SPRING! IT’S MY TONIC. Towering cherry blossom trees dangling in glorious succession; pretty piles of camellia petals blanketing the ground—my love for Atlanta is practically rooted in the beauty of the season. The subtle fruity fragrance that permeates our leafy surrounds feels downright intoxicating after months of cool, crisp air. It’s as if we’ve been granted permission to be at ease once again thanks to the city’s lush cocoon. Speaking of ease, there’s a sense of joy that pervades this issue. The pride Atlantans take in their home has always inspired me, but these projects rejoice in the art of living well—and their hymn is palpable. As architect William B. Litchfield says of his award-winning project (page 38) , “I’ve always believed that a house tells you what to do—what it needs or wants to be. You just have to listen.” Here’s to drinking in the joy of design this spring, both inside and out, and indulging in its unspoken treasures.

WHERE DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR ONE-OF-A-KIND CREATIONS? IS IT CLIENT- OR DESIGNER-DRIVEN? I have a forte for being able to read what designers and clients envision for a space. I prefer to listen to them and see the space rather than rely on too many outside visual influences. Designers give me a general idea of how they want the room to feel, and my best work evolves from listening. My

MASSIVE BRONZE SCULPTURES DEPICT THE AMERICAN WEST, and a towering totem pole stands among the oak trees at the entrance of the Booth Western Art Museum. Inside, collections span from Henry Inman’s renowned 19thcentury paintings of Native Americans to the brightly colored Western series by pop artist Andy Warhol. of 20th- and 21st-century Western art, the Booth museum, founded in 2003, might focus on a nostalgic world, but it is housed in a contemporary building whose juxtaposition of old and new, bold and delicate is not only striking but perhaps a reflection of America herself. “Anybody who’s into art and might look down on Western art will have a hard time doing it here,” says Executive Director Seth Hopkins, “because the Booth has examples of most modern art movements and styles,
so there’s something for everyone.” Hopkins is one of the most respected museum directors in the country. In 2011 he was elected president of the Museums West Consortium, a group founded by 13 of the most prestigious museums in the U.S. focused on the American Western genre. More recently, he has been recognized for both preserving Western culture—and cementing its place in the Southeast. It is a balancing act to bridge the stereotypes and traditions of the West with more modern and contemporary pieces; however, the Booth is a feast for the eyes in the form of both the architecture (the original structure’s shape is referred to as “modern pueblo”) and its treasured collection. A trove of paintings, sculptures and objects documents the historical relevance of the region, while a vast wing devoted to contemporary pieces reveals a more imaginative, emotive feeling. Thanks to engaging artist lectures and symposiums, and annual events such as the Gala, the Cowboy Gathering and the Chuck Wagon Cook-Off draw huge crowds, attracting everyone from fine art patrons to students. Special exhibits such as the recent Ansel Adams exhibit attract national attention and bring in visitors from across the country. “We want to be a place where things don’t just hang on the wall,” says Hopkins. boothmuseum.org

Atlanta History Center’s New Future ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER CEO SHEFFIELD HALE hopes the comfort food from Jenny Levison’s Souper Jenny will encourage Levison’s fans to find a similar comfort level at the renovated center. The new limestoneand–curved glass façade more than doubles Souper Jenny’s capacity, and the relocated eatery is a visible part of the museum’s ongoing transformation. Souper Jenny will share space with a bookstore featuring more than 500 titles, along with locally made pottery, jewelry and other crafts. Richard Howorth and Lyn Roberts of Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi, provided design consultation for a café-bookstore that is unlike anything else in Atlanta, center officials say. “One of the great things about Souper Jenny being here is that you’ll be able to stay and eat,” says Hale. You can graze on the food, and then go back and graze in the museum.”

