Natural Splendor

PORTRAIT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES

GREENERY: IT’S NOT JUST PANTONE’S official color of the year—it’s also a hue we’re fortunate to engage with, just outside our window, at least nine months a year. Reinvigorating, restorative, rejuvenating? You bet. Those are words taken straight from the color authority’s annual announcement, but nature’s inherent allure is hardly lost on Atlantans. I personally take much enjoyment out of the fact that our temperate climate allows us to experience season after season of blooms—in an almost cascading effect—from jonquils in February and dogwoods and azaleas in April to late-blooming camellias and winter-flowering cherries. This month, we visit the north Atlanta estate of a master gardener (page 56) whose passion for flowers has not only brought her across the world, but also resulted in the creation of one of the prettiest gardens in our city thanks to a borderline obsession with cultivating a variety of blooms (not to mention bird houses!). We also tour a Lewis “Buck” Crook–designed Buckhead classic (page 66), where creating an enviable connection between the indoors and out was a major focus of its well-heeled renovation. March also feels like a bit like a coming out party for AH&L. We’re sponsoring or producing countless events this month (visit atlantahomesmag.com/events), and we hope to see you there. This spring, indulge in whatever “greenery” makes you happy—whether it’s a kale Elizabeth Ralls, Editor in Chief salad or a lime-infused margarita! @elizabeth_ralls | twitter @eliz_ralls | instagram

OETGEN

For 40 years, Atlanta’s visual virtuoso has made bold brushstrokes in art and design. WRITTEN BY Suzanna

International Influences The designer has a unique ability to blend contemporary and traditional elements with pieces by both international and local artisans. The resulting interiors mesmerized both collectors and the media with their sophisticated mix of fascinating objects set within precisely measured architecture.

Cullen Hamilton

Accolades Oetgen grew up in New York and attended the University of Georgia, where he took his first painting classes. After receiving a degree in interior design from Georgia State University, he opened his Atlanta office in 1977. Travel has long influenced Oetgen’s aesthetic, and it’s honed his eye for eclectic interiors infused with the old and new, the bold and subtle.

The Turning Point During the ’80s Oetgen brought a contemporary edge to traditional Atlanta interiors. Equally inspired by antique French and contemporary Memphis Group furniture, he infused a wide array of pieces into his projects, producing rooms with wit and wisdom. 16

Colorful Canvases Oetgen’s first painting show was at Atlanta’s Heath Gallery in the late ’70s. His large-scale oil paintings have been exhibited at Art Basel in Miami and Art Southampton. Today, Oetgen is expanding into photography with massive images reaching 6 feet high.

In His Own Words “I still draw everything–from the architecture to the interiors,” says Oetgen, noting that few people still take pen to paper when creating.

Early Stages

Named ADAC’s Southeastern Residential Designer of the Year more than once, and a perennial House Beautiful Top 100 Designer, Oetgen is renowned for residential and commercial projects alike, including Peasant restaurants and Trois. Additional design projects include furniture and fabric lines; place settings for Tiffany’s; and others.

“I’ve never worried about going outside the lines,” says Oetgen of his ability to integrate disparate pieces into a room for a cohesive, sophisticated whole. clockwise, from above A canvas by Oetgen pops beside an antique Italian chandelier. The designer incorporated a bit of whimsy into this cheery morning room. This spacious solarium maintains a feeling of symmetry, balance and style. EXCELLENCE

ON MARCH 4, 2017, the Southeast Chapter of the INSTITUTE OF CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE & ART will present the 11th annual PHILIP TRAMMELL SHUTZE AWARDS recognizing excellence in architecture, interior design, artisanship, landscape design, restoration and service. Calder Loth, a dedicated preservationist and the retired senior architectural historian of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, will emcee the juried event, which will also pay homage to Atlanta landscape architect Edward Daugherty with the conferral of a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Southeast Chapter

is one of the ICAA’s earliest chapters and is dedicated to the appreciation and advocacy of classical architecture in our region. Founded in 2004, the Southeast chapter is led by an innovative board of trustees and holds a diverse membership of classical enthusiasts in the design trade in states such as Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. classicist-se.org

HEN THE RESIDENCES at Mandarin Oriental, Atlanta, enlisted Michael Habachy to put his signature stamp on a model unit, the designer knew he wanted to cultivate a fresh yet comfortable retreat that blended modern design with Mandarin Oriental’s globally inspired sophistication. “I love creating a clean space, but the key to making it inviting is adding lots of layers and textures,” says Habachy, who kept most of the walls and furnishings neutral so as not to compete with the existing architecture, designed by Harrison Design’s Robert Tretsch, and the sky-high views. 26

This serene palette is carefully punctuated throughout with contrasting pops of red and black; Eastern-inspired accents such as African tribal accessories, a pair of brass Tibetan drums and a vintage bronze urn; and an array of textures in the form of handhewn wood, lacquer and patinaed brass. Habachy cultivated a decidedly moodier feel in the den, which is swathed in one of the designers’ favorite shades of gray, Benjamin Moore’s Day’s End. A convertible sofa allows the space to double as a guest room, while a custom desk and sculptural accents make it a comfortable retreat for homeowners. “We wanted it to feel like a boutique hotel yet also warm and inviting,” notes Habachy, who achieved this in the lightfilled bedroom by balancing the room’s cool gray tones with warmer touches, such as the custom walnut bed frame and side tables. “The Mandarin Oriental is a world leader in luxury and sophistication, so we wanted this residence to ultimately reflect that brand and appeal to the well-traveled, global homeowner,” Habachy notes. Considering the unit sold within just a few months of completion, it’s safe to say: Mission accomplished. See Resources, Back of Book.

