spectacular style I’M OFTEN ASKED WHY Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles takes on so many showhouses. How many do we support and/or produce each year? Four … and counting. Are we gluttons for punishment? No comment. But when a classically minded team that included architect Yong Pak, builder Michael Ladisic, landscape architect Richard Anderson and interior designer Lauren DeLoach approached us about an incredible home—on an incredibly private lot, and with incredible plans to both sensitively renovate and add on—how could we pass? Add to the mix the Southeast’s celebrated decorating doyenne, Jackye Lanham, as Honorary Chair; kitchen, bath and closet design by Matthew Quinn; and twenty of the region’s finest interior designers, and the rest was, well, gravy. Tradition—and traditional design—often gets a bum rap, as if it’s not inventive, interesting or innovative enough. If there’s one thing the 2017 Southeastern Designer Showhouse proved, it’s that traditional design is far from flat—it is grand, it is gorgeous, it is pretty and it is powerful. The classics are very much inspiring, carry influence and convey a perspective. Want proof? Look at our cover, for one. Then, flip to page 90 for the complete highlights. Thanks to all of our readers who visited the Showhouse this past spring, and a hearty hug goes out to our participating designers, sponsors and staff who displayed the same sense of

Flower Power Equally celebrated as a professional illustrator and artist as she is for her entertaining prowess, Cathy Graham’s fêtes are whimsical, almost electric, in her guests’ memories. In Second Bloom (Vendome Press, $35), Graham pays tribute to the importance of both flowers and paperie, from one-of-a-kind invitations and place cards she designs herself to tables artfully arranged with bud vases, botanical ephemera and collectible curiosities. The flowers, gathered from her garden, are always the guests of honor.

Inner Circle Lush, intimate and unbridled, The Authentics (Clarkson Potter, $60) reveals an unfiltered glimpse into the lifestyles of tastemakers such as Miles Redd, Hutton Wilkinson and Kelly Wearstler through the cinematic captures of photographer Melanie Acevedo. Granting entree into their most private environments, the next-level lifestyle tome reveals sensuality, even a touch of wackiness, through intimate question-and-answer interviews with cohort and creative Dara Caponigro.
With Canines in Mind They’re loyal and loving, so why shouldn’t our beloved pets have the run of the house? So argues seasoned writer Susanna Salk in At Home with Dogs and Their Designers (Rizzoli, $35), as she tours the private domains of 22 top-shelf tastemakers—Mary McDonald, Carolyne Roehm, Charlotte Moss, Jonathan Adler and more—with their pups as our guides. ike Matthew Quinn’s striking treatment of this stove’s vent hood and backsplash, we love the weighty feeling that burnished brass and bronze are lending to the latest lighting, hardware and furnishings. These heavy metals eschew polish and lacquer in favor of a brushed, fingerprint-resistant finish that doesn’t tarnish as much over time. Put simply: It’s the best of both worlds.

Since the hood was so much larger in scale, our Colorado metal shop used a huge peening hammer to achieve this wonderful texture on unlacquered brass—which doesn’t show fingerprints and patinas both quickly and beautifully.” —Matthew Quinn

SCROLL UP “What we call the ‘Greek wave’ is also known as a Vitruvian scroll—one of my favorite running ornaments or spirals. Historically, it originated in pottery motifs in seaside settlements and later in the mosaic floors of Roman and Pompeian bathhouses. More recently, this classical form was favored by 18th-, 19th- and 20thcentury architects— such as Atlanta’s own Philip T. Shutze, in the Piedmont Driving Club living room, and James Means, in the Haverty-Davis house. Here, a three-story stairwell provided a wonderful opportunity to highlight this motif—made even more appropriate because it leads the eye to views of the infinity pool beyond.” —Jackye Lanham

aking inspiration from the Showhouse’s original brick floors and timeless terra-cotta, some of our favorite color tones of the moment pull from the rusty end of the spectrum. Back in a new way following their ’90s heyday, these shades are showing up in upholstery, leather and, of course, tried-and-true tile. This time around, however, they have stellar style.

The Builder Despite the six-month moratorium on demolitions in Tuxedo Park and higher labor costs, custom homebuilder Stan Benecki remains optimistic about the market. By summer 2017, two of his homes sold for $4 million before he even put them on the market. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE MORATORIUM? I’m against it. It was approved through the city council without bringing it to the neighborhood planning unit for Tuxedo Park for public discussion. Tuxedo Park is only 10 streets; we currently have strict building and zoning codes that these houses have to meet. WHAT DIFFICULTIES ARE YOU SEEING IN LABOR? There are fewer laborers in the marketplace. The downturn in 2008 pushed trades into other indusTUXEDO PARK

Our clients gravitate to us because our houses have one-of-a-kind elements like Venetian plaster walls, Italian mosaic bathroom floors, wide-plank French oak hardwoods, thick custom interior doors and jewel-like cabinet hardware.

The Urban Planner The popularity of urban districts in the suburbs is
by the NUMBERS
driving more communities to create walkable mixeduse destinations. Robert Begle is principal for urban design and planning at Lord Aeck Sargent, a fullservice architecture and design firm. IS THE BELTLINE’S POPULARITY INFLUENCING DESIGN, ESPECIALLY IN THE SUBURBS? Just about anywhere we go to do planning, everybody’s talking about the BeltLine: “How do we do our own version of that?” It’s that whole social lifestyle. It’s become the place to see and be seen and people-watch. It’s sort of an eye opener [about the power of] trail-centered development. You see people trying to replicate that. That leads to these mixed-use kinds of places.

Naomi Von Habersham WHILE OTHERS WERE AWAY LOLLING ON BEACHES this summer, I was purging my home of decades’ worth of stuff. What started out as a weekend organization project turned into a three-month Herculean effort of culling, boxing and donating. Who knew one could accumulate so many possessions in a matter of 40 years? It all started when I decided to get my closet under control. Was it really necessary to save that Victor Costa dress that I hadn’t worn since 1990? Well, no, and the same goes for my Maud Frizon and Charles Jourdan shoes. Who wears those funny little heels anymore? Off those went to Goodwill, along with an Andrew Marc leather jacket and a Donna Karan bodysuit. I did, however, keep that little Claude Montana number that made the ’80s oh so fun. The closet exercise in turn led to an edit of my storage space. I had forgotten all about the rolls of Louis Bowen wallpaper and that bolt of Zumsteg glazed cotton. Those are so good, I decided to hang on to them, along with a LaceyChampion rug I had forgotten all about. Oh, yes, and there was a Mario Buatta for John Widdicomb tray table. I wasn’t about to part with it. But the floral lampshades and the frilly glass cake plate embellished with ribbon simply had to go. Why on earth had I ever bought them in the first place? Then it was off to my bookshelves. My word, so many books! As much as I cherish my book collection, there were titles that had no place on my shelves. Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus? Really? Did I need those Jackie Collins paperbacks? No. The ones by Judith Krantz? Yes. And on it went, until I had 10 boxes of books destined for this fall’s book fair, benefiting the American Association of University Women. And so now, I can finally breathe, as can my home. Editing is a wonderful thing. But in the future, I’m going to adhere to the following rule: One in, one out—no ifs, ands or buts about it. 53

ABOUT SERENBE
“A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes well-being as natural as nature itself.” Serenbe is pioneering a new community model connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes wellbeing as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests and meadows with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets

a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past. Each of the neighborhoods have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing and education for awareness. Year-round cultural events include outdoor theater from Serenbe Playhouse, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, fi lms and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a spa and trail
riding, plus a robust artist residency program featuring open studios, performances and talks. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday farmer’s market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fi g trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend or stay for a lifetime.

