PORTRAIT BY ERICA GEORGE DINES
“THE COBBLER’S CHILDREN HAVE NO SHOES” is a phrase I often hear spouted from professionals across the design industry. Architects, interior designers and craftsmen alike are so busy helping their clients, it’s hard to find the time and energy to pay attention to their own homes. (Alas, it’s also a sentiment this magazine editor—and a handful of design-minded colleagues— can sympathize with.) Our August issue, however, takes exception to that expression. This month, you’ll find homes and gardens lovingly cultivated over time by some of our city’s top creatives. And the results could not be more inspiring. From a sprawling, farm-like retreat just outside the city (page 102) with winding pathways and wisteria-encased arbors to two in-town abodes as fresh, fun and fabulous as its always-on-trend owners, it is indeed an honor to provide such an authentic reflection of our city’s creative classes. Soon, you’ll find these images—and thousands more—on our newly revamped website, atlantahomesmag.com—a virtual pinner’s paradise. Until then, enjoy this issue’s personification of the ultimate in personal style.

classical, elegant and timeless. I have seen homes filled with Althorp Living History pieces, and others where a few accent items from the collection lend an easy dignity to a room ... I also like to think that people who choose to purchase an Althorp piece are acquiring an instant heirloom for their family. PIECES DRAW FROM STYLES OF THE 17TH, 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES. HOW MUCH OF THESE ATTRIBUTES WERE CULLED FROM ALTHORP’S ORIGINAL FURNITURE? I would say that about 50 percent of the pieces in the range are direct copies. The rest are heavily inspired by designs in the house. When Paul Maitland-Smith, the owner of Theodore Alexander at the time this whole idea started, went looking round the property with his design team, he came back with 10,000 images of things in Althorp that he wanted to work with. WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO INCORPORATE A TIMELESS SENSE OF HISTORY INTO HIS OR HER OWN HOME? Enjoy the piece. Don’t treat it as some sort of untouchable object, but use it and have fun with it. I do the same—we have a blanket chest at Althorp that used to belong to some of George Washington’s ancestors. Our major museum’s longtime leader, Michael E. Shapiro, reflects on Atlanta’s major leaps forward—and his sincerest hopes for its artistic future. WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY Kate Abney HIGH MUSEUM OF ART DIRECTOR MICHAEL E. SHAPIRO—a Harvard-educated talent who specializes in 19th- and 20th-century painting and sculpture—steps down at the end of July after nearly two decades of leadership at the acclaimed Atlanta institution. Shapiro’s lengthy list of aquisitions, collaborations and accomplishments—including a new publication, Masterpieces for Atlanta, which highlights selected works acquired during his tenure—speak to the strength of his direction. “Dramatically increasing the quality of [The High’s] permanent collection has been the single most satisfying thing,” Shapiro notes. He approves of the recent movement of art into more public, interactive spaces (think spring’s Los Trompos), but without sacrificing traditional patronage and strong leadership. “Works of art give back what the spectator brings to them,” he affirms. “Whether it’s a Monet or a Jasper Johns, an African sculpture or a 21st-century design object, these are part of what I call the patrimony of Atlanta, and it should be a permanent legacy for all to enjoy.” Shapiro, who will continue on as a board member, reflects on the importance of endowments (the High experienced a 30 percent increase during his tenure), and is quick to applaud colleagues and benefactors like John Wieland and Margaretta Taylor, whose generosity keeps the museum’s fate in their hands. Those hands, as well as our own, are giving this departing director one gigantic round of applause. 12

Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with reďŹ ned cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. STATE OF THE
ARTS
FUTURE for FOLK Summerville’s PARADISE
GARDEN, one of Georgia’s
quirkiest attractions, has returned to its former glory—thanks to its new executive director, Jordan Poole. Offbeat but undeniably charming, Paradise Garden was famously fashioned by the late folk artist icon HOWARD
FINSTER starting in
1951. Often described as “the grandfather of modern folk art” and “the Andy Warhol of the South,” Finster’s counted an invitation to the 1984 Venice Biennale, a cameo in R.E.M.’s debut music video and the cover for the Talking Heads album Little Creatures among his claims to fame. After the visionary’s 2001 passing, his beloved homestead fell into progressive bouts of disrepair. Poole, who previously served as the manager of restoration for George Washington’s Mount Vernon, then the manager of field services for the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s “Places in Peril” initiative, proved more than up to the task of Paradise Garden's revival. And, since Poole’s arrival in 2011, he’s spearheaded more than $225,000 worth of restorations, financed by a grant from the New York-based Educational Foundation of