A desk by Interlude Home and a vintage zebra-hide chair create a fun work nook in the bedroom. A pair of custom chairs offers a comfortable reading nook by the living room window. Habachy customdesigned the bed and bedside cabinets to add a sense of warmth to the modern-minded bedroom. A faux-fur throw from Restoration Hardware, stools by Kelly Wearstler for E.J. She selected the vibrant taffeta drapes after falling hard for them when she placed them in a client’s home. left Among the dining room’s beautiful vignettes is a treasured vintage ice bucket and a collection of Hermès boxes atop a refinished cabinet from Scott Antique Markets. right A custom orange headboard adds a striking splash of color in the mostly neutral master bedroom. opposite, from left The foyer gets the golden treatment thanks to a luxe grasscloth wallcovering and a refinished vintage chair. To add some soft contrast to the living room’s existing floor-toceiling pecky cypress woodwork, Schoenberger selected a serene palette that was inspired by rocks she collected during a stroll along the beach in San Francisco.

THEY SAY TIMING IS EVERYTHING, and that was certainly true for Jennifer Schoenberger. The longtime design enthusiast was feeling stifled and less than inspired in her corporate sales job when the perfect opportunity presented itself: Schoenberger’s neighbor enlisted her to help decorate her new home, and thus a new career was born. “I’ve always had a deep-rooted passion for interiors, and friends and family were constantly calling me to help select paint colors or pick out the perfect dining chairs,” says Schoenberger. “But this was my first legitimate client, and everything really took off from there.” The interior decorator now keeps busy creating homes that she describes as “glam meets rock ’n’ roll with tons of cozy.” A glimpse of Schoenberger’s style can be found in her own home, where unexpected color combinations mix effortlessly with bold patterns and textures in a manner that feels utterly fresh. In the dining room, black walls help ground green taffeta drapes and built-ins featuring glimmering graphic wallpaper. Meanwhile, an orange tufted headboard in the master bedroom adds vibrant color among the more natural and earthy elements. “The recipe for great design is all in the mix. It’s how you create something truly special,” says Schoenberger, who describes most rooms in her home as a “quilt” of her projects. But for all of the eccentric appeal that her designs hold, she also places great emphasis on infusing each home with meaningful details. Hence, a beloved chandelier purchased in New Orleans on her 10th wedding anniversary holds court in the dining room. “I abide by living with what you love and cherish,” she says. The decorator documents her design musings—plus trips to market, project updates and more—on her blog, Vreeland Road, which she launched in 2010 and named after her late mother, an artist. “From an early age, she taught me to always think outside of the box. In turn, I learned the value of originality and strive to bring that to each project—small or large,” says Schoenberger. INTERIOR DECORATION Jennifer Schoenberger, Jennifer Schoenberger Design. Naomi Von Habersham “A GARDEN IS A LOVESOME THING, GOD WOT!” So wrote 19th-century British poet T.E. Brown, whose affection for the garden is one many of us share. Despite the fact that I was not blessed with a green thumb—a difficult admission for someone whose forebears were famous for their gardening prowess—I adore gardens. But considering that I live in a condominium high in the sky, I have no choice but to mollify myself with a fantasy version, one that blooms with my favorite plants and flowers. Without a doubt, a bevy of gardenia bushes holds pride of place in my fictitious garden because, to me, the plant’s creamy-white blooms and intoxicating aroma are the sweet and sultry essence of summertime in the South. And because there can never be too much fragrance in my garden, I chose to enhance its perfumed bliss by planting climbing tendrils of confederate jasmine, whose delicate scent and appearance belie a sturdy nature, not unlike the archetypal Southern belle. What’s a Southern garden without a magnolia tree or two to stand watch, gracing us with their majestic height and glossy-green foliage? Situated close to my imaginary magnolia trees is a phalanx of hydrangeas that helps to buttress my garden. They might be ubiquitous, but summer just wouldn’t be summer without the showy arrival of hydrangeas’ moptop blooms, punctuating a garden’s greenness with bursts of blue, pink and white. Springtime in my garden is heralded by the cheerful yellow blooms of forsythia and jonquils, joined in colorful chorus by azalea bushes rife with sprightly pink blossoms. Come winter, though, the mood is more peaceful, with berrystudded holly bushes and flowering camellias bedecked in Christmas shades of red and white adding notes of dignity and calm. And so then, my garden goes to sleep for a long winter’s nap until, once again, it emerges, renewed and rested at the arrival of spring. My garden may just be a figment of my imagination, but what a lovely one it has been to grow. 41

On March 27, 2017, nine of Atlanta’s most philanthropic women (and one male, also a consummate advocate) will be lauded for their charitable endeavors at the 10th annual luncheon and fashion show. Presented by Saks Fifth Avenue and the St. Regis to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the event allowed AH&L the opportunity to get to know these smart and stylish honorees.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? JL: I find inspiration all around—through travel, music, art and film.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? PT: Having given my two girls guidance and hopefully inspiration through the years, I now depend on them for the same advice and motivation.

