WELCOME

FROM THE EDITOR

Escape! IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER than getting swept up in the moment? Whether it’s a belly laugh among friends, that additional round of drinks that may not be absolutely necessary but feels positively right, or even the glorious feeling of sand beneath your toes after a long winter, indulging in those intuitive, blithe emotions can feel downright liberating. Escape comes in many shapes and forms. As a child, I found my ticket to a change of scenery by putting my nose in book after book. These days, I’ve come to learn that travel and exploration, however brief, can prove rejuvenating and inspirational—if you do your best to smooth the edges along the way (thank you, Annie Selke, for that piece of advice!). For me, that often equates to sneaking in a museum visit or shopping trip in between meetings; circling a city block just to get a better feel for the neighborhood; or simply sitting down at a café with a cup of coffee or glass of wine and indulging in a screen-free read (or daydream). When kids are in tow, that might mean an impromptu game of old maid, hangman or tic-tac-toe and, very possibly, a race—which this out-of-shape mom inevitably loses. This month, we explore the idea of escape and the need to get away from it all, with four incredible second homes, each more like a sanctuary in the personal style of its owners (and their well-heeled decorators). Starthese last few weeks has certainly smoothed my rough edges, and I trust it will do the same for you. Elizabeth Ralls, Editor in Chief @elizabeth_ralls | twitter @eliz_ralls | instagram

Those looking to boost the botanical quotient of their interiors will be smitten with Fresh (Glitterati Incorporated, $50), floral designer Sybil Sylvester’s spring 2017 release. A showcase of her most stunning creations—many fashioned using blooms from her Alabama garden—the book is heaped with how-tos for even the most amateur arrangers. wildflowerdesigns.net

Style Underfoot Design visionaries Annie Selke and Bunny Williams’ freshest collection of indoor/outdoor rugs, BUNNY WILLIAMS FOR DASH & ALBERT, strikes a global note with patterns and weaves inspired by Williams’ extensive travels. A deftly designed combination of practical and pretty, the collection goes beyond stripes into punchy patterns like plaids, zigzags, grids and other eye-catching graphics, finished in some of our favorite palettes and hues (blue and white is always right!). We’re smitten with the Elizabeth navy rug (above), a vintage-inspired pattern made from 100% PET, a polyester fiber crafted from recycled plastic bottles. Available at Codarus,

JACQUELYNNE

LANHAM From elegant homes to celebrated clubhouses, Atlanta’s grand dame of decorating, the inimitable Jackye Lanham, has designed timeless interiors for discerning clients around the globe. WRITTEN BY Suzanna

Cullen Hamilton

Early Days

Jacquelynne P. Lanham Designs Inc.

top right Interior designer Jackye Lanham has put her signature stamp on interiors across the globe. above When renovating a 930s-era, Georgian-style home, Lanham painted the dining room ceiling blue and upholstered walls in a Jasper fabric.

18

Lanham formed her own firm in 1987 and bought the Buckhead office building where her firm still resides. From stately historic homes in Buckhead to sprawling, relaxed beach houses to prestigious private golf clubs, Lanham has always catered to a discreet clientele, whom appreciate her ability to create interiors that are both refined and comfortable. The River Course Club at the Kiawah Island Club, the Piedmont Driving Club, the Capital City Club, East Lake Golf Club and the Lodge at Doonbeg in Ireland (now Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg) are examples of Lanham’s extensive golf-related projects.

The Pinnacle

In recognition of her distinguished career, the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) presented Lanham with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work has advanced the tenets of classical architecture and timeless design, epitomizing the principles of Philip Trammell Shutze.

On the horizon

“Just because I won the Shutze Lifetime Achievement Award does not mean I’m retiring,” says Lanham. She’s currently working on projects on Kiawah Island, St. Kitt’s and Maui while also acting as the honorary chair for Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2017 Southeastern Designer Showhouse and Gardens, debuting this month in Buckhead. Additionally, Lanham is now on the board of directors for the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and aspires to continue decorative arts education.

