WELCOME
FROM THE EDITOR
happy hues PART INTUITION, PART SCIENCE—getting the formula for color precisely right in our interiors can seem downright daunting. How much is too much? Did I pay that much to make it look so subtle? For commitment-phobes like me, it’s far easier to use art and accessories as colorful accents than to determine the perfect paint color, grasscloth hue or embroidery thread. Perhaps that’s why I so enjoy taking a visual vacation courtesy of our color issue each year. For someone who is more classic than fearless (read: risk-averse!), I find that this issue is just the kind of caffeinated jolt I need to awaken my senses each spring, and move forward with making design decisions that will inevitably make our family’s home not just brighter, but happier, too. This month, we visit projects by interior designers who are also true artists in their field. Suzanne Kasler, Kay Douglass and Andrew Howard employ doses color so effortlessly and eloquently, the resulting subtle sophistication practically feels like alchemy. Speaking of color, there’s nothing like the natural hues outside our doors each spring. One visual vacation you won’t want to miss is Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2017 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, held at a historic estate in Buckhead’s Kingswood neighborhood through May 14. Here, you’ll find the work of more than 20 designers from across the Southeast, ise you’ll leave feeling nothing less than genuinely inspired. See you there!

eacock, emerald and cerulean are a few of interior designer Mallory Mathison Glenn’s favorite hues. “I like the balance of depth and clarity that these colors bring to a space,” she says. And, while these rich blues achieved a feeling of “cohesive calm” in her family’s former Peachtree Park abode, the designer admits that her home serves the ultimate laboratory—where design decisions are treated as experiments, not risks. After all, says Mathison Glenn: “Color makes me happy, and being happy at home is what it’s all about!” True to her bring-on-the-color mantra, the personal preferences of the client (in this case, herself) guided this project’s color story. In the dining room, for instance, her go-to neutral, a classic animal print, anchors the space, while a handpainted scenic mural, saturated emerald green silk curtains and white lacquer Chippendale chairs contribute to “the cheerful, sunny space I was looking to create for the backdrop for family breakfasts and dinner parties with friends.”

GOOD COLOR SCHEMES ALWAYS HAVE … Something that makes you smile—good color schemes evoke emotion. ♦ THE FRONT DOOR SHOULD ALWAYS … Make you very curious about what is behind it! ♦ WHEN WORKING WITH BOLD SHADES, ALWAYS ... Be confident. Never feel the need to explain yourself. “I love it” is all you need to say. ♦ POWDER ROOMS ARE A GREAT PLACE TO … Step out of your comfort zone in color and scale. A powder room doesn’t have to relate to the other spaces in the house—so use it as a decorating holiday!

or decorator Heather Hogan Roberts, creating bold color schemes is more instinctual than scientific. “I have learned over time to trust myself to let a pop of color shine versus take over the entire home,” Roberts says. And, while the circa-1941, Frazier and Bodin–designed home she shares with her family of five in North Buckhead was originally designed to be formal (think properly defined dining and living rooms), it’s Roberts’ joyfully tactile approach that keeps the spaces feeling not just fresh—but far from formal in application. Roberts personally gravitates towards sea foam green and ethereal blues, a color thread evident throughout the home’s first floor spaces, but she maintains that because her jewel box of a residence features perfectly square rooms, each space should be free to have its own look— or the creative license to stand alone. But don’t rely on daring patterns and bold prints alone to express your personality: “I have a collection of Portieux Vallerysthal glassware that gives just the right ‘wow,’” Roberts says.

or a pied-à-terre overlooking Chicago’s Lake Michigan, inspiration for the color scheme was as simple as looking out upon the city skyline from the condo’s 46th floor. “Preserving the view and not competing with it was a specific request of our client,” say Kelly Cole and Joann Kandrac of Atlanta design firm Kandrac & Cole. Because the condo was more of a second home, the designers gently pushed their client outside her comfort zone, infusing the space with subtly calming colors such as blush pink in the master bedroom, and stronger jolts such as emerald green in the sunroom, where a deep sectional provides both comfort and a perch for unencumbered views of Chicago. Still, the main color thread that ties the unit together is a soft gray that both reduces visual bulkiness and keeps the focus on glorious sunsets and the lake. Cole and Kandrac’s personal color mantra: “Be brave and go for it! Our best designs are those that have an unabashed yet curated dose of color.”

Our clients are MOST pleased in the end when they allow us to GENTLY push them outside their COMFORT ZONE.”
GOOD COLOR SCHEMES ALWAYS HAVE … An easygoing flow without being too “matchy-matchy,” and, of course, unexpected color in the form of a pillow, small chair or piece of art. ♦ WHEN WORKING WITH BOLD SHADES, NEVER … Overdo it. Not every element needs to be a “wow.” Some aspects of the design need to take a backseat so other details can shine. ♦ ALWAYS PAINT THE TRIM … Off-white, not bright white. A favorite is Sherwin-Williams West Highland White. ♦ A LOW-COMMITMENT WAY TO USE COLOR IS … With throw pillows, vases, objects or books. We use booksbythefoot.com to purchase books by color.

