AS WE PROD OUR HOMES INTO becoming the ultimate multitasker—reorganizing our spaces to accommodate everything from homeschool and ball fields to offices and private retreats—it’s clear that design is the key to creating spaces that are not only beautiful, but also ones that encourage, support and foster our well-being. In Buckhead, Angela Bromenschenkel employed equal parts color and calm in an oasis that provides a room of one’s own for everything from at-home date nights and lingering in the courtyard garden to children’s sleepovers and girl’s night in (page 66). For a second home on Sea Island, cultivating a personal paradise came easily to a couple inspired by memories of their honeymoon at the resort, and a happy-hued Will Huff delivered a bold but livable retreat perfect for privacy or entertaining alike (page 90). COMPLETE COHESION is clear right away in this contemporary courtyard-centric Buckhead renovation. Situated on a wooded lot that’s shielded from the bustle of Atlanta by a canopy of trees and the soothing sounds of a creek, the owners handed husband-wife design duo, architect J. Ryan Duffey and interior designer Nancy Duffey, a clear design brief: “Trim away the poorly designed French country cottage and turn it into a hip home with great light, easy access and a constant connection to the outdoors,” explains Ryan. “These owners wanted easy living. The kitchen, living room, porch and pool had to be part of their everyday experience. They requested bedrooms that feel like a boutique hotel.” Ryan set out creating a suitable floorplan to energize the free-flowing oasis of a home. The entry aligns with the striking corner steel bay window, which connects the pool and the porch. It’s a clear testament to the vacation ethos of this home, which becomes apparent at guests’ very first knock. 14

“This porch needed to be calm and filled with comfortable furniture that calls you to come sit ...” —Nancy Duffey Follow Coordinates right “The owners entertain often and did not want spaces cluttered,” says Nancy. The designer responded by mixing light furnishings with key grounding pieces. below A moody painting serves as a focal point in the living room. opposite, top to bottom A pair of custom lanterns defines the airy porch. Nancy was pulled into the decorating role early in the project—another crucial aspect for the seamless exterior and interior aesthetic of this home, which she dubbed California modern. The owners told Nancy that they wished to live with the doors open and to feel tucked away up in the trees. She responded with a light-handed, but strategic push and pull of light yet sculptural furnishings punctuated with pops of color, texture and bold artwork. When it came time to create the outdoor living area, Nancy designed the space with the fruits of Northern California top of mind. “This porch needed to be calm and filled with comfortable furniture that calls you to come sit and have a glass of wine.” Together, the architect and designer created a perfectly synchronized approach to a fresh style of urban retreat living. 16

Open Concept To keep the exterior of the home low-slung and California cool, Ryan created a unified roofline topped with a charcoal standing seam metal. “I wanted the roof to be simple and crisp,” he says. The horizontal window glazing underscores the openness of the home’s main level.

DESPITE THE MYRIAD of 2020 challenges, top Atlanta real estate professionals say the local market is solid. “Atlanta is one of the strongest in the nation, based on supply and demand, as well as the fundamentals of the market,” says HARRY NORMAN REALTORS CEO Jenni Bonura. She cites low inventory, relatively brief times for homes on the market and fewer price reductions as signs

that Atlanta’s “recovery period [from the pandemic] will be shorter than average.” The national economic challenges have also precipitated a dip in interest rates. “They have helped keep our market moving and are helping build momentum,” explains broker Jere Metcalf of JERE METCALF PARTNERS, part of Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International. She’s also noticed a slight shift in buyers’ preferences. “Now people are more focused on having a home office, outdoor space and floor plans that offer some private space,” likely as a result of recent shelter-in-place directives, Metcalf notes. Though there’s no crystal ball to predict the future of Atlanta’s real estate market, these industry leaders remain optimistic.

