WELCOME
FROM THE EDITOR
serenity now IT’S BEEN A BUSY COUPLE OF MONTHS at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. This past spring alone, our small but mighty team produced the Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens at an enviously private estate in Buckhead; oversaw the professional build-out of a perfectly on-trend kitchen, bath and outdoor living space at Phipps Plaza (see highlights on page 36); and commissioned photography of well-heeled residences across town (and, occasionally, around the Southeast) that have been designed, built and landscaped by the city’s top design professionals. It’s both an honor and a privilege to not only work in tandem with Atlanta’s finest architects, designers, builders, craftsman and landscape architects, but also to capture the current state of their imaginations—and how their thoughtful editing processes influence design decisions, from shape and color to texture and proportion. It’s no small feat to custom-design spaces that not only live well and look aesthetically pleasing, but also are honest expressions of the personalities of both the client and the tradespeople whom they’ve entrusted to execute their vision. Speaking of vision, our July issue, our annual best-baths issue, features a variety of spa-like master bath retreats, each of which is firmly ensconced in the privacy (and personality) of its intrepid owners who dared to marry the purity of function with the perfection of “pretty.” Enjoy these honest exprespersonal sanctuary. The winners of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 2017 BATH OF THE YEAR CONTEST are not
only serene sanctuaries; they’re also sensuous and sophisticated. If there’s one key element each of these four restful respites have in common, it’s that they manage to marry the practical and the pretty for a spa-like result that features all of the comforts of home.

BATHROOMS, BY NATURE, are private respites, but when a client desired a stronger connection to the outdoors, it was Atlanta architect Scott West’s modern design that sought out to strike this delicate balance. An 11-foot glass wall runs floor-to-ceiling across the majority of the master bathroom, providing views of a dramatic stone wall outside. The wall encapsulates a Zen moss garden and creates an intimate space shielded from neighbors. “The central design goal of this bath was to blur the lines between indoors and out and really give the feeling of bathing in the garden,” says West, owner of West Architecture Studio. The walled garden and outdoor shower became an extension of the interior bath. The wall even continues into the adjacent dressing area, which also has floor-to-ceiling windows. The stunning gray Cherokee wall created so much interest that it drove designer Willem Stear’s selections. “Because that is such a beautiful feature, running from inside the dressing room all the way out into the outdoor shower, that said to me, everything else needs to be quiet,” says Stear, owner of Tonic Design Studio. The integration of glass, stone, marble and wood creates a multidimensional yet serene space. A slab of marble installed in a backlit recess beside the freestanding tub acts as a piece of art, West says. Meanwhile, marble around the custom vanity and in the shower and a multipendant chandelier with blown glass add a lustrous glimmer. West’s firm designed a faceted walnut vanity topped with a long, linear integral sink and minimalist details. The walnut and French oak floors lead to the raised plinth for the tub and shower and offer natural rawness and warmth. “A bathroom, more and more, is seen as a respite from the world and a space to get back to nature,” West says. 13

THE CLASSIC SENSIBILITIES OF LIZ WILLIAMS AND BRADLEY HEPPNER SHINE IN A BATHROOM ADDITION WRITTEN BY Lori

INTERIOR DESIGNER LIZ WILLIAMS leaned on tradition and drew inspiration from the landscape when creating this timeless, tranquil bathroom in Buckhead. The master bathroom was added to the 1937 home during a major renovation and needed to exude the same age-old charm as the rest of the home. Hardwood floors, an arched alcove housing a beloved dressing table, and antique china displayed in niches work together to make the bath seem original to the house. “What’s old is new again,” Williams says. “I feel like this looks like it’s been there forever.” The designer took advantage of architect Bradley Heppner’s layout and created a wet area

for the shower. She played off the hexagon tile pattern of older bathrooms, traditionally seen in black-and-white, to create a marble “floor rug.” In doing so, she gave her clients their wish to have the hardwood floors flow from the bedroom into the bathroom. Heppner’s arched nook was designed to house an heirloom table the homeowner has used since childhood, while elegant curves in the Rohl faucets mirror the arch across the way. In lieu of all-white walls, Williams punched up the palette by painting them pale green, yielding a light and airy atmosphere. “We decided that the green and white would keep it crisp and clean and mix well with the marble,” she says. Green Samuel & Sons drapery trim crisply accents café-style white linen curtains in front of a freestanding Avon tub with a classic pedestal base and rolled rim. The same curtains provide privacy for a window above a built-in bench with tidy storage outside the shower. “You really feel like you’re in the trees up there,” she says. “We didn’t want to interrupt the view.”