JUDY
BENTLEY
Known for her love of blue-and-white porcelains and timeless interiors, Judy Bentley has reaped dividends throughout her design career thanks to her knowing eye and beginnings in the business. WRITTEN BY Suzanna
Cullen Hamilton
After receiving a degree in special education from Georgia State University, Judy worked for Trust Company Bank as a recruiter. “I learned patience and psychology, and it gave me great business skills and connections. I don’t regret that experience,” she says. Her husband, Verney, was a successful real estate developer in Atlanta, so Judy gained an appreciation for interior design while working with him on projects. She was also a client of renowned designer Dan Carithers. Throughout the process, the two became such close friends that he hired her. Nine years later, she left Carithers’ practice to spend time with her ill father. “Dan and I had a beautiful relationship, and we accomplished great things together. I always let him have the front seat,” she says.
Interior Views Expands
While working for Carithers, Judy cultivated her own projects with clients she knew through her banking days. “I’ve always gotten clients by word of mouth who are quiet and private, and who do not want their projects seen,” she says. The owner of Interior Views is as renowned for her classic, refined interiors as she is for her discretion.
On the Horizon
Judy has projects throughout the Southeast, including Atlanta, Charleston and North Carolina. By keeping her firm small, she is able to oversee all aspects of the design process and communications. “I’m fortunate 24

to have had really great clients, and now I’m designing for their children. It means so much that I have enduring relationships in a field that I love.” Judy continues to entertain within the design community and has held numerous events at her home. In 2015 she participated in The Cathedral Antiques Show Tour of Homes, and in 2017 she’s hosting a brunch for the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

A Buckhead high-rise reveals designer Nina Nash’s eye for creating distinctively layered, fashion-forward interiors WRITTEN BY Lori Johnston PHOTOGRAPHED BY Chris Little
CHROME WAS ON A LONGTIME CLIENT’S WISH LIST for his new condo at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Buckhead. The request allowed Nina Nash of Mathews Furniture + Design to step out of her comfort zone while following her design mantra: “Be yourself. If you do what you love, it shows, and others will take notice.” Nash, who has degrees in graphic design and fine art, is known for infusing a love of the arts and fashion into her clean, comfortable interiors. She describes her signature 28

style as “a neutral base layered with gorgeous, unique textiles and special accessories,” adding, “It’s funny because I could also use that same sentence to describe the way I dress.” Wall and ceiling treatments accessorize her spaces, which, along with layers of art and books, keep the design from looking stark. To create sleek, masculine style for this high-rise condo, Nash and her partner, Don Easterling, also with Mathews Furniture + Design, lightened the existing heavy, brown interiors with a bit of shimmer and chrome. She and Easterling—who have worked together for a decade—selected furnishings that were distinctive but in a scale that did not detract from the high-rise experience, with its aerial views. “At night, when the lights from the city are twinkling below, it’s very soothing,” says Nash. SPRING SALE SNAPSHOT THE SALE OF AN “ENCHANTED” TUXEDO ROAD home shows that clever descriptions combined with chic design can pay off quickly, especially if it’s an in-demand price range. Agent Stacey Adams of Harry Norman, Realtors, used words like “palace of the soul” and “magically inclined” to help capture the essence of Joey Reiman and Cynthia Good’s Buckhead home. The 1949 home, featuring interiors by KIM ZIMMERMAN and priced at $2.576 million, went under contract in six days. While neutral palettes provide a blank slate, great design can energize and create excitement amid a sea of gray, Adams says. The couple increased ceiling and window heights in the three-bedroom, 4,554-square-foot home, retrofitted the cottage (built originally for square dancing, Good says) and worked with Matthew Quinn on a kitchen makeover with jewelry-like hardware. “With this influx of people from other cities across the country and other countries into Atlanta, I think the level of sophistication is on the rise,” says Good, CEO and founding editor of Little PINK Book. The $2 million-plus market has decisive but selective buyers and low inventory, says Adams. “This year, we’re going to see more sales in that $2 million-plus market,” she says. “Things are moving quickly.”

AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham DECADES AGO, WHEN ATLANTA WAS SMALLER and easier to navigate, my friends and I enjoyed practically everything the city had to offer. One of my favorite ways to spend an evening was to have a pretheater dinner at The Country Place (located at Colony Square), followed by a performance across the street at Symphony Hall or the Alliance Theatre. When we were in the mood for a little nightlife, we hit Gene & Gabe’s for cabaret or, if we were feeling particularly bold, Limelight for dancing. We visited the High Museum frequently, took in at least one Braves game a season and even dined at restaurants located in Downtown. Back then, getting around town was no big deal, so we went everywhere often. And today? I dread the thought of having to drive outside of my neighborhood. Traffic is such a nightmare that I’d rather stick close to home. But it isn’t just traffic that is keeping my friends and me home these days; it’s apathy. As a city, we seem to have adopted a lackadaisical attitude toward attending events and visiting new places. It’s as if there is so much out there to do that we don’t even try to do it. That’s sad, and I think it’s high time we try to make more of an effort to engage with our city, traffic allowing, of course. This spring and summer, I’m going to start doing the things I used to enjoy doing, like strolling in Virginia-Highland on a Saturday afternoon. I’m going to attend concerts at Chastain Park, just as I did when I was young. I plan to once again become a member of the High Museum, smell the roses at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, enjoy a Naked Dog and an F.O. at The Varsity, and peruse the antiquities at the Michael C. Carlos Museum. When I’ve done all that, I’ll go dancing like in the old days, although this time around, I’ll hit Johnny’s Hideaway. With a to-do list as busy as this, I think I better start resting up now. 37

Located at the northern tip of the island, Haig Point offers its members and residents both a tight-knit community to connect with and a place to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the mainland. In a world where privacy and security are a high priority, an island without a bridge fills a unique niche. One of the many charms of Haig Point is that it is accessible only by a scenic, 30-minute ferry ride from Hilton Head or a 5-minute water taxi from Harbour Town. Haig Point’s private ferry fleet runs eighteen round trips a day from their embarkation center and 24-hour service via water taxi. The private, member-owned community is graced by a unique Rees Jones-designed course with 20 holes and two different routings. Like everything else at Haig Point, including the community’s 1,100 acres of astounding natural beauty, it’s something special. This is an island where you might live apart from the world, but you’ll never run out of things to do. Children’s Charities makes a difference in the community
Amanda White and Lauren Holmes had a strong desire to give back to their community. Together, they founded Children’s Charities, Inc., based in Milton, Georgia. The nonproďŹ t foundation helps fund programs that beneďŹ t children with special needs in North Fulton, South Forsyth, Cherokee, Dawson and Pickens Counties. Since 2012, Children’s Charities has raised and donated more than half-a-million dollars. As an organization 100 percent driven by volunteers, all proceeds raised go toward the purchase of items such as emergency transport vehicles, eye tracking devices for the early detection of Autism, cell phone charging stations and state-of-the-art vein viewers for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta locations around the state. Children’s Charities has also developed and fully funded an equine summer camp for children with Autism, provided Thanksgiving dinners to families in need, sponsored lunches for the mentoring program at Independence High School and sponsored Cure Childhood Cancer.
AMANDA WHITE (LEFT) & LAUREN HOLMES (RIGHT)
This year Children’s Charities will be hosting its largest capital drive campaign, the Clarity Farm Showcase Home & Tour, co-chaired by Amanda White and Megan Jamison. The goal is to raise $500,000 in order to fully fund the design, equipment and installation of an all-inclusive play park in the City of Milton. The new park will be the ďŹ rst of its scale in North Fulton County, encompassing close to an acre of city property. The park will provide a fun experience for children with all abilities and disabilities.

MEET THE DESIGNER PACITA WILSON
PACITA WILSON is recognized as one of the premier interior decorators in the Southeast. She was honored to handle the interior design for Children’s Charities’ Designing for a Diff erence Clarity Farm Showcase Home. Her storefront, Pineapple Park, opened seven years ago in downtown Woodstock, Georgia. All proceeds of the Showcase Home, held April 19–23, will benefi t Children’s Charities’ eff ort to build an all-inclusive play park project in Milton. “When somebody walks into Pineapple Park, I want them to experience the warmth and comfort of home,” says Wilson. “For the Showcase Home, I utilized a layering method, which allowed me to incorporate personal touches into the design that directly refl ects the family.” Children’s Charities’ founder Amanda White is eager to see the fi nal product at the Clarity Farm Showcase Home. “Children’s Charities is very fortunate to have someone of Pacita’s caliber to oversee the interior decoration for this fabulous home,” said White. “At more than 10,000 square feet of living space and 5,000 square feet of outdoor living space, this is truly a oneof-a-kind home. We encourage everyone to visit for inspiration, to purchase the decorations or to simply help fund an all-inclusive playground for the community.” The home was built by Jason Cole of Cole Construction, and Tim Bryan of Bryan Residential Planning served as the architect. Both fi rms are local. “The Clarity Farm Showcase Home spotlights the entire Milton region,” said Wilson. “We have utilized a local architect and builder, as well as area boutique establishments to provide items to include in the design. I would also like to thank my entire staff and family, as we’ve been working on this home for more than 18 months.”

