I’m embarrassed to admit that my kitchen saw little of me during recent months, but my beginningof-year motivation saves the day and I’m ready to breakup with my fast-fix (ahem, takeout) dinners. THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL about the endless possibilities that come with a new-build home. Case in point is the showstopping kitchen in this newly constructed Buckhead house brought to life by Linda MacArthur Architect, Benecki Homes, Source and Karpaty Cabinets. When it came to the design, the team set out to craft a chic yet practical space tailor-made for the homeowners, a young family who loves homecooked meals just as much as they do a clean aesthetic. To keep clutter at bay, custom cabinetry by Karpaty Cabinets lines the walls, providing plenty of storage and cleverly concealing a hidden pantry. Pop-up outlets on the Calacatta Vagli marble countertops and hidden speakers in the ceiling further the seamless and connected effect. Perhaps the star of the show: an impressive triple barrel tiled ceiling, which was implemented to

complement the length of the room. Handmade Spanish ceramic tile on both the walls and ceiling ensconces the kitchen in a graceful sense of texture. “The handmade imperfections of the tile allow the light to glint and sparkle, adding a luxurious element to the space,” says Brittany Stafford of Source. Natural light was also an important design feature to include. “Benecki [Homes] believes in implementing light into a room from more than one direction for shadow reduction and overall aesthetics,” says Cydney Mitchell of Source. Oval windows were included not only on the ceiling, but also above the doorways leading into the adjacent living room, allowing light from the kitchen to filter throughout the main floor. “Source, Karpaty [Cabinets] and Benecki Homes have a long history of collaborating, and we thoroughly enjoy the artistic process—and the challenges that come with—of continually pushing the design boundaries,” says Stafford. “Each team not only brings an artistic vision with an emphasis on innovation, but also a strong commitment to quality and execution.”

FOR AN ATLANTA family who loves to cook and entertain, functionality and tranquility were vital when it came to renovating the kitchen in their new home. To execute these two themes, the homeowners tapped the talents of Harrison Design’s interior designer Betsy McBride and senior project manager Derek Hopkins, plus kitchen designer Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio and Paul Timoney of Timoney Construction who brought the team’s visions to life. To increase square footage and open up the kitchen to the adjoining breakfast/ keeping room, the team pushed back the oven wall to line up with the neighboring entertaining spaces. They also removed columns and stepped ceiling details to reduce visual clutter and add a sense of height. “It helped open up the space and make it feel more gracious,” says McBride. “Instead of feeling like two individual spaces next to each other, it feels like one large open space for gathering and entertaining.” Appliances and work areas were thoughtfully arranged with practicality and symmetry in mind. wall niches to eliminate countertop clutter, where stainless steel pullouts provide easy access to daily appliances—and conceal them when they’re not needed. “We tucked away some of the more hectic work zones—such as the working pantry with a sink and specialized kimchi refrigerator—into the back-of-house area,” says McBride, who cultivated calm with a soft, organic color palette and layers of texture. Naica quartzite, for instance, was used on both the countertops and backsplash in contrasting finishes (polished and leathered, respectively) to create subtle dimension. Likewise, stained cherry wood cabinetry is softened by a bleaching and antiquing process. On the walls, three different sizes of handmade and hand-finished porcelain tile add dimension, as does a wire mesh on the cabinetry doors, which ties into the mix of polished nickel and dark bronze hardware. “The client and I had already worked on a color palette for the whole house since we started by painting and furnishing some other rooms,” explains McBride. “When we met with Matthew [Quinn], he already had a similar color scheme in mind, so the overall design came together naturally and smoothly.”

LOOKING TO TRANSFORM their French Country-style kitchen into something more clean, open and connected, a pair of Atlanta homeowners enlisted an assemblage of talents to achieve their dream design: architect Rodolfo Castro of Castro Design Studio, kitchen designer Jane Hollman of Studio Entourage, interior designer Brian Watford of Brian Watford Interiors and builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes. As the first order of business, Castro rearranged the overall layout, knocking down walls and positioning the kitchen to allow for higher ceilings and a more open feel. From there, the team created a dramatic focal point with steel window composition surrounding a pewter hood and Statuario Corchia marble backsplash. “We wanted to have the focal point on that range wall be super special,” says Hollman, who implemented functional details throughout.

