MY FATHER RECENTLY completed a 200-mile hike from Portugal to Spain. An adventure-seeker at his core, it was the first of many walking excursions he plans to take around the world. In 2013, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles first reported on the launch of a beautiful new homegrown textile line by Clay McLaurin Studio. Fast forward nearly a decade to today, and the collection has undergone several seismic changes— most in just recent years—including a cross-country move and rebranding. The line’s influence and availability may be larger than ever, yet its initial core values remain tried and true. ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: What was the impetus for the name change from Clay McLaurin Studio to McLaurin & Piercy? TODD PIERCY: We purchased LA Mills in 2019. After a few months of living in Los Angeles, COVID-19 was a reality. Many businesses were forced to halt operation due to the pandemic, and we had to make the tough decision to furlough many employees to save the mill.
CLAY MCLAURIN: The quiet that we found ourselves in gave us time to think about the future and what we wanted to gain from the change we were about to face. We both sat around the studio table and began to formulate our ideas. Eventually, we concluded we needed to rebrand the existing business, Clay McLaurin Studio, to McLaurin & Piercy to include both of our names with the added tagline, American Weavers. We work equally hard to make this dream succeed, and we have a mission to celebrate and bring American craftsmanship and manufacturing to the fore. AH&L: How did you come about buying a mill and moving to L.A.? CM: I was hired by the previous owner of LA Mills at another mill in the Northeast in 2004 after finishing my MFA in textile design at The Rhode Island School of Design. Soon after I accepted the design position, the previous owner 13

purchased LA Mills. I stayed on as a senior designer at the mill in the Northeast. We kept in touch over the years and shortly after we began Clay McLaurin Studio, we worked with LA Mills to develop an indoor/ outdoor collection. Todd was visiting Los Angeles with his previous job working with Michael Smith. After lots of dinners and conversations, the previous owners asked us if we would be interested in purchasing the mill as they wanted to retire. Of course, we said yes. AH&L: You’ve long been known for beautiful and unique printed fabrics, and the new wovens are spectacular. How many new introductions did you release when you relaunched as McLaurin & Piercy, and how do you describe the new offerings? TP: When we launched McLaurin & Piercy, we introduced 25 new patterns totaling 100 new SKUs. This was a two-year process of designing and weaving the collection. We
hope the new offerings reflect the story of us, hardworking and American. The idea is to celebrate the spirit of American craftsmanship and manufacturing. We wanted the new fabrics to allude to this spirit through unique texture and material combinations. At the mill, we can twist boucles and spin unique novelty yarns. It was important for us to showcase these qualities as this is what makes our fabrics stand apart. Classic stripes and patterns, including a large-scale medallion and plaid, complement many of the textures. AH&L: Will you continue to develop new printed fabrics or are wovens now the focus? Or both? CM: Both. We are currently developing a collection that will launch in early spring 2023. This will comprise of several prints, an embroidery and of course more wovens. AH&L: How do you go about editing and refining colorways?
CM: It is one of the toughest parts of the job. For one pattern we could easily start with 60 to 80 colorways and have to cull to three to six. TP: At the genesis of the business, it was important to think in terms of bestsellers like neutrals, blues, etc. As the business has grown, we’ve added more interesting colors, including our new tawny and berry, as the foundation was already built. AH&L: It’s amazing that you’re doing all of this from downtown Los Angeles—and most of the cottons, linens and wools are sourced in the U.S. How important is it to both of you to use American-made goods? TP: Very important. A primary focus for rebranding was to celebrate American manufacturing and domestic suppliers. “How textiles are made matters” is central in our everyday conversations. By sourcing domestically, we’re not only supporting local suppliers, but reducing our carbon footprint. 15

