AS SUMMER’S LAZY DAYS begin to pass through the rearview mirror, I’m feeling the need to harness that rejuvenating feeling that can only be induced by an indulgent holiday—in hopes that it may carry me through the end-of-year madness. Sure, it’s only September, but the holidays will be here before we know it, a fact we’re often reminded of as we undergo construction for our annual Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Home for the Holidays Showhouse, which opens November 20th. But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let us focus on the present. Our September issue, in the words of Dorothy Draper, proves that decorating is fun, as proven by some of the city’s top talents in “Bold and Bright” (page 82), as well as by a wildly imaginative dinner party for design-industry VIPs (page 98). Also opening this month is our secondannual Serenbe Designer Showhouse, which debuts in the community’s Grange neighborhood. Finally: please allow the AH&L editorial team to introduce our freshly renovated website, atlantahomesmag.com. We’ve spent a good deal of our personal downtime this summer envisioning ways to recreate the magazine’s experience for our online visitors—and are eager to share Elizabeth Ralls its reimagined goodness. A GREAT MIGRATION It’s safe to say that R HUGHES’ new Smith Hanesdesigned showroom at ADAC—complete with reclaimedwood floors, plaster, white lacquer and antiqued glass

Here, anchor brands Ochre, Jean de Merry, Apparatus and Coup d’Etat mix with new arrivals like Dmitriy & Co. upholstery and accent pieces from Natasha Baradaran, “a small, glamorous collection from L.A.,” says owner Ryan Hughes. High Ground ARETÉ, an enchanting collection of lighting, accessories and furnishings cast in plaster, bronze, gilt, marble and bisque porcelain debuted this spring at BUNGALOW CLASSIC. A collaboration between George Sellers—a classically trained sculptor, artist and illustrator—and retail mogul Bradley Clifford, pieces are produced by hand in the duo’s Dallas studio. Recent releases include marble Balustrade tables inspired by Villa d’Este, featuring Areté’s signature compass rose motif. Expect animal-skin textures (rhino, croc, elephant) for fall. Some places create great stories. Others make history.
Wonder is indigenous here, just like the ancient, moss-draped oaks and serenely winding rivers. Here, in South Carolina Lowcountry, land and architecture resonate with the grace of a bygone era, where families create indelible memories of their own. Along with reďŹ ned cottages, suites and homes, guests savor a remarkable alliance of nature and pastimes, such as kayaking through salty marshes. Perfecting tennis and golf swings. Exploring pristine trails on horseback — or the locally inspired menus of our restaurants and spa. At The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, not only is history at every turn. It’s always in the making. In conversation with:
Mary McDonald
The Los Angeles–based, Parsons-educated former milliner—now an iconic American designer—had already released a lamp line with Robert Abbey by the time her turn on Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators made her a household name. McDonald’s inaugural collections of fabrics for F. Schumacher & Co. and rugs for Patterson Flynn Martin (both available at ADAC) launched during the show’s original run, while a line of elegant furnishings for Chaddock debuted at High Point in spring 2014. After more than a year of waiting, we’re delighted that the pieces have debuted locally at Mathews Furniture + Design (as have her second, South Seas–inspired fabric collection for Schumacher at ADAC). Charmed, we asked the doyenne to expound upon the pieces she’s most excited about bringing to our city—plus her favorite spots to frequent. WRITTEN BY Kate

1. PERFECT PRINTS As digital technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, top-of-the-line graphics and richer, more resilient inks are changing the tile game, as with Mirage Privilege in Sunrise. From $1,500 per panel; specialtytile.com

the tile-as-art examples unveiled by Street & Smith. Other new introductions mimicked old-world mosaics (like Natucer), but without the intricate assemblages. Long, wide plankstyle tiles gained momentum, giving the appearance of authentic weathered wood, cork (from Verve Ceramics) and even patinated metals (as with Torrecid). 2. BOLD
GOLD
Gone are gaudy gilts of decades past, making way for gleaming options that serve more

as high-fashion accents than megaphones for glamour and wealth. Consider Crossville’s side-view glass bars and mosaics, the 3-D hexes of Apavisa’s Gold Illusion Nanoforma series or Aparici’s Cayenne tile in Neutral Gold Rigato. 3. TACTILE TEXTURES We’re supremely attracted to the intriguing new takes on tactility, from braille-like dots adorning 3-D waves, ripples and damasks (as in Soho Studio Corp’s Masia Jewel series) to TAU’s minimalist geometrics (most notably the high-gloss Greta). Also noteworthy: the look of tweed textiles on printed porcelain (Ceramica Sant’Agostinos’ DIGITALART) and lace-like porcelain reliefs (Aparici’s Zoe tile achieved this brilliantly). 4. MARBLE
IMITATORS With Italian quarries reportedly tapping out at a rate faster than nature can replenish, many tile companies—particularly producers of ceramics and porcelains— are responding with dupes of the in-demand veined material that make a convincing impression of Calacatta marble. A few favorites: Interceramic, Marmoker, StonePeak Ceramics and Fincibec. 5. MAKING WAVES Numerous makers were inspired by ripples and undulations—reminiscent of serene streams and roaming rivers. Fluid motifs cropped up in ceramic, porcelain and stone from vendors such as Petra Antiqua, Newker Admix multi tiles in Material Grey. $16 per square meter; newkerceramic.com
Ceramiche Piemme and Vallelunga & Co., whose porcelain Calacatta VI creation by Giovanni Barbieri made a mean imitation of gray-veined marble.

