always taken that home-as-refuge mindset to heart. In our April issue, we explore three elegant, restful and relaxing retreats, from Lake Rabun and the Golden Isles to Alys Beach. In each of these projects, creating a sense of order and ease was the ultimate design dictum, from building decisions (like longer overhangs to protect from the afternoon sun in a Tim Adams-designed

retreat on page 54) to kitchen-design options, like employing openshelving so that there is never a question as to where to find the cups and plates, in a Melanie Turner-designed project on page 72. The most compelling aspect of each of these residences, however, remains the fact that they are ultimately designed to be memorymaking spaces that will be shared with family and friends for years to come. How can you design your home to reflect what makes you content, and your time there each day well-spent? We’re confident that turning the pages of this magazine is a good place to start.

Ryan Hughes’ airy, curated ADAC showroom, R Hughes, has become known for its exclusive collections and edited inventory of classic-meets-edgy pieces. Now among the 9,000-square-foot showroom’s stylish product is a show-stopping installation of pieces from Parisian design house Liaigre. It’s a collaboration that couldn’t have been more natural, says Hughes. “The addition of Liaigre to the showroom elevates our brand offerings and stays true to our commitment of showcasing impactful, artisan-quality pieces that stand the test of time,” he says. Indeed, the installation process was a true partnership between the brand—known for its modern Parisian style—and the R Hughes team. “The Liaigre design team took into account the pieces we thought would be a good fit for the Atlanta market, while we took their lead on the color story, scale and selection of materials,” Hughes says. Think glossy finishes, rich materials and bold lines. Also included in the installation is a curated selection of artwork from Liaigre’s exclusive art and accessories program, which includes works such as photographer Massimo Listri’s Uffizi, Sala Delle Niobe, pictured, which sets a bold tone thanks to its dramatic scale. LET IT SHINE Amy Morris’ debut lighting collection for Avrett strengthens the designer’s show-stopping sensibilities

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES:

Amy Morris reveals her Facet Collection for Avrett this month. A collaboration on an oversize fixture for a fashion boutique, above, spurred the partnership. Jewellike sconces, such as the Echo (in white and goldleaf) and Vogue (in aged brass and black shades) add presence; the Poise I chandelier is simply striking.

14

Congratulations on your debut collection! Avrett is a Charleston-based company that is known for handcrafting pieces that make bold statements. How long have you been sourcing Avrett for your projects, and when did your “aha!” moment strike? AMY MORRIS: I’ve been sourcing Avrett for my projects consistently for eight years— their lighting designs are distinctive and the outstanding craftsmanship makes them modern heirlooms. I also love their custom sizing capabilities. I don’t know if there was just one “aha!” moment–I’ve been collecting lighting concepts and inspiration for years! But I always found myself challenging Avrett to make really large pieces—like twice the size of what they had on-offer. And after working with them to design a custom fixture for a commercial project for a shop at Phipps Plaza, Peyton Avrett, the owner, approached me about collaborating on a collection. AH&L: The Amy Morris for Avrett Facet Collection is inspired by fashion and French modern antiques. Tell us which elements of your eight-piece collection—from wall sconces and chandeliers to lanterns and flush-mounts—make these individual pieces each so striking and distinctive? AM: I love the effortless, but chic style of

French interiors. I’ve also always loved fashion as a form of self-expression— particularly unique, statement accessories, like a great pair of earrings or classic pair of shoes. A few of my pieces in this collection, like the Echo sconce and the Vogue sconce, really reflect that sense of “jewelry” for the home. The facet is a recurring element and was inspired by the classic stud, a favorite embellishment that fashion designers have long embraced. It’s also a versatile and timeless detail. AH&L: You are known for creating sophisticated, fashion-forward interiors— which also happen to be quite comfortable (and comforting!). How is this collection an extension of your aesthetic? AM: My design intention is to create spaces that are sophisticated and stylish, but at the end of the day they have to be livable! This collection reflects that desire—the designs are approachable and practical with discerning details. The majority of the fixtures are simplistic designs with details that make a big statement. AH&L: Describe your Avrett collection in three adjectives. AM: Refined, glamorous, alluring. Avrett is available to the trade through R Hughes, ADAC, (404) 607-8877; avrett.com

