WELCOME

FROM THE EDITOR

summer! LIKE A CHILD ON A SWELTERING SUMMER day, I’m diving into the waves of the sunny season head-first. Why? For starters, fewer commitments, both personally and professionally, make me want to whistle out loud. There are also vacations planned, books to read, quality time to spend with family and friends near and far—and let’s not forget those impromptu celebrations, like a picnic, or frosé (frozen rosé) on a Tuesday afternoon just because it’s a beautiful day, and time well-spent brings content. Speaking of time well-spent, our June issue dives into three utterly refreshing design projects, each pushing the boundaries of what is expected, but in way that still feels gracious and elegant. In Buckhead, architect Stan Dixon and interior designer Beth Webb fashion a resort-like outdoor retreat (page 48) that’s every bit as smart and stylish as the well-heeled interiors of the main house. In Tuxedo Park, Melanie Turner and Stan Benecki open the doors to a newly constructed home the pair built from the ground up that employs breezy, California style and an envious indoor-outdoor connection from the moment you step inside (page 54). And finally, builder Kevin Kleinhelter, residential designer Katherine Lowrey and interior designer Clary Bosbyshell reimagined the Atlanta residence of a young family of seven (page 40), leaving them with a practical but positively stylish home designed to withstand wear and tear from too summer filled with whatever brings you contentment! NEW DIGS for DW R

With its new location at the Westside Provisions District, DESIGN WITHIN REACH has tripled the size of its former Buckhead showroom for a total of 13,000 square feet of authentic modern furniture and accessories. Featuring DWR’s trademark “Light Cloud” of more than 100 pendant lamps suspended from the ceiling, the airy, two-story building houses 26 room-like layouts that mix iconic classics by designers such as Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson with pieces designed by emerging designers. Also of note are the Swatch Wall—a grid of hundreds of custom fabric samples that shoppers may pull off for a closer look—and a rooftop patio with outdoor furniture, greenery and views of the Downtown skyline. dwr.com

IN APRIL, Alabama-based COLEMAN TAYLOR TEXTILES unveiled a limited collection of hand-painted fabrics in collaboration with British paint-and-paper powerhouse FARROW & BALL. The first of two collections employs five signature Farrow & Ball wallcovering pattern motifs (such as Bumble Bee) rendered in its complementary chalky matte paints—an intriguing, dimensional departure from the pearlized look proprietors Jan Hale and Crystal Walker are known for. The textile firm will also have the ability to capability to apply Farrow & Ball’s paints to its own classic design collections, painted on grounds of plush velvet, Belgian linen and fine Scottish wools. The Truax: “It’s a supersized traditional take on the midcentury modern globe pendant. I saw some massive ones in Palm Springs years back and have been obsessed ever since, but since I was never able to locate them sold retail, I decided to design my own transitional version. They’re offered in different sizes and finishes, with and without the banding in the center, and my favorite is the 30-inch diameter with the aged brass banding. Another fun fact: The 30-inch globes are made of acrylic, which makes them kid-friendly and also makes them shippable in two pieces, so there’s no need for a supermassive box and no worries about a huge glass orb breaking in transit. Plus, the banding conceals the seams between the top and bottom halves of the globe. Truax is my mom’s maiden name, and I love names with the letter X, and so it was a perfect fit.”

The Hulton: “It’s a cage within a cage, all about perpendicular lines, and there’s a cylindrical shade in the center to diffuse the light. I decided to go with matte black for most of the finishes to keep things fresh and also simple. Its name comes from my paternal grandmother; it’s her maiden name.”

