out, lives large courtesy of happy hues, overscale prints and a rear courtyard that reads more like a resort, thanks to a mix of landscaping, hardscaping and sculpture. And, right along Peachtree Road, a veteran designer cultivates a refined retreat for a pair of collectors in which no corner or crevice goes unadorned—including an inviting and chic terrace that feels more like a sculpture garden. This month, we are also pleased to support two important annual traditions: the Junior League of Atlanta’s annual Tour of Kitchens, which takes place March 21-22 (page 33), and the High Museum of Art’s annual High Museum Wine Auction on March 21 (page 65). Making a positive impact on our community—through the arts, as with the High, or voluntarism through the Junior League—is a role we cherish, and we hope

CAPE COLLECTIVE Justin Van Breda chats about his recently launched chic—and charitable—furniture line collaboration Written by ZOË GOWEN with ten renown designers
ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: ARE THE TALES TRUE THAT THIS ENTIRE COLLECTION CAME TOGETHER IN SIX MONTHS?
Justin Van Breda: The ideas came to me simultaneously. I have known the Cape Town Society my entire life, and I wanted to create a furniture collection that gives back. The rattan and caned medium is so appealing, familiar and also sustainable. So it worked. AH&L: HOW DID YOU BALANCE HIGH DESIGN WITH LOCAL CRAFTS?
Van Breda: Most of the pieces are made entirely by hand and from start-to-finish by a single weaver. It was important to me that the collection tells a story, is of high quality and has a sense of humor. AH&L: RATTAN. TELL US, IS IT BETTER FOR THE PORCH OR WOULD YOU USE IT INDOORS?
clockwise ffrom top Justin Van Breda. Breda The Empire Mirror. Bow Chair. A weaver at work. Amanda Lindroth’s Plant Stand. Lauren Deloach’s De Table. Nina Campbell’s Cam Urn.
Van Breda: Of course, each of the pieces would sit well on a covered or enclosed porch, but we also designed some more formal pieces like the Justin Dining Table and the Lauren Deloach table that would mix well alongside antique pieces. And, there’s always the option to have pieces ordered that can be sealed with a yacht finish. AH&L: WE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE A PRESENCE HERE IN TOWN AND EVEN PULLED IN LOCAL DESIGNER LAUREN DELOACH. WHY ATLANTA?
Van Breda: Atlantans love their homes, classic design and craftmanship, but they also like to have fun. When I met my Atlantabased business partner, Matthew Welden, his wife would not hear a minute longer of me staying in a hotel—that kind of welcome and hospitality matters to me. I met Lauren when she borrowed plates from me and it was love at first sight for both her and her work. Justin Van Breda, (770) 596-5728; justinvanbreda.com 12

MODERN APPLICATIONS The range of garden ornamentation is expansive; from simple planters and benches, to sculptures, to intricate follies, fountains and pagodas. Regardless of the size or formality of a piece, garden ornamentation enhances the natural landscape and provides both function and beauty.
TIPS FROM THE TRADE E D U C AT E D E Y E
NATURE’S
GLAMOUR
Garden ornaments combine with blossoms and greenery to create a multitude of environments that delight the senses and engage the eye
Landscape architect Jonathan Bussell reveals his insight. ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: WHAT ARE IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN ADDING ORNAMENTATION TO A GARDEN?
Jonathan Bussell: It’s important to consider the correct scale and appropriateness of any garden ornament. Proper placement is critical so that the ornamentation becomes the focal point, but restraint is key. AH&L: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT INCORPORATING WATER INTO A GARDEN, AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS?
ORIGINS

From ancient Rome, to formal French and English gardens, to Asian feng shui, to contemporary carpets of fescue surrounding infinity pools, people have had a love affair with garden ornamentation. Spanning continents and millennia, enhancing gardens with ornaments has proved to be one of the few decorative arts that has transcended time and place. For some, garden ornamentation is best when it is indigenous to the place. Japanese rock gardens originated in the 8th century, but little has changed in today’s Zen gardens in the use of sand, rocks and moss. Alternatively, both the ancient Romans and the 18th-century English showed enormous appreciation for the artistic endeavors of human hands. Water features were common in Roman gardens, while the architectural garden folly flourished across English estates.
Bussell: Both the sight and sound of water are refreshing. Visually, water enlivens a space with movement, but it can be equally tranquil and reflective. Also, the sound of water enhances any space. From water trickling over stones to the light spray of a fountain, the sound of water is soothing. AH&L: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE GARDEN ORNAMENTS?
Bussell: Decorative, but comfortable seating is a must. Whether chairs or benches, every garden needs a place to sit and enjoy the space, and the addition of a small drinks table creates an invitation. Olive jars, millstones and bronzes work well in most spaces because every garden needs a jewel. AH&L: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ANTIQUE OR VINTAGE GARDEN ORNAMENTS?
Bussell: Antique and vintage elements with beautiful patinas create the sense of age and establishment in newly created gardens. If these elements are family heirlooms with sentimental value, then that further enhances the garden with history.

TRADING UP A POST-RETIREMENT or downsize move used to mean shifting into a condo or even a retirement community, but Atlanta builders and architects are noticing an uptick in high-end custom, right-size infill homes in neighborhoods like Peachtree Park and Garden Hills. “We have been seeing a trend of elder baby boomers downsizing from large homes to smaller homes that better fit their empty-nester lifestyle,” explains builder Jon Berndsen of Berndsen Custom Homes. For instance, on a current project with architect Norman Askins, a young retiree in her early 50s is moving out of her luxe Buckhead condo and into a custom-built house on a lot in Garden Hills. “She 20
wanted a small, charming house,” Askins explains, adding that the project will have high-end features like an iron-canopied front entry, limestone trim and French doors throughout. “It’s nice when clients want something in the correct scale for the whole neighborhood. It’s a breath of fresh air,” he says. Similarly, Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes is working on a $1.85 million home on East Paces Ferry (pictured), sized just right for the lot and neighborhood; it’s peppered with rich architectural details and finishes. “For many of these baby boomers, they realize this is likely the last home they will build,” says Berndsen. “Their standards are high, and at this point in their lives, they deserve it.”