GEOMETRIC GRACE
DESIGN GALLERIA’S KELLY CARLISLE FOCUSES ON HIGH-IMPACT DETAILS IN A SANDY SPRINGS RENOVATION KELLY CARLISLE HAD AN INSTANT CONNECTION with her client, Sherri Herrick, starting with their similar funky personal style. Once she set foot in Herrick’s Sandy Springs home, she was enthralled by the iron windows in the kitchen. “I’ve always been obsessed with those windows,” says Carlisle, a designer with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath. In the bath, she created a bold plan that added iron windows, among other unconventional details, including a marble and porcelain geometric floor. The idea was “traditional materials with a modern twist,” she says. The bathroom’s redesign removed a wall to incorporate a larger shower with steam capabilities and situated a tub as a peninsula between the weathered antique oak vanities. “We made it significantly larger than the original footprint,” she says. The massive iron window creates the appearance of more space, especially with the addition of vanity mirrors suspended from the ceiling. 20
But the flooring presented a challenge for Carlisle. She had based her design, which featured marble countertops with a waterfall edge, around an existing pattern she had seen, but that flooring wasn’t waterproof. She was determined not to disappoint her client. “I promised it,” Carlisle says. “You want each client to get something unique.” Working with Charlene Rowe at Renaissance Tile & Bath and Walker Zanger, Carlisle created a water-jet floor in a similar design featuring layers of black marble and porcelain that mimics wood, set around a modified marble quatrefoil. The floors complement design choices such as polished-nickel fixtures and hardware from the Matthew Quinn Collection. Carlisle enjoys playing with proportions, as she did with the paneled Calacatta Caldia marble shower walls. “You’ve got to make a statement,” she says.

HAMMERSMITH OVERCOMES SPACE CONSTRAINTS IN A 1930s CRAFTSMAN BUNGALOW WITH A GENTLE MODERN TOUCH WRITTEN BY Lori
Johnston
PHOTOGRAPHED BY Galina
Coada
WARNER MCCONAUGHEY EMBRACED A LOW, sloped space with a design that gave the upstairs master bathroom the feel of a “little cocoon.” A tiled niche frames the new acrylic slipper tub beneath the low ceiling. “The whole space was designed around that tub,” he says. “You’re able to tuck a tub in a place like that and not take up too much room.” The master suite was carved out of attic space, but when McConaughey’s firm, HammerSmith, embarked on a whole-house renovation, they learned they couldn’t raise the roof or add dormers. The windows were original to the historically protected 1930s Druid Hills home. The marble tub niche and curved marble shower wall were careful decisions intended to make the bathroom more comfortable. “By giving it a curved feel, it takes advantage of the fact that it’s tucked up in the attic,” says McConaughey. 24
To better connect the bedroom with the bath, HammerSmith added French doors for a dramatic entry directly into the bathroom. “They’re more like a piece of art there,” he says. HammerSmith also redesigned the suite to create better flow and more useful spaces, including expanded closets. Soft Carrara marble tile, used for the tub niche, shower and floors, and dark stained wood trim continue the theme of Craftsman elegance that runs throughout home. Instead of a stark white box, it’s a gentle space with clean and simple lines, says McConaughey. An espresso finish also sets off the medicine cabinet niche and vanities, which have satin-nickel hardware and handwoven fronts reminiscent of a pie safe. Lately, McConaughey has seen more homeowners opt for smaller bathrooms, but they don’t want to sacrifice beauty, luxury and craftsmanship. “This bathroom is what this house needs. It’s there forever,” he says. “It’s a really timeless project.”

DIMENSIONAL TILE With its Andalucia collection, WALKER ZANGER unveiled a line of geometric tiles with deep reliefs for a three-dimensional effect. The hand-crafted, glazed terracotta tile—inspired by traditional Moorish architecture and Old Spanish ornamentation—was part of a trend that paid attention to showstopping shape and dimension; pictured is Fez in blanco gloss. walkerzanger.com
BLACK IS BACK Black stainless steel appliances were on-trend, praised for both their fingerprint-resistant finish and an overall industry movement toward darker, bolder hues. In partnership with celebrity designer Nate Berkus, LG STUDIO unveiled the black stainless InstaView refrigerator, which features a glass panel that illuminates with two quick knocks, allowing the consumer to see what’s inside—without opening the refrigerator door. lgstudio.com

ANN SACKS revealed innovative inroads in tile design with an Art Deco-inspired collection called Paire. Three distinct patterns of decorative brass inlays—paired with honed stone options in black limestone, white marble and verde marble— allow for dramatic customization options by simply turning the tile to create a bespoke look. Designed for a young family with resale in mind, this master bathroom by Beth Webb exudes both livable luxury and effortless style PHOTOGRAPHY BY Emily

A YOUNG COUPLE LOOKING TO FASHION a light-and-bright palette in their newly constructed home looked to Atlanta interior designer Beth Webb to bring their vision of simple sophistication to fruition. Designed with resale in mind—the husband is a national home builder, so it’s not unusual for their houses to “flip” due to the nature of the products being specified and showcased—Webb set out to complement their clean aesthetic with hardworking neutrals, gleaming finishes and plenty of texture. In the his-and-hers master bathroom, a cast-iron Signature Hardware tub is elegantly framed by windows dressed in linen Roman shades with Mary McDonald for Schumacher’s Tikki tape trim, while walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray provide a serene backdrop. Honed Carrara marble countertops, cabinetry swathed in Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White and lightly stained floors contribute to the space’s airy appeal. “We were always on the same page,” says Webb. “It was easy and effortless.”

