“EVERY DAY IS AN OPENING DAY.” Phoenix is rising from the ashes. When it comes to Atlanta, both old and new mottos and metaphors have been constructed to symbolize the rhythmic pattern of newness and reinvention to which our burgeoning city has grown so accustomed. That sense of optimism, of course, often serves us well from the outside looking in. (Look who just landed Super Bowl LIII!) The flip side, however, is that this kind of philosophy also, by default, begets destruction. Take, for example, the current debate over the fate of the Marcel Breuer-designed Central Library, a brutalist structure downtown. Or, the 2015 destruction of Glenridge Hall, a 1929 Tudor Revival estate in Sandy Spring best known for its appearance in films like Driving Miss Daisy, removed in the name of economic development. Ditto for the four-columned façade of Ansley Park’s Craigie House, built in 1911 for the nation’s second Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. But on to the good news! (That optimism, again.) Our August issue explores three historic residences that have recently been restored by local design dream teams, some with decidedly modern outlooks. In Buckhead, we visit the storied Evans-Cucich house, believed to be the only residential example of Art Deco in the city. We also head to Midland, Ga., to architect Rick Spitzmiller’s reconstructed, circa-1852 weekend retreat. And finally, we rack the brains of top architects for their take on Atlanta’s legacy—and the buildings they call architectural landmarks. Pride of place, after all, is the most powerful construct. What are your favorite landmarks in Atlanta, or throughout the state?
ARCHITECTURE ARTICULATED WRITTEN BY
Suzanna Cullen Hamilton
Atlanta’s rapid development raises serious questions about our city’s architectural landmarks and historic preservation. What will define our legacy—and determine our future? Norman D. Askins, D. Stanley Dixon, Robert Norris, Frederick Spitzmiller and Keith Summerour weigh in.

D. STANLEY DIXON: Philip Trammell Shutze changed the trajectory of Atlanta’s architectural excellence. The Swan House exemplifies a highly articulated and sophisticated interior. The High Museum by Richard Meier set the bar for Atlanta’s contemporary architecture. ROBERT NORRIS: Oakland Cemetery and the Fox Theatre are Atlanta landmarks. Barrington Hall in Roswell and Pebble Hill Plantation in Thomasville are renowned throughout Georgia. FREDERICK SPITZMILLER: In designing the Academy of Medicine and The Temple, Shutze exemplified classical forms that combined perfect scale with incredible imagination and inspiration. In Savannah, 19th-century homes designed by William Jay and the Cotton Exchange are fabulous. KEITH SUMMEROUR: Georgia Cracker farmhouses embody the 19th-century Southern vernacular while Entelechy II on Sea Island speaks to John Portman’s creativity in the 20th century. The future of the world was contemplated in The Little White House.
Which landmark projects, residential or commercial, have proved watershed moments for our communities? FS: Saving
the Fox Theatre was a turning point for Atlanta preservationists. The adaptive reuse of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. building as the vibrant Ponce City Market is an inspiration for similar acts of intelligent commercial development. RN: Inman Park was Atlanta’s first planned suburb in the late 19th century, and The Wren’s Nest was home to Joel Chandler Harris—both important Atlanta landmarks. NORMAN ASKINS: The Herndon mansion represents a pivotal moment for Atlanta architecture and history. Alonzo Herndon was

born a slave but became one of America’s wealthiest African-Americans in the 20th century and built this superb example of Colonial Revival architecture. KS: The construction of Lake Lanier was pivotal in providing water to the growing Atlanta region. DSD: Savannah was established in 1733, and the series of plush green parks surrounded by residences represent one of the country’s best-planned cities.
What is the state of historic preservation in Georgia? Which organizations are critical to raising awareness of our architectural landmarks? NA: We
must focus on both the preservation of our historic neighborhoods and our homes. A building’s character is as dependent upon the fabric of its neighborhood as it is upon its architectural detailing. DSD: Unfortunately, we have little in place 17

