destination design

For a property overlooking the North Carolina mountains and a lake, COURTNEY GILES adds simple sophistication.

SENSE OF PLACE, PRIDE OF PLACE. House-loving Atlantans, architects and interior designers alike often use these phrases to put a finger on the feeling, or emotion, that a particular residence evokes. This is no easy task—“leave it to the professionals” is my resounding design advice, when asked—but inevitably, the projects we feature each month in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles have this placemaking perspective in common. Our May issue is no exception; this month, we are pleased to share three residences, each of which are fresh but functional, edited but elegant, and, above all, warm and welcoming, whether it’s for a visit from two or a crowd. These homes—spanning from Alabama and North Carolina to right here in Georgia—are far from formal, yet the inviting contemporary verve is visible.

DIGITAL EDITION Find AH&L on your tablet! Download recent issues on iTunes, Google Play or through the Zinio app.

It’s ironic that destination homes must work a little bit harder than our primary residences to cater to the best-of-both-worlds mentality, but isn’t that the definition of hospitable design? In a Susan Ferrier– and David Baker–designed lake house (page 60), a series sun, and foster a sense of privacy for homeowners and their guests. Courtney Giles’ casual-cool spin on a North Carolina mountain retreat (page 78) minimizes rusticity and maximizes comfort for visitors of all ages. Matthew Quinn and Ric Parrish’s Georgia getaway (page 92) keeps warmth and well-being top of mind, from a pair of identical guest-house suites to an outdoor tub for “forest bathing.” Design that works for you is the ultimate indulgence! MR. BROWN From a career in fashion to a vocation designing refined and sophisticated homes, ROBERT BROWN cuts a swath of tailored elegance locally and beyond Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

Good taste was instilled in Robert Brown from childhood. Born in Griffin, Georgia, and raised in Dawson, Georgia, Brown was surrounded by gracious homes filled with beautiful pieces. “My father was an avid antiques collector, so I spent weekends accompanying him on buying trips, and that helped me develop an appreciation for good forms and rich patinas,” says Brown.

FASHION ERA While a student at the University of Georgia, Brown worked for Hart Schaffner & Marx in Athens. The company was renowned for quality men’s suits made with exceptional fabrics and tailored to perfection. Brown’s innate skills combined with his astute eye made him a perfect candidate to advance in the company, and he remained with the 12

brand after graduating from college. Brown declined a transfer to Chicago citing that “cold winters were too much for a born and bred Southerner.” He then became an executive with a private-label fashion firm, The Hartwell Company, where he helped transform the business into a leader in fashion.

TRANSITION TO INTERIORS Although Brown planned to be in fashion for the duration of his career, a personal tragedy led him reconsider his life path. He had always loved design, and appreciated the principles of scale, proportion and balance. Having cultivated a refined eye for elegant fabrics, quality craftsmanship and beautiful details, Brown took the leap to pursue his love of interiors while applying the skills he’d acquired over two decades in fashion.

INTERIORS For two decades, Robert Brown Interior Design has been a leader in the design industry. Brown has twice been awarded the Southeastern Designer of the Year and accumulated multiple ASID awards, including the distinguished President’s Award. He is the Honorary Chair of the 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens—an event he’s participated in many times. Having remained a collector and buyer at heart, Brown established Townhouse in 2013. The Galleries of Peachtree Hills boutique carries interesting objects and bespoke furniture, and inventory can be sourced in-store or on 1stdibs.

THE HORIZON Brown continues to expand his boundaries both geographically and aesthetically. “I’m thrilled to be designing homes in Buckhead while concurrently considering projects in the U.K. and Middle East—they’re all incredibly different in scope, yet each is rooted in classic design with quality finishes, fabrics and furnishings,” says Brown. Spoken like the true connoisseur of well-tailored design that Brown is—regardless of project location, size or breadth.

ARCHITECTURE RENOVATION UNDER 5,000 SQ. FT.

Spitzmiller & Norris, Inc. For this circa-1927 abode, Spitzmiller & Norris—with Bonner Custom Homes, E. Graham Pittman and Suzanne Kasler—underwent a three-year project that would strip the main house down to the studs; increase the footprint with a three-car garage, breezeway, billiard room and loggia; and clear the sloping yard to add a pool, pool house, tennis court, bocce lawn, and more. The new plan enforces the idea that great houses are a series of spaces that work as a suite of rooms, said a judge.

For a Roman Catholic Diocese in Knoxville, Tennessee, a new cathedral was commissioned that would represent and teach the Catholic faith through the beauty and richness of the classical language of architecture and ornament. The resulting Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a blend of local architectural traditions with distinctly classical Catholic symbolism and iconography.

ARCHITECTURE SINGLE FAMILY OVER 5,000 SQ. FT.

D. Stanley Dixon, Architect For a house in Highlands, North Carolina, this Atlanta-based architect imagined a mountainside retreat inspired by early American stone houses. Its stone construction is appropriate to the region, and both exterior detailing and interior finishes establish a hierarchy in the function and formality of the rooms. Public entertaining spaces feature intricate millwork alongside exposed, rough-hewn beam ceilings. This refined project exhibits “good scale, good proportions and good manners,” remarked a judge.

