The Italian Credenza in medium walnut.

Inherent Inheritability

From wooden beds wide enough for modern-day mattresses to occasional tables that are pretty but not too precious, BARBARA WESTBROOK’s thoughtfully tuned furniture line for HOLLAND MACRAE addresses the gaps she’s longed to fill in the marketplace Written by KATE ABNEY

A LONGTIME CLIENT OF TO-THE-TRADE SHOWROOM Holland MacRae, Atlanta designer Barbara Westbrook had her sourcing process down to a science. “I know which showrooms to visit for which pieces, and [owner] Mary Holland’s product has always been on that list,” the designer explains. “But I wanted the opportunity to buy more pieces [from her]. Sometimes you’ll find an antique breakfast table that is an inch too high or too low, or one you can’t fit your knees under because it has too large an apron, and you can really feel [the difference],” she says. “My thought was to make pieces that were inspired by antiques but scaled for modern use.” THE BARBARA WESTBROOK COLLECTION—which the designer spent two The Swedish Bed, available in King and Queen.

years conceptualizing, designing and producing—is, like each of Holland MacRae’s high-quality wares, handcrafted in England by a generational family of makers. Though not technically reproductions, the diverse 18-piece collection features elements (think artful ironwork and turned finials) of Westbrook’s most memorable finds for past projects, from a jaunty folding cart to a well-proportioned sofa console.

14

Stylistically, references range from American to English, Italian to Swedish (such as a sleigh-style bed with a storage drawer). Because sizable antique credenzas are virtually impossible to find in pairs, she created a version with angled sides perfect for bordering a foyer or flanking a large breakfast room. There’s also a leathertopped coffee table with an industrial edge—inspired by a vintage find Westbrook installed in a log cabin-inspired residence. Her Holland MacRae version is a tad larger, with a top that can stand up to both crayon-wielding kids and sweating cocktails. And since these pieces only look like antiques, “if they do get nicked up, it’s not the end of the world,” adds Westbrook, who notes that, like the whole of her interior design portfolio, none are instantly identifiable by her signature. “I think other designers will find these meet their needs just as well.” Available to the trade at

VERTICAL REALITY Whether he’s tempering the volume of a two-story room or creating visual focus in an intimately scaled space, designer RAY BOOTH of MCALPINE elevates draperies to the downright statuesque, as displayed in Evocative Interiors, his newly released book

IN HIS DEBUT MONOGRAPH, interior designer Ray Booth, a partner in the celebrated architecture and interiors firm, McAlpine, reveals his layered, energized approach to infusing today’s residences with both modern elegance and an inviting sense of place. Originally trained as an architect, the designer possesses an innate ability to define a space—whether it’s a soaring, open living room, or an intimately scaled study or bedroom—through captivating displays of furniture, draperies and art, and an intriguing mix of antiques and contemporary pieces. Yet, the key to this carefully considered, intuitive approach, Booth says in Ray Booth: Evocative Interiors (Rizzoli, $55), is the concept of flexibility. “Often the best-laid plans, most clearly real16

ized dreams, and most clever of schemes end for naught at the time of installation, when it becomes absolutely clear how the room will benefit by spinning all components around and repositioning them in places where they were not originally intended to be. The need to see critically and consider decisions from various different perspectives is intrinsic to the process of creativity,” the designer maintains. We’re particularly intrigued by the way Booth employs that creativity in the form of drapery as an architectural definition of a space. “We rarely use drapery at just a window, but instead use them to softly divide a space,” Booth says. “They can become a tool for flexibility, depending on a desired function, closing or opening a space.” rizzoliusa.com

Draperies are great components of scale for a room. They EMOTIONALLY address tall architectural spaces by echoing the height, but with a GENTLE EASE that is more malleable and manipulated in form. This helps RELAX the scale and posture of a hard architectural space.

Striking spaces blend a sense of place with contemporary touches in Ray Booth: Evocative Interiors (Rizzoli, $50). Featuring a foreword by Bobby McAlpine, the tome includes glimpses at Booth’s Nashville projects, as well as homes in Palm Beach, Texas and the Hamptons.

Use drapery as a LAYERING device. Sometimes beautiful objects need a little ‘back up,’ and drapery can become a COMPANION for accompanying a more precious and fine object to give them visual FOCUS in a larger context.