A LETTER FROM
SERENBE’S FOUNDERS
SERENBE
MASTER PLAN
If you want to change the world, start in your own backyard. We discovered the property now known as Serenbe on a weekend outing to introduce our children to the Georgia countryside in 1991. Over the course of the next three years, we found that our time on the weekends and time together as family brought us peace and serenity. So, in 1994 we moved to the farm full time and stepped off the insatiable treadmill of life. In 2000, we recognized the need to protect the woods and land that had become our home. That journey has led us to become placemakers, where we are rediscovering what it means to build community and create place, to think about life as a piece of art where we can bring beauty to the small moments in life. It has always been extremely important to our family to celebrate the arts. From the whimsical lampposts in the Selborne neighborhood to the site-speciďŹ c theater of Serenbe Playhouse, our goal is to integrate the arts into every aspect of life. We are excited to invite you to visit the 2017 Serenbe Designer Showhouse, and stay for a meal, a weekend or call Serenbe home for a lifetime. Aerial view

ART OVER DINNER Art Over Dinner is a series of intimate gatherings with artists and the organizations that support their work. We collaborate with chefs and farmers to create a seasonal meal that showcases winemakers and brewers, and invite our guest artists to spark the conversation at one long farm table on the outdoor deck of the Art Farm at Serenbe. WORKSHOPS & DEMOS Throughout the year we hold several workshops and demos put on by a mixture of local and visiting artists, creatives and culture-makers. Although they have projects of all types and scales, from Florida to Arkansas, they are particularly excited to be designing their second Serenbe Designer Showhouse.

A classically designed historic home in Buckhead was totally transformed for 21st-century living thanks to a thoughtful and
remarkable renovation by architect Yong Pak and builder Michael Ladisic. Like the high-contrast palette of this dynamic, Jackye Lanham-designed entry foyer, the 2017
SOUTHEASTERN DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE was a spectacular display of forward-thinking, traditional-minded design. The ebonized 19th-century Regency-style chairs, 1930’s Chinese green hardstone lamps and Chinese bronze urn are from Parc Monceau. The silk DeGournay drapery panel fabric is available through Ainsworth-Noah.

ERHAPS no other showhouse in Atlanta’s history has felt quite this REGAL. Built for the HAVERTY family in the 1960’s, this was a house that was OLD TO BEGIN WITH, thanks to celebrated architect JAMES MEANS’ decision to employ RECLAIMED materials, from the COBBLESTONES in the driveway and brick on the house’s front facade to the first floor’s HEART PINE floors and intricate paneling. Architect YONG PAK, builder MICHAEL LADISIC, intrepid homeowners and ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES could not have been more pleased with the sensitive overhaul of this historic ESTATE, now the Haverty-Davis house. 92

In the family room, decorator PHOEBE HOWARD took her cues from the verdant green of the exterior views and the cool blues of the kitchen/breakfast room, allowing both natural palettes to inform her lush approach to this gathering space. Since blue happens to be Howard’s favorite hue, the rest of the room’s scheme fell into place quite easily. Describing it as “airy” and “garden-like,” Howard outfitted the family-friendly room with soft textiles to make its lofty dimensions feel more cozy and contained. A durable sea grass rug layered under a traditional hand-knotted one mix with Howard’s eponymous upholstery range for Sherrill and more-casual antiques (including a few culled from the English countryside) to underscore the room’s intimate sentiment. Coordination—a Howard signature—was key, so even the framed dried hydrangeas were dyed to match the sumptuous Cowtan & Tout textiles. –Kate Abney this page and previous spread

Blue CRUSH TRISTAN HARSTAN drew influence from writer and fashion designer Pauline de Rothschild when designing the tranquil master bedroom and sitting room. “[Her] desire to create a ‘refuge of beauty’ to escape the demands of daily life, and her love for chinoiserie, is akin to my own design sensibility,” Harstan says. These spaces are indeed a refuge of beauty thanks to a calming color palette of blues Harstan layered throughout—pale blue grasscloth from AinsworthNoah on the walls, a blue-painted ceiling in the sitting room (painted SherwinWilliams Rainwashed) and Carleton V Ltd.’s Venetian Damask drapery fabric, a personal favorite of Harstan’s. The room unites the tones of rain clouds, water, stone, with “my love of Swedish and French furniture, chinoiserie, exotic birds and collected treasures that appeal to the eye,” says Harstan. –Claire Ruhlin 95

In the master bathroom, Matthew Quinn of DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN AND BATH STUDIO Studio stayed true to the architecture, making subtle yet substantial design choices in the dreamy suite. “YONG PAK designed the amazing barrel-vault ceiling,” says Quinn. “Since there was so much great trim work on the ceiling, we brought the details down on the walls and cabinets so it feels like one space.” The simple yet stunning retreat’s focal point is the breathtaking pewter bathtub from Renaissance Tile & Bath that holds court in the serene space. Neutral tones and materials, like Farrow & Ball All White wall and cabinet paint and Calacatta marble, highlight the decorative window dressings, furnishings and lighting by ANNA BRAUND. “Yong Pak and Michael Quinn’s architectural and cabinetry design was unparalleled,” says Braund, “so I desired for the interior design finishes to quietly complement rather than take one’s eye away from their beautiful design.” – Jeanne Lyons Davis

■ HER CLOSET When Quinn discovered the homeowner’s flair for fashion, he designed a showroom-like space to store and display her wardrobe and accessories. To match her unique organization process, Quinn added a combination of closets, open shelving and hanging
man’s walk-in closet. Brass details were incorporated into the shoe shelves, and detailed hooks and brass hanging rods from Matthew Quinn Collection at ADAC West fill the handsome space. “You start the day in your closet and end the day in your closet,” he says. “It’s the little things that make it feel special.”
racks, as well as a glass-lit Lucite purse shelf. “Design details, like Lucite pulls, light and bright walls, and the chandelier, prevent the clothes from dominating the space,” says Quinn.
RAISING the Bar Though small, this wet bar is fierce as it slings back major style in a narrow galley. “We went to the ceiling with the aged glass tiles from Renaissance to nod to the history of the home,” says MATTHEW QUINN of Design Galleria of the old-world details. “We didn’t incorporate any high wall cabinets in order to keep the space feeling as open as possible.” Another design trick for the narrow room was his tactful use of color. Going against conventional wisdom that says lighter walls make spaces look larger, Quinn went with a darker hue, Farrow & Ball Down Pipe. “The darker color, with the reflective mirrors and François & Co. De Corbusier pewter countertop, actually opens up the space,” he says. – Jeanne Lyons Davis 97