A Moveable Meal MEALS ON WHEELS ATLANTA (MOWA) delivers more than 500,000 meals each year to Atlanta seniors struggling with poverty, social isolation and food insecurity. The nonprofit, which started as a small soup kitchen in 1965, has outgrown its current facility and the team at DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN AND BATH STUDIO is leading the charge to build out a new kitchen and entertainment space. “It’s a natural fit for us,” explains the firm’s marketing director, Rachel Martin, who also serves on MOWA’s board. “Community involvement is something our entire team feels strongly about; we can all become actively involved in a project of the scale.” David Cook, one of Design Galleria’s designers, is managing the project, which will include engaging a local architect, builder and manufacturers to donate time, talent and materials. The new space tops out at 7,200 square feet of interior space, plus a courtyard and will serve as both a functional kitchen for making nutritious meals and an elegant venue for hosting events to raise funds. designgalleria.net; mowatl.org 20

WOMEN TRANSFORMING COMMUNITIES

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham LIKE MANY OTHERS, I spent a good deal of my time in quarantine organizing my closets, dresser drawers and file cabinets, a chore which always gives me a sense of satisfaction. Dead batteries, dried-up pens and old bills went directly into the trash, as did worn-out T-shirts and unflattering lipsticks. But there was one organizational task that I especially relished, and that was going through the many design magazine articles that I have clipped over the years. Looking through those old tear sheets took me on a journey through five decades of American design, and what I discovered is that with the exception of a few faddish detours here and there, my aesthetic preferences have changed very little over the years. One constant has been my ongoing admiration of legendary designers Mario Buatta, Albert Hadley, Sister Parish and Dan Carithers. I have saved so many articles featuring their work that I have entire file drawers dedicated solely to their careers. My tear sheet collection is also laden with pictures of home libraries, because I’ve always been a sucker for a room brimming with books. I even found quite a few 70s-era photos of chic interiors by designer Angelo Donghia. Needless to say, my brief flirtation with sexy 70s modernism didn’t last long, much like my disco-dancing days. Although I began my project intending to purge a portion of these magazine clippings, by the end of it, I found that I couldn’t part with a single one. To do so would be akin to throwing away a scrapbook of family photos, at least, to me anyway. Revisiting these old articles also served as a reminder of something else, and that is how much I value the many design magazines I’ve read over the years. If it weren’t for them, I would never have had the pleasure of getting to know the many designers whose work has brought me so much inspiration and joy.

NEIGHBORING THE ST. REGIS ATLANTA is a brand new page in the city’s restaurant book. It’s exactly what you might imagine as you read Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, but more than a fantasy, it’s living and breathing before your very eyes, enveloping guests in a blanket of whimsical sights the second they walk through the door. The Garden Room, which was designed by The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry and Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts, acts as the newest concept in the Tavistock Collection repertoire (also known for Atlas). A greenhouse-like glass enclosure surrounds the dining area, while garden details—trees wrapped in twinkling lights, animal topiaries and floral-themed artwork and fabrics—emulate the feeling of dining in the garden. “It’s a space that transforms from a serene environment during the daylight hours—sunlight casting through the overhead vines—to a more energetic vibe at night when the sun goes down and the music turns up,” says Lisa McGee, vice president of Construction & Design for Tavistock Restaurants. Mimicking the interiors’ colorful energy is the menu, created by the talented team of Garden Room chefs. It’s not uncommon to find edible flowers in your cocktail or a rainbow of ingredients plated like a piece of art, such as in the strawberry pistachio burrata or the “Smash Me” chocolate crémeux. “The dishes were created to be experiential, interactive and most importantly, delicious,” says McGee. “We are more than just tasty dishes and cocktails—we want to create memories and play with all the senses.” thegardenroomatlanta.com

As a welcome to new executive chef Raul Dominguez, BAR MERCADO at Krog Street Market has turned up the heat with a refresh of both their menu and their interiors. The new menu remains rooted in tapas-style dining with flavorful additions including empanadas, Caribbean BBQ ribs and more. Inside, a newly minted mural and more authentic design details transport guests to Latin America. barmercadoatl.com An oldie but most certainly a goodie, THE LITTLE TART BAKESHOP started out selling baked goods on a fold-up table, and has since evolved into an Atlanta staple. It’s that feel-good story you want to support, and the perfect epitome of “starting from scratch,” as the bakers may say. Chances are you’ve nibbled on one of their freshly baked seasonal pastries, but if you haven’t, run—don’t walk—to Krog Street Market to get your hands on their always delicious offerings. littletartatl.com If you hear a crunch while entering Krog Street Market, it’s probably coming from RICHARDS’ SOUTHERN FRIED HOT CHICKEN. A neighborhood favorite, the counter service restaurant is reminiscent of a 1930s diner and full of Southern flavor. Try “Richards’ Hot” wings for a classic, or mix it up with chicken and waffles for the perfect combination of spicy and sweet. richardssouthernfried.com

