An exciting new museum exhibition that calls attention to 20th-century artist Salvador Dali will arrive at OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM OF ART this May. The 18th-century wallpaper covering the walls of one of England’s most beautiful and stately homes, HOUGHTON HALL—a perfect example of early 18th century Palladian style—provided the inspiration for DE GOURNAY‘s newest collection. STAY When it comes to accomodations, the luxurious Hermitage Hotel offers a chic glimpse into the city’s storied past. VISIT Nashville is known as Music City for a reason; don’t miss legendary sites such as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” the Ryman Auditorium, where everyone from Patsy Cline and James Brown to Taylor Swift and Coldplay have performed. Though the Ryman is one of Nashville’s most famous music venues, it was historic Fisk University’s Fisk Jubilee Singers who earned Nashville its iconic nickname when they performed for the Queen of England in 1873 (the a cappella group was also one of the first concerts at the Ryman). Explore musicians throughout history at the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum, or browse more than 8,000 square feet of vintage instruments at Carter Vintage Guitars (where you just might run into a well-known musician or two). And of course, the wait is always worth it at the iconic Bluebird Cafe, where some of the most legendary songwriters performed their original material.

EAT Among Nashville’s most beloved restaurants is Rolf and Daughters, which gained national recognition for its New American shared plates and rustic pastas. Its sister concept, the pizzaforward Folk, opened in spring 2018. Charleston-based Butcher & Bee expanded to East Nashville in 2015, offering up a menu of farm-fresh, simple dishes designed to share (we recommend the hummus). The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts changed everything when it opened in Paris in 1925. Between the First and Second World Wars, and with the dawn of the Machine Age, the world of design changed forever. The Parisian exhibition elevated craftspeople to artisans, and introduced the world to the idea of expensive materials used in simple applications. Fluid lines deﬁne Waterworks’ marble washstand. TRANSITIONS Previous centuries embraced design trends that were decorative and ornate. From the Egyptians to the Rococo to Art Nouveau, scrolls, flowers and gilt were the epitome of high design. However, the Machine Age emphasized efficiency, and therein the streamlined style of Art Deco was conceived. Architecture, furniture, wallcoverings, fashion, jewelry, household wares and even

MASS MARKET Although the purest forms of Art Deco are not prevalent in design today, there are elements that remain constant in every aspect of design. The simplified lines of Art Deco upholstery remain favored due to the deep curvilinear backs and steamed bentwood arms of club chairs that are both modern and retro at the same time. Geometric patterns abound in wallpapers, tile and fabrics where grand architectural elements are recreated on an appropriate interior scale. Pedestal sinks and shiny chrome bathroom fixtures may appear modern due to their clean lines, but they’re rooted in the popular designs of the 1930s. Today, rugs are reproduced in patterns appropriate to the Art Deco period, but in color schemes that are more appropriate for current design preferences. We may not incorporate many overt examples of Art Deco into interiors today, but there are always elements of the luxurious materials and refined lines that are the hallmarks of the period.

Renowned designers such as Leleu, Ruhlmann and Gray elevated formal furniture from the ornate to the refined by using beautiful materials yet with a lack of ornamentation. THE CITY’S HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY has readied itself for 2019 Super Bowl crowds— and beyond. Several properties have renovated guest rooms and amenities, while other high-end and high-profile hotel concepts have projects underway. Aged-brass fixtures, burgundy hues and velvet accents combine with its iconic chandeliers for the contemporary classic update to Midtown’s FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ATLANTA. Canvas Art Consultants in Atlanta commissioned pieces from local artists for the guest rooms, suites and corridors. “When someone is in Atlanta, they want to feel that they’re experiencing Atlanta, not just when they’re walking up and down the city,” says Yvette Thomas-Henry, regional vice president and general manager at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta. “The timing could not be more perfect with all eyes on Atlanta in anticipation of football’s biggest game in February 2019.” 26