Because the kitchen’s footprint was long and narrow, the back portion of the kitchen island was dropped and offset to one side, allowing for plenty of seating without impeding on the walkspace by the refrigerator. “That was an important move that played well for function as well as looks,” notes Hollman. For a clean and clutter-free aesthetic, rift-oak cabinetry by Marion & Bond Millwork conceals the refrigerator, walk-in scullery and freezer, along with small appliances such as a toaster and coffee maker. Throughout the rest of the kitchen, lighter cabinetry—painted to match the walls—features a tapered profile and provides a sophisticated sense of contrast. “It took a tremendous amount of collaboration to make this design a reality due to the complexity and intricacy of the details that needed to be executed,” says Hollman. “We truly benefited from a team of talented and seasoned professionals working together to make it all come together as planned.”

WHEN A PAIR OF homeowners fell in love with this Buckhead home’s sprawling, wooded landscape—and the way the house was situated perfectly to enjoy the property’s jaw-dropping sunset views—they decided to renovate rather than rebuild. Among these renovations was a complete overhaul of the kitchen, which architectural designer Lorraine Enwright of Intuitive Dwellings by Enwright Design Collaborative Inc. moved from the front of the home to the west-facing rear. This adjustment allowed the space to become open to the family room and afforded views of the property’s pool, wooded backyard and stunning sunsets. For an entertaining-friendly element that also took advantage of the scenic setting, Enwright implemented an L-shape island (a request from the homeowners) that offered bar seating facing the pool and “would double as an hors d’oeuvre buffet for the dining room,” says the designer. On the opposite side, a custom breakfast table and built-in bench provide plenty of space for gathering while offering visibility of the pool and family room.

To play off the home’s surroundings, Enwright anchored the kitchen with nature-inspired elements, including horn hardware and a trough planter on the island—a nod to the wife’s love of flowers and a “zone differentiation” between the island and the table. Enwright and the client also selected a Blue Roma marble for the backsplash and counters, which “had the cooling tones of water—like the pool—and organic branch-like veining that spoke to the natural character of their wooded lot,” she says. Adding a sense of timelessness is a mix of painted and French oak cabinetry, fabricated by Bell Cabinetry & Design. Beveled plaster surrounds built by Chris Donnelly of Brookside Custom Homes “give both timeless and modern character to the design.” Says Enwright on her process: “Our approach with every client—whether working architecturally or with the interior design—is to find the elements and experiences that speak to their hearts and create a home that feels right to them on multiple levels.”

THERE’S A DELICATE BALANCE when trying to create spaces with contemporary elements while retaining warmth and soul. If the needle moves too far in one direction, the room can feel cold or stark. But at the most recent Luxury Living Show at Phipps Plaza, Acworth-based Morgan Creek Cabinetry created a stylish kitchen that artfully melded classic characteristics with a pareddown approach in keeping with today’s less-is-more lifestyles. “Our inspiration for the design was to be clean, simple and straightforward,” says Ryan DeCesaro, owner and longtime designer at Morgan Creek Cabinetry. “We took more traditional elements and brought them into modern times.” A straightforward approach didn’t mean sacrificing style; in fact, myriad design details are interspersed throughout the space. “We started with the island, which creates a striking impression,” says DeCesaro of one of the room’s key focal points. A history of furniture-making is part of Morgan Creek’s 35-plusyear history, and the English brown oak base is a nod to those time-honored traditions. With a clear varnish, the finish mimics wood in its raw state. The repetition of deep undercounter drawers and custom hardware adds a graphic sensibility. The drawers also allow for more storage, which DeCesaro says clients are requesting. Brass accents appear again on upper and lower cabinets that are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Black Pepper, as well as on the kitchen faucet. The contrast between the wood and painted finishes creates a striking, eye-catching combination that’s decidedly 21st century. “There’s not one thing that overpowers the other,” says DeCesaro of the room’s details. “They all complement each other.” 53

FOR THE VANITY AND STORAGE units of the bathroom, designed by Emily McMillan of Bell Cabinetry & Design, plain sawn white oak was treated with a custom natural wood finish to elevate the sleek lines of the modern design. Placed on a base with legs, the custom vanity takes on the appearance of a furniture console and is topped with a Unique Calacatta countertop by Compac. A mix of frameless and inset cabinetry styles add further interest. “I wanted to add detail and molding to push the limits of modern style,” says McMillan. The freestanding Grant tub from Hydro Systems’ Metro Collection features soft curves and graceful lines. Behind it, large format porcelain slabs by the Italian manufacturer Florim provide a dynamic backdrop. “It really coordinated well with the finish of the wood,” says McMillan. And for a bit of glamour, brass faucets and sconces add just the right amount of sparkle. “Our hope was that this would serve as an example of how working in brass finishes can elevate the overall look,” says McMillan. Indeed, in this space they imbue an understated elegance, just like the bath itself.

FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN and VALERIE GARRETT INTERIORS created a trio of stylish spaces inspired by the great outdoors

EVOKING THE OUTDOORS, landscape architect Lucinda Bray of Floralis created a series of areas for dining and lounging, as well as a nook with an inviting hearth from Hartstone. Verdant and abundant plantings in various styles of containers helped define the spaces and bring the outdoors into the sunlit plaza. Valerie Garrett of Valerie Garrett Interiors selected the furnishings, which feel collected over time. “We were trying to showcase a lot of different materials and how they blend together,” says Bray. “And the furniture very much is a reflection of that as well. It’s this mix of super clean lines with some rustic warmth.” Grounding the different areas is an artificial turf from European Company that Bray loves for its durability and flexibility to work in any number of areas. “It has really become a versatile base to build your outdoor spaces off of,” she adds.

furnishings for those spaces.” More than 50 brands, including Agio, Plank & Hide and Summerset Casual, will be available at the January market, and more than 35 selected brands, such as Barlow Tyrie, Gensun and Summer Classics, will be open year-round. ADAC, is also experiencing continued expansions, including Pierre Frey’s first showroom in the Southeast, Wareco’s and Scalamandré’s new showrooms, an expanded space for Paul+, Simply Wired Pro’s showroom with a model home, HA Modern’s fully built outdoor area and designer Meredith McBrearty’s new office coming this year. “As design continues to evolve, we at ADAC need to continue to evolve with our offerings, events, showrooms and their lines,” says KATIE MINER, ADAC general manager. “We are also finding that experiential shopping is so important right now. Designers and guests are looking for that sensory experience of seeing and touching when they come to shop.”

The NATIONAL KITCHEN & BATH ASSOCIATION (NKBA) projects the market is cooling with decelerated growth expected in 2023, while designers report smaller delays and backlogs for products and inventory than the past couple of years. Spending on residential kitchen and bath projects was expected to grow in 2022 to $189 billion, up 16% from 2021. Data from the organization’s quarterly kitchen and bath market index indicates flat or declining revenue growth in 2023, particularly in retail sales. “From what I’ve experienced and what I’ve heard, the phone calls seem to be slowing down, but everybody is still extremely busy,” says CAILIN M. THELEN, owner of THELEN DESIGNS and president of the NKBA’s Georgia chapter. There is understandable concern around inflation and interest rates, says BILL DARCY, the NKBA’s chief executive officer, noting that there’s a “cautious confidence” in the industry for 2023. Thelen adds: “It’s going to take people getting beyond the election and the holidays. I’m hoping that we have an upturn in the second quarter of the year.”

The Buckhead estate of the late Charlie Loudermilk hit the market in late 2022. William T. Baker designed the property at the corner of Davis and Northside drives with substantial influence from Monticello. Naomi Von Habersham SOME SAY THAT COOKING FOR one person can be trickier than cooking for a crowd, and as a single person, I don’t disagree. Let’s say I cook a casserole for myself. Unless I cut the recipe in half, I’m committed to eating leftovers every night of the week, and frankly, by the third night, I’m thoroughly sick of eating tuna casserole. Then there is the dilemma of groceries. If I buy a loaf of bread, there is no way I can get to the end of the loaf without it going stale. But, if I refrigerate it to keep it fresh, it changes the texture of the bread. And is there anything sadder looking than one measly pork chop cooking all alone in a big frying pan? I’m sure that there are plenty of single people out there who have figured out how to cook easily and deliciously for one person, but for me, it’s been a struggle. However, things are starting to look up. I’m probably late to the game, but I’ve only recently discovered that there is a whole category of small cooking appliances that are equipped to handle individual servings, making meal preparation for one if not pleasurable, then at least convenient. Have you tried one of those mini electric griddles yet? I bought mine thinking I would use it to fry an egg or a sausage patty for breakfast, but I’m now so hooked on using it that I cook hamburger patties, quesadillas and crab cakes on the thing. And I’m obsessed with my mini waffle maker, which I use for both breakfast and dinner. (Let me tell you, savory waffles for supper are a revelation.) You can buy mini grills and panini presses, and if you like baked goods but don’t want the guilt that comes with large portions, you can even indulge in tiny Bundt pans or doughnut makers. And you know what makes these appliances even more appealing? They’re so small that you can store them in drawers. Actually, forget about what I said earlier. Cooking for one might actually be fun!