MEET THE ARCHITECT & BUILDER ARCHITECT TIM BRYAN & BUILDER JASON COLE
The Clarity Farm Showcase Home began as a collaboration between architect TIM BRYAN, builder JASON COLE and the homeowners. The big idea was to demolish the existing home and replace it within 12 months —which was no small feat for a house of its size.
“Tim’s desire for designing houses started at the age of 7, so it’s easy to see the passion in each of his projects,” says Children’s Charities’ Founder Amanda White. “We sought a creative mind, who would drive the vision for this home, and Tim has exceeded our expectations.”
Bryan, who resides in the Milton area, received a call from the homeowners to create a one-of-a-kind, single level residence built in the center of rolling horse country.
Builder Jason Cole was tasked with demolition and construction of the showhouse. “The views are incredible and are what set this home apart,” says Cole. “The architect did a phenomenal job of creating wall-to-wall panoramic views of North Fulton’s very best horse farms, which makes this home a special place worth coming to see.”
“Designing a home of this caliber in my own community is an exciting opportunity,” says Bryan. “This sprawling showhome is designed to focus on the front of the property displaying edge to edge porches and French doors that highlight the tremendous view.” Bryan’s creativity and experience, along with a lifelong inspiration for planning homes, made Bryan Residential Planning the perfect choice to design Children Charities’ Showcase Home.
According to Cole, other must-see items in the home include the utilization of 100-year-old hand hewn trusses, exposed rafter beams throughout the home and Pecky Cyprus paneling in the master bedroom ceiling and study. “I have been so impressed with the work of Children’s Charities.” said Cole. “My wife, Lauren, is now volunteering with the organization as well.”

CLARITY FARM
THE MODERN FARMHOUSE
With more than 10,000 square feet of indoor living space and 5,000 square feet of outdoor living space, the Clarity Farm Showcase Home was designed to truly be lived in and enjoyed by a large family. From April 19–23, the public is invited to tour the Children’s Charities Designing for a Diff erence Clarity Farm Showcase Home in Milton. The entire home is furnished by interior designer Pacita Wilson from Pineapple Park. Architect Tim Bryan and builder Jason Cole have also provided signifi cant leadership throughout this process. Many of the items featured throughout the house are available for purchase, and local boutique shops—including Henry & Pearl, Andrea Costa, Britt Bass, Church Street Cottage, Blue Hazel Love Jewelry, Margaret Nichols Custom Window Treatments & Pillows—will be onsite to raise additional funds for the charity. The home’s fl oorplan off ers open space for family entertaining while showcasing all the wood beams and fl oors that create cozy and inviting spaces. The welcome hall showcases plenty of natural light, a stunning steel-front door and large windows layered with Thibaut textiles and linen fabrics. Beyond the welcome hall, the dining room

has additional custom steel windows and doors that lead to the outside. The dining room also features art created for the homeowner and a dining table that adds a wonderful texture alongside the fi replace. Unique light fi xtures make a statement in each room throughout the home, and several items will be available to purchase during the event at a discount, with proceeds going towards Children’s Charities’ eff orts to build one of the state’s most inclusive play parks. The exterior living areas off er incredible views across the home’s 40 acres. There are two outdoor fi replaces, as well as a fi re pit, that are sure to be enjoyed. Just off the master suite is a secondary outdoor master suite with a custom king-sized swing bed. The space is layered in textiles and includes a cozy sleeping porch and seating area. Wilson selected timeless fabrics and colors throughout the home for the interior and exterior. She also incorporated items from all over the world, including vintage shutters, baskets from France and vintage equestrian riding hats. The Clarity Farm Showcase Home has teamed up with Thibaut on several textured wallpaper coverings for the guest rooms