PHOTOS BY EMILY FOLLOWILL AND ERICA GEORGE DINES. PORTRAIT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES

Lanham graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in interior design and immediately plunged into an international career with Hayes-Leger Associates. “I traveled alone to Europe, England and Asia to buy antiques, decorative arts and baskets to import back to America. It was quite an educational experience,” says Lanham.

The designer filled this cottage with heirloom furnishings and treasures. Soft colors and tailored touches create a calm and collected feel in this bedroom. The sofa is strategically positioned to take full advantage of this beachfront property’s breathtaking views.

“My style is ‘undecorated decorated’. I want rooms to feel comfortable, inviting and edited, but not cluttered.”

PON GRADUATING DESIGN SCHOOL, Vaughn Connerty honed her new skills working for one of the South’s foremost authorities in interior design, Phoebe Howard. During this time, Connerty wore several hats, working as project manager, designer and showroom manager at Howard’s multiple home-furnishings shops. After seven years under Howard’s mentorship and establishing an impressive design portfolio—from residences and vacation homes to hotels and country clubs—Connerty was ready to strike out on her own. With a distinguishable classic style that’s punctuated by modern sensibilities, her aesthetic has become a natural fit in many of Atlanta’s high-rise dwellings. “I enjoy the challenge of providing my 20

clients the comfort and softness of a home in these spaces that often have unusual layouts,” she explains. Connerty recently lent her skillful touch to a condominium at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Buckhead. Favoring a collaborative approach, she worked closely with her clients to create a home that is uniquely theirs. “I like to understand what my clients enjoy and how they like to live. It’s not just a process of choosing A or B but an exploration of what’s going to be best for them,” she says. So while the wife initially requested “new everything” in the condo, Connerty encouraged her to take another look through her old home. “As we sifted through the art and furnishings, she began sharing what certain pieces meant to her, and I knew immediately we shouldn’t part with them,” says Connerty. “While it’s certainly fun to start from scratch, beloved pieces bring character and a sense of belonging that can’t be replicated.” To complement both the older pieces and the newer selections, Connerty devised a modern palette of grays, blues and ivories and commissioned built-ins to mirror the clean, elegant lines of the unit’s architecture. The final result is a beautiful and bespoke home that is a reflection of its owners.

Soul of the South

Southern soul food and international cuisine collide at chef Deborah VanTrece’s TWISTED SOUL COOKHOUSE

& POURS, which reopened on Atlanta’s Westside at the end of 2016. VanTrece’s menu offers a range of creative dishes that pay homage to traditional Southern cookhouses—with a fresh twist (think oxtail with orange gremolata or pan-seared redfish with jambalaya grits and moonshine butter, pictured). twistedsoulcookhouseandpours.com

I’VE BEEN FEELING RATHER GLUM LATELY, as I’ve come to realize that I’m the only one of my friends and colleagues who doesn’t own a second home. I try to console myself by recalling that once I was the chatelaine of four homes: a sprawling apartment on New York’s Upper East Side, a gracious house here in Atlanta, an estancia in Argentina and the cutest ski chalet you ever saw in Gstaad. However, like my marriage with Mr. von Habersham, the houses went bye-bye, victims of an ironclad prenup. But that’s ancient history, and since my divorce, I’ve had a blithe existence, never worrying that my Atlanta apartment is my one and only domicile. That is, until I joined Instagram, where the daily barrage of photos showing people’s lakehouses, beachfront homes, New York pieds-à-terre and Paris apartments has turned me pea green with envy. To be honest, there were times when I felt that owning a second home was a hassle. Much like a primary residence, a second home isn’t immune to burst pipes, termites, roof leaks or packs of marauding dogs. (Just ask my former Argentinian house manager about that last one.) But to see these Instagram photos of everyone relaxing and whiling away the days at their getaway homes, mugging for the camera (always with a glass of rosé in hand or with manicured toes posed in front of a pool, lake or some other body of water) and declaring their lives picture-perfect, you could easily forget that secondary home ownership comes with occasional challenges. Burst pipes aside, though, owning a second home can be magical, especially if it’s located somewhere exotic. A London acquaintance of mine owns a getaway house in Marrakech, complete with full-time majordomo, gardener and cook. Call me jealous. And I’m equally envious of my neighbor, who retreats to her South Georgia plantation when the going gets tough. So yes, if I had my druthers, I would happily own a second home again. But next time around, I’m doing it solo, with no pesky husband to stand in my way. 29