America. Recent efforts have unearthed nearly 25 percent more of the garden’s mosaic sidewalks, plus the resurrection of buildings that had all but succombed to the swamps—now newly reinforced and conveniently relocated so that visitors can wander through. “We work very hard to have what we call the artist’s hand in place,” Poole explains. That “artist’s hand” is also apparent within the site’s campy, Summer Loftin-designed artist-inresidence cottage, which guests can reserve, via Airbnb, perhaps before rising to stroll the gardens at dawn (even more

ITS DIFFICULT TO DIGEST WHAT WONDERROOT co-founder and Atlanta software phenom Alex West has achieved with ARTCLOUD (available by both web and iPhone app) since 2013. The gallery-management platform has already connected artists, art dealers and art buyers from Brazil to France in a manner never before possible—while providing them with business-streamlining management tools like sales reports, invoices, accounting and more. Local galleries were West’s first stop; Atlanta’s Anne Irwin Fine Art, where West’s wife, Emily, serves as gallery manager, is practically a case study on using the app correctly. Following its success, West launched artcloud’s built-in marketplace, cataloging hundreds of thousands of artworks in one streamlined, intuitive interface. Users can search by color, price, size, type and more to receive results that are—at least over time—tailored to their tastes. For interior designers, the benefits are huge: finding the perfect piece for a project in a fraction of the time, and the option to buy it in a single click. Sounds like the perfect silver lining. artcld.com a t l a n t a h o m e s m a g. c o m AU G . 2 0 1 5

DESIGN IN BLOOM Atlanta’s foremost florists—and one inspired interior designer— fashion art-influenced tributes to the enduring allure of the flower.
REWRITING history
One of the most significant achievements in the Atlanta arts community over the past year is perhaps best appreciated 750 miles from home. In late November, THE
METRO-
POLITAN MUSEUM OF ART received a lofty donation from Atlanta-based SOULS GROWN DEEP, a foundation established in 2010 by controversial local figure William Arnett. Managed by his equally ardent son, Matt, it remains the sole non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, researching, preserving, interpreting, publishing and exhibiting the work of self-taught African American artists. Its private collection numbers 1,200 works (plus field photographs)—
EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE HIGH MUSEUM OF ART revived an iconic exhibit, “Art in Bloom,” after a nearly 20-year hiatus in which 50 of the city’s finest floral aficionados, garden club members and other arrangers interpreted curator-chosen pieces from the High’s permanent collection. Among the talents: Terry Furuta (interpreting Adolph Gottlieb), Holly Bryan (interpreting Jim Dine) and Alex Smith (interpreting Molly Hatch). The showstopper: a MARGARET KIRKLANDdesigned vignette, featuring furnishings from ADAC’s Ainsworth-Noah, Century, Duralee, Jerry Pair, Logan Gardens, Scalamandré, Stark and Travis & Company. “I loved collaborating with two of my favorite Atlanta institutions, the High and ADAC,” says Kirkland. “With a two-story-high drapery backdrop of Duralee botanical fabric framing ADAC’s finest furnishings and antiques, we created a traditional English sitting room—inside Richard Meier’s iconic white atrium.”
produced by more than 150 largely self-taught talents, and has already been celebrated in 35-plus museum exhibitions. Variously described as “folk,” “vernacular” or “outsider,” artists, they most worked with limited materials to produce pieces that chronicled their plight from early slavery and onward through the jagged fight for Civil Rights. This acquisition of 57 paintings, drawings and mixed-media works represents a wide swath of creatives, from mixed-media talent Thornton Dial to the famed quilt-makers of Gee’s Bend. The younger Arnett says it will “help redefine perceptions of 20th-century art”—a task he unapologetically asserts was long overdue. Because to have them hanging in the company of mainstream masterworks is crucial step toward reprioritizing the canon of American art. According to the iconic museum’s director, Thomas P. Campbell, “It embodies the profoundly

deep and textured expression of the African American experience during a complex time in this country’s history and a landmark moment in the evolution of the Met”—making it well worth adding to the itinerary on your next New York visit.

masterpiece With Atlanta construction and development returning to pre-recession heights, it’s an impressive vote of confidence that investors—in particular, the Bahamas-based Tavistock Group, which owns Buckhead’s opulent St. Regis Atlanta— are seeing the value in an elite, chef-driven restaurant brand. Enter ATLAS, the tony Gerry Klaskala- and Christopher Grossman-helmed eatery that opened at the hotel earlier this year. Beyond its top-shelf cuisine, though, we’re fired up over one particular juxtaposition: the lovely layering of high-brow, classic art against the cozy, contemporary backdrop of its Johnson Studio-designed interior. More than two dozen masterworks by noted artists including Chagall, Picasso, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and van Gogh from the LEWIS COLLECTION—one of the most prestigious (and largest)