ABOUT THE PROPERTY Sprawling across nearly 300 acres of natural beauty and adjoining the Nantahala National Forest lies Silver Run Reserve, the location of the 2020 Cashiers Designer Showhouse (CDS). Silver Run was originally assembled by the civic-minded Neely family as a private family estate nearly 40 years ago. Located within the prestigious Southern corridor of Cashiers, Silver Run is in the midst of a revival as it’s transformed into a private, low-density, wonderfully amenitized mountain community. The 2020 Showhouse is a 3,000-square-foot mountain modern cottage, custom-designed by the renowned Meyer Greeson Paullin Benson architecture and design firm and built by Cashiers’ own Harris Custom Builders. With nature’s best views and close to the center of the community and The Lodge, the Showhouse is surrounded by tranquility and beauty. Leading local, regional and national interior designers will grace one of Cashiers’ most storied properties with a collective aesthetic vision for a once-in-a-lifetime Showhouse. The Cashiers Designer Showhouse is the Cashiers Historical Society’s signature fundraising event. In partnership with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, CDS raises vital funds to support our mission and cultural programming. COVID-19 Policy: As an organization committed to serving our community, we continue to monitor COVID-19 on a daily basis. Our events will remain in strict compliance with recommendations set forth by the state of North Carolina. Please visit our website for our up-to-date health and safety measures, which will be implemented to ensure we can offer a safe and hospitable experience for every single guest. 8

LETTER FROM THE

LETTER FROM THE

HONORARY DESIGNER

CHAIRMAN OF 2020 SHOWHOUSE

CHAIRMAN OF CHS

ABOUT KERRY HOWARD

Welcome! My name is Melissa Warren Hudson and I am honored to chair the 2020 Cashiers Designer Showhouse, the society’s annual fundraiser that plays an integral role in preserving the heritage of Cashiers through stewardship, advocacy and education. Celebrating and preserving Cashiers’ history for future generations is very close to my heart. With Cashiers roots going back to the 1930s and now raising my young family here, it is important to me that I help preserve Cashiers by supporting this vital organization. It is in this spirit that I am thrilled to introduce the 2020 Showhouse and encourage you to join us to ensure you can be a part of this summer’s must-see event. Without a doubt, Silver Run Reserve will be the best Showhouse Cashiers has ever seen. While festivities are kicking off later this year and things are a little different (please be sure to view our strict health measures on our website), we hope you will consider joining us at this remarkably transformed property. I want to thank everyone who has poured their heart into this important event. By visiting the Showhouse, you will make a significant impact in helping to ensure that Cashiers remains the town that we all know and love.

Hello friends! What a year! We will forever remember 2020. I am so happy to think that the Cashiers Historical Society’s 2020 Designers Showhouse will become a bright, shining beacon in an otherwise challenging year. The teamwork and comradery among the Silver Run Reserve team, the talented designers, vendors, in-kind sponsors, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and CHS can forever be used to define the term “dream team!” At the helm of this ship of dreams is Melissa Warren Hudson. She has flawlessly held the rudder during constant COVID-19 compass changes, always smiling, enthusiastic and driven. I will personally walk away from this year’s Showhouse with a much-loved new friend and perhaps coconspirator for future CHS adventures. Jay Hurt, Michael Fernandes, Liz Harris… we will be forever grateful for your help, kindness and generosity for sharing Silver Run with us. A magical place whose imprint on the Cashiers scene is much anticipated!

A South Carolina native, Kerry was called to Atlanta, Georgia after college where he founded his own full service interior design firm, KMH Interiors. He has been published in over 12 national and international publications throughout his career and has participated in over five show homes in the Southeast. Kerry found his way back home to South Carolina and onto the Tribus Interior Design team as our Principal. His skill is unsurmountable and his attention to the needs and desires of the client is always his first priority. The Cashiers Historical Society is thrilled to welcome Kerry as the 2020 Cashiers Designer Showhouse honorary guest designer! Kerry designed the master bedroom with his team at Tribus Interior Design. Visit the new Tribus and Dillard Jones Showroom and Office in Cashiers at 549 NC-107, Cashiers, North Carolina.