Naomi Von Habersham FOR YEARS, I PRIDED MYSELF on being on-trend. Few design fads came on the scene without my indulging in them. Midcentury modern, minimalism, the English country house look—I have lived with them all. But for the past few years, I have been utterly off-trend because most of the prevailing styles have left me feeling, well, left out in the cold. Take, for example, dining. If a restaurant was decorated with rough-hewn wood, galvanized steel and industrial light fixtures, it was “in.” So, too, were those establishments that proffered small-batch bourbons, small plates and earsplitting decibel levels. Now, before anyone gets apoplectic, let me stress that there is nothing wrong with these trends. They’re just not me. I prefer Champagne cocktails over artisanal bourbon, polished—not rough—wood and a pleasant din rather than a roar. And, if some of Atlanta’s recent restaurant openings are any indication, it seems that I’m not alone. Glamour and luxury are slowly creeping back into the restaurant scene, and I, for one, am grateful. And can someone please explain to me the recent design trends of oversized furniture, steampunk and industrial chic? (I also don’t understand the beard-and-tattoo look that is so popular these days, but that’s beside the point.) Yet again, it seems that I’m the polar opposite, pining instead for delicate furniture, graceful interiors and good old-fashioned elegance. But change is in the air. Supersized furniture is being scaled down to normal proportions (finally), and after years of being eclipsed by all things hip and edgy, refinement and sophistication are starting to find favor again. Lucky for us, today’s state of design no longer seems to be ruled by only one dominant style. Instead, it feels more like a design democracy, one that is again brimming with choices. No matter if your look is edgy, well-mannered, traditional, contemporary or somewhere in between, there are at long last options that can suit all tastes, from small-batch bourbon and rustic-chic furniture to Champagne cocktails and swanky interiors.

The team behind Decatur’s The Pinewood are bringing their creative libations to Midtown’s PONCE CITY
MARKET this fall with their cocktailfocused American restaurant THE MERCURY. Designed by Square Feet Studio, the 4,400-square-foot restaurant will include a main dining room, an indoor patio and a bar area. The menu will showcase a raw bar and seasonal produce, as well as a midcentury-inspired cocktail selection. themercuryatl.com After serving as Veni Vidi Vici’s executive chef for more than 20 years, chef Jamie Adams is launching a new Italian eatery, GIALLO OSTE-

LETTER FROM SERENBE’S FOUNDERS If you want to change the world, start in your own backyard. We discovered the property now known as Serenbe on a weekend outing to introduce our children to the Georgia countryside in 1991. Over the course of the next three years, we found that our time on the weekends and time together as a family brought us peace and serenity. So in 1994 we moved to the farm full time and stepped off the insatiable treadmill of life. In 2000, we recognized the need to protect the woods and lands that had become our home. That journey has led us to become placemakers, where we are rediscovering what it means to build community and create place, to think about life as a piece of art where we can bring beauty to the small moments in life. It has always been extremely important to
marie & steve nygren SERENBE FOUNDERS
our family to celebrate the arts. From the lampposts in the Selborne neighborhood to the site-speciďŹ c outdoor theater of Serenbe Playhouse, our goal is to integrate the arts into every aspect of life here at Serenbe. We are excited to invite you to visit the 2015 Serenbe Designer Showhouse, and to stay for a meal, a weekend or to call it home for a lifetime.

ABOUT SERENBE
“A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes well-being as natural as nature itself.” Serenbe is pioneering a new community model connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes well-being as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests

and meadows with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past. Each of the four neighborhoods will have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a welllived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for well-being and education for awareness. Year-round cultural events include outdoor theater from Serenbe Playhouse,
culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a spa and trail riding, plus a robust Artist in Residence program featuring dinners, open studios and talks. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fig trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend or stay for a lifetime.

THE ARTS AT SERENBE
serenbe artist in residence program (AIR) The non-profit Serenbe Artist in Residence program provides artists of the highest caliber uninterrupted time and space in which to create. Invited artists are provided studio, housing, a stipend and a deeply interested and supportive community at Serenbe. Since its inception in 2007, over 35 artists have participated in AIR residencies and have contributed hundreds of days of art and culture to the community. Notable past artists have included Paul Vallinksi, Lora-Faye Whelan, Cornelia Conrads, Bernice McFadden, Sarah Kay, Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston. Learn more at airserenbe.com.