DREAM ATLANTA, BUCKHEAD

An urban setting guides the look of the 244 guest rooms—including 18 suites and five new suites with terraces featuring dining tables, chairs and sofas—designed by New York-based Meyer Davis Studio. The refresh at the Four Seasons also includes changes to the spa and fitness center (equipped with machines such as Peloton bikes and SkillMill treadmills). A louvered pergola was added to its 7,000-square-foot outdoor space for parties, weddings and other events. Midtown’s setting and tech culture also inspired recent renovations to the RENAISSANCE ATLANTA MIDTOWN HOTEL in its

lobby, 15,000-square-foot meeting space and fitness center. The sophisticated-meets-quirky updates by Dallas-based Studio 11 Design combined concrete materials with throwback artwork and vintage accessories, like repurposed cassette tapes and floppy disks in bold colors, in updates to guest rooms. The remaking of Phipps Plaza continues with a 150-room NOBU HOTEL, underway after a fall groundbreaking event that brought to town Robert De Niro, a co-founder of the luxury lifestyle brand. The hotel, which will feature Nobu Atlanta Restaurant, a rooftop pool, conference space and a spa, is in a

MARKET CHARMER BUNGALOWS ARE BUSTING through the $1 million mark. For example, a renovated four-bedroom bungalow listed by Kim McAfee in Virginia-Highland has an asking price of $1.3 million. The popularity of the neighborhood and impeccable updates warrant the price tag for the 1920 bungalow on Virginia Avenue, says McAfee, an agent with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. Naomi Von Habersham I HAVE HAD MANY FRESH STARTS in my life, with each one typically occurring in the wake of a divorce. (Of those, I have had quite a few too.) Sometimes, I relocated in order to make a fresh start, or I purged my wardrobe in an effort to mark a new beginning. But when it comes to decorating, I purposely avoid full-fledged fresh starts. Rather than throwing out all of the old and bringing in only the new, I prefer to maintain some semblance of continuity in my home’s interiors, because to me, they are the culmination of my life’s adventures. I wouldn’t dare part with the antique French chairs that I purchased as a young bride back in the 1960s. Nor will I ever get rid of the Baker sofa that I first welcomed into my home in the early 1970s; it’s so well-made, it has at least another decade or so of life left in it. The same goes for the now-discontinued Colefax and Fowler chintz that I used for slipcovers in the mid-1980s. Granted, those covers are looking a bit shabby, but because I had the foresight to purchase extra yardage, I will use the same chintz on the next set of covers. Why consider a new fabric when I found what I loved the first time around? Now, I’m not so stuck in my ways that I never introduce new furnishings or finishes to my home. Rooms are living things (at least, in my book) and should not remain frozen in time. Over the coming year, I plan to paint the backs of my bookshelves a punchy new color, and I can’t wait to buy some Dorothy Draper fabric to give some pizzazz to a set of club chairs. And then there’s that Jim Thompson wallpaper I’ve been eyeing for my foyer. A refresh in that space would be welcome. But on the whole, I prefer a little something new mixed with a lot of something familiar. That way, when I walk into my house, I feel at home with my surroundings.

The expansive, 6,500-square-foot restaurant on Buckhead Avenue also boasts a more substantial menu (led by executive chef Matt Weinstein), featuring meat and vegetable-centered dishes in addition to snacks and shared plates. “We are fortunate with the Buckhead location to have a larger kitchen than Ponce City Market,” says True Story Brands founder Justin Anthony. “This allowed us to expand on the menu and add dishes like tandoori chicken wings, the Biltong Burger and the hot chicken sammie.” Expanding the bar program was also important, he says; the beverage program (helmed by beverage director Sean Gleason) offers a 40-seat bar, more than 270 unique liquors and “one of the largest absinthe selections in the South.” The space itself—designed by Kelly Wolf-Anthony, Justin’s wife, and constructed by builder Michael Ladisic—pairs cosmopolitan sophistication with warm, masculine touches—think dark wood, leather seats and a lounge nook with board games. “We wanted the restaurant to have a city vibe while keeping it warm and authentic,” Justin says. biltong-bar.com

Yes, this is a beautiful and sacred space, but we are especially a vibrant church community. The Cathedral of St. Philip was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta. We moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932 and have grown tremendously since then.