MODERN MARVELS

Atlanta design pro Brian Patrick Flynn brings his bold sense of style to Crystorama Lighting with a collection of fashion-forward, of-the-moment fixtures WHETHER YOU KNOW BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN FROM HIS WITTY COMMENTARY on social media (see @bpatrickflynn on Instagram) or as a bona fide decorator transforming homes with his bold, unexpected sense of style, one thing that’s clear is that Flynn’s unique point of view is both respected and relied upon, be it in the U.S. or in far flung locales such as Reykjavík, Iceland, where he’s recently landed a second home. And, in his first-ever licensed collection—eclectic lighting fixtures for Crystorama Lighting—the designer tasked himself with playing with shape, proportion, materials and finish to expand the range of creative options available to designers and consumers, all while keeping Crystorama’s wallet-friendly price points in mind. The results: fixtures that are classically inspired, but with a Flynn-sonian fresh twist. Available in Metro

Atlanta through Progressive Lighting, progressivelighting.com for stores, or online at crystorama.com 18

The Alston: “This is the simplest of the fixtures, an updated take on the classic drum pendant. It’s made of metal and offered in matte black with white interior, and matte white with gold interior. They’re 20 inches in diameter, and something that makes them super unique is the chunky, oversized rectangular chain. The name comes from my favorite aunt back home in Florida, Jeannie. Alston is her maiden name.”

NORMAN

ASKINS WRITTEN BY Suzanna

Cullen Hamilton

From Camelot to capstone, the 40-year career of Norman Davenport Askins spans from preserving historical architecture to adapting design philosophies for modern lifestyles

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Askins received his architecture degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1966 and a Master of Architectural History from the University of Virginia in 1968, where he was a Jefferson Scholar.

Framing

Askins spent four years as an architect and architectural historian at the Colonial Williamsburg foundation, where he studied early building technology and restoration. While at Williamsburg, Askins participated in redesigning the interiors of the Executive Office wing of the White House.

Askins designed this Atlanta home to appear as though it developed throughout the Middle Ages, early Renaissance and French Rococo periods. An Askinsdesigned master suite addition to an original James Means house.

20

After spending two years with Heery and Heery Architects in Atlanta, Askins moved to Pennsylvania in 1974 to become the director of restoration for John Milner Associates, a firm nationally renowned for historic preservation.

Finishes

In 1977 Askins established his eponymous firm in Atlanta, specializing in residential design with a focus on historic preservation and restoration. He now employs 10 architects whose scope of expertise includes residential homes, plantations and additions to existing homes. Architects who began their careers with Askins have gone on to launch 18 other firms. Askins has served on a number of boards, including Friends of the Decorative Arts, the High Museum of Art, historic Rhodes Hall, the Cherokee Garden Library and the Southern Architecture Foundation.

The Capstone

Askins is the 2017 recipient of the Arthur Ross Board of Directors award. Awarded by the preeminent Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA), the prestigious award recognizes achievements and contributions to the preservation and advancement of classical elements of design.

D. Stanley Dixon Architect This mountain home

in Cashiers, North Carolina, which won the award for ARCHITECTURE— RESIDENTIAL UNDER 5,000 SQUARE FEET, takes cues from the area’s natural beauty. Architect D. Stanley Dixon blended old and new, limiting the exterior materials to board-and-batten and using plaster walls with timber framing on the interior, where antique wood and leathered stone add texture.

æ

Thomas A. Player Thomas A. Player took home the

award for ARTISANSHIP/CRAFTSMANSHIP for his work in bronze relief. Using wax-based clay and a “lost wax process,” his work evokes the feel of one of the earliest forms of storytelling, featuring battle scenes, legends and religious and historical events.

â

Wade Weissmann Architecture To accommo-

date the homeowners’ wish to be able to host large events in their Nashville home, architect Wade Weissmann reimagined the backside of the house, earning the award for RENOVATION—UNDER 5,000 SQUARE FEET. A formal rear courtyard boasts an architectural folly, covered porch and pool terrace that echo the style of the main house’s original Georgian architecture.

Existing materials were reused throughout the new construction, and the project gained recognition for RENOVATION—OVER 5,000 SQUARE FEET.