Naomi Von Habersham IT’S FUNNY HOW EVEN AMONG so-called design devotees, people can take such different approaches to decorating their homes’ outdoor spaces. On the one hand, there are those design-savvy homeowners who treat their patios and porches much as they do their homes’ interiors, with every possible amenity duplicated outdoors. In their well-appointed outdoor “rooms,” furniture is upholstered almost as elaborately as that which resides indoors. Cold beverages are never more than a step or two away thanks to the presence of outdoor refrigerators or wine coolers, presumably stocked with sparkling water and rosé. Also, you’ll likely never feel chilly in these überdecorated outdoor spaces, because almost every patio I see these days boasts a firepit or, even better, a fireplace. But warm temperatures don’t present a problem either, because these same spaces are often also outfitted with ceiling fans. And you can forget about being lured back inside by television, because today, the hottest thing seems to be the outdoor big-screen TV. I have to be honest. I just don’t understand the desire to watch television outside. Isn’t the whole point of spending time en plein air to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors? At quite the other end of the spectrum are those of us who, despite our interest in design, take a very minimalist, and some might even say primitive, view of outdoor decorating. Give us a comfortable weather-proof chair, a citronella candle and a few potted plants, and our outdoor spaces are complete. It’s not that we’re neglectful or cheap, but we simply choose to invest our decorating money indoors, where our fine fabrics and furniture are better protected. I have to admit, though, that after seeing last year’s designer showhouses, which boasted some amazing outdoor living areas, I am starting to wonder if I should step up my game. I’m thinking of a chaise, better outdoor lighting and perhaps an antique garden sculpture or two, but a TV on my patio? Nope. I have to draw the line somewhere. 23

CAMELLIA BEANS AND CRYSTAL HOT SAUCE are telltale signs of cajun cuisine, and thanks to Chamblee’s newest resident, Lagarde American Eatery, you won’t have to travel far to get a taste. A partnership between co-owners Leonardo Moura and Jamie Adams (who also own Sandy Spring’s il Giallo Osteria & Bar), Lagarde’s New Orleans-inspired menu is an homage to Adams’ parents and the recipes he grew up on. “My mom was a great cook and my dad loved to eat. As the youngest of five, I ate well too,” says Adams. “I’ve wanted to open a restaurant like this for many years.” Ingredients like Leidenheimer bread and freshly shucked oysters shine on a menu that a native New Orleanian would enjoy. Indulge on pork belly with chow chow and a sunnyside up egg, or for a true classic, the Gumbo File with andouille and shrimp is not to be overlooked. “Mom made great gumbo, so that addition was a no-brainer,” Adams explains. Complementing the savory menu is the eclectic interior, which was designed by Vivien Leigh Interiors. Warm hues offer a clean backdrop for a wall-to-wall graffiti mural by Lotus Eaters Club—featuring caricatures of both Adams and Moura in a Louisiana landscape. When the weather allows, retractable glass walls open for a wave of fresh air while dining. A neighborhood gathering place, Lagarde not only captures the flavors of New Orleans, but also the essence of Adams’ upbringing: food tastes better when it’s created with passion and shared with loved ones. lagardeatl.com
Spring is on the horizon, and the Midtown counter-service breakfast joint MUCHACHO is already prepared. They may be known for their breakfast tacos, but you’ll also find plates filled with seasonal ingredients, like the lemon ricotta toast with house jam (shown above). For a refresher, sip on the orange and ginger tonic for a sweet start to any morning. muchachoatl.com
Putting a twist on the traditional pie, DONETTO took full advantage of in-season produce to create the Pera pizza. White wine poached pears and shaved Brussels sprouts are topped off with whipped ricotta for the perfect balance of savory and sweet. Looking to share plates? Try the New Bedford scallops with a fennel and orange salad or the smoked half chicken with fire-roasted cauliflower and lemon broth. Don’t forget to ask the chef to serve it family style. donettoatlanta.com
Popular fresh ingredients set the table at Jonathan Waxman’s BREZZA CUCINA. The Italian eatery introduced a new menu combining wintry favorites with hints of spring sprinkled in—such as gnocchi with broccoli pesto or short rib with braised cabbage and crispy Brussels sprouts. For a lighter bite, try the kale salad or grilled steak salad with arugula and sweet potatoes. brezzacucina.com

On a bright spring morning on the eve of 2019’s High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction, an intimate group of High Museum benefactors gathered for a celebratory Krug Champagne brunch

at the home of Atlanta philanthropist Susan Been, who worked with Atlanta designer—and longtime friend—Robert Brown to translate her penchant for fashion and eye-catching color palettes into the overall scheme of her Buckhead home. “My personal style is color,” Been says, who also worked with event consultant Barbara Roos and caterer Dennis Dean to execute the brunch festivities. “It really is a challenge for Bob [Brown] to reign me in, but he always balances my love of color with such sophistication.” The Champagne brunch—which was attended by guests including Patti Dickey, Jada Loveless, Millie Smith and Raj Patel—began with Krug Grande Cuvée (166 Edition), then moved to Krug Vintage Brut 2004 and ended with the remarkable and rich Krug Rosé 18 Edition magnum. “[Been] is a pro at hosting parties,” says Brown. “Presto, off she goes.” Brown has now designed 19 projects with Been, so working with her style has become something of a second nature. “On the first few projects we would meet and go through each room and pick fabrics and paint colors, and eventually we stopped doing that,” says Been. “Now I may tell him that I want a red living room or a vibrant blue powder room, but that is about it with my input. He just knows me so well that he just does his thing and I always love it.”

The morning’s passed hors d’oeuvres—provided by Dennis Dean Catering—included lobster empanadas, blini with caviar and crème fraîche, and baconwrapped dates. Guests enjoyed specialty Champagnes by Krug, including Krug Grande Cuvée (166 Edition), Krug Vintage Brut 2004 and Krug Rosé 18 Edition magnum. Blanquart and a guest enjoy Krug tastings.

In the living room, for instance, a red damask wallcovering by Thibaut was inspired by a red room that caught Been’s eye during a summer trip to London. “That would typically be a hard sell for us, but she loved it,” Brown says. “I think it’s stunning.” Indeed, for this particular project, maximalism is the name of the game, as evidenced by Brown’s skillful mix of color and pattern, a choice largely inspired by Been’s penchant for Gucci. “I like it when we are able to mismatch things to add interest,” says Brown. “The more pattern and color we add, the better I like it.” True to form, an animal-print carpet from Stark creates a statement in the study, where Brown lightened the color of the paneling to create a more feminine feel. In the dining room, a custom de Gournay wallcovering features scenes of England, Scotland and Ireland—along with personal touches, including “a couple of gentlemen wearing her family’s tartan kilts,” Brown says. “I want my guests to be wowed when they enter the dining area,” Been says. “My goal is always to create an elegant experience.” above In the dining room, a chandelier from Ainsworth-Noah makes a statement above a dining table from Parc Monceau. The chairs are from Parc Monceau and Hickory Chair. right A custom DeGournay wallcovering enlivens the space.

