Associate Editor Claire CLAIRE RUHLIN visits all-day breakfast restaurant PANCAKE SOCIAL at Ponce City Market.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER? I’ll take them. After a gray winter and wet spring, I could not be more excited to plant an herb garden, feed our neighborhood hummingbirds and sink my toes into the pool water. The summer months in our house are synonymous with freedom—fewer commitments, less routine…more daylight, and extra fun. What’s not to love?

This month, Atlanta artist CAROLYN CARR unveils works such as Afternoon Shadows (2018) at Jackson Fine Art gallery.

The homes featured in our June issue offer the ultimate

versions of in-town escapes. Rambling terraces, a pool cabana and ping-pong table are the secret sauce at Bonneau a linear, Hamptons-style pool and two stories of outdoor space provide Brian Watford’s clients with the sophisticated breeziness they adored about Florida’s Alys Beach (page 32). Speaking of in-town retreats, the 2019 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Southeastern Designer Showhouse on Garmon Road is open to the public for tours through June 2. A former hunting estate located on a 15-acre site in the heart of Buckhead, its transformation by nearly 20 of the region’s most talented interior design firms is not to be missed, and we hope you will join us for this spring tradition. How will you spend your summer? Whether you are fleeing the urban scene or embracing your own version of a staycation, we hope you discover joy in the journey.

PALM BEACH PANACHE A bright combination that originated in South Florida—citrus hues and crisp white— now populates houses from coast to coast with infusions of painted rattan, Lucite and Chinese Chippendale Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

EARLY DAYS When Standard Oil magnate Henry Flagler established the Florida East Coast Railway in 1894, he changed residential development, hospitality and American style in the process. After building his opulent 100,000-square-foot mansion “Whitehall” in Palm Beach, Flagler developed the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers, thereby solidifying the 18-mile stretch of beach as the epitome of style in the Gilded Age. Lavish events were hosted throughout the winter months as America’s wealthiest families escaped to Palm Beach for “the season.”

above In the Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House, Danielle Rollins used waterfall woven wood shades and tailored pleat drapery in custom fabric, linings and borders from The Shade Store. Brass nautilus from Chairish.

20

Palm Beach quickly became a second-home destination, and Worth Avenue shops were filled with names such as Vanderbilt, Astor, Rockefeller, Carnegie and Morgan. Soon the heavy and ornate styles of the original developers were replaced with designs more appropriate for the climate and the period. The formal Gilded Aged aesthetics gave way to a relaxed mid-century style that still permeates South Florida design.

INFLUENCES

BOLD BEACH THEMES The bright, clear colors of the South Florida coast combined with days that revolved around the ocean, beach and golf course set the palette for both interiors and fashion. Palm Beach resident and iconic designer Lilly Pulitzer created her famous citrushued dresses after splashing her clothes too many times with juice from her husband’s orange groves. Those same tones of coral, turquoise, lime green and egg yolk-yellow were found in interiors throughout the area that featured crisp white walls and views of the ocean. Seashells, peacock wicker chairs and Lucite coffee tables were decorative accessories in most living rooms, while dining rooms frequently featured white lacquered rattan or Chinese Chippendale furniture surrounded by decorative treillage grids lining the walls.

MASS MARKET Palm Beach style continues to permeate the market—and far beyond the sunny shores of South Florida. Lilly Pulitzer now offers a wide range of home goods in addition to remaining a staple in summer closets from Palm Beach to Laguna. White with punches of bold tropical hues remains a popular palette throughout the country, while Lucite and painted wicker are attractive for a myriad of uses. For 70 years, Palm Beach style has remained crisp and clean, yet inviting and cheery. For that, Lilly would be enormously pleased. 21

the biggest challenge, says Adams, is bringing the systems—from electrical to mechanical to plumbing—up to code without gutting the home and the original details, such as plasterwork and moldings. Historic renovations comprise about 15 percent of the work for Adams’ firm. “When a client approaches, we let them know it is a commitment. It’s not something you take lightly. You have to understand there are challenges,” he says. When Adams embarked upon a renovation of a 1916 Reid home, he researched archived plans and found garage drawings that served as inspiration for a new carriage house. “It is worth it. You do end up with truly something spectacular,” he says.