and powder baths. Texture has been added throughout the home in the form of white oak fl oors and 200-year-old beams. The library and master suite have pecky cypress inlaid with a special painting technique. Soothing, neutral hues fl ow throughout the home, and poplar is used in wood casings and baseboard. The kitchen boasts stunning beams and a focal wall swathed in one-of-a kind tile. Rather than upper cabinets, custom iron shelving with a unique brass detail creates an open feel while showing off the beauty of the space. The butler’s pantry is also a must-see, with beautiful cabinetry that displays the homeowner’s collection of pottery, showcas-
ing pieces and china collected during travels. Be sure to take a moment to marvel over the pewter countertops. Open shelving houses timeless stemware and collected pieces. This home showcases layers of texture throughout in the form of stone, wood, marble and steel—not to mention the sprawling acreage visible from every room. The fl ow of the home is designed to accommodate wide, open spaces. Each room is fi lled with striking architectural elements and unique decor from across the globe. Hints of equestrian elements throughout the home serve as an extension of the property’s three barns—one of which was remodeled into a guest barn/studio.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAY PARK TO BENEFIT CHILDREN OF NORTH FULTON
A new all-inclusive play park is in the works in the City of Milton thanks to the eff orts of a locally-based charitable organi ation, Children’s Charities. The non profi t’s co-founders Amanda White and Lauren Holmes’ latest undertaking is the Children’s Charities Designing for a Diff erence Clarity Farm Showcase Home & Tour, held in Milton from April 19–23. “Children’s Charities is so excited about being able to donate this incredible new play area to the City of Milton,” said Holmes. “Once completed, it will become one of the largest play areas for children with and without disabilities in the state.” All proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and the purchase of commemorative bricks will benefi t the play park project, whichwill provide a safe area for all children. “With more than 65 percent of the play equipment in the park being handicap-accessible, this will be one of the most inclusive parks in the state of Georgia.” said White. The park will off er amenities such as a zip line, a variety of swings, roller slides, musical instruments, sensory centers, a eacup whirl, climb-on and climb-in structures, and ramping throughout the main structure. Additionally, rubber fl ooring will be poured throughout the playground for easy access. The two play areas will be geared for children ages 2-5 and 5-12. In addition to visiting the showhome, one of the many ways to support the park is through the purchase of a commemorative brick that will be permanently displayed in the park. A 4x8 brick paver with three lines of text is available for $50, and a larger 8x8 brick paver with up to fi ve lines of text is available for $100. These may be ordered at ChildrensCharitiesGA.org.

CALL IT SERENDIPITY. When Clarke and Meghan Magruder first spied this sprawling property in the heart of Buckhead, they put in an offer on the spot—no matter that the couple was within inches of embarking upon a renovation of their current home. Shortly thereafter, Clarke, who earned his master’s degree in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology, set his sights on local firm Spitzmiller & Norris to reclaim the circa-1927 jewel box, while Meghan had compiled magazine tear sheets through the years that all pointed back to the work of one designer who just so hap-

pened to be based in Atlanta—the inimitable Suzanne Kasler. After securing their design dream team, which extended to include builder Jerry Bonner and landscape architect Graham Pittman, the Magruders moved forward with what would ultimately become a massive, three-year project that would strip the main house down to the studs; increase the footprint with a three-car garage, breezeway, billiard room and loggia; and clear the sloping, overgrown forest of a backyard in favor of a pool, pool house, tennis court, bocce lawn, garden, vegetable garden, fire pit and “barn.” 85

In the living room, an Oushak from Moattar anchors the space, while Porta Romana’s wall sconces and Giacometti stool, and a matte gold fire screen, add subtle glamour.
In short: the aging, overgrown two-acre property was transformed from beast to beauty, giving this Renaissance couple, who are consummate entertainers, resort-like amenities within arm’s reach. “What’s interesting about the Magruders is that both of them have a real passion for not only design but detail,” Kasler says. “They found a house that had a history they could really embrace … and it became a passion for them.” And ultimately, says the designer, that architectural sensitivity helped preserve the fabric of
the neighborhood, an important consideration since the residence was one of the original houses on the street. From an architectural standpoint, Rick Spitzmiller reimagined the original Adam-style house, enhancing its unusual one-andthree-quarters framing and altering the entry sequence to where guests would be invited in through a formal entrance on the side—not unlike a Charleston single house, he says. And, while Spitzmiller admits that the interior architecture of the original 89

house was “plain-Jane,” Meghan points to examples of unearthing gems like cobblestones—many of which have been given new life at the base of the new drive—mined from beneath an asphalt driveway as evidence that “in an old house every now and then you get this treasure; you find something that’s really great.” Remaining sensitive to the historic home’s architectural envelope also proved visually demanding, says Kasler, as most of the first floor spaces open up to each other. “The challenge was: How do you
94
have a house sequence through and each room still have its own sensibility?” she asks. Kasler’s secret, of course, lies in her innate ability to allow a home’s color story to strategically unfold. Like beautiful choreography, the visual sequence she’s created allows threads of color to resonate from room to room. The icy blue from the side entry foyer, for instance, makes an appearance in the form of glass accessories in the cream and champagne living room. Even the lacquered navy billiard room, which Kasler admits could have been “quite strong” peeking in from the natural linen family room, draws you in. “I think it’s remarkable that we were able to bring in so much color in a house that’s very neutral. There’s a strategic way of how to use color without it being so jarring,” says Kasler, and it’s clear that with this project, she accomplished just that—but in a way makes the storied architecture look fresh, youthful and edited. The Magruders agree: “People really react to and love the way she worked with color in this house,” says Meghan. “Suzanne and Rick both are great artists, and their eye for detail made such a difference.” See Resources, Back of Book. 97