an on-trend joie de vivre to the mix—more casual, modern and surprising. Interesting finishes as well, including a signature gesso and oft-imitated shagreens. AH&L: What can we expect to see in the Atlanta showroom, and how do you see these two brands appealing to and/or resonating with the modern consumer (or designer)? JC: Great question. It’s so important to note that the showroom experience is entirely crafted to resonate with designers. Our goal is twofold: to inspire and inform. First, the showroom is beautifully presented to inspire ideas and creativity. Shoppers can see, feel and touch the product, and have a sense of what it’s like living with Julian Chichester and Mr Brown. We have websites, of course, and our styles are often seen in magazines. Yet, there’s nothing quite like an in-person experience. Next, providing expert information is critical. Design is a business, after all. For example, nearly all our products can be customized. One can select off the peg, of course, but we relish design collaborations— changing dimensions, specifications, finishes—to match a designer’s vision and floor plan. The showroom is both a creative hub and a workroom. We think that will speak to Atlanta designers. Now open at ADAC, Ste. 139, (470) 355-6139

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Welcome to Atlanta! We’ve visited your showrooms in the past in High Point, New York, and AmericasMart, and we're thrilled to hear that you’ve opened a stand-alone showroom for Julian Chichester and Mr Brown London at ADAC. Why Atlanta? JULIAN CHICHESTER: We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with Atlanta over the years. Julian Chichester and Mr Brown styles seem to resonate with Southern designers and their clients. As a furniture designer, my inspiration comes from classic English furniture-making traditions, very much updated and modernized for today. Isn’t this quite like what I’ve heard called the New South? Style 16

steeped in tradition but entirely current, in step with our modern world. AH&L: I’ve heard Julian Chichester and Mr Brown London referred to as brother brands. What are their main differences? JC: Well, there are certain familiar associations, but no sibling rivalry, I promise. Actually, I see the brands quite differently, and there are very real material differences. Julian Chichester designs are reinventions of traditional, very often midcentury, forms realized in unique and innovative finishes, from vellum (which we pioneered), to metallic shagreen, as just two examples. I work out Julian Chichester finishes with great care over time; it’s a passion. Mr Brown brings

“Combining dreams with reality is a challenge, but it’s at the heart of what we do for our architecture and design clients,” say Brooke and Steve Giannetti. “We decided to apply this process to our own life.”

FROM BEAUTY TO BOUNTY, Brooke and Steve Giannetti’s Patina Farm, located in the rolling hills of Ojai, California, is a study in living meaningfully, and with purpose. You can call it high-end homesteading—the couple are proprietors of Giannetti Home, a full-service architectural and interior design firm, and also operate a Santa Barbara-based home furnishings boutique—but the reality is that tending to a property which includes four dogs, miniature breeds of goats, sheep and donkeys, dozens of chickens and even a house bunny, is not for the faint of heart. And that’s just the family of animals the couple have

assembled. Gardening—and the daily routine of farm living—have become full-blown passions; time spent weeding, planting and watering their rose and lavender gardens, and creating a veritable potager-to-plate lifestyle feel less like chores, and more like forms of daily meditation, say the former urban dwellers. This is Patina Farm, the enchanting, European-influenced estate that provided the inspiration for the couple’s first book of the same name. The Giannetti’s newest tome, Patina Living (Gibbs Smith, $40), provides a much more intimate glimpse into the landscape that nurtures their soul. Sprays 19

“The fabric of our daily life is a weaving of animals, gardens, family time and work,” say the Giannettis of the brood of farm animals they’ve assembled on their Ojai, Caliornia, farm. “We’ve come to realize that it is the living things that bring deeper meaning to our days. It is the pleasure we feel when we are working in the vegetable garden or sitting under that massive oak tree.”