Who are your personal style icons? JL: So many people inspire me. My mother has always been an inspiration, as well as my beautiful friends. I definitely look to style icons such as Ava Gardner and Diana Vreeland. I also admire Marion Cotillard and Diane Kruger; I think they are both extremely talented and have great personal style. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? JL: My parents have always been role models for me. I have also been really fortunate to have some amazing friends and mentors, who have always supported and encouraged me both personally and professionally. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? JL: I’m very inspired by the work of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) and the impact the organization makes on children’s lives. I’ve also always been passionate about the arts. In February I co-chaired the Atlanta Ballet’s Winter Ball, and as a past board member of the High Museum, I think they continue to bring incredible value to our city. Tell us about your family. JL: I’ve always been very close to my family, and I’ve been so blessed to have their love and support throughout my life. I also have an amazing husband who is always there for me every step of the way and has always encouraged my dreams.

WSS_section.indd 2

Who are your personal style icons? PT: Definitely Katharine Hepburn! She was fiercely independent and confident. Her style said everything about who she was. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? PT: I admired my grandmothers tremendously growing up. Through hard times and health issues, their uplifting spirit, perseverance and compassion has held firm in my memory and given me a path to follow in my life. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? PT: I started the Patricia Bowman Terwilliger Family Foundation, my family helped start The Link Counseling Center and I co-chaired the advisory board and the LifeGate Group at Peachtree Presbyterian. When my daughter’s son was diagnosed with epilepsy, I delved into finding a cure and better treatments, and the Epilepsy Research Foundation was formed. Our family has also been very involved in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, The Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, Boston Children’s Hospital, Sandy Springs Society, Holy Innocents’ school and Ministering to Ministers through the Samaritan Institute. Tell us about your family. PT: If you want to have a really good belly laugh, come visit my family. Humor is a way that we move through the tough times. We also care passionately about the world we live in and know how blessed we are. Giving back is a must for everyone in my family.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? SS: I look to nature for the perfect color combinations, which leads me to fashion designers that are influenced by nature. I enjoy following fashion designers that went into interior furnishings like Calvin Klein, Hermès, Fendi, Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani. They are creating a lifestyle.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? CIL: Nelson Mandela; I was born in South Africa and still have family there. My parents raised me to understand that Africa is not just about safaris and animals, but a place with vibrant culture and friendly people. Mandela believed that one day we would all see each other not by the color of our skin, but by our humanity. He and my parents taught me that you have to live with hope, forgiveness and perseverance.

Who are your personal style icons? SS: Not one person, but I do think traveling helped shape my style, as did being passionate about architecture and design. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? SS: My family—my parents taught me to give back and always do the right thing. I’m lucky I married into a family with the same priorities. I also had an interior design professor who influenced my design path. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? SS: I am on the board of directors of the High Museum of Art, serving as chair of the nominating committee and on the executive board. I have co-chaired the museum’s Wine Auction, Collectors Evening and its first fashion exhibit, Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion. I am also on the national advisory board and the Georgia Committee of the National Museum of Women in the Arts out of Washington, D.C., where I serve as program chair. I am involved with the Piedmont Park Conservancy, and I am currently working on The Temple’s 150-year anniversary celebration. Tell us about your family. SS: I have a fabulous husband, Paul, who supports me in all my passions. We have a 15-year-old son, Jason, and together we enjoy the outdoors, travel, hiking, skiing and clay target sports.

Who are your personal style icons? CIL: My mother is my style icon. She is elegant, timeless and kind. She wears what matches her style and works for her image. Her beauty radiates from within, and that is real style. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? CIL: My father, Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. My father taught me that life is not always fair, but you can make your own road. You must be able to look at yourself in the mirror every morning and be happy. My goal in life is to make this world a better place. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? CIL: I am the head of the Isdell Family Foundation. Our mission is to enhance the protection of the natural world. I serve on several boards: the Atlanta Botanical Garden, Captain Planet Foundation, Fernbank Museum of Natural History and Pace Academy. In 2014, my family and I launched the Isdell Center for Global Leadership at Pace Academy. Tell us about your family. CIL: My family unit is fundamentally important to me. My husband is my rock. He is always there for me through thick and thin, the good and bad. 3

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? KLB:: God and my family are my biggest inspiration and at the forefront of consideration in all I do. On my toughest days, I am reminded that while imperfect, I am loved, and for my children, I must be resilient.

Who are your personal style icons? VB: Lena Horne, who was a classic dresser, and my younger daughter who believes in “a pop of color.”

Who are your personal style icons? KLB: My mother, Sylvia Robinson. She has always reminded me to dress for my body. My late grandmother also had a tremendous influence on my style. She was an avid saver and smart shopper.

Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? VB: I turn to my grandmother, who taught me to sew. She believed that fabric and the quality of the inside of a garment were most important. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? VB: I’m the chair of the global Board of Visitors of SCAD, serve on the board of the Emory Global Health Institute and support Meals on Wheels, to name a few. Tell us about your family. VB: I’ve been married for 46 years to Franklin N. Biggins (a retired judge), and I have two wonderful daughters, Dawn and Kenzie. When you look back on your formative years, what was the first fashion trend that profoundly affected your personal style? VB: I lived in Indonesia while I was in the sixth and seventh grades, and it was there I learned to appreciate beautiful Batiks and silk. They were unique and one-of-a-kind.

Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? KLB: My dad taught me to never be afraid to ask for something. My grandmother reminded me that all things work for the good of those who love the Lord. My mother taught me to treat others the way I’d like to be treated. My grandfather taught me the value of hard work, kindness and generosity. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? KLB: Families First is dear to my heart because of the role it played in completing my family. I’ve served on the board for years. I am on the board of the Andrew & Walter Young YMCA and on the Atlanta Board of Service for Centers of Hope. Tell us about your family. KLB: My mother’s grandparents moved to Atlanta nearly 100 years ago. My father was a Grammy-nominated R&B singer and met my mother after performing at the Royal Peacock. My husband, Derek, is also from Atlanta. We met in law school and have been married for over 22 years.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? RM: When it comes to inspiration, my faith in God plays a major role. As a Christian, my inspiration comes from scriptures in the Bible. It is the guide to a successful or meaningful life, profession and so much more.

Where do you look, or to whom do you turn for inspiration, personally or professionally? JS: I always turn to my family and closest friends for personal inspiration. I don’t need to look very far. Our friends and family inspire me in every possible way–every day—to try to be as incredible as they are (I never make it).

Who are your personal style icons? RM: I really don’t have a particular style icon. Growing up in Africa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I was much closer to Europe, so I loved and admired European haute couture, such as Chanel, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent. I find it chic, classy, colorful and feminine. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? RM: My parents. They have taught me the importance of education, my faith in God and respect for all human beings. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? RM: I am passionate about the work of our family’s foundation, The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation. We have been involved with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for several years, providing and distributing toys for the sick children during the holidays. My family and I also volunteer for Hosea Feed the Hungry, and I am a supporter of Cure Childhood Cancer (I will be co-chairing a fundraising event with them this spring), and UNICEF, where I’ve served as an event co-chair. Tell us about your family. RM: I have been married to former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo for 21 years. We have three children: our daughter, Carrie, a sophomore at Georgetown, and our two sons, Jean-Jacques and Ryan.

WSS_section.indd 6

Who are your personal style icons? JS: George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Jimmy Fallon, Jamie Foxx, Todd Tautfest and Tom Ford Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? JS: As a fiduciary lawyer, Bob Edge (Alston & Bird law firm in Atlanta). As a wealth manager, there have been several outstanding people who have paved the way. In my personal life, my parents, my partner and a group of very close friends have carried the greatest influence. They make me a better person every day because I know them. Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about or inspired by, and what is your involvement with these charities? What other organizations are you involved with? JS: I am intensely connected to nonprofit work in Atlanta. It enriches my soul and gives me so much more in return than I am ever able to give to the organization. I am especially passionate about my work with Andee’s Army, the nsoro Foundation, Open Hand, the Agape Youth and Family Center, Meals on Wheels, the High Museum of Art and several more. Tell us about your family. JS: My partner is Dr. Bill Torres. We are very close to our families–especially my mother (the inimitable Marge Sawyer); my sisters and their husbands; and my nieces. We also have a core group of closest friends who are most definitely our family.

TUCKED AWAY IN A SECLUDED NEIGHBORHOOD that is home to several multiacre horse farms, Carole and Jim McWilliams’ 5-acre Sandy Springs property features an elegant stone-clad cottage, a bubbling creek that runs to the Chattahoochee River and a garden extraordinary enough to star on countless garden tours over the decades. For 10 years, Atlanta designer Jeff Jones has worked his magic on the McWilliamses’ interiors, while outside, an arcadian sanctuary has slowly taken shape. Since the McWilliamses moved in 24 years ago, Carole’s longtime collaborator and friend Tim Stoddard—a former Ryan Gainey protégé regarded by many as the South’s best-kept secret—has proved indispensable in the process. “He’s just amazing. I trust him totally,” says Carole, adding that, when she and her husband purchased it, the house had nothing but gravel road and forest surrounding it. It wasn’t

58

long before a bluestone walkway to the front door—and pea-gravel paths for meandering the grounds—made an appearance. Gardening classes soon followed, as did a pivotal acquaintance with rosarian Anna Davis, and before long Carole was a certified master gardener. She took her pastime seriously, even meeting Rosemary Verey during a tour in England. “It could be called an obsession; but Jim says it’s just a hobby if it doesn’t require a doctor,” Carole says with a laugh. Though not a gardener himself, her husband of 50 years loves to accompany her on travels across the country and abroad, where they pick up the many diverse birdhouses that have helped earn their garden certification as a wildlife habitat by the Audubon Society and the National Wildlife Federation.

Carole’s cedar shake-shingle potting shed is ideal for hands-on tasks. The McWilliamses’ greenhouse is encircled by yellow flag iris, frothy white viburnum and a stone-shrouded pond.