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham BACK IN THE OLD DAYS, the arrival of spring heralded that time-honored, labor-intensive domestic custom known as spring cleaning. Room by room one went (sometimes with the assistance of a maid), dusting, waxing and polishing a home into a springtime beacon of order and cleanliness. And, I must say, the results were dazzling. Chandeliers shone, floors gleamed and all was right with the world. Unfortunately, spring cleaning seems to have lost its luster, a onetime emblem of domestic pride now considered arcane and too much trouble. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Based on the way some people look today (especially my fellow travelers on a recent flight), I can only surmise that their houses look equally dirty. If one can’t bother to clean oneself, then one likely doesn’t go to the trouble of spring cleaning one’s house, either. What’s more, the sales of cleaning supplies have fallen, at least according to a recent article I read. It seems that Comet, Windex and the like are no longer considered household essentials by some. I take this to mean that not only is spring cleaning becoming a thing of the past, but cleaning at any other time of the year is, too. Not to me, however. I’m a sucker for cleaning supplies, and the more specialized they are, the better. Peruse my pantry shelves, and you’ll find cleaners made especially for microwaves, dishwashers and coffee makers. Metal polishes are in abundance, too, including those for brass, silver, chrome and copper. And I have a particular weakness for products that have been around for generations, such as 20 Mule Team Borax, Bon Ami and Bar Keepers Friend. But my very favorite cleaning product has to be classic Clorox bleach. I don’t know whether it’s environmentally friendly or not, but I must admit that nothing kills germs quite like good old bleach. As you can tell, I’m doing my part to keep the cleaningsupply industry thriving and, for that matter, the tradition of spring cleaning, too. As the old saying goes, a clean house is a happy house.

EVERY HOUSE TELLS A STORY, and when a major renovation is part of the narrative, the tale can sometimes take a few dark twists and turns. Fortunately that proved to be anything but the case for a 1930s-era, Georgian-style beauty in Buckhead that underwent a yearlong makeover in the hands of architect William B. Litchfield and designer Jackye Lanham. “Bill and I have worked together on a number of projects, including another house for these homeowners,” says Lanham. “We’re all at a point where we speak the same design language and can almost finish one another’s sentences.” That collegial spirit between architect and designer, along with clients who have sophisticated tastes and a deep interest in the process, resulted in a house with a dramatic—but practically drama-free—transformation. “When the wife first saw the house from the outside, it spoke to her immediately, and it was in a neighborhood she loved,” says Lanham. Although it had been through prior renovations and updates, the floor plan needed some rearranging to fit the family’s needs. After an initial walk-through with Lanham and Litchfield, ideas quickly began to surface. “I’ve always believed that a house tells you what to do—what it needs or wants to be. You just have to listen,” says Litchfield. Here, good bones, generous proportions, and great natural light provided a solid story line. But the architect wanted to strengthen the house’s Georgian-style roots and take them in a more Regency direction, which meant, among other things, 41

clockwise from right Litchfield created a gallery from the front door to the family room to ease flow through the main level. “This is an unpretentious couple and they didn’t want anything fussy,” says Lanham; that includes
unassuming arrangements of flowers throughout the house. An L-shaped sofa in the crd room provides an ideal spot to read. opposite Lanham painted the dining room ceiling blue and upholstered walls in a Jasper fabric.

a face-lift for the front façade that included adding a portico with refined columns, and a rethinking of windows to make them more stylistically appropriate. Inside, the design team plotted not only to “charm the house up,” as Litchfield says, but also to make significant changes that involved reconfiguring and ultimately relocating some rooms, including the kitchen, to create better connections between spaces so they would also relate more clearly to one another. “For instance, after you came into the entry, you walked through the dining room to get to the living areas, and that didn’t feel quite right to me,” says Litchfield. He designed an arcade with graceful columns to foster better circulation and moved the dining room off to the side, without boxing it in, to create a natural progression through the house on axis with the front door. For Lanham, skillfully rendered architectural details allowed her to eloquently articulate her decorating point of view, one that feels light and airy but well grounded with comfortable upholstery and beautiful antiques. “The wife gravitates toward a look that is tailored but feminine, with soft colors and not too much pattern,” says the designer. Many of the furnishings came from the home Lanham decorated for the couple before this one, a larger house with much bolder European influences. “We still loved those things, and it wasn’t like we needed to start from scratch. The challenge was making some of it fit in this environment,” she says. Lanham didn’t hesitate to get creative. Among the things she hated to leave behind from the former house were curtains that had been made up with a striking woven pattern. “It was killing me that we were going to abandon them, so we took them apart and upholstered the walls in the dining room. I call it my bit of a Scarlett O’Hara moment,” she says. That fictional character’s ability to give window dressing a whole new meaning is perhaps an apt metaphor. Indeed, with its sensitive renovation and stylish decoration, Lanham and Litchfield have written the next chapter for this house, too, one with a satisfying—and thoroughly classic— ending. See Resources, Back of Book. 44

WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER AMY MORRIS’ CLIENT FOUND THE PERFECT HOME for her busy family of five—a great location and expansive property—she fell in love immediately. After the initial attraction wore off, however, she realized that the Sandy Springs house needed help in almost every respect. Stephen Fuller of Stephen Fuller Designs was hired to execute substantial renovations, and Morris was enlisted to bring big city style. “The lovely architectural interior finishes give off a more rustic farmhouse feel,” says Morris. “My client is extremely chic, so I wanted to make sure the house reflected that side of her as well.”
52
Many of the rooms exude femininity—curved legs, lacquered finishes and shots of purple—which Morris balanced with clean-lined furniture in tailored menswear fabrics, frill-free window treatments and shades of charcoal gray. Purple may not be the easiest color to decorate with, but variations of the shade, from pale lavender to aubergine, prevent it from feeling heavy-handed. “So many people are afraid of color, so they keep everything monochromatic,” says Morris. “You can add color without plastering it everywhere like the overdone look of the ’90s with all the cranberries and greens. I think some color adds personality, and my client looks great in these rooms.” The home may be pretty, but it also has many practical elements for a single mother of four who loves to entertain. Morris had the plans changed to create a galley-style butler’s pantry with room for everything, including an apron sink and a library ladder on wheels to reach the highest shelves. The cabinets, some of which are faced with chicken wire, harmonize with the farmhouse finishes throughout the rest of the house. In the kitchen, a faucetless sink serves as a built-in ice bucket for easy access during parties. The laundry room even has a separate wash-up area for dirty feet and pets. Light fixtures, especially the oversized chandeliers, make striking appearances throughout the home, even in the outdoor dining space. “I think lighting is so important. It’s like the jewelry for the rooms,” says Morris. “I don’t believe in a lot of fussy accessories. I like things that make a statement.” She also underscores the importance of antiques, which she intersperses with more modern elements. It’s a strategy that consistently strives for balance, resulting in interiors that suit her client in the best possible way. See Resources, Back of Book.

SELF-PROCLAIMED FRANCOPHILE Meg Harrington and her husband, Scott, built their dream maison in 2008, but with daughter Molly away at college and her sister, Lilly, up next, the couple realized their 6,400-square-foot haven might be more of a headache. They decided to walk through their home and note only the spaces they used daily and—sacre bleu!—in the end, the list consisted of only four rooms: the kitchen, family room, master bedroom, and covered porch. “That exercise sealed the deal. We were ready to design something that was small,
62
efficient and oozing with personality,” Meg says. After discovering a charming 1930s Brookhaven cottage that was small on square footage but big on personality, Meg began dreaming of ways to incorporate her fondness for all things French into a smart, functional and ultimately chic nest. As with their previous home renovation, the Harringtons partnered with architect Linda MacArthur and builder Michael Ladisic—known fondly to Meg as “the dream team”—to create a savvy space that uses every inch of their new 3,000-square-foot home.