of lavender are plucked for the linen closet; rose petals are an indulgent addition to a luxurious soak in the tub; and crisp greens and succulent vegetables from the potager nourish their family. “We’ve come to realize that it is the living things that bring deeper meaning to our days,” says Brooke. “It is the pleasure we feel when we are working in the vegetable garden or sitting under that massive oak tree, listening to the water as it flows through our fountain. It is these moments during our day that make our life worthwhile.” Indeed, the most enjoyable part of the Patina Living journey lies not just in the idyllic nature of their property, but also in sharing the couple’s day-in-the-life narrative and lessons that the Giannettis have learned along the way.

Steve and Brooke Giannetti are the owners of the full-service architectural and interior design firm Giannetti Home. Patina Living (Gibbs Smith, $40), available at booksellers on April 19, opens the doors to their Ojai, California, farm, where they live with their children, four dogs, miniature breeds of goats, sheep and donkeys, dozens of chickens, and Hector, the house bunny.

CAPTIVATING GARDEN GATES From stately to charming and decorative to practical, great garden entrances and fencing center our attention—and frame nature beyond Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

ORIGINS Although the gate is not as old as the wheel, it has been present throughout global societies for millennia. Garden gates have been found in all ancient civilizations, and whether in Asia or Europe, cultural tastes of the period infused practical building materials to create gates both grand and humble. At this time, we are more aware of their endurance and impact than their origins.

Royal Roots From the majestic iron-and-gold gates of Versailles and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, to the stately entrances of Dumbarton Oaks and the Swan House, to the simple pickets surrounding the Smith Family Farm at the Atlanta History Center and Colonial Williamsburg, garden gates have long proved their worth as enchanting architectural elements that protect flora and produce from unwanted intruders. 22

A commanding landscape by John Howard. A fresh design by Carson McElheney. A poolside iron gate with Greek key detailing shines at a historic Lewis “Buck Crook residence.

Characteristics and Construction Garden gates are most frequently constructed from iron or wood, and decorative characteristics range from highly ornate to plain. Because gates are a practical consideration, they must both reflect the gardens they guard as well as function for the use of the space. Some gates are operated by highly technical electronic coordination, while others are opened with a simple latch. The range of aesthetics is as wide as the continents they span, and even in America, our gates range from the simple to the splendid.

Mass Market Like a front door, the garden gate should relate to the architecture of the residence and establish the tone of the garden. In many installations, gates are crafted specifically for each garden, though prefabricated garden gates are available through many vendors. Materials have not significantly changed: Wood and iron are still the most commonly used materials. However, prefabricated gates constructed from weather-resistant materials such as Trex or vinyl make installation and maintenance easy. Regardless of grandeur or simplicity, of custom or premade construction, the garden gate still entices us to explore the world within. 23

SOUTHEASTERN SHOWHOUSE

Written and Produced by LORI JOHNSTON

THE FOURTH ANNUAL Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, a new estate on Buckhead’s Garmon Road, is a month away from its debut, and will be open to the public for tours from May 9 to June 2. Once a playground for Buckhead families, the 14-acre site, with its well-known swimming pond, served as a hunting grounds and weekend retreat for the family of Joseph Madison High. Its historic relevance and hill setting inspired a transitional style achieved by a harmonious blend of materials. The estate home, built by Robert Donner of Southern Gentry Homes, will showcase a wide array of materials, including painted brick, natu-

ral stone, slate, metal roofing, steel-glazed entry doors and timber columns. The design of the 12,268-square-foot home, which is situated on 5.2 acres, pulls from Lowcountry concepts, says architect Dietrich T. Logan of Logan Design Group. To emphasize the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, the home features roof overhangs at nearly 3 feet deep, entry porches, a loggia and a two-story great room that opens up to an expansive terrace and overlooks the pond, which holds memories for longtime area families. The master suite features a front-facing veranda; the landscape design is by Joe A. Gayle & Associates.