AH&L: And although your textiles are American made, influences for designs come from around the world and your travels, right? CM: Yes. Although we are focusing on American craftsmanship and production in the U.S., our inspiration comes from our personal quest of discovery and exploration. We are naturally curious about the world around us and are not afraid of a good adventure. We want our patterns to portray a sense of history and place whether that be a place we have visited or a historical document we picked up along the way. We hope our wovens speak to our American heritage and the innocence of youth. AH&L: Can you talk a little about the art of craft and craftsmanship in your work? TP: Simplicity, beauty, quality and tradition are words that describe craft to us. Weaving is a very traditional craft that has been around for centuries, and though we are weaving on 20th-century looms, the basic concept and technique is the same today. It’s important for us to keep these traditions alive by shining a spotlight on how things are made and what they are made from. We believe in the art of making; from concept to completion, what we do is truly an art and not a computer doing all the work. Our team has years of training; therefore we weave with thought and integrity. AH&L: Do you still maintain ties to Georgia and Atlanta? TP: We visit often to see family and friends as well as to see our wonderful showroom where we are represented, Ainsworth-Noah. AH&L: What’s next? Anything new this fall? CM: We have a wallpaper collection launching in September. This will comprise of seven new patterns and 19 total SKUs. Getaway spot LAS CATALINAS (lascatalinascr.com) has launched its next neighborhood on the heels of a major award for its car-free design. The walkable seaside community in Costa Rica by developer CHARLES BREWER, architect DOUGLAS DUANY and landscape architecture firm TSW—all Atlantabased—won a 2022 Congress for New Urbanism Charter Award for outstanding architectural, landscape and urban design and planning. Las Catalinas has 142 completed homes (as of May) in its 21-acre Beach Town neighborhood, plus hotels and vacation rentals, a beach club, eight restaurants, and various shops, office spaces and well-being providers. “It’s a huge honor and a big affirmation that what we’re doing is the right thing,” says SARA BEGA, senior town architect. “It gives us a lot of energy for the launch of a new neighborhood.” The new 60-acre El Prado neighborhood will have about 500 residences ranging from studios to
flats in multifamily dwellings, to predesigned and custom single-family homes. Prices range from $90,000 for single-family lots to several million for pre-construction homes. Sidewalks and paths will connect the homes to Main Street with shops and cafes and a central park with a pool, playing fields and tennis courts. Stair streets will divide steep typography in sections such as Lantana, which will have 30 residences with Pacific Ocean views on the Guanacaste coast. Las Catalinas’ intention to be experienced on foot allows people to appreciate the granular details, Bega says. For example, many owners customize the shapes, sizes and colors of their front doors as a “gift to that street,” she says. “When you are walking, you are at a speed and at a proximity where a beautiful front door is something that’s actually a part of your experience, as opposed to a blur as you rush by.”

Event venues at the home of the 2021 World Series champion Atlanta Braves have expanded with two high-style spaces in a new 420-foot tower in The Battery Atlanta. THE ELEVATION ROOM and THE HORIZON BALLROOM are in TK Elevator’s Innovation and Qualification Center, which is Cobb County’s tallest building. The Elevation Room, which holds up to 175 guests, spans the 26th and 27th floors with views 26
of Truist Park, Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead and landmarks such as Kennesaw Mountain. “You can see all of those individual skylines, but because Atlanta has done such a great job of preserving the tree canopy, that’s really the first thing that everybody notices, just how green and beautiful it is,” says DAWN TRUEMPER, senior director of event sales for the Braves. The 5,720-square-foot Horizon Ballroom on the fourth floor holds up to 400 guests and offers floor-to-ceiling windows and modern design with a palette of charcoal, light gray and ivory. The spaces can be used for corporate events, banquets and weddings, as well as private receptions and dinners before Braves games. The spaces, along with the stadium’s newly renovated Delta SKY360° Club, are among 16 event venues at Truist Park.

Naomi Von Habersham ISN’T IT AMAZING HOW SOMETHING as simple as a scented candle can transport a person to a different time or place? That’s what happens to me anyway when I burn a particular floral-scented candle in my home. As I inhale wafts of fragrant rose, I feel that I’m thousands of miles away in the Parc de Bagatelle in Paris. That is, until I’m rudely interrupted by my Amazon Alexa telling me that it’s time to replace the milk in my smart refrigerator. Well, at least I was able to escape the daily monotony for a few brief minutes. In fact, it’s not just scent that helps me to “get away” from Atlanta without actually getting away at all. Wallpaper also does the trick. I have one room in my home that I papered in a trellis print. On a sunny day, sitting in that room surrounded by faux trellis and wicker furniture, I can pretend that I’m lazing the day away on a Palm Beach terrace, especially when I turn on the ceiling fan to create a little breeze. The same thing sometimes happens in my floral-patterned dressing room, which is papered in sprays of fuchsia. (For some inexplicable reason, this classic English wallpaper has been discontinued, but that’s a gripe for another day.) Occasionally, my floral-strewn walls remind me of being in an English garden, while at other times, I feel like I’m somewhere tropical, especially when it’s 90 degrees outside. And might I suggest that if you’re pining for a daily getaway to the French countryside, you should lavish a room in toile wallpaper and coordinating fabric? It’s uncanny how toile can quickly make you feel like you’ve escaped to the country. Of course, pretending that you’re elsewhere pales in comparison to the real thing. Considering the summer weather that we’ve been enduring these past few months, I would much prefer to be relaxing in an actual English garden rather than sitting in my dressing room and staring at its wallpaper. But for those times in between trips, transportive decorations can be almost as enjoyable.