serenbe institute The Serenbe Institute for Art, Culture & the Environment is a non-profit organization that exists to make Serenbe a community that passionately explores, embraces and expands the connections between nature, culture and the art of living. The Serenbe Institute develops, incubates, presents and facilitates a wide range of programs and events furthering its mission to cultivate our community’s creative, intellectual and ecological qualities. Today the Institute supports the following programs at Serenbe: outdoor theatre with plays and musicals, artist residencies, intimate musical performances, lectures, artist dialogues, a renowned fellows program, film screenings, photography, concerts, films in the wildflower meadow, cabarets, theatre camps, education, visiting authors and playwrights and public art. Since its inception in 2004, the Institute has established Serenbe Film, Serenbe Fellows, The Serenbe Playhouse and Serenbe Artist in Residence (AIR) which all have a full slate of annual programming.
Serenbe Playhouse is a year-round, site-specific outdoor theatre at Serenbe and believes that theater is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience, and honors this by producing artistically rich, open-air theatrical performances for audiences throughout Metro Atlanta. By reducing the barriers between audiences and actors, the playhouse provides numerous opportunities for engagement, conversation and collaboration. Serenbe Playhouse is a pioneer in modeling Green Theater Practices by producing plays with a commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship. Learn more at serenbeplayhouse.com.
serenbe film Serenbe Film brings together people who enjoy and appreciate the art of film. Offering special screenings, filmmaker discussions and one-of-a-kind film events for adults and children. Annual events include Shorts at Sundown, drive-in movies in the Wildflower Meadow, special themed dinner screenings and a partnership with The Atlanta Film Festival. Learn more at serenbefilm.com.
serenbe fellows Serenbe Fellows sponsors residencies by eminent scholars, such as sociologists, experts in urban planning and design, environmental and social sustainability. The scholars interact with residents through presentations, workshops and seminars, providing insights into issues of particular importance to Serenbe and the surrounding community. *Visit serenbeinstitute.com for more information. 19

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY the art farm at serenbe Serenbe was designed with the arts in mind, including The Art Farm, a 40-acre complex that serves as the central place for artists, the arts and culture at Serenbe. The aspiration is to convene and house multiple artists at a time, and The Art Farm is a response to this need and creates an essential physical place for the arts at Serenbe. The Art Farm is collaborating with Rural Studio to construct the first wave of live-work artist cottages. Rural Studio is an off-campus design-build program of Auburn University, established in 1993 by D.K. Ruth and Samuel Mockbee to give architecture students a hands-on educational experience. The artist cottages are based on Rural Studio’s 20K House project that began in 2005 as a research project to address the need for affordable housing, provide an alternative to the mobile home and accommodate potential homeowners who are unable to qualify for commercial credit. The objective of The Art Farm Rural Studio collaboration is to design and build an affordable home that can be reproduced and commercialized to bring affordable housing to the mainstream. The net proceeds from the 2015 Serenbe Designer Showhouse will directly benefit this initiative at The Art Farm. The first cottages are set for completion in Fall 2015. These 500-square-foot cottages are constructedby local builder Simon Shell with interiors designed by prominent Atlanta-based interior designers Steve McKenzie of Steve McKenzie’s and Kerry Howard of KMH Interiors, current ASID President and 2014 Serenbe Showhouse Designer. Bold strokes of color and richly expressive pattern struck a chord in the interior spaces of the William T.
Baker-designed Château Soleil, the site of the 45th Annual Atlanta Symphony Associates’ DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE & GARDENS. “In a room this size, everything doesn’t have to be for comfort,” says Michel Boyd of the lofty living room. “Indulge yourself and also fill it with items that are purely sculptural and can be admired.”

LIVING ROOM, SMITH BOYD INTERIORS Interior designer Michel Boyd decided to reimagine the living room as a formal salon with an eclectic edge. Given the room’s grand proportions, he divided the space in two with the help of a chic Poliform table, creating multiple seating groups amid a color palette of rich jewel tones. On one side, a sleek chaise, sculptural gold chair and classic tufted ottoman are as eye-catching as the gallery wall filled with contemporary art and antique portraiture. At the opposite end, a 82
shapely Aerin coffee table serves as the perfect complement to the mohair sofa’s graceful lines. “A lot of my work is a study in merging genres,” says Boyd in reference to the room’s mix of traditional and modern. “I see value in design past and present, and I wanted to show that they can go together in the same room.”

STUDY, PARKER KENNEDY LIVING An iconic 1969 photograph of Pauline de Rothschild’s chinoiserie-clad bedroom walls for Vogue UK inspired Lance Jackson and David Ecton’s design for the study. But in true Parker Kennedy Living fashion, the designers went bold and bright in their modernday interpretation. A vibrant Fromental wallcovering led the charge, while a glossy green ceiling and colorful accessories further enhanced the room’s lively aesthetic.
Known for their vintage furniture restoration, the duo repurposed a dining table into a desk, fitting it with a mirrored top and applying a crisp lacquer finish. A vintage fretwork sofa purchased in Palm Beach also received a fresh look with a Robert Allen cheetah print. “In our designs, every piece has a purpose and story behind it,” says Jackson. “It gives great meaning to a room.” 85

MASTER SUITE, ROBERT BROWN INTERIOR DESIGN When designing this master suite, Robert Brown simply envisioned himself in the space. “I wanted to be true to myself and fill it with pieces that I would personally select for my own home,” he says. The substantial dimensions also helped guide Brown in the design of the room, where he created distinct zones for a cozier ambience. He began with the tailored canopy bed, swathed in a Holland & Sherry white wool with custom embroidery. An elegant writing desk that the designer acquired in Paris holds court by a stately antique mirror that underlines the room’s masculine appeal with strong lines. “This room was really a reflection of my aesthetic,” says Brown.