The firm plans by the end of the year to move from Brasfield Square into a four-story building at the corner of Bill Kennedy Way and Faith Avenue. WHEN HISTORIC HOMES and properties designed by noted architects such as Neel Reid, Philip Trammell Shutze and James Means appear on the market these days, it leads to questions about their fate. But when they are restored, architects have conversations with clients about respecting the original design while renovating. It’s important to let the older home be proud and prominent, says Tim Adams of T.S. Adams Studio, Architects. While updating kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, in particular, to meet today’s tastes,

Naomi Von Habersham WHEN IT COMES TO DRESSING FOR SUMMER, I aspire to be that stylish woman of the world who dons modish caftans and jeweled thong sandals made by Canfora in Capri, footwear which seems made to show off that chic coral polish on one’s toes. But so far, my intentions have yet to come true. The reality is that when temperatures swelter, all I can bare, I mean bear, to wear are loose-fitting linen or cotton tops over baggy linen drawstring pants. If my toes are pedicured, I might wear sandals, but more often than not, it’s espadrilles for me. I know it doesn’t sound particularly flattering, but when my summer days involve morning trips to Publix while the temperature is bearable or afternoon movies at the theater to escape the heat, dressing like Elizabeth Taylor in her Pucci caftans seems pointless. As little effort as I make on myself during the summer, I treat my home with far more attention. This summer, my patio seating will look its best with crisp, striped Sunbrella fabric edged in a contrasting welt. It’s a little sporty and nautical looking, which is the exact opposite of me. I’m also preparing for outdoor dining by replenishing my supply of pillar candles for use in my Amanda Lindroth cane hurricanes, which go so well with her woven place mats and her rattan bakeware. (If you can’t have a home in Harbour Island or Lyford Cay, you might as well entertain as though you do.) And I’m super excited about my latest purchase: a Dynatrap mosquito and insect trap. Let’s hope it works as well as they say it does. Meanwhile, there’s work to be done indoors, where I’ll switch out my candles and potpourri with a lighter, summery fragrance; oud and myrrh just won’t do when it’s 85 degrees outside. And I can’t wait to dress my bed in my latest indulgence: D. Porthault sheeting printed with blue seashells. Even if I don’t look my most attractive this summer, at least I know my home will.

ACCORDING TO DAN JACOBSON, owner of Steel Wave Ventures and formerly of Chick-fil-A, Ponce City Market’s all-day breakfast restaurant, Pancake Social, is “a love for pancakes done right.” Also behind the eatery are Jacobsen’s partners: Steven Chan, Tony Riffel, and chef Anne Quatrano. And while pancakes and coffee are the restaurant’s bread and butter (expect everything from lemon soufflé to Dutch baby to pecan praline pancakes), the menu also includes healthier options such as grain bowls, avocado toast and fresh juices. “We wanted to see a menu that did not have Southern classics but instead had new twists—like using artisanal and gluten-free grains— and that was a little healthier and fresher. We liked the dichotomy of pancakes alongside surprisingly healthy strawberry-beet-apple juice and the quinoa bowl,” Quatrano says. Inside, the restaurant itself is as unique as its menu—from handstenciled floor tiles and wall-mounted clocks proclaiming it’s “time for pancakes.” “Breakfast is more than just a routine to get you on your way,” Jacobsen says. pancakesocial.com