Container gardening is another passion for Carole, who makes frequent use of her greenhouse (which is peppered with succulents, agaves and other tropical plants) and her jaunty cedar-shake potting shed. To surround these structures, Stoddard established a sound hardscape with woodland arbors as punctuation points throughout the verdant acreage. Lake Rabun-based artisan Buz Stone handcrafted nearly all of these rustic components— including gates, rails and swings—from curvaceous locust wood. In concert with a white picket fence near the front door, they help accent an array of rhododendrons, native azaleas, hostas, camellias and sprouting spring bulbs. There are hydrangeas of every hue, plus boxwoods that start at the courtyard garden and continue along to the property’s pièce de résistance, an enchanting rose containment. It’s an overflowing haven for the garden’s approximately 120 total varieties, including a number of rare antique and remarkable heirloom roses you’ll be hardpressed to find anywhere else. “When the roses come out, I’ll order 7, 8, 9, 10 . . .” Carole admits. “I always find a place for them.” See Resources, Back of Book. 63

BEING PATIENT CAN YIELD GREAT RESULTS in the search for a home, but it’s not always easy, as interior designer John Banks can attest. “It was time to downsize from my large home,” says Banks, “and I was originally thinking I would move to a town house of some sort, but I couldn’t find anything to suit me even after months of looking.” The designer’s search ended when a house only two doors up from his current residence became available. Designed by noted residential architect Lewis Crook in 1951, the home was well built and cared for, but dated. Banks, a seasoned home flipper, was fairly confident it could be renovated to his liking, but he brought in architects Robert Norris and Rick Spitzmiller of Spitzmiller & Norris for confirmation. The house was purchased, and the talented trio got to work.

The neoclassical façade and interior detailing appealed greatly to Banks. “The original casework, plaster walls and marble floors were wonderful, so we didn’t change them,” says the designer, “but we added moldings and over-door pediments to rooms that were lacking those beautiful details.” “The sunroom needed to go with the feel of the original house,” says Norris, “so Greek Doric columns that mimic the façade were added, with large panes of glass between the new family room and the sunroom, making this room bright and airy in feeling. We also added the same Doric columns to the rear exterior.” Other parts of the home were reimagined for new use—the library was converted into a guest room, and the dining room into a casual family space. And then there’s the master bedroom. “It had no connection whatsoever to the beautiful rear garden, which seemed unfortunate,” says Spitzmiller. “By enlarging a curious, underutilized

with the style of the home, they are well edited and elegant, thanks to choice antiques and inherited pieces, some outfitted in new fabrics, from Banks’ former residence. He also layered in Oushak rugs, soft window treatments, floral patterns, and antique mirrors and light fixtures. It all suits the designer to a T. “This is my last house—no more flipping,” says Banks. “It has all the space I need, and I certainly didn’t have to move far.” See Resources, Back of Book.

HE OPENED HIS EPONYMOUS PRACTICE IN Atlanta 25 years ago, but in that short period of time, noted architect Keith Summerour has forever altered the residential landscape of Atlanta, as he both redefined the idea of “home” and responded to the power of the land. Here, we chat with the architect about his second book, Creating Home: Design for Living, which makes its debut this month.

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: YOU’RE KNOWN FOR YOUR ABILITY TO DRAW, WHICH IS SOMEWHAT OF A LOST ART IN TODAY’S DESIGN WORLD. HOW DOES DRAWING ALLOW YOU TO BE MORE SPONTANEOUS OR INNOVATIVE? KS: The biggest advantage of drawing is when you sit in front of your client, and they say they want a certain idea, I can draw it in front of them. And that is different than taking notes, going back to the office, working on the design on a computer, and e-mailing a couple days or weeks later. When you draw, there’s an instant communication and camaraderie between client and architect, a bond that means you’re on the same page with or in sync with the client for the rest of the project. That commitment—both creatively and financially—is paramount to the project. LET’S TALK ABOUT THE ROMAN ARCH, AN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT, WHICH FIGURES HEAVILY IN YOUR DESIGNS. KS: When I was studying abroad with the Auburn architecture department, I remember very clearly going to the Forum in Rome. Having grown up in Alabama, you become used to vernacular classicism—but it’s out of wood, and the thin materials of America. As you walk through this

mass of terra cotta, I was overwhelmed by the size, and also by what these arches were able to do; the honesty of it. It was not held together by nails, bolts, steel, wood. It was as if they had sculpted the earth in that way, and the natural laws of physics were holding it up. The inherent, ethereal aspect of that arch has always stuck with me. I think being inside an arch, and having that sense of security is not unlike early man looking out from his cave at the outside terrain, with a framed view of the landscape. There’s something indescribable about that. It touches the human soul in some way that makes the arch more than just a physical thing—more of a frame for how we live and where we live. WHAT’S NEXT ON YOUR HORIZON? KS: My focus and interest in the last couple years, and particularly in the future, will be more on public spaces; buildings that engage the public. Remote getaways, destinations, resorts—these represent a very good coming together of my interests as they relate back to the landscape and to nature, while also introducing people to our style of architecture in a way that affects more than a just few people each year. Right now, we’re working on a restaurant at the top of a mountain at Blackberry Farm, and we’re using an old fire tower for the central core of the building. The idea that hundreds, if not thousands, will come dine and experience this type of architecture, both rustic and refined, interests me greatly. I’m not giving up on home, but am taking my residential sensibilities—of quality, of space, of personal choice—and rolling that into a more public view.