GUEST BEDROOM, MELANIE TURNER INTERIORS Designer Melanie Turner tackled the design of the guest bedroom with a “what’s old is new again” approach. She began by keeping the room’s existing blue-and-white chinoiserie wallpaper but complemented it with rich emerald greens and acid yellows for a bolder, fresher look. Meanwhile, a classic leopard-print rug helps neutralize the space. Turner also gave new life to an antique Chippendale console 88
by refinishing it with a striking malachite top and using it to hold a collection of blue-andwhite porcelain. Custom pagoda-inspired window treatments add a dose of whimsy, while reflective elements such as the gold hammered bed, vintage mirrors and unique Bunny Williams gilt drink table up the style quotient. “There’s nothing better than a room that feels collected,” says Turner.

HER BATHROOM, ROLLINS INGRAM Thibaut’s Helena print takes center stage in this luxurious ladies bath. Danielle Rollins boldly repeated the pattern on the walls, drapery and custom ottoman, giving the space an intimate ambience. Blue-and-white fine art paintings and porcelain accessories play up the room’s color scheme, while a graceful Oslo chandelier adds a dose of French flair. “We spend so much time in our bathrooms that they deserve a little luxury,” says Rollins. To that end, she selected Kohler’s VibrAcoustic tub that produces air bubbles through the vibration of music. “It’s almost like bathing in Champagne,” she says.

GUEST BEDROOM & BATHROOM, PATRICIA MCLEAN INTERIORS Describing the aesthetic of this guest suite as “au courant Southern,” Patricia McLean wholeheartedly embraced 94
traditional design. The classic design scheme was inspired by a documentary French floral fabric by Duralee, which was used on the custom window treatments, club chairs and regal tester bed. “The teal border
is nondirectional, so I could turn the fabric and use it just about everywhere,” explains the designer. The pattern also informed McLean’s spring color palette, which she extended to the bath. Here, bamboo-in-
spired wallpaper and gauzy linen drapes provide a tranquil backdrop for enjoying the luxe soaking tub. In both spaces, antiques and artwork creating a space that’s sure to stand the test of time.

D DON’T PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD was just one of the rules broken at a special dinner held at the Atlanta home of creative powerhouses Mark and Cinda Boomershine following the 2015 Design Bloggers Conference (DBC). Play, in fact, was precisely what former Woodfire Grill chef Tyler Williams and design-media authority Adam Japko had in mind as they planned the evening’s artfully designed dinner. Founded by Japko six years ago, DBC is held each spring and celebrates the intersection of interior design and new media. No stranger to cultivating inspiration—from magazines to digital platforms, including his own wine blog, WineZag—Japko seized on the opportunity to creatively interpret his tech-minded thought process into a night that was equal parts far-reaching and fun. The venue: Cinda and Mark Boomershine’s swoon-worthy Buckhead abode. Creative forces in their own right—Mark is a high-voltage pop artist, and Cinda, the brains behind the Cinda B line of handbags and travel accessories—the pair graciously opened their bold and bright home to more than 35 design-industry VIPs for what proved to be an unforgettable evening. Tyler Williams, an innovative, Atlanta-based chef who has made culinary waves with his work at Abattoir and Woodfire Grill, says he was thrilled when Japko, a longtime customer, approached him about headlining this particular dinner. “Tyler’s massive creativity has an intellectual foundation that always makes things completely appropriate and on point,” says Japko. “When we visited with the Boomershines at their home, I

watched the wheels turning in his head. Knowing we would be hosting interior-design professionals, and that Mark is an artist of profound talent, could have been a daunting task, but Tyler completely pulled it together, including my thoughts on wine pairings from my cellar.” And, while it is Williams’s habit to present each plate with an artist’s eye, these dishes were especially ornate. Inspired by artists like Mondrian, Rothko, Pollock and Warhol, Williams, along with artist Steven Fant, set out to design each course as an homage to modern art icons. Carefully planned sketches—worthy of a frame themselves—diagramed the arrangement of each course. Plates proved the ultimate canvas, and exquisite ingredients served as the medium. A Pollock-inspired smattering of seeds, grains, lentils and ink—showered with edible petals—served as a first course. Wild game terrine was tiled out with pickled root vegetables and mustard to become a Mondrian, while a cioppino of black bass, calamari and fennel was served in Warhol-inspired soup cans. The Rothko-esque entrée wowed guests with stacked cuts of a New York strip, potato pave, wild mushroom, aspic, carmelized onion and thyme; a Calder-style dessert featured pineapple, blood orange, white chocolate and coconut. Equally as compelling as this inimitable fare were the wine pairings selected by Japko, who educates the masses about wine through his blog. His selections led guests around the world in a brilliant tour of sake, Loire Valley Gamay, Austrian blaufränkisch, Bordeaux and petit manseng. Even the tablecloths honed in on the theme, which were hand-painted by Mark, while colorful artist’s manikins—holding single blossoms and placed at each table—were a subtle nod to the molding of inspired minds. When festivities came to a close, guests were gifted with Cinda’s new “b Luxe” cosmetic bag, and, from the chef, a puffy-grained chocolate square—the proverbial cherry on top for these prolific power players. 103

AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA landed in New Orleans, it brought winds of change all the way to East Lake, Georgia, when Jared Paul (owner of ADAC showroom paul +) and his relatives—longtime residents of the area—opened up one of the family’s investment properties tucked away near the legendary East Lake Golf Club as temporary housing to hurricane victims. Once it was vacated, Paul and his partner Kelley Harris, owner of Hint | Harris Interiors, launched into remodeling the structure, eventually deciding to purchase the property and make it their permanent home. “When your closest neighbor is one of the oldest golf courses in the country, you become spoiled not having to look at any neighbors,” says Paul. “Besides, they keep up their yard really well,” he adds. Paul and Harris, who both have established design careers, brought contrasting aesthetics to the process. Paul loves contemporary and gravitates towards kitsch, while Harris is known for his traditional designs. However, the two share a love of American primitive furniture and contemporary paintings by Georgia artists. “Creating our home has
been a merger where we’ve blended our different collections for a cohesive whole,” says Harris. Filled with an array of 19th-century antiques, midcentury modern furniture and contemporary art, the house has evolved into a multilayered expression of two exceptionally creative designers whose often-disparate tastes collide to create an engaging and eclectic interior. In the entry, a huntboard from Madison, Georgia, serves as the resting place for a Philippe Starck AK-47 lamp, “an ode to old East Lake,” quips Paul. Harris’s 19th-century Pennsylvania Dutch star quilt becomes a contemporary centerpiece when hung above the 1970s Herman Miller modular seating in an upstairs guest room. Objects as diverse as a Concorde landing light, Steve Rubell’s lamp from Studio 54, and a Jody Fausett photo meld seamlessly among the reupholstered wing chairs from Davidson’s department store and an antique Alabama tea table. The master bedroom is a cocoon of brown worsted wool and leather, and contemporary nightstands nest beside a pair of midcentury modern armchairs. “I had an all-black bed109

room, and I never liked the color green before I met Kelley, but he’s brought color and light into my life. So now we’re a brown and green couple throughout the house,” says Paul. The result is a deftly orchestrated balance of substance and style in the form of antique, mass-produced and highly personal pieces—a place where saturated neutrals provide definition, and allow this melange of forms and genres to create a harmonious mix. 110
“There’s a place for everything in this house,” adds Harris. And that includes the pair’s cats. Whether they’re lounging on the bed or sprawled across the huntboard, felines Frankie and Linus are certainly comfortable among this mingling of styles. Now known as the Katrina House, the home represents a shift from the historic and traditional to the modern and democratic in one captivating, fluid sweep. See Resources, Back of Book.

AN OPEN-AIR PAVILION NEAR THE EDGE OF A POND at Serenbe in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia, is buzzing as tablecloths are snapped into place and ice buckets brimming with beverages are set down with a slosh. From fields filled with parked cars, a parade of folks carrying casserole dishes and bowls are heading toward the pavilion. What appear to be members of a large family gathering are actually Atlanta’s beloved chefs toting their favorite recipes—soon to be served on the groaning table at an event benefiting Wholesome Wave Georgia. There are many great food events in Atlanta these days— perhaps too many—but the chefs and diners who participate in The Southern Chefs Potluck at Serenbe claim it as their favorite. It’s a day when chefs can serve their choice of vegetable sides, pickles and desserts potluck-style, and then sit down among their own families as well as ticket holders to enjoy the meal. It’s a time of fellowship in addition to being a fundraiser for a worthy cause. Wholesome Wave Georgia works to provide all Georgians with access to fresh, nutritious, locally grown food. Community members who rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits are now able to use their EBT cards (food stamps) at local farmers markets, where they have access to a wide selection of organic food. Each SNAP dollar spent at Wholesome Wave partner markets throughout Georgia is turned into $4: each dollar is turned into $2, doubling the buying power for the shopper. The 2014 event was a wild success, raising a record-breaking $118,000 for Wholesome Wave Georgia, which translates into $236,000 worth of local, sustainable food benefits that will help more families afford fresh, healthy produce from community farmers markets. The Southern Chefs Potluck is more than simply another culinary-themed fundraiser; it has become a family reunion— a diverse family of food-loving folks gathered around one table to eat well and do good. The 6th Annual Southern Chefs Potluck will be held on September 13, 2015; visit wholesomewavegeorgia.org. 115

