which was fabricated on-site by the builder; the result is a look that’s both primitive and edgy.

in unexpected places, its natural imperfections translating as the just the right finishing touch for bunk beds, bathroom vanities and architectural trim alike. It’s this incredibly tactile canvas that allowed Millner’s signature brand of chic to shine—the lady of the house and their three children, after all, also needed to feel at home here. Each of the four main-floor bedrooms retain a more traditional flair, with a shotgun shell button-tufted, upholstered wall in one guest room and feminine elements such as a sunburst mirror and series of botanicals hanging in the master. In the living room, Millner injected a bit of the wife’s personality with the salmon-hued mohair chair by the mantel. Just as entrancing are design details such as the box bay window that opens from the kitchen bar to the covered porch; a three-tiered bunk room; or the secret passage with a trap door where the couple’s sons play when they’re not hunting. “There’s lots of detail here, but it’s masked behind rich material,” says Summerour. Millner agrees: “When you walk in, it feels so rich and thoughtful.” See Resources, Back of Book. 83

Summerour sourced the granite slabs framing the fireplace from a nearby South Carolina quarry. “We wanted to use stone from the site—preferably pieces that had already been quarried—and use them as vestiges,” says the architect.

Employing their signature fresh-meets-classic aesthetic in the combined living and dining room, Alison Womack Jowers and Cheryl Womack fashioned a serene mix of artwork, antiques and materials. In the living room, tonal neutrals combine with vivid splashes of peacock blue to create a calming palette that is counterbalanced by reflective brass and warm gold finishes. In the rectangular dining area, a sculptural banquette both encourages engagement with the adjoining living space and provides cozy seating. The duo also gleaned inspiration from the home’s architectural details, such as the living room’s intricate ceiling. “There’s a yin and yang between the softness of the furniture, fabrics and rug and the graphic ceiling detail,” notes Jowers. “It’s unexpected gestures that make a well-designed and full-of-life home.”

WEAKS INTERIORS “The primary inspiration for this room is the beautiful garden it overlooks,” says designer Carole Weaks, who sought to keep the windows and doors unobstructed to ensure the space had a constant view of the outdoors. Also paying homage to natural surroundings is Nina Campbell’s Pavilion Garden drapery fabric, which informed the room’s palette. To cultivate a collected, welcoming feel, Weaks added layers of artwork and antiques, including a 19th-century Gothic Windsor chair, a pair of 10th-century Italian marble lamps, an 18th-century Italian inlaid wood chest and a painting by artist Sergiy Hai (one of the designers’ favorite artists), which takes pride of place above the fireplace. “We started with a simple floor plan of how the room would work best, and from there we began layering until we reached a point that we felt would make a comfortable and warm family room,” says Weaks. 91

tend to be the hub of the home, I hoped to create a space that would feel comfortable to be in day-to-day and also sleek enough when entertaining,” says designer Shayelyn Woodbery, who took a fun yet sophisticated approach to decorating both spaces. In the kitchen, Kingdom Woodworks kept the aesthetic clean with white oak cabinets and quartz countertops that extend to the backsplash. Woodbery added impact and edge via lighting, artwork and mixed metals, as well as a signature touch of tribal in the Schumacher cushion fabric on the barstools (which were custom designed by Woodbery). This print also appears in the napkins in the breakfast room, where a chevron rug, spice-hued chairs and a dramatic tiered light fixture complement the classic wooden dining table. “I chose a lot of opposites to create that balance,” Woodbery notes. 93

Designer Courtney Giles built the color scheme of this cozy family den around a striking Katie Leede fabric she selected for the drapery. “I’ve wanted to use that fabric for quite some time and jumped on this opportunity,” Giles says. To that end, the designer pulled from the fabric’s inviting blue shade and coated the walls, bookshelves and cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Van Courtland Blue, which created a soothing backdrop for the room’s neutral upholstery. Adding to the inviting appeal of this intimate space are layers of personal objects such as pottery, artwork and books. In the adjoining vestibule, Giles injected lively pattern with a striped wallpaper (Lee Jofa’s Milcote in Silver/Stone). 98

global glamour DON EASTERLING AND NINA NASH, MATHEWS FURNITURE + DESIGN Designers Don Easterling and Nina Nash envisioned

the loggia as an elegant intermediary between the home’s lush backyard and its sumptuous interiors. Starting with a custom shutter partition to impart privacy, the designers drew considerable inspiration from the breezy California style of Mark D. Sikes, whose recently launched collection for Henredon mingles with signature furnishings from contemporaries Celerie Kemble and Thomas O’Brien. Sikes’ globally inspired Montecito Medallion fabric for Schumacher and a bold abstract by Brian Coleman also set the tone for this worldly gathering space, bolstered by blue-and-white porcelains, Sister Parish sconce shades and bohemian accents ranging from a 1970s peacock chair to antique African mud cloths, then peppered with vintage brass, handmade pottery and bamboo.