The Cathedral Antiques Show began as a small and seasonal fundraiser organized by our parish Episcopal Church Women. Their work—and ministry—now requires a year-round commitment and has raised more than $5 million for Atlanta-area charitable organizations. While the show is now considered one of the finest in the Southeast, this effort involves so much more than antiques! This is a powerful ministry of outreach. The proceeds this year are designated for Wilderness Works, and will provide program support and camper scholarships for homeless kids to “get out” in nature at Summer Camps, go on backcountry Field Camps, and escape their devastating circumstances at the safe haven of Wilderness Works City Camp. I sincerely thank this year’s Chair, Elspeth Willcoxon, for doing an outstanding job. She has organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this weeklong event. I salute Lynne and Warren Wood who agreed to serve as the Honorary Chairs, and Margaret Bosbyshell and Clary Bosbyshell who serve as the Honorary Design Chairs of the Antiques Show, for they represent true Cathedral faithfulness and generosity. I also thank each of you for visiting the Cathedral today, and I invite you to return for other occasions of service and prayer. We are open daily, and this is truly a house of prayer for all people. F RO M T H E CHAIR London Calling! I am thrilled to welcome you to a show inspired by London and the English countryside. The 48th Annual Cathedral Antique Show offers something for everyone, from antiques to flowers to interior design to art , to home tours and to parties! We have a great group of 28 dealers, our Flower Festival, vignettes designed by six interior designers, and our popular Tour of Homes. New this year is our Young Collectors Committee, who will host the first annual Oyster Roast, followed the next day by a Young Collectors’ Home Tour. The Show’s tradition of talks and book signings continues with featured speakers Ben Pentreath, Nina Campbell, Paula Pryke and Charlie McCormick. On Saturday, we have a panel that includes Norman Askins, Susan Bozeman and John Howard to discuss a classic Tudor home project. I cannot express how happy I am to introduce Wilderness Works as our 2019 beneficiary. Wilderness Works helps Atlanta’s most disadvantaged youth thrive through outdoor nature experiences ranging from visits to local parks and to summer camps and hiking. I would like to thank so many people, especially Jenny McClure, chair-elect, who has made the planning for this event so much easier and loads of fun. We are deeply grateful to the past chairs who have supported us all year; the Cathedral Antiques Show Committee who has worked tirelessly to make this a great event; the Dean; the Chapter; the Clergy and staff of the Cathedral; the Sponsors and Patrons; the many dedicated volunteers; and, of course, all of you who will attend. H O N O R A RY C H A I R S LY N N E & WA R R E N WO O D Humility is the first word that comes to mind for our 2019 Honorary Chairs, Lynne and Warren Wood. Longstanding members of the Cathedral, the Woods have been active in manyaspects of St Philip. From the Count Committee to the Tour of Homes, altar guild to usher team, the Woods have done it all. Lynne Wood has been volunteer extraordinare at the Cathedral. Whether it’s the Antique Show or the Tour of Homes, Lynne has worked and taken leadership positions. She regularly serves on Altar Guild and Finance Count Team as well as serving on several Stewardship Teams. She has been an officer in Druid Hills Garden Club and St. Elizabeth’s Guild. Lynne has a special place in her heart for learning having been a teacher for 37 years, 32 of which were at Pace Academy. In keeping with her talents, Lynne has tutored at L’Amistad After School program and also Agape After School Program. No matter where Lynne volunteers, she is always a bright light and willing and able to do anything that you ask of her. Warren has been a communicant of St Philips for 65 years. Retired from Sales and marketing, Warren is certainly not slowing down. If you look at his resume, any committee at St Philips has benefitted from Warren’s extensive experience. Usher team, Memorial gardens, Friends of Cathedral Music have all benefitted from his time and talents. Warren has volunteered for many homeless charities including Feet on the Street (shoes for the Homeless), Pine Street Shelter food server, and is a regular for the Homeless Requiem Dinner as an usher and dinner server.