W WHILE THEIR NEW HOME WOULD FEATURE a Buckhead address, a couple with two young children knew they wanted their soon-to-be dream home to channel the chic, coastal design qualities of their favorite destinations, Alys Beach and the Hamptons. “They didn’t want a typical house you’d see in Buckhead with white painted brick,” explains interior designer Brian Watford. Instead the couple turned to Watford and architect Yong Pak to create a modern space with strong, yet edited architectural details, a trademark of Alys Beach, combined with the sophisticated breeziness that permeates homes in the Hamptons. “We had to keep asking ourselves, ‘How can we make it feel like you’re at the beach as much as possible, despite being right in the middle of Buckhead,’” muses Watford. The design team delivered on this idea with an airy, open-concept layout complete with 12-foot ceilings. Most rooms open onto the generous outdoor spaces that are tucked along the home’s unique L-shape

structure overlooking a linear, Hamptonsstyle pool. While this makes entertaining a fun indoor-outdoor experience on the ground level, it also offers the wife a serene spot to relax on a custom outdoor hanging bed located on the second-floor master bedroom balcony. Watford knew materials would also play an important role in offering the illusion of a beachside oasis. The kitchen is wrapped in driftwood from floor to ceiling, and all of the inner workings are concealed behind flush cabinetry. “They didn’t want it to look like a kitchen, which is really reminiscent of an Alys Beach aesthetic,” says Watford. “It’s clean and minimal, but warm and bright.” While the home undoubtedly resonates with a modern coastal feel, Watford encouraged an appropriately moodier palette in more intimate spaces. The husband’s home office is enveloped in navy for a cocoonlike effect, and the dining room features a gray cloudlike motif wallcovering. But regardless of a room’s chosen color scheme, unique lighting was an instrumental design component. From the handblown glass pendant in the foyer to a trio of sculptural fixtures in

the breakfast room, the accents become a work of art in the minimalist spaces. “Many people liken hardware as jewelry to a cabinet. Similarly, I think light fixtures are like jewelry to a room,” says Watford. “Generally, furniture is always going to look the same. For example, you can customize a sofa, but in the end, a sofa is a sofa. But there are so many possibilities with light fixtures and it lets you add something unique to the space that not everyone else is going to have.” It’s this commitment to thinking outside the box—from Watford and Pak to landscape architect Rick Anderson—that allows the couple and their children feel transported to the beach amid the bustle of daily life. “It’s beyond what they thought it was going to be,” says Watford. “When I saw the plans of this house for the first time, I was ecstatic. This was a really good one that came along, and I’m really proud to be a part of bringing it to life.” See Resources, Back of Book. 44

AS THE FOUNDER AND CEO of Ansley Atlanta Real Estate, Bonneau Ansley III is privy to some of the city’s most desirable homes. But no matter if it’s the biggest, brightest or most beautiful home on the block, there’s one steadfast piece of wisdom he’ll always impart to clients: When your home hits the 10-year mark, it’s time for a refresh, he advises. And like any great leader, Ansley is in the habit of practicing what he preaches. It was just over a decade ago that Ansley and his wife, Jennifer, sought out architect Charles Heydt to draw up a Dutch Colonial-style home in Buckhead’s Peachtree Battle neighborhood. (Its classical interiors were previously featured in the December 2008 issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles.) But true to principle, the couple began to think about their home’s next phase as they approached this milestone. “If you love your neighbors and location as much as we do, moving wasn’t an option,” says Ansley. “We also have two growing 48

children, so the way we live now looks much different than it did 10 years ago. A lot changes in that time, and it’s important your home reflects that.” So that their family could remain firmly planted in their beloved Buckhead neighborhood, the couple returned to Heydt to map out new possibilities for their home. The fresh plans called for a complete design overhaul and saw the addition of a generous back porch running the length of the house, providing multiple access 50

points to the backyard. Other functional upgrades include dual islands in the kitchen (one for meal prep and baking, the other for dining and homework) and steel windows throughout, which brilliantly flood the newly revamped interiors with natural light. To complete their vision of a lighter, brighter and more modern home, the couple tapped interior designer Kay Douglass, whose design resume includes Ansley Atlanta’s Buckhead offices and the family’s vacation home.