Acclaimed Atlanta-based architect Keith Summerour, known for his ability to effortlessly blend style and function, highlights his mindful reinterpretation of classical style in his second book Creating Home: Design for Living (Rizzoli, $50), which hits shelves this month. The 240-page tome features 150 photographs by Andrew and Gemma Ingalls, which depict an inside look at Summerour’s diverse range of projects—and the thoughtful approach that inspired them. From a historic 1920s Atlanta residence to a rustic retreat at Blackberry Farm, each featured residence is a study in gracious style and the classically inspired architecture Summeour has fine-tuned through the years.

Westward, Whoa!

W

HILE EVERYONE IN THE SOUTH holds their collective breath hoping that another snowstorm like the March 1993 “Storm of the Century” doesn’t descend, Angelenos remain oblivious to the potential havoc that late-spring storms can wreak on meticulously planned gardens. The Southern spring explodes with dogwoods, magnolias, pear blossoms, rhododendrons and a plethora of flowers. Spring also ignites a full calendar of weddings, graduations and garden parties and a revolving door of design seminars focused on the rebirth of people, places and palettes. Radiant dresses float alongside an array of vivid sport coats mimicking nature’s color wheel as we convene over deviled eggs and mint juleps at steeplechases and The Derby. Twenty-two hundred miles away, Angelenos sport the requisite black and denim to usher in spring. I was blissfully unaware of the gloomy, aging colors of Los Angeles attire when I arrived at my first afternoon event in a lime-green shift dress with Jack Rogers sandals. Apparently, I was the 88

only one feeling celebratory in that June garden as a parade of cold-shoulder black tops over dark denim skinny jeans with black booties tramped past my sherbet-inspired attire. Unsalted almonds and raw crudités matched the lifeless garb. The crux of the matter is that there are no seasons in Los Angeles; therefore, there is no spring. There is no season of rebirth and rejuvenation after a winter of dormancy. There is no joy in the first blossom when something is always blooming in the perpetually 78-degree weather. Some confused people in LA consider a wool-blend cardigan a “coat” and enjoy wearing flip-flops to dinner in February. However, I terribly miss the seasons: I understand that the sweltering summer humidity is the reason Southern women have naturally beautiful skin. I love both the colors and the rustle of autumn leaves, and the holidays are merrier when bundled under heavy coats and gloves. And yes, I miss the exquisite drama that Mother Nature delivers every spring. When it comes to the seasons, and especially spring, I really miss home.

EDWIN FOTHERINGHAM

LETTER FROM

THE PRESIDENT AND

TOUR

OF KITCHENS CHAIR

Dear Friends and Patrons, Welcome to The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc.’s 20th Annual Tour of Kitchens! An Atlanta springtime tradition, the Tour of Kitchens has raised more than $1.9 million over the last two decades to advance our mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of our members, and improving our community. As we celebrate 20 memorable years of the Tour of Kitchens, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the generous support of guest kitchen designers, homeowners, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and Tour attendees. Throughout the years, the women of the Junior League of Atlanta (JLA) have strategically linked vision, social capital and trained action to address community challenges. This year, as we mark 100 years of service, the JLA is an organization of over 3,500 members serving more than 75,000 volunteer hours to support the same vital mission. The JLA believes that the collective power of diverse women, joined together to identify unmet needs and forge effective coalitions, can dramatically improve the lives of at-risk women and children in our community. Your support of the JLA’s Tour of Kitchens and associated Toast of the Tour event allows us to continue transformational change throughout the Atlanta area and carry our legacy of service into the next century. To launch the 20th Annual Tour of Kitchens, hundreds of guests attended Pour Before the Tour in November 2016. Finally, we invite you to attend the Tour of Kitchens on March 25 & 26, 2017. This two-day self-guided tour features the vision and artistry of 14 prominent kitchen designers, including culinary and event demonstrations from the city’s leading chefs and companies. For 20 years, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine and Brad Hanner have partnered with the JLA to make the Tour of Kitchens a success. We are grateful for their continued commitment to the JLA and look forward to celebrating this once in a lifetime event with you all. Your patronage of the Tour of Kitchens empowers our members to continue their “Legacy of Proven Leadershipâ€? into our next century of service. We look forward to seeing you on this year’s Tour! ARAYA HOUSE Eden Araya, of Araya House for plant design, began her botanical love affair in 2012 with Eden Easy Beds. Since then, Araya and former Eden Easy Beds partner, Yasir Woodard, have grown and installed countless edible and succulent gardens around the city of Atlanta. Since creating Araya House, Eden has devoted much of her time cultivating a new education on how people can regard plants in their living and work spaces. For Eden, it’s about creating a shift in thinking that goes beyond decor. Using Eden’s expertise via custom installations, workshops, and consultations, people are always matched with the perfect plant partner.