EVERYTHING IS INSPIRATION FOR ART ADVISOR and interior designer Kristen Cahill, whose career has run the gamut from marketing strategy for Tory Burch and fashion show production for Calvin Klein, to interior design for Peace Design. A far cry from indecisive, Cahill’s broad swath of experiences has helped make her an expert in industries that naturally inform each other. “When you’re passionate about aesthetics, it’s never just one category,” says Cahill, posing in a client’s home with a pair of Paul Lange photographs. It’s this big-picture thinking that influences each of her projects. Cahill also attends art fairs and lectures to court fresh talents; after connecting with performance artist Nick Cave at Art Basel and consulting with fellow FLUX PROJECTS board members, she helped cajole him to Atlanta for a three-day “soundsuit” production at Ponce City Market in April, where he collaborated with local choreographer T.L. Lang on two performance pieces—one high-energy, the other somber—that collectively became the most talked-about event of the season. Now, Cahill is working with Flux Night curator Nato Thompson on an experimental event on October 3. 16

INTO the WOOD
An Atlanta art maven’s ethereal new Midtown locale is the ‘white box authority’ to her longtime Castleberry Hill ‘ laboratory.’
ON A SUNNY FRIDAY AFTERNOON IN MIDTOWN, AH&L corralled longtime pals MARCIA WOOD and ROBERT BURKE KENNEDY for gin drinks and spunky conversations around the pair’s complementary creative pursuits. Longtime art dealer and Flux Projects board member Marcia Wood has not only remained one of the city’s most successful gallerists over the past 25 years; today she’s stronger than ever. When Wood opened a second location of her eponymous gallery in the former home of Solomon Projects—at the intersection of Cooledge Ave. and Monroe Drive— this spring, it was in response to rapid recent growth in the area adjacent to The BeltLine trail and Piedmont Park. (In fact, she recommends a large lot behind Park Tavern if you’re ever in want of a parking spot). To fête the opening of her pristine showcase space earlier this spring, Wood presented a designer preview hosted by Kennedy, a ceramicist and selfdescribed “lampist” best known for his line of lighting, Coalition Society (which is available locally at Atlanta MADE). “He has deep connections in the designer community. It was an exciting inaugural moment for the gallery,” says Wood of her friend, whom she first met when he was working at another upscale Atlanta gallery. (The artisan and his 16-year-old Italian greyhound, Edu, have been fixtures at her Castleberry Hill gallery for years.) Wood’s recent growth into two spaces allows her to straddle the commercial and non-commercial realms while becoming more accessible to tonier audiences, including interior designers. “Midtown is the anchor, authority and classic white box where I’ll have my gallery hours and exhibitions will rotate,” she says. “I see Castleberry as the laboratory and archive for private viewing, crazy installations, special appointments and a sense of adventure.” marciawoodgallery.com
WESTSIDE win
As far as blank canvases go, few real estate options could have topped the 3,400-square-foot former retail space gallerist GREGG
IRBY scored off Huff Road earlier this year. Having begun her business as a gradu-
ate student, the fierce proponent of contemporary up-and-comers previously spent eight years in a small shop behind Buckhead’s Sardis church, watching both her fan base and operating hours grow leaps and bounds. Now touting triple that space, her gallery affords welcome breathing room to curious new collectors, while also giving “designers plenty of room to spread out their blueprints, fabric swatches and paint chips,” says Irby. Best known for carrying colorful, jubilant and affordable abstracts, her roster runs the gamut from Erin McIntosh and Jessica Swift to Eva Magill Oliver and Michelle Armas—all of whom have bolstered their fan bases thanks to Irby’s efforts. So much so that increasing numbers of Northeastern customers are discovering Irby’s artists online. “We now have a whole room dedicated to shipping,” she says. And despite its lofty dimensions, it’s still a gallery you’ll love to get lost in. greggirbygallery.com