Can you comment on the recent trend of tearing down historic properties in favor of building new residences and commercial centers? DSD: The
trend is unfortunate. Preserving our well-designed historic structures will make our city a better place, and there’s always potential and value in restoring them. FS: Until onerous tax laws and regulations 18

to preserve our landmark structures. However, I compliment the Atlanta History Center on their incredible job maintaining records and plans. FS: Outmoded and burdensome tax regulations cause many homeowners to forgo working with an historic structure, so Atlanta will continue to lose historic buildings if the tax laws are not changed. The Atlanta Preservation Center, The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the Buckhead Heritage Society and The Sandy Springs Society are crucial in raising historical, cultural and social awareness. RN: We need more sensitivity to the historical significance of both houses and the families who occupied them. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and the National Trust for Historic Preservation are excellent organizations devoted to preservation.

are changed to make it attractive to preserve structures, the trend towards new construction will override preservation. NA: Losing historic properties is an irreparable loss of our city’s character.

and expediency. NA: Atlanta is still struggling to establish a civic identity. It has a rich heritage in residential architecture, but it remains to be seen if the city will keep it. RN: Atlanta has wonderful homes, so with a commitment to historic preservation, she could be a beautifully preserved city. DSD: Classical inspiration will continue to define our residential architecture while green spaces and tree canopies define our neighborhoods.
What does Atlanta’s architectural future hold? DSD: Atlanta should embrace and preserve her past while looking forward to her future. FS: Atlanta has an abundance of first-rate design talent. If our public would be as discerning in good design as they are in restaurants and cars, then Atlanta could anticipate a golden architectural future. KS: Atlanta is not a static city; it’s one of change. RN: If we can harness Atlanta’s current excellent architectural talent with historic preservation awareness, then we can expect a beautiful community. NA: Unbridled growth in all sectors—scary.

THE STATE-OF-THE-ART MercedesBenz Stadium, designed by HOK, ensures prestigious sporting events for the city, but it’s not Atlanta’s only model of groundbreaking architecture. Throughout the city are examples created by both international and local architects whose commercial projects have garnered global attention for the city. No area rivaled Midtown’s explosive growth in the late 20th century. Atlanta architect HENRI JOVA revolutionized Midtown when he designed Colony Square in the 1970s as a mixed-use development featuring office, retail, hotel and condominiums. When Pritzker Prize–winning architect RICHARD MEIER designed the contemporary High Museum of Art in 1983, it opened to worldwide acclaim with a massive colorful sculpture by Alexander Calder, added in 1988, commanding the grassy field outside the contemporary white-box building. RENZO PIANO was named one of the Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World after designing the three building additions to the High in 2005. Other Midtown masterpieces include One Atlantic Center, designed by acclaimed postmodernist architect PHILIP JOHNSON, and Ten Peachtree Place, designed by MICHAEL GRAVES. However, Graves’ most significant contribution to Atlanta is his design of the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, recently named one of the Best University Museums in America by Architectural Digest. For more than 150 years, Atlanta’s financial district was headquartered downtown, but Buckhead assumed that role with thun-

dering growth in the 21st century. ROBERT A. M. STERN, dean of the Yale School of Architecture, is internationally recognized as the face of new classical architecture. When he designed what is now the Mandarin Oriental Atlanta on Peachtree Road in 2008, Buckhead’s identity as the city’s intersection of finance, luxury retail and high-networth residential real estate was confirmed. Atlanta’s most controversial building remains the Atlanta-Fulton Central Library, the final masterwork by 20th-century modernist MARCEL BREUER. Its brutalist design was never warmly received by locals, and it’s fallen into significant disrepair; however, it’s been placed on the World Monuments Fund’s list of most endangered sites. The list of internationally renowned architects working in Atlanta is long, but none have had the commercial impact of Atlanta architect JOHN PORTMAN. Spanning more than half a century and including projects as diverse as hotels, business centers and educational facilities, Portman’s work has left an indelible mark on the city. He established Atlanta as a center for design and commerce when he developed both the Merchandise Mart and the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center in 1961. He was
internationally hailed when he created the first indoor atrium at the Hyatt Regency in 1967, and he went on to such projects as SunTrust Plaza, Peachtree Center, and the Westin and Marriott Marquis hotels. Although Atlanta will continue to expand geographically, it remains to be seen whether our city’s leadership will take measures to preserve the cornerstones established by some of the world’s most revered 20th-century architects. Perhaps this genteel city will determine that the commercial landmarks created by these modernist hands should remain even as the city continues to grow.