With executive chef Christophe Le Métayer and director of operations for Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Christopher Guidice at the helm, Brassica provides a Southern twist on traditional French cuisine. “Brassica weaves together brasserie-style French cooking with regionally sourced ingredients, drawing culinary inspiration from Georgia and the American South,” says Guidice. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Brassica is the perfect blend of homecookin’ flair and classic French fare. “Having lived in Atlanta for over 20 years, I’m happy to showcase Southern cuisine without forgetting my French heritage,” says Le Métayer. “We’re bringing together the familiar with unexpected components to present a very unique dining experience to our guests.” Separated into three distinct spaces, Peacock Alley, Brassica and Solarium, the restaurant offers several unique atmospheres under one brand. ABOUT THE SHOWHOUSE The Cashiers Designer Showhouse will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a classic mountain retreat designed and built by Dillard-Jones. The house is created with the modern family in mind with open spaces to entertain. The home is located in Fieldstone, the newest neighborhood of the prestigious High Hampton. It features four bedrooms, four-and-a-half baths, and work-play areas including a great room, office, solarium and open loft with a fireplace. It’s the perfect mountain getaway for multi-generational families. 3

For over 20 years, the people, history and stunning landscapes of the Cashiers Valley have held a very special place in my heart. This year, I’m honored to celebrate and give back to this one-of-a-kind community as cochair of the 25th annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse. Nestled in the new neighborhood of Fieldstone at High Hampton, this year’s Dillard-Jones-designed home draws on the deep design roots of the Southeast, while also representing the exciting future of the area. It is tradition reimagined. Most of all, I’m proud to give back to the Cashiers Historical Society, which provides so much value to the people of the plateau through its educational programs, preservation efforts and seasonal activities. Finally, I’m deeply grateful to our tireless team of volunteers. I hope you enjoy this year’s special Showhouse.
I am excited and honored to be this year’s co-chair for the 25th annual Showhouse, benefiting Cashiers Historical Society. Cashiers is truly my home away from home. I have spent endless summers here creating memories with family and friends and enjoying mountain life. One of the first things that comes to mind when I think of mountain life is “Do we have a new puzzle?” Who doesn’t love a puzzle! Walking by a puzzle table is enticing to many, whether they put in one piece or sit for an hour and add many. Starting with the border as its foundation, in time we begin to see the big picture and some details that had been unnoticed. Eventually, through patience and perseverance, voila, the puzzle is done! I think of this year’s Showhouse as our Cashiers puzzle as we all come together to assemble it. A masterpiece to be admired. I hope you enjoy this year’s beautiful Showhouse—each and every piece!

It’s located in Fieldstone, one of High Hampton’s new neighborhoods. We have enlisted 15 designers who will pique your imagination with their decors. What’s more, we will have 16 vendors who will be housed inside at the Village Green where you can park, shop and take the shuttle to the Showhouse. It’s going to be the best Showhouse ever and we look forward to seeing you there.

We recently spent so much time isolated in our homes that it forced us to examine ourselves and how we live our lives. Our natural response is to find comfort, which so many of us find in traditions. She has won a number of awards and her work has been accepted in many national juried shows. Her subjects come from a real love of the outdoors and are focused on the western North Carolina mountains in the summer, and Charleston, SC, the rest of the year. Carroll studied with a number of teachers since she began painting in 1967. Among her successes are top awards in the Rocky Mountain National Water Media Competition, the National Watercolor Society, and the Southern Watercolor Society. Carroll says, “Painting is a mental exercise and never loses its challenge and joy.”

Her fascination with indigenous cultures led her to travel the world collecting bits and pieces of tribal art. Pollock’s use of this ancient method of painting started as a fascination with the technique and quickly became a tool in which she could infuse antique book pages, dried botanicals and fine pieces of cloth into her art.