Warren is a University of Georgia graduate and Lynne, an Auburn Graduate which makes for an interesting weekend once a year. The Woods have been married for 45 years. They met on a blind date to an Atlanta Falcons Game, and the rest is history. They have 4 children, from Warren’s first marriage, and 5 grandchildren including one Eagle Scout. They enjoy hiking near their home in the North Georgia mountains, traveling and entertaining all of their friends and family. H O N O R A RY D E S I G N C H A I R S MARGARET & C L A RY B O S B Y S H E L L Margaux Interiors Limited is a full-service design team with extensive experience in residential and light commercial design projects. Their mission is to create and chic and timeless look for your space that complements the client’s style, needs and vision. They work closely with their clients to achieve their design goals, using high quality materials and an eye for design. Jobs are custom tailored to the client’s aesthetic vision and we are comfortable doing a variety of looks. They enjoy using antiques, art, contemporary furniture mixed with classically designed pieces. Margaret Bosbyshell started her interior design business in 1982 in Atlanta. A University of Georgia graduate who studied design in London and at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Margaret’s designs can be found in homes in the Southeast, along with homes across the country—from a loft in Tribeca, to a circa-1810 house in Charleston, to a cottage on Nantucket. Clary Bosbyshell, Margaret’s daughter, grew up immersed in the world of design. Clary developed her eye for aesthetics at a young age with her mother amongst antique markets, art galleries, swatch books and fabric samples. Clary is a University of Georgia graduate who studied design in Cortona, Italy. Clary initially spent a few years working in the world of fashion merchandising further honing her eye for smart and stylish design. Ben Pentreath’s architectural and interior design studio has developed a powerful reputation. Pulling from a variety of disciplines, his work is at once classic and playful with a serious nod to scale, scope and budget. Because of Ben’s beautiful feel for the classics, he has worked with the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Ben Pentreath is a regular contributor to many publications as well as penning his own weekly newsletter, Pentreath-Hall Inspiration and is a noted author of several books. Charlie McCormick is a talented floral designer and landscaper. Raised in New Zealand, Charlie’s grandparents greatly influenced his horticultural tastes. His creativity is on display in the gardens of the parsonage in Dorset that he shares with his husband, Ben Pentreath. Charlie is also proprietor of McCormick Flowers and Wares in London. A classic example of Philip Trammel Shutzeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible talent, this home exudes the original charm and elegance of the time it was built in 1937. His penchant for symmetry is evident in the architecture of this beautiful home. Rich colors chosen by Shutze bring the rooms to life as you enjoy distinguished settings with fireplaces aglow, floor-length windows (many of which have handles to lift them up for walk through entry to the gardens beyond), and a Shutze signature grand, curved staircase in the front entry. The expansive gardens behind the house host a walking path which is a surprising showcase of color and grace.

Privately hidden from Northside Drive on family property, this circa-1951 home originally belonged to former Atlanta mayor Ivan Allen and his wife Louise. Grandson Beau and his interior designer wife, Allison Allen embraced the opportunity to redecorate and redefine the house with a stunning transformation. The home is a blend of classic blue and white accents, from vases, lamps and china to the beautiful wallpaper in the front entry and breakfast room. Original furniture and light fixtures from Louise and Ivan were incorporated by Allison into the new design. Asian-inspired wallpaper panels are a tribute to the original handpainted Japanese murals.

Danielle Rollins transformed an outdated 1970s Georgian house with good bones but zero curb appeal into to a traffic-stopping Southern family home. The house is layered with bold choices of color and a mix of decadent pattern and texture. A dazzling array of silk velvet sofas, Oriental rugs, chinoiserie tapestries, decadent wallpapers, ikat fabrics, and animal prints mingle with elements such as tassels and trims, grasscloth walls, a lacquered ceiling, and a well curated art collection. This very personal home is reflective of the stylish tastes of the nationally known interior and garden designer, who has her own capsule clothing collection and lifestyle books.

Built in 1910, Villa Lamar is an Italian Renaissance mansion designed by nationally-known architect George O. Totten, Jr., for U.S. congressman William Bailey Lamar. With a red tile roof and a Palladian style loggia entrance, it is the only identified work of Totten in Georgia. The Philadelphia firm of Meehan and Sons designed the propertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s landscape in 1911, which included formal terraced gardens at the rear of the house. In 1958, a majority of the estateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s original 200 acres was subdivided for the Kingswood development. Villa Lamar was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for its architectural significance. 19

With architectural details that are absolutely breathtaking, the home is still very comfortable with formal rooms that are used daily. Norman Askinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; charming attic restoration is reminiscent of something from a British novel. Overlooking a large flat yard with greenhouse and gorgeous pool is a magnificent solarium with exquisite ironwork detailing.

Liz Godwin knew that the kitchen design was a success when most visitors ended up in the space on opening night. For her first showhouse, Godwin blended elegant antiques and nostalgic touches with modern styling and conveniences. The bold scale of the pyramid motif, walnut wood and a high gloss on the island reinvent the traditional elements of cabinetry by pushing the envelope toward modernism, says Kingdom Woodworks’ Marcel Olariu. Brass and polished nickel work in harmony in the cabinet lining, hardware, lighting and custom vent hood. Godwin accented the room with personal collections and heirlooms, such as silver salt and pepper shakers, which added patina to the approachable, inviting space. Blue tones in the stools’ boutique fabric, an antique rug and drabware plates (belonging to Godwin’s mother) contrast against the kitchen’s sleek functionality. “With all of the ambient noise of a busy lifestyle, I wanted a calming surrounding where the family could relax and regroup after a hectic day.” Or on opening night. —Lori Johnston