ATLANTA-BASED EQUITY ESTATES is aiming to turn vacations into a long-term investment. Its luxury residence fund has a portfolio of more than 60 residences in more than 25 countries such as Costa Rica, Turks & Caicos, Hilton Head and Lake Tahoe. Equity’s first fund raised more than $60 million, and the second fund, which above Equity Estates, Napa Valley. right Equity Estates, Costa Rica.
seeks to raise about $30 million to purchase another 10 to 12 residences, is expected to be finished this year. MATHEWS FURNITURE + DESIGN and PINEAPPLE HOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN have contributed to the design of the properties. Average annual occupancy rate is 57 percent, which protects the properties and allows investors to have their pick of vacation spots. “We are intentionally putting homes in a portfolio for the long-term financial gain of investors," says cofounder Philip Mekelburg. We are leaving time available for homes (to be) open. We are not acting like a hotel or renting it out.”

Naomi Von Habersham WITH MOST THINGS IN LIFE, I can easily play favorites. Without a doubt, blue is the color I fancy most, while Baskin-Robbins’ Mint Chocolate Chip is, hands down, my favorite flavor of ice cream. Which movie do I like best? That’s easy—it’s Gone with the Wind. Why, I even prefer one brand of shoes above all others: Manolo Blahnik. (And as a shoe addict, choosing a best-loved brand is no easy feat.) But ask me to name my favorite architectural style, and I’m at a loss for words. You see, I like so many types of architecture that I can’t begin to anoint one the winner. Show me an Art Deco skyscraper, and I’ll show you someone who is devastated she didn’t live during the 1920s and ’30s. Is there anything more dazzling than Manhattan’s Chrysler Building illuminated at night? Here in Atlanta, we have the William Oliver building, located downtown. Although now converted to condominiums, the building retains its shiny, anything-but-mundane, Art Deco–style lobby, whose jazzy good looks manage to lull you back to the 1930s. On the other hand, I’m also drawn to brutalism, which, decades after its heyday in the mid-20th century, seems to be enjoying a newfound appreciation. Stripped down and sometimes hulking-looking, brutalism has a rawness to which I’m strangely attracted. In my opinion, Atlanta’s best example of brutalist architecture is the Marcel Breuer–designed Atlanta– Fulton Central Public Library. I admit that it might not be the prettiest of buildings, but its architectural significance makes it one of the most important buildings in the city, which is all the more reason why it should be preserved. And then there’s the Fox Theatre, whose peculiar blend of architectural styles appeals to my Catholic tastes. Islamic on the one hand and Egyptian on the other, the Fox is like an architectural romp through The Arabian Nights. What’s not to love about that? (How grateful I am for those Atlantans who fought to save the Fox from being razed 40 years ago!) So, with a range of architectural tastes as divergent as mine, how could I possibly pick just one?

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN W I T H AT L A N T A H O M E S & L I F E S T Y L E S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ELIZABETH RALLS When we first met in Atlanta in 2013, you were releasing your gorgeous collection of fabrics, trim and more for Schumacher, and the blue-and-white draped sunroom you designed for an Atlanta showhouse made a huge splash with the city’s design community and enthusiasts alike. What excites you about working with another wonderful community in the American South, Cashiers, North Carolina? I am a strong believer in preservation and restoration, as are the members of The Cashiers Historical Society. We share a common belief that by preserving historic structures, one is able to share a very tangible part of our cultural identity.
ABOUT TIMOTHY CORRIGAN With offices in Los Angeles and Paris, Timothy Corrigan’s distinctive design philosophy of comfortable elegance has earned him a global client list that includes European and Middle Eastern royalty, Hollywood celebrities and corporate leaders. His work has been published in numerous prestigious publications around the world. His critically-acclaimed book, An Invitation to Château du Grand-Lucé (Rizzoli), chronicles the restoration of his 18th-century chateau in the Loire Valley. In 2014, he introduced the first fully integrated line of fabrics, trims, furniture and floor covering for Schumacher and Patterson, Flynn & Martin. He received the “Star of Design Award” from the Pacific Design Center and he was the first American designer honored by the French Heritage Society for his restoration of several national landmarks in France. In keeping with his collaborations with French heritage brands, Timothy is designing a collection of bath fixtures for THG Paris, furniture for Moissoinnier and lighting fixtures for Bagues. He is also developing passementerie for Samuel & Sons and wallpaper for Fromental, all to debut in 2017 and 2018.