She and her husband (Tom Fazio, renowned golf course architect) founded the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County in 1993. Since then, all of the proceeds from her work go to that club. ENAMORED BY THE IDEAL summer weather and recreational activities in Cashiers, North Carolina, an Atlanta couple asked architect Ryan Duffey to design a retreat for themselves and future generations. Constructed with time-tested materials such as granite, slate and copper, the English Manor-style home he created looks as if it might have stood there for decades. “[The materials] have a classic look and feel, and they will weather well,” he says. Low, curved stone walls define the verdant courtyard, creating a welcoming first impression. Surrounded by a wall of glass, the front door opens to a long loggia with bluestone flooring that connects the two sides of the home. An arch separates the loggia from the great room,
mirroring the glass doors that sit opposite of it. Simply slide those doors into the wall, and the space is completely open to the exterior, where a flagstone patio overlooks a golf course and the rolling mountains in the distance. “Nothing is in your way,” says Duffey. Interior designer Francie Hargrove collaborated closely with Duffey on the interior finishes, weighing in on the cabinetry design throughout and the decision to slather the stone fireplaces with a chalky coating that complements the Venetian plaster walls. “What made this project so outstanding and unusual is the marriage of the stone with soft materials,” she says, pointing to the barrel ceilings and plush furnishings.

Linen sheers with a hint of cashmere, for example, soften the metal windows in the loggia, which she furnished with dining chairs slipcovered in vegan leather and a pair of textural hair-on-hide benches—a color and material palette that flows throughout the interior. “The repetition of materials and textures makes the house feel so good,” says Hargrove. Indeed, the light oak cabinetry in the open kitchen coordinates with the three-quarter-high wall paneling in the living area, where a pair of plush linen velvet sofas face each other in front of the fireplace. Adding a subtle texture that elevates the design, the hair-on-hide fabric can also be found throughout, showing up on the ottomans in the covered porch and on furnishings in the guest bedrooms.
A departure from the neutral palette in the main living areas, lilac draperies distinguish the primary bedroom suite—a nod to the wife’s favorite color. W WHEN ASKED TO DESCRIBE her ideal clients, the homeowners of this Alys Beach getaway are quick to come to mind for interior designer Melanie Turner. “The relationship we have with this couple is what designers wish for,” she says. This project marks their fifth time working together, but most importantly, Turner notes, “Each time, they give us the space to experiment and try new things.” For her part, Turner—who’s mastered juxtaposing styles from a range of eras as well as risk-taking aesthetics—has given each of their homes a distinct personality, while always staying true to the couple’s fresh and youthful style. So after purchasing their latest property in Alys Beach, a threestory home located adjacent to the community’s prized Gulf Green, the couple looked to Turner once again.

Inspired by their response to vintage art (many of the pieces making it into the home’s final design), Turner and her team proposed a “California boho beach house” vibe. Defined by a profusion of soft layers, fun colors and midcentury flair, the aesthetic also allowed them to highlight Moroccan flourishes from the home’s previous iteration (which was featured in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles in 2017). More than 1,000 sandblasted white oak pieces forming a motif on the ceiling were left intact over the living room, which Turner anchored with a striking coral-and-turquoise painting. A lowprofile sectional sits equally pretty just below, while vintage accents—from a rattan chair to a turtle shell sconce—further play up the home’s eclectic charm. Leaning into the couple’s desire for “easy living” at the beach, a new dining area was

created in the living room by absorbing square footage from a portion of the balcony. Now the kitchen, living and dining spaces flow freely, allowing the family of five to always be within sight. The former formal dining room was converted into a TV lounge. Decorated in plush layers of marigold tones, it offers the couple and their young children a cozy spot to gather together after a
day of enjoying the crystal clear ocean water just steps from their home. Warm splashes of color throughout the beach house were an intentional choice by Turner, effectively giving each room its own identity. For example, the primary bedroom’s rattan motorcycle that suspends from the ceiling adds eclectic flair, while
apricot-colored walls in the guest bedroom are a whimsical touch. “Everyone wants a beach house to be calm, which we agree is important, but oftentimes the houses become vanilla,” says Turner. “Luckily, these clients always give us the green light to push design boundaries.” See Resources, Back of Book. 85

W
WHO BETTER TO DECORATE YOUR HOME than a best friend who is also an incredibly talented designer? John Oetgen has orchestrated interiors for clients galore, but for the owner of this stucco beauty on a lagoon in Northeast Florida, it was an exercise in utter trust. “She is a dear, dear friend,” says Oetgen. Oetgen and the homeowner became close while neighbors in Ansley Park, which grew into antiques-gathering getaways in France and working together to outfit homes in Atlanta, North Carolina and Florida. After grieving the loss of her beloved husband, the homeowner asked Oetgen to give her Florida abode a joyful update. Oetgen knew the talented cook, adept hostess and ardent traveler would embrace a spruce-up that celebrated her passions and love of sharing them with family and friends, and their close relationship meant he could follow his instincts when it came to capturing her style. “I know how she dresses, I know how she entertains and she’s a great cook,” says Oetgen. “She studied under Simone Beck in France; she’s been all over the world. She’s a great entertainer. She’s a great personality. She’s fun as can be.” What evolved is a Florida-meets-French aesthetic that honors the home’s coastal station and the owner’s affinity for French cooking, antiques and general joie de vivre. Whimsy abounds in color, pattern and her impressive collections.