CHIC CENTRAL LAUREN DELOACH INTERIORS

The combination of pattern and color was key for interior designer Lauren DeLoach, who worked hand-in-hand with Massachusetts-based textile house Peter Fasano to create an exciting floral pattern through a custom color palette of terracotta and soft blue. The soothing but sophisticated palette revealed itself through floor-to-ceiling floral draperies, which grounded the room and made its grand proportions feel much more intimate in scale. The draperies also served as a chic definition of the lofty space, which opens to the kitchen, foyer and dining room. Peter Fasano’s Georgia stripe and Lauren check (named after the designer), complemented the hand-screened floral fabric, and contributed to this room’s peaceful feel, while a soft terracotta velvet on the upholstered ottoman also added dimension. Also grand: a generously sized fireplace, which DeLoach softened by filling it with things she loved, such as a basket, birch logs and a collection of oversized pinecones. The designer commissioned the landscape above the fireplace from artist Lee Brooks; the painting complements the space with its soft greens, blues and soft salmon undertones. With the study situated right at the entrance of the home, Chris Holt knew the space needed to make an impression. “If you heard ‘moody, masculine study’ you probably wouldn’t imagine this space, which is exactly what I wanted,” says the designer. “It’s a fresher take on a library, achieved by skirting traditional choices like dark lacquered walls and heavy tufted leather furniture.” To counterbalance the room’s lack of natural light, Holt kept the walls light (thanks to Sherwin-Williams’ Gateway Gray), adding masculinity via geometric cubist figure paintings, which served as the basis for the room’s color palette. While the space reads neutral, Holt kept things interesting by incorporating accessories that were packed with color—rusty orange, deep teal and verdant green. Showhouse honorary chair Carole Weaks took a fearless approach when designing the home’s dining room, which she layered with eye-catching elements and antique treasures. “I know it’s one room that you can typically use something other than a beige color,” says the designer, who opted to paint the walls Sherwin-Williams’ Kale Green. Providing a sense of contrast are black-and white pieces such as abstract artwork, a geometric Stark rug and loop dining chairs, which were upholstered in Designers Guild fabric and painted a glossy black to emphasize their eye-catching shape. “I love the combination of green, black, and white and knew it could work in this space,” Weaks says. The curved cove ceiling in the main floor master bedroom was a dominating architectural trait that designer Jessica Bradley fully embraced. Inspired by the shape of the space and the scenes of nature outside the window, Bradley devised a soothing palette of green, charcoal and winter white to compose a cozy bedroom. “Choosing a wallcovering that added texture and warmth to the room accentuated the curve, but it made you feel like you were enclosed in a little cocoon,” says Bradley. The drapery’s handsome Cowtan & Tout fabric, which she had long adored, sets the scene. Next, Bradley layered in a textured wallcovering, a charcoal velvet bed and accessories in materials such as horn, leather and wood to create an inviting, gender-neutral space. The reeded fronts and brass framing of Kingdom Woodworks’ cabinetry drew designer Chris Socci to a vintage 1970s hummingbird wallpaper by Cole & Son, and from there, the space evolved into a French garden theme. The wallpaper—which reappears on the chandelier shades—and silk Brunschwig & Fils drapery frame the organic yet dramatic bathroom. “While it’s vintage, we still brought a very modern scale to those pieces,” Socci says. He placed a bronze table in the shape of a lily pad at the tub’s edge, along with velvet ottomans that he envisioned as stepping stones. An iron mirror gives the impression of a garden gate, and its elegance is carried into the high-style closet by Artisan Custom Closets, outfitted with a botanical print roman shade and pieces from Danielle Rollins’ collection. “I wanted to design a space that would provide functionality and beauty; a room the homeowner could feel beautiful getting dressed in,” says Artisan’s Andrea Lively. Socci sums up his debut showhouse experience: “Everyone just had such a spirit of making this home collectively beautiful.” —Lori Johnston