SAVANNAH’S PLANT

RIVERSIDE DISTRICT HOTELIER RICHARD KESSLER is confident he knows what luxury visitors in Savannah desire. Italian sculpture, glittering crystals, themes from mythology and a fountain inspired by the Bellagio in Las Vegas are all part of his plans for the sprawling Plant Riverside District. “All we do is high design,” he says. With The Kessler Collection’s most expensive project, at $300 million, he seeks to redefine Savannah’s River Street with a mixed-use entertainment complex that encompasses more than 650,000 square feet. A 419-room JW Marriott hotel will join a Live Nation entertainment venue and more than a dozen shops, art galleries and restaurants. The complex is centered on the adaptive reuse of a power plant built in 1912. As one of five major buildings in Plant Riverside, it will hold the majority of the hotel rooms and is set to open in the late summer. The Atlantic, another part of the hotel set to open in 2020, will showcase a handsome and modern nautical style. The Three Muses building will highlight Europeaninspired decor. Kessler also has restored Savannah’s 23,000-square-foot Armstrong Mansion, an Italian Renaissance Revival home built in 1919, for his personal residence and ultraluxe exclusive events. 28

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham EVERYBODY’S WORKING for the weekend, or so the Loverboy song goes. And it’s true. From the time we wake up Monday morning until Friday finally rolls around, most of us are counting down the days until we can relax, sleep late, recharge our batteries and binge-watch our favorite shows. My ideal weekend would begin at noon on Friday with lunch and a glass (or two) of champagne at Anis, followed by a little light shopping at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, where I would pick up trifle or two at Hermès or Dior. (If I were many decades younger, I might also venture into La Perla to pick up something racy, but considering I’ve been single since the Clinton administration, I say why bother.) Then, off to home, where it’s caftan and slippers for me. After all, one needs to be comfortable while supping on cheese and crackers and catching the latest Hallmark movie. Will it be Candace Cameron Bure starring in that night’s film? Or Lacey Chabert? No matter, because I’ve never met a Hallmark movie I didn’t like. My dream Saturday would involve sleeping past 7 a.m. and hopping in the car for a pastry run to Alon’s Bakery & Market. With breakfast behind me, it would be off to hunt for treasures at Interiors Market, Antiques & Beyond, Now & Again and all of the enticing shops along Miami Circle. Somewhere along the way, I would find that red chinoiserie secretary that has thus far remained elusive plus a piece by Maison Jansen at a rock-bottom price. (One can dream.) Rounding out my weekend would be Saturday night dinner with friends, an evening that would likely entail a lot of gossip and probably a lot of wine. And Sunday? That would be a day of rest, lounging in bed on my Porthault sheets and watching Netflix or Amazon Prime for hours on end. Truth be told, my weekends don’t come close to being this pleasant, but it’s fun to fantasize about a weekend that doesn’t involve laundry or housework. 31

COSMOPOLITAN COOL ECCO’s new stand-alone concept in Buckhead combines cultured cuisine with urbane style

Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN

WHEN CONCEPTUALIZING THE THIRD LOCATION of its European-influenced concept Ecco—which already had iterations in Midtown and at the Atlanta airport—Fifth Group Restaurants sought to create an evolution, not a copy, of the restaurant’s existing brand. While guests will find a few favorite dishes (namely the goat cheese balls) and familiar design aspects, the new Ecco Buckhead—which opened next to Phipps Plaza in November 2018—offers a largely unique menu and feel than its predecessors. “One of my goals as we worked on the opening menu was to present Atlantans with dishes we believe haven’t really been explored or perfected elsewhere in the city,” says executive chef Andrea Mobtobbio, who also drew inspiration from a trip he took to Spain and Italy with fellow Fifth Group chefs. “The concept isn’t boxed in by only Italian, Spanish or other country-specific influences, which allows us to get really creative with the menu.” Expect dishes such as parsnip risotto cacio e pepe, wood-grilled skirt steak, as well as shareable options including wood-fired focaccia and yellowtail tartare. Conceptualized by The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, the design “was initially inspired by the aesthetic of Ecco Midtown, but specific design elements differ in an effort to evolve the restaurant concept,” says Vajra Stratigos, Fifth Group Restaurants partner and director of food & beverage standards. Circular chandeliers echo the Midtown location, as does a racetrack-style bar, which is larger “to accommodate the after-work crowds in the neighborhood,” Stratigos says.