WHEN PHOTOGRAPHER JIM FISCUS and his wife, Kimberly, made plans to renovate their Athens, Georgia, home—originally a Plantation Plain–style house with dark interiors and a cramped layout—they turned to family friend and designer Tami Ramsay of design firm Cloth & Kind for guidance. Their mission: to create a bright, open gathering place for their young family, without sacrificing the existing structure’s sense of history. “We wanted to add a contemporary element to the house without destroying its historic integrity,” says Jim, a professional photographer whose frequent career travels make time at home with Kimberly and his children, particularly precious. “The challenge was how to make those two sections flow together so it wasn’t a shocking difference.” To add additional square footage and create a bright, airy space, they incorporated a new addition onto the back of the existing house, which now encompasses a spacious deck, kitchen and living area. “We weren’t trying to re-create the old,” says Ramsay. “The goal was really to blow out the back with this modern addition and add tremendous amounts of natural light.” Sliding doors and an expansive wall of windows off the kitchen create a seamless flow from the deck to the newly combined kitchen/living area, where a roomy island and communal bar stools cater to the family’s penchant for entertaining. “It allows for family and friends to sit and congregate,” says Ramsay. “It’s a great gathering place, and totally suited to them.” To that end, the designer incorporated intimate groupings of furniture throughout the house that are personal to the couple, such as mud cloth chairs and a rug picked up on a cross-country trip, to speak to the Fiscuses’ laid-back aesthetic. “We made a lifestyle choice to be here,” says Jim. “We wanted open space where kids could run around. This is a place I can return to from photoshoots to raise my family and live somewhere that’s beautiful.”

HIGH SPIRITS JIM CHASTEEN AND CHARLIE THOMPSON hope to open the new AMERICAN SPIRIT WHISKEY DISTILLERY in the former Mason Murer Fine Art by the end of the year. The pair is spending $5 million to acquire the 58,000-square-foot Buckhead building, build out the distillery—which will total about 6,500 square feet—and make over the event space. Novare Events operates the new Stave Room, a 15,300-square-foot space with views into the distillery, for an ultra-unique setting. Rustic wood elements, including pieces of barrels, play into the design of the event space. American Spirit, based in Atlanta, is using a production facility in Charleston. When operations are moved to Atlanta, the vast majority of production will be dedicated to aged products, such as bourbon and brandy, plus another whiskey.

OCCUPANCY AT ADAC (ATLANTA DECORATIVE ARTS CENTER) is up to 93 percent, and the Buckhead property has bounced back from a dip in occupancy during the recession. R HUGHES, among the new tenants, made the move this summer from the Westside Provisions District to a 9,000-square-foot ADAC showroom. TAYLOR BURKE HOME and UP COUNTRY HOME have followed suit and plan to open in ADAC this fall, when MCALPINE BOOTH & FERRIER INTERIORS is set to move from ADAC West into the main building with MCALPINE TANKERSLEY ARCHITECTURE.

Naomi Von Habersham FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES, I have chosen not to while away the long, lazy days of summer by reading. I’m slightly embarrassed to admit this because for years I was a dedicated summertime reader. But this year, Roku, the streaming television player, came into my life, and I’ve rarely turned off the TV since. I never used to be a fan of television. Reality shows left me feeling depressed about how low our society has sunk, while news channels, with their anchors who love to talk over one another left me reaching for the earplugs. The only show I ever cared much about was Masterpiece Theatre, although reruns of Designing Women and The Mary Tyler Moore Show were always welcome in my home, too. Needless to say, it was reading, not television, that lulled me to sleep at night. But streaming television has changed all of that. Now I have hundreds of channels to choose from. I’m addicted to Acorn TV, which allows me to watch Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, not to mention Miss Fisher, too. Then there’s Netflix, with its binge-worthy lineup that includes House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, and the new Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin series, Grace and Frankie. I recently spent an entire Sunday watching every single episode of that show—and not once during the day did I feel like a sloth. Whenever I want, I can watch movies from the 1930s, reruns of old Westerns, news channels, music channels, documentaries and anything else my heart desires. It’s gotten so that I can’t wait to get home at the end of the day and treat myself to an hour or two (or maybe even three) of Roku. But as wonderful as Roku is, I’m starting to come to the conclusion that overindulging in streaming television might not be very intellectually nourishing … which is why I am now making an effort to balance my television diet with some light reading. After all, man can’t survive on treats—or streaming television—alone!