Letter From the President and Tour of Kitchens Chair Dear Friends and Patrons, Welcome! The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) is delighted to present the 23rd Annual Tour of Kitchens. Not only is this a showcase of some of the region’s most esteemed designers and beautiful homes, but it’s also an opportunity to highlight the JLA’s mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Over the past two decades, Tour of Kitchens has raised more than two million dollars that has helped grow our work in the Atlanta community! As we celebrate 23 memorable years of Tour of Kitchens, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the generous support of guest kitchen designers for sharing their talents, our homeowners for welcoming tour patrons, our invaluable partners and sponsors, dedicated donors, volunteers and attendees. We also extend a special thank you to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine and Brad Hanner, without whom this beloved springtime tradition would not be possible. To officially start the 2020 Tour of Kitchens season, hundreds of guests attended Pour Before the Tour on January 30, 2020. Thanks to the generosity of our host sponsor, Daltile, guests met designers and homeowners featured on the tour, and the event was a resounding success. Toast of the Tour, our annual cocktail celebration will be a festive culmination to a successful Tour of Kitchens on Friday, April 3, 2020. The event is sponsored and graciously hosted by Ciot. As you take the two-day, self-guided Tour of Kitchens on March 21 & 22, 2020 through 14 of our city’s most stunning homes, we encourage you to get inspiration and immerse yourself in the creativity and innovation of the Atlanta design community. Each home is a showcase of the best and most inventive designs in our city. During the weekend, don’t miss out on the special culinary and event demonstrations, tastings, and more at our homes. Please share your experiences during the weekend and follow along by using #JLATOK on social media. Throughout our 103 years of service, the JLA has harnessed the potential of Atlanta women to take the lead in an ever-evolving world and create a healthy community for children, women and families. JLA has served as the premier source for civic leadership training and development opportunities for women who want to bring about lasting and meaningful change in their community. Our diverse group of members are a relevant and modern movement of women who are at the forefront of tackling some of the toughest issues affecting women and children - issues surrounding commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking, early childhood education and generational poverty. Your patronage of Tour of Kitchens enables JLA members and our community partners to take the lead and deliver transformational community change. We look forward to seeing you during the Tour of Kitchens!! Warmly,

Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters Ren Doughty has been active in the specialty coffee world for 20 years. He’s the Outreach & Customer Support Coordinator for Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters and he can’t imagine working for anyone else. Batdorf & Bronson has been sourcing and roasting some of the world’s best specialty coffee right here in Atlanta for 25 years. Many of Atlanta’s favorite restaurants and cafes serve Batdorf. When he’s not hanging out with his wife Julia and their three children, you’ll find Ren leading tours of the Batdorf roastery, serving fresh coffee at art events around town, judging local latte art competitions, or riding his motorcycle to a good bookstore.
CalyRoad Creamery CalyRoad Creamery, one of Georgia’s first micro-creameries for artisan cheese, was established in May of 2009 by two sisters, Cathy and Robin, who quite simply, wanted to learn and experience something totally unique. Both women were at a turning point in their lives. Both had held successful careers, enjoyed wonderful marriages and raised children. Yet they both yearned to create something special. The idea for making cheese was sparked by a pet dairy goat and her two kids. The two women developed a passion for making cheese after visiting several cheese makers in the neighboring states of North Carolina and Alabama. Ultimately, they attended the Vermont Institute of Artisan Cheese and fell in love with that magic ingredient…MILK! Come visit CalyRoad Creamery and enter into the world of cheese making…. Once you learn about the magic of milk, you will never look at cheese the same way!

Donetto, Chef Matthew Ryder With more than a decade of experience in the restaurant industry, Matthew Ryder brings a zealous and diverse culinary background to West Midtown’s Donetto, where he serves as executive chef. Ryder began his career in the restaurant industry at just 14 years-old, washing dishes and learning to love the gratification behind delivering a fantastic meal. He experienced several facets of restaurant operation – including bussing, serving and cooking on the line – before attending Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C., where he obtained an associate degree in Culinary Applied Sciences. Following graduation, Ryder dove further into the kitchen as chef consultant, head chef and most recently, sous chef at the former Adalina in Atlanta. Ryder enjoys expressing his artistic and culinary passions through the modern Italian menu at Donetto, where he plans to make micro-seasonal changes throughout the year, while positively influencing the West Midtown community both in and out of the kitchen. When he’s not in the restaurant, Ryder can be found exploring his new hometown of Smyrna, Ga. with his fiancé, Caroline, and Goldendoodle, Harry.
Erica Lee, Executive Pastry Chef at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta’s new executive pastry chef, Erica Lee, has been inspired by the hospitality industry since she was a young girl in her native Korea. As executive pastry chef for such a prestigious and globally recognized hotel group, Lee brings her creative flair to the dessert menus in the restaurant and for the hotel’s private events and meetings. With her imagination always being exuded through her creations, what is Lee’s favorite dessert to both make and enjoy? Classic cheesecake with blueberry compote will always take the cake. Lee is married to her husband, Jacob. Together they are the parents to their son, Justin.
Golda Kombucha Started in Atlanta in 2013, Golda Kombucha is Georgia’s first and finest sparkling kombucha tea—a probiotic drink containing vitamins and live and active cultures to aid digestion, boost the immune system, and energize the body. All of Golda’s Kombucha flavors feature a fresh Southern-grown fruit and herb pairing, and are free from artificial flavors, coloring, and preservatives.

Tour of Kitchens Events Continued Happy Camper Katie Mitchell is the owner and head taste tester at Happy Camper, a local healthy foods company making it easier to eat healthy on the go. While working as a management consultant, Katie saw a need for cleaningredient foods that were quick and wholesome to fuel her hectic workdays when she couldn’t find time to make them herself. Happy Camper started as a way to fill a personal need and now serves all gluten-free, dairyfree and vegetarian convenience foods to Atlanta and beyond!
Heavenly Cakes Heavenly Cakes by Pharez is a manufacturer of gourmet gluten free baked goods that are so good, you won’t believe they are gluten free. Pharez Roberson the owner of Heavenly Cakes is a self taught Pastry Chef who is passionate about providing amazing products that you’ll crave no matter you dietary needs. In 2007, Pharez learned the stomach pain and discomfort he had suffered with since birth was the result of a gluten allergy. In transitioning to a gluten free diet, he was unhappy with the gluten free flours available as they altered the taste and texture of his products. As a result, Pharez developed Heavenly Cakes Gourmet gluten free flour which is used in all of Heavenly Cakes products. Today, Heavenly Cakes’s amazing gluten free products can be found in restaurants, hotels, coffee shops, stadiums, conference halls, and Whole Foods Market’s throughout the Atlanta area.

Boasting flavors like Chocolate Sea Salt, Raspberry Lime, Banana Puddin’, and Pineapple Habanero, our team of 100 or so passionate people is empowered and excited to thoughtfully do what it takes to make any experience special. We scour the South for sustainable fruits and sourceable farmers for our five locally focused kitchens. Inspired by two brothers who started with a single pushcart on a street corner in Atlanta, we chop, mash, freeze, and ship thousands of artisanal popsicles a day. Today we’re a lot bigger but not different. O-Ku, Chef Choum “Sleep” Loy Joining O-Ku Atlanta in 2019 as executive chef, Choum “Sleep” Loy brings more than 12 years of culinary experience to the Westside’s premier sushi staple. The industry veteran brings leadership, knowledge of the cuisine’s tradition and an invigorating energy to the Atlanta team. Born in Cambodia and raised in Philadelphia, Loy spent a majority of his childhood learning the industry and training under chefs, including his wife’s father, who inspired his passion and pursuit of a career in the culinary industry. Following his high school graduation, Loy eagerly picked up a range of culinary techniques, perfecting his knife skills and continually striving to deliver the perfect dish and experience to guests. Loy joined the Indigo Road Restaurant Group team four years ago and has worked up the ranks, where he perfects traditional sushi techniques and seamlessly integrates classic sushi with a fresh take. When Loy is not in the kitchen at O-Ku Atlanta, you can find him spending time with his wife in Marietta or enjoying music and movies.
Tiff’s Treats When Tiffany Taylor and Leon Chen were college sophomores at the University of Texas, she stood him up for a date and delivered hot-from-the-oven cookies to apologize. Leon convinced Tiff to turn her cookies into a business, and the first on-demand warm cookie delivery company was born. The company started as small as you can get, with the two of them taking orders on a cell phone and baking cookies in the oven at Leon’s apartment. Today, Tiff and Leon are married, and the dream of delivery warm cookies is still alive and well, with more and more new stores popping up around the US each year. A commitment to a simple menu of classic cookie flavors, baked-to-order, and top-notch service keeps the company focused and growing. As of 2020, they’re now shipping Take & Bake kits nationally! If you haven’t experienced the moment you receive a box of warm cookies from Tiff’s Treats, what are you waiting for? Visit cookiedelivery.com or download the Tiff’s Treats mobile app to treat yourself or someone else day or night.