So, friends, be inspired, be entertained, be educated, be happy whilst being aware and responsible. Let’s enjoy this marvelous moment safely. Kirk Moore

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Various groups and individuals had long collected historical information relevant to Cashiers, but prior to 1996 there had never been an organized effort to preserve this history. In November of 1996, an organizational event was held at the Hanks House, and the enthusiasm convinced local historian Jane Nardy and others that their idea was here to stay. In December of 1996, the newly formed Cashiers Historical Society (CHS) became an affiliate of the Village Conservancy, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting projects that preserved and enhanced the history and village character of Cashiers. In late 1997, the first major project of CHS was born: the preservation of today’s Zachary-Tolbert House, an iconic 19th-century Mordecai Zachary House that now serves as a free public museum on the beautiful CHS grounds, which includes seven (yes, seven!) additional historical landmarks, trails and an heirloom garden honoring the history of our beloved Cashiers. The activities of the Cashiers Historical Society encourage people to stop, look and listen. A sense of community is strengthened and an appreciation of Cashiers’ heritage is kept alive through seasonal activities such as Founders Day, Heritage Apple Day, academic symposiums, oral histories, interpretive exhibits, historic site surveys, traditional workshops and demonstrations along with history rambles. K-12 history education has evolved into a natural priority for CHS with a wide variety of hands-on educational programs taking place throughout the year. We serve hundreds of local students on an annual basis, including all the local schools as well as the homeschool community. CHS’s mission is to preserve the heritage of the entire Cashiers Valley through stewardship, advocacy and education. This mission continues with a generous 2018 gift from High Hampton, the historic Hampton Schoolhouse. The structure was successfully moved from High Hampton to the CHS campus in 2018 and our organization just completed a comprehensive restoration of the building with the important purpose of offering a historic space for educational programming. We can’t wait for you to visit our campus and see our latest addition! Special thanks to Jennings Custom Homes, Ken Fisher, Sandi and Doug Rogers, and Marcia and John McCarley for bringing the Schoolhouse to life. Learn more about CHS at cashiershistoricalsociety.org. 22

Harris Custom Builders has been involved as a sponsor of the Cashiers Designer Showhouse event many times over the years, but are participating as the Showhouse builder for the first time this year. Quality and sophistication, distinctive colors and textures, an expert eye on scale and exceptional craftsmanship are the hallmarks of his style. Garden Party Angela Bromenschenkel’s main goal in the dining room was to create a “dining in the garden” environment. The ceiling is painted in Sherwin-Williams’ Sea Salt to resemble the sky, while garden panels by Mary Frances Estock reflect scenes from nature. And when the French doors are open, “If you close your eyes and feel the breeze, you’re immediately transported,” she says.

above left Bromenschenkel created a house that was cohesive, yet had different spaces for different moods. above right Thanks to landscape architect John Howard, a line of pleached European hornbeam trees welcomes guests as they approach the motor court, which was redesigned as a collaboration between Howard and architect Keith Summerour.

68

DESIGNER ANGELA BROMENSCHENKEL wasn’t looking to move ten years ago, but when she and her husband happened upon a quaint, French Normandy-inspired abode located just two streets down from where they lived in Haynes Manor, something ignited. Maybe it was the way it was perched atop a hill, trees dancing around, enveloping the home in a sea of green and offering the privacy that the Bromenschenkel’s then-home lacked. Or perhaps it was how the 9,500-square-foot home, though sizable, still felt approachable and welcoming—somewhere they could envision raising their twin boys. No matter the reason, it’s rightful to suggest the Bromenschenkels didn’t find their new home, their new home found them. “We thought, ‘Let’s just be wild and spontaneous,’” she explains. “The house had wonderful bones, a beautiful layout and so much potential for our family. We knew we could take it to the next level.”

Aged to Perfection Though the home was less than 10 years old when the Bromenschenkels moved in, they were drawn to how Summerour used materials that made the home appear as if it had stood for decades. The stucco and limestone exterior, zinc pots and overhang and potted boxwoods reect French Normandy style.