POTATO GRATIN WITH MUSHROOM GRAVY Recipe by Chef E. J. Hodgkinson of King + Duke SERVES 6
Potato Gratin 2 tablespoons butter, softened 1 pound russet potatoes 1 pound sweet potatoes 1 quart heavy cream salt pepper 2 shallots, finely diced ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese ½ cup grated Grana Padano cheese (or Parmesan) Note: This dish can be made with just russet potatoes or just sweet potatoes. Any mixture of mushrooms can be used for the gravy, but it is important to have shiitake because of the meaty flavor and texture. The gravy can be made vegetarian with vegetable stock. Preheat oven to 250°F. Butter a 9 x 11-inch baking dish. Peel and slice the potatoes 1/8 inch thick, placing them directly in the heavy cream, in another dish, as you slice them. Put a single layer of potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish, overlapping them slightly. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and some of the shallots. Combine the two cheeses, and sprinkle a layer of cheese over the shallots. Start overlapping another layer of potatoes, salt, pepper, shallots and cheese. Repeat with another layer of each until you run out of potatoes and cheese. You should have 3 layers, but if you use a different size dish, you may have more. Gently pour the cream over the gratin until the liquid comes about halfway up. Place the dish in the oven and bake for about 40 minutes or until you can easily pierce the potatoes with a knife. Turn the broiler on to brown the cheese, keeping a very close eye on it. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.
Mushroom Gravy
MAKES ABOUT 2 QUARTS 1 pound shiitake and cremini mushrooms ½ cup butter (1 stick), kept cold 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 quarts chicken or vegetable stock, chilled 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Thinly slice all of the mushrooms. Place the cold butter and mushrooms in a cold sauté pan, and place over low heat. When the butter is melted, turn the heat up to medium-high, add the flour and stir to create a bit of a paste, cooking until the flour mixture starts to turn a little brown and starts to emit a nutty aroma, 2 to 3 minutes. Pour in 1½ quarts of the cold stock, reserving about 2 cups in case you need more liquid to thin down the gravy. Stir vigorously to incorporate, turn down the heat to medium and add the thyme and parsley. Cook for another couple of minutes, and then remove from the heat and add the salt, pepper and lemon juice. Keep warm, and serve with the gratin.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED For an area that is only 150 miles long and 50 miles wide, the country of Panama overflows with surprises. Gina Christman WRITTEN BY
SLEEK AND MODERN are not words readily associated with Panama City, Panama, but the downtown skyline might surprise you. Miami-esque in glamour, with massively tall buildings and swaying palm trees, the cityscape seems to symbolize this Central American city’s desire to play the leading role assigned to it by history. A century as “the crossroads of the world’’ has formed Panama into a remarkably diverse society. Although it has fewer than four million people, American, Arab, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Jewish and West Indian communities have added their customs, cuisine and languages to the underlying mix of Spanish, African and Indian influences. In sync with this exciting diversity and colorful environment, there is a nascent cultural, tourism-driven push and visiting Panama right now couldn’t be more exciting. And, travel is virtually painless as English is widely spoken, the American dollar is the country’s currency and, with year-round, Miami-like weather, packing is a breeze. Exploring downtown’s bustling urban scene and glittering nightlife should be on your dance card, but to experience it from a more secluded home base, head to Playa Bonita or “pretty beach”— a compact beach resort area across the Bridge of Americas and
just minutes from downtown. As you head down a winding road through a rainforest, The Westin Playa Bonita Panama, looming beyond the white stucco walls and down a lushly landscaped driveway, is sleek, and it’s modern, and then some. The resort is luxurious in every way you want it to be, and none of the ways you don’t. On one side, the main building hugs a shell beach, showing off a full mile of Pacific Ocean, and on the other, a lush rainforest as far as the eye can see. The entire property glistens with newness—it’s been open only since 2012—with 611 stylish rooms, 64 suites and 3 Presidential Suites (all with those famous Heavenly Beds®) and just about every amenity you can think of, including exclusive White Tea aloe lotions and fluffy robes. The rooms are amazingly quiet, with only the sound of the waves to ensure a restful night’s sleep. Service professionals are at-the-ready to tend to every whim, but are never intrusive or bothersome. It’s the best kind of pampering—there for you, but only when you want it. The abundance of captivating flora at Westin Playa Bonita is mirrored by the resort’s endless outdoor activities. Swim in one of three infinity pools (there is also a children’s pool), try beach yoga, kayaking, jogging, or move inside to the WestinWORKOUT® 121

Fitness Studio. Relaxation also comes in many forms—a stroll on the private beach, a poolside nap or seek sanctuary in your own luxurious Heavenly Bath®. Or, take pampering to the max at the Sensory Spa by Clarins, combining the luxury line’s botanicals and expert rejuvenation techniques along with hydrothermics—from steam rooms and saunas, to ice plunges and RainShower refreshers. And, in keeping with the wellness theme, the resort is smokefree, with an abundance of delicious and healthy cuisine, fresh juices and several combinations of fruit-vegetable smoothies. Six restaurants are on property, from casual beachside and Pacific Rim to haute steakhouse—each distinctively influenced from points around the globe. International buffets are extensive at Oceanica and Café Pacifica (breakfast), while the Latin American steakhouse, Tierra y Fuego, is the ultimate splurge—and the best place to enjoy a perfectly shaken Martini, prime Angus beef, rack of lamb or the signature 12-ounce churrasco skirt steak. Not really feeling like gussying up? The surprising in-room dining menu takes its cues from the resort’s restaurants, with seriously delicious dishes along with premium wines and spirits that don’t usually show up on a room service tray, Four bars keep la dolce vita flowing with cocktails, many made with Ron Abuelo Panamanian rum, which traces its history back to the country’s first sugar mill in 1908, or Seco Herrerano, also made here from sugar cane but is not rum. Atlas, Panama, Soberana beers and Balboa, a lager, are also made locally and have earned worldclass reputations. As vacationers gain renewed enthusiasm for the unique and authentic, Panama is becoming … well … hip. The country’s beauty, its reserved warmth, and its endless intrigue are alive and well, as you’ll want to see for yourself. The Westin Playa Bonita’s onsite tour operator, Gamboa Tours, makes it immensely easy for guests to explore the world beyond the confines of resort walls. Here are a few suggested excursions to stoke your wanderlust:
Just 13 miles from Portobelo, ISLA GRANDE is a picturesque island that is accessible only by boat. The pristine tropical nature and crystal-clear waters attract surfers and beach loungers. Of course a trip to Panama must include a visit to the PANAMA CANAL . Miraflores Locks, minutes from the Westin Playa Bonita, is a marvel of human ingenuity and labor. Watching mammoth vessels as they pass through the locks with just inches to spare on each side is thrilling. The full history of the project is illustrated in three floors of museum exhibits and a 20-minute 3-D movie. There is an on-site restaurant along with a gourmet coffee shop for refreshment, and souvenirs galore. History buff or not, you will want to spend the better part of the day here. A surprise of a country? We’ll drink to that. westinplayabonita.com
THE CASCO VIEJO, now being restored, is the old colonial city.
Walking tours of its narrow streets bordered by delicate wrought iron balconies should include stops at the Baroque San Jose Church, Cathedral Square and the Mano de Tigre bastion, of which only a small part remains because of attacks by pirates and a devastating fires in 1671 and 1737. Today, Casco Viejo, reminiscent of old Havana, seems poised to become a kind of South Beach-style hotbed of cafes, hotels and nightclubs.
PARADISE UNEXPECTED Panama reveals itself in little strokes, with each discovery exposing the country’s raw heart and soul. Pristine shell beaches line the Pacific side, and powdery white sands line the Caribbean side. Ruins of forts, iglesias (churches), missions and other vestiges of a rich history are dotted throughout the country, and Portobelo, with five forts, is perhaps the most beguiling. Pirate attacks and fires partially destroyed the stuctures, and each reconstruction incorporated the latest materials available at the time: brain