COASTAL CLASSIC For a childhood friend, designer LIZ WILLIAMS creates a forever home with a serene palette and an elegant coastal attitude Written by ALICE WELSH DOYLE Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL

Laid-back Luxe Lowcountry and Creole influences are evident in this lake home's brick and whitewashed cypress siding, says architect Thad Truitt. Homeowner Elizabeth Brunson wanted to combine her native Atlanta’s traditional style with the laid-back vibe of Lake Rabun’s lakeside living.

Restful Retreat Designer Liz Williams infused the family room with quiet sophistication, employing neutral upholstery from Ferrell Mittman through Ainsworth-Noah and a fireside bench from Holland Macrae. A Rose Tarlow iron chandelier strikes a casual note; the Lowcountry landscape above the fireplace is by Charleston artist Laura Lloyd Fontaine.

W WHEN PLANNING HER DREAM HOME in St. Simons’ Frederica community, Elizabeth Brunson enlisted the help of one of her oldest friends—Atlanta interior designer Liz Williams. “Elizabeth and I met in fourth grade and were fast friends,” says Williams. “I’m familiar with her style, and we like a lot of the same things, so working together was a breeze.” Elizabeth’s husband, Trey, also enlisted the help of a close friend—Chip Evans of Evans & Varnadoe Construction—to build the home. The Brunsons had owned the lot for eight years, waiting for the development to mature before beginning to build. The goal of the team, which also included architect Thad Truett, was to create a home that worked for the present and beyond. “Our sons are almost grown, but we built with an expectation that one day they would marry and bring their families home, so we even included a guesthouse,” says Elizabeth.

41

Williams_Brunson.indd 41

Formal Flair In the dining room, Williams considered the homeowner’s penchant for traditional style, so family antiques blend in beautifully. Pretty floral panels in a Lee Jofa fabric with Scalamandré trim grace the windows while an Oushak from Azra Oriental Rugs softens the stained white oak floors used throughout the main living spaces.

Idyllic Isle The house sits on Lake Frederica in a golf and boating community, which makes getting on the water a breeze for the passionate fishermen in the family.

For the exteriors, Truett looked to classic Southern vernaculars. “There is some Lowcountry and Creole influence, with references to the Louisiana architect A. Hays Town. It’s a hybrid,” he says. “I wanted the house to look like it had been here forever, and think it conveys that,” adds Elizabeth. The home’s layout included spaces tailored to meet the Brunsons’ needs—a designated closet for sporting and fishing equipment; a room for watching Georgia football; a screened porch with a fireplace and custom cooking area; and even a dog shower in the laundry room. The home’s overall style skews classic, says Williams, with discrete nods to the location such as the tabby fireplace on the porch and the pecky cypress in the study. “I grew up in Atlanta and love a more traditional look, nothing trendy or too modern,” says Elizabeth. “I also spent many happy times at my grandparents’ Lake Rabun home, and I wanted the house to reflect that lifestyle as well as the coast.” The result of this team work is rooms that feel casual yet sophisticated, with a pretty palette woven throughout. “Elizabeth loves blues and greens and those colors appear in every space and work perfectly with the setting,” says Williams. To achieve a sense of comfort, the designer also incorporated a mix of antiques and newer pieces in each room, along with botanical fabrics, unique wallpapers and beautiful rugs. “Liz understood me in every regard,” says Elizabeth. “Everything is executed beautifully. The flow between the rooms is seamless.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Feminine Feel The palette throughout the house draws from the lakeside setting and rich foliage. “I’m drawn to soothing colors—nothing too bold,” says Elizabeth. The windows in that same fabric are edged in a Scalamandré trim in a color that plays off the bedside lamps by Joseph Konrad.