Second Chances Originally the living room featured existing pieces in neutral tones, but Bromenschenkel quips, “It was about as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal. It needed contrast.” That meant reupholstering furniture in light-reflective fabrics and introducing a giant antique mirror framed by Myott Studio to make the space appear larger and more welcoming.

71

Bromenschenkel.indd 71

Lightly Dressed Custom polished-nickel hardware, a deep graylacquered island and a glass fixture created by artist John Pomp reflect light—casting the kitchen with a subtle shimmer and, as Bromenschenkel describes, a hint of sexiness when night falls and lights are dimmed. “The shiny materials created this narrative that yes, it’s a beautiful classic kitchen, but it also has a contemporary kick to it.”

72

And it didn’t take long for the homeowners to hit the ground running. After selling nearly everything from their former English cottage, the Bromenschenkels enlisted their new home’s original architect, Keith Summerour, for individualized updates, including the addition of a screened porch and enclosing a grill patio, which became a sunny breakfast room. With a colorful blue-green grasscloth wallcovering and white banquette, it’s reminiscent of weekends at the beach. “Our happy place in the summer is Nantucket, so I wanted to have a bright, fresh, happy place to start our day in,” says Bromenschenkel. Though all of the spaces flowed well together, Bromenschenkel still wanted each room to have its own personality. The light and bright screened porch is a napping spot by day and date-night location by evening. However, the library leans masculine with tufted furniture and Benjamin Moore’s Witching Hour, a gray-blue, on the walls. “I

Natural Surroundings Centered around a photograph of a beach in Southern Portugal by Christian Chaize through Jackson Fine Art, the breakfast room drew inspiration from natural elements. A turquoise grasscloth wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries mimics ocean hues, while windows allow for views of the surrounding trees.

Private Oasis Before Howard began working on the formal garden, there was red clay covering the ground—preventing anything green from growing—and a cracked stucco retaining wall. Howard clad the wall in stone and introduced gas lanterns, charming boxwoods and limestone benches. A horse statue by Corbin Bronze with a young girl mounted atop with outstretched arms reminds Bromenschenkel of her childhood. “I grew up riding and jumping, and that’s exactly what it feels like. It’s like you’re flying.”

“This garden space is now an inviting entry, a lovely place to sit, and a major focal point from the adjacent interior rooms.” —John Howard 74

Rustic Touch With a mix of antiques and fresh finds on display, the family room serves as a quiet nod to designer Dan Carithers, who was both a friend and former mentor to Bromenschenkel (she worked for him in the late 1990s). “He used a lot of brown and white,” she says. “In fact, the antlers on our wall used to hang in his long room, so this space is almost like a wink to Dan.”

Plot Twist The library takes a masculine turn with tufted seating and rich blue-gray walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Witching Hour. The desk chair came from Bromenschenkel’s grandfather’s home in Holland. “It was a family piece that I wanted to give a new chapter, so I reupholstered it in Scalamandré’s Tiger velvet and placed it in the library.”

76

got a kick out of the name and said, ‘This is the room where I’ll sip wine and tell quiet secrets to my girlfriends,’” says Bromenschenkel. Outside, a major landscape renovation by landscape architect John Howard—which included the creation of a parterre garden featuring pea gravel paths with cobbled edges, dwarf boxwoods and hydrangeas—allows the gardens to become part of the interior storyline. “This garden space is now an inviting entry, a lovely place to sit and a major focal point from the adjacent interior rooms,” says Howard. And with 10 years now passed, that moment of spontaneity resulted in everything the Bromenschenkels didn’t know they were looking for. “It’s so wonderful to reminisce on when we first came into this home and made it our own. We’ve raised our boys here and it has carried us through a magical time in our life.” See Resources, Back of Book.

Double Duty Thanks to Summerour, the Bromenschenkels are able to enjoy the outdoors year-round with the addition of a screened porch. Walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray emulate bark on tree trunks while custom Bevolo gas lanterns provide intimate lighting for the couple’s at-home dinner dates.

A Soft Hand Farrow & Ball’s Pale Powder and tonal glazed linen draperies by Willard Pitt set a serene tone for “her” side of the master bathroom. The valence is reminiscent of the Dorothy Draper era, a period of design that Bromenschenkel greatly admires.