We are thrilled that the event will again benefit Bert’s Big Adventure! Bert’s Big Adventure families from all past trips were invited in 2015 & 2016 to gather together for a spring Reunion Adventure at the the Atlanta Steeplechase. Nearly 300 Bert’s Big Adventure family members joined in on the fun, along with staff and volunteers. Guests enjoyed a full day of horse racing, Jack Russell terrier races, camel rides, face painting as well as seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

MEET OUR COVER ARTIST, GINGER LOWRY

“Not your ordinary equine art” is Ginger Lowry’s motto “Ozymandias” Horses are her primary subject matter, either racing or rodeo, using either pastels or oils. The oils are executed using only a palette knife, creating a loose, textured, impressionistic style, full of colour and energy. The pastels use intense color, but in a more reserved manner, showing more detail. “I am obsessed with color. I want to capture a split second of action, to emphasize the energy and movement of horses and riders. I want the viewer to feel the sweat and dust, as if they were there.” Her work has won numerous awards and is exhibited and collected all over the US and internationally, including Australia, UK, and Dubai. Some of the special projects she has worked on include The Iroquois Steeplechase, The Dubai World Cup, Trail of the Painted Ponies, and The Atlanta Steeplechase. She makes her home on Lookout Mountain in Cloudland, Georgia with her husband Tim, their Wyandotte chickens, and their beloved Mountain Cur, Miss Money Penny.

Established in 2002, Bert’s Big Adventure is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World® for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. To qualify for Bert’s Big Adventure, children must be between the ages of 5 and 12, live in “The Bert Show” radio listening area, prove financial need and have never been to Walt Disney World®. Following the annual trip, Bert’s Big Adventure provides year-round support through initiatives such as the Reunion Adventures, the Fairy Godparent volunteer program and additional charitable services. The trip and programs create a community of families that establish lasting friendships with others facing similar challenges. Bert’s Big Adventure will host its annual spring Reunion Adventure for the families on race day. The partnership with Bert’s Big Adventure is a wonderful opportunity for the Atlanta Steeplechase to give back to the community. Knowing that our organization can make a significant contribution in the lives of the children involved with Bert’s Big Adventure and offer them a day of happiness away from the stresses that no child should ever have to deal with is fantastic. bertsbigadventure.org

For the Las Catalinas, Costa Rica, vacation home of her Atlanta clients, interior designer BETH WEBB

fashioned a breezy, blue-and-white retreat that’s equal parts luscious and relaxed. The beach town, which is heavily influenced by dense New Urbanist architecture, focuses on integrating and preserving nature as well as maximizing views, evident from this serene lap pool located on the home’s rooftop terrace. WHEN A PAIR OF SEASONED CLIENTS called upon Carole Weaks to design their second home, they knew they’d be in good hands. After all, Weaks had designed their urbane Atlanta penthouse close to a decade before, and this new home would be just as important, cultivated and—considering all the time they’d had to contemplate it—perhaps even more to their taste. Situated in picturesque John’s Island, Florida, the condominium is nestled on the beachfront in a high-end community along the peninsula’s east coast. “The view they have both morning and night is just breathtaking, and I don’t use that term loosely,” says Weaks. “It is probably the most glorious sunset I’ve ever seen, and the color of the ocean in the morning is something I cannot even describe.” Since the couple would ultimately spend six months of the year here, the house needed to be set up like a full-time residence, which meant making the most of every square foot. From the outset, the designer felt strongly about gutting the existing unit; it was the only way to fully achieve the openness the owners were after. It took a leap of faith to knock down so many walls and expand so many doorways, but Weaks believes it made all the difference. Throughout the process, they gave her almost unlimited creative license, requesting only something fun and different from anything they had sprung for in the past. “They wanted this to truly feel like a beach home, rather than their previous house, which was full of antiques,” Weaks explains. “They wanted it to feel light and airy, with color and whimsy.” 45