“SPACE IS EVERYTHING IN A SMALL condo,” says Jacksonville, Florida–based interior designer Andrew Howard. “You have to choose each piece very purposely, and in this case, I didn’t want anything to compete with the views.” With that in mind, Howard flowed layers of blue throughout the rooms with well-edited choices at every turn for Meredith Leapley’s high-rise Atlanta piedà-terre. Comfort is an essential ingredient in the design as well. “Meredith uses this condo when she’s here on business, so I wanted everything to be soft and relaxing when she gets home from the workday,” says Howard, who used faux-fur throws, generously proportioned upholstery and roomy dining room chairs covered in a practical outdoor fabric to achieve that effect. “In a small 103

space, people often work at their dining room table, so you need to feel comfortable being there with your laptop.” Other practical ideas lurk among the pretty. The petite foyer includes a scallop-edged white console table with a basket to tuck away dog leashes and a bowl for keys and mail. “You really have to think about how your client lives in
the space, not what the decorator wants. It has to be functional,” notes Howard. Of course, in this condo, practical is never dull. The foyer also shows off a striking wallpaper in shades of green, gray and light blue that resembles wispy feathers making an engaging first impression. What the condo lacks in size, it makes up for with custom details that bring a bit of drama to 105

the space. A couple of those enliven the master bedroom in particular. The ceiling, covered in a hand-painted wallpaper, gives off the effect of mosaic tiles, drawing the eye up. “The pop-up tray ceiling was a builder-model-type treatment,” says Howard, “but instead of trying to disguise it, we made it more impactful. The feminine, curvy upholstered headboard, embroidered with circles evocative of the rising sun, is another striking feature. “The design went through many evolutions, and a lot of hands went into making this piece,” says Howard, “so there is a story behind it, which gives it another dimension.” The pink side of the Atlanta skyline represents a sophisticated, insouciant attitude in the room, as Howard explains: “Pink can be a lot more transitional than you think. It doesn’t have to feel like a 7-year-old girl’s room. The color should not be off-limits, especially in a bedroom.” And it all circles back to the jumping-off point for the design. After all, who wants to compete with blue skies and pink sunsets? See Resources, Back of Book. 107

When designer Kay Douglass and her husband, Jim, purchased a classic Charleston Single House in January 2016, the designer knew she wanted to give it a modern Parisian flair, and the dining room is perhaps the best example of this aesthetic. “I love the reflection of the chandelier in the mottled-glass mirror over the fireplace,” Kay says. “It’s magical day and night.”

FOR 13 YEARS, South of Market proprietress Kay Douglass has operated a second outpost of her high-end Atlanta boutique in the Holy City, so it seems fitting that she and husband Jim would purchase a Charleston Single House located, well, south of Market. The four-story, circa 1840 row house—the sort that’s one room wide and two or more rooms deep, with a central staircase—is situated on lower King, scarcely a stone’s throw from Battery Park. “What I love most is how convenient it is,” Kay says. “We can walk to anything we want, which, after always needing a car in Atlanta, is amazing.” Renovated in the 1980s, the four-bedroom residence left much to be desired, but that didn’t deter Kay, who could plainly see its potential beyond all the blemishes. It was “very dark, very brown, very traditional,” she recalls. “So it was a challenge to determine which features to bring up to modern day because we wanted to retain as many of the architectural details as we could.” Kay, who travels to France frequently for work, was inspired by her stays in Parisian apartments and found ample opportunities to inject those influences into her family’s fresh pied-à-terre. The first order of business? To wash everything in white. Kay chose Benjamin Moore’s Winter White for its unique countenance. “We wanted something with a really pale gray undertone to it but still bright,” she says. “The floors, for that matter, were a robust, old-fashioned brown. “I do a lot of washes on floors, so I tried many different grays to get one that would cover up the reddish tones, giving the house a European essence.” During six months of rehab, the kitchen received the greatest
overhaul. The Douglasses added copious cabinetry to the sleek cooking space and even converted a tiny porch into a spot for the refrigerator. Meanwhile, the adjoining dining room skews French Moderne thanks to a Saarinen tulip table and a curious contemporary chandelier. To give the space a dual purpose, Kay installed two chaises—positioned in opposite corners of the room—which the family loves for lounging with coffee and the morning paper. “One of my favorite things is sitting in the living room and watching the horse-drawn carriages go by,” Kay says of the space just across the main-floor stair hall. “And I love the globe lights more than anything; I bought them in Paris and have always wanted to use them for myself.” One floor up, the master bedroom received a matching pendant, imbuing the minimalist, light-filled space with personality and panache. “Only one wall would fit a king-size bed, so rather than run a low headboard underneath the windows, I decided to accent with that eye-catching velvet panel,” she says. Featuring evergreen settees from South of Market’s own line of upholstery, the “drawing room” on the opposite side of the secondfloor stair hall is ideal for leisurely days when the Douglasses do not feel like leaving their nest to venture downstairs. But once they do, daily life around the peninsula is pretty much a breeze. “We can walk right out the door to dinner, lunch, coffee, a run on the Battery,” Kay says. And even on a rainy day, the family can always find sunshine inside. “It’s just a happy house,” she says. “When we’re here, we’re happy.” See Resources, Back of Book. 111