Full Retreat In the master bedroom, Bromenschenkel created a “room within a room” by using glazed linens in a soft palette on a canopy bed, emulating the sanctuarylike environment she desired. “When you walk in, the quietness envelops you and it’s like you’re putting a pause on life.”

HAPPY

MEDIUM With the help of his stylish friends who are the minds behind R HUGHES showroom, a savvy homeowner found himself at home in a polished country abode

Style Files opposite The antique Italian mirror over the fireplace “really does make the place,” says homeowner Jared Sapp, though he admits it took convincing to purchase. right The color of the vintage channeled velvet armchair was just right, says Ryan Hughes of R Hughes showroom, who mixed a Liaigre side table from R Hughes with a vintage coffee table. The side table overflows with plants; gardening is Sapp’s newfound passion.

Fresh Touches The wall-to-wall sheers nearly blend into the walls of the main room, which are painted Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White. Look closely to see Sapp’s plaster bull hanging on the range. “It’s a nice reminder that we are living on a farm,” he says. Hughes was excited to see these modern stools (Powell & Bonnell through R Hughes) in a more traditional setting outside of his showroom.

Corner Booth above, left to right Living just steps away from Serenbe’s medicinal garden has turned Sapp into an avid plant lover who incorporates greenery throughout his interiors and exteriors, as witnessed in the home’s side entry. opposite An L-shaped banquette upholstered in dark green vinyl by Pindler is the cornerstone of the breakfast room, which feels extra private when the curtain is drawn.

“I SAW THIS HOUSE on Serenbe’s Instagram feed one day. It just stood out,” says Ryan Hughes, founder of R Hughes showroom, who called his good friend and real estate agent Jared Sapp to go look at it. At the showing, Hughes convinced Sapp—who was not seriously in the market at the time—that this small brick cottage was just the escape Sapp needed. Even in Atlanta’s feistiest traffic, Sapp can get from his modern Midtown high-rise to this soulful spot in Serenbe’s Mado community in under an hour. Before Sapp had much time to question the idea, Hughes made a deal-sealing offer to oversee the decorating of the still under-construction home. He also volunteered the design services of his R Hughes partner, Steven Leonard. Both men are adamant that they are not decorators, but Hughes had a hunch about this house and the deal was done. Plus, “Jared made a solemn promise to let us run with it,” says Leonard. “I sell real estate for a living, but I had to let the reins go on this one and trust the designers, not the client,” says Sapp. Quickly things ensued, a darker finish on the floors was specified and the refrigerator was upgraded to a hidden panel front style. 85

6/23/20 2:43 PM

Luxe Layers The artwork, dresser, chair and ottoman are from R Hughes’ Lost & Found collection. The runner, pictured and opposite, matches the Moattar rug in the living room. “We loved the linen texture, but it was too big so we cut it up to use throughout the house,” says Hughes.

Ruby Red The giant red metal light fixture was found in the basement of an antiques store and turned into the master bedroom’s light fixture. “At night it glows like a giant red orb against the green Phillip Jeffries grass cloth walls,” says Sapp.

87

RHughes.indd 87

6/23/20 2:43 PM

Hidden Identity Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe is “a dark, mysterious color that’s kind of a blue and kind of green,” says Hughes, who applied it to the guest room walls. right Sapp created a gallery wall to display the female oil portraits that he collects from his travels. The scowling woman in the floral dress started off the whole collection. “I found her in Lacoste, France. There are a lot of emotions and moods here, which is a nice reminder that everyone has a story to tell,” he says.

RHughes.indd 88

Then the three friends began the interiors process. Privacy was a concern, and Leonard devised the idea to drape both sides of the main room in simple white sheers. “That really helped define the space,” says Hughes, who had long admired the channeled sofa from Dixon Rye. “Green just felt like the right color,” he explains of the fitting choice for the agrarian setting that he pulled all through the small house with contrasting splashes of saffron and mustard. The best part of designing with your friends? Getting margaritas at Superica before going shopping for finds. “It was important to me that the house felt collected and acquired, which is hard to do in six months,” says Hughes. The happy client admits: “There’s a lot of personality in here and it’s so comfortable.” See Resources, Back of Book.