The naturally stunning hues surrounding the home greatly informed its color palette, which includes complementary shades of melon red and crisp green. And thanks to tempering touches of black, from the living room to the kitchen to the guest bedroom, these shades appear sophisticated, not sweet. Meanwhile, the master is the very picture of serenity. “It’s right on the beach,” Weaks says. “You can see the ocean from here, and the whole palette is the same as the water outside.” So is the second sitting room, a neutral space featuring a fold-out sofa as an extra sleeping spot. “They’re so thrilled. They say that they just love the combination of color and calmness,” Weaks says. “They’ve got a little bit of both in a small area.” And if that isn’t interior design magic, well, Weaks has come pretty close. IT MAY COME AS A SURPRISE that Las Catalinas, an idyllic, walkable resort community located on Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Peninsula, maintains strong ties to Atlanta. This master-planned, New Urbanist enclave was actually the brainchild of MindSpring founder Charles Brewer, who, along with a handful of business partners, purchased the property in 2006 with visions of a dense, tight-knit neighborhood overlooking its picturesque mountainous locale. More than 10 years later, the eco-sensitive seaside community has blossomed into

54

its own, thanks to smart development that has not only preserved the natural terrain but also allowed its newest additions, such as a Beach Club, a mixed-use village and an adults-only hotel villa, to embrace its canopied surroundings. Because of Brewer—and the familyfriendly community he created, in which hospitality is not just top of mind but also a way of life—a handful of Atlantans have also designated Las Catalinas as their international getaway of choice (as have residents and visitors from across the world). Just a four-hour flight (and 40-minute drive, now on paved roads) away, the travel time is practically on par with a road trip to Sea Island, Georgia, or Rosemary Beach, Florida. Interior designer Beth Webb is one Atlantan who has known the property intimately since its inception, having designed several homes on-site (Charles and Ginny Brewer’s included). Most recently, Webb was enlisted by Atlanta couple Scott and Chris Polhemus (and their friends, David and Sue Watson and Chris and Sue Haaland) to create a breezy and bright retreat that would not only accommodate multiple families but also stand up to the wear and tear of beach life (and, eventually, the rental market). The catch? The owners were actually combining a pair of adjacent houses—one

by architect Michael G. Imber and the other by Neil E. Hoyt—doubling the capacity to seven bedrooms (with two master suites) and uniting them using a private plunge pool and covered cabana as a bridge. It was largely the designer’s experience working on-site with local craftsmen and Nicaraguan laborers—designing cabinetry, doors and windows from local woods and pouring concrete countertops and tiles, with a language barrier to boot—that proved invaluable to the Polhemuses, who wanted to move quickly to have the house ready for winter’s high season. The ability to design in such a turnkey fashion on an international level, however, did not come overnight, says Webb, who recalls arriving on the property during phase one, when Las Catalinas was still just “sand and the jungle.” Lessons picked up through the years, for instance, include finding workrooms in San José, Costa Rica’s capitol, to build and upholster furniture (and locating textile designers and artists for unique linens, art and accessories), all in the name of eliminating the need for expensive shipping containers and pesky customs limits. “We’ve cultivated our resources and workrooms to where we don’t have to do so much Stateside anymore,” Webb says. Ultimately, the homeowners’ design directive was to keep the palette clean, bright and breezy (and within the context of its tropical environs), which Webb accomplished with a refined blue-and-white palette, rounding it out with luscious texture 59

from woven chairs and rugs and striking handcrafted accessories. A designer known for her chic but streamlined approach, Webb says the ultimate challenge was creating seating arrangements suitable for gracious living in a home with such narrow spaces. Extending the main dining areas to both an outside terrace and the cabana in the pool deck was one way to maximize the property’s indoor-outdoor connection and take advantage of Costa Rica’s temperate climate. It also allowed her to make the formal living area feel larger than it is, thanks to doors that open to those

breeze-filled spaces on either side. “Any time we are designing for resort living, we are thinking about the ergonomics of space and storage, and how that room will work to be the most comfortable for the homeowners and their guests,” says Webb. In a house that accommodates as many as 18 but feels just as intimate and attractive for a party of two, this was no small feat. Equal parts engaging and fun, the residence is not unlike Brewer’s overarching vision for the community of Las Catalinas. See Resources, Back of Book. 63

