EQUINE AFFAIR

Equestrian paintings by JULIE FERRIS reveal her lifelong love for horses and art Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

FEW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS know what their college major might be, but Julie Ferris always knew that she would major in art and become an equine artist. From her elementary school days spent coloring to the riding lessons she continued through high school, Ferris spent her time melding her passions. “I’ve always been an animal person, and horses and art were childhood interests that developed simultaneously,” she says. Ferris attended SCAD where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting with a minor in equestrian studies, and earned a spot on the college equestrian team. “Although SCAD gives a broad range of areas in which to focus, I never deviated from my pursuit of exploring the horse and incorporating it into my projects because you can never know too much about a subject,” says Ferris. Influenced by renowned artists that span centuries and genres, such as George Stubbs, Rosa Bonheur and Deborah Butterfield, Ferris studied their use of light, form, color and sculpture as she developed her own unique style of equestrian portraiture. Ferris’ pieces are large format, oil-on-canvas paintings and the majority of her work is commissioned. While most of her portraits depict horses owned by clients, Ferris also accepts commissions from people who don’t own a horse, but want to have an equine painting. In either instance, the process is the same as it involves meeting the client, the horse and reviewing photos to determine the exact details. Ferris’ signature aesthetic is a white background with the horse positioned above a slightly reflective base. “The textured white backgrounds are symbolic of truth and light so that the subjects are portrayed energetically and reveal their beauty in a bright and simple way. I want the horses to feel alive on the canvas, as if they’re glistening in the sun telling us they are,” says Ferris. Whether her days are spent riding her own horse or painting in her studio, Ferris’ intertwined passions reveal an artist whose paintings exude sensitivity, eloquence and an innate understanding of her beloved subjects.

RETAIL DEMAND REMAINS STRONG in the Atlanta market, and Buckhead staple MATHEWS FURNITURE + DESIGN is charging forward with expanded partnerships and a fresh renovation. “When COVID-19 started, our business was still great. It even increased,” says Nina Nash Long, who is an in-house designer for the retailer that has been serving Atlanta for nearly 40 years. “We decided to do the renovation now. When everything reopens, we will have this beautiful, shiny new store, ready to go,” Nash Long says. A spring completion is projected, though the 15,000-square-foot showroom has remained open through the three-phase renovation (“It’s a little like musical chairs,” she says). Regulars will notice new floor-to-ceiling custom windows and steel doors for more natural light, sleek new concrete floors, updated architectural trim and more. Look for an expanded partnership with Chaddock Furniture Workroom, including a range of pieces designed by Mark D. Sikes, from skirted upholstery to urn-topped pedestals. “It’s easy to make mistakes purchasing online,” Nash Long says, reiterating the advantages of being able to touch, feel and try furniture and decor before buying. “I think in-person, when it comes to the home, is better.”

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham COLOR PREFERENCE is as much a part of a person’s personality as, say, a sense of humor or a positive attitude. Some are drawn to bright colors for their exuberance, while others favor soothing, neutral shades. Whatever the reason we gravitate to certain colors over others, it’s fair to say that once we have established our favorites, we’re drawn to them for life. Even many designers, who work with color daily, have been known to play favorites. The great Albert Hadley may have had a way with all color shades, from sky blue to beiges and browns, but there is one color in particular he will forever be associated with: red, which he famously used to dramatic effect both in his own home and those of his clients. Has there ever been a more lauded American interior than the lacquered red library he designed for Brooke Astor? Throughout her career, that doyenne of 20th-century design Dorothy Draper steadfastly favored robust colors, particularly shades of azalea pink or deep green which she often paired with black-and-white checkerboard floors and oversize architectural accents. According to those who knew her, Draper had a forceful personality, which might explain her fondness for bold hues. She was so adamant about decorating with colorful shades that she was known to say, “Show me nothing that looks like gravy!” In other words, drab was not in Draper’s color vocabulary. Then there was Billy Baldwin, a designer who, like his style successor Albert Hadley, appreciated color in all of its various hues. His design talent was so immense that whichever color he worked with, whether it be pink or yellow, always appeared at its very best. But for a man with such a well-honed color sense, Baldwin’s greatest partiality was for neutral shades, especially chocolate brown. By lacquering the walls of his studio apartment in dark brown paint, he not only gave himself the opportunity to revel in his preferred shade, but he also propelled glossy dark brown to its permanent status as one of the chicest paint colors in American design.