GOING FOR THE BOLD A Virginia-Highland renovation showcases designer Elle Cantrell’s knack for collected, contemporary interiors WRITTEN BY Lori Johnston PHOTOGRAPHED BY Marc Mauldin

E above The kitchen is all about contrast, thanks to counters sourced from Associated Imports and a tile backsplash from Materials Marketing. right Fabrics by Jim Thompson, Porter Teleo, Perennials and Link Outdoor add graphic and colorful whimsy to the front porch of the renovated Virginia-Highland home. opposite, clockwise from top The dining room is a captivating space featuring a Muriel bubble chandelier from Oly, custom furniture, and the homeowner’s existing acrylic and chrome chairs. There’s a whisper of soft blue in the master bedroom, seen in the custom rug from Verde Home and window treatments made by Home Accent Design using Pindler fabric. Antique pieces from around the world, including an African sculpture on the coffee table, mix with new contemporary furniture to give the home a collected feel; Cantrell paired the homeowner’s existing pieces, such as an original womb chair by Eero Saarinen, with modern selections from Design Within Reach and Cantoni.

26

LLE CANTRELL KNEW EARLY ON that interior design was in her future. Starting at 4 years old, she helped her family’s designer choose final selections for their home. “Our designer was so wonderful and I think saw from an early age that I was creative,” she says. “She really motivated me from a young age to get interested and stay interested in design.” Today, Cantrell’s contemporary style, punctuated with masculine and graphic elements, can be seen in the black, white and gray palette of a recent Virginia-Highland renovation. Although her interest was sparked in childhood, Cantrell honed her design sense at SCAD Atlanta, where she worked with such noted architects and designers as Keith Summerour and Joel Kelly. She interned with Summerour’s firm, working with Yvonne McFadden, and then joined McFadden in her new firm after graduating with a bachelor’s in interior design in 2011. Cantrell’s education and experiences paved the way for her to lead the interiors department at Redefined Home Boutique and launch her own firm, Elle Du Monde. When renovating this early 1900s VirginiaHighland home for homeowner Laura Boone, co-owner of Turnerboone commercial interiors, she selected a bold wallpaper, from Cole & Son’s

From the wallpaper to a white antler sconce and neon coral front door, Cantrell embraced the homeowner’s enthusiasm for daring design choices. She felt she hit the design jackpot with Boone’s existing artwork and furniture, including an Eero Saarinen-designed womb chair and a Noguchi Prismatic table. Combined with custom tables, rugs and cabinetry and stair hardware designed by Cantrell, the 2,300-square-foot home has a collected, authentic air. “Every one of the pieces in her home, I would put in my home,” Cantrell says. AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, but I feel like there is turmoil all around me. It’s gotten to the point that any time I’m hit with troubling news via television or the internet—and these days, bad news seems to come on a daily basis—I want to hibernate in my home in an effort to escape the madness. In fact, lately my home has become a kind of Prozac, one that enhances my mood and gives me hope for the future. And while soft, warm lighting and comfortable fabrics have certainly helped to make my abode a refuge, it’s color that has really made it a place to lift my spirits. There are certain hues that, no matter what, make all seem right with the world. Take yellow, for example, which does wonders at banishing any doom or gloom. I lifted a page from design legend Nancy Lancaster’s playbook and painted my living room radiant yellow—not quite “buttah yellah,” as the Virginia-born Lancaster referred to her drawing room’s famous pigment, but rather a shade more akin to an egg yolk. And let me tell you, no matter what’s going on outside, my living room is always sunny and warm, a cheerful panacea in today’s troubled times. Have you ever wanted to give a room the impression that it’s extending a welcoming hug? If so, paint it pink. Not a shocking, jarring shade of pink, mind you, but one that is soft and almost shell-like. On the other hand, if you want a room to give you a more emphatic embrace, try painting it a deep shade of brown or even black, enhanced by a glossy finish. It might seem counterintuitive, but many of these dark shades act like buffers to the outside world and work best in rooms used at night. Really, most colors can do wonders for the soul, so choose the shades that make you feel best. In a world that seems turned upside down, it’s nice to know that a little color can make you feel right side up.