W WHEN AN ATLANTA FAMILY had outgrown their simple North Georgia cottage and it was time for a teardown, they knew they still wanted the style of the new home to reflect its natural setting. “They wanted the house to look like it belonged, and they desired a rustic cabin attitude but with a sophisticated execution,” says architect Greg Busch. Influenced by the work of acclaimed English architect Edwin Lutyens, Busch used high-end, natural materials with an emphasis on craftsmanship. Embracing another Lutyens principle, the cedar-shake roof, cypress board-and-batten siding and stacked stones make the home look in harmony with the wooded landscape. Old-growth trees that had to be felled during the process were milled and worked

into the design, as were logs retrieved from the lake itself. “There’s no Sheetrock in the entire home,” says Busch. “It’s all varieties of wood, with plaster only in the master bedroom.” All that wood could read monotonous, but interior designer Meridy King, who collaborated with Busch from the start, added varying stains and washes to keep it dynamic. Even the kitchen backsplash is made of individual pieces of petrified wood, which, along with cabinet fronts in reclaimed oak, gives the space a layer of age and interest. Having designed the family’s Atlanta home, Meridy knew their lifestyle and needs. Accordingly, everything in the home speaks to the owners’ desire for “authenticity, comfort and durability, with 67

nothing too fussy or fragile,” she says. “They also wanted some color and nothing to do with the white trend. They have a very active, athletic family, so we kept that in mind with our design decisions.” In addition to sparks of color, varying textures flow throughout—for example, the powder room, joined with pretty terra-cotta tiles in green and off white for the floor. Capacious barstools, outdoor fabrics and put-yourfeet-up options speak to a relaxed lakeside atmosphere. Nothing about the interiors is predictable, due in part to the custom furniture by Brad King (no relation to Meridy). “There was a magnificent white oak tree that had to be removed, and I started to think about how I could bring this tree back to life,” explains Brad. The oak metamorphosed into structural beams, powder room walls and even the dining room table inlaid with a nautical star design in the center. “I liked the idea of a white oak compass to guide you back to the lake.” That is, of course, assuming you ever want to leave. See Resources, Back of Book.

YOU WON’T FIND SEASHELL decoupage lamps or tiki torches at this chic Florida retreat. Atlantan Mandy Mayers—who co-owns interior design firm and shop Interior Philosophy with Jessica Roan—equipped her family’s Alys Beach oasis, nestled along the coveted 30-A highway, with character-rich design details that both maintain the relaxed cadence found in Mediterranean abodes and push the envelope aesthetically. Unexpected structural details, executed by Alys Beach Town Architects Erik Vogt and Marieanne Khoury-Vogt, and a profusion of layered textures, materials and patterns infuse this Florida vacation home with laid-back sophistication. While the revered retreat, completed in 2014, is tucked right off the Gulf of Mexico, visitors will feel transported to an enthralling global locale upon stepping inside. “We fell in love with the location, as the property was on the Gulf Green,” says Mayers, who previously owned a home down the road in Watercolor and decorates for clients in the area along with business partner Roan. The lot’s previous owners had begun house plans for the property with Erik and 77

Marieanne that were beautiful but more contemporary than Mayers’ taste. The architects tweaked the layout to reflect Mayers’ softer vision, adding unexpected details to garner an approachable Moroccan aesthetic. The 3,400-square-foot home’s white stucco walls are evocative of those found along the Mediterranean—as well as the 30-A—coastline. White oak fills the four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath home in both the floors and the living room’s dramatic ceiling, where more than 1,000 oak pieces were sandblasted and assembled to create stunning square details. Remarkable design elements, in fact, abound, including the powder room sink: In lieu of a runof-the-mill bowl, Mayers and her team sketched a star design for a simple yet substantial addition. In one of the master bedrooms—all of the home’s four bedrooms were designed with adjoining bathrooms—the vaulted ceiling features rounded beams that were hand-chiseled to look distressed and not perfectly curved. Along with dreamy design details, Mayers and stylist Jill Sharp Weeks outfitted the abode with eclectic finds, such as woven baskets, nubby throws and patterned accessories sourced from Atlanta-based Interior Philosophy, for a Moroccan environment that feels playful yet refined. But what’s an enchanting beach house without a view? Throughout the process, Mayers made it a point to spotlight the Gulf Coast right out the door. From the placement of the pool on the roof to the height of the kitchen sink window (Mayers is 5-foot-3) to the positioning of other windows in spots with prime views—including the bathrooms—she gave the landscape outside as much attention as the interior finishes. “When we first sat down with Marieanne and Erik, we said that our first priority was to maximize the views,” says Mayers. “We definitely achieved that goal.” See Resources, Back of Book. 78