Margaret Kirkland envisioned an English winter garden when she saw the light-filled breakfast room’s floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors. Bunny Mellon’s greenhouse at her Oak Spring Farm in Virginia easily served as the springboard for Kirkland and Zachary Weiler. A hand-painted horizontal stripe fabric by friend and fabric designer Brian Carter served as the perfect textile interpretation of Mellon’s greenhouse, Kirkland says. The green-blue of the drapery was a perfect pairing with the pool views. She envisioned a family huddling together around the oval farm table for puzzles, homework and meals, whether relaxing in the round-back Brighton Pavilion-style chairs or the rustic painted Swedish garden bench. “This was going to be a main gathering space for the family,” she says. Often the butler’s pantry and laundry room are hidden, but designer Lauren Lowe admits she was “obsessing” over the view from the kitchen into these ultrafunctional spaces. “I wanted the laundry room to feel more light and bright and airy. I wanted the butler’s pantry to feel more sophisticated,” she says. In the butler’s pantry, Kingdom Woodworks covered custom cabinets in a highgloss gray with touches of brass. “It becomes a feature, not an afterthought,” says Kingdom Woodworks’ Marcel Olariu. For her showhouse debut, Lowe selected Schumacher’s Feathers wallpaper in zebra on the butler’s pantry walls and ceiling, and the historical yet fresh Pyne Hollyhock print in charcoal for the laundry room. Geometric brass lanterns designed by Suzanne Kasler create cohesiveness between both rooms. “There’s an opportunity to make every space in your home tell your story,” says Lathem Gordon of GordonDunning, the design team responsible for a quartet of spaces. Personal touches and bits of the unexpected can be found throughout. “In every space, in varying amounts, there were both classic elements and traditional elements, paired with unpredictable, quirky or funky components,” says Cate Dunning. GordonDunning’s “boom pow” factor is seen in the fabric-covered walls paired with an antique Asian portrait in the baker’s passage. The oversize vine pattern by Anna French continues via the table skirt in the hall. In the pantry, the duo arranged white serveware, framed recipes from their families and an antique pig pitcher atop walnut shelves by Kingdom Woodworks. Likewise, the back entry was layered with traditional patterns in the drapes and an upholstered bench with drawers, along with a touch of the unusual in artwork, which includes an antique fox portrait. COASTAL COOL K KONG DESIGNS

When tasked with decorating the home’s loggia, Kristin Kong drew inspiration from the rich colors she remembered from a trip to Greece she took with her husband. “Of course the biggest detail was capturing the intensity of the blue skies against the white buildings and I think the Thibaut fabrics we selected definitely achieved that,” says Kong. Her starting point was the brand’s Deco Mountain pattern, which she used on a pair of slipcovered chairs in front of the fireplace. “The jagged design reminded me of the steep cliffs of Santorini,” she says. Kong kept the space grounded with wicker and wood accents, antiques and pops of gold. “I always like to add interesting pieces into the mix—definitely furniture and accessories that can feel a little retro—like the rattan sofa frame and the funky antique lamp on the bar,” Kong says. Though the lack of walls outdoors can make incorporating artwork a challenge, an eye-catching mirror by abstract mirror artist Stacy Milburn solves this problem, serving as a focal point above the fireplace. Adding a dose of California cool are clean-lined tables and a chic outdoor floor lamp. “While Greece was my initial inspiration, I thought the space took on a California vibe as it progressed,” the designer says. —Claire Ruhlin

Masculine and feminine elements mingle in lead showhouse designer Lauren Davenport’s upstairs sitting room. Swathed in Sherwin-Williams’ Roycroft Bottle Green, the room’s moody palette is balanced by a wall of expansive windows and the adjacent, airy stairwell. Davenport also incorporated rust tones—such as the velvet pillows and leather chairs—throughout to complement the dark green walls, ceiling and trim. “The color palette and furnishings in the room lent to a masculine feel that was cozy and sexy,” says the designer. A showstopping painting of Wonder Woman by artist Mark Boomershine serves as the room’s focal point and “provides a punch of femininity that was bold enough to greet visitors as they ascended the main staircase,” says Davenport. “I originally had selected another piece of artwork for the large window area, but when I came across Wonder Woman through Spotlight on Art, I knew she had to live in my space.” The designer also dialed up the personality through classic yet fresh accessories, such as traditional intaglios reimagined with round black mattes, and a geometric Jim Thompson drapery fabric. “This kept the design fresh and unexpected,” Davenport notes. Wyeth Ray Interiors matched the architectural drama of the upstairs master bedroom’s peaked ceiling and expansive window with masculine, overscaled and slightly Gothic furnishings and antiques. “If you want to have a very dramatic moment, which I feel like you should strive for in a showhouse, then the main event needed to be that window,” says designer Whitney Ray. The massive yet relaxed roman shade and sophisticated cream drapery set the backdrop for heavy wood furnishings, a modern dark walnut bed by design partner Joel Kelly and integrated metal components. A Cowtan & Tout grasscloth envelops the room in warmth and calmness, while champagne tones and whimsical art help lighten the mood. The bathroom’s design embraces a softer side with a trellis pattern on the gray cabinets and a botanical wallcovering that meanders around a marbled wet room, which created the opportunity to use more glass and a decorative wall treatment within the combination shower and tub area. “A wet room functions better and looks better than a shower and separate tub in the right context,” says Kingdom Woodworks’ Marcel Olariu. “We love traditional design just as much as we love modern design,” Ray says. “There’s something to be said for finding a way to really put the two together.” —Lori Johnston