From shareable plates to a pintxo bar, Cooks & Soldiers offers a playful take on Spanish-style cuisine.
The husband-and-wife team behind Chai Pani are bringing a new Indian street food concept, BOTI, to Ponce City Market’s Central Food Hall this fall. Inspired by the casual atmosphere of open-air Indian street cafés, Boti’s menu will highlight skewered meats—such as skirt steak, chicken tikka and lamb seekh—cooked over an open flame and served with traditional flatbread. The restaurant will also offer specialty kebabs and signature drinks such as lassi shakes, keg and bottled cocktails, and local beers.
poncecitymarket.com YEBO is now offering another reason to love Sunday brunch with its new bottle service brunch, where diners may enjoy live entertainment and refreshments, including Veuve Clicquot brut and rosé and Belvedere vodka, delivered directly to the table. Chef Philippe Haddad will also serve fresh French-inspired brunch plates with a South African twist, including brioche French toast,

VERANDA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF CLINT SMITH’S WITTY AND WISE BOOK, THE ROMANCE OF FLOWERS, PAYS HOMAGE TO FLORALS, THEIR APPROACHABLE AND GRACEFUL USE IN DESIGN AND THE TRENDS IN HOW WE ARRANGE THEM. “THIS IS NOT A FLOWER BOOK,” SAYS SMITH, “BUT A BOOK ABOUT FLOWERS IN OUR LIVES AND IN OUR HOMES. INSPIRATION GUARANTEED; NO GREEN THUMB REQUIRED.”
WHY A BOOK ON FLOWERS? Flowers have been a part of VERANDA’s DNA since its inception. Founder and longtime editor in chief Lisa Newsom presented artful floral designs with the same prestige given to the most beautiful houses. She treated arrangements as works of art with lush full bleed photographs. The book is anecdotal in nature: it speaks reflectively about the important role of flowers in our culture. CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE? You might not realize it, but flowers are everywhere. They’re printed on fabrics, they show up in songs and lyrics, in books and poems. Each flower has a personality and a language which has translated into the rich symbolism of our speech and in all of the markers and journeys in our lives. That is the exploration undertaken in these pages, that and the spaces and places we arrange for our flowers. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM WRITING THE BOOK? For the most part, cut flowers aren’t as delicate as you think; with a little preparation and proper care, you can often have blooms for a week. Also, it’s the basic simplicity of floral design that has struck me: all you need is water and a vessel to hold them. Flowers are so very approachable in design.
CLINT SMITH VERANDA’s editor in chief (and former longtime editor of AH&L) is the featured speaker at the 2015 Showhouse. His passion: the dazzling second-life of flowers—from field to vase— and a journalistic journey through the trends in floral design.
YOU’VE MENTIONED THE LUSH PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE JOURNALISTIC AND HISTORICAL APPROACH YOU’VE TAKEN. IS THIS ALSO A PERSONAL STORY? I was born in the Rose Capital of America: Tyler, Texas, so yes, the intoxicating sights and aromas of my youth are ever there. But as a journalist, chronicling the life of the presentation of flowers in each millenium, following trends in each modern decade, the subject of flowers continues to be a most alluring one for me. After all, who doesn't like flowers?

HONORARY DESIGNERS LETTER FROM THE DESIGNER LIAISON Welcome to the 2015 Cashiers Designer Showhouse! I am so pleased to welcome you to the 2015 Cashiers Designer Showhouse! We are looking forward to your visit to yet another beautiful Cashiers home reflecting the charm of our stunningly beautiful mountain community. Over the years, I have met and worked with so many fine people, special chairmen and talented designers and their crews. Each year is exceptional, but this beautiful home is one of my favorites. For our 18th consecutive showhouse, we are privileged to open the doors of The Goodman Cottage! National, regional and area interior and landscape designers have spent the better part of the summer reimagining this beautiful home and grounds to bring you a glimpse of the graciousness of the traditional Southern mountain lifestyle. It simply takes a “mountain of folks” to create this magic every year and we are just so very pleased you are joining us at Wade for our 18th year!

Honorary Area Designer ANN SHERRILL , a designer with an eye for perfect balance and an absolute ability to create rooms that are at once welcoming and encompassing, is the Showhouse’s 2015 Honorary Area Designer. Sherrill has participated in The Cashiers Designer Showhouse since its inception in 1998, and her rooms are invariably crowd favorites—whether a porch, a dining room or an entry hall. Consistently detailed and balanced, Ann’s designs continue to reflect the iconic Cashiers style of mountain living through engaging furniture, beautiful fabrics and warm colors. Sherrill and her husband, Rody, are the creative force and management team behind Rusticks, one of Cashiers’ most beloved and dependable sources of unique mountain furnishings, European antiques and perfect accessories.
Honorary Regional Designer Active in the world of design for more than 25 years, CAROLE WEAKS has developed a solid following throughout the Southeast and beyond. A recipient of Southeast Designer of the Year as well as ASID Design Excellence awards, Weaks is appreciated for her innate sense of color and scale as well as her ability to casually and effortlessly blend antique and period pieces with contemporay lines. The 2015 Showhouse will be her sixth continuous year as a participant—and one that our patrons depend on for a beautifully designed and detailed room. In designing the Carolina Porch this year, Weaks remarked, “I have to admit that I’m never happier than when I’m in the North Carolina mountains helping someone make their home the perfect getaway! Designing a mountain home takes on a life of its own, and knowing how to get the right feel without overdoing it can be as simple as knowing when to stop. Afer all, what’s prettier than what Mother Nature has given us?”