“Lattice just feels like the beach to me,” says Oetgen of the hood and cabinet accent in the kitchen. Treasured finds are abundant, from a collection of antique confit pots to Picasso platters that adorn the open shelving.
“Everything I see in her home, I think of a memory,” says Oetgen of the treasured antiques and art they’ve hunted on their travels. In the kitchen, a wall of framed menus hangs above the French bistro set. “They are from restaurants where she studied under chefs around the world,” says Oetgen. “They drum up a lot of memories about being in France over the years and going to that restaurant or another.” The intimate library honors the homeowner’s husband, with his collection of landscapes nestled among floor-to-ceiling paneling. A menagerie of tropical birds, seahorses and
shells creates a soaring botanical focal point in the living room, where multiple vividly hued seating configurations coalesce. “She’s not afraid of color,” says Oetgen. “And we never worry about matching. I have my favorite colors for her, and whenever we work together I pull that mental file out.” The home’s tropical aura may be most palpable in the foyer. “I had an extra hour before a flight,” recalls Oetgen, “so I decided to paint all those palm trees on the wall. She said, ‘Ok I’ll fix you a drink, the ladder is in the garage.’” See Resources, Back of Book.

For over a hundred years and counting, fame and fortune has flocked to THE GREENBRIER SITUATED AMONG THE ALLEGHENY MOUNTAINS in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, is The Greenbrier—a worldrenowned resort complete with a compelling past. The story begins in 1778 when crowds started to arrive in the area in hopes the nearby spring water would cure illnesses. PAST PERFECT
Style Editor Clinton Smith is enchanted by antiquing in PARMA, ITALY Photography by GIORGIO SCHIRATO CROWDS FLOCK TO PARMA, ITALY, for its delectable cuisine, particularly for the area’s famous meats and cheeses—think Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano. But twice a year, visitors gather for Mercanteinfiera, a massive antiques show that is the oldest and largest in all of Europe. More than 1,000 exhibitors and dealers showcase their finds, and the most recent spring show that I attended in March (only the second one since the pandemic began) had more than 51,000 visitors. My trip to Italy was a bit of a circuitous one. I was originally supposed to attend the fair in March 2020, and my bags were literally packed when coronavirus shut down most of Europe and, of course, the show was canceled. Fast-forward two years later, and I can attest that it was well worth the wait, and Mercanteinfiera exceeded all of my expectations. The setup of the show is not too dissimilar to Atlanta’s own Scott Antique Markets, except that the convention halls are much, much larger, there are more of them and the merchandise comes from all across Europe.

I was most amazed by the sheer variety and amount of goods for sale, with some pieces in pristine, tip-top condition, while others will require restoration and refurbishment. During my two days shopping (I could have stayed longer!), I was guided by Toma Clark Haines (opposite, bottom left), whose company, The Antiques Diva & Co., leads year-round antique buying tours in eight countries in Europe and six in Asia. Not only does her company guide clients through fairs such as this one, but they customize trips and provide access to warehouses, antiques stores and other secret sources to shop for antiques off the beaten path. With all of that experience, Clark Haines herself is still allured by Mercanteinfiera. “I love the fact that there are truly pieces that have been pulled out of palazzos and villas,” says Clark Haines, who is based in Venice. “What I like about the fair is that I can go to museums in Venice or on the mainland and see furniture that, when I walk into Mercanteinfiera, the items that I’ve seen in these beautiful decorative museums are actually for sale at an accessible price point. That’s what probably first enchanted me about the fair.” I immediately had a similar passion for the show, and was often drawn to architectural antiques, such as stone mantels, and even wood panels that one could use to re-create an entire room or ceiling with vintage charm and patina. The best part of the fair? Knowing that there’s another one scheduled this year, where a million new discoveries await! Geometrics
have the ability to do so many things! For starters, a graphic wallpaper pattern of lines, circles, squares and other shapes can easily add architectural interest to a space where good bones are lacking. And in a room comprised of a sea of neutrals and solid fabrics, something as simple as a couple of throw pillows upholstered in a geometric print with a repetitive pattern can add an immediate punch to perk up a room.