SLEEK SOPHISTICATION
The 2017 Luxury Living Show’s kitchen, designed by Steven Gamper of BELL KITCHEN & BATH STUDIOS, balanced clean, contemporary elements, such as matte laminate flat-panel cabinets, with traditional finishes like white oak open shelving for a space that felt modern yet livable. “Atlanta’s market for clean and simple design is on the rise,” says Gamper, “though this simplicity does not always warrant the coldness of modern contemporary.”
Functional Flair
A soft-close, full-extension drawer system features walnut REV-A-SHELF inserts—made with a thin-walled metal side to maximize the use of space—to allow for easy organization and storage of kitchen necessities. Gray, laminate-paneled cabinets not only serve an aesthetic purpose; they were also a practical touch because they don’t show fingerprints, says Gamper.
Minimalist Marvel
WOLF’s M Series built-in, handleless ovens—framed in white oak and suitable for even the most discerning chef—rest underneath three Wolf cooktops for a sleek yet functional cooking space. Meanwhile, durable CAMBRIA countertops featuring an undercut edge stand up to any potential messes.

FEMININE & FRESH Courtney Foster Shearer of BELL KITCHEN & BATH STUDIOS imbued this bath with a mix of modern lines and traditional, more feminine elements, as seen in the curved MTI tub and vanity cabinets, which feature organizational shelving inside. “One trend we are seeing right now is bringing the same function and consideration used in kitchens into baths as well; no need to have jars of cotton balls crowding your vanity top when all can be stored neatly and beautifully inside the cabinetry,” says Shearer.
POP of PRETTY Striking NEOLITH shower walls (“the beauty of marble without any of the upkeep,” says Shearer) add a sense of movement, while tall linen cabinets—painted Benjamin Moore’s Misty Blush and featuring antiqued mirror insets— infuse the bath with a whisper of romance. “The cabinet adds interest and femininity while still allowing the bath to come across as elegant and timeless,” she says. 40

Outdoor Oasis
When designing the outdoor kitchen, DOVE STUDIO KITCHEN & BATH kept entertaining in mind, incorporating durable elements, such as the NEOLITH countertops and NATUREKAST cabinetry, that would stand up to the outdoors. A sink workstation by THE GALLEY features a sixpiece accessory set that provides a place to prep, cook and clean. Meanwhile, a HESTAN built-in grill, double-burner cooktop and refrigerator bring the luxury of an indoor kitchen to the outdoors.
FIRMLY PLANTED
A reclaimed all-weather teak table and chairs from Napa Home & Garden offer an inviting place to enjoy food or conversation, while a HARTSTONE paving grid, artificial turf and lush plantings soften the space. “Sustainable, low-maintenance landscapes with clean lines and less ornamentation are a main design trend that we are seeing,” says Lucinda Bray of Floralis Garden Design.
MODERN COMFORT
Tall barstools from World Market sidle up to a bar area, an ideal spot to sit and converse with a busy cook. “The thought was this would be the area where guests gather to socialize with the cook as well as eat and drink,” says Murdock. “We’re kitchen designers first, so we are able to take our skill set for kitchen designs and parlay that into the outdoor application—a lot of the same philosophies of good design are the same for any kitchen, whether it’s indoor or outdoor.” RESOURCES DESIGN Dove Studio Kitchen & Bath (770) 552-3683; dovestudio.com LANDSCAPING Floralis Garden Design; floralisdesign.com TURF Maxwell Gardens COUNTERTOPS Neolith APPLIANCES Hestan SINK The Galley CABINETRY NatureKast BARSTOOLS World Market TABLE AND CHAIRS Napa Home & Garden

Ryan Gainey was born in the small town of Hartsville, South Carolina, and remained enamored with more intimate towns and gardens for the rest of his life. After receiving his Bachelor of Science from Clemson University, he moved to Atlanta and established his renowned garden on 2 acres in Decatur.

Rausch
He established Ryan Gainey & Company and quickly became an internationally recognized garden designer for both public and private gardens with his philosophy of “discover beauty.” For more than 20 years, Gainey’s magnificent home garden in Decatur was featured on the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s “Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour.” Disney found his gardens so enchanting that The Odd Life of Timothy Green was filmed amid the lush foliage. Gainey’s many projects as an event designer included The Garden of Eden Ball for the Atlanta Botanical Garden; The Swan House Ball for the Atlanta History Center; and other events for the High Museum of Art, The Atlanta Opera and the International Olympic Committee. Additionally, Gainey served on the executive boards of trustees for the Southeastern Flower Show and the Cherokee Garden Library. Known as a great conversationalist, Gainey was loquacious on numerous subjects. “Ryan was challenging in thought and conversation, so it was often like raking the leaves in a tornado,” says friend and photographer Robert Rausch. Although Gainey was communicative, he was also enormously calming and often wore various hats with creatively embellished long robes. “Ryan always had a very peaceful, almost spiritual air about him,” says friend and internationally renowned antiques expert Deanne Levison.

opposite “When asked about his creative process in the natural world and the exploration of original ideas, Ryan always responded ‘why not’?” says Renaissance woman Angie Mosier, a dear friend to Ryan Gainey. “That’s become the mantra for those of us who learned so much from him,” she says. this page Mr. Gainey’s Decatur garden was a perennial staple on the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s Connoisseur’s tour each spring; Disney found the garden so enchanting, it filmed The Odd Life of Timothy Green there.