What’s your take on Southern style? I think of Southern style as being warm, gracious and welcoming, which is perfectly in line with my design philosophy of Comfortable Elegance. I love that Southern style has such respect for classicism, beauty and hospitality. We’re smitten with your new Jardin Francais collection for Royal Limoges! What was your inspiration for the fine china? The inspiration came from my love of French gardens and garden pavilions; all of the various designs in the collection are taken from 18thcentury treillage patterns and reinterpreted in a fresh, modern way. Each piece in the collection draws from a different aspect of treillage, from a simple trellis pattern to the more complex designs often found as a focal point in French garden pavilions. The versatile pattern can go from breakfast, to outdoor terrace to a formal candlelit dining room. I believe in making everyday special, which includes serving meals on fine porcelain, so I worked with Royal Limoges to insure that this collection is dishwasher and microwave safe—gold accents and all! We’re as thrilled to hear about your forthcoming collections with THG, Samuel & Sons and Fromental as we are sad to see you’re parting ways with Chateau du Grand-Lucé! What exciting adventures does the future hold? I am working on a new book project as well as a seven story historic townhouse in London. Château du Grand-Lucé was truly a labor of love and a place that has brought me great joy, but what I have come to realize, is that I love the process of restoration and decoration more than the actual act of possessing a property. Who knows what will be next?

LETTER FROM THE
SHOWHOUSE CHAIR Welcome to Cashiers and to Showhouse 2016. This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Cashiers Historical Society and the 19th for Showhouse! My dream this year was to ensure the experience was one that would make visitors want to come back again and again. I viewed several candidate properties, but just knew it had to be the historic Burt Farm. My very supportive husband, Jeff, and my friend Jochen Lucke of Silver Creek Real Estate were instrumental partners in making the Burt Farm location a viable reality for this year’s Showhouse. With the help of Sally Shropshire, our new Executive Director at The Cashiers Historical Society, we have amassed the best collection of notable designers from all over the country. The wealth of talent has been matched only by the generosity of our sponsors, the excellence of our vendors, the insight of Reed Keller, Chair of The Cashiers Historical Society, and the contributions of our volunteers under the expert guidance of our volunteer coordinators. We’re sure your Showhouse 2016 experience will be positively unforgettable and we hope to see you down on Burt Farm again and again and again.

T
he Cashiers Designer Showhouse, benefitting The Cashiers Historical Society, caps off the summer season on the Plateau. This year, we’re pleased to welcome you to historic Burt Farm.
Also known as the James Madison Zachary House, Burt Farm was built in 1880 on 1500 acres of stunning grounds that exemplify the natural amenities of Western North Carolina. Dr. James Zachary, a dentist, married Alice Rogers in 1877 and built the house three years later. The couple lived in a cabin on the property while the house, which would eventually be home to the family’s eight daughters, was under construction. A man of many talents and pursuits beyond his dentistry practice, Dr. Zachary cultivated the acreage around the house into a working farm. He fenced off more than 400 acres for grass and grains and 20 for wheat and rye in addition to planting an apple orchard. He also raised hogs, cattle
22
and horses and devoted more than 105 acres to fish ponds. Dr. Zachary owned and operated both a saw mill and a kiln on the property, where materials for the house were fabricated. Alice, who also held the position of postmaster until 1905, continued to operate the farm after Dr. Zachary’s death in 1898. Upon her death in 1927, the property of Burt Farm was divided among the couple’s surviving daughters. Among the highlights of this historic home are its seven bedrooms and four baths, a charming guest cottage and an airy outdoor living area. The porch retains its original detailing, including the sawnwork on the second level and a six-light lancet window in the gable end. Today, the grounds boast a tennis court and putting green, while numerous streams, ponds, waterfalls, expansive vistas and hiking trails make for stunning scenery and space for a plethora of outdoor activities.

PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF CASHIERS VALLEY
The Cashiers Historical Society was established in 1996 to preserve and protect the village identity and heritage of Cashiers Valley through education, stewardship and advocacy. Each year, through your generosity and support of Showhouse, we are able to further our mission. In the past 12 months, we have continued to increase and enhance our educational programming for school-age children, including broadening the scope of Founders Day. This annual celebration of heritage and history brings third and fourth graders from Blue Ridge School, Summit Charter School and homeschoolers of the same age together to learn about 19th century activities and home life. The Jan Wyatt Symposium, our popular program for life-long learners, continues to be a highlight of our educational programs. This year’s program was produced in cooperation with Western Carolina University and focused on the life, work and legacy of Horace Kephart, the American travel writer and librarian best known for his book Our Southern Highlands, which chronicles his life and experiences in the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina.
We also completed Phase 3 of our well-received Historic Sites Survey, an in-depth study of historic homes and buildings in the Cashiers Valley. This phase focuses specifically on 52 properties located along the Highway 64 East corridor, Cedar Creek Road and the Bullpen vicinity. All three phases are available for purchase. Additionally, we moved into production of the fourth phase of our Faces and Places project. This ongoing work of visual and oral documentation features, among other highlights, the photography of Tim Barnwell. Phase 3 is currently on exhibit at our Visitor’s Center. We invite you to visit our pristine 5.76-acre site on Highway 107 South, where you can tour the historic ZacharyTolbert House and spend some time in the restored Colonel John’s Cabin. The grounds are also home to a number of well-marked walking trails that lead to documented points of interest. It is with your gifts that we continue to flourish. We sincerely thank you for your support in helping us preserve the heritage and history of our area for this and future generations. *For more information, visit cashiershistoricalsociety.org.

Nowhere will you find a more genuine farmto-table experience than during Showhouse 2016. Our historic locale is more than just a pretty abode; Burt Farm lives up to its name, having been established and operated as a working farm by Dr. James Zachary. Of the original plot, more than 400 acres were reserved for grass and grains and 20 for wheat and rye. He also raised hogs, cattle and horses, and planted an apple orchard. Another 105 acres were devoted to fish ponds. This year, dining at Showhouse 2016 will echo the very essence of what it means to enjoy a farm-totable experience. From daily dining options on site to the carefully curated menus at our many events, you’ll find locally sourced, sustainable cuisine that echoes both the natural history and popular tastes of our mountain home.

Deco Drama
Believed to be the only Art Deco residence in Atlanta, the Evans-Cucich house has long been the subject of fascination
in Buckhead due to both its dazzling architecture and storied former owners. After falling into a state of disrepair, the property was purchased in 2013; architect J. Ryan Duffey, designer Nancy Duffey and landscape architect Carson McElheney were enlisted to return the property to its former glory. PAGE 76

With its stepped profile and ornamental reliefs, the EvansCucich house, built in 1934, is believed to be Atlanta’s only Art Deco residence. “Like many admirers, we knew the home was one-of-a-kind,” says Parker Blanchard, who purchased the thendilapidated structure with his wife, McKenzie, in 2013, and enlisted architect J. Ryan Duffey for its restoration.

FEW HOUSES IN BUCKHEAD have been the source of such endless fascination as the EvansCucich house, built in 1934 and named for its previous owners. Considered to be Atlanta’s only Art Deco residence, it has captivated neighbors and passersby for decades, while rumors of its mysterious underground tunnel, thought to lead to the opposite side of the street, have been the fodder of neighborhood lore for generations. But by the time Parker Blanchard and his wife, McKenzie, bought the house in 2013, the structure was in disrepair. Undeterred by the home’s ailments and dazzled by its architecture, the couple embarked on a major restoration of the house, assembling an expert team to help bring the house back to its former glory, all while gently tweaking it for the needs of a 21st-century family. Serving as architect for the project was Ryan Duffey, whose enthusiasm for the house equaled that of the homeowners. “The house presented an awesome 78

Because the existing windows and doors were damaged beyond repair, Ryan chose replacements that were consistent with the home’s age and style. The terrazzo floors are original to the house and were laid only at the front, where guests were traditionally received. opposite The front-facing rooms, originally designed to be more formal, feature stylized wall reliefs. “Art Deco architecture is about playing with crisp shapes,” says Ryan of the aesthetic.