From coastal birds in flight and tranquil vistas of the past to botanical landscapes and cycloramic views of the harbor, Biskin’s meticulous process of painting on seamless portrait linen represents a “very high level of artistry,” remarked one judge; it’s an example of “beautiful execution of landscape and natural history murals.” 19

For a Kiawah Island project—set on six acres, nestled back from the dunes and featuring panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean— Tammy Connor Interior Design, along with Glenn Keyes Architects, created a new, 7,500-square-foot house that balances tradition and formality with easy but active indooroutdoor living. The collected, subtly layered interior evokes the breeziness of coast through traditional materials, classic proportion and soft, colorful patterns and finishes.

Brandon Ingram—balanced the verdant setting with timeless architectural and interior details. Employing a soft palette, Gilbreath fostered a series of relaxing, daylight-filled spaces with curated antiques, tailored upholstery and showstopping artwork. RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE – ESTATE

Howard Design Studio For a 3.5-acre setting surrounding a newly built Norman D. Askins-designed residence in Atlanta, John Howard of Howard Design Studio provided master planning for the site, landscape architecture, lighting design and garden planting design. The stately, graceful and elegant estate was inspired by gardens the clients had admired in the Virginia countryside. A judge applauded this project for its “elegant treatment of landscape in keeping with the established character of the architecture.” 22

Howard Design Studio Following a major addition to a circa-1921 residence originally designed by Hentz, Reid & Adler, this landscape architecture firm created a new formal garden through the use of retaining walls to level the property. A split-stair with koi pond was added to connect the house and formal garden, while a cascading stair with herb pockets connects to a lower garden room. The project is “a beautifully designed, detailed and manifested landscape with all the freshness of a classic,” remarked a judge.

RESTORATION Jill Biskin Fine Arts For an Atlanta parlor that is considered “the finest example of the Italian Baroque in the Western hemisphere” thanks in part to its 18th-century European hunt scenes that cover the walls, this Athens, Georgia, artist was commissioned to fill a void that was created when new homeowners removed a large cabinet that one of the original architects, Philip T. Shutze, had designed for the space. Matching the original palette and linen, Biskin’s meticulous composition makes it impossible to decipher between old and new.

STUDENT/ EMERGING PROFESSIONAL

Upon observing that city of Coral Gables, which is approaching its 100-year anniversary, lacked a University Club, student/emerging professional Reinaldo M. Hernandez envisioned designing a building for the city that would encapsulate its trajectory as a regional center for art, architecture and educational excellence. Employing Spanish architecture with regional materials and craft in his renderings, Hernandez says it would inspire through “architecture, art and landscape.”

MOROCCAN

Bright colors, bold patterns and highly decorative elements are the result of one of the world’s greatest intersections Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

ORIGINS Both the landscape and the geographical location of Morocco have made it one of the most unique places in the world. Resting on the northwest tip of Africa beneath Spain and Portugal, and bordered by both the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans, Morocco has always been a global port city and gateway between Europe and Africa. It has been inhabited since the Lower Paleolithic period, but the Phoenicians became the first highly cultured society in the area.

Because of the significant strategic geographical location of Morocco, it has been a place filled with political upheaval and turmoil for millennia. From the Roman occupation, to the Muslim conquest, to the many dynasties, to attempts by the French and Spanish to control the area, Morocco has a rich and varied history. With each successive occupation and dynasty, and with the constant trade and travel through the

CHARACTERISTICS & CONSTRUCTION Influences from every culture in the world are evidenced in Moroccan design and architecture, and much of it is dramatic. Moorish architecture began in the eighth century and continues to be a prevalent style with sweeping arches and beautiful courtyards. Bold geometric prints in vibrant colors mixed with gold and silver are African influences that permeate all aspects of Moroccan style, particularly textiles. Intricate wood designs and mother-of-pearl inlay are frequently found in furniture, while tile mosaics, mirrors, canopies and pendant lights are decorative elements that captivate and pull the eye into the room. Incense and diffusers are part of the essence of a space since design in Morocco is as much about the experience as it is the visual perception. Because of the international trade in the area for thousands of years, Moroccan style is really a conglomeration of many cultures rather than specific elements of one.

MASS MARKET From expensive custom options to very affordable pieces—and with many items still manufactured in parts of Africa—textiles, furniture and decorative accessories abound. Whether a room is infused with all aspects of Moroccan style or whether it only exhibits one element of the aesthetic, the space is imbued with international flair and a bit of mystery and drama.

WHETHER YOU’VE ALREADY made a trip to Cashiers-Highlands, North Carolina, this year or have a getaway planned, local real estate authority Beth Townsend offers this update: It’s in a “transition zone” from a buyers’ market to a sellers’ market. The number of homes priced $3 million and up has dropped from 23 last year to 15, as of first quarter 2019. For the $3 million-plus properties that sold in 2018, the average days on the market was a whopping 608. The majority of those sales were estates with acreage, multiple buildings and lakes or ponds located outside country clubs or subdivisions, says Townsend, vice president and co-founder of McKee Properties. Overall, fewer homes are for sale in Jackson,

Macon and Transylvania counties. Two price ranges with more homes on the market, compared to the same time last year, are $750,000–$1 million and $1.5 million–$2 million. But buyers are faced with a choice: a dated $1.5 million house on the best lots or new construction on a less premier lot. “The renovation market is picking up, and it is competing heavily with new custom construction,” she says. With fewer homes for sale, Townsend expects the market for lots and land to pick up. In 2018, 235 lots/land parcels sold, compared to 221 the prior year. Lots from $25,000–$50,000 and $100,000– $150,000 have the most inventory. “It’s growing,” she says. “It’s going to be interesting to look back 10 years from now and see how different it looks.”