LETTER FROM THE CASHIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY CHAIR Eighteen years ago, a group of dedicated individuals planned the first Cashiers Designer Showhouse. Thus, funds were made available to continue preservation of the 1850s Mordecai Zachary House and to support the operation of the Cashiers Historical Society. Ten years ago, I delightfully became involved with the organization and the Cashiers Designer Showhouse. Each Showhouse has been unique, with wonderful recollections of the settings, homes, designers, events and participants. As you are aware, this endeavor is not just about beautifully decorated houses by extremely talented designers, but it is also about experiencing wonderful people in a lovely setting—it is all who participate who make the difference. As Chairman of the Cashiers Historical Society, I sincerely thank you for your support of the Showhouse, the revenue of which allows Historic Cashiers to continue collecting and preserving the history of this extraordinary section of Western North Carolina. I encourage you to take the time to visit the Zachary House and grounds and the other historic sites in Cashiers Valley while enjoying the Showhouse experience. We look forward to seeing you at the Cashiers Designer Showhouse 2015 and thank you so much for joining us in safeguarding our heritage through education and preservation.

Bungalow Classic proprietors Courtney and Randy Tilinski may have filled their Memorial Park cottage with mostly creamy rooms, but the dining room is an evident exception. Moodiness, but also sheen, comes from the aubergine arrowroot wall cloth by Phillip Jeffries, which the pair sourced through Grizzel and Mann. A darkmetal drum pendant from Arteriors, a pair of antique teak shutters and a painted-finish dining table serve as punctuation points. The window treatments are Feather Jet by Atlanta artisan Clay McLaurin.

WHEN BUNGALOW CLASSIC proprietors Courtney and Randy Tilinski set out to create their charming Memorial Park cottage, it was a true labor of love. Though it perfectly embodies their timeless taste today, the 1950s residence was a royal wreck when the couple found it 13 years ago, having sat virtually untouched since the ’70s. Randy initially balked at its condition, but he loved the loftiness of the wooded lot and its proximity to their newly opened Westside
76
shop, while Courtney saw beauty beneath the clutter. Three years after slugging through a laborious cleanup process on their own, the couple called Atlanta architect William B. Litchfield for the real work, beginning a design collaboration Courtney describes as “a match made in heaven.” Renovations, which began with cedar shake shingles on the exterior, were designed to defer to, rather than compete with, the

lamps, a zinc-topped coffee table, reproduction library stands and rustic artwork retrieved from a French château serve as the room’s biggest dialoguesparkers. The beadedwood chandeliers are from Arteriors.

neighborhood’s prevailing aesthetic. Expanding the footprint outward instead of upward, they still managed to stagger several of the ceiling heights, creating a pleasing rhythm from room to room. The living room benefited most from this dramatic treatment, its previously long, aperture-like proportions now soaring to a steep pitch, framed neatly with rustic wood beams. Once-narrow hallways were expanded by an entire foot, establishing a breezy passage while maximizing sight lines from the front to the back of the house. Wooden wall paneling and lovely windows—loads of them—reflect further hallmarks of Litchfield’s 78
handiwork, adding architectural character as they brighten dark corners. “There’s a New England charm to it, but also a California lightness,” Randy says of the residence. To enhance every detail, the Tilinskis executed a monochromatic palette Randy compares to “coffee and cream.” The serene, neutral scheme is perfectly suited to their busy lifestyle, which often includes working overtime. “We call it our big hotel suite,” Courtney adds with a laugh. It’s such a simple, efficient little house ... with everything in its place.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, the duo’s decorating was also dialed