■ ENTRY FOYER Designed on an axis that leads the eye from the entrance to views of the rear courtyard’s infinityedge pool and beyond, this three-story stairwell was transformed from a dark wood stain to a highcontrast palette thanks to a scroll on the stair skirt board Lanham painted black-and-white and a dynamic floor pattern from Renaissance Tile & Bath.
COOL & Collected When crafting the first impression of this historic home, its entry foyer, JACKYE LANHAM found both inspirations and challenges, thanks to the classical motif of the Pompeian wave on the stair skirt board and the black-and-white zigzag pattern of the freshly laid tile floors. After selecting DeGournay’s handpainted silk panels in Plum Blossom for a pair of neighboring doors, “we immediately thought of the ancient ‘Silk Road,’” says Lanham of the ancient trade routes which opened the cultures of the East to the West and brought silk to Rome. With that link between Italy and China established, Lanham and JENNIFER FERGUSON assembled pieces that are not only grounded in history but also paint a portrait of objects collected through the ages, from the Chinese fretwork on the stair runner and Pagoda lanterns to an Italian commode and English chinoiserie case clock. Master CHEF When designing the state-of-the-art kitchen, renowned kitchen and bath designer Matthew Quinn of DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN AND BATH STUDIO had no reservations about crafting a regal space with modern amenities. “We gave the homeowners the function of a large kitchen by incorporating smart design and storage selections while still paying homage to the architecture and legacy of the home,” Quinn says. He incorporated ample storage with floor-to-ceiling Dutch inset cabinetry painted Light Blue by Farrow & Ball. The hammered brass hood and hardware, both custom creations by Design Galleria, as well as the Calacatta Gold Extra marble island by Levantina, infuse inviting warmth and storied heritage to the 21st-century space. “Everyone responds to blue with marble and brass,” says Quinn. “It’s comfortable, and you can imagine yourself in the space. ■ BREAKFAST NOOK Renovating a historic house comes with unique challenges, but architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates and builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes incorporated interesting elements, such

as this rounded window that offers a glimpse into the adjacent veranda. Lauren DeLoach upholstered the window surround and added nailhead trim for unexpected elegance.
LAUREN DELOACH was inspired first and foremost by the history of the house—and then the preferences of its inhabitants. “Blue is [the lady of the house’s] favorite color,” explains the designer, who employed a classic approach for the breakfast area and its adjacent cooking and prepping spaces, for which she collaborated with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio. Drawing upon the soft Farrow & Ball blue selected for the kitchen cabinets, DeLoach painted the breakfast nook’s shiplap walls a muted shade to match, then adorned its built-ins with an array of her favorite collectibles: antique creamware (in this case, from the estate of legendary local designer Dan Carithers) for a pop of contrast. Daily meals are a delight at the elegant heirloom dining table, which is paired with a custom banquette outfitted in a Cowtan & Tout buffalo check and recycled ivory leather (which, belying its beauty, is a cinch to wipe clean). –Kate Abney RUG Moattar CREAMWARE Interiors Market MONOGRAMMED LINENS Custom through Gramercy Home GOBLETS AND BUD VASES Erika Reade Ltd. Refined COMFORT Birmingham-based designer TAMMY CONNOR had an English country house in mind when she took on the challenge of revamping the home’s original dining room. “Traditionally, these grand rooms were elaborately adorned with fine antiques, decorative walls and Chippendale furnishings,” Connor explains. “I wanted to create a modern-day interpretation.” Calling upon Atlanta artist Raymond Goins, she had a Holland & Sherry grass cloth hand-painted in an extended chinoiserie motif, gracing the dining room with an earthy palette she describes as apricot and burnt umber. Paired with creamy white millwork, it lends a crispness that feels fresh, not formal. Luscious textures, like that of the antique rug and glazed-linen chair fabric, bring a “comfortable but refined” sensibility to the mahogany dining set, which is met by painted host and hostess chairs that give an old-guard seating arrangement a transitional twist. –Kate Abney
■ DINING ROOM While few families “live” in the front of the house anymore, says architect Yong Pak, keeping the home’s historic core intact was a priority. Elements such as the heart pine floors were reclaimed from an Athens, Georgia, home when they were originally installed for the Haverty’s. The raised paneling on the mantel, over-mantel and the door surrounds retain the integrity of the original home.

door offers a casual entrance from the driveway— via a small sitting porch— into one of the renovated home’s two mudrooms.
Outfitting a trio of the home’s ancillary spaces was far more than a utilitarian concern for DANA WOLTER , who was tasked with designing the mudroom, powder room and butler’s pantry. “We wanted [them] to reflect the family as much as possible,” says the designer, whose approach to the mudroom renders the home’s most frequent entry point wholly grown-up and chic. Shiplap walls, natural-fiber flooring and an understated color palette coordinate beautifully with the butler’s panty, which Wolter also designed. The former even features an inviting built-in bench and console stacked with sophisticated objets d’art, making this would-be casual landing place feel extraordinarily more foyer-like. But despite its superior style, the mudroom proffers the utmost functionality for the family’s comings and goings, with storage for keys, bags, rain boots, mail and more. –Kate Abney 106
Originally part of the home’s kitchen, this space speaks to the modern family’s desire to live more casually. The mudroom, which also contains a powder room, opens to the formal dining room as well as to the butler’s pantry, kitchen and breakfast nook.

■ VERANDA The rear facade of the original house was not aesthetically in tune with its gracious brick front, so architect Yong Pak carved out space from the former children’s playroom to create an open-air porch overlooking a new infinityedge pool, and beyond, Nancy Creek. Pak also created a narrow “gallery” hall to promote flow from the home’s historic core to its new, U-shaped additions adding casual living space.
Balanced BEAUTY Ann Huff and Meg Harrington of HUFF HARRINGTON HOME channeled their penchant for all things French into the veranda and vestibule gallery. In true Francophile form, the duo paired the old, such as a vintage French iron coffee table and an old workbench that doubles as a console, with the new—a clean-lined black iron sofa and high-gloss Chippendale-style armchairs. Since the two also own an art gallery, Huff Harrington Fine Art, they naturally sprinkled in plenty of artwork throughout, particularly on the veranda, where lively florals and accents pack a punch and serve as conversation pieces. “We wanted an outdoor room that was ultimately comfortable and livable but pretty and interesting too,” says Harrington. “It’s just as comfortable for reading the paper as it is for hosting an intimate and chic little dinner party.” –Claire Ruhlin LANTERN Bevelo IRON COFFEE TABLE, FAUX BOIS PLANTER, FAUX BOIS CHAIR & WORKTABLE/CONSOLE, COPPER BOWL Vintage ALL OTHER ITEMS AND ACCESSORIES Huff Harrington Home