FROM NEW RESIDENCES to farm-to-table fêtes, The Cliffs in the western Carolinas is expanding its offerings for mountain vacation living. The Golf Ridge Cottages at The Cliffs at Mountain Park—one of its seven private lake club and mountain communities—start in the $900,000s with 2,300- to 3,000-square-foot plans by Arthur Rutenberg Homes. Several “premier-view estate homesites” are priced from $350,000–$895,000 in Southridge at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. As of early 2019, 1,716 homes were completed with 139 under construction. Last year, The Cliffs closed about $171 million in home resales and developer sales, representing 271 transactions Eighteen homesites are also available near its Creekside Farm at Walnut Cove, a 45-acre organic farm that provides produce for its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and hosts classes and farm-to-table dinners. 44

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham CONSIDERING I’M A GAL WHO LOVES CHINTZ, porcelain fruits and vegetables, and dog paintings, some might assume that I have no appreciation for modern decor. They would be mistaken. Although the kinds of furnishings I gravitate to might send most modernists running for the hills, my tastes are not so rigid that I can’t appreciate a sleek, streamlined interior. In fact, after a decade of growing weary with the so-called “eclectic” style of decorating, which is often executed with an excess of decorations, I think it’s about time for us to take a breather by paring down our interiors. What I mean to say is, it’s time for us to relearn the art of editing and the merits of decorating in the restrained, modern fashion. Whenever I start to feel dizzied by an abundance of pattern or cloyed by my plethora of ceramic flora, I turn to the man who, thanks to his immense talent, achieved pitch-perfect rooms using just the right amount of carefully chosen, modern-leaning furnishings: Billy Baldwin, a decorator with an aversion to unnecessary stuff. Although I’m sure that many archmodernists would disagree with me, I believe that there is nothing more modern, and at the same time more classic, than white cotton upholstery and slipcovers, rattanwrapped Parsons tables, and clean-lined slipper chairs, all of which were hallmarks of Baldwin’s work. Introduce these pieces to a room, leave out anything trendy or decoratively extraneous, and you’ll have a room that will stand the test of time. Someone else who was a master editor was the French design legend Jean-Michel Frank, whose stylishly simple tables he created in the 1920s and ’30s I’m particularly drawn to. Because his tables were so straightforward and yet so inherently elegant (they were often finished in such luxurious materials as shagreen or Hermès leather), they required very little in the way of added decoration. And that’s the crux of it: A well-designed room or piece of furniture requires little in the way of irrelevant embellishment, which, if you ask me, is the very essence of successful decorating. 47

FRENCH CONNECTION

Adjoining concepts AIX and Tin Tin are an ode to chef Nick Leahy’s memories of Provence Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

DAVID CHRISTENSEN

IT’S SAFE TO SAY THAT THE PROCESS of conceptualizing his adjoining Westside concepts AIX and Tin Tin—a French Provençal restaurant and wine bar—was personal for chef Nick Leahy, who drew inspiration from the formative years he spent growing up in the region. “It holds many of my first food memories, as well as just a lot of fond memories of being together with family, enjoying each other’s company around a table full of food—and wine,” Leahy says. Modern elegance meets old-world rusticity at AIX, which borrows elements from its namesake, the French city Aix-enProvence, in both design and cuisine. The menu is comprised of classic Provençal dishes and flavors, which are lighter and more Mediterranean than Parisian French food—“more lemon and olive oil than cream and butter,” Leahy says—as well as riffs on the chef’s personal memories. His decision to pair chestnuts with

the restaurant’s lamb dish, for instance, was inspired by Leahy’s memories of a forager who used to bring chestnuts to his mother in exchange for wine. Adjoining wine bar Tin Tin also has a personal namesake: Leahy’s great-aunt, matriarch of his French family. While both concepts highlight wines from regions outside of Bordeaux or Burgundy, Tin Tin’s 10-seat, wraparound bar and sprawling enclosed and outdoor patios lend themselves to more relaxed occasions— enjoying happy hour cocktails or predinner wine and shared plates. “I think it affords our guests the chance to have different experiences each time,” notes Leahy. “I think they complement each other perfectly.” aixatl.com; tintinatl.com

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? AA: I’m the most passionate about children’s causes in Atlanta, notably, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). I just finished my term on Emerging Leaders for Children’s (ELC) and am now on the Foundation board at Children’s. Also, I am on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta. One-on-one mentoring can change the whole trajectory of a child’s life. The health, wellness and wellbeing of children in our city is of the utmost importance and no one does it better than these two organizations!