Open Concept While the kitchen boasts a clean, clutterfree look, it’s not short on function. Dual islands offer ample storage as does an adjacent walk-in butler’s pantry that’s complete with a steam oven, microwave and more.

Neat Nook Douglass relocated the breakfast table to this bay window next to the kitchen. To add interest to the airy nook, she selected a raffia light fixture from South of Market.

Douglass employed a minimalist but warm approach, balancing clean lines and sleek surfaces with a playful periwinkle palette and earthy textures. “The nice thing about this renovation is that they’re now surrounded by exterior space. We were careful about making sure all the fabrics flow nicely, because if you open all the doors, it feels like one continuous space,” she says. “The Ansleys are wonderful hosts and we wanted to give them the ultimate space to entertain.” The new outdoor spaces—from a serene loggia to a pool cabana—tick that box. “When evaluating homes, instead of just counting bedrooms and baths, I count places,” notes Ansley. “Ask yourself, ‘What are the cool places and spaces that this home has?’ That’s really where you’ll be living.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Fresh Appeal Plush seating makes the family room a cozy spot to gather. The clover ottomans are from South of Market and the artwork is by Susan Hable Smith. opposite Douglass tempered the traditional paneling of the study with more modern selections from South of Market.

CURRENT APPROACH

Jonathan Savage transforms a former showhouse into a family home that’s both livable and luxurious Written by

Original Appeal Previously the O’More College of Design’s 2017 Designer Show House, this Nashville home was transformed into a cohesive and livable retreat by interior designer Jonathan Savage to suit the needs of its new homeowners.

Cozy & Chic An intimate seating arrangement centered around the fireplace allows the homeowners to spend time with their three grown children in the living room. A Zimmer + Rohde drapery fabric adds softness. The sofas are Hickory Chair, the chairs are Duistt and the iron chandelier is Paul Ferrante through Ainsworth-Noah.

A AFTER TOURING O’More College of Design’s 2017 Designer Show House, Nashville designer Jonathan Savage’s client knew she had found her future home. Tucked away in the woods of the city’s idyllic Você neighborhood—which is built on the property of the late country music star Eddy Arnold and emphasizes sustainability and a connection to nature—the home immediately evokes a stately presence thanks to its entirely black exterior. A longtime supporter of O’More and an admirer of the residence’s architect, Carson Looney, the client wasted no time in making her vision a reality. Before the showhouse even came to a close, she and her husband had purchased the home and enlisted Savage—who designed the dining room of the showhouse, working in the company of designers such as Robert Brown and Amy Morris—to transform the space from showhouse to a family home that felt private, comfortable and livable.

61

Savage.indd 61

4/24/19 1:54 PM

Warm Welcome Savage took color cues from the tones of wood in the kitchen when designing the home’s adjacent living room. A Niermann Weeks breakfast table strategically placed between the living and dining spaces pulls double duty as a chic entry hall table. Savage sourced the Adnet dining chairs on a trip to France, and the bar stools are Century Furniture.

In the Mix left and opposite The dining room, which Savage previously designed when the residence played host to the O’More College of Design’s 2017 Show House, is a dramatic departure from its original incarnation. Now, a coffered wood Phillip Jeffries wallcovering adds texture to the walls, while Hermès’ Dune wallpaper adds a gauche effect to a niche. The table is from the homeowners’ own collection, and the drapery is Seemakrish through Paul+. The chandeliers are Paul Ferrante through Ainsworth-Noah.