Al fresco AMBIENCE Truly transitional spaces between indoors and out, the timeless veranda and vestibule by Will Huff and Heather Dewberry of HUFF DEWBERRY pushed the limits of outdoor living. “We tapped Mother Nature as our muse,” explains Dewberry, detailing their color palette of mossy green and sky blue. The scheme is seen in everything from the commissioned abstract on birch panel to the sumptuous fabrics—amazingly all weather-ready. The bar for what constitutes an exterior textile continues to be raised, and the designers took full advantage by upholstering a sofa and club chairs from their namesake outdoor line with channels of drainable foam and velvety fabrics from Thibaut’s fresh outdoor collection. Even a marine varnish—typically used for boats— was applied to carved French chairs, giving them diamond-like defense against the elements. The results are furnishings that stand up to bright sun, Southern breezes, rainy-day mists, and even wafts of smoke from the nearby fireplace. –Kate Abney

SUAVE Study CHAD JAMES describes his library as “a room for nostalgic reflection.” Dark and debonair though it may be, James says the room intentionally tempers masculine with feminine, bringing in bright, balancing components for visual reprieve. A stalwart center table stacked with books is countered by a reading nook—completed by a handsome desk—that speaks to this symphony of contrasts, with black shelves lined with white-wrapped tomes punctuated by artful accents. At the table, cocooning curtains track along the ceiling—framing an oversize, Paris-procured photograph suspended by a pair of fine chain links—and a playful floral ceiling fixture serves as a foil for the studious nature of the space. –Kate Abney CHANDELIER Paul Ferrante through Ainsworth-Noah DRAPERY FABRIC Zak + Fox FOFA O. ■ MASTER PASSAGE Gothic arches are a subtle but sophisticated addition to the newly renovated residence, paying homage
A floral fabric (Tree of Life by Michael S. Smith for Jasper) takes center stage in the master passage, where designer ANNA BRAUND, inspired by spring’s blooms, decided to upholster the walls with the eye-catching print. “With the story line of this year’s showhouse focusing on the spring season and an affinity for nature, I looked to nature itself to create something that felt consistent with that theme,” says Braund. A built-in bookshelf housing an assortment of volumes from E. Lawrence adds a dose of whimsy, as do a carved oak bench and Oushak rug, while a banquette upholstered in Clay McLaurin’s Twine fabric offers a comfortable reading nook. “The room’s name, master passage, implies the use being utilitarian,” says Braund. “However, I saw an opportunity to turn a pass-through into a haven.” –Claire Ruhlin 112

Jewel box BEAUTY Functional femininity elevates the polished office designed for the lady of the house in conjunction with Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio. “When the homeowner walks into her office, we wanted her to feel good entering her own little jewel box with a mix of accessories and a blush-pink ceiling,” MARGARET KIRKLAND says. The chic Bella Books wallpaper by Kate Spade for Kravet inspired this modern mom’s nook. “This wallpaper pattern is bold and sophisticated, artistically executed, and fun and whimsical,” Kirkland says. The faux objets d’art and the real decorative boxes, figures and vases, along with an antique clock from Parc Monceau, a vintage Oushak rug, and black-and-white abstracts and silhouettes, lend the new space a sense of history. “With the divine feeling of being surrounded by books and modern art, I wanted it to be a perfect workspace where creative ideas are born,” Kirkland says. —Shannon Dominy
■ HER OFFICE “With so much cabinet storage—and a dedicated surface for organization—life also feels civilized and orderly,” says Kirkland of this chic office space. Farrow & Ball’s Castle Gray anchors the space and sets the tone for a remarkably refined palette that still leaves room for a dose of whimsy in the form of the Kate Spade for

Rustic RETREAT When designing the man cave, located in the basement, it only made sense for designer WILLIAM PEACE of Peace Design to cultivate an aesthetic that felt collected, rustic and, of course, masculine. With a globetrotting occupant in mind, Peace filled the spacious room with antiques, exotic treasures, tribal antiques and animal mounts, which pop against textured barn-board walls. “With our work in the West, we are used to reclaimed materials and were thrilled to see the barn board be utilized in the space,” says Peace. “It added a great deal of warmth. The pair of large windows were a brilliant solution to a lower-level space.” Root-wood chairs and a cocktail table from Jim Thompson tie in with this organic element and serve as the perfect place to kick back with a cocktail in hand. –Claire Ruhlin 117

■ LIVING ROOM James Means, this house’s original architect, incorporated many reclaimed materials into this project, including the intricate reclaimed heart pine paneling featured in this formal living room. Coupled with the front facade’s deep window insets, the effect is classic sophistication.
SERIOUS Style When designing the living room, designer STAN TOPOL envisioned an open space where homeowners and guests could come together in conversation. “I don’t like to overcrowd a room,” says Topol. Groupings of seating—a sectional sofa and two armchairs near the fireplace and a pair of comfortable swivel chairs close to the wall—invite guests to sit and converse for a while. Antique touches such as a European brass chandelier and a French chest add a sense of warmth to the room, as do the walls, which boast a custom stain. “We wanted to treat the room with the respect a marvelously paneled living room would need for a house of this level and style,” says Topol. –Claire Ruhlin

Inspired by English and old-world European styles, SARAH BARTHOLOMEW used a hand-printed fabric from Bennison Fabrics (American Resist in New Blues on Oyster) as the basis for this mother’s suite. In addition to upholstering the walls with the elegant fabric, Bartholomew employed the print for the window treatments, headboard and bed coverlet, enveloping the space in classic blue and white. This perfect color pairing is punctuated by red trim as well as antique pieces, including a series of William Hogarth engravings and an antique dhurrie rug from Guinevere Antiques in London. “As the bedroom is inspired by traditional British style, it includes an array of time-honored pieces from England,” notes Bartholomew. A nod to her Southern roots, the Nashville-based designer also incorporated abstract art pieces by regional artists such as Catherine Booker Jones and Kayce Hughes. –Claire Ruhlin

SULTRY Style Plush velvet and mod seating create a cool juxtaposition in this upstairs bedroom, which the team at B.D. JEFFRIES transformed into a sexy, secluded retreat. Here, a button-tufted sofa does double duty, providing a place to curl up on leisurely afternoons or easy last-minute accommodations for overnight company. Also taking on two purposes is an array of papier-mâché vessels perched upon tiny wall brackets; they create a crisp contrast against the walls while adding alluring texture. “Pairing deep, dark shades of gray with brushed brass elements helps to draw the eye to neutrals that normally would not stand out,” says designer Kati Hardwick. With its bold gestures and irregular drips, a contemporary triptych ups the ambience in an already atmospheric environment. Completing the scheme is an unusual articulated ceiling fixture, almost reminiscent of a chemical compound, which contributes curiosity to this moody den. –Kate Abney 123