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? TB: I currently serve as treasurer of The Bus Stops Here. Recently, my husband and I implemented an endowment that will advance the academic careers of student athletes at the University of Notre Dame. I also served as a board member for Odyssey, a summer educational program for disadvantaged students in Atlanta, and I’ve served as chair for Agape’s inaugural ARISE Women’s Empowerment Luncheon. As a member of Off the Field Player Wives Association, the official NFL wives foundation, I am part of a sisterhood of women that supports various charitable causes each year. I served as this year’s honorary chair for the NFL wives fashion show during Super Bowl 53 weekend. I also take pride in donating my time to organizations that support breast cancer, extended education and community outreach.

Where do you look, or whom do you turn to for inspiration, personally or professionally? AA: My husband and children inspire me every day. Also, it is difficult to go to a meeting at CHOA and not be inspired. Children’s begins each meeting with a patient story. These are always so moving and remind all of us why we give back. It also reminds us that life is precious and we need to be grateful for every moment we have with those we love. How do you define your personal style? AA: Classic with an edge. I love interesting details on classic pieces and combining textures. What does style mean to you? AA: A way to express oneself—a way to represent yourself in a creative manner.

52

Which role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? TB: My mother is my ultimate role model. I thank God daily for providing me with the perfect example of what it means to be strong, loving and selfless. Simply put, my mom is a wonderful person who touches the heart of everyone she meets. What does style mean to you? TB: Style is about knowing what works for you, owning that look and feeling secure in your fashion choices. Style is confidence.

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? KD: This year I celebrated my third year serving on the Board of Trustees at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. I became passionate about Fernbank because I recognized that children make meaningful connections to science, nature and culture when visiting a museum of natural history. Prior to joining the Fernbank, significant endeavors include co-chairing the Empower Party to benefit GCAAP (Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential), twice co-chairing the Schenck School Gala, co-chairing Salute to American Craft to benefit the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and serving on The Preschool Board at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? CG: We are very passionate about charities that help and focus on children. A few of the charities we support are Mustard Seed Communities, Georgia Transplant Foundation and the Will to Live Foundation, which focuses on teen suicide prevention. I also have a heart for CURE Childhood Cancer. We have been part of the CURE family for 15 years. I host an annual luncheon that honors mothers of children with cancer in September, A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes.

Which role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? KD: There are a lot of strong women in my family who have severed as role models. My mother, Lynn, for her kindness and compassion; my mother-in-law, Cate, for her strength and wit; and my sisters, Caroline and Louise, for being great mothers, friends and glamour girls! Where do you look, or whom do you turn to for inspiration, personally or professionally? KD: My husband—he is a man of incredible integrity, intelligence and wit. His determination and work ethic are truly inspirational.

Which role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? CG: My husband and best friend, Tom, has been the most consistent inspiration in my life. He truly is my rock. He has made me a better person. He has worked hard throughout his life to accomplish greatness and whatever personal goals he set his sights on. He is the most diligent and disciplined person I know. I think we make a pretty great team. What does style mean to you? CG: Confidence! Your style should be a glimpse or hint of your personality. I never worried about what other people thought about what I wear and tried to impress that on my kids. I dress for myself, and of course my husband. You should dress in what makes you comfortable and of course pretty.

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? KH: Children’s Healthcare’s Aflac Cancer Clinic and Piedmont Hospital’s Doris Shaheen Breast Center. My oldest son is a childhood cancer survivor and received his treatment at the Aflac Clinic. My mother, aunt, cousin and younger sister have all battled breast cancer. They received their care from Piedmont’s Breast Center. For the past 8 years, I have co-chaired the Saks Key to the Cure luncheon benefitting the Doris Shaheen Breast Center at Piedmont Hospital. I chaired the 2008 Piedmont Ball which benefitted the Cancer Wellness Center. I am a Lifetime Member of the Piedmont Woman’s Auxiliary and a former Foundation Board Member. The last 7 years, I have co-chaired The Life is Beautiful Gala benefitting the Pregnancy Aid Clinics. My husband and I are a founding family of Holy Spirit Preparatory School. It has been one of our primary philanthropic efforts over the last 25 years.

Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? AJ: I was co-chair of the Corps de Ballet luncheon for the Atlanta Ballet; co-chair of Fernbank’s A Timeless Affair Gala: Legend of the Queen of Sheba; co-chair of Fix Georgia Pets’ Beatlemania Affair and Come Together; and co-chair for Atlanta Humane Society’s A Celebration of Dogs fine art auction in conjunction with Bonhams. I also danced the cha-cha for Dancing Stars of Atlanta to honor my great Aunt Myrtle, who suffered from Alzheimer’s.

Where do you look, or whom do you turn to for inspiration, personally or professionally? KH: My husband is my best friend and always gives me the best advice and guidance. My Christian faith is my ultimate guide and thus drives a lot of my philanthropic endeavors.

How do you define your personal style? AJ: I’ve always loved a clean-lined pantsuit, or a dress in a beautiful solid color. It balances strength with femininity.

How do you define your personal style? KH: I definitely lean toward classic designs with a bit of a modern twist to stay young and fresh. I love Audrey Hepburn’s style—classic yet feminine.

54

Which role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? AJ: My first style icon was my mother. From color to tailoring in fashion down to my career path, I’ve always followed her lead. I’ve worked in interior design since 1996, when I joined her at Womack Interiors

What does style mean to you? AJ: To me, style is about being true to yourself, not to a trend. It’s a creative process where the end result is something that underlines rather than overpowers you.You should always walk into a room knowing you make your clothes, your clothes do not make you!