fresh elegance JESSICA BRADLEY, JESSICA BRADLEY INTERIORS When

designer Jessica Bradley set out to design this playful yet livable children’s room, she kept her daughter Abigail in mind for inspiration, selecting fun additions such as a swing, tepee and desk—perfect spots for a little girl to read, play and work on art projects. Because the room receives plenty of natural light, Bradley kept the color scheme bright and airy, with pops of pink. To add interest, she covered the far wall’s niche in Clay McLaurin’s Rope wallpaper and upholstered the headboard, as well as a pillow and pair of ottomans, in a lively fabric by Lisa Fine Textiles. “I really wanted something pink and pretty but also soft and elegant,” she says. “It was easy to accomplish this with Lisa Fine’s textiles paired with Clay McLaurin’s wallcovering. It’s the perfect marriage.”

sultry allure HEATHER HOGAN ROBERTS, IVY AND VINE In an ode to the illustrious Billy Baldwin, Roberts’ vision for this stately office revolved around its glamorous desk—actually a midcentury extendable dining table—and vintage porter chair recently re-covered in eye-catching zebra hide. Taking a tone-on-tone approach, she selected a plush moss-green velvet for the bucket chairs and draperies, the latter’s Greek-key trim coordinating seamlessly with the saturated teal walls—along with a vintage faux-bamboo chest lacquered to match. A pair of gilt peacock lamps and a faux-malachite box accent this sleek piece, which is presided over by an atmospheric abstract unifying all the hues in the room. A chinoiserie chandelier and mirror, plus a trio of étagères filled with exotic curiosities and jewel-toned vintage glassware, render this room quintessentially Ivy and Vine.

going bold BILL MUSSO, TODD FALCONBURY, SETH VAN DEN BERGH AND DANIEL ZIMMERMAN, MUSSO When designing the master bed-

room, the team at Musso—Bill Musso, Todd Falconbury, Seth van den Bergh and Daniel Zimmerman—took cues from Dutch architect Piet Boon. In a departure from the typical master bedroom layout, the bed was placed a few feet away from the wall rather than against it, and a decorative wall feature (custom by MUSSO) anchors the room in place of a headboard. “We were looking for an atypical layout that elevated the use and visual excitement of the room,” says van den Bergh. “The room is not very large, and floating the bed forces a more intimate layout.” The designers also outfitted the bedroom and bath with a mix of furnishings that adds to this intimate feel while catering to the well-traveled client, incorporating antique furniture, striking patterns and plenty of luster.

MICHELLE WORKMAN, MICHELLE WORKMAN INTERIORS Designer Michelle Workman took

a bold approach when designing this strikingly luxe guest room. Her first order of business was covering the walls in a dark chocolate brown (Benjamin Moore’s Tarpley Brown), which was inspired by a rich hide by Edelman Leather from the designer’s personal collection. For a touch of gilded glamour, she then commissioned local artist Steve McKenzie to create a gold mural of his trademark circle motifs. “I wanted it to have an entirely sumptuous feel,” says Workman, who achieved her goal by layering unexpected elements, such as a bison rug from Edelman, with playful fabrics, including Schumacher’s Pearl River on the daybed and Asaka Ikat in violet on the bench. “The space is very much catering to the individual who has a finer sensibility but is never dull and boring.”

A Study in Architecture

P

HILIP TRAMMELL SHUTZE might roll over in his grave if he knew that I went to college parties at his famed “Pink Palace” on West Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead; however, he’d probably spin for eternity if he knew that currently, there’s a double-wide with a view at the Malibu trailer park running for $3.5 million. Shutze’s circa-1928 Swan House remains one of Atlanta’s most renowned properties for its exquisite classical architecture, antiques and gardens. Fortunately, the site, which has played host to everything from weddings to films, was purchased by the Atlanta Historical Society in 1966 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places so that no “arriviste” could purchase it as a tear-down. James Means, Neel Reid, and Frank McCall—Shutze’s protégés and admirers—left a trail of refined homes across the Southeast to which today’s Southern architects turn for inspiration. The Left Coast, on the other hand, never developed any semblance of classical architectural elements. Instead, California oversaw the evolution of the midcentury modern style. Frank Lloyd Wright paved the way for Ray and Charles Eames, while Richard Neutra and Pierre Koenig further re-

120

fined the clean boxes of plate glass. As the South ushered in late 20th-century suburbs that retained traditional architecture, SoCal devolved into a combo platter of faux-Italian and “warm contemporary” stucco. Oh, how SoCal needed Shutze! Twenty-first century Atlanta has witnessed acclaimed designs by internationally renowned architects Richard Meier, Robert A.M. Stern and John Portman. The HOK-designed Mercedes-Benz stadium, in fact, promises to be one of the city’s greatest commercial achievements. In L.A., internationally important masterpieces are decidedly flashier. The Resnick Pavilion, designed by Renzo Piano, put the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on the map. And, in a drama that made Hollywood look dim, LACMA Board Trustee Eli Broad and his wife, Edythe, established their own museum in downtown L.A., The Broad, enlisting Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Gensler to build the $140 million structure. So what’s the architectural tale of these two cities? They’re not so far apart in their aspirations as each pursues new architectural heights, and, as a result, continue to meet in the middle.