Serene RETREAT Rosemary Beach, Florida-based designer PAIGE SUMBLIN SCHNELL of Tracery Interiors infused this calming guest suite with her signature breezy style, cultivating a serene, third-floor retreat. “It is an escape from the main portion of the house and feels as if you have left home to arrive at a fabulous hotel on the water,” says the designer. To achieve this, she kept the color palette light, allowing white shiplap walls and neutral furnishings to create a soothing backdrop for guests. The king bed was custom-designed by the Tracery team to fit snugly against the attic room’s low-slung ceilings, while two additional bunks were inset into the walls on either side to accommodate families with young children. Naturally CHIC When designing the upstairs lounge, LISA PALMER of SummerHouse looked to Fortuny’s Camo Isole fabric in Army (seen here covering a pillow) as her muse. “It is an unusual pattern for Fortuny—sort of glam meets Mississippi huntsman,” says Palmer of the hunter green, ivory and black design. “When I think of spring, I think of these colors,” she says, admitting it’s an unconventional springtime palette. To complement the room’s abundance of natural light, the designer kept the walls and trim light, adding contrast by using black as an anchoring neutral and sprinkling in touches of green in the form of items such as live plants and a custom lounge chair with green fabric from Donghia. “I wanted the room to be both beautiful and useful, displaying favorite pieces of art while serving as a place to converse between family and friends,” Palmer says. –Claire Ruhlin

Geometric GRACE “Our room was created with subtle hints of all the activities a young man and his dog would enjoy in springtime,” says SUSAN JAMIESON of Bridget Beari Designs, who outfitted this upstairs bedroom with handcrafted pieces, antiques and plenty of pattern. “We loved experimenting with the geometrics and mixing of the patterns, as seen in the headboard and the drapery panels we designed.” The headboard was created using custom Bridget Beari paints, and these hues were sprinkled throughout the space in accents such as a gold leather chair and a pillow showcasing a print by Pierre Frey. Timeless TRANSITION MARK SIMMONS embraced the incredible views of the backyard, pool and green space when he envisioned a tranquil guest bedroom. “We designed the room to be a comfortable space for houseguests to enjoy, while still keeping the personal flair of a young woman who no longer lives at home but visits often,” says the Nashville-based designer. Simmons used a palette of soft blues and greens with cream to retain a light and airy nature, while items such as a pendant with layers of metal leaves and an owl sculpture by North Carolina artist Christine Kosiba provide connections to the outdoors. The design progressed from traditional elements, such as the four-poster bed and Hollywood Regency-style bedside chair, to contemporary notions, such as Maggie Siner’s oil on linen of an unmade bed, that “keep the space from getting too serious,” Simmons says. —Lori Johnston BED White Fine Furnishings PENDANT LIGHT Circa Lighting LAMPS Edgar-Reeves DRAPERIES AND FABRIC Cowtan & Tout RODS Herndon & Merry PAINTING Maggie Siner through Leiper’s Creek Gallery OWL SCULPTURE Christine Kosiba through The Copper Fox Gallery WALNUT DESK, HUMIDOR and PLATES Parc Monceau DESK CHAIR Vintage, upholstery by MSI BEDDING Matouk and Cowtan & Tout SCONCES Circa Lighting ANTIQUE MIRROR Nicholson Gallery

ARTFUL Hideaway Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon of GORDONDUNNING turned to a favorite wallcovering in new colors—Schumacher’s Lotus Garden pattern in lavender, blue and pink—to set the whimsical tone of the art study. “We loved that this room was a discovered space, a secret garden of sorts,” Dunning says. “The dynamic walls and ceilings were so inspiring.” The twisting room with slanting ceilings gave the impression of an attic hideaway, and the duo drew inspiration from its original use as a child’s special play area. Dunning and Gordon layered landscapes and abstract art as floral imagery to create a vibrant yet feminine space. Custom scalloped banquettes in coral velvet, combined with antiques, art materials and books, fashion an elegant study for small gatherings, reading or painting for all ages. “What better place than a lilac lotus garden to inspire creativity?” Gordon says. —Shannon Dominy WALLCOVERING Schumacher Lotus Garden BANQUETTES Custom by GordonDunning FABRIC Schumacher TABLES Holland & Co. A powder room’s sense of place is dictated by the spaces around it. “A powder room doesn’t need to demand attention, but rather fit in its surroundings, acting as a complement to its grander adjacent rooms,” says designer Randy O’Neil of RENNAISANCE TILE & BATH, which was the exclusive tile and stone provider for the Southeastern Showhouse. O’Neil married marble with bespoke elements for a treasure box of a space featuring three-dimensional design. A custom marble-top vanity with unlacquered brass legs and a coordinating O’Neil Ruppel Bridget faucet reference the classic look of the 1960s, when the home was built. A timeless herringbone pattern continues from the honed Italian Calacatta marble floors to the raised-panel wainscot. “The selection of a single marble throughout allows for the patterns to play off one another without overwhelming the small space,” O’Neil says. —Lori Johnston 131

FRESH Take Laundry rooms lend themselves more to function than fashion, but MINHNUYET HARDY blended both in a smart and sophisticated manner. “I wanted to show that glamour and style can coexist harmoniously in the most common, multifunctional of spaces, and it can be beautiful, as well as functional,” she says. The laundry room’s soaring 11foot ceiling demanded drama to balance the white cabinetry and herringbone tile flooring. Hardy accomplished that with a gold, geometric, textured Phillip Jeffries wallcovering and a mercury glass chandelier from Arteriors with an interlocking chain that echoes the design of a large abstract painting by Steve McKenzie. She envisioned a family with three children using the laundry and vestibule, which provides ample storage. From the coffee bar in the vestibule to the sparkle of mixed metals in the lighting, mirrors and accessories, Hardy turned one of the home’s hardest-working rooms into a chic space. —Lori Johnston

NATURAL Blend The evolution and transformation of the generous guest space began when the homeowner selected white shiplap sliding doors as a nod to the barn that once stood on the property. “The doors make the distinction between the sitting space and en-suite bedroom, allowing us to treat the spaces separately while blending similar elements together throughout the apartment,” says CINDY INGRAM OF ETHAN ALLEN. By featuring two Ethan Allen collections—one appropriately named Buckhead—Ingram designated areas for sleeping, dining, conducting business and entertaining. Amid the clean palette of neutrals, black and white, design elements such as wicker, stone, greenery and images of feathers introduced a play on texture, form and nature. “After making the design plans and meeting with the homeowner, it was interesting to find out that she loved the feather artwork being used and, in fact, has her own collection of feathers,” Ingram says. —Lori Johnston