Articulated Apparatus sconces and South of Market’s own upholstery bring modern glamour to the drawing room. The channeled armchair is from B.D. 113

Kay took measures to preserve as many original architectural features as possible, as seen in the detailing of the living room wall and fireplace mantel. “It kind of feels like a magic house,” says the designer, who enjoys relaxing in this room while catching the occasional glimpse of passersby.

above The master bedroom reflects Kay’s efforts to keep everything as light and airy as possible. Even a low headboard would have blocked the windows to King Street, so she devised the blue-andgreen velvet panel, which adds a wow factor while anchoring the king-size sleeping spot. left “It took quite a while to lay out the kitchen because it was such a small space,” says Kay, who worked with Tupper Construction to wrap the room almost entirely in cabinets. To add light without disturbing the ceiling beams, the team installed flushmount fixtures on the wall in the upper parts of the cabinets. The backsplash tiles are the same gray-veined Carrara marble used for the countertops.

AMONG POSH MOUNTAIN RESORTS and wellness destinations, Gstaad stands out for its classic chalet architecture, elegant promenade shopping and gentle ski pistes. Nestled in a corner of southwest Switzerland known as Saanenland, the alpine village sparkles in winter with the warm glow of holiday cheer, while summer beckons for hiking, leisure and outdoor pursuits. Despite attracting a celebrity and jet-set crowd, Gstaad’s key players nurture the village’s understated style and authentic mountain culture, proudly claiming to have as many cows as people. Nonetheless, a bon vivant vibe persists, and five five-star hotels grace the landscape. Newest among the upscale retreats, The Alpina Gstaad sits on a coveted perch overlooking bucolic pastures and valleys framed by snowcapped peaks. The luxury hotel, opened in 2012, was the 120

first to be built in the village in 100 years, ushering in a fresh approach to alpine chic. Award-winning interior design by globally acclaimed Hirsch Bedner Associates features airy, uncluttered spaces fitted with reclaimed timber from old barns and chalets. Mountain quartz is fashioned into contemporary accessory pieces, and original farmhouse antiques are repurposed as minibars and consoles. The 56 guest rooms and suites highlight local tradition with artisan woodwork, paper-cutting craft (scherenschnitte) and sleek pendant lights resembling the classic Swiss cowbell. Inspired book collections and fur throws give a homey feel, and throughout the hotel, the ambient warmth of wood envelops a harmony of textures and soothing tones. From the Cuban-style cigar lounge and Michelin-starred dining to a private cinema and remarkable art collection, The Alpina aims to kindle the sensory experience. Chief among the amenities is Six Senses Spa, a holistic destination spa inspired by Asian wellness traditions and the energy of the Alps. All senses are heightened as guests relax with therapeutic spa treatments in atmospheric spaces that emulate the alpine setting—curved walls of timber and stone, cascading waterfalls and cocoonlike nooks, including a Himalayan salt room. Glacier peaks provide the backdrop for movement classes in a dreamy outdoor pavilion, and Six Senses’ renowned therapists offer innovative programs including yogic sleep, Tibetan healing and silence retreats. The newest offering, integrated wellness, provides an assessment of one’s physiological biomarkers and a personalized plan for improving health and vitality. Gstaad’s village motto, “come up, slow down,” is a recurring theme, and The Alpina sets the stage with inventive design for contemporary comfort and a holistic approach to the well-being of guests, exemplifying the best in Swiss soigné style.

CHILENO BAY RESORT Luxury goes barefoot at Cabo’s newest Auberge property WRITTEN BY Brian
McCallen
THE SIREN CALL OF LOS CABOS, the magical desert-meets-ocean enclave at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, has segued to a subtle drumbeat with the recent debut of Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, a fine example of “deformalized luxury” courtesy of the Auberge Resorts Collection. The setting dictates the theme. The low-rise property occupies the site of the 1961 Hotel Cabo San Lucas, a legendary hideaway patronized by Hollywood moguls and film stars such as John Wayne. Thundering surf prevails in Los Cabos, but Chileno Bay fronts a broad crescent of sand that indents the coastline, protecting its cove and marine life from strong currents and big waves. Closer to shore, reefs and shelves of rock create tranquil waters ideal for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding. As conceived by Auberge, the coveted beachfront inspired a chilled-out retreat where families, 122