LIFE

S U Z A N N A H A M I LT O N

Westward, Whoa!

T

HE SECOND DOG, THE SECOND CHILD, the second home—it’s usually the “second” that brings both mayhem and amusement. The exuberance that accompanies the vacation home purchase typically includes visions of weekend respites, holidays and escape from the summer heat. But the minute concerns arise from storm damage, roof leaks, pesky pests and burst pipes, the realities of second-home ownership soon set in. Atlantans escape to the lakes and mountains only a few hours north of the city. Expansive mansions now front Lake Burton where modest fishing cabins once dotted the shores. If someone had told me years ago that Cashiers would host a decorators’ showhouse or that the Old Edwards Inn would boast a luxurious spa (and become a go-to wedding destination), I’d have said pigs could fly! As refined as lakeside and mountain living have become for many Atlantans, it’s simply the idea of escaping to a more peaceful way of life that’s most important. Once ensconced in front of the fire or perched on the deck, the stresses of city life melt faster than butter on a hot biscuit.

96

After selling my Highlands house when I moved to Los Angeles, I had a brief period of relief. I no longer fretted about possible snow damage or contemplated driveway gravel costs after spring rains. But I soon realized that I’m more “White Christmas” than “Mele Kalikimaka.” I love to rake autumn leaves as much as I like putting spring rhododendron blossoms in a vase, and I miss the affable nature of people when they’re at their most relaxed. Escaping LA for a weekend respite is a monumental feat. It takes as much time to fly to Atlanta as it does to drive to Santa Barbara on a Friday in LA traffic. As a result, many Angelenos escape to Vegas—a one-hour hop to a place more surreal than Sunset Boulevard at 3 a.m. Rather than taking in the trickling water of a lake or stream, Angelenos drown their worries in Vegas’ cacophony of piped music. The only hiking on the Strip is through its cavernous casinos, and a Vegas house party takes place in a poolside cabana, where there is nary a farm nearby to ensure fresh, local produce at the table. A pig just flew past my window—I think it’s high time to start second-home shopping in Highlands.

EDWIN FOTHERINGHAM

Our Atlantan turned Angeleno columnist waxes poetic on the beauty (and the beast) of owning vacation homes.

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE

The second annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, produced by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and benefiting the Atlanta History Center, is seen as one of the most influential and significant designer showhouses in the Southeast. This year will bring together designers from Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee, with Honorary Chair Jackye Lanham at the helm. A classic 1960s estate in Buckhead’s Kingswood neighborhood will be transformed into a livable treasure for the current homeowners. The recent renovation of the James Means–designed home, originally designed for Mr. and Mrs. Rawson Haverty, brings together architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates, builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes, landscape architect Richard Anderson and kitchen designer Matthew Quinn.

The new design will shuffle and expand current rooms, turning the former family room into a gallery and rear screened porch, converting the existing kitchen into a side entry and expanding the library. New construction adds a family room, a master wing (bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and two closets) and a porch wing with an infinity-edge pool, plus an upstairs laundry, three-car garage and basement with a wine cellar, a tasting room, an exercise room and a game room. We welcome you to tour this historic home and celebrate spring with us—and we hope you’ll find some inspiration and Southern hospitality to take home for yourself.

TEXT BY LORI JOHNSON

The 2-acre lot atop a hill overlooking recreational fields and a preserve inspired the new vision for the sevenbedroom home, which will double in size. While the original layout put the focus on the home’s front rooms, two new wings will form a U-shaped courtyard framing the backyard.