In
THE COSTA RICAN COMMUNITY OF LAS CATALINAS, both sights and sounds guide your senses through this tropical sliver of paradise. Vibrant orange-red sunsets, coupled with the rhythmic beat of the surf, simultaneously induce both inner contemplation and outward bursts of joy. From Charles and Ginny Brewer’s coastal-chic Las Catalinas perch, interior designer Beth Webb has granted Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles entrée into what feels like the community’s beating heart; its inner sanctum. Designed to be intimate enough for family, but expansive enough for the couple’s large gatherings, the house, says Webb, was designed to frame its surrounding ocean vistas; to open “itself to the environment in the most welcoming way.” From the main floor’s ocean-facing loggia, open-air breezes balance out Costa Rica’s heat and humidity. From here, Webb says, “scents, sights and sounds all remind us that nature is our great sensualist.” Typically an outdoor living room, Webb has decided to transform this airy loggia into an intimate space in which to dine al fresco. Blooms for the centerpieces were foraged on an afternoon walk; freshly fruited bananas have been employed as decoration; and ripe fruits have been juiced for cocktails and garnishes. The sense of place Webb has created—for this gathering in particular, and with the Brewer residence as a whole—simply couldn’t feel more acute. That precise provocation of sensuality, at every step of the design process, is what compelled Webb to compile her worldly portfolio into
her freshly debuted book, An Eye for Beauty: Rooms that Speak to the Senses (Rizzoli, $50). Each chapter is devoted to one of the senses—how Webb’s environments elegantly evoke them; how they set the stage for living well—and all are lavishly illustrated through the designer’s lens of luxuriously light simplicity. Driven early on in her career by the dictum that you learn by looking (the result of a Sotheby’s certificate program in London), Webb believes that the senses, informed by experience—seeing, touching, feeling—are absolutely essential to connoisseurship of any kind. Her educated eye implores today’s digital-age readers to take that tactile philosophy to heart, whether it’s taking the time to explore the physical personality of an object (its patina, finish and surface), or embracing the fragrances or cacophony just outside our windows (in Costa Rica, it’s the surf, parakeets, and, sometimes, howler monkeys). Webb’s inherent love of beauty— of elevating the everyday—is evident in each of the residences featured in An Eye for Beauty, from the nuanced, layered details of an artfully designed coffee table vignette, to the more atmospheric—a emotional feeling that may not necessarily be traceable. As Veranda Editor-in-Chief Clinton Smith writes in the foreword: “The nuances are often indiscernable at first, but after a while, the little details that define her work shine through.” Honing our own eyes for beauty may not come as quickly or as easily, but Webb’s poetic new tome certainly guides us with this inspiring, sensory-filled path. 141

Atlanta-based interior designer Beth Webb sheds light on her clean-lined, intuitive approach to decorating in her debut book, An Eye for Beauty: Rooms that Speak to the Senses (Rizzoli, $50), which hits bookstores this month. Featuring 175 color photographs of Webb’s clean-lined interiors, as well as a foreword by Veranda’s Clinton Smith, the tome illustrates Webb’s principles for cultivating a sense of well-being through design. A master of creating tailored and timeless homes, Webb explores the five senses as they apply to interior design, approaching each room as its own environment.

CASA SAN AGUSTIN
CARTEGENA DE INDIAS, COLOMBIA, MIGHT be one of the best-kept travel secrets of all time. No longer a no-go zone, Cartegena is gorgeously lush yet charming with a bohemian authenticity—and it’s one of friendliest places on the planet. To fully appreciate Cartegena today is to understand the new, renewed spirit of its people. After many left in the early 2000s, discouraged by the economy and the violence, the migration back to Colombia of young entrepreneurs who assumed they’d have to make their fortunes elsewhere explains the country’s socio-economic coming of age. As one of the oldest cities in the New World, Cartegena is astoundingly well-preserved. Known for its imposing wall built by the Spaniards, “El Centro” is a historical Old City center, where century-worn cobblestone streets beg to be wandered without hurry. In this walled city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, colonial treasures mix with modern storefronts, hip cafes, art galleries and bougainvillea-draped courtyards that offer a glimpse of a modern-but-laid-back Latino lifestyle. Inside the walls, boutique hotels offer a personal and unique experience beyond anything that can be found in popular ‘luxury’ hotel chains. As one of the Leading Hotels of the World, Casa San Agustin feels like home, perhaps because it once was—three historic houses, to be exact, that were elegantly joined and restored to create one jaw-droppingly beautiful hotel. Last year, the hotel won TripAdvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Award as the #1 Hotel in Colombia. With 17th-century Spanish colonial architecture as a canvas, South Carolina-based designer Kelley McRorie chose refined, bespoke furnishings and layered natural textures to adorn each of 20 guest rooms and ten suites, as well as the library and lounges. The result is tastefully chic. Details throughout the hotel evoke the rich history of the era, with (original) massive carved wooden beams defining the high ceilings, colorful, handmade tile and hand wrought-iron details in hallways and lounges. Alma, the hotel’s restaurant (also designed by McRorie), is one the most celebrated restaurants in Cartegena and is perhaps the most beautiful—cozy and romantic, but stately. The food is a non-fussy style of executive chef Heberto Eljach’s take on Caribbean/Colombian cuisine with a few American touches thrown in, like delicious ceviches and tartares alongside braised oxtail with lobster risotto, or aged Angus Beef® New York strip with blue cheese butter and fried Swiss chard. Alma’s lavish breakfast buffet, showing off a colorful array of local fruits, cheeses and pastries, accompanies made-to-order egg dishes and can be enjoyed in the restaurant, on the charming open-air patio, or by the pool.

The Casa San Agustin pool is a story in itself. Named World’s Coolest Plunge Pool by Travel+Leisure in 2015, it is breathtaking. It connects the three houses as it doglegs around an ancient aqueduct tucked into the hotel’s epicenter. The adjacent pool bar is a convivial place to try a signature cocktail, complete with exotic fruits, herbs and spices, garnished with a spiraled cucumber or citrus peel. There is also a bar on the rooftop solarium—a private lounging area where the only sounds are chirping birds or an occasional splash in the pool below. A recent renovation of the hotel spa, Aurum (latin for gold), reveals the vision of Colombian architect Miguel Soto. The space is lavished with gold tiles and patterns that symbolize “radiance, health and new beginnings” bestowed to Earth by the Sun. Treatments feature local, natural ingredients such as Colombian coffee, tobacco, volcanic mud, sea fennel, sarsaparilla and sea salt. The spa’s oils and lotions are botanical and organic. Cartegena is a wonderland—a city created for exploration. While in the Walled City, visit El Barón Cafe for an artisan cocktail or Cafe San Alberto to sip what is reputed to be the best coffee in Colombia. Venture out of the Walled City for a walk through the tunnels and to the top of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas (in military use from 1536-1767), where the Spaniards sought to fend off the British. Panoramic views of the city are best seen from the top of the fort. But perhaps the most authentic way to experience the local character of Cartegena is to visit the former working-class neighborhood of Getsemani. Candy-bright, noisy, festive and the “it” place for funky art, drinking dens, tapas bars and salsa dancing, Getsemani is a party all hours of the day and night. Take in the sights slowly, or risk being overwhelmed. It is impossible not to stop to study the hand-painted murals or to peek over the shoulder of residents playing board games on the sidewalk. The welcoming and uber-friendly people of Cartegena will see to it that you have a pleasant time and will want to revisit soon. Bask in the joy, and don’t be surprised if you’re asked to join in a game of street checkers. hotelcasasanagustin.com 148