CELEBRATED CHEF JONATHAN WAXMAN and executive chef Andrew Cacioppo give Italian-inspired cuisine a Southern twist in their latest venture, Baffi. With locally sourced ingredients and an ever changing menu of seasonal dishes, guests receive the best of both culinary worlds. “There are a lot of connections between Italian food and Southern cuisine, mainly how both have a respect for the ingredients and letting them shine,” says Waxman. “We wanted to find that perfect balance between Italy and Atlanta by incorporating essentials from both areas.” This includes dishes such as the mascarpone grits paired with a braised porkand-veal meatball, or the JW roasted chicken with rosemary potatoes and salsa verde. The open kitchen and wood-burning hearth from Atlanta artisan Chris Demant “adds to the connection, highlighting Italian cookery and Southern grill and barbecue culture,” says Waxman. Housed in the former Donetto space in West Midtown and refreshed by architect Sara Hawker, the restaurant takes on an airy appeal with floor-to-ceiling windows and the bar’s white Parisian tile and oak top. Though the restaurant isn’t operating at full capacity due to the pandemic, they have creatively continued to serve customers, including inside dining, alfresco or take home meals, as well as Baffi Provisions, a marketplace with fresh housemade pastas, meats and more. Says Waxman, “Restaurants serve as a place to gather with family or friends to enjoy food, drinks and conversations. While the method of how this gets accomplished has slightly changed ... our goal at Baffi is to provide guests with the warmth and comfort that only restaurants are able to.” baffiatlanta.com

Divine Details

T

In character of the Greek Revival movement, a sense of formality was applied to the leaded-glass front door and the finely detailed moldings in the entry hall. An antique fixture from Adairsville-based lighting specialist Eloise Pickard provides illumination during the evening. The wood floors are through Vintage Lumber Sales.

THE PRIMORDIAL LANDSCAPE of Spring Island remains much as it did when the famed naturalist John James Audubon made his tour of the South Carolina Lowcountry in the 1830s. Towering Live Oaks draped in Spanish moss form a canopy over low-lying palmettos and Spartina grasses, an ancient buffer against the tranquil salt marshes along the sea islands. Indeed, it is the painstaking commitment to ecological preservation and the naturally occurring beauty of this coastal refuge which has drawn residents like Ron and Susan Morrow to Spring Island for many years now. “It’s a very romantic spot all the time,” says Susan Morrow, who along with her husband commissioned Atlanta-based Historical Concepts to design a waterfront compound anchored by a Greek Revival-influenced residence with prominent views across the tidal marshes. “Somehow the light comes through the trees, and even on a gray day, you have this dappled light and it’s kind of like being in the enchanted forest.” Together with Historical Concepts’ founder Jim Strickland, whose firm has worked in the Lowcountry for nearly three decades, the Morrows set about devising a permanent residence that respected the area’s historical architectural precedents, while sensitively siting the raised structure to maximize views across the water. “The house is a very long, linear house, but all of the rooms are facing the marsh,” says Strickland. “Our major thrust was to ensure that everyone could enjoy that.”

Space Savvy

right What began as a casual scullery between the kitchen and dining room grew to incorporate a large wine collection, concealed within the cabinetry. left Details abound in the Morrows’ kitchen: high-relief ceramic backsplash tiles were sculpted by local artist Lark Smith to reflect the live oak trees found throughout the property. A collection of antique brass chandeliers was chosen from the collection of Eloise Pickard.

To recreate the spirit of the Greek Revival residence that might have been found in the Lowcountry generations ago, Strickland’s team drew from a deep well of historic resources, including architect Asher Benjamin’s The Architect, or Practical House Carpenter (1830), which provided a rich springboard for understanding the early 19th-century interpretation of Greek Revival in America. Richly layered millwork, moldings and carved mantelpieces—all true to period form—provide a cloak of chronological anonymity to the 21st-century home. “Our challenge became how to tell a story with the architecture and break that down in a way that felt natural to the place,” says Clay Rokicki, a principal at Historical Concepts who, alongside Strickland, helmed the design of the Morrows’ home. The end result is a family home that balances Greek Revival formality with characteristic Lowcountry geniality. Perhaps most impressive is the harmonious relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, careful window placement to maximize views, and the arrangement of multiple porches—all with different purposes—to make the most of the coastal setting. “I had the best compliment,” says Morrow. “Someone from the architectural review board came over to walk me through a project and she said, ‘The thing I love about this house is that it looks as though it’s always been here.’ And that’s a credit to Jim Strickland—he knows how to do that.” See Resources, Page 79. 39