PAK

One of Atlanta’s most respected classical architects reinterprets tradition for the city’s most intriguing residences and raises the level of craftsmanship for custom homes

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Yong Pak was raised in Miami, Florida, and honed his passion for classical architecture through a sixmonth Italian exchange program as a student at the University of Florida. Pak admits he found Atlanta by accident on his way to New York City in the mid-80s; impressed by the neighborhoods, its people and their progressive attitudes, he ultimately relocated to join the firm of respected architect Norman Davenport Askins, a mentor who would later name him Vice President of the firm.

Developing Plans

After 10 years with Askins, Pak founded Yong Pak & Associates in 1997, began working with Atlanta greats such as interior designers Jackye Lanham and Nancy Braithwaite and made his way into the pages of shelter publications such as Southern Accents. In 2003, former Askins colleague Charles Heydt became a partner; the firm was renamed Pak Heydt & Associates. Even during an economic boom, the firm tackles less than 10 projects a year. “I have a

Studied Approach

Based 90% on word-of-mouth referrals, the firm’s signs are visible largely from the manicured lawns of prime Buckhead real estate (more than half of the firm’s work consists of faithful renovations to storied Atlanta properties) and his name is often dropped into realtor’s marketing materials, listed like an amenity. While Pak’s digital footprint remains limited to the firm’s website, he emphasizes that expertise is something that comes from time, patience, experience—even problemsolving: “I’ve learned a lot more from hardships than I ever have from anything good.” Atlanta, in turn, has learned a great deal about classical architecture thanks in no small part to his firm. “Our job is to create classical, lasting homes with exciting features that study the past and offer the best architecture in Atlanta, on par with a Shutze or Reid home,” Pak says. “What makes Atlanta wonderful is that because of those architects, a classic vocabulary exists, so there’s a European flavor and sense of place and connection to the land,” he says.

Naomi Von Habersham WHEN I WAS YOUNG, escapism came in the form of books and magazines, movies and television. Whether it was taking in the latest picture at the local theater (who knew that watching Auntie Mame would lead to my lifelong interest in interior design?) or being the only one in my small town to subscribe to Vogue (as I recall, Mona Bismarck and Babe Paley were my style idols at the time), I learned early on that a bigger world was out there waiting to be explored, a realization that led to what became my adult version of escape: international travel. Whether jetting to Japan in the 1960s or visiting India in the ’70s, I discovered a world that could be quite exotic and, more importantly, different than mine. Today, thanks to social media, our world seems a much smaller place, and it feels incredibly familiar too. Kids in Sydney, Australia, dress much like teens in Malibu, California, while a trendy home in Buenos Aires doesn’t look unlike another in Madrid. Although there remains uncharted territory in this world, I’m no longer so keen on voyages to far-flung places; I’ll leave that kind of complicated travel to the youngsters. But no matter my stage in life, I’m still always looking to escape from life’s occasional monotony, even if that means staying a little closer to home. This year, when I need a breather from the daily grind, I hope to venture up to The Greenbrier in West Virginia. Dorothy Draper’s exuberant decor never fails to transport one into the realm of design spectacle, while the resort’s Carleton Varney-designed casino will give me the opportunity to do something crazy: try my hand at Texas Hold’em. That’s kind of exotic, no? I’m even considering indulging in a travel-less form of escape: scenic wallpaper. Why not paper my bedroom walls in de Gournay’s “Early Views of India” or “English Landscape”? That way, I can get away, but from the comfort of my own bed. 25

Primary Embrace Slipcovered chairs add a sense of ease to the dining area of this Rosemary Beach abode, a collaboration between interior designer Melanie Turner, architect Lew Oliver and builder Stan Benecki for clients Renee and Russ Plumb. A dark custom dining table, a chandelier from Circa Lighting and a Todd Murphy painting, which Russ bought as a gift for Renee, are striking against the primarily white interiors. The chairs are LEE Industries, the lamps are from Circa Lighting and the console is through Lillian August.

RENEE AND RUSS PLUMB are no strangers to working with Melanie Turner; the interior designer has worked with the couple on a total of four projects, which include a family dwelling in East Cobb and an in-town condominium at the RitzCarlton Residences, Buckhead. With their two sons grown, the Plumbs decided it was time to trade in their suburban house for a beach retreat that could double as a seaside escape and primary residence. When Russ wanted to surprise his wife with a Rosemary Beach home that fit the bill, calling upon Turner—who has completed more than 15 projects in the area and is in the process of building a Rosemary Beach design studio and store—to bring his vision to life once again was a no-brainer. Along with architect Lew Oliver and builder Stan Benecki, Turner wasted no time in cultivating a relaxed yet sophisticated abode that had the ease of a beach house, as well as all the comforts of a full-time home. To achieve this balance, the designer kept the interiors light and airy, carefully layering touches that wouldn’t normally be included in a vacation home— high-quality artwork, an abundance of accessories, thoughtfully selected draperies and high-end furniture. “It’s traditional in that it lives like a primary residence instead of a secondary residence because it has more layers.” Turner says. “Rosemary has changed from being