ON ISLAND TIME
Nestled off the coast of South Carolina on historic Daufuskie Island, Haig Point provides a low-key Lindsey Wohlfrom Lowcountry getaway WRITTEN BY
150
JUST A 30-MINUTE FERRY RIDE from the mainland, Haig Point is situated at the northern tip of the southernmost sea island in South Carolina. The lush surroundings, tight-knit community and tranquil sunsets make this Southern retreat feel like a home away from home. Upon disembarking, guests will approach the Strachan Mansion, where they can unwind at the bar, take in the ocean views from a cozy perch or play billiards. From here, visitors may pick up golf carts or bicycles at the Concierge Office—there are no cars allowed on the island—and start exploring sites within the community, including the tabby ruins (remains of plantation dwellings) and the Haig Point Lighthouse, a historic landmark built in 1873 that’s currently used as a guesthouse and event venue. Despite its private-island feel, the 1,100-acre community is well appointed with all the luxuries of an exclusive resort, including gourmet dining at the Calibogue Club, a scenic 20-hole Rees Jones Signature championship golf course—voted one of the world’s 100 greatest courses by Golf magazine—and a private beach club with a full-service, resort-style pool overlooking Calibogue Sound.

Other amenities include the Haig Point Fitness Center, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, an outdoor pool and group fitness classes; a private equestrian center, where guests and members can take lessons, board their horses and enjoy trail rides around the property; and the Haig Point Tennis Center, featuring six Har-Tru courts where guests can play under private instruction or as part of a league. For those looking for adventure outside the community, a quick golf cart ride will take you to spots like historic Silver Dew Winery, Daufuskie Island Rum Company and the Iron Fish Gallery, which features works from awardwinning metal sculptor Chase Allen. Guests can also enjoy activities like guided wildlife tours, crabbing, fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding—just be sure to make it back in time for happy hour overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway at the Calibogue Club. With its accommodating staff, friendly residents and exceptional amenities, Haig Point will leave you with a true appreciation for Southern hospitality—and waterfront sunsets. haigpoint.com

HERE’S THE ULTIMATE WAY TO EXPERIENCE Walt Disney World: live there. Just four miles from the park (but still on property), and down the main street aptly named Dream Tree Boulevard, lies an ultra-exclusive enclave of homes called Golden Oak. For Disneyphiles (and non), owning a home at Golden Oak at Walt Disney World® Resort is like living in paradise, but it’s a paradise with perks. Master-planned and developed by Walt Disney Imagineering, the luxurious Golden Oak is a 980-acre gated community of both residential and commercial zones, with plans to have fewer than 300 residences at full buildout. The elegant homes, built under strict covenants to maintain the neighborhood aesthetic and Disney integrity, start at $2 million. Architecture is primarily inspired by Mediterranean and Caribbean styles, with Dutch, Italian and Spanish design touches. The land is a nature preserve with unspoiled landscapes, water features, footbridges and walking trails. At the center of the property, the 443-guest room Four Seasons Resort Orlando sits majestically on a hill like Cinderella’s Castle. The hotel and surrounding 26-acres function as a recreational wonderland for Golden Oak residents, providing access to certain amenities such as world-class

dining, a Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole golf course, full-service spa and meeting facilities. Five acres of the property make up Explorer Island—a water park with a splash zone, lazy river and water slides—and The Mansion for indoor games and activities. Tucked deep into the lush Golden Oak neighborhood is the newest collection of homes to be built within Golden Oak—the Four Seasons Private Residences Orlando. These breathtaking mansions (only 30 homesites available) offer the ultimate in privacy, with a lifestyle that includes superior services and access to the Four Seasons Resort and Walt Disney World®. Homeowners in the Four Seasons Private Residences also are granted unlimited entry to the Golden Oak Club, a members-only social and recreational club, where they are welcome to join in many events, classes and neighborhood gatherings. Also included is a membership to Club Life which includes top-level packages of Disney experiences. The conciergestyle approach delivers assistance with select personal, residential and Walt Disney World® Resort requests. Six builders, hand-picked for their extraordinary craftsmanship and attention to detail, are designated to build here exclusively. The stunning homes start at $5 million and represent a variety of styles. Inside, it’s fun to spot the “hidden Mickeys” integrated at the homeowner’s discretion, that are discovered in random places. For example, bathroom floor tiles that have tiny mouse ears as spacers, or used subtly as a stair rail motif—clever reminders that you are part of the World of Disney. It’s all part of the land of magic, the land of dreams. Perhaps the grandest thing about living at Four Seasons Private Residences Orlando at Walt Disney World®? BIG SKY RESORT
Majestic mountains and great adventures under a vast blue sky WRITTEN BY

Brian McCallen
THERE IS A PLACE TO UNWIND in the American West, a sprawling ski destination in the northern Rockies that slips into T-shirts and sandals when summer arrives. Located an hour’s drive south of Bozeman, a trendy little town known for its gastropubs (microbrews, bison burgers) and the Museum of the Rockies (dinosaurs!), Big Sky Resort loomed into view after the 1992 release of A River Runs Through It, the fly-fishing classic filmed on the nearby Gallatin River. Unmatched for alpine splendor, Big Sky is dominated by Lone Mountain, a 11,166-foot, Matterhorn-like peak that pierces the sky and ranks among the tallest in the Madison Range. On a typically sunny day, the play of shadow and light on its slopes is mesmerizing. Big Sky recently embarked on a 10-year development program that will place it alongside top-tier mountain resorts such as Aspen, Colorado; Sun Valley, Idaho; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In addition to its massive size and rustic charm, it has one distinct advantage: The resort is only 18 miles from the northern boundary of Yellowstone Na-

THE MONTANA EXPERIENCE In conjunction with Moonlight Basin, its sister property, Big Sky’s premier three-night “Stay and Play” package features accommodations in a private residence, a day of fishing on the Madison River, a sport-
tional Park, the oldest national park (1872) and the most active geothermal region on earth. Despite the anticipated growth, Big Sky Resort will always be a “more rawhide, less chiffon” getaway for those who crave outdoor adventures, including hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, zip line tours, rock climbing and fly-fishing on blue-ribbon trout streams. Wildlife? You’re likely to see elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep and moose. Kids may have the best of it at Big Sky. The Ramcharger chair lift ascends from Big Sky’s village plaza to Adventure Mountain, a summertime playground where kids can try their hand at archery, bungee trampoline, disc golf and other games. Pint-sized prospectors can dump rubble into a sluice and sift for gemstones. Ramcharger also leads to Everett’s 8800, a log chalet set at 8,800 feet that features American alpine fare at its finest. (The morel mushrooms served on butter-grilled sourdough are alone worth the ride up the mountain.) Big Sky accommodations are available at multi-bedroom lodges, cabins and chalets, as well as the Summit, one of the finest slope-side hotels in the Rockies. bigskyresort.com