Also part of this transformation was, in collaboration with Looney, the build-out of an addition above the garage, which provided for the inclusion of a family room, bathroom and extra bedroom. “They wanted to make it as customized as possible to their wants and needs,” Savage says. “It was fun because we had spent so much time there that we were already familiar with the home. The showhouse was beautiful, and we just came in and added our SAVAGE touch.” To avoid competing with the home’s abundant views of the outdoors and to juxtapose its inky exterior, Savage kept the color palette soft, running shades of greige, beige and taupe throughout and adding interest with elevated finishes and pops of color and pattern that call back to nature. “Every room has a base of greige. It’s a very neutral palette with just a few pops of color here and there,” says the designer. In the living room, for instance, grass-green sofa pillows, dining chairs and barstools stand out against neutral fabrics and layers of drapery, which provide a sense of privacy. “The living room started with a neutral palette based on the existing kitchen and walls, and we accentuated that with the fabrics we chose, picking up the tones of the wood,” 65

“With the setting of the home, you really see nature through the beautiful windows, and we just didn’t want to compete with nature’s palette.” —Jonathan Savage 66

“NOTHING IS FUSSY, BUT IT’S NOT TOO STREAMLINED.” —Jonathan Savage

Savage explains. Around the fireplace, he created a comfortable sitting area, where the couple can spend time with their three adult children. “We made sure the furniture was comfortable, yet that’s the formal space to entertain in,” notes Savage. One of the home’s most significant transformations was in the dining room, which Savage had enveloped in soft “Southern blue” drapery for the showhouse. For the new homeowners, he took a more edgy approach, incorporating two different wallcoverings: a coffered wood by Phillip Jeffries on the walls and a medallion motif by Hermès in the dining room niche. From the room’s existing drapery tracks, Savage suspended a pair of English botanical prints. “We strive to make the client’s home as personal as possible to them, and we were really successful in this room,” Savage says. “And she hired us knowing what we did in the dining room originally, which was funny.” The overall result is a comfortable family home that feels current yet classic. “I feel like it’s today; it’s 2019,” Savage says. “There are traditional values throughout but clean design mixed in. Nothing is fussy, but it’s not too streamlined. It’s somewhere in the middle.” See Resources, Back of Book. 68

LIFE

END NOTE

A SHOWHOUSE SMACKING OF TASTE! SURE, ONE CAN UNCORK a bottle of wine in a motel and plop on the bed with a plastic cup while watching a captivating nighttime drama, but the ambience is relative, and when the toilet roll comes with a plastic cover, one might only be inspired to creep into bed in sock-covered feet and stay there until the break of daylight. Early in my career, I designed hotels for Mickey Mouse, wherein I learned that large-scale commercial design entails specifying wallpapers, fabrics and carpets with flameretardant chemicals that can withstand traffic. Fortunately, I moved on to the über-talented offices of Mariette Himes Gomez and Nancy Braithwaite, where I discovered Belgian linens, wool broadlooms and the power of the one-off object. Thankfully, both interior design and I have continued to evolve. Although I’ve slept in a yurt in the backcountry of Idaho’s Sawtooth Range and hauled wood to heat our homes in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Highlands, North Carolina, I’ve cushioned our beds with high-thread-count sheets and handwoven wool blankets. Give me hardwood, slate, cotton, silk or wool under my feet—anything but polypropylene. Every year I look forward to showhouses—which enforce tenets of good design and harken tasteful trends to come. While many showhouses pique my interest, one of the most inspiring is the Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens. The scale is tremendous and includes a strong roster of talent that leaves me inspired for months. Sometimes it’s the graceful arch of an orchid or the cherry blossom that’s visible from the living room or porch that catches my eye. Other times it’s the color and pattern that encapsulate a room and make me stop for a second glance. But it’s always the architecture and the light—regardless of space or time of day—that makes me admire the power of details. As I write this, I’m camped out in my Atlanta hotel—in my pajamas—planning my showhouse visit. By the time I arrive, I’ll ditch the socks and plastic cup in lieu of heels and pearls. Ikats, chintz or chinoiserie? Who knows what awaits? Regardless, I’ll be in awe and I’ll toast to every participant. 80