The sunlit dining room of this Argonne Forest home is transitional in tone, softening the space’s slightly more oldfashioned purpose. IN AN AGE OF SOCIAL MEDIA MATCHES and tailored-to-you algorithms, it’s easier—and arguably more essential—than ever to seek out design professionals who don’t just do the job but also uniquely understand your aesthetic and your needs. So when Quincy and Amy Evans, the young owners of a traditional two-story in Argonne Forest decided to renovate, they selected both a residential designer, Katherine Lowrey, and an interior designer, Clary Bosbyshell, of Margaux Interiors Limited, who are also their contemporaries. To that point, Amy discovered Bosbyshell in the most contemporary of ways: through Instagram. “She had followed my work for a while and said she really liked the pictures I was posting,” explains the

The Roman shades are made from a Kelly Wearstler–designed Katana fabric and recall the subtle green-blue walls of the new dining room (painted Benjamin Moore’s Palladian Blue). below Residential designer Katherine Lowrey and interior designer Clary Bosbyshell worked with Kevin Kleinhelter of K2 Construction to bring the circa-1990s house up to date for a young family of seven.

designer. Bosbyshell and Lowrey, who belong to the same Buckhead garden club and have children around the same age, were delighted at the opportunity to work together. And because they intimately understand the needs of busy parents, creating a solution for this family of seven felt downright intuitive. “They wanted to increase the usability of their home, the connection between the interior and exterior, and open up their kitchen and living spaces,” Lowrey says. She shifted the floor plan to enhance circulation throughout the six-bedroom residence, installed hidden storage, maximized square footage, and increased the connection between indoors and out via sophisticated exterior living spaces. K2 Construction owner Kevin Kleinhelter was instrumental in bringing Lowrey and Bosbyshell’s vision to fruition—right down to converting an antique marble-top chest into a vanity for Bosbyshell’s powder room concept. The kitchen was another shining moment for Bosbyshell, who added plenty of organizational drawers, a custom stainless steel and unlacquered brass hood, coordinating hardware, and an island countertop with a sleek waterfall edge. From here, you get a glimpse of the formal dining room, graced with a fresh, timeless shade of green-blue. 42

Employing performance fabrics In the breakfast room was a requirement, says Bosbyshell, with so many little feet and fingers in the mix. The banquette is upholstered in a wipeable vinyl, and the accent pillows are indoor-outdoor fabrics; they sidle up to a Saarinen tulip table and chairs that soften the space’s straight lines. “I like to use this table for big families,” she says. “You can literally take it outside and hose it off.” The abstract painting is by Atlantan Sally King Benedict. “This was one of the first times I asked a client to paint the entire room—crown molding, window mullions and walls—in high gloss,” Bosbyshell recalls. “And the results were worth it; the way the light reflects on everything is stunning.” Additional dining spaces include a playful but sensible breakfast nook and a gorgeous outdoor dining setup on a patio of bluestone pavers. Framed by a backdrop of striking new steel windows and doors, the area allows the large family to make the most of Atlanta’s 46