friends and active couples can enjoy a relaxed, free-spirited, shoes-optional holiday. This understated newcomer is the yang to the yin of Esperanza, a nearby Auberge resort that qualifies as a study in tropical elegance. Chileno Bay is beachside chic: clean lines, native landscaping, natural wood accents, curving hand-cut stone walls. The resort’s focal point, a 450-foot-long, three-tiered swimming pool inlaid with iridescent deep-blue tiles, looks like a river flowing to the sea. The signature restaurant, COMAL, headed by an alum of The French Laundry, serves contemporary Latin American cuisine, though the whimsical beachside TnT, with its high-top tables and bleached white palo de arco (woven stick roof that filters sunlight), vies for the title of Cabo’s best taco and tequila bar. It’s also a great spot to watch for whales during the winter months. Accommodations at the 92-key resort (60 hotel rooms and 32 three- and four-bedroom villas) take their cue from the natural environment, with a toned-down color palette of tawny desert, succulent plants and shades of blue. Bathrooms have indoor and outdoor showers, a soaking tub, Mexican tiles and smooth plaster walls. Among the highlights at the Auberge Spa are a salt inhalation room embowered by exterior walls of flowering plants and an outdoor reflexology pool where guests trod stones on the floor of the pool to derive benefits. Stylish, low-key and oriented to the outdoors, Chileno Bay Resort & Residences delivers luxury in a different and, for a destination synonymous with fun in the sun, very welcome way. (844) 207-

At Casa Palopó’s restaurant, 6.8 Palopó, helmed by chef Mario André Miralles, enjoy your meals indoors or soak in the scenery while dining on the hotel’s airy veranda. And Miralles’ locally sourced cuisine is as splendid as its setting; dinner includes expertly executed meat and fish dishes and of-the-moment innovations—such as a tomato poached in rum in honey—that turn ordinary ingredients into extraordinary dishes. Breakfast includes fresh, local fruit topped with chia seeds and honey, as well as traditional Guatemalan cuisine, such as fried eggs, tortillas and plantains. Those looking for additional relaxation can indulge in an assortment of in-room spa services, such as facials and full-body massages with L’Occitane products. Afterward, take a dip in the pool, or soak in the views from one of the hotel’s many vantage points with a glass of wine and a local cheese plate. For an up-close look at the lake and local culture, embark on a guided kayak or boat tour to neighboring villages, such as Santiago Atitlán, San Juan, San Pedro la Laguna and Santa Catarina Palopó, where you’ll find traditional Guatemalan markets and an array of talented local artisans. Deemed the “land of eternal spring,” Guatemala’s landscape is also ideal for walking tours or a hike up one of the nearby volcanoes, and Casa Palopó’s friendly staff members are more than happy to help plan your route. Surrounded by such intimate accommodations and exquisite artistry—in both natural and curated surroundings—it’s difficult to say goodbye to Casa Palopó. But, true to its warmhearted charm, the hotel will always welcome you back.

Westward, Whoa!

HOWHOUSES, STEEPLECHASES, graduations and weddings are the hallmarks of Southern springs. Derby Day hats resemble blossoming container gardens, and entire landscapes are stripped bare to fill wedding vases. Such is the affinity for flowers in Atlanta. Atlantans spend an extraordinary amount of time and money on outdoor living, despite summer humidity too thick to swat with a cricket bat. Homes offer a plethora of lush spaces in which to entertain, dine and lounge. Annuals, perennials, topiaries and container gardens add pops of color to the vast lawns framed by towering trees. If we’re going to sweat cloaked in humidity, we’re going to do so amid beauty. Across the country, Los Angeles transitions from spring to summer in a markedly less pretty way. We pay to park at the Santa Monica beach and search for a spot of sand among the hordes that blanket the SoCal beaches from Malibu to Manhattan. The roller coaster roars while scantily clad bikinis and tatted surfer shorts blade on The Strand. For the fortunate few who have a yard in Los Angeles, backyard decorating is limited to a pool that stretches from
136
lot line to lot line. Lawns require a gardener, and that creates mess and noise, so it’s better to glue down Astroturf and let the bright bikinis steal the show. Because of the narrow lots that permit only single room– wide houses, the houses in Los Angeles beach cities don’t have yards. Rooftop decks overlook other rooftop decks, while a tiny speck of blue ocean can occasionally be spotted. Sometimes dry gardens exist, but cacti can pierce, so many forgo foliage unless it’s fake. Cacti, fake foliage, Astroturf and cement rooftop decks are a depressing substitute for the gracious grounds of Atlanta homes. Clearly Angelenos missed the chapter on landscaping when tract home developers produced entire cities of cookie-cutter neighborhoods. However, as draining as it is to live without beautiful landscaping, one of nature’s most magnificent gifts frames Los Angeles. The mighty Pacific roars and pounds the Southern California shore, providing a kaleidoscope of brilliant colors at sunset. Considering I live at the beach and watch that show every night, I’ll have to call it a draw.