About the Kitchen
Nestled behind Phipps Plaza in a picturesque enclave in Buckhead this year’s kitchen was part of a larger whole home remodel. The homeowners are empty nesters with a passion for art and collecting. The kitchen palette of chalk and soft black is accented by a dramatic concrete backsplash tile. Its unique 3D texture is the perfect backdrop. The design of the kitchen and adjoining living areas allow the homeowners to interact with friends and family while they are curled up on the couch by the fire or hanging out on one of the covered porches. The custom cabinets offer a tremendous amount of storage as well as a hidden prep area and coffee bar. The cabinets are accented by natural Britannium hardware and Bianco Trajane countertops. Our clients love to cook so naturally Thermador appliances were chosen for their versatility. Please come visit us. We look forward to seeing you.

About the Kitchen
This new home construction in Brookhaven was the vision of our clients moving to Atlanta for the first time. The husband and wife like to entertain friends and family, so the kitchen was an important feature for them. The focus of the design was to create a multifunctional kitchen that also appeals to the eye. The user should be comfortable preparing a meal for one in this space, as well as be adequate enough for a professional chef or catering team during a large gathering. Everything is within a few steps reach, so preparing a quick meal on a daily basis is very easy, but the large island overlooking the family room from the food prep area allows for multiple people to work and interact at the same time. The cabinets were custom fitted with lots of clever and practical storage solutions, while the 7 foot tall walnut and brass hood is an elegant focal point demanding attention. The walnut hutch/pantry/buffet was designed to be an elegant extension of the kitchen intended as a furniture piece that complements the hood and ties together the entire space.

About the Kitchen
Designed in collaboration with two Atlanta experts, architect Bill Baker and interior designer Liz Shults, our team set out to create a kitchen open to the house and where everyone could participate in meal preparation and socialization. The kitchen space in this home is surrounded by many additional rooms. It is always difficult to design a kitchen with so many doorways and windows, however the end result, a cohesive functional and timeless design, is nothing short of stunning. Two storage towers running all the way to the countertop bookend the range wall featuring a custom stainless and brass hood. In addition to windows on each side of the hood, we added a shiplapped skylight above an 11-foot island at the axis of the room to saturate the space with natural light. Anchored by the nostalgia of an antique distressed hutch hosting family heirlooms and a breakfast banquette reminiscent of the one we designed in their previous home, this kitchen brings family together for cooking, relaxing and entertaining.

About the Kitchen
This client was building a new home in an established neighborhood and wanted something that would be in keeping with the architecture of her home while incorporating her sense of style in both colors and textures. We used a combination of paints and stains in deep greys and pale naturals and transitional door styles to give the kitchen its own identity while maintaining a cohesive flow with the rest of the house. Focus was placed on storage and function in each area of the kitchen to incorporate everything they wanted into the large, open kitchen. With limited upper cabinet space, we wanted to keep the countertops clutter free yet have everything close at hand so we created specialized pull out solutions for trash, trays, knives, spices, pots, pans, dishes, small appliances and even a built-in TV. The final touches in the design are the hood and end caps on one island featuring architectural shapes with a second island featuring a waterfall countertop. The end result is nothing short of stunning!

About the Kitchen
A major renovation was needed to update this kitchen to create a gracious space for raising a young family and entertaining. Soffits were removed over the old brown cabinets to visually increase the volume. For better flow and entertaining ease, the wall between the kitchen and dining room was opened up. All of the old stained trim was removed and replaced with painted trim. Two new windows were installed to add light and provide space for the professional 48” range. Custom cabinets in white and gray create the elegant ambiance with sparkle from gold pendant fixtures and glossy backsplash tile. The range and custom hood centers the meal preparation area, while the refrigerator, microwave, speed oven, and warming drawer are efficiently close. Dual dishwashers in the large island were a must, and make clean-up easy after frequent entertaining. An inset walnut top over the seating area is the perfect spot for breakfast or homework, while the adjacent bar makes entertaining guests a pleasure.

About the Kitchen
When the homeowners bought their home in 2012, they saw the potential. While the existing kitchen was adequate, it was not functional to their needs. They wanted to create a home with a warm, family atmosphere where the kitchen would be at the heart. They needed enough space to cook for their busy family of four as well as room to host and entertain out-of-town family and friends. They decided to redesign the entire space. Gone were the dated cabinets and Corian countertops. In came lovely raised panel doors in a painted warm grey tone as well as flat panel Rift & Quartered White Oak cabinets in a complimentary dark hue. The lines of the cabinetry and the hardware-mixed with modern touches in lighting and backsplash-create a welcoming transitional feel, perfect for the way they live. Form and function working together to create this warm and inviting family home.

About the Kitchen
This 1925 classic bungalow renovation emanated from a damaging water leak in the small and confined original kitchen. At the time, the homeowners were in the midst of planning a backyard renovation featuring a new pool. After months of planning the conclusion was to open the entire main level of the home to capitalize on the spectacular backyard focus. The new kitchen was relocated to the back of the house, formerly a bedroom and small bath. The original dining room, living room, and family room were all flip flopped and reconfigured to create a natural and open flow into the new kitchen and sitting room featuring a full Nano Wall system opening to the renovated back yard oasis.b Hosting an adjacent butler’s pantry, the kitchen functions as the perfect axis for both the home and the integrated back yard.

About the Kitchen
This kitchen was completed in the late summer of 2019. The homeowners are avid cooks and wanted an open and accessible layout with top of the line appliances, ample storage and a modern but warm feel. The ‘dirty kitchen’ stores countertop appliances, has an additional sink and dishwasher, and serves as a walk in pantry, all of which can be hidden when the pocket door is closed. The cabinets are painted Green Smoke by Farrow & Ball and the back splash is layered with gray crackle subway tile to give it a more traditional edge. The main attraction, the kitchen, is grand while also being understated. The neutral tones are muted but crisp with creamy floor to ceiling cabinets that hide two ovens, a fridge and a freezer. Opposite is a dish cabinet, which has beautiful black detailing inside. Oversized island with a waterfall edge serves as a grounding element and focal point for the room.