Pretty with a Purpose In the main living room, a cypress coffered beam ceiling provides warmth and texture. Clever and Clean-lined To keep the kitchen open and fuss-free, Turner and builder Stan Benecki installed brass mesh doors to hide cabinet clutter while maintaining an airy feel. small little beach cottages to people now in their 50s wanting to be there full-time.” Though the home’s color palette is largely composed of calming neutrals, Turner also peppered pops of plum throughout, as a hint of color and a nod to her clients’ name. “It’s the common thread throughout,” Turner says. “Their last name is Plumb, and Renee looks great in it. It just made sense.” Casual linen fabrics, stripes and organic materials embrace the beachside setting, while clever solutions keep the home from feeling over-decorated. In the living room, for instance, Turner concealed the televisions behind a pair of landscape paintings by Nashville artist Charlotte Terrell. Similarly, brass mesh doors in the kitchen create a seamless effect while minimizing clutter. “It’s the key pieces that you put in a space,” says Turner. “The whole house is very light; you walk in and the nice thing about it is it’s not all in your face, but at the same time it’s really open.” To complement this openness, Turner paid close attention to scale, selectively incorporating larger furnishings to create balance and using dark hues to anchor rooms. In the dining area, which is open to the front door, Turner incorporated a large yet unadorned chandelier to fill space without appearing busy. A moody Todd Murphy painting creates contrast against light floors, fabrics and sideboard, while an antique cowhide rug adds a touch of texture. This careful balance allows the house to serve as a fully functioning home, where the Plumbs can enjoy their empty nester years. “Everybody’s lifestyles change; you go from small when you start out, to big when you have the kids, back down to small,” says Turner. “That’s the beauty of it, it’s wonderful to see the change.” See Resources, Back of Book. 35

Serious Style Turner transformed the room just off the entryway into a cozy study since the Plumbs plan to use the beach retreat as their primary residence. Washed oak paneling gives the room warmth, while a desk from Century Furniture provides the perfect place to catch up on emails.

“I DON’T WANT OUR HOME to look like every other house in Highlands,” was the only request of Carole Weaks’ client. That might be a tall order for some designers, but in Weaks’ capable hands, it came off without a hitch. “We had worked with Carole before, and we share the same vision. She knows what I like even though I am particular,” says the homeowner. “This was one of those wonderful working relationships where two heads are better than one,” says Weaks. “My client’s sharp attention to detail made sure we didn’t miss a thing.” 43

Mountain Majesty Built by David Bock, the home nestles right into the landscape with its stacked-stone and cedarshake facade.

The couple traded in their Highlands condo to build a new home beautifully sited in the Old Edwards Club, where they love the golf course and social community. The outside is in keeping with a mountain home, showcasing stacked stone and a naturefriendly color palette, but this look evaporates as soon as you open the front door. There’s not a whiff of rustic inside; instead, prettiness and sophistication prevail with happy colors, such as persim-

mon and chartreuse, as well as tailored touches in the form of leopard print fabric, lively wallpapers and Oushak rugs. Weaks’ signature deft mixing of antiques and newer pieces— without sacrificing comfort—is evident throughout. “My client had several antiques that we included in the home when they worked, and we updated as needed with new fabrics,” says the designer. “We did bring in new upholstery from Edward Ferrell for the living 45

Completing Weaks’ practical-meets-pretty scheme are one-of-a-kind pieces for layered appeal. The elegant window treatments in the living and dining spaces shimmer in a custom-colored treatment by TylerGraphic with Samuel & Sons trim. For the master bathroom, Weaks transformed antique French plaques that her client had purchased years ago into tall trumeau mirrors. “I also had a piece commissioned by the artist/craftsman Matt Tommey, who creates these woven pieces completely from natural materials. You can tuck in flowers, branches, and the like to give them a new look as desired.” And her client couldn’t be happier with the overall result. “Everyone who walks in says it’s the prettiest house on the mountain.” See Resources, Back of Book. 47

Deccorattin ng maven PHOEBE E HOWARD provvid des a sneeak peeek into o her new w book, Coasstal Blu ues Written by ELIZABETH RALLS