PARADISE FOUND
Ecology meets luxury at Brando Island WRITTEN BY
156
Cathy Whitlock
TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUE MEANING of paradise, one needs look no further than The Brando, an island where crystal aquamarine waters, pristine white-sand beaches, tranquility and luxury rule the day. First of all, a little history lesson is in order. Brando Island—yes, named after the Oscar-winning actor Marlon, who needs no introduction—is an atoll nestled on the private island of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia just 30 miles northeast of Tahiti. Discovered by the screen legend while filming the 1962 classic Mutiny on the Bounty, the island captivated Brando with its beauty, and he made it his home, purchasing it in 1966. At the time, the actor’s vision was a lofty, albeit prescient one: He dreamed of the island as a center for research and education and a model of sustainability to be enjoyed by residents, scientists and guests. In 1999, he partnered with longtime Tahitian resident and hotelier Richard Bailey, and the result was the world’s first post-carbon eco-luxury resort, a fivestar haven where the natural beauty is preserved through innovative technologies. The resort’s core philosophy—in which harmony, simplicity and luxury coexist with authenticity and the environment—is predominant throughout

the island. Designed by French architectural firm Pierre-Jean Picart and decorated by French interior architect Gilles Lebourgne of AIC/ Gilles Lebourgne, the 35 one-, two- and threebedroom villas (private homes for sale are in the works) are located on the lagoon with their own plunge pool, living and media room, and outdoor tub and dining pavilion. “The idea, evident when you visit the atoll, was to increase the view, to be in a nest to see the birds, the sky and the sea … hidden in the trees. The aim was to feel [as if you were in] in a new paradise,” Lebourgne says. “For me, the luxury is the space, and the communication between each room must be obvious and clear, and [must] try to reach a kind of floating space,” as depicted by the various levels of living spaces. Contemporary sensibilities with a nod to Polynesian heritage contribute to the designer’s idea of a “smart hut” that is elegant, classic and devoid of trends. The selection of materials keeps with the island’s credo and, as Lebourgne explains, “preserves the natural reserves of the earth.” This translates into woven reconstituted oak for the walls, bamboo for the flooring, and pebbles for the bathroom and shower surfaces. For the color palette, Lebourgne kept it as simple as possible: “As Mies van der Rohe says, ‘Less is more,’” he notes. “Colored spaces are too boring

Bike riding is a popular activity on this idyllic island. clockwise, from above The entrance to the resort’s fine dining restaurant Les Mutinés. for me and fight with the environment.” Blonde, off-white and beige color tones in the furnishings provide a contrast to the custom furniture made of exotic sucupira woods as the indoors seamlessly meet the outdoors. The Brando’s two restaurants and bars also echo the aesthetic. With its curved ceiling arc that resembles a boat, the fine dining restaurant Les Mutinés gives the sensation of dining on a lagoon while enjoying East/West fusion and French cuisine. The designs of the Varua spa are one with nature as weaves of driftwood make up the individual spa “nests,” perfect for a Tahitian tamanu oil scrub treatment or coconut oil massage. With an amazingly attentive staff ready to tend to your every need, it’s the perfect spot for a romantic anniversary or honeymoon (Pippa Middleton just spent the first leg of her postwedding holiday there); to write a book (former president Obama was recently seen working on his memoir); or, if you are a celebrity, to unplug and unwind (a close friend of Brando’s, actor Johnny Depp, was spotted at the resort’s Bob’s Bar this summer). Activities are as varied as the island’s flora and fauna and range from bike riding (breathe in the scenery and clean air, as only golf carts—no cars— are allowed), paddleboarding, snorkeling and sailing to visiting nearby Bird Island for an up-close and personal look at the lesser birds, the noddies and the majestic frigate birds of paradise. Lucky guests can catch large sea turtles laying their eggs under the palm trees during nesting season. You can also turn your day into a learning experience with Polynesian language lessons or take a class on how to tie and paint your own pareu. For the ecologically minded, a tour of the island’s facilities offers a fascinating look at the world’s first resort to achieve Net Zero Energy Use—turning renewable resources such as coconut oil, solar and biofuels into energy and piping seawater to land to use for air conditioning, among other sustainable practices. While experiencing the feeling of being on a desert island after a day spent on “island time,” it’s easy to see the allure that captured the actor’s attention five-plus decades ago. At The Brando, luxury is unplugged,” says Bailey. “It is a place where indulgence lives hand in hand with respect for the environment.” 158

Paradise How to Get There Depending on where you live, traveling to The Brando can be a long journey. It’s best to fly to Los Angeles and take the night flight to Papeete, Tahiti, via Air Tahiti Nui airlines. From there, Air Tetiaroa will take you to the island on one of its private, eight-passenger planes. (Be sure to sit on the left side of the plane for panoramic, postcard-worthy sea views.) If time is on your side, spend a day or two taking in the local scenery in the nation’s capital at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, or take an excursion and stay in an overwater villa at the Intercontinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa. In partnership with The Brando, be sure to book the resort’s newly designed Brando villa with unparalleled views of Mount Otemanu.

Westward, Whoa!
M
ANY THINGS SHOCKED ME when I moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles, but none more than its inhabitants. Gone were the gentility and charm of Southern manners and etiquette; instead I discovered the culture of “me” that seems to permeate LA. Sure, I had read that Los Angeles was ranked by Forbes as “One of America’s Vainest Cities,” but I was highly unprepared for the athleisure trend; a bit unnerved to find new acquaintances more reliant on their personal trainers than their life partners; and amused to learn that, in a city where one’s car is a symbol of one’s identity, Range Rovers have become downright bourgeois. In Atlanta, my stationery drawer was fully stocked for the constant stream of thank-you notes sent after every dinner party I attended. In LA, I was mocked for sending a handwritten note, and when I invited my LA carpool to my home for dinner, they much preferred a restaurant (why would I want to cook?). Why write a thank-you note when you can send a fish-face selfie from the spa with a text message “too 168
much fun—detoxing for the week!” Why iron linen napkins when you can use a poly-blend one at a restaurant? In fairness, if Angelenos are devoted to themselves and their images, Atlantans are obsessed with their homes. The hallmark of the South is to open one’s home—formally or informally—for the joy of both guests and hosts. Holidays, birthdays, graduations, and weddings require numerous sets of linens and china, and consultations with florists. Designers are the “personal trainers” of the South, often becoming BFF’s with their clients while influencing both home design and lifestyle. Atlantans dress for the occasion, reserving leggings for the gym and flip-flops for the pool. Therein lies the difference: Southerners extend invitations to share with guests, while Angelenos claw for singular attention. If handwritten thank-yous and dinner invitations count among my social faux pas in LA, then excuse me while I continue to misstep my way through this adventure! Los Angeles might be larger than Atlanta, but the social graces book is, like its citizens, noticeably slimmer.