TUCKED INTO THE LATTARI MOUNTAINS and rising high above the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea on the Amalfi Coast sits Positano, a quaint Italian town known for its entrancing beauty. Author John Steinbeck best captured the aura of Positano in an article he penned for Harper’s Bazaar in 1953, in which he describes it as “a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Indeed, the town’s sherbet-colored façades edging up the cliffs, cobalt blue waters and groves of sweet-smelling lemon and orange trees continue to win over the hearts of visitors who flock to this coastal destination from April to September. Many vacationers seeking the ultimate in luxury select the five-star Hotel Il San Pietro di Positano as home base. An architectural masterpiece, San Pietro is sculpted into the cliffs overlooking the bay of Positano. Designed to be in harmony with the surrounding natural beauty, each of the 62 rooms is situated on tiers of gardens and boasts a private terrace with striking sea views. Start the day with complimentary seaside yoga classes or a two-hour boat ride along the coastline. After lunch, take a dip in the hotel’s private cove, or—cocktail in hand—enjoy the soothing sounds of the sea lapping against the dramatic sunbathing platform. For professional pampering, pop into the hotel’s spa and fitness center. And don’t miss the cascading pathway of 400 steps that begins near the lobby and concludes at the foot of the cliff. It guides you through San Pietro’s organic gardens, which provide the herbs and vegetables that find their way onto every plate served in the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Zass. No matter what activities you decide on, one thing is certain—breathtaking vistas at every turn. And with San Pietro’s unique location at the cliff summit, there’s hardly a more magical vantage point of Positano and nearby islands Capri and Li Galli. As San Pietro is located just on the outskirts of Positano, a complimentary luxury car shuttle is always on hand to whisk you away to the city center. Here you’ll find narrow pedestrian-only alleys lined with charming family-owned boutiques and restaurants. At the town’s main beach and epicenter of activity, Spiaggia Grande, it’s not unusual for tourists and friendly locals to share laughs and limoncello amid the remarkable seascape. And so just as it has for centuries, Positano continues to lure visitors, drawn here by the region’s spectacular scenery and its special brand of la dolce vita. ilsanpietro.it