The living room was painted crisp white to emphasize the original architecture. Striking a 21st-century note are a pair of bentwood upholstered chairs from Bungalow Classic and a metal cocktail table from Holland & Company. A rug from Moattar softens the terrazzo floor. right “The Art Deco architecture acts like a piece of art, so we allowed it to take the place of art,” says designer Nancy Duffey, who treated the entrance hall to clean-lined pieces, such as a round table from B.D. Jeffries, an Eve and Staron rug from and a Holland & Company chair. bottom right Located in the former kitchen, the study was painted gray to give it a cozier, more masculine feel.

look at the past and an awesome look forward,” says Ryan. “How could I not get obsessed professionally?” After securing the long-leaking roof and addressing the significant water damage it had permitted, Ryan focused on preserving what was still intact. Although rotted doors and windows required replacement, most of the original fixtures and hardware were retained. Even the curious exterior finish—not limestone, as many assume it to be, but rather a painted concrete veneer over brick—was refreshed with a new coat of paint. Equal to the team’s desire to preserve this architectural gem was the need to adapt the residence to a modern lifestyle. Adamant about maintaining the integrity of the house, Ryan retained the more formal layout of the front of the home while restructuring the rear to create more casual living spaces. And in a move that runs counter to today’s ubiquitous supersize renovations, the homeowners and Ryan decided to increase the square footage only by about 1,500 square feet. Also bridging old with new are the interiors, for which the couple enlisted Ryan’s wife, designer Nancy Duffey. The crisp Art Deco architecture prompted a mostly white color palette and cleanlined furnishings, which notably lack pattern. But while the decor might be pared down, comfort is not lacking. “The homeowners did not want the house to feel like a museum,” says Nancy. “They wanted it to be livable and a home for a family.” Although the Blanchards recently sold the historic property, Parker remains proud of what he and his team accomplished—so much so that he renamed the residence Evans-Cucich-Hayden, in memory of his late twin brother, Hayden, who shared his sibling’s passion for this singular home. See Resources, Back of Book. 83

photograph of an allwhite, marble-clad bath that McKenzie loved; the Art Deco–style sconces are a nod to the architecture. opposite Although the ornate stair railing is original to the house, the elaborate crystal chandelier, which is 26 feet tall and weighs over 2,000 pounds, was a later addi-
tion. This chandelier, once displayed in a Manhattan hotel, was purchased in the ’80s by previous homeowner A. Stephen Cucich, who installed it in the stair hall. Later removed from the premises, the chandelier was recently procured by the Blanchards, who returned it to its rightful place.

THE BUOYANCY AND EMPOWERMENT THAT COMES WITH WORKING IN A BEAUTIFUL SETTING is just as important as the environment you choose to surround yourself with in your private dwelling, says architect Bobby McAlpine. “What you practice at home can follow you to work,” he shares. It’s a beauty-as-sanctuary philosophy that business partner and acclaimed designer Susan Ferrier not only espouses but also kept top of mind as she devised the interiors for their newly renovated office inside ADAC. “The emotionality we brought into this space is a higher vibration—and ultimately, it brings out better results in the workplace,” says Ferrier of the crisp but atmospheric mood she and McAlpine have created for their team of 11. Indeed, it’s powerful, rhythmic gestures, such as floor-to-ceiling drapery partitions, high-back skirted chairs, and wood-planked walls that allow employees of the architectureand-interiors firm both the privacy to succeed and the freedom to “strengthen a common muscle,” as McAlpine says. 89

The partners’ holistic approach to design also happens to be smart business practice. Clients who walk through the doors of their new office, says Ferrier, feel a sense of security and ease upon encountering what feels more like a living room than a typical office setting. “Without words, the layout of our office lays any insecurities to rest,” says Ferrier. Of course, context also played a starring role in the residential feel of their new space. Moving into the “library,” as McAlpine and Ferrier call ADAC, was a bold move, one that raised the level of expectation from neighboring showrooms and manufacturers alike. However, “there’s no substitute for being among like minded people who hold beauty in greater esteem,” says Ferrier. That sense of community, in fact, plays a key role in the firm’s success, as vendors and clients also happen to be great friends. “Our work and our social interaction are so interwebbed,” says McAlpine. “Most of our interaction happens here. So how we go about working and what it looks and feels like is really important.” See Resources, Back of Book.
above “Each of our partners feel the buoyancy and empowerment of working in a beautiful setting,” says McAlpine, pictured in his Atlanta office. “We do for ourselves what we ask others to do, and it’s a beautiful investment.” left An antique mirrored wall at the end of the hallway reflects the strong, rhythmic gestures McAlpine and Ferrier have taken care to create for the employees of their architecture-and-design firm, newly relocated to ADAC.