LENOX CUPCAKES Lenox Cupcakes was founded with a deep and abiding love for cupcakes. The company began its initial operations in 2008 from a home kitchen (on Lenox Road, hence the name) and shortly thereafter, a commercial kitchen. Since then, we have settled into our licensed bakery in Chamblee’s Antique Row. We are proud to have a loyal fan base, as well as corporate clients, including AT&T, Coca-Cola, CNN, Google, Microsoft, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Wells Fargo. Our gourmet cupcakes are EDNHG LQ VPDOO EDWFKHV XVLQJ WKH À QHVW LQJUHGLHQWV 9DOUKRQD FRFRD SRZGHU &DOOHEDXW FKRFRODWH SXUH 0DGDJDVFDU ERXUERQ vanilla, European sweet cream butter, and gourmet chocolate decorations. To ensure the freshest taste, our products are baked fresh daily, using locally sourced dairy and produce. Each item is lovingly handcrafted from scratch, using family recipes, and contains no preservatives or trans fats.

PRESERVING PLACE Preserving Place is a unique farm to store retail concept focusing on food preservation and preserving our Southern sense of place. Our state of the art commercial kitchen is used to make small batch, hand-made jams, pickles, and condiments, as well as a private culinary school, teaching students how to cook and put up their own food at home. In classes, students cook hands-on in an environment of personal attention from the instructor. Our versatile space is a great place for private events, particularly those involving cooking. We support other local and regional artisans by carrying their food or craft items in our store. Preserving Place aims to be Atlanta’s one-stop shop for all home food preservation supplies, such as the complete line of Ball Mason jars and products for hot-water bath and pressure canning; fermentation supplies, such as crocks, kraut mallets, and bowls for kraut-making; cheese-making supplies; and a curated selection of books with good advice on food preservation as well as Southern cookbooks.

THE KITCHEN

The original kitchen in this wonderful home was divided into two spaces with French doors RXW WR WKH GULYHZD\ WKDW EURNH XS WKH Ă RZ 7KH RULJLQDO FRRNLQJ DUHD GLG QRW DOORZ RXU FOLHQW to interact with his guests while preparing dinners. Home Forge redesigned the space to place a new island with cooking area facing the keeping room and the guests. We closed the French doors and removed a wing wall to unify and expand the kitchen space. Finally, we added a wet bar with lighted onyx backsplash. The result is a larger, useful kitchen space that brings our host and his guests closer together. The wet bar has a second dishwasher to handle a whole party of glasses. A bar overhang on the island brings guests into the action at the cooktop. The keeping room is now integrated with the kitchen for comfortable entertaining.

THE KITCHEN

The steel I-beams and exaggerated high ceilings were the pre-designed conditions that provided inspiration for this modern farmhouse kitchen design. The emphasis is on the materials themselves and how they connect together. There is careful consideration to door style and appliances, but the main focus in the kitchen is on color, textures, light, and how to best manipulate the overall human experience of the three dimensional space. Mission accomplished.

THE KITCHEN

These homeowners wanted a kitchen that was as modern and as interesting as their incredible art collection. Working with interior designer Kim Zimmerman, we came up with the idea to do an all-white kitchen with two islands, one of which was the customary prep island and the other an eating island raised to standard-counter height, both with white glass countertops. The prep island holds two dishwashers and the innovative SocialCorner sink. We reused their massive commercial range and installed a lacquer hood centered between marble slabs above. 7R WKH ULJKW RI WKH KRRG à RRU WR FHLOLQJ FDELQHWV KRXVH D EUHDNIDVW JDUDJH ZLWK UHIULJHUDWRU drawers below; on the left side, the same cabinetry provides storage for everyday dishes. A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM HONORARY CHAIR & CHIEF TASTER DICK DENNY

This’ll be our 25th year of having a great party and raising a lot of money for the High Museum of Art. Our friend Gina Christman has been with us from the start, with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles as a sponsor. There are a few others who’ve been with us from day one and a handful with perfect attendance. We’ll recognize them—and try hard not to leave anyone out—in our Auction catalog. We also have a Hall of Fame of 11 who have been special—founders, top bidders, top donors—and they’ll be given prominent display.

grown—from our first year of a Friday Fête and Saturday Vintners’ Reception and Live Auction to our current line-up of events. In 2017, on offer during Wine Auction week are a Ladies’ Luncheon, a Gents’ Lunch, Dine Around Dinners, a Trade Tasting, Winemaker Dinners, Tasting Seminars, a Vintners’ Golf Outing, and a Vintners’ Museum Tour. Our Friday Fête dinner features a renowned chef and dancing to an outstanding band with winemakers touring the tent showing off their latest release. For our grand finale, the Vintners’ Reception presents exceptional winemakers and leading Atlanta chefs followed by the country’s largest Wine Auction for the benefit of the arts. It’s been fun and rewarding, and we look forward to the next 25 years beginning the day after the Auction. Cheers, and thanks to everyone who’s been part of this wonderful labor of love, DICK DENNY Honorary Chair & Chief Taster

Kosta Browne has been an enthusiastic supporter of the auction for almost ten years, becoming the second highest contributor in our history. Many of you know Michael personally, from his many appearances at the auction, and on the occasion of their 20th Anniversary and our 25th, we are excited to honor Kosta Browne for their dedication to the auction. Kosta Browne began as a dream shared by Dan Kosta and Michael Browne. In the summer of 1997, while working at John Ash & Co. restaurant in Santa Rosa, California, Dan and Michael decided to venture into winemaking. They saved tip money and eventually had enough to buy a half ton of Pinot Noir, a used barrel and an old hand-crank stemmer-crusher, a purchase that marks the beginning of Kosta Browne. Since that vintage, they have nurtured relationships with the best growers and honed their winemaking skills, making sure to focus on the vision and values with which they began.