Keisha Noel Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? KN: Philanthropy is a huge part of my DNA. I am involved with The Colitis Foundation of Atlanta, the National Black Arts Festival, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, the Atlanta Ballet, A Better Chance, and the Dr. Warrick Carter Scholarship Fund at Columbia College Chicago (named after my father). I am a former board member of Museum of Modern Design Atlanta and a current board member of Kile’s Beautiful Mind Foundation. Which role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? KN: I believe that my influence began at home. I grew up in a household where you never met a stranger. One of my mother’s sayings that I carry with me everyday is “we all bleed the same and all hurt the same.” I am so thankful that I was raised in a household filled with love. Where do you look, or whom do you turn to for inspiration, personally or professionally? KN: Personally, I have a tribe of amazing female warriors who feed one another with our girl’s lunches and getaways. Professionally, I marvel at Eunice Johnson of Johnson Enterprise and the equity and legacy of Chanel. What does style mean to you? KN: Fashion is today and style to is forever. I define style as the way to document your existence on earth. Who wants to look back a boring and mundane existence?

Cynthia Wall Which philanthropic causes are you passionate about? CW: I have been a part of several Atlanta organizations supporting the arts: the Alliance Theatre, National Black Arts Festival and the Atlanta Opera. I’ve also been involved with the Fernbank Museum of Natural History; the Shepherd Center Foundation and Alzheimer’s Association. Which mentors or role models have carried the greatest influence in your life? CW: James’ commitment to Boy Scouts and youth development influences me with his belief in a part of the Scout Oath, to help other people at all times. My grandfather, Samuel Hardison, was a Baptist preacher in a rural North Carolina town. I early on witnessed a selfless giving, supporting, caring for others and the community. My parents, Coy and Gerry Widner, instilled a strong work ethic and solid foundation of “doing what is right,” and I blended that with with the service of my grandfather. How do you define your personal style? CW: While my personal style is constantly changing with my mood and circumstances, I describe myself as leaning to classy, elegance and sophistication but with a touch of modern quirky. I like to bring in lots of color and accessories that lighten the mood. Never dull or straight traditional. I’ll blend new and vintage to change my look.

Clean Comfort One of the home’s main gathering spaces offers plenty of room for visiting friends and family—and views to match. The floor lamps are from Revival Home and the gray lounge chair and ottoman are from Switch Modern.

W WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING A HOUSE, “Location, location, location” is the old adage that many homeowners and real estate agents continue to live by, and for good reason. At Lake Martin, Alabama, the lure of a prime property for sale on one of the lake’s few high promontories was the draw for a keen Auburn buyer who, thankfully, wasn’t tripped up by the less-than-stellar, dated Brady Bunch-style house that distracted from a coveted view. But Austin and Michelle Singleton, along with their two children, are no ordinary buyers. As a leading marine industry entrepreneur, Austin has a home life and occupation that are inextricably intertwined and connected to the water. Having renovated several homes over the years, Austin called his longtime collaborator, architect David Baker of Tippett Sease Baker Architecture, to discuss the potential, and soon the two got to work on the transformation. “Like a lot of bad contemporary, what we tried to do is edit and remove the mistakes and make it as good as it could be,” Baker says. After all, this house is all about the views and maximizing them from within. Lowering windows all the way to the ground and raising the ceilings in certain areas made the structure as transparent as possible. Not having other homes built up across the way also gives the impression of additional privacy and seclusion. “You see the big body of water,” says Baker, “and the natural landscape is painted across it.”

Subtle Glamour In the master bedroom, with its billowing curtains, walls swathed in hide and a floating mirror, an Ochre chandelier from R Hughes adds another note of glamour. The custom ottoman is by Pfeifer Studio. French animal sculptures, South of Market.

With the home’s architectural streamlining underway, the Singletons, at Baker’s urging, called upon Susan Ferrier of Susan Ferrier Interiors to impart a contemporary verve on the home’s newly reconfigured, sun-drenched spaces. “We told Susan that we wanted modern,” says Austin, “but it had to be comfortable because that’s where we go to relax.” The look is unexpected, yet a sense of place is imbued throughout. “Every room is livable, and you want to hang out in them,” he adds. The resulting design is atmospheric, harkening to being on a boat, taking its cues from the newly framed views. “Every room in the house is based upon its relationship with the lake,” says Ferrier. “You are eye-level with the water as you’re walking through.” As a result, gauzy and ebullient window sheers echo the rippling effect of the water beyond, while more intimate spaces offer respite from the brightest times of day. “The creation of shadow in the house makes it soothing,” says Ferrier. “It’s all about enjoying the sun here, but there is reprieve from it.” With all of the light streaming in from the back of the house, the entry vestibule and transitional spaces are painted darker, more intimate colors. Some rooms were even designed with lower ceilings than the 70

rest of the house to create a feeling of “stepping into the shade,” Ferrier says. Privacy is also afforded with the layout: The children’s rooms and the master bedroom each have their own adjacent lounge areas. “When they’re not traveling, the family spends the entire summer at this house, and everybody has their own apartment, per se,” says Ferrier. “The house lives very large.” Baker agrees that it was about getting the bones right, not adding square footage, so expansion to the house was minimal—primarily to help with the entry sequence, and adding a pool. “It was already a pretty grand footprint,” he says. Now that the family can settle in for the season, Ferrier and Baker have already turned their focus on the work ahead: The duo is again collaborating for the Singletons, this time on a farmhouse located between Lake Martin and the family’s base in Auburn, where growing and cultivating fresh food on the property’s 3,500 acres is the order of the day. “For me, when any client has any opportunity to build from scratch, it is fun, it is great, it’s like Christmas morning every day,” says Baker. “If it’s not, you’ve gathered the wrong team. This was about having the right team for the right client.” See Resources, Page 107. 77