WHEN AN ATLANTA COUPLE’S CHARMING COTTAGE on Lake Burton began to feel too cramped for their growing brood, they made the difficult decision to tear it down and build a larger house, forgoing two summers there in the process. Designed by architect Tim Adams and interior designer Coley Cuttino, the result is a far more spacious stone-and-shingle dwelling. “This house pulls you in,” Adams says. “I gravitate toward a rambling, romantic style.” Although the home’s rustic exterior suits its forested lakefront locale, the interior has a more contemporary feel, which is exemplified by a wall of steel-framed windows in the great room, whose lofted ceiling allows light to filter in from the windows on the upper level. “I don’t like dark houses, so I’m always looking for opportunities to pierce spaces with windows,” Adams says. The steel windows coordinate with the custom metal hood over the range in the kitchen, which has been outfitted with tall cabinetry in a blue-gray hue and thick black granite countertops with a chiseled edge. The cabinets in the bar and the upstairs morning kitchen are painted in the same hue, as are the doors throughout. “Most of these rooms are open to each other, so repeating the color throughout makes it feel very cohesive and adds a sense of coziness,” Cuttino says.

Classic Refresh In the lower level recreation room, concrete flooring complements the shiplap walls and woodbeamed ceiling. Barn-style doors close the space off from the bunk room.

Flanked by painted doors with transom windows, a stone fireplace does the same for the open living area, where a sofa and a quartet of matching chairs in neutral fabric surround a large wooden cocktail table. Patterned draperies and complementary accent pillows keep things interesting. “Most of our inspiration images were rooted in a Belgian look,” Cuttino says, pointing to the walnut-stained flooring and plaster walls. To maximize the tight buildable footprint, Adams incorporated bay windows and lofted ceilings wherever possible. In the master suite, for example, reclaimed wooden beams frame a cozy bay 62

furnished with a pair of plush chairs. It’s one of the many nooks and crannies that Adams and Cuttino created for the client’s large extended family, including a shiplap-walled bunk room outfitted with double beds. “Shiplap has a subtle texture that’s calming,” Adams explains. Although the owners missed two summers at the lake, they have more than made up for the lost time. “In the past, it was used mainly as a summer house, but now they use it year-round,” Cuttino says. “It’s unfussy, and they are instantly relaxed as soon as they walk through the door.” See Resources, Back of Book.

With offices in Atlanta, Montana and Charleston, the design firm will also open a studio and store in Rosemary Beach, Florida, in summer of 2020. “We’ve kind of become experts on doing secondary homes,” Melanie Turner says. “We try to be very thoughtful with these projects and design spaces that make life easy, especially at the beach, where there are no rules.” It was only natural, then, that when a longtime client—a successful Atlanta-based dentist who breeds Arabian horses in her spare time—set out to create an Alys Beach refuge where she could escape the hustle of everyday life, she turned to Melanie Turner

Turner_Alyse.indd 73

Interiors with complete confidence. “She trusted in us enough to want to be hands-off,” says Turner. The homeowner’s only direction for the project—which totals just 30 feet wide—was “light, bright and comfortable,” Turner adds. “The key thing that she wanted in her life was simplicity, ease and restfulness. She leads a very full life, and this home creates that sense of escapism in an area that is ideal for relaxing.” To make the most of the home’s smaller footprint, Turner took an intentional, edited approach in collaboration with developer and architect Paul Geary of T.S. Adams Studio. “The beauty of this particular house is that it turns inward on itself. We thought of it as a whole and then brought it back down into smaller spaces.” 73

Idyllic Escape A pair of retractable windows—concealed by Ulster Linen drapery fabric—connect the breezy living room to the courtyard pool. A Cisco Brothers sofa and rattan chair from Bali offer chic spots for socializing or enjoying the views. Stone-like concrete tile flooring by Peacock Pavers feature porous properties and are designed to help catch sand.