back, incorporating pieces that are pretty but not precious—slipcovered linen upholstery, statement-making lamps, organic textures—reflecting the same spirit of their beloved Atlanta boutique. “We bought a lot of things with the intention of putting them in the store, but we fell in love with them so much, we took them home with us,” Randy says. The antique Belgian bank vault, the Oly 80
armoire, the weathered rabbit statuary on the dining table and even the curious eel baskets have followed the pair from home to home. Ultimately, it’s their intuitive approach that makes the Tilinskis’ expertly executed design decisions appear so effortless; they see beyond the trends, choosing items that become not just current obsessions but bona fide classics. AFTER FIVE YEARS OF LIVING THE HIGH LIFE IN THE SOVEREIGN—a towering residence that soars over the Buckhead skyline—Kevin and Lee Kleinhelter discovered that the grass might just be greener in Brookwood Hills thanks to its picturesque, treelined streets, charming homes and a much-anticipated yard. The couple owned a rental home in the neighborhood for years, intending to one day build their personal manifesto on the spacious lot. This year, the pair turned their dream into a reality, replacing the dated duplex with a modern manor that plants a fresh, contemporary face to the street—without uprooting the storied

neighborhood’s traditional feel. And, where many find it hard to stay grounded when creating a home from the ground up, this wasn’t the first rodeo for this design-minded couple. As the founder of K2 Construction, Kevin specializes in custom homes and renovations; Lee is a nationally renowned interior designer and owner of Pieces, the acclaimed Buckhead interiors boutique. After decades of employing their impeccable skill sets to patrons across the country, the couple became clients of their own for the project of a lifetime. Lee—famed for her modern styling and attention to rare and
interesting details—sought to incorporate industrial and coastal elements into the project to create a Dutch meets West Indies–style façade with the help of talented friend and famed architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt and Associates. The resulting exterior seamlessly transitions into a 4,160-square-foot contemporary interior that treats its lush, treetop surroundings like a cocooning living room. Natural light pours into painstakingly edited rooms that are grounded with a classic black, white, and gold palette, midcentury vintage touches and small surprises that make huge statements. Here, Lee reveals a closer look into their highly personal dwelling. 89

BEGIN? DID YOU EVER GO AGAINST YOUR OWN GRAIN?
Lee Kleinhelter: It feels like we live in a tree house with all our windows. It’s amazing to be in the city but feel like you’re in the mountains. K2 Construction created custom iron windows made with modern mullions so we’d get the full view of the nature preserve that’s behind our property but looks like our backyard.
Our initial color palette was black, white and gold. I first selected the black grasscloth that lines the walls of the main level, striped Missoni carpet for the stairs, and a mix of new and vintage pieces to keep things interesting. While black, white and gold was the base throughout the house, I carefully selected interesting fabrics and finishes to keep each space unique. But not every room is completely black and white—[my son] Holden picked orange for his room, and the guest room pops with bright yellow. The key is to not have a formula and know when to stop. Editing is everything.
WHAT WAS YOUR OVERARCHING VISION?
We’re fortunate to design a house that tells the same story outside and inside. There is a circular theme that flows through the home, starting with arching windows on the façade and custom round cement pavers that lead to the front door, and then with mirrored globe pendants that hang in the stairwell’s front window that continue to tell the story from the inside out. wood to give it the blackest color and layered texture. The Japanese used this as a natural way to keep bugs out of their home. It’s fascinating and certainly the conversation piece. It was also the perfect horizontal line we needed for the oversize long gas fireplace on the same wall. It perfectly tied in the play on textures and woods. SPEAKING OF TEXTURE AND WOOD, THE KITCHEN IS AN IMPRESSIVE MIX OF STYLE AND EFFICIENCY.
I don’t like clutter or waste, so it was essential to utilize every space in the house in an organized way. The kitchen cabinets inset seamlessly into the walls, creating a streamlined aesthetic with tons of hidden storage. We chose a black-and-white real wood veneer for the face of the cabinets, with custom Lucite and brass hardware. Some people have lovely paintings, but I obsess over interesting textures and hardware—this is art to us. I am lucky to have amazing vintage resources as the owner of Pieces. However, this does not mean it is always easy to find what you’re hunting for— even for your own home. I fell in love with a pair of vintage Lucite and brass bar stools that were perfect for the kitchen island; unfortunately, I needed four. My design team at Pieces hunted for weeks to find two more. The stools are now one of my favorite pieces in the house. They tell a story and are truly a vintage find. WHAT WAS YOUR STRATEGY WHEN SHOPPING VINTAGE FOR YOUR OWN HOME?
Sometimes I know exactly what I am looking for and other times I stumble across something supercool and build the look around it. For instance, I found amazing vintage hardware that I used for the master bathroom and Lucite knobs for Madison’s bathroom. However, it’s not just about finding stuff; it’s about how to edit and knowing when to stop. TELL US ABOUT THE ROCK CLIMBING AREA ABOVE HOLDEN'S ROOM. WAS THIS A SPECIAL REQUEST?
Kevin’s great at space planning and brainstorming these ideas with clients. It’s fun to always ask, ‘Why can’t we use this space?’ or ‘How can we use this in a different way?’ We tried with this project to think outside the box. We had a large ‘bonus’ space over Holden’s bunk beds, so we turned it into a climbing room. I wanted to create a space that’s fun and active for friends to come over and use. It’s actually been fun for all ages. 98