Lofty Approach Designer Courtney Giles maximized seating in the airy two-story living room with tailored pieces from Bungalow Classic. A custom painting by artist Blayne Macauley captures the living room’s dusky blue palette, while a pair of canoe maquettes suspended from the wall with rope play up the home’s escapist appeal.

W WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING AWAY, Atlantans have been escaping to Cashiers, North Carolina, for generations. Its allure is palpable: glassy lakes, sweeping vistas and crisp mountain air. And with temperatures that are 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the Southeast, it’s no wonder the population of this two-stoplight town swells from 150 to more than 10,000 in the summer. For interior designer Courtney Giles’ Atlanta clients, though, the attraction to Cashiers ran much deeper. The husband called North Carolina home for much of his childhood and was eager to share the enclave’s close-to-nature lifestyle with his young family. “He’s an avid golfer and loves to flyfish, and wanted to share those experiences with his children,” says Giles. “There isn’t a better setting to indulge in both.” So the husband and wife set their sights on a four-bedroom lakefront property and

Feminine Flair Delicate ceramic butterflies by U.K.-based artist Elizabeth Prince add a whimsical touch to the daughter’s bedroom, but their toneon-tone coloring ensures the look is fresh and modern. opposite While lavender accents bring a fun, feminine flair to the daughter’s bedroom, clean lines— from the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams bed to the inlay end table by Made Goods—make the space fit for guests of any age. The quilt is Roberta Roller Rabbit and the art was purchased at Trinity School’s Spotlight on Art Artists Market.

promptly reached out to Giles, their in-town designer, to transform the home into a weekend retreat with a more youthful point of view. “We were conscious about not making it look like a typical mountain house,” she says. “While there are certainly rustic touches, we pushed it in a more modern direction, which makes it feel fresh.” The home’s pared-down palette pulls from its surroundings, as well as the wife’s affinity for the color blue. Giles selected variations of a soothing dusky blue to complement the home’s reclaimed wood ceilings and stone fireplaces. The daughter’s bedroom takes on a more playful splash of color with lavender accents. “A few

strokes of lavender bring a feminine edge to the room without it reading ‘too girly.’ It’s a space that can grow with her,” says Giles. While decorating a home that was tailored to fit this family of five was top of mind, so was being able to host family and friends. An open-concept first floor invites guests to pile into the dining nook’s oversize banquette or cozy up to the dual-sided fireplace. But the favorite gathering spot is the back porch, says Giles, where earthyhued selections allow the property’s idllic views to be the focal point. “It’s a special piece of land and we wanted to embrace that. “WHILE THERE ARE RUSTIC TOUCHES, WE PUSHED IT IN A MODERN DIRECTION, WHICH MAKES IT FEEL VERY FRESH.” Personal Space above Accessible through the master suite, the loft was designed as a personal and private space for the husband to catch up on work. The blackand-white photography was taken by the wife, and the sisal carpeting, found throughout most of the home, is by Stark. right The spalike master bath features an eye-catching steel-and-glass shower enclosure and a soaking tub with prime views overlooking the scenic backyard.

Chic Retreat Ric Parrish and Matthew Quinn’s weekend getaway in Greene County, Georgia, is a stylish compound that includes a private lake.

AS THE OWNERS of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, Ric Parrish and Matthew Quinn are frequently on the go. Based in Atlanta, the company’s tentacles of influence spread throughout the U.S. and as far afield as Europe and Asia, with the firm’s interiors projects, as well as an assortment of luxury product lines, including a lauded decorative hardware collection. While their primary residence, a serene penthouse overlooking Piedmont Park, offers a certain aura of urban tranquility, Parrish had been stealthily searching for a getaway property for six months or so when he proposed the idea to Quinn that a weekend retreat might be the perfect tonic to their hectic schedules. The requirements were clear: As both are avid skeet shooters, Parrish had set out looking for expansive properties with at least 20 acres within a short drive of Atlanta (ideally, less than an hour and a half away). The addition of lake or water access could cinch the deal. 94

Bright Idea Quinn and Parrish bought the property on their twentieth anniversary; they affectionately named it “Camp Fiche,” as fiche is Gaelic for twenty. In the dining room, 170 palm-size wooden “fish”—inspired by a similar installation of porcelain fish they encountered during their travels—were handcrafted by an artisan for the chandelier.

Cozy Chic A black stain was applied to the hunt cabin’s original brick walls to lend contemporary verve. The wingback chairs from Swoox were a jumping point for the interiors. The gray vessel is from B.D. Jeffries; the woven pillows are from Townhouse; and the throws and white knit pillow are Holland & Sherry.