THE BRIGHT LIGHTS of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Town Square illuminate the boardwalk while tourists clamor for photographs in front of the famed antler arches. Successive rankings as one of America’s top ski resorts have also had the effect of added congestion in the Village. Just 30 minutes south of the tourist madness, however, is a pristine destination that harks back to the land that originally enraptured 19th-century homesteaders. Accessible via the iconic red bridge, the Snake River Sporting Club encompasses 1,000 magnificent acres fronting 6 miles of the Snake River and abutting the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Eagles and ospreys soar across the sky while horses roam in fields. As spectacular as the scenery is, the club offers equally impressive amenities. “This is a very intimate experience for highly discerning members,” says COO Jeff Heilbrun. Golf Digest rates the championship golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf as the “No. 1 Golf Course in Wyoming,” and the challenging course undulates across the valley floor as it mimics the ever-shifting Snake River. “The course is demanding for anyone, but a variety of tee options ensure it can be played by everyone,” says head golf pro Kali Quick. The Orvis Fly Fishing School at the Snake River Sporting Club is the esteemed outfitter’s first association in Wyoming. Premier access to the renowned river and on-stream instruction guarantee success. Other activities—such as river rafting, horseback riding and skeet shooting—can be scheduled from the sumptuous, log-constructed Clubhouse that overlooks the property. From fine dining in front of a roaring fire to barbecue on the deck, the club accommodates every palate. With only 68 home sites available, the property presents a rare opportunity to experience such understated luxury. Elegantly rustic homes are discreetly sited so that each boasts both secluded privacy and views of the magnificent natural world. With a plethora of amenities outside the front door and easy access to national parks and ski slopes, the Snake River Sporting Club is an authentic Wyoming sportsman’s paradise. And, while some seek proximity to town or the slopes, a visit to Snake River Sporting Club might just confirm that you’d prefer to fall asleep to the rumble of the Snake River and wake to the song of the goldfinch. This is one property that blends seamlessly into its palatial surroundings for an authentic Jackson Hole experience. srsportingclub.com
The clubhouse exudes a modern mountain aesthetic, interspersing contemporary Western art throughout the historically referenced log construction. BRIMMING WITH offbeat appeal, Key West is known as much for its quirky, welcoming community as it is for its tropical sun-bleached sands and translucent blue waters. Freshly renovated to boast contemporary amenities including a pool bar, cigar lounge and on-site food truck, The Gates Hotel, sited at the island’s entry point, is an exciting option for visitors in search of fresh accommodations that don’t sacrifice this casual mindset. Key West spans a mere 4 square miles, so it’s easy to transition from one sight to another, and the most convenient—and fun—way to explore is by bike. Pick up a blue Martone Cycling Company two-wheeler from The Gates and whizz from coast to cabana (cycling programs and sunset rides are also available). Smathers and Higgs beaches, both just down the road, offer public ocean access, while Fort Zachary Taylor, a state park and national historic landmark, provides more seclusion for a small fee, boasting picnic tables, swimming coves and walking paths. For a closer look at nature, stroll the 11-acre Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden across the street from the hotel. Once you’ve had your fill of sand and sun, it’s a quick jaunt to the shops, sights and restaurants in New Town as well as in historic Old Town, location of The Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, where you’ll find relics from the beloved author’s illustrious career. For a history lesson on Prohibition—and the local libations—tour the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery (specialty cocktails made with its original white rum are also available at The Gates’ poolside bar, Rum Row). For a creative outlet, enjoy cooking lessons from a rotating lineup of the island’s best chefs at local kitchenware purveyor Isle Cook and enjoy sunset and a show at the famed Mallory Square down the road. And don’t forget to snap an obligatory photo next to the famous “Southernmost Point” buoy. There’s also no shortage of after-dark activities; Duval Street, spanning more than a mile from shore to shore, houses countless shops, restaurants and bars (Green Parrot is a local favorite) that rarely see a slow night. “Slow,” however, might be just the word to describe life on Key West—which, as the locals will agree, seems to run on it’s own timetable. In fact, many residents are vacationers who decided to make their stay permanent—and it’s not difficult to see why. gateshotelkeywest.com
Newly renovated with modern amenities such as a pool bar, cigar lounge (with locally crafted Rodriguez Cigar Factory cigars) and The Blind Pig food truck, The Gates Hotel blends laid-back style with modernminimalist accommodations for an experience that’s as casual as it is refined. opposite Key West’s sunsets are celebrated nightly at Mallory Square. The island’s architecture serves as tangible evidence of the area’s rich history. Street stalls with brightly colored ornaments pepper the streets.
TO THE STREETS >> Though it feels far-removed from the mainland, Key West embraces the burgeoning trend of mobile dining, most recently with the opening of The Blind Pig food truck. Operating from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at The Gates Hotel, Blind Pig serves a selection of tacos, sandwiches and snacks. For a taste of traditional Cuban fare, sample the Cafe Con Leche (Cuban coffee with steamed milk, also available over ice) or a savory breakfast sandwich from counter-service eatery Cuban Coffee Queen, which has both a waterfront and downtown locations. gateshotelkeywest.

FEELING CHINTZY
NEVER ONE TO GET LOST IN EPHEMERAL TRENDS, MARCIA PAYS HOMAGE TO A TIMELESS SOUTHERN STAPLE AND ITS LONGSTANDING APPEAL.
HAVING HAD THE HONOR of meeting the “Prince of Chintz,” Mario Buatta, I feel that I have a unique perspective on the role of chintz in our Southern heritage. Now, Mr. Buatta is not a man to be trifled with. He has been buying copious amounts of chintz since around the time The Varsity was built, and we’re talking several metric tons of the glazed cotton. Chintz, which originated in India as 136
painted muslin, was a rare and expensive fabric when it was imported to Europe in the 1600s. The wealthy clamored for it. Derived from the Hindi word “chint,” which means broad, gaudily printed fabric, chintz has always been a bold choice. And, as doled out by Buatta and his followers on bedding, window treatments, wallpaper and upholstery, chintz was the rage from the 1980s to the turn
of the 21st century, when many designers dropped it for simple, geometric patterns or solids. They abhorred the excess of chintz in their minimalist designs. In Atlanta, we knew better. We kept our chintz like we kept our Meemaw’s silver (we don’t exactly “cotton to” trends). Sure, we got swept up in the frenzy of mirrored furniture, and there was that touch of madness with turquoise. But we are
a patient bunch, hunkering down with our chiffon robes and linen presses. Even if we tented our rooms in chintz, we didn’t dare remove it. But, wiser heads have prevailed. Mary McDonald has designed a new collection chintz, and she is rocking it oldschool with fresh takes on traditional floral motifs. It goes to show you that good things, like chintz, never go out of style. Thank heavens.