Expanding
As Gainey’s fame grew, so did his opportunities to reach broader audiences. His work was frequently featured in national shelter and food publications, while his book The Well Placed Weed was made into a sevenpart documentary series on PBS. His lasting imprint was as a visionary for Serenbe. His philosophy that “the house and garden should become one” was fulfilled with Serenbe’s integration of the community formed between home and nature.
Renewal
Tragically, Gainey died while rescuing his beloved dogs from a fire at his second home in Lexington, Georgia, on July 29, 2016. However, his legacy lives large both in his gardens and among his many adoring friends. “His bold and unfailing love for beauty and creativity was inspiring to all, and he pushed us to find our truth,” says Rausch. Through the gardens of both plants and people that Gainey sowed, his legacy will continue to flourish. 45

UMPTUOUS RED VELVET curtains in an Austrian coffeehouse grabbed Lauren Davenport Imber’s eye when she studied abroad as a college student, and everything clicked. “I said, ‘That’s what I want to do. I want to do interior design,’ ” she remembers. Years later, those dramatic drapes inspire her decisions, including statement-making curtains in a historic Brookhaven renovation. Yet unlike the rich velvet that captured her attention in Europe, Davenport Imber’s style steers toward neutral colors accentuated with texture and subtle patterns in the furnishings and fabrics. She calls her style “livable chic.” Working at Jerry Pair at ADAC while pursuing an interior design degree from American InterContinental University in Atlanta (after earning her psychology degree at Ole Miss) introduced her to high-end furnishings and fabrics. She honed her skills at Trente Ashton Interiors, Kim Haire Interiors and Westbrook Interiors before opening Davenport Designs in 2003.

“I like to blend the clean lines, mixed in with some antiques and modern elements,” she says. In Brookhaven, Davenport Imber loved collaborating with builder Matthew Morris and the homeowners to create breezy spaces by removing “black holes” from the previous layout, adding windows and capturing more natural light. Horizontal-striped curtains in the living room, for example, don’t weigh down the space. Her downsizing clients envisioned an airy, uncluttered and comfortable space for entertaining. “The influences of this home were my clients— how they want to live and how they wanted the house to work for them,” Davenport Imber says. She selected Benjamin Moore’s China White as a neutral wall color, which allowed furnishings to stand on their own. The new keeping room’s shiplap, antique horns and framed arrowheads evoke the feel of a French hunting lodge befitting the home’s architectural style, while the designer’s appreciation for the tailored look in transitional design is evident in the pieces she chose for her clients. “My design philosophy is design is only successful if it represents those who live in it,” she says. AROUND TOWN WITH
Naomi Von Habersham FOR YEARS, I RARELY COOKED DINNER FOR MYSELF. Typically, my evening meals were either cooked by the chefs at my favorite neighborhood restaurants or purchased already prepared at Whole Foods, requiring little more than a brief warming up in my oven. But after the I-85 bridge collapse, when a quick trip down the road to pick up dinner turned into an hourlong, angst-ridden saga, I realized that in order to keep my sanity, I was going to have to take matters into my own hands—literally—and start cooking for myself. Yes, thanks to a traffic nightmare, I finally got reacquainted with my kitchen and have learned to love it. That Miele convection oven I purchased a decade ago, the one that had been used mostly for heating up chicken potpies from Whole Foods? Why, it’s amazing! I had no idea that you could roast a chicken so effectively, crisping the skin to perfection while the meat stays succulent. And my super-duper KitchenAid microwave, which once welcomed little more than bags of popcorn, bowls of soup and mugs of room-temperature coffee, has now become my handy-dandy assistant, steaming asparagus to toothsome deliciousness and boiling pasta—quickly—to al dente doneness. I might be 40 years late to the microwave party, but this kitchen convenience seems like a bold new discovery to me. So, too, does my mandoline, which had been gathering dust on a top shelf for ages. Now I’m using it to evenly slice potatoes and vegetables for use in pommes Anna and vegetable tian. What can I say? I’ve become a Julia Child and an Ina Garten rolled into one. Despite my newfound fondness for cooking, I’m not abandoning my love of dining out or prepared food. I’d never do that. But I can say that now that I know my way around the kitchen, I actually enjoy spending time there. After all, what’s the point of having a gleaming, well-appointed kitchen if it never gets used?
By focusing on the little things, we’ve created something big. Something new. Each of our spaces is built from the ground up with a visionary’s spirit and a designers’ eye. It’s an experience that feels stylish, yet efficient. Alluring but purposeful. Every detail is considered to provide just the beautiful essentials. AC Hotels. A New Way To Hotel.

In the living room of this European-inspired Buckhead abode, interior designer BARBARA WESTBROOK was
excited to whisk many of the couple’s favorite travel mementos out of storage and give them pride of place on the coffee-table tableaux. “Their own objects have such beautiful patina and texture,” she says, “so the furniture almost becomes a backdrop for their display.”

“As a designer, I don’t want any room to feel too precious,” interior designer Barbara Westbrook says. “Today, people want to live in every room of the house.” In the living room, seating groups (a mix of custom, Bungalow Classic and B.D. Jeffries pieces) encourage lingering conversation and inviting warmth when family and friends gather.