At the second property they viewed, which would become their new getaway, the allure was so strong that Quinn immediately launched into creating new renderings for the existing rustic hunt cabin. And within just a few hours, his transformative vision for the place was complete: raising roofs, rearranging porches, adding a guest house—all the while giving the getaway an undeniable contemporary vigor. Shortly after, Parrish took the reigns to oversee the interior design; in the meantime, “every wall, wire and pipe on the inside of the house was replaced,” says Quinn. “We knew it would be easier to start from scratch.” The two also got to work clearing brush and removing trees to open up the overgrown site and create new vistas to the private, spring-fed lake. The addition of a 30-foot-tall recirculating waterfall looks so authentic that longtime neighbors and first-time guests alike think it’s a natural phenomenon. While the visual design of the property certainly wows, Quinn and Parrish note that it’s the feeling guests experience that is most lasting. They readily admit that the lack of cell service and internet can be an initial shock to the system for city folk. 97

Quinn_lakehouse.indd 97

3/27/19 1:03 PM

“People freak out,” Parrish admits with a laugh. But within a few hours, they find that guests have soon forgotten about their social media feeds, and find themselves participating in one of the property’s many activities: fishing, gathering around the firepit, paddleboarding or wandering the 112-acre site. What makes everyone so at ease? “Nothing is sacred,” says Parrish. “Dogs can come in with mud. It’s not precious.” For these creatives and serial entrepreneurs, the need for this place of repose will become even more important later this year, as the two take on even more high-profile 98

projects. Quinn and Parrish are co-owners of the new 45,000-square-foot Nashville Design Collective set to open in Tennessee this fall, and the publication of Quintessential Kitchens and Spaces, the follow-up volume to Quinn’s first book, will debut in September. “I have always been able to relax as soon as I see the ocean,” says Quinn, who grew up in Key West, Florida. “This place has a similar effect; it absolutely relaxes me. Even mentally preparing to escape there, I feel my heartbeat start to slow and relax.” See Resources, Page 107.

Kitchen Smarts So that cooking at the lake house is as intuitive as possible, Quinn kept the layout of the kitchen identical to the one at their Atlanta penthouse. The raku backsplash tile from Renaissance Tile & Bath has an iridescent quality that beautifully reflects the light emanating off the lake. The black wooden bowl on the table is from Hudson Grace; the gray stoneware settings are from B.D. Jeffries.

A Warm Welcome Personal collections imbue the home with a laid-back luxury. Refrigeration drawers, a wine cooler and bar sink by the front entrance make crafting drinks a cinch for guests who arrive in time for cocktail hour.

Suite Dreams The guesthouse features a pair of identical suites; the bedding is Peacock Alley and the throw and gray pillow are from Erika Reade. A custom brass-lined porthole and oculus evoke a nautical vibe. Forty-eight-inch-wide vanity sinks are helpful when accommodating visits from extended family. The showers include teak ooring and brushed brass ďŹ ttings by Brizo.

Quiet Connection The master bedroom is enveloped in a custom gray annel curtain wall, alongside rich textures. All windows feature triple-lined blackout curtains for sleeping in. The painting is by Hal Schwarze and the rug is Moattar.

While the visual design of the property certainly wows, Quinn and Parrish note that it’s the feeling guests experience that is most lasting.

Tapped In The property offers complete privacy for its owners and guests. Overlooking the lake, with the sound of the waterfall just beyond, Quinn’s tub for MTI Baths takes “forest bathing” to the next level, he says. Landscaping by Matt Fulton of Willow Oaks Landscapes.

LIFE

END NOTE

CONTEMPOR ARY WARMTH

“WARM CONTEMPORARY for sale in Malibu. Ocean Views. 1,200 square feet. $1.4 million,” read the magazine ad. Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw and Goldie Hawn were among the Hollywood hippies hanging out in Malibu in the 1970s. Macramé plant holders hung from wood-paneled walls while the Pacific waves pounded the shore. Now Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron and Kate Hudson can be found grabbing a bite at Malibu Farm or shopping in Malibu Market. Although the houses are still packed like sardines along the coastline, they’ve changed from simple shacks to palatial expanses. Today’s A-list clientele gravitates toward a sleek and sophisticated style that’s imbued with the warmth of the California sun and filled with indigenous woods and stone. The term “warm contemporary” has populated the SoCal lexicon for a few years, and now it has become part of the universal design language as homeowners meld the simplicity and function of modern with the comfort and warmth of casual for a relaxed lifestyle. 108

One day after lunch at my favorite spot in Malibu, I decided to explore nearby neighborhoods. After looking through the real estate magazine, I was reminded of the “warm contemporary with ocean views.” Thinking of the many celebrity residents of the area, I wanted to see a Malibu beachfront home where a famous person might live. As I headed toward the coast, I realized that my GPS was taking me to the Paradise Cove Mobile Home Park. That “warm contemporary” that was advertised? It was a perky yellow double-wide with a white plastic picket fence in the gated mobile home community. Yes, it had a Malibu beach view. But a manufactured home? In a gated community? For over a million dollars? Atlanta has beautiful landscapes and is teeming with talented architects and gifted designers who create masterpieces of all design aesthetics. However, the best news (in my humble opinion) is that you can get a real house for that kind of money, or maybe ten double-wides—whatever you prefer—for your warm contemporary abode.