WELCOME! Is there anything prettier than Atlanta in full bloom? Each spring, we simply enjoy driving (or strolling) down West Paces Ferry, Buckhead’s tree-lined thoroughfare, and taking in the beauty of its verdant canopy—not to mention the happy, chirping sounds of spring. The 2017 SOUTHEASTERN DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS, coincidentally, is located right off of West Paces Ferry—at Paces Valley Road. Due to its hillside location, generous acreage and panoramic vista, it feels far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Designed by renowned classical architect James Means for Mr. and Mrs. Rawson Haverty in 1962, this jewel of a home is a part and parcel of Atlanta’s history, thanks to the use of reclaimed materials, such as brick on the front façade sourced from the Federal Reserve in downtown Atlanta, and columns on the rear porch rescued from another building downtown. Atlanta architect YONG PAK and builder MICHAEL LADISIC have been hired to bring this house firmly into the 21st century, and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is thrilled to be a part of this historic transformation. As you walk through the house, you’ll know when you’re in its historic core, but Pak and Ladisic have also created a seamless, U-shaped addition complete with a two-story family room; a master suite; and a three-story garage, apartment and man cave wing—all of which suit the wants and needs the homeowners’ contemporary lifestyle.

THE MAGAZINE Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

Finally, to bring this historic renovation full circle, we’ve partnered with the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER, one of our city’s most respected cultural institutions, which is also located off West Paces Ferry. We couldn’t be more thrilled to work hand-in-hand with an organization dedicated to preserving and fostering appreciation for (and understanding the context of) our multidimensional city. Welcome to the 2017 Southeastern Designer Showhouse!

We are also thrilled to have Atlanta’s most gracious decorating doyenne, JACKYE LANHAM, as our Honorary Chair. The entry foyer she has designed offers a warm welcome into this historic treasure—not to mention a fabulous first impression of this storied residence.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Atlanta History Center

Visit atlantahistorycenter.com for more information

Founded in 1926, the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER is a 91-year-old, not-for-profit institution that seeks to connect people, history and culture through a variety of experiences and resources. Located on 33 acres in the heart of Buckhead, the center features award-winning exhibitions; the Kenan Research Center; historic houses, including the Wood Family Cabin, Smith Family Farm and Swan House; and enchanting gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round adult and family programs. Over the past five years, the Atlanta History Center has been on an accelerated path to enhance the visitor experience in every way. A newly expanded atrium has transformed the West Paces Ferry entrance into a recognizable and inviting entrance and and encompasses a new museum shop and Souper Jenny Café . The warm space offers a twist on the traditional museum dining and shopping experience, fused with an independentbookstore atmosphere. And opening in fall 2018, the

new Atlanta Cyclorama experience in the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building will enhance the visitor experience, and make this a one-stop shop for history. Each year, the Atlanta History Center serves more than 50,000 schoolchildren through class field trips or classroom outreach by Atlanta History Center education staff. Visitors to the center get hands-on with history throughout the Atlanta History Museum, historic houses and 22 acres of Goizueta Gardens. And everyone has the opportunity to Meet the Past every Saturday and Sunday through a variety of museum theater performances in our new signature exhibition Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta. The Atlanta History Center’s approach to storytelling creates a special space for dialogue, discovery and meaning that gives rise to a multidimensional, shared understanding of our city.

inhnuyet Hardy graduated from UGA with a BA in finance and a minor in art. She was born in Vietnam, traveled extensively as an

Army brat and fell in love with design while traveling the globe. It is through those travels that she developed her signature style that can be described as a combination of simple, smart and edgy, with a dash of the unexpected. Minhnuyet Hardy Interiors LLC was established in 2012 with a focus on high-end modern and transitional residential projects and a niche market catered to masculine spaces and smart–home technology. Hardy’s work has

n Atlanta native, Lauren DeLoach embraces timeless Southern design with a fresh approach. Finding inspiration in architecture,

antiques, and art, DeLoach combines comfortable with classic to bring her updated traditional style to residences across the South. A sense of history in a home is a key element in her philosophy. DeLoach works with clients to blend family heirlooms with updated designs and fabrics to make each project truly one-of-a-kind. She began refining her design aesthetic while studying at the College of Charleston and later in art school