THE BLUES OF THE SEA and the sky have informed the worldview of Phoebe Howard since she was a child. “I spent most of my childhood playing on the beach— that was our playground,” says the interior design maven, shop owner and author of the newly released decorating tome, Coastal Blues (Abrams, $35). “It’s a color I never tire of and always feel inspired by. Particularly when I can pair it with ivory or sand colors that remind me of the shoreline.” Indeed, through Howard’s eye, casual elegance meets sophisticated ease, which is revealed through several sea-inspired residences in Coastal Blues. “Mrs. Howard,” as she is often referred to, divides the book into seven distinct color palettes, from Ocean Mist and Sea Glass (pale blue and brilliant blue schemes) to Indigo Bay and Trade Winds (true blue schemes). Each chapter concludes with paint-color suggestions, including hues similar to the projects featured, as well as suggested pairings— hues that will highlight, accent or contrast well with her nuanced tones, from ivories and beiges to peaches and sunny shades. 55

“Blue is one of the only colors that has so many different shades and nuances,” Howard says. “Blue and white is a color combination that never loses its appeal, and it remains fresh. You can pair indigo blue with khaki, turquoise with coral, royal blue with emerald green, or navy with red or bright yellow.” In her book, Howard—who, along with husband, James Michael Howard, also coowns the successful multicity furniture and accessories showrooms Mrs. Howard and Max & Company—goes beyond mastering the coastal blue palette, and delves into hardworking lifestyle advice, too, from setting the perfect waterfront table for entertaining, to the necessary components for creating a good old-fashioned game area in your home and the essentials for creating a restful (but still light-filled) bedroom. And which shade of blue, if you’re curious, does Howard naturally gravitate to? “A very pale blue, a color that has a little green and a little gray in it,” she admits. “I find this color happy and uplifting; peaceful and soothing.” But, in true Howard style, that penchant won’t keep her from taking bolder risks: “I would love to do a turquoise-andwhite tented room. I just need to find the right client!”

Coastal Blues: Mrs. Howard’s Guide to Decorating with the Colors of the Sea and Sky (Abrams, $35) hits bookstores this month. The lavishly illustrated tome is filled with neverbefore-published images that reflect the ease and casual elegance of shoreline living, as depicted through seven different sea- and sky-inspired color palettes, on 272 pages.

LIFE

END NOTE

Escaping Predictability

I

’VE BEEN CONSIDERING ESCAPING FOR SOME TIME. Escaping what, you ask? Prison? Monthly bills? Los Angeles? No. I want to escape predictability. All of us need stability, such as having a home and a paycheck and friends to rely on for chicken soup when we’re sick. What I want to escape is the predictability of design—the idea that every living room needs a sofa; that Oriental rugs are only for traditional rooms; that dining rooms are strictly for eating. (Actually, what I really want to escape is the HGTV notion that an entire house renovation and refurbishing can be had for $50K, but that’s another story.) So what I really want to escape to is inspiration. Eccentric people and the eclectic homes they create are enormously inspiring. Iris Apfel, founder of Old World Weavers, does not need to exercise, because the number of necklaces and bracelets she drapes on herself far outweigh anything she could lift at the gym. Iris’s house encapsulates more than half a century of her globetrotting life. No corner is vacant; no color is

64

omitted. From fashion to home furnishings, Iris’s life is a daily roulette wheel of creation. Another fabulous source of inspiration? Travel. Regardless of whether you contemplate the architectural feats of Rome or the dazzling monuments and museums of Paris, you’re immersed in examples of perfect scale, proportion, color and light. Standing in Times Square is the equivalent of visual binge eating and sensory overload; Broadway’s lights compete with the horns of taxis, while humans from every continent pass by in thunderous crowds. For less chaos, but no less drama, the great American west offers vistas that have inspired artists and authors for centuries. This year, I’ll be escaping both far and near. I’m thinking of hiking in the Canadian Rockies and paddleboarding in the Pacific, though first on my list is the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, where I’ll find creativity in every room. Isn’t living vicariously through talented people a delicious escape and magnificent inspiration?