extended summers. “I think [the clients] chose Clary and me because we understand the way they live,” Lowrey says. “What’s been so fun about this project is how all of us saw eye to eye on everything. It was just . . . easy.” Marking the first major autonomous project for both designer and residential designer, the final product has also led to referrals by the happy homeowners (who, by the way, wouldn’t change a thing). CREATING ANOTHER WORLD right outside in our backyard is something many of us delighted in during childhood; whether we were fairies or soldiers, our imaginations turned the everyday into the extraordinary. For a family in Buckhead, a bit of that childhood magic is still at play. Just a stone’s throw from their home lies the ultimate grown-up escape—an outdoor pavilion with all the trimmings for relaxing or gathering. “It’s truly a destination—a getaway on their own property,” says architect D. Stanley Dixon, who worked with landscape architect Richard Anderson on the project. Adds interior designer Beth Webb, “It’s a multifunctional space that’s comfortable but still very stylish.” The architectural design took cues from the main residence, a 1920s classic Buckhead beauty, as well as Neel Reid’s 1918 Peachtree train station near the Brookwood Hills neighborhood. “It’s evocative of the Italianate style of architecture,” says Dixon, “with its rusticated brick corners, arched openings, extended bracketed overhangs and Doric columns.” The design also includes a focal wall composed of native fieldstone with a fountain at its center. Dixon looked to noted English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll when articulating the wall. Jekyll, who created hundreds of gardens in the late 1800s and early 1900s, would be pleased but also certainly surprised at all the amenities in the pavilion itself—a television hidden behind a Dixon-designed mirror, a fireplace, and a 51

refrigerator and ice maker housed in an eyecatching custom buffet. When planning the decor, Webb knew that her client’s favorite color, orange, would be an essential part of the mix. “Orange really was the impetus for many of the design decisions,” says Webb, “and we wanted more transitional interiors, which the homeowner was embracing in the primary residence—nothing too fussy and always with an eye on comfort.” While the furnishings and accessories are mostly shielded from the elements, Webb didn’t want to take any chances. The furniture, rugs, upholstery and pillows are outdoor-friendly but never give away their secret. Other choices were the same as those for an interior room—a dramatic overhead lantern, a pretty pair of lamps on the custom buffet and weighted floor lamps that resemble curving tree branches as a nod to the setting. The pavilion takes a page from childhood pursuits with its liveliness and charm, but it’s buttoned-up and functional enough for any grown-up adventure. See Resources, Back of Book. 53

IT’S NO SECRET THAT CREATING AN innovative but intriguing home takes talent and teamwork, but it’s a balance interior designer Melanie Turner of Melanie Turner Interiors and developer Stan Benecki of Benecki Homes have nearly mastered. The husband and wife are an undeniable force behind some of Atlanta’s most showstopping residences, and it’s their synchronicity that makes them so unstoppable. When building a Buckhead manse from the ground up, the couple knew they wanted to pull out all the stops. “There’s a format between the two of us where we’re always trying to raise the bar with design,” Turner says. “We had a fresh canvas and were able to do things that a lot of people haven’t seen before.”

Baker, employed an edited approach that incorporates traditional elements but also organic textures, large-scale furnishings and a high contrast palette to produce a breezy escape that feels as understated as it does sculptural. In the larger-than-life living room, custom floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to illuminate the space and reflect off the custom plaster walls, which Benecki extended from floor to ceiling without trim for a clean feel (“it just glows in here,” says Turner).

This unassuming but fresh effect continues in the room’s furnishings, which Turner kept mostly neutral, adding balance with textured details such as knit pillows, an African beaded headdress, a knotty wood console and artwork by Atlanta artist Todd Murphy. To break up the large living space, Turner fashioned two distinct sitting areas: one visible from the entryway and another tucked at the other end of the room in front of the television, where “you’re able to sit as a family, watch television and make a mess if you want, but you can’t see it from the front door,” notes the designer. 57

In the lofty living room, sunlight streams through floor-to-ceiling windows and reflects off custom plaster walls, which continue up to the ceiling seamlessly without trim. Turner selected white furnishings with pops of black for a crisp sense of cohesion, while texture in the form of a knotty wood console, jute rug and vintage finds such as a string of beads and a headdress from Africa create sensual appeal.

“WE WANTED THAT CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE, AND WE WANTED THE HOUSE TO FEEL LIKE YOU’RE ALWAYS ON VACATION WITHOUT ACTUALLY LEAVING TOWN.” — MELANIE TURNER

Custom tile from SOURCE lines the kitchen walls and extends up to the barrel-vaulted ceiling. “We actually have a tiled kitchen at our own house,” says Turner. “We loved it so much that we wanted to incorporate it in this house.” To make the room feel even more open, they avoided upper cabinetry. The black-and-white palette strikes a harmonious balance between masculine and feminine. Barstools, Bradley. Banquette, TecnoSedia. Appliances through Guy Gunter Home.