“OUR NEST IS A HAPPY MARRIAGE BETWEEN PRECIOUS ANTIQUES, Q ORIGINAL ARTWORK AND A SOUPÇON Ç OF ALL THINGS FRENCH. IT’S ABOUT THE MAGIC OF MIXING.” —MEG HARRINGTON
First up was the living room, which boasted great natural light but a low and uninspiring ceiling. Because the home’s exterior sports a Nantucket cottage aesthetic, they vaulted the ceiling and installed shiplap siding to continue the Americana appeal. The original 1930s Rumford-style fireplace was too narrow for real logs, so gas logs were installed, an idea Meg originally fought but now enjoys for the clickof-a-switch convenience. Also, as co-owner of Huff Harrington Fine Art and Huff Harrington Home, she naturally believes that a television should not be the focal point of a mantel. So the talented team at Ladisic Fine Homes created a shiplap-sided cabinet to hide the silver screen when it’s not in use, and Meg adorned it with a French iron bolt she fortuitously discovered in the South of France. The kitchen welcomes streams of natural light that illuminate the sleek cabinets constructed by Mike Whitbeck of WCC Custom Cabinets. Its elegant, clean-lined paneled
doors align with Meg’s goals for the kitchen: simplicity and efficiency. She partnered with Atlanta Kitchens and selected the perfect Turkish marble for both the countertops and the adjoining galley butler’s pantry that is the perfect place to store both rarely used appliances and modern necessities. The dining room is stocked with family heirlooms, such as Meg’s mother’s crystal chandelier from Stockholm, and French antiques, such as her cherished walnut armoire that was reassigned from the kitchen to its rightful place in the dining room. But while many a meal is consumed in this French Country salon, the Harringtons spend most of their time on the covered back porch. The fireplace makes any time of year comfortable, and a mounted (and concealed) television is perfect for roaring game days. “We eat most meals on the porch, as it’s a true extension of our home,” Meg says. “It’s our favorite space in the whole house.” See Resources, Back of Book. 65

clockwise from right The Sandy Springs home, with its American Federal front façade, is modeled after the historic Davenport House in Savannah, Georgia, and overlooks the Chattahoochee River. A crape myrtle towers above outdoor seating near the property’s pool. front of the home with the Lowcountry river-house look of the back. “The house is very classic and charming,” says Missy M. Madden, Bellwether co-founder. “The homeowners were open to a clean slate.” The landscape design shifts from formal to more organic as the property nears river’s edge. Bellwether refurbished the front landscape and added a new driveway with a textured mixture of limestone, pea gravel and reclaimed granite cobblestone. Closer to the house, the garden is more formal with clipped boxwoods, hydrangeas and a bluestone walkway. A native serviceberry tree and a water feature made from a river boulder and add an organic appeal that harmonizes with the nearby water. A shed, once overgrown with ivy, now boasts fresh paint, while a new inground fire pit serves as the perfect site for outdoor gatherings. The grown-up landscaping lends itself to entertaining for all occasions—whether an intimate get-together or a bustling fête. Occasionally, the Bellwether team even receives texts from the homeowners, both doctors, expressing their newfound love for their reimagined space. And that, of course, “is really the joy in that project,” says Bellwether co-founder H. Todd Yeager. 71

MARCIA SHERRILL marcia’s favorite places
THE GUESTHOUSE
FOR PROPER ATLANTA HOSTESSES, IT’S NOTHING BUT THE BEST FOR OUR GUESTS. MARCIA EXPLAINS WHY GUESTHOUSES ARE SO MUCH BETTER THAN A HOTEL (OR AIRBNB).
WE’RE FORTUNATE THAT WE ATLANTANS ARE RAISED IN A CULTURE of hospitality. When my grandparents were living, there was rarely a weekend when their guesthouse wasn’t full of visitors and friends. Sure, it was a humble affair, with cast-off furniture from the big house, cabinets with missing doors and chairs that wobbled like a hurricane was rocking the house. But, my did it have its comforts! There was a fireplace, plenty of reading material, a fully stocked bar, and, of course, a decent bathroom. At first, none of their eight children had the forethought to build their own guest quarters, even though our homes were bursting, especially during football season. Our poor pleb guests were relegated to sleeping on sofas or, worse, blow-up mattresses (and on one occasion, an overserved guest preferred the bathtub). Now, we soon realized that this 80
is not a civilized way to live. And, thankfully (if not surprisingly), it seems that guesthouses are currently being built with abandon by my relatives. My brother’s guesthouse, natch, is decorated with designer fabrics and antiques, and my sister-in-law has packed hers with food and toiletries. But even more exciting: My friends are getting into the act. My girlfriend Patricia’s artist studio serves double duty as a guesthouse. It’s packed with art, and the bathroom is practically a spa. She even installed a trundle bed into a wall. This is all to say: Who needs a hotel (or Airbnb?) when I can couch-surf my way through some of the South’s finest guesthouses? I get a mega dose of design, as well as the privacy to binge-watch Orange Is the New Black, and my hosts get freedom from my incessant chatter. See? Win-win.