About the Kitchen
When approaching this kitchen, the homeowner who is enthusiastic about cooking, put forth the challenge to design a space that was both functional for the tasks at hand but also aesthetically pleasing. As great sight lines dominate this classic four-square house design, we aimed to transform the required asymmetrical function of the kitchen into one that felt very centered and balanced on the room. By blending stained cabinets centered on the main cooking area with painted cabinets flanking it, the eye “sees” balance. This wonderful kitchen, steps back to the days of fine craftsmanship, from its plastered walls and hood, to its minimal yet elegant cabinet design and understated beauty. Additionally, with the fine details of mortised olive hinges, unlacquered brass hardware, and solid white oak planked doors, it calls back to a time of a mastery between design and the artistry of woodworking. Through this amazing journey we were able to capture all the wants and needs from our client, providing them the perfect kitchen for their lifestyle.

About the Kitchen
The previous kitchen had low ceilings, very little natural light, and was disconnected from the other parts of the home. When the homeowners expressed interest in renovating to better accommodate entertaining their grown children’s families, architect Linda MacArthur came up with the idea to raise the ceiling and add a clerestory. This addition allowed the Studio Entourage team to fit the design within the existing footprint and create an elongated kitchen that is now bathed in natural light. The design team also worked with the homeowner to carefully connect the kitchen to the adjacent living spaces. With their love for cooking and entertaining, we also wanted to have an area outside of the main kitchen work zone for guests to gather and fix drinks. The separate beverage bar is the perfect addition across from the breakfast room that we created by enclosing a portion of the existing covered porch. The homeowners are also Francophiles who love braising dishes so having a gas La Cornue range was important and became a centerpiece for the kitchen.

About the Kitchen
Designed in partnership with acclaimed designer Steve McClure and German Kitchen Center, this modern, Buckhead condo exemplifies the glitz and glamour of in-town living. The homeowners graciously worked through the design and remodel process to create a space that functions as exquisitely as it appears. About the Kitchen
The homeowners of this lovely 1950s cottage determined it was time to update their kitchen. One of their main goals was to make it more functional for their day to day lives while maintaining the cozy warmth and charm typical of the home. Flush inset framed cabinetry was specified in finishes that flowed with adjacent rooms, along with bin pulls, marble countertops, and a hearth style cooking area which make this cottage kitchen feel as if it had always been there. Beautiful fabrics and cushions soften the space and pull it together while modern appliances and smart cabinet accessories make it current and functional. As the backdrop for family time, day to day meals, holidays, and entertaining, this cottage kitchen delivers a living space worthy of the well-appointed home it resides in.

About the Kitchen
Our clients started with a traditional kitchen which was separated from their living room by a wall. Further, their kitchen peninsula cabinets and countertop blocked the flow between their kitchen, breakfast room and a large screened porch. By removing the wall and redesigning the layout with a large island, the spaces were united into a wonderful entertainment area. With a new updated cooking range top and coffee station, they are ready to enjoy their personal space and entertain guests. Their new island allows for flow between the rooms and throughout the kitchen onto the screened porch.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS Open The Bottle, Start Something!

Aarati Alexander and Burch Hanson
AUCTION CO-CHAIRS Aarati Alexander Burch Hanson ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR Steven Hargrove MANAGER
When we first met to begin discussions about the theme for the 2020 Auction, we decided to focus our brainstorming on what it is that makes the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction so special. We discussed the amazing food, the incredible wines, and the magical combination of excitement and anticipation that occurs in the tents as paddles go up in support of such a great cause; however, we quickly agreed that the most special part of the Auction is the relationships! Over the years we’ve made so many great friends at the Auction—from fellow benefactors, to chefs, to volunteers, and especially the winemakers. We’ve loved hearing directly from these passionate artisans all about their process and philosophy when it comes to making wine. Coming together to celebrate their craft with these friends has led to countless great memories. During the time we’ve been involved with the Wine Auction, we’ve had so many incredible opportunities to open a bottle and start something amazing! So, we each put pen to paper to share with you one of our favorite memories from the Auction. We hope these personal stories will give you a sense of just how special this event is and why you do not want to miss your chance to join us March 18-21, 2020. We can’t wait to see you there! Cheers! Aarati Alexander & Burch Hanson

Aarati My husband, Peter, and I have spent the last three decades exploring our passion for wine. The deeper we’ve ventured into this world, the more we’ve found ourselves drawn to the craftsmen and women behind the wines we love. The High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction has been a gateway in helping us build deeper relationships with the winemakers we admire. For that reason, one of my favorite memories from past auctions was the moment we won our first auction lot: a private meal with some of our favorite vintners, Paula Kornell and the Ballentines of William Cole. Once the bidding commenced, it progressed rapidly towards our upper limit. I held my breath expectantly, raising my paddle one last time. The Auctioneer yelled, “going once, — going twice…sold!” Three months later we shared a long lunch with the Ballentines, discussing what it takes to make a great wine and the rewards and challenges for small producers in Napa today. I feel so lucky that in deepening our knowledge of wine, we are able to support the High Museum of Art, another one of our passions!

Burch Mark and I have been enthusiastic fans of the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction for nearly 15 years. The friendships developed with the winemakers and other long-time supporters of the Wine Auction, the visits made to so many wineries as a result, and the satisfaction of knowing that it all supports the great mission of the High Museum of Art have been fulfilling and meaningful. Every year we’ve attended has brought many wonderful memories and each one has captured my heart. One of my favorite memories of the Wine Auction was a Winemaker Dinner that we attended in 2011— hosted by Dina Woodruff with winemakers Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat, Julie Johnson of Tres Sabores, and Chef Carvel Grant Gould of Canoe. While the food and wines were of course spectacular, sitting around Dina’s fabulous dining table with people who have been instrumental in the history of the Wine Auction, sharing stories about the wines and about the evolution of the Auction, that special evening perfectly epitomizes the essence of the Wine Auction and our theme this year.

Open the Bottle, Start Something Memories are built around wine, food, friends, and family. Oftentimes, a good bottle is made better by the events that surround it—a romantic evening, a special celebration, or an unexpected surprise. Many people admit that they have a great bottle set aside, but that they don’t have a plan to uncork it. They are saving it for “someday.” The reasons of such phenomenon were different, but the result was the same—special bottles keep on becoming dusty. Why do we wait for that special day to celebrate with a cherished bottle of wine or champagne? It’s time to make sure those bottles of fine wine put away for a special occasion are used and enjoyed. The High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction is a time to reconnect with each other over a bottle (or two), create good memories with friends and family, and raise much needed funds to support our wonderful museum.
VIVIAN HOWARD AUTHOR, CHEF, RESTAURANT OWNER, STORYTELLER, HOST OF THE PBS SHOW “A CHEF’S LIFE”
Her New York Times bestseller, “Deep Run Roots: Stories & Recipes from My Corner of the South,” is a landmark work of American food writing, as much a storybook as it is a cookbook, imparting the true tale of Eastern North Carolina food. Vivian and her restaurants—Chef & the Farmer, Boiler Room Oyster Bar, and Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria—have racked up numerous accolades, including her selection as a five-time James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast. This year she launched her newest concept, Handy & Hot, an online limited-release bakeshop. “A Chef’s Life,” the five-season documentary television series celebrating Eastern North Carolina food traditions, has taken home a Daytime Emmy, Peabody Award, and James Beard Award for Outstanding Personality/Host. The series is segueing into a new series, “Somewhere South,” which will tell stories of the American South in the context of global food traditions.