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE

The third-annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, produced by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and benefiting the Atlanta History Center, celebrates the South’s genteel hospitality and flourishing design industry, as well as the beauty the region offers throughout the spring season. This year brings together 15 interior design firms from Atlanta, as well as Charlotte, North Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina, Montgomery, Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama and Jacksonville, Florida, and we are pleased to have Honorary Chair Beth Webb at the helm. A newly built residence designed by Harrison Design and built by Sheehan Built Homes, the 2018 showhouse measures nearly 9,804 square feet and is inspired by the English country homes of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens from the 1900s. The residence’s exterior features a brick-and-stone masonry with limestone, while its light-filled interiors showcase 11-foot ceilings; two master suites; two grand, matching stairwells and two laundry rooms. A full-daylight basement opens to a pool terrace and landscape. The 1.13-acre lot has been transformed by landscape architects Graham Pittman, Floralis Garden Design, Maxwell Gardens and Hamilton Land Services, and includes a front motor court, as well as a terraced lawn in the rear with a pool and surrounding lush gardens protected by a canopy of trees. We warmly welcome you to walk through the house and its grounds and soak up the lightness of spring—and we hope you’ll find some design inspiration and Southern geniality to take home for yourself.

WELCOME! As Honorary Showhouse Chair Beth Webb put it, “There is nothing quite like spring in the Southeast.” After all, what could be better than entertaining al fresco while enjoying the season’s blooms? At the 2018 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, designed by Harrison Design and built by Sheehan Built Homes, we’re celebrating spring. As you walk through the home, you’ll tour the work of 15 design firms from Atlanta and across the Southeast, including Alabama, Florida and the Carolinas. We are thrilled to have interior designer and author Beth Webb, who has designed the showhouse living room, serve as this year’s Honorary Showhouse Chair.

Nestled on the tree-lined streets of Buckhead’s Normandy Drive, the home’s grounds showcase the talents of not one but four landscape architects: Graham Pittman, Floralis Garden Design, Maxwell Gardens, and Hamilton Land Services. The deep 1.13-acre lot includes a front motor court, as well as a terraced back lawn with a pool and lush gardens.

A letter from

THE MAGAZINE Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

Measuring 9,804-square feet, the house itself is inspired by the English country homes of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. As you tour the home, you’ll see how Harrison and Sheehan have masterfully crafted an abode that feels seamless with the outdoors. In the light-filled interior, you’ll find 11-foot ceilings, two master suites, two grand, matching stairwells and two laundry rooms. Downstairs, a full-daylight basement opens onto a pool terrace and gardens, idyllic spaces for outdoor entertaining. Finally, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is honored to welcome back the Atlanta History Center, one of our city’s most respected cultural institutions, as this year’s beneficiary. We couldn’t be more thrilled to work hand-inhand with an organization dedicated to preserving and fostering appreciation for our multidimensional city. Welcome to the 2018 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens!

BETH WEBB Honorary Chair

It’s spring in the Southeast, and with spring comes the third annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens! I am thrilled to be this year’s Honorary Chair representing such a stellar group of designers from throughout the South, and I’m grateful to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for collecting such a talented group under one roof. Many thanks to Harrison Design and landscape architects Graham Pittman, Floralis Garden Design, Maxwell Gardens and Hamilton Land Services for designing this glorious home built by Sheehan Built Homes. This year’s showhouse exemplifies the best of Southeastern design. And what better beneficiary than the Atlanta History Center? It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of the third year of what has become a new Southern tradition. Welcome!

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Atlanta History Center

Visit atlantahistorycenter.com for more information

Founded in 1926, the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER is a community focused, not-for-profit institution that seeks to connect people, history and culture through a variety of experiences and resources. Located on 33 acres in the heart of Buckhead, the History Center features hands-on history through award-winning exhibitions; the Kenan Research Center; historic houses, including the Wood Family Cabin, Smith Family Farm and Swan House; and enchanting gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round adult and family programs. Each year, the Atlanta History Center serves more than 50,000 schoolchildren through class field trips or classroom outreach by Atlanta History Center education staff. And everyone has the opportunity to Meet the Past every weekend through a variety of museum theater performances in our new signature exhibition, Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta. The History Center’s approach to storytelling creates a special space for

18

dialogue, discovery and meaning that gives rise to a multidimensional, shared understanding of our city. The Atlanta History Center has been on an accelerated path to enhance the visitor experience in every way. A newly expanded atrium has transformed the West Paces Ferry entrance into a recognizable and inviting entrance. Inside, guests enjoy the local flavor of Souper Jenny Café, as well as Atlanta-owned BRASH coffee. Atlanta History Center’s new Museum Shop and Bookstore is a warm and eclectic space offering a unique twist on the traditional museum shopping experience, and features a wide selection of books, local artist items, and witty Atlanta History Center branded merchandise. And opening in fall 2018, the new Atlanta Cyclorama experience in the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama Building will bring history full circle, and make Atlanta’s History Center a one-stop shop for history.