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE

Presented by Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and benefiting the Atlanta History Center, the fourth annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens celebrates the South’s inimitable hospitality and flourishing design industry, as well as the beauty the region offers throughout spring. This year brings together interior design firms from the Southeast and beyond, and we are thrilled to have Honorary Showhouse Chair Robert Brown at the helm. Built by Southern Gentry Homes and designed by Logan Design Group, the newly built, 12,268-square-foot estate is located on 5.2 acres and features Lowcountry-inspired elements such as painted brick, natural stone, slate, metal roofing, steel-glazed entry doors, timber columns and deep roof overhangs. Entry porches, a two-story great room and an expanse of doors opening into the backyard emphasize a connection to the outdoors, which feature landscape design by Joe A. Gayle & Associates and Floralis Garden Design. The 14-acre site—which will eventually house three custom-built homes in a gated community that will be known as Garmon La Mare—also holds historical significance. According to research, the existing pond, which once served as a playground for Buckhead families—was the byproduct of a 19th-century quarry; elaborate stone outcroppings, such as a circa-1920s pump house, stone pathways and a stone picnic table (all of which remain on-site today), would have come from that quarry. From 1931 to 2018, the property belonged to the family of Joseph Madison High, including widow Harriett “Hattie” Harwell Wilson High, whose donation of her family’s Peachtree Street mansion provided for the establishment of the High Museum. We warmly welcome you to explore this year’s showhouse and its grounds to soak up the best of spring—and we hope you’ll find some design inspiration and Southern geniality to take home for yourself. 10

WELCOME! Is there anything sweeter than spring in Atlanta? At the 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, built by Southern Gentry Homes and designed by Logan Design Group, we’re celebrating the season by shining light on some of the Southeast’s best design talents. As you walk through the home, you’ll tour the work of design firms from Atlanta and across the Southeast— from Florida to Tennessee, Alabama and North Carolina. We are delighted to have interior designer Robert Brown, who has designed the showhouse dining room, serve as this year’s Honorary Showhouse Chair.

Situated on 5.2 acres in Buckhead, this year’s home is transitional in style, showcasing materials such as painted brick, natural stone, slate, iron, natural wood and other natural metals. An abundance of natural light, deep roof overhangs and several entry porches emphasize a connection to the outdoors. Inside, you’ll find a showstopping, two-story great room, a 1,231-square-foot master suite with a veranda, and an expanse of doors that connect the main level living area to the backyard.

THE MAGAZINE

Landscape architects Joe A. Gayle & Associates and Floralis Garden Design have transformed the showhouse grounds, which include a pool, as well as a historic and natural pond that was once used as a playground for Buckhead families. The site also served as hunting grounds and a weekend retreat for the influential Joseph Madison High family, and a stone wellhouse, picnic table, benches and a barbecue grill dating from the 1920s remain on the property today.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Fitting with this historical significance, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is honored to welcome back the Atlanta History Center—one of our city’s most respected cultural institutions—as this year’s beneficiary. We are thrilled to work hand-in-hand with an organization dedicated to preserving and fostering an appreciation for our city’s history. Welcome to the 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens! 20

With more than 15 years of industry experience, owner and senior architect, Dietrich Logan manages each project using a proactive, client-focused approach from hand-drawn schematic drafts to confirmed construction blueprints. The LDG design team makes the initial client meeting a priority, addresses questions and concerns immediately, and maintains a high level of interaction from the onset of a project. Through conducting contract negotiation, managing construction and contractor budgeting, and presenting structured research on sustainable and energy efficient building alternatives, the LDG design team effectively supports the efficient development of each project. While in graduate school at the University of Georgia, Gayle opened a landscape design/build business that grew into a retail garden center, lawn maintenance and wholesale groundcover nursery. In the late ’90s he sold his company to pursue his interest in design and construction management. His designs have won numerous awards for excellence, including 15 at the state level and two on a national level. Gayle’s projects have been featured in Southern Accents, Southern Homes, Money Magazine and American Nurseryman as well as on national television shows such as the Today show and Good Morning America. He has a unique ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously for a diverse clientele— from redesigning distressed properties for the City Bank of New York, to working on the multiple detailed estates of Kenny Rogers to designing the 13,000-acre summer retreat of Bernard Schneider. Other clients include Nick Saban, Sam Nunn and Tom Glavine.

n 1996, Phoebe and Jim Howard opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, Florida, hoping to demystify the decorat-

ing process for their customers. The goal was simple: to create a retail space that showcased Jim’s architectural and decorating talent, and Phoebe’s natural skills for buying, decorating and merchandising. With equal parts exceptional customer service and a wellrounded mix of furniture, antiques and accessories, the store was an instant success. Five years later, they added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern appeal. Now, the Howards have Mrs. Howard and Max & Company stores in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina. Over the years, Phoebe’s penchant for creating stylish spaces has evolved into

After being in New York for one year, he moved back to Atlanta, where he is retained by Peter Block Architects as lead consultant. Schooled in the classics, restraint and appropriateness—with dashes of unexpected theatrics—