W WHEN A EUROPEAN COUPLE WHO SPEND their summers in southwest France relocated to Atlanta for the school year, they sought a timeless Buckhead dwelling that would reflect the family of five’s global inspirations, discriminating tastes and exacting specifications. Upon deciding to create such a place from scratch, there was only one architecture firm they trusted implicitly to do the job. Historical Concepts, after all, had fashioned their previous home in the California wine country some 20 years prior. “At the time, no one in the [California] area could design the house he wanted,” says Terry Pylant, the architectural designer who spearheaded the family’s Atlanta project. “He found our work in a magazine and commissioned us from there.” Faithful to his firm’s reputation, Pylant delivered a structure with both presence and lightness. The family’s floor plan features no unnecessary hallways or corridors, facilitating seamless circu-

lation throughout. Axial relationships between rooms—plus the interior and exterior spaces—are exceptionally strong, and because the house is only one room deep throughout, its rooms receive sunshine on both sides. On the exterior, a mix of leaded-glass windows makes an equally sharp statement, while a simple roofline recalls Edwin Lutyens’ famed English designs and additional elements reference classical Philip Shutze structures nearby. “It is always important [to us] to create something that adds to the fabric of the setting, to look as though it has been there for decades and to stand the test of time,” Pylant says. From the precisely set keystone at the entryway (flanked by flickering gas lanterns) to the handsomely engineered ceiling beams and balusters (the homeowner hand-selected the latter in a French foundry to punctuate the three-story staircase), the

As frequent entertainers, the homeowners relish having both casual and formal dining areas. The buffet was one of Westbrook’s finds from Provenance Antiques. “It’s important to add that layer of texture and character that antiques bring to a space,” she says. The dining chairs are from Bungalow Classic, and the iron chandelier is Paul Ferrante through Ainsworth-Noah.

A shining example of the house’s striking architectural design is the kitchen, where traditional transom windows allow extra light at the room’s high points and unfinished wood ceiling beams and custom cabinetry continue along a strong central axis. The barstools are Restoration Hardware, and the smoked-glass ceiling pendants are by Arteriors through Bungalow Classic.

residence is a concert of graceful architecture and impactful but well-edited accents. Considering the balance of restraint and detail used for the home’s shell, it was essential that its interior design display complementary deftness. Pylant praises Barbara Westbrook, who signed on during the design development stage, as the “hero” of this project—a particular honor as it was her first collaboration with Historical Concepts. Beyond her judicious manner of enhancing the neutral palette
(outfitting the home with pale Belgian linen upholstery, for example), the designer also nudged the clients toward details they may not have been amenable to otherwise—such as soft plaster walls and the ornate motif on the library ceiling, which contributes a feminine moment to an otherwise masculine room. “As we looked at historical photographs, we kept seeing these beautiful ceilings on houses of the past that the clients loved,” Westbrook recalls. “It was period details like these that ultimately gave the house its individuality and personality.” 67

this page Pylant, among other Historical Concepts collaborators, took great care to place the locally crafted, leaded-glass windows at heights appropriate for both maximizing light (allowing sunlight to bounce off the ceiling) and ensuring privacy in the master bathroom. Guests feel secluded but can still enjoy the view. Silverleaf chandelier, Circa Lighting. Basket weave floor tiles, Walker Zanger. opposite With the subtle pattern of its custom headboard nearly blending into the soft plaster walls (they have
a slightly mottled effect, which adds more depth, Westbrook notes), the quietude of the master bedroom verges on divine. “I always believe that a bedroom should be a retreat and should be restful,” says Westbrook, who layered lots of tactile textures for the bedclothes, including cotton, linen and faux fur. “The [cove] ceiling is so gorgeous in that room that there’s absolutely no reason to hang art over that headboard. The shape itself becomes decorative,” she adds. Bedside table, Bungalow Classic.
On that note, Westbrook even accessorized the residence almost entirely with items the homeowners had collected along their travels—hand-tooled Moroccan silver, ivory-inlaid objets d’art, old books. “We set out their favorite things on folding tables, then selected and placed them,” she says, “rather than going out to buy everything anew.” The results are collected and instantly classic. Historical Concepts was just as delighted with the outcome, seeing it as a showpiece of sorts in their hometown. “After working on many national projects, it’s wonderful to have something of this caliber in our own backyard,” Pylant says. Considering the manicured landscape and pool pavilion, something tells us the homeowners share that sentiment. See Resources, Back of Book. 68