POWERFUL POPS OF COLOR are balanced by crisp white notes and tailored lines in this artfully designed Sea Island cottage. “The series of citrus paintings by Laura Powell Smith hanging above a turquoise banquette were the inspiration for the interiors,” says Atlanta designer Will Huff of Huff-Dewberry, Inc. The paintings feature a blue background with zesty tones of lemon, orange and lime outlined in black—a creative element Huff deftly replicated in the design details by hanging brightly colored draperies from thin black iron rods. This vibrantly colored, yet elegantly composed residence was created for an empty nester couple whose love of Sea Island began with their honeymoon. After many years of renting vacation homes, this house captured their sights with its blue shutters and River Oak-framed facade. Built in 1974, the house features high beamed ceilings, herringbone brick and tabby floors, and a beautiful pine mantel in the great room—all original architectural features that the owners wanted to preserve. “The proportions of the great room fit today’s lifestyle, so the only significant architectural change we made was designing a new kitchen within the original footprint, and one that feels original to the house,” says Huff.

Custom linens by Jane Wilner dress the custom-finished bamboo headboard by Louis J. Solomon.

While maintaining the architectural integrity was paramount, the owners desired a beach house that felt fresh, current and colorful, but neither trendy nor cliché. Additionally, they asked to incorporate antiques from their primary home into this vacation home, including a few special mementoes such as the carved table in the great room that was purchased on their honeymoon. Appreciating the owner’s request for color and art, Huff integrated both into every space. “I envisioned the entire dining room wrapped in a watercolor painting, and the Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was the perfect wallcovering,” says Huff. A contemporary starburst mirror, a 19th-century English sideboard, and a mid-century modern turquoise lamp create an eclectic vignette, yet one that’s in harmony with the pattern of the wallpaper. Less obvious, but equally transformative, Huff painted the original ceiling beams light blue in order to create a lighter palette reflective of the coastal lifestyle and one that relates to the exterior shutters. The house is ideally proportioned for two people, yet it has ample space to accommodate large gatherings. From the guest house, to the courtyard, to the pool, there are plenty of areas for rest and relaxation. Sunrise and sunset are always beautiful at the beach, but in this colorful cottage, an array of art mixed with a profusion of bright fabrics and cherished antiques creates the stylish seaside canvas. See Resources, Back of Book.

LIFE

END NOTE

BUT WHERE’S THE SOFA? GROWING UP WITH a nationally renowned antiques and art dealer, I was accustomed to an ever-revolving collection of beautiful things at home. Our mother, Deanne Deavours (formerly Levison), owned her eponymous shop on Peachtree while also commanding a massive presence on Fifth Avenue in New York for Israel Sack, and counted museums, major collectors and preeminent designers among her clients. But we never had a sofa. Or a club chair. Or a coffee table. Our home featured period Windsor chairs, Chippendale chairs, gracious wing chairs, paint-decorated Federal chairs with original rush seats and one long primitive bench—exactly none of which are comfortable after 30 minutes, and thereby ensuring that we did not lounge for too long. We were in possession of rare crossstretcher base tables, sawbuck tables and Early American Southern stands, but never a coffee table. If Dan Carithers or Jackye Lanham called on behalf of a client, pieces would evaporate from the house. However, it was evident that those clients agreed with us on this: That primitive bench would be a ridiculously uncomfortable substitute for a sofa; and since it was never selected, it moved all about the house, filling 104

various spots and always leaving us wondering where it would land. Mom eschewed things she considered “common,” “collectible,” or “fussy.” Things that fell into the latter category were: crystal chandeliers, figurines, floral draperies and upholstery. However, eventually mom acquiesced and we placed a Lawson sofa in the playroom (the only room with a television). Please note that Mom didn’t buy the sofa; our neighbors gave it to us when they retired to Hilton Head. There was never a coffee table, but one can live without a coffee table more easily than one can live without a sofa. When I graduated from college, the first thing I purchased was a Schumacher sofa upholstered in a plush velvet. Mom was aghast that my first purchase would be new upholstery, but since my first coffee table was handmade from the American Craft Council, the blow was softened a bit. Currently, neither Mom nor I own a coffee table, but we each have a comfortable sofa—though Mom only bought hers for guests. In today’s world, these are good problems and ones with which most of the trade can identify: the thrill of the hunt, the desire to give clients the very best (even if it’s one’s own), and the knowledge that there’s always another jewel waiting to be discovered.