Seaside Style Connected to a row of units, the home— designed by architect Paul Geary of T.S. Adams Studio—is 30 feet wide and 3,490 square feet.

Dual master bedrooms on the second and ground floors create the feel of separate wings, while open living areas provide ample space to socialize. In the living room, a pair of accordion doors retracts completely into the wall, allowing the room to open up to the patio and pool. A stone-like concrete floor tile by Peacock Pavers—featuring porous properties to help catch sand—was used both indoors and out, making the spaces seem larger and more 74

cohesive. “We really massaged the spaces and tried to get these large rooms that open up into each other, with the kitchen, living, dining and outdoor spaces all becoming one,” says Turner. In contrast with the home’s plaster walls and ceilings, Turner incorporated an abundance of texture via carefully selected accessories that were sourced locally as well as from the designer’s frequent travels. The light fixture in the entryway, for instance, was

crafted from a basket from Bali, while the kitchen light fixtures were purchased from local lifestyle store Outpost. “It’s really important for us as designers to always try to buy within the area so that local shops are represented within the house and it feels like you’re part of the community,” she says. Another focus was fostering a sense of ease. In the kitchen, bowls and plates are housed on open shelving, “so now you’re not

looking for something,” Turner says. “You’re at your second home, you don’t want to have to open all these cupboards to have to figure out where something is.” “Everything is about being thoughtful and making your life easy and not having to think,” she adds. “It’s all done in a way where you don’t realize what we’re doing, but we’re constantly calming you down.” See Resources, Back of Book. 75

Coastal Comfort One of two master bedrooms, this upstairs master suite is tucked away in what is “essentially its own wing, Turner says. A pecky cypress ceiling provides texture, as do a Made Goods chandelier and Surya rug. LIFE

END NOTE

NAMASTE … AT HOME

SOME PEOPLE ESCAPE to Paris or Turks and Caicos. Others escape to the grocery store—especially husbands when mothers-in-law are visiting. Many people escape to yoga, a form of worship practiced by many in California. I’ve been to two yoga classes, and I’ve been kicked out of both. In Atlanta, the woman next to me fell asleep and began to snore, while the rotund man behind me started groaning as if he was giving birth to triplets, so could I help it if I was crying with laughter? Upon opening my eyes, the instructor informed me, from above, that it was in fact I who was disruptive, and it was time for me to leave. Nevertheless, I persisted, this time in California (after all, it is the Land of Namaste). Unfortunately, at a class for beginners, I protested (“Ouch!”) when the instructor yanked my leg over my head. When I explained that I would have put my leg there if my 88

leg had been able to go there, she wryly suggested a different regimen, so I escaped to the pool and a spin class. I’ve experienced the luxury of escaping to many beautiful, interesting, inspiring locations around the world. I’ve mastered the art of escaping emails, text messages and the telephone when I go to the gym. But after living in many cities throughout the U.S. and pursuing a career that revolves around beautiful dwellings, I’ve decided that the most important escape is the one we all have most readily available: home. Whether curling up with a good book in front of the fire, enjoying silence on the deck with a glass of wine or cozying up on the perfect mattress, our homes should envelop us; they should provide our greatest escape. May Atlanta’s beautiful homes and talented designers inspire you to escape to your happiest place: home. Namaste.

PHOTOGRAPHED BY EMILY FOLLOWILL; INTERIOR DESIGN BY CAROLE WEAKS

She’s escaped via global adventures, yoga and seas of fabrics at ADAC, but no escape is better than finding peace at home, says Suzanna Cullen Hamilton