A beautiful and favorite color-saturated rug from the owner's previous residence was cut to fit the living room, and Weaks echoed its color scheme in the pillow fabrics and accessories. The grandfather clock is a beloved family heirloom.
W WHILE DESIGNERS ARE accustomed to varying levels of participation from clients during the design process, it’s rather unusual for both husband and wife to be happily engaged in almost every detail. “Most couples don’t always work well together when building a house,” says interior designer Carole Weaks with a laugh, “but this was not the case with Beverly and Butch Ellars. They were totally involved and in sync with each other; it really was a joyful, collaborative experience.” Butch, an engineer by training, took on the more technical aspects during the process, while Beverly reveled in the interiors of their Highlands, North Carolina, retreat. The rooms are refined, not rustic, and altogether very comfortable and welcoming. Weaks made sure to include Beverly’s favorite color, red, in every room, sometimes in generous doses and sometimes with a light brushstroke. “It’s wonderful when someone really responds to a particular color because it gives a designer direction. But you don’t want to saturate the rooms with it,” says Weaks. Indeed, there’s something so irresistible about Weaks’ use of red in this home that it seems au courant again. She paired the bold shade with pretty neutrals, unlike the heavy-handed “red rooms” of past decades. The laundry room, wallpapered in a charming red-and-white Designers Guild pattern, brings a lighthearted attitude to the task at hand. The dining room chairs show off a rich red

upholstery, while in the powder bath there are just specks of red in a silver metallic botanical-print wallpaper. Many pieces from the Ellars’ former Highlands home were put to use in new ways. “The foyer is a great example of how you can repurpose pieces,” says Weaks. “The iron console, placed at the end of the space with a more contemporary piece of art instead of a traditional landscape, feels fresh. We also reupholstered many things, as well, and we wanted to find a place for all these lovely, 76
quality pieces.” Sometimes, of course, new pieces are required due to a room’s size and shape. A rectangular dining table simply would not work in the new octagonal room, for instance. And Weaks couldn’t resist adding a few new pillows and other accents into the mix. But here, the old, new and in-between all carry on a meaningful conversation, thanks to a mutual love of classic beauty and, of course, the color red. See Resources, Back of Book.

NATURAL SELECTION
A Kennesaw estate channels the English countryside in the hands of Harrison Design’s lead architect, William Harrison, and interior designer Karen Ferguson WRITTEN BY Jeanne
Lyons Davis
W WHEN DESIGNING THEIR forever home, a nature-loving family of four looked to their Kennesaw property’s backyard for inspiration. But unlike most lawns, their estate straddles a national park that boasts beautiful fauna, expansive green space and grazing wildlife. What it sowed in inspiration was then reaped by the creative team at Harrison Design. Architects William “Bill” Harrison, Rick Hatch and Robbie Pich, along with interior designer Karen Ferguson, began designing the homeowners’ dream domicile in the north Atlanta hamlet in 2009. From the beginning, the family-focused homeowners wanted the sizable space to feel comfortable and inviting—not unapproachable or overly formal—with an equal emphasis on interior and exterior lines of sight. “Our main goal was to focus on all the magnificent views

we could capture,” says Ferguson. “We did this by incorporating large windows throughout the home, some stained dark to draw the eye outside.” Despite its expansive size—a substantial 14,000 square feet, the construction of which was spearheaded by Rick Fierer of Bildon Construction—Ferguson executed a relaxing and comfortable interior that reflected the family’s lifestyle. Everything from fabrics to furniture was chosen with consideration for design and durability, needing to accommodate everything from dogs and children playing with abandon to entertaining family and friends. Many of the textiles throughout the home, which skews toward a natural color palette so as not to compete with its woodsy views, are outdoor fabrics that won’t fade from the
Vaulted ceilings and mahogany details, such as the framed fireplace and windowed doors, define the robust living room that’s filled with elegant yet approachable trimmings. An antique tapestry the homeowners discovered in Paris anchors the room, where Dessin Fournir wingback chairs and Dennis & Leen armchairs welcome visitors to sit and admire the sweeping views.

constant streams of natural night and will resist accidents by pets, kids and overzealous party guests. Ferguson notes that comfort and style went hand in hand as the family selected furnishings for the five-bedroom, four-bathroom home. “They wanted to sit in every chair and sofa before they chose it,” she says. “Comfort was first and foremost a priority.” The warm and welcoming interior furnishings complement the showstopping architectural details throughout the home. Mahogany-trimmed arched windows are a mainstay throughout the palatial property, some equipped with beveled glass windows to catch and bounce light throughout the space. The home’s elegant yet breezy design favors an English estate, as seen in the main floor’s conservatory, located between the dining room and kitchen as a breakfast room of sorts. There is no denying that the dramatic space has some of the best views in the home. The homeowners, who are admirers of the Biltmore and its acclaimed architect Richard Morris Hunt, were inspired by the estate’s arched conservatory, so Harrison and the team designed the conservatory with mahogany arches and Venetian plaster–covered walls. Throughout the rest of the home, where some of the ceilings soar as high as 22 feet, Ferguson found creative ways to prevent the rooms from feeling too austere or cold, from sprinkling in the homeowners’ tapestry collections to wrapping bedrooms with linen wallcoverings. But, says Ferguson, it’s the homeowners who inevitably fill the home with warmth. “The house has an old soul, even though it’s new,” says the designer. “From the antiques to the views, it tells their story.” See Resources, Back of Book.