Natural light and views from the upstairs bedroom made Mandy Mayers and Jessica Roan, co-owners of Buckhead boutique Interior Philosophy, feel happy and serene, and the design duo transferred those feelings into an upbeat, eclectic room layered with texture. “The room was designed to feel cheery, not too serious,” said the designers, who envisioned a well-traveled individual surrounding herself with fabrics from India and Turkey, rugs from Morocco, antiques from France, and baskets and accessories from Africa. Shades of magenta and other berry tones mingle with earthy neutrals, seen in the feather art, vintage rugs and canopy bed with a romantic custom fabric roof. To add interest, they combined several textures—wood, raffia, grasscloth, beads and metallics—as the bedroom transitioned to the bathroom with cabinets by Kingdom Woodworks. Punctuation points included an acrylic chair at an antique French table that serves as a desk for work. “We didn’t want to block the beautiful window,” Mayers says. —Lori Johnston

Although initially daunted by the square footage of the showhouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s upstairs bonus room, Kati Hardwick, in-house designer of the venerable Buckhead boutique B.D. Jeffries, opted to divide the room into three separate, but equally chic entertaining spaces. On one end of the room, a ping pong table with a burnt amber finish, leather netting and hand-forged iron legs anchored the space, complemented by a bar and tall pub tables. At the center of the room, a generously sized game table, surrounded by a banquette, armchairs and chic stools beckon guests to sit and stay a while, and in the third area, an overscale, performance-fabric sectional, and a smaller game-table nook provide a casual resting spot for movie night. Unifying the three entertaining spaces is a large Eve and Staron sisal, and the room, painted in a cool, Sherwin-Williams Dovetail, extends a warm welcome thanks to luscious layers like the Icelandic sheep skin rugs and a textural hemp patchwork rug. Also contributing to its sense of intimacy and patina are the various warm wood tones in the form of a hand-carved congo table and bleached antique chest. 104

YOUTHFUL RETREAT MONTGOMERY GRATCH INTERIORS

For this upstairs young adult bedroom, Julie Montgomery and Michele Gratch of Montgomery Gratch Interiors imagined their client as “a sophisticated high school senior who was well traveled, loved art and fashion,” says Gratch. Their jumping point was the black-and-white accent wall, which was hand-stenciled by textile designer Kari Fisher. “We chose one of her patterns, changed the scale and collaborated with her to achieve the block-printed look for the focal wall,” Montgomery says. From there, the duo layered the space with colorful, abstract art and accessories, while pops of black in the custom headboard and drapery offset the sweetness of the blush accessories and walls (painted Sherwin-Williams’ Nearly Peach). Champagne-hued chairs and a soft, neutral rug provide softness. “We wanted to show that all though black can be strong it can also read as a neutral and not to be afraid of it,” explains Gratch. When making plans for the foyer, Randy Korando and Dan Belman of Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts knew they wanted something fun and unexpected, so they settled on a grounding palette of pink, cranberry and silver. “Having designed and installed the exterior decorations of numerous Home for the Holidays Showhouses over the years in more traditional style, I wanted to do something a bit more fun and unexpected,” says Korando. The duo also love mixing newer items with antiques, such as an 18thcentury console table, which was made from a remnant of a German 18th-century bridge destroyed by bombing during World War II. Also decorating the space is a collection of unique glassware—comprised of an antique French apothecary jar, crystal newel posts and antique leech bowls. Adding a personal touch are two photos of Korando and Belman’s twin rescue horses, photographed by artist Brandon Luther. “I always like to use pieces that clients have a personal relationship with when I do design work. That also holds true for us personally when we do showhouses,” says Korando. —Claire Ruhlin