Architect Frederick Spitzmiller reconstructs an 1852 Greek Revival home for 21st-century living. WRITTEN BY Suzanna

As the sun sets over the lush grounds, the Greek Revival home known as Redland overlooks its new site in Harris County. Nineteenth-century bricks lead to the period house restored by Atlanta architect Rick Spitzmiller of Spitzmiller & Norris.

SOUTHERNERS KNOW A GOOD HOUND WILL ALWAYS FIND HIS WAY HOME. When Randolph showed up on Rick Spitzmiller’s gracious Greek Revival front porch, the dog became the master of the architect’s exquisite 19th-century country retreat known as Redland. “Growing up as an equestrian, I always asked my parents if we could ride past the beautiful house in Midland, Georgia,” says Spitzmiller. The house was built in 1852 for the Jenkins family and remained in the family until they decided to sell it in 2005. “I was ready to find a refined country home to be a respite from Atlanta, and this house had always captivated me,” he says. By relocating the house to his property in Harris County, Spitzmiller lost the tax benefits of purchasing a historic home, but, he says, “I acquired the architectural freedom to make the house comfortable, including creating a new kitchen, bathrooms and extra living space.”

Moving a historic home is a highly detailed process that demands minute orchestration, from numbering each brick and board to enlisting a retinue of state troopers to escort the oversized load on tractor-trailers to the new site. The central hallway of Redland is 40 feet long and 12 feet wide, so the roof was dismantled and the house was cut into two pieces for transporting. Although the structure only moved 18 miles, it took a year of planning and preparation to make sure it could be placed on its new footings upon arrival. While Redland survived the move with most of the original architectural elements intact, the restoration proved to be one of patience and persistence. The new roof installation destroyed the original plaster walls, and the central hallway floors were too worn to be refinished. Fortunately, however, Spitzmiller’s foresight and planning ensured appropriate remedies. “We had packed the original plaster ceiling rosettes; we replaced the plaster walls; and we sourced the same 19th-century heart pine floorboards from the Jenkins family barn, so it all appears original,” he says. The house is higher in the front than in the back, so Spitzmiller excavated land to accommodate additional living space on the lower level that once housed the root cellar. Now, guest bedrooms and bathrooms, a studio and a laundry room are inviting quarters for Redland’s frequent guests. The soaring ceilings, beautiful windows, period-style mantels and antique furnishings mix with comfortable upholstery for charming interiors throughout the house. “It’s all in consonance with the context,” says Spitzmiller. As confirmation, Redland was awarded The Philip Trammell Shutze award from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s Southeast chapter. Spitzmiller notes that he’s found his “bucolic, happy place” with his loyal Southern hound, red Georgia clay and exquisite example of Greek Revival architecture. Randolph certainly has a very discerning nose. See Resources, Back of Book.

ARCHITECTS TODD PRITCHETT AND CRAIG DIXON always see the glass half full. It’s this optimism that has allowed them to transform the most out-of-date houses—that many might have deemed teardowns—into standout homes. “We’re not about the quick fix,” says Dixon. “We love the challenge of creating something remarkable with what’s already in front of us. It presents you with the opportunity to do something unique.” So when the design couple purchased this 1920s Virginia-Highland home that was long past its prime, they didn’t let its worn-down condition or awkward layout (it had once been a duplex) deter them. Instead, they set out to create “the ultimate bungalow.” After a down-to-the-studs renovation and the addition of a sunroom and second floor, the final result is a clean and contemporary bungalow that’s equally warm and inviting. The design is influenced by travels abroad as well as inspiration a little closer to home. “It’s a mix of Southern sensibilities with clean European lines,” says Pritchett.

above The couple relied on Morgan Creek Cabinet Company to bring their vision for the kitchen to life. The cabinetry features a combination of butternut wood and lacquered black fronts. A paper-thin cantilevered marble top from Marmi Natural Stone on the island is equally impressive. Barstools, Quinze & Milan. Art, Jeff Jones. left A tempered-glass staircase is a nod to Pritchett and Dixon’s love for modern European design. The stairs had to be constructed outside and then set
into place by a crane on the second floor. The frameless structure gives the middle of the home an airy effect, letting light from the stairwell skylight fill every corner. opposite They enlisted Chandler Hardscapes to install a koi pond that can be enjoyed from the master bedroom or sunroom. “After a long day of work, the koi pond provides you with a few moments of zen and knocks your blood pressure down pretty quickly,” says Dixon. The chairs are from Room & Board.