FRIDAY FÊTE Friday, March 24, 2017

This is truly living large. It all gets started in the tents at Turner Field with a Champagne BILLECART-SALMON reception including an exclusive Silent Auction (that people will talk about anyway).

Then it’s time to feast! A team of award-winning chefs will spend all day saucing, seasoning, mixing, mincing, spicing and dicing to prepare an amazing dinner for the assembled glitterati.

2017 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Renowned winemakers will be seated at every table, pouring their pride and joy. After the dessert course, don’t desert the party because a smokin’ band will start pumpin’ out tunes you can really move to until it’s time to shut it down and get ready for the next day’s main event.

CONTINUED Can’t join us? If you are not able to attend the auction but would like to bid on a few of our exciting lots, you can view the auction catalog online at: atlanta-wineauction.org. Download the pages, peruse the details, select your favorites and call or email us for details about bidding online or sending in a sealed bid. We are also able to arrange for telephone bidding during the Live Auction. Contact the Wine Auction office at carole.ashworth@high.org or 404-733-4543 for more information.

VINTNERS’ RECEPTION & LIVE AUCTION Saturday, March 25, 2017 Vintners’ Reception, 11:00 a.m. Live Auction, 1:00 p.m

The entire week has been leading up to this. In fact, the past 25 years have been leading up to this. This is THE BIG ONE!

It starts with more than 85 exceptional vintners filling your souvenir glass at the ultimate wine tasting—tables and tables of winemakers pouring samples of the best wines they make. Meanwhile, dozens of the best chefs and restaurants in Atlanta will keep your plate filled with an endless array of savory samples of their best foods. Seconds anyone? How ‘bout fifths?

Then at 1 p.m. sharp—the gavel drops on the silver anniversary year of a colossus of a celebration—the 25th Annual High Museum Wine Auction. Bigger and better lots than ever before—exciting and exotic trips, fabulous one-of-a-kind dining experiences and, of course, amazing and often unique wines, some in rare large format bottles. You’ll be able to bid on items you’ll never see anywhere else. There are so many awesome items, even the Silent Auction will have bidders screaming to the tent tops.

This is the best way we know to have a BIG impact on our community and have a tremendous week filled with fun, food, wine and art at the same time. Don’t miss this year’s Auction. It’s going to be huge!

Thanks to our Auctioneers: Michael Davis, Ben Ferdinand and Moriah Spicer of Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., Chicago and Ursula Hermacinski of Gavelgal LLC

HAPPENINGS AT THE HIGH MUSEUM

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

SECOND SUNDAYS

DANIEL ARSHAM: HOURGLASS On view through May 7, 2017

Hourglass comprises three related, site-specific installations, each infused with mythology and striking color. In one area, the artist has created a complete Japanese Zen garden with traditional pagoda, tatami mats and raked sand, all rendered in bright blue. Arsham transformed a second gallery space into a purple amethyst cavern composed of sports equipment. The final installation consists of a set of large hourglasses filled with crushed blue crystals and sculptural casts. The exhibition continues Arsham’s ongoing work in which he creates replicas of everyday objects in precious and semiprecious stones. The objects become fossils, remnants of our present seen through the eyes of a future researcher.

CROSS COUNTRY: THE POWER OF PLACE IN AMERICAN ART, 1915-1950 On view through May 21, 2017 This major exhibition brings together works by more than 80 artists who channeled the power of American places outside of city limits between 1915 and 1950. Featured artists including N. C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Jacob Lawrence, Grandma Moses, Hale Woodruff, Bill Traylor, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, and Peter Sekaer, among many others. Arranged geographically, Cross Country features more than 200 artworks, including more than 70 from the High’s permanent collection, which represent the true inclusivity of American art during this period of changing national identity.

Visit the High on the second Sunday of each month, when the Museum offers free admission for all visitors and special family-friendly programming from 1 to 4 p.m. Each month features a new theme. Coming up for April and May, activities will focus on the High’s amazing architecture and the art of storytelling, including the wonderful works of children’s book author and artist Ashley Bryan.

FRIDAY JAZZ Every third Friday, mark your calendar for live jazz in the High’s Atrium! Music, drinks, art—no matter the month, every Friday Jazz offers a great lineup. Performers scheduled this spring include trumpeter and vocalist Jason Collier.

FIRST FRIDAYS Thank goodness it’s Friday at the High Museum of Art! On the first Friday of every month, you can count on drop-in art making, live performances, and drinks from 6 to 9 p.m. Part art party, part happy hour—and did we mention it’s all free with Museum admission?