PRETTY IN POWDER SUSAN BRADY INTERIORS

With the goal of creating a space suitable for an elegant evening party or a casual daytime gathering, designer Susan Brady chose a timeless peacock and floral wallpaper by Clarke & Clarke and a mix of organic and contemporary pieces for the foyer powder room. “I was thinking about a space that would be welcoming to a lot of different people,” says Brady, noting that the wallpaper specifically was selected for its natural motif. A pale pink ceiling provides a candlelit, feminine glow and is outlined with a green ribbon trim, a detail Brady loved for its simplicity and rarity. A winter gold chandelier from Capital Lighting gives the impression of a birdcage, echoing the pattern on the walls without skewing kitschy. ODE TO ART LISA JOUBLANC INTERIORS

“It was a little daunting to design a 50-foot hallway,” admits designer Lisa Joublanc, who decorated both the upstairs hallways as well as the laundry room. John Fernandez saturated an upstairs bedroom with a dark and fashionforward hue; color is a signature of the Cuban-born designer’s spaces. Deep blue-greens evoke hues of New England, where Fernandez recalls having one of his best naps on a crisp fall afternoon while visiting Nantucket for a wedding. “Green is having a moment,” he says. To capture the traditional feel of a country bed-and-breakfast—and encourage a long winter’s nap—Fernandez blended weathered antiques, reproductions, modern elements and oversize pieces. Antique chairs with architectural metal backs float beside an X-base oak table set at just the right height for a cup of tea. A map of Paris and a classic four-poster Italian bed topped with vintage velvet ikat pillows takes center stage. “These deep, darker colors lend themselves to saying goodnight—or at least a nice nap in the middle of the day.” —Lori Johnston 111

For the 10th annual Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles partnered with Harrison Design and Steve McGlamery Custom Homes in partnership with Blackstone Custom Homes. The newly constructed 8,232-square-foot Buckhead estate sat on a 1.5-acre lot; inspired by the site, the English country abode featured a locally sourced limestone and brick exterior and open spaces filled with daylight. The architectural design team—Rick Hatch and Frank Heery—drew from the work of 19th-century British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in creating the five-bedroom home, which featured a sweeping roof, gables, symmetrical design and a long gallery of windows on the second floor. Two separate stair halls and 11-foot ceilings further opened up the space. In the living area, a massive 6-foot-wide fireplace—one of three in the home—befits the grand space and English vernacular. An expansive loggia with a fireplace and separate grilling terrace overlooked the pool and trees in the distance.

SENSATIONAL SHOWHOUSE

SURPRISES

GENERALLY SPEAKING, I DON’T LIKE SURPRISES, but the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2018 Home for the Holidays Showhouse was full of captivating moments. First, the house was a sea of color: greens, blues, browns, ochres, reds and various shades of purples and pinks spilled from the rooms. When was the last time we saw a bathroom or hallway swathed in rich blues or a dining room draped in emerald green? Chris Socci, Gordon Dunning and Carole Weaks proved that one doesn’t have to live by the ocean or mountains to amp up the colors and bring them inside. Even the subtle hues found in the study and butler’s pantry read richly, and Chris Holt and Lauren Lowe proved that classic hues are anything but one-note. Furthermore, the rooms were executed down to the final details. Layered and interesting, each space reflected its designer’s aesthetic, yet the house also felt composed—not an easy feat for a showhouse of this size. Bicoastal Atlanta artist 120

Mark Boomershine brought Wonder Woman, in all of her golden glory, to Lauren Davenport Imber’s rich brown sitting room, while Margaret Kirkland, Lauren DeLoach and Jessica Bradley exemplified how to subtly integrate stylized florals, textures and tones. From the powder room to the kitchen to the loggia and bedrooms, each space carried distinct perspective. And thanks to architecture by Harrison Design, the house blended classic lines with open flow. I usually depart showhouses with a design nugget or two, but this year I departed Home for the Holidays feeling rejuvenated about Atlanta’s interior design prowess. It’s energizing to see designers taking risks with color and pattern—but in a sophisticated and effortlessly elegant manner. The only downside? I’m stumped with where to begin in my own house. Blue or green; floral or texture? I’m not Wonder Woman, but I may need her portrait to remind me to be fearless in my next decorating phase.