But instead, he’s the first touch point of your brush with genteel, Southern hospitality—the kind romantic comedies based in the South are ripe with. And, while service with a capital “S” may be paramount on every inch of this 20,000-acre resort property, you’ll find its effect is far from saccharine, particularly at the Montage Palmetto Bluff’s Inn, where the South’s signature charm meets grand, Lowcountry luxury thanks to a $100 million expansion that added 150 rooms and suites, restaurants, a spa, pool and fitness center, completed in September of 2016. Residential touches, from vaulted ceilings and fireplaces to airy verandas with a view, abound, but as with most memorable Southern homes, it’s the setting that truly defines (and determines) the guest’s experience. The Palmetto Bluff community is essentially a centuries-old maritime forest surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront; that rugged natural splendor affords opportunities to explore

South Carolina’s coastal marshland in spades (whether fly-fishing, kayaking or paddle boarding) or from afar (think heels kicked-up with a drink on a screened-in porch). Exploring Palmetto Bluff’s endless waterways, in fact, is what the resort was designed for, whether inshore or offshore, from the saltwater or freshwater. Paddling a canoe through the lagoon, for instance, will likely reward you with a glimpse of a stoic blue heron; biking the trails from beneath the property’s ancient live oaks grants access to gems like Wilson Village’s intimately scaled chapel, designed by Georgia architecture firm Historical Concepts, or the three-tiered treehouse for children playfully constructed around a live oak. Beyond the resort’s bountiful beauty (be it raw or man-made), contributing to its grand sense of place are gems such as the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course on May River; intimate restaurants such as the Inn’s Jessamine; and first-class wellness centers like Spa Montage. Like a tall, cold glass of iced tea, this is one resort that’s served well by its supporting sweet spots. palmettobluff.com

The Ranch at Rock Creek offers outdoor activities and indoor luxuries to match the rugged beauty of Montana’s Big Sky Country WRITTEN BY

Carolyn O’Neil
Refined Ranch Life If the great American West is calling your inner cowpoke, set off for majestic Montana. When you hang your hat at The Ranch at Rock Creek, Western life happily includes the luxury of gourmet grub and a sumptuous spa. Set on 6,600 acres, The Ranch at Rock Creek welcomes guests with rustic elegance. A member of Relais & Châteaux and National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World, The Ranch is named for Rock Creek, the trout stream that flows through the property. With 29 accommodations, from one-room suites to five-bedroom log homes, The Ranch is spacious yet intimate. Western-chic tented cabins set along the creek feature footed bathtubs, outdoor fire pits and the peaceful sounds of rushing water and the wind rustling through the cottonwood trees. Hop on a mountain bike, and cruise to the Buckle Barn for yoga or to breakfast in the Granite Lodge main house. Or call for a ranch vehicle to give you a lift. This is “glamping,” not camping. You can truly relax knowing that The Ranch is an all-inclusive property where meals, beverages

and outdoor activities are part of your stay. Adventures range from guided mountain hikes and fly-fishing to trail riding, a 3D archery course, and trap and skeet shooting. Unplug at the Granite Spa with a full menu of treatments and a naturally sourced “bloomto-bottle” skin care line created by Atlantabased Little Barn Apothecary.
Ranch to Table A far cry from chuck wagon fare, The Ranch’s sophisticated menu stars Montana-raised beef, bison and lamb as well as locally grown organic produce. Executive chef Josh Drage says, “Our ranch cuisine is a balance of hearty fare to get you back out on a horse and lighter dishes you may crave for dinner.” How about rainbow trout with beluga lentils or bison country-fried steak with Montanagrown farro? The wine cellar provides pairings and celebratory splurges. Local craft brews and spirits, such as Whyte Laydie gin from Montgomery Distillery in Missoula, fill out the bar. Lounge by the lodge fire for a quiet nightcap, or head to the Silver Dollar Saloon to play billiards or trade boots for bowling shoes. Then it’s lights out to rest up for another day at The Ranch, but not before you marvel at the brilliant stars that light up the night in Big Sky Country. theranchatrockcreek.com

MIAMI BEACH REFRESH Who among us doesn’t harbor somewhat of a postcard image of the Miami Beach good life? WRITTEN BY Gina

Christman
YOU KNOW, THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE, YEARround sunshine and endless beaches—all wrapped up in an “I want to be there doing that” allure. Miami Beach, at its heart, is known for its glitzy hotels and jet-set nightlife, but nestled among those is one magnificent gem of a place that is more about respite and wellness than dancing into the night. The Palms Hotel & Spa—a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts—is all about luxury, to be sure, but it is luxury with a conscience. The hotel has adopted an “Inspired by Nature” program whereby every aspect of the property and staff adhere to a culture of sustainability and environmental friendliness, winning the hotel numerous awards, including a coveted Green Key rating in 2013. Originally opening in 1939 as the Sea Isle Hotel and undergoing a couple of renovations over the decades, The Palms Hotel & Spa (so named in 2010) still bears subtle touches of the golden era of Art Deco. The lobby, with its massive columns and open-air atmosphere, feels like a throwback to the 30s. Palm trees and drowsy wicker-andrattan fans put you into an imaginary Old Havana movie set. Guestrooms are spaciously modern with huge windows providing beautiful city, garden or ocean views.