ATLANTA IS RENOWNED FOR ITS CLOSE-KNIT design community, but few projects have been as prolific as that of designer Jeff Jones, garden designer Tim Stoddard and the owners of a horse farm outside the city. For more than 20 years Jones and Stoddard have been curating, cultivating and creating a 10-acre property for the proprietors of Traditions in Tile and Stone. “As much as the house and grounds have evolved, so too has our friendship, and it has been a true collaboration,” says Jones. Traditions in Tile and Stone was founded in 1936 and remains a leading supplier throughout the Southeast. “When looking for a house near Atlanta, we fell in love with this land and all of its possibilities,” says the owner. However, the 1970s ranch-style house required an extensive renovation to turn it into the charming French country house it

is today. “Whenever we had a vision, Jeff and Tim made it happen,” says the homeowner. Custom millwork and stonework throughout the house exude timeless grace while artfully crafted landscaping softly envelops and frames the home. The marriage of old and new architectural elements continues inside, where vintage French windows with original shutters and an antique French courtyard door establish an inviting aesthetic. The interiors are eclectic and highly personal. “The owners and I share a similar belief that houses should be pretty, interesting and fun—but nothing should be too precious, and there should always be surprises,” says Jones. When shopping for a master bedroom headboard, Jones and the owner happened upon a French tapestry artist. Inspired by the paintings, they decided to embrace improvisation and European

“THE OWNERS AND I SHARE A BELIEF THAT HOUSES SHOULD BE PRETTY, INTERESTING AND FUN— BUT THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE SURPRISES,” SAYS JONES.

joie de vivre by hanging a custom tapestry as the headboard. Pops of color charge the living spaces in unexpected ways. From a pair of vibrant yellow chairs in the bedroom to the rousing blue modern chairs in the living room, the furnishings engage the eye and the imagination. “Jeff is a true artist in all that he does, and he makes the process such fun,” notes the owner. Although there are no longer horses on the property, the gardens have flourished. Stoddard has created multiple areas around the property for gathering and meandering. Arbors, trellises and intriguing architectural details define the outdoor living spaces. Native species as well as a few formal elements create the same unexpected but artistic tone found inside the house. “Tim’s love of gardens is evident, and he always surprises me,” says the owner. This 20-year journey might have begun as a design and landscape project, but it has evolved into a captivating secret garden of artistic expression and lifelong friendship.

CANOPY BEDS
I CAN AT LAST declare that I have a serious addiction. It is not just online shopping. It is stalking furniture on LiveAuctioneers. com like a mountain lion on the Serengeti. On my short list: Edward Fields carpets, P.E. Guerin gilt bronze tables and Tiffany china. But, until recently, I had yet to land the big game. And by “big game,” I am referring to a canopy bed. As a child in Birmingham, Alabama, I coveted my girl cousins’ canopy beds. So what if they were made of particleboard? I wanted one. I needed one. Momma thought that the four-poster she had found at an auction was just perfect and set about painting it white with flying butterflies and dancing ladybugs. Where was the canopy? She suggested that I hang a sheet from the four posts and left with her acrylic paints.
This serene, creamy bedroom designed by Phoebe Howard deftly layers soft textures and fabrics, but it is the feminine canopy that takes center stage, creating an ethereal escape that feels equal parts elegant and welcoming.
120
Even during the years I spent consulting at 1stdibs, it eluded me. But last month I spotted it. Eureka! A mahogany canopy bed was for sale at a local auction. It was a beauty: Twisted posts rising to meet the canopy of rose velvet with silk roped trim and a hanging valance. It had to be mine. As the day dawned, I was shaking in anticipation. As the bidding started I saw the dealers’ hands go up. (“No!” I thought to myself. “They always get the best antiques!”) The bidding soon ebbed (apparently the older canopy beds require custom-sized mattresses) and my arm shot up. I knew where to get the mattress. And down came the hammer at $350—in my favor. It only took me 50 years, but as I write, I am resting in my canopy bed, where, with a flick of the hand, I can pull shut the side panels and be in my personal cocoon. Only the light of my computer flickers in the dark as I determine my next prey. Perhaps a Venetian glass mirror? It might look perfect hung on the wall behind my canopy bed.