Equally light and open is the kitchen, where a large window provides views of the backyard pool and glossy custom tiles by SOURCE create a striking effect on the walls and high barrel ceiling. Continuing the black-and-white scheme, bright Arabescato Vagli marble countertops contrast with darker elements such as the barstools, banquette and cabinetry, painted Sherwin-Williams’ Caviar, which was also used on the bar cabinets and the walls of the home’s moody library. “We wanted the space to be simple and bold,” says Turner of her signature aesthetic. In the master suite, she explains, “male and female play off each other with black and white” via custom geometric flooring—tile in the bath and carpet in the bedroom— that stands out against the white walls. This bold color contrast is tempered with more-traditional elements used throughout the home. “There are elements builders

used to do in houses that are no longer done that give them personality and character,” says Turner. One such addition is a pair of murals—black-and-white cranes painted by artist Bethany Travis of Penshaw Hill. Another traditional touch is the dining room’s ornate dentil molding, which was scaled larger than usual for a fresh twist. “Everything’s familiar, but it’s just put together differently. It’s using all those elements but using them very softly,” says Benecki. “We’re able to put the details and the energy in this house that we’d like to do without having somebody tell us no. And then when it’s done, people realize that it’s what they wanted all along.” It’s this dream team’s creative synergy that allows the architecture and interiors to play off one another so seamlessly, and the result is one of a kind. And, true to form, Turner and Benecki sold the house within three days of completion. Raising the bar, indeed. See Resources, Back of Book. 63

is the master bath’s shower, which features custom doors and a window that faces the backyard (there’s a retractable screen for privacy). “We wanted it to feel like you were outside at all times, so we did an outside shower window that looks into your garden,” says Turner.

Westward, Whoa!

T

HE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER have descended with long, sweltering days that cloak the South like a wet wool blanket. As much as our dogs enjoy languishing in the comfort of home, any opportunity to hang out of car windows while humans blast the air conditioning is met with unbridled joy. Atlantans’ labs and goldens, and more than a few King Charles spaniels, are a constant presence in carpool lines. Southerners appreciate the fine, even temperament of such faithful family members. Large dogs, of course, require sizable vehicles and spacious yards, and Atlanta accommodates both. Our homes (and parking lots) permit an abundance of SUVs, so we can travel heavy with our happy herds. Although Angelenos share an equal affinity for their dogs, the similarities stop there. Los Angeles does not have the luxury of expansive parking, so capacious SUVs do not exist here. Saint Bernards and Great Danes can’t hang out of Bentley Continental GT convertibles on Wilshire Boulevard, and it’s impossible to maneuver a dog-laden SUV through an underground garage in Beverly Hills. 76

The petite French bulldog is the LA dog of the moment, having replaced the yappy and temperamental rhinestonecollared Chihuahua. Perks of the Frenchie include that he fits into a luxury compact car, but he walks on a leash like a real dog rather than traveling via baby stroller or open-top Hermès tote like the aforementioned Chihuahua. I am probably most inharmonious with Los Angeles when I am with my dogs. My pack of large rescue hounds includes bloodhounds, foxhounds, coonhounds, Vizslas and labs. Together we are a traveling circus of long ears, long tails and loud howls. We travel via Suburban with the windows rolled down so that all ears and snouts have a full-blown wind-sensory experience. Pulling up to a light on Rodeo Drive next to Ferraris and Rolls-Royces, we are the embodiment of country come to town! It’s been decades since Hollywood created The Beverly Hillbillies; however, I’m doing my prodigious part to educate Angelenos on the extraordinary Southern hound dog. It’s time to hit the Melrose Trading Post to find my granny gown to complete the picture!