Dr. Madaiah Revana’s compelling journey to become Vintner of the Revana Wine Portfolio is as unique and inspiring as his estates in Napa, Oregon, and Argentina. His journey began over 10,000 miles away in a rural farming village outside of Bangalore, India where his family’s farming heritage spans over four generations and his keen agricultural instinct originates. A passion for medicine led Dr. Revana to graduate first in his class from India’s top medical college, Mysore Medical College & Research Institute, in 1972. Driven by his quest for knowledge, he ventured to the United States in the summer of 1973 where he continued his medical education with an internship at Coney Island Hospital (NY), residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (PA), and finished with his fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center (TX) in 1978. Upon completion of his education, he began his own practice in Humble, Texas, where today he continues his devotion to cardiology and community.
Dr. Revana’s curious nature and exploring spirit eventually drew him back to his agricultural heritage. With the help of close friends introducing him to the First Growths of Bordeaux and the Grand Crus of Burgundy, he became fascinated with wine. His newfound appreciation of wine inspired him to travel the great vineyards of the world and he became committed to seeking out unique vineyard sites to produce exceptional wines that express a distinct personality true to the integrity of place. A lifelong pursuit of knowledge driven by curiosity and devotion to excellence, Dr. Revana’s accomplishments have been recognized with over 45 years in the field of medicine and nearly 20 years in his fields of grapes in Napa, Oregon and Argentina.

HIGH MUSEUM OF ART HIGHLIGHTS SPEECHLESS: DIFFERENT BY DESIGN April 25 – September 6, 2020
Organized by the High and the Dallas Museum of Art, this groundbreaking exhibition explores the vast spectrum of sensory experiences and new approaches to accessibility through immersive installations by six leading and emerging international designers and design teams—Ini Archibong, Matt Checkowski, Misha Kahn, Steven and William Ladd, Laurie Haycock Makela, and Yuri Suzuki. Their new commissions create participatory environments in which senses merge or are substituted for one another, such as rendering sound visible or language tactile. By harnessing the power and impact of design, “Speechless” offers unconventional multisensory experiences that foster understanding of the varied ways in which we experience the world.
OUR STRANGE NEW LAND: PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEX HARRIS Through May 3, 2020 The American South has become a nexus of film production in the United States. By 2016, more major features were being shot in Georgia than in California. Alex Harris (American, born 1949) began photographing this wave of filmmaking, focusing his attention on independent productions that were under way from Louisiana to Virginia. These stunning photographs are on view for the first time in this exhibition, the latest chapter in the High’s ongoing “Picturing the South” project, which asks noted photographers to create original bodies of work that offer new perspectives on the region’s social and geographical landscapes.
PAA JOE: GATES OF NO RETURN Through May 31, 2020
Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, this exhibition features a striking series of seven large-scale, painted wood sculptures by Ghanian artist Paa Joe that represent architectural models of Gold Coast castles and forts, which served as way stations for more than 6 million Africans sold into slavery between the 16th and 19th centuries. In addition to the sculptures, visitors can view archival documents and recordings, including photographs and short films, that explore Paa Joe’s poignant work.

“VIBRANT” IS A WORD interior designer Betty Burgess cites more than once when describing a charming cottage tucked away in Brookwood Hills. Step inside and it’s easy to be swept away by the home’s charming yet forward-thinking style—but that wasn’t always the case. Knowing their home had the potential to live and feel larger than its modest 1940s footprint, the homeowners initially reached out to architect (and neighbor) D. Stanley Dixon. He remedied the home’s choppy layout and minimal daylight with a few strategic strokes such as removing gratuitous walls and extending the kitchen. With a better sense of circulation in place, the home was primed for its new look. “From our very first meeting, the wife’s great energy and fun sense of humor really inspired me,” recalls Burgess. “I knew she was on board to push the design in a fresher, more lively direction. And it was clear to me that she definitely liked color.” 85

Fine Dining An artful Hélène Aumont table through R Hughes commands the dining room. Its striking lines are softened by a custom Bungalow Classic banquette and the homeowners’ own Regency-style chairs. The gallery wall features black-and-white photography by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Édouard Boubat.
Given the wife’s passion for art (she’s an active docent at the High Museum of Art), Burgess took cues from the couple’s personal collection to zero in on a palette of plum and lavender hues mixed with splashes of acid greens and yellows. “I photographed and printed every piece of art in their home, knowing I had to figure out how to create cohesion yet still let each one shine,” she says. To accent photography by renowned French artist Henri CartierBresson and a piece by Irish sculptor John Behan, Burgess selected an assortment of fabrics ranging from delicate florals to geometric patterns. For the furnishings, a mix of traditional and modern enhances the home’s eclectic sensibility. Family also dictated the home’s new design. With 12 grandchildren, plenty of space to spread out is undoubtedly crucial, a need that prompted Dixon to enclose the screened porch and transform it into a spacious family room. An arched iron window reaching 11 feet bathes the room in natural light, while cedar shingles on the once exterior walls remain as a nostalgic reminder of this home that’s been loved and evolved over time with its owners. 87

As renovations along the rear of the cottage developed, effectively changing the home’s relationship to the backyard, landscape architect John Howard was called upon to reconfigure the entire landscape. “To help the backyard feel much larger than it is, we created terraced levels for some visual depth,” explains Howard. The bottom paved terrace is now suited for lounging and dining, while the upper terrace acts as a lush backdrop boasting mature Cryptomeria trees alongside southern staples like endless summer hydrangeas and Becky daisies. Howard even transformed a neglected, out-ofsight area of the property into a charming sunken-in pea gravel space that he likens to a secret garden, a feature delightfully welcomed by the wife. “As a team, we really tapped into her energy and it inspired us to stretch our imaginations,” reflects Dixon. “That helped push the project along and in turn gave the cottage its own unique personality.” See Resources, Back of Book. 88

IF THE MARK OF GREAT DECORATING is that it can survive both the vagaries of time and a move between residences, consider Atlanta- and Naples, Florida-based designer Bill Murphy’s work for two longtime clients a resounding success. Referred to the couple years ago by none other than the late Atlanta design legend T. Gordon Little, Murphy, along with his late design partner, James Essary, decorated the couple’s previous home so adroitly that when the clients downsized to a Peachtree Road townhouse two years ago—and moved their home’s contents with them—the furnishings needed very little in the way of updating. “Decorating should be timeless. It’s not faddish,” notes Murphy, who keeps Essary’s spirit alive in both his work and his conversation. “It’s like buying investment clothing. Buy great pieces of upholstery that you’ll only need to re-cover occasionally.”