AFTER DREAMING FOR YEARS of building a French Normandy-style home on one of Atlanta’s toniest thoroughfares, a cosmopolitan couple with two teenage daughters finally decided to pull the proverbial trigger. Armed with inspiration images they took during their overseas travels, the owners asked architect Greg Palmer of Harrison Design and interior designer Suzanne Kasler, who had collaborated on their former house years ago, to bring their vision to life. The result is a sprawling stucco dwelling with limestone detailing and a prominent turret that houses an elegant serpentine stairway. Iron-paneled windows, intricate wall moldings and details such as a recurring quatrefoil motif add to the rich sense of history and character. 49

IRON-PANELED WINDOWS, INTRICATE WALL MOLDINGS AND A RECURRING QUATREFOIL MOTIF ADD HISTORY AND CHARACTER. “It’s a house of today, but it’s informed by what they saw on their travels,” says Palmer, who worked on the project with colleague and designer Robbie Pich. “We took the best of that style and equipped it with all the modern-day conveniences.” Distinguished by its lofty groin vault ceiling and tall arched iron windows and doors, the family room opens out onto a porch area with similar dimensions and a matching limestone fireplace, creating an indoor-outdoor experience that’s nothing if not au courant. Silk draperies with a subtle pattern enliven the room’s more neutral palette—one of many blue hues found throughout the decor. “The house flows in a quiet way,” Kasler says, noting blue is the wife’s favorite color. Indeed, sky blue draperies likewise adorn the two-story walnut-paneled library, where a quartet of tufted leather chairs surround a light blue velvet ottoman in front of an intricate stone fireplace with the same quatrefoil detailing. 50

To that end, the designer incorporated plush, clean-lined furnishings alongside antiques and modern artwork, such as a pair of abstract paintings—one in blue, the other in blush—in the airy and light-filled music room, which is distinguished by ornate wall and ceiling moldings. The seamless blend of influences has delighted the owners, who showed their appreciation for a job well done by hosting the design team for a catered dinner. “That’s when we can really celebrate,” Kasler says. “The biggest success on any project is when the clients are happy and love the end result.” See Resources, Page 79. 55

TANTALIZINGLY LOCATED down a long drive surrounded by thick groves of trees, there’s something magical about the 1920sera brick-and-stone home that Melanie Turner decorated for a young family with three children, who returned to Atlanta after years in the Bay area. “It’s a fairytale setting, and the house was asking for an influx of life, vibrancy and joy,” she says. “We wanted it to feel collected and special.” Inspired by the bosky surroundings, a hand-painted wallcovering featuring lush trees, colorful flowers and meaningful quotes and sayings creates an enchanting first impression in the front foyer—a whimsical backdrop for an oil painting of a bear dressed in formal attire. “Their son was born in California,” says Turner, noting the grizzly is the state’s official animal. “Humor is important in design.”

is a timeless color combination, yet beyond stripes, checks and chintzes are fresh fabric and wallpaper designs that celebrate flora in all of its natural beauty. Everything from ferns to fruit take on a stylized quality when blue motifs are partnered with white, cream or ivory backgrounds. Whether classic or contemporary, it’s no wonder the palette continues to be a perennial favorite. —Clinton Smith

ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE

THE 2021 SOUTHEASTERN DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE is French architecture with an ode to Art Deco. The new 8,000- square-foot residence with a pool was custom-built by Benecki Homes. Benecki Homes brought together a collaboration of the best artisans, craftspeople, land planners, interior specifiers and architects in the Southeast to create TUXEDO AT THE PARK. The home, which has five bedrooms, five full baths, three half baths and a three-car garage, is situated on a half acre across from Atlanta’s beloved Chastain Park. Curvaceous ceilings, custom tile, fluted detailing and Venetian plaster walls, ceilings, stairs and moldings strike the balance between the home’s French Art Deco aesthetic and transitional interiors with texture. Source selected luxurious interior finishes, such as European white oak flooring, French limestone, marble and onyx. A stucco exterior and limestone surround leads to the steel front door. The residence is an entertainer’s dream. The main level features a modern open floor plan with a salon, paneled study, dining room, kitchen with an island and barrel vault ceiling covered in subway tiles, a laundry room and a mudroom. The home’s livable, functional design includes custom his and her closets in the master suite, a butler’s pantry set off with an iron screen, and an upper level featuring four bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a laundry room and a playroom. Folding glass walls fully open the pool lounge to the pool and backyard with artificial turf for active lifestyles. A bar, game room with a billiards table, golf simulator lounge, gym and TV room are among the spaces in the finished basement built for play. The courtyard-style layout and the combination of arched steel windows, clerestory windows in the stair hall, transoms and circular windows provide an interplay of light that gives the home its airy nature. Green serves as a cohesive color throughout the showhouse, which will feature the work of the Southeast’s top interior designers. —Lori Johnston

WELCOME! IS THERE ANYTHING MORE EXCITING than seeing (and smelling) the first blooms of spring? After a particularly long

MEET THE COMMITTEE 2021 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens

winter filled with many uncertainties, flowering branches and colorful buds offer up a happy “hello,” breathing life back into not only our city, but ourselves as well. Like the season, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has been hard at work breathing that same life into our sixth-annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse! Our 2021 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens, presented by BENECKI HOMES, is a collaboration between a design-build dream team: CYDNEY MITCHELL for SOURCE; residential designer WILLIAM T. BAKER; JASON COLE of LORI HOJNOWSKI BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN

Jason Cole Construction and LAND PLUS ASSOCIATES. We’re also welcoming spring by highlighting some of the Southeast’s top design talents. As you walk through the home, you’ll tour the work of design firms from Atlanta and across the Southeast—from Alabama to Tennessee and beyond. We are delighted to announce this year’s Honorary Chairs, MELANIE TURNER of Melanie Turner Interiors , who has designed the pool lounge and bar, and PHOEBE HOWARD of Mrs. Howard, who has designed the showhouse dining room. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is thrilled to welcome back the Atlanta History Center as this year’s beneficiary. We are honored to work with an organization dedicated to studying and preserving Atlanta’s rich history. Welcome to the 2021 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens!

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Atlanta History Center

Visit atlantahistorycenter.com for more information

Founded in 1926, the ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER is a community-focused, not-for-profit institution that seeks to connect people, history and culture through a variety of experiences and resources. Located on 33 acres in the heart of Buckhead, the History Center features hands-on history through award-winning exhibitions; the Kenan Research Center; historic houses, including the Wood Family Cabin, Smith Family Farm and Swan House; and enchanting Goizueta Gardens, interactive activities and a variety of year-round adult and family programs. Each year, the Atlanta History Center serves more than 50,000 schoolchildren through class field trips or classroom outreach by Atlanta History Center education staff. And everyone has the opportunity to “meet the past” every weekend through a variety of museum theater performances in our new signature exhibition, Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta. The History Center’s approach to storytelling creates a special space for

18

dialogue, discovery and meaning that gives rise to a multidimensional, shared understanding of our city. The Atlanta History Center has been on an accelerated path to enhance the visitor experience in every way. A newly expanded atrium has transformed the West Paces Ferry entrance into a recognizable and inviting entrance. Inside, guests enjoy the local flavor of Souper Jenny Café, as well as Atlanta-owned BRASH coffee. Its new museum shop and bookstore is a warm and eclectic space offering a unique twist on the traditional museum shopping experience, and features a wide selection of books, local artist items and witty Atlanta History Center-branded merchandise. The new Atlanta Cyclorama and Texas locomotive experiences in the Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker Cyclorama building and Rollins gallery opened in February 2019, bringing history full circle and making Atlanta’s History Center a one-stop shop for history.

n 1996, Phoebe and Jim Howard opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, Florida, hoping to demystify the decorating process for their customers. Five

years later, they added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern appeal. Now, the Howards have Mrs. Howard and Max & Company stores in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Atlanta, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Over the years, Phoebe’s penchant for creating stylish spaces has evolved into her own brand of decorating, which has garnered praise from national media as well as her clients. Known for her fresh take on traditional style, Phoebe’s work can only be characterized by its timelessness and her mantra to “keep it pretty.”