above “We wanted to add some drama in the study, so we painted everything in our favorite black color,” says Pritchett. They were able to salvage the home’s original 1920s wood floors in this room. The painting is by Rocio Rodriguez, also a Virginia-Highland resident. Lounge chairs from HBF Furniture’s Dialogue collection were upholstered in buttery soft leather from Edelman. The desk is from CB2 and the desk chair is vintage Herman Miller. right The master bedroom is also a testament to the couple’s minimalist aesthetic. “It probably comes from being architects,” notes
110
Dixon. “We don’t like a lot of extra things around the house, and we use everything that we have, so we’re very careful in selecting nice, comfortable pieces and great artwork that really speaks to us.” The glass doors were fabricated by Kolbe & Kolbe. opposite In contrast to the welcoming front porch that is constantly buzzing with activity, a new courtyard in the back is idyllic for more peaceful, quiet moments. When the couple does choose to entertain alfresco, though, a teak table by Kolo Collection and chairs from DWR are ready for dinner parties.

“There’s a subtle transition as you walk through the house. It gets progressively more informal towards the back, where it picks up on our work at Lake Rabun and Lake Burton,” he adds, in reference to the shiplap on the kitchen walls and oak beams overhead. They were also conscious of flooding the bungalow with daylight. A skylight was installed in the stairwell to disperse light in the middle of the home, while floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors at the back allow them to leave the lights off until the sun sets. This also blurs the lines between indoors and out, which was another priority. “All you see is trees and can’t tell that you’re in the middle of a city,” notes Pritchett. And what’s an ultimate bungalow if not a space to entertain? “The home was really designed for hospitality because we love to
host dinner parties,” says Dixon. For the dining room, they commissioned a 6-foot-diameter walnut table that has served up plenty of cocktails, conversations and Dixon’s mouthwatering paella. The rest of the home accommodates guests just as well, with the kitchen featuring an intimate dining nook and an adjustable Miele range hood over the island that can be raised out of view. Plush seating in the more formal living room at the front end of the house is also ideal for drinks. “Our goal was to make this home extraordinary, and it’s a fitting farewell to bungalows for us,” says Pritchett. He and Dixon recently sold this property to embark on their next design challenge in what will undoubtedly yield another spectacular space to call home. See Resources, Back of Book. 111

LIFE
MARCIA SHERRILL MARCIA’S FAVORITE PLACES
HER CLOSET
A fashionable wardrobe wouldn’t be complete without equally dramatic storage! Marcia muses as to why showstopping closets are more than a practical necessity.
W
HEN I WAS A CHILD, our closets left much to be desired. We hung our clothes on a leftover piece of iron pipe and stashed our bulkier items on a wobbly top shelf. I may even remember my mother flinging open her accordion closet door once, and blindly tossing items of clothing inside. (A veritable gesture of organizational defeat!) Gradually, however, as the industry changed, contractors and (and their clients!) realized that organized closets could tame the chaos of everyday life, with perhaps the exception being those flimsy shoe-pouch hangers that were advertised on late-night television as “space savers.” When I moved to New York, closets were nearly half the 120
size of what I had grown up with in the South. And, that was unfortunate indeed—what’s a girl to do when there are sample sales too good to pass up? Who could say no to Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Roger Vivier selling shoes at 20 bucks a pair? The problem was, there just wasn’t enough space for all of my fashionable finds. Desperation finally led me to build a real, customdesigned closet of my own. I now luxuriate (maybe even salivate) in details like lined pull-out drawers for shoes of varying heights. And don’t forget satin boxes, cedar shelves and double-decker hanging rods. It looks and feels glorious. I will never again return to pipe rods and teetering shelves!
SARAH DORIO
Lee Kleinhelter’s custom walk-in closet is as showstopping as it is functional, featuring custom black cabinets, brass Tbar hardware, and art deco GP&J Baker wallpaper on the ceiling.