Patinaed Pieces above A Han dynasty pagoda tower stands sentry against the dining room wall. right Murphy clad the dining room walls with Cole & Son’s monochromatic Chippendale China wallpaper. The dining room chairs, purchased at Travis & Company, were also used in the clients’ previous home.
Tasked with giving the couple’s new residence “the look of a New York townhouse,” Murphy did so by choosing sophisticated, subtle paint colors in shades of greige, taupe and putty, which were used not only on walls but ceilings and trim work too. “When a room is all one color, it opens it up and makes it look larger” explains Murphy, who treated walls to a paint color’s full strength and ceiling and trim to half strength. Also in the spirit of Manhattan, baseboards were given coats of snappy black paint. Altogether, the colors offer the eyes a soothing journey from room to room, but they also play another important role: as a neutral backdrop to showcase the homeowners’ many collections, including antique dog paintings and, more notably, Asian antiquities, which populate most rooms in the home. 102

Blue-and-white porcelains from the early Ming to Yuan dynasties are congregated in the dining and breakfast rooms, while in the living room, centuries-old terracotta horses and earthenware fill the floor-to-ceiling shelves. And, even some of the home’s interior selections pay homage to the couple’s affection for the Chinese style, including a subtle chinoiserie-print wallpaper in the dining room and a pagoda-patterned upholstery and pillow fabric in the family room. It is Murphy’s expertise at channeling his clients’ diverse interests and possessions into a cohesive, attractive whole that keeps his clients coming back for more. “He knows what we like and has been able to pull the collections and furniture together into a unified piece,” says one of the homeowners, who adds that working with Murphy over the years “has been a pure pleasure.” For a designer, that just might be the highest compliment of all. “WHEN DON AND I BOUGHT THIS HOUSE, the backyard was basically a garage with a high roof,” explains Debbie Swann. “That was the ‘view’ from the windows. And the rest was very wooded and frankly a mess.” Undeterred, the Swanns set out to completely transform the half-acre space, tackling project after project until a truly inviting and tranquil garden came to life. First, the garage was removed and paths were created to give structure to the woodlands. “We started with a path on one side of the pool, and then three years later, we added an additional path and this continued until we had it completed. Not that you’re ever really finished with a garden,” notes Debbie. The paths point to unexpected treasures throughout the garden, such as a large

Fern Gully Debbie favors classical gardens with formality and structure, but there is still a sense of abandon at times in its more wooded sections. Garden statuary is a passion—sources include Architectural Accents and Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts—and in key spots they have adorned the garden with cherubs, an antique saddle stone (a mushroom-shaped stone used as a support piece in the past) and an orb of cement covered with moss. When choosing plants, especially those that thrive in the shade, the Swanns enlisted Daniel Cleveland of Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts. “He has been an enormous help. We’ve lost trees and had moles eat the roots of plants. We’ve had to rethink areas over time,” says Debbie. “A garden is never constant, it is always evolving and provides challenges at times, but I couldn’t imagine our home without one.” See Resources, Back of Book.
Debbie incorporates many ferns in the landscape especially in shady areas including tassel fern, eastern wood fern (also known as marginal shield fern) and holly fern. “We also use Southern shield which is particularly good for sunny spots,” says Cleveland. The faux-bois seating area close to the pool provides an ideal perch for morning coffee.

GLORIOUS GREEK ISLES
Escape to the Aegean Sea to soak up the sun and sea with breathtaking blue and white views Written by CAROLYN O’NEIL
EACH OF THE ISLANDS scattered across the Aegean Sea possess distinctly different personalities ranging from the beach party vibe on Mykonos to the classic serenity of Santorini. If you can’t decide between high energy and restful calm, then enjoy both by hopping between two of the most beautiful Greek Cyclades islands. Known for cliffside views, light sandy beaches, deep blue waters and traditional whitewashed buildings, Mykonos and Santorini beckon visitors to discover the wonders of ancient Greece while relaxing in luxury accommodations. And to help you experience all that both islands have to offer, the Katikies Resorts 120
& Club, who have more than 30 years of delighting guests under their belt, operates eight idyllic retreats with a dedication to chef-driven restaurants celebrating the cuisine of modern Greece.
SPIRITED MYKONOS With its iconic windmills dotting the hills above Mykonos Town, this island is known for its beach party atmosphere day and night with popular dance clubs that rock well past dawn. Adding to the chic seaside scene, the recently opened Katikies Mykonos hotel with sweeping panoramic vistas is nestled
high on a hillside overlooking the Aegean and sunny beaches below. This five-star boutique hotel is the first to offer 24-hour concierge service from anywhere on the island through hotel-provided mobile phones. Just give them a call if you need a ride after a day at the beach or late-night dancing in Mykonos Town. And if you need time to recuperate, there are private plunge pools on the verandas of the 35 rooms and suites, a holistic wellness spa and state-of-the-art gym. Three alfresco dining rooms, including the acclaimed Mikrasia restaurant, feature contemporary Greek cuisine created by

chefs who’ve trained in some of the world’s finest kitchens. Want to settle in for a longer stay on Mykonos? Also new to the island, the secluded Villa Katikies with kitchens and private pools is the perfect perch for families and small groups.
SERENE SANTORINI Depending on the season, you can travel to Santorini (officially known as Thira) from neighboring islands by ferry or via plane from Athens and other major airports. The geography of this crescent-shaped island is ruled by an underwater caldera, the crater of a volcano, which still warms part of the Aegean waters where swimmers go by boat to bathe in the natural hot springs. Whitewashed villages punctuated by cobalt blue roofs and bright pink flowers are the island’s most beautifully iconic sights. Buildings cling to cliffs with a myriad of steps and winding paths leading between them and down to the caldera below. Wine lovers can plan a visit to discover Santorini’s windswept volcanic soil vineyards, particularly known for producing the crisp white wines from the Assyrtiko grape. When you’re ready to relax, the Katikies Resorts & Club operates six luxury hotels on Santorini including the Katikies Santorini, Chromata, and Kirini as well as the Relais & Châteaux-managed Sun Rocks perched on the very edge of the steep caldera. Katikies Garden is the newest to the group. Located in charming Fira, the hotel is built within what was a historic monastery. Guests can experience a garden-totable dinner with expert wine pairings at De Paul restaurant in the hotel’s elegant open-air courtyard. A tour of the kitchen reveals the chef’s passion for grilling and smoking meats with one of Atlanta’s own Big Green Egg ceramic cookers. Not to be missed are Santorini’s spectacular sunsets. The light dancing off the water and bouncing across the hills fills the sky with the most glorious colors. Yet another reason to toast with one of the island’s lively Assyrtiko wines. katikies.com