Essensia, the hotel’s restaurant, leads the charge in Miami Beach with its farm-to-table philosophy and is one of the very few hotels with an on-site organic garden. The garden produces herbs and seasonal produce that are picked fresh daily and used in recipes and in signature cocktails, too. For her seasonal menus, Chef Julie Frans expertly fuses South Florida’s cultural influences and fresh, abundant ingredients. She is well known to the regional farmers and food artisans as a champion of fresh local vegetables and fruit sourcing and light-handed, healthful preparation. In keeping with the hotel’s pledge to sustainability, seafood comes from a regenerative source, fish is line-caught, meats and poultry are grass-fed and natural (organic where possible) and even the wine list is 100% organic or biodynamic. For some delicious fun, dive into one of the signature cocktails listed on the “Garden-to-Glass” menu at the tropical indoor, outdoor Essensia Lounge. Bartenders can certainly put an artful twist on classic favorites, too, but why not go a little off-the-grid? Life is an adventure, after all. All this healthy eating commands a visit to The Palms Spa—an Aveda luxury spa influenced by “the greater web of life and with nature” and lead with ancient Ayurvedic holistic philosophies, aromatherapy and healing touch. Signature treatments include an invigorating HydroCapsule with a Vichy shower and steam that follows a Dead Sea salt scrub down (note: do this before sunbathing!) followed by a personalized Elemental Nature Massage to re-set your internal balance. Aveda products, exclusively used in the Spa and also as guestroom amenities, are 90% organic. For a sampling of the best this resort has to offer, check out the Palms & Paradise package, which includes 2-night accommodations for two, choice of Tiki Cabana or Beach Cabanita rental for two days, discounts on Tiki Bar food and beverage, and $50 spa credit. thepalmshotel.com

Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni: The good life on Lake Como WRITTEN BY Ann

N. Yungmeyer
ROMANCE, TRADITION, ELEGANCE. All tell the story of Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, frequented by European nobility, industrial tycoons and countless illustrious guests throughout its colorful history. The 19th-century hotel sits on a lush promontory on Lake Como in northern Italy, with panoramic views and a backdrop of the Swiss Alps. Outside the stately entrance gates, the medieval town of Bellagio oozes charm and beckons one to stroll its storybook cobbled paths. While Bellagio is the “pearl of Lake Como,” Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a jewel in the realm of elegant retreats and the only five-star hotel in town. Built as a private home for an aristocratic Milanese family, the villa became a luxury hotel in 1873, originally named Grand Hotel Bellagio. Featuring frescoed ceilings, marble staircases and gilded trim, it was a “holiday home” for guests who would arrive by boat with an entourage of servants and friends. After weathering both world wars (and serving as a barracks, with troops burning parquet floors as firewood), the hotel has been exquisitely restored to its neoclassical glory by its owners of 99 years, the Bucher family. The current proprietor, Gianfranco Bucher, speaks of painstaking

Salons are formal yet warmly inviting, adorned with period antiques, original art and Murano crystal chandeliers. Each of the 95 guest rooms and suites is uniquely furnished. Palatial and airy, many have 15- to 18-foot ceilings and views that make one eager to throw open the shutters and sash. The spa features an indoor waterfall pool, while the fitness center offers Technogym cardio equipment, Pilates, squash, tennis, and a Turkish bath. Hotel restaurant options include casual Italian fare or fine dining at the Michelinstarred Mistral, featuring molecular cuisine by esteemed chef/innovator Ettore Bocchia. The dolce vita vibe carries on at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. All the while, the Bucher family keeps a personal touch, attending to each guest’s luxury experience. Westward, Whoa!
I
WAS ENRAPTURED WHEN MARGUERITE YORK read Charlotte’s Web to us in the second grade at Trinity School with a performance that would rival any by Meryl Streep. I was in equal awe at Charlotte’s grace in the face of death—and in Mrs. York’s tearful despondence as she struggled to relay Charlotte’s fate to the class. Mrs. York (and yes, Charlotte) inspired my lifelong love of reading that has since evolved into an abundant personal library. I’m not the only Southerner who appreciates a well-appointed, diverse library filled with books with broken spines and soft pages from the touch of generations. In today’s digital world, a home library might be considered the ultimate luxury, but, like many Atlantans, I see it as a revered room, a place reserved for treasured books, quiet conversations and reflection. It’s a place of intellectual intimacy—the kind that is shared between friends and coworkers as easily as it is between family members. Libraries preserve history while concurrently sparking imagination; they convey a message of sophisticated intelligence. Sadly, the library has become a casualty not unlike formal
112
dining rooms in today’s homes—in the South or in Los Angeles. Interiors now feature more pillows and geodes than books. In fact, I’ve rarely seen any books in Los Angeles homes. If any exist, they’re usually oversized picture books related to travel or possibly a decorating book that has been autographed by the designer but never opened. My perception of the dearth of books in LA is twofold: First, the ghastly cost of living causes people to make strategic decisions about space allocation. As in, “Why would anyone waste space on a library instead of a Louboutin closet?” The second is that books in LA serve only one purpose: as potential subject matter for movies. Each week, the revered Hollywood Reporter announces books available for movie options. “Why read when you can watch?” As a writer for shelter publications, I’m keenly attuned to the smallest details of a home, and I’m partial to those who revel in the written word. Atlantans, pour a Scotch or brew a cup of tea, and settle into a deep chair with a beloved book and a furry pet at your feet. I’ll toast you from the Left Coast with Charlotte’s Web in hand and a tear in my eye.