GEORGIAN REFRESH
A renovation at North Georgia’s Château Élan Winery & Resort offers guests a refreshing taste of Europe Written by LAUREN IVERSON
NESTLED IN THE PICTURESQUE foothills of North Georgia just 40 minutes outside of Atlanta, Château Élan is a familiar getaway for wine lovers and relaxation seekers alike. You know it for its elegant architecture and acres of grapevines, or maybe you’re a frequent visitor of the spa. Whatever your preference, the beauty of the 16th-century-style French chateau and all that surrounds it is hard to forget. A sense of familiarity may beckon you inside (after all, it’s been around since the mid-1980s), but after a $25 million renovation completed in January 2020, its refreshed interiors are nearly unrecognizable. 122
Upon entering, the lengthy driveway— lined with perfectly manicured grass and greenery—welcomes guests, guiding them directly to the winery perched at the top of the hill. Stop inside the Tasting Room, where an array of tour and tasting experiences are sure to delight; and don’t miss the Château’s Italian-born executive winemaker and winery owner, Simone Bergese. With the introduction of native-to-Georgia Muscadine grapes (which thrive in hot climates and are one of nature’s best sources of antioxidants), Bergese has expanded the wine offerings to more than 20 styles. Ten bars and restaurants take guests on a worldly tour. Visit the light and bright Versailles in the Atrium, an internationally inspired American buffet, or Le Petit Café, which is the lobby’s new coffee shop and reminiscent of one you could find in Paris. For a nightcap, don’t forget to stop by Paddy’s—an Irish pub that’s complete with furniture and fixtures made in Ireland.

A FINE MEXICAN HIDEAWAY
Relax at Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve property in Cabo Written by BRIAN MCCALLEN
AUTHENTICITY. A sense of place. Cultural touchstones. These are the catchphrases of new resort developments throughout Latin America, especially in Los Cabos, Mexico’s trendiest destination. Combining luxury, heritage and simplicity under one roof? Easier said than done. But there is one Cabo newcomer that blends effortlessly into its desert-meets-sea setting and delivers Mexican warmth, charm and elegance. It starts with the huge iron “X” tilted on its side at the center of a porte cochere. Pirates ruled the tip of the Baja peninsula in the 16th century, preying on Spanish galleons. “X” marks the spot. Zadún, a RitzCarlton Reserve is the treasure. Tucked within Puerto Los Cabos, a 124
resort community on the outskirts of historic San Jose del Cabo, Zadún is the ne plus ultra of the region’s premiere hotels. Opened November 2019, Zadún (a mash-up of the English and Spanish pronunciations of ‘dunes’) is spaced along bluffs above a lovely beach on the Sea of Cortez. The property’s 115 low-slung rooms, suites and villas are terraced into a broad slope thick with desert vegetation. They almost disappear into the site’s rugged natural contours. Most are equipped with a plunge pool and terrace. Private attendants ensure that everything is comfortable. The guest rooms offer a modern expression of Mexican design. The decor is highlighted by handwoven textiles from Mexico’s culture-rich regions, such as Oaxaca. The color schemes are blue and pale brown—to signify where the sea meets the land. Zadún is not just another Ritz-Carlton; the Reserve category is the luxury brand’s top-tier product, and Zadún is just the fourth resort in its portfolio. The attention to detail is impressive and vibrant. If the typical Ritz-Carlton is a Cadillac, Zadún is a Rolls Royce.

The resort’s restaurants are splendid but not ritzy. In a colorful, open-air setting, El Barrio offers street fare, fine dining and a “Mexican Experience” breakfast that … well … must be experienced. HUMO, a rustic dinner-only restaurant, uses woodburning fires to turn out spice-infused, onlyhere cuisine. Specialty cocktails? Candil, an agave bar encased within a tall square metal edifice, offers a definitive collection of Mexican spirits. Spa Alkemia is more than a spa. It’s a 29,535-square-foot sanctuary of wellness. SPAIN’S GREEN COAST
Weave all throughout the country’s richest cultural and culinary region aboard a posh train Written by ANN N. YUNGMEYER
SINCE THE 9TH CENTURY, pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela (the tomb of St. James) have traversed the lush landscapes and seaside paths of Northern Spain’s Cantabrian coast—an area known as Green Spain. Trekking the ancient pilgrim routes is still wildly popular, but the area can also be discovered aboard the Transcantabrico luxury train, a “mobile hotel” that connects the regions of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Euskadi (Basque Country) by way of a scenic journey. 126
El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo offers seven-night trips between the elegant Basque city of San Sebastián and World Heritage town Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Its sister train, the new Costa Verde Express, will run five-night trips beginning May 2020. Both tours include excursions by luxury coach to quaint fishing villages, medieval towns and natural attractions. Itineraries highlight cultural heritage and architecture, from Paleolithic cave art and magnificent Romanesque cathedrals to
the modernist Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Nature’s art can be found in the rock formations of Cathedrals Beach and at idyllic Picos de Europa National Park. Dinner on the diner car showcases Green Spain’s diverse gastronomy, as do area restaurants including Bodega-style wine bars and Michelin-starred favorites. Fresh seafood features prominently and regional specialties abound, from the famous Cantabrian anchovies and whimsical

Called jewels of railway heritage, the narrow-gauge tourist trains feature refurbished salon cars that are original Pullmans from the 1920s. Sleeper cars have cozy double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and Gran Lujo’s luxury suites include a sitting area. Top-notch train stewards attend to passengers with white-glove service. Besides the train, Spain’s greenest expanse offers extraordinary travel experiences, from stunning design hotels to magical paradores that ooze history and character in converted monasteries, manors and castles. ingreenspain.es/en; renfe.com/trenesturisticos 127

LIFE
END NOTE
GR ATIFYING GARDENING IT’S NOT LOST ON ME that when I arrived in California, my house came with a gardener named Jesus. God does work in mysterious ways, but sometimes He can be very overt and let you know “I’ve got this—your garden and your relocation.” I absolutely love gardens, and I’m in awe of those who tend, nurture and cultivate such beauty. Most people think of Jared Paul as the captivating owner of Paul+ showroom; however, I think of him as “Southern gardener extraordinaire.” Jared toils happily every weekend, weeding and pruning and always rejoicing in the discovery of a rare plant that’s germinated in his carefully tended soil. I’m currently enrolled in his informal gardening education classes wherein he routinely posts his weekend discoveries and I learn that the weed I’d ripped out of my garden was actually a plant—such is the difference in our expertise. I’ve had all sorts of gardens: from huge rambling yards to container pots of herbs. I spent years nudging the landscape 132
of one home to appear as though it had been established for decades. Oak leaf hydrangeas, rhododendrons, azaleas, dogwoods and Japanese maples were planted beneath the surrounding River Oaks. By the time I sold the house, the landscape was rich with the fullness of Southern flora. I later drove by the house and was devastated to see that the Floridians who had purchased the home had ripped out every plant in favor of a Bermuda grass blanket that ran right up to the brick foundation of the house. Apparently, they needed Jesus the Gardener, but he was busy with me in California. I’m still not very adept at the intricacies of nurturing the abundant rose gardens that populate Southern California, but my overflowing rosemary can be smelled throughout the neighborhood. Regardless of whether my thumb is green or yellow, I’m going to get outside and get to work this spring. After all, Jesus still has a lot to teach me.