THIS PAST FALL, MIDTOWN’S BRAND-NEW lodging locale the Kimpton Shane Hotel by Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants made its debut to Atlanta’s hospitality scene. Alongside art-inspired guest rooms, the hotel also offers a culinary retreat through their restaurant Hartley Kitchen and Cocktails and mezzanine cocktail lounge, Aveline. “I want our guests to feel at home,” says executive chef Mark Alba. “Courteous and gracious hospitality is a huge focus at Kimpton Hotels—from restaurants and bars to all the other departments.” Alba describes the dishes at Hartley as a nod to traditional Southern cuisine with modern enhancements and presentations. “The use of regional, organic and sustainable ingredients makes positive impacts on the plate with powerful flavors,” says Alba. Starting with breakfast, guests will take pleasure in an array of options from fresh baked buttermilk biscuits to the classic and hearty Hartley breakfast—complete with two farm eggs any style, bacon or sausage, toast, and a choice of grits, breakfast potatoes or fruit. For dinner, think palatable menu items like Sweet Tea Brined & Roasted Chicken, Cornmeal Fried Catfish or Sweet Potato Agnolotti. “Breads and pastries that are baked daily, handmade pastas, desserts that are made in-house, fresh out-of-the-ocean seafood, dry-aged and brined meats, gently prepared vegetables—there is so much care that goes into each ingredient on the plate,” says Alba on his curated breakfast, brunch and dinner menus. Our guests feel welcomed and cared for at each locale, and our service in both spaces is attentive yet unpretentious.” With support from Kimpton’s design team, Studio 11 Design transformed Hartley and Aveline into two distinct areas that effortlessly complement each other. Curvaceous walls and ceiling details add interest to the sophisticated design, and leather chairs and booths act as perfect resting places to enjoy unique dishes and drinks amid good company. Just outside of Aveline, a chic patio lures guests to mingle around the firepits on chilly Atlanta evenings. Says Alba as a final note, “Great food takes respect, time and dedication. As a counterbalance to the soaring ceilings and limestone walls in the living room, designer Lorraine Enwright incorporated a pair of curvaceous sofas that surround a quartet of round cocktail tables. “[The homeowner] said it feels like a warm hug,” says Enwright. “We design in a way that speaks to people’s hearts.” Indeed, the designer paired two horse head-shaped concrete pedestals the homeowner had purchased in Mexico with a live-edge oak top to create a desk. On the opposite side of the room, she suspended an oil painting by chains from the steel drapery rod. “We created vignettes that would bring interest into the space,” says Enwright. Involved from the beginning, the homeowner is overjoyed with the result, purchasing nearly every stitch of furniture and many of the accessories, which include custom artwork, crystal table lamps and throw pillows with a bark pattern that brings the outside in. “The space has such a warm feeling,” says Enwright. “It’s really a destination spot.” 71

Contemporary furnishings and finishes elevate the stone walls and solid wood beams in the open kitchen and dining area by Patrick and Meghan Sharp, who also served as the showhouse’s interior specifications designers. Embracing the rustic envelope, the designers clad a prominent interior wall with the material, which surrounds a quartzite-lined niche housing the range. “It feels like it has been there for centuries and adds so much gravitas,” says Patrick. On the perimeter walls and in the pantry, gray wood-toned cabinetry with a Shaker-style door by Bell Cabinetry & Design provides ample storage in stylish fashion. In the same spirit, the brass shelves flanking a tall bank of windows display vintage china, which also adorn the plaster wall high above the range niche. Leaning in a more modern direction, the fluted island’s rounded edges play off the curves in the custom barrel-back dining chairs around the table, which has an iron base and a wooden top with a live edge. “We added a little glamour,” Patrick explains. “We took the farmhouse idea to a new, more luxurious place.”

Leaning into the lower ceilings in the study, interior designer Kristan Moore rendered the walls and ceiling in a palette of warm neutral hues. “It’s sexy, dark and moody,” she says. Texture plays a key role in establishing the welcoming milieu. A hide rug, for example, anchors the custom chenille-covered sectional sofa in the den. And dark linen draperies line the wall behind it, creating a soft backdrop for a large-scale painting she commissioned for the space. “The textures added layers of interest,” she says, pointing to the fur-like fabric covering the ottomans. As do the mix of antiques and contemporary pieces. Modern brass sconces flank an antique French mirror over the fireplace, playing off the limestone walls. Vintage and antique accessories likewise juxtapose contemporary pieces in the library, where a gallery wall consisting of a mix of artwork from various eras creates a powerful focal point. “It’s welcoming and very cozy,” says Moore, “a space you don’t want to leave.”

PRIMARY BEDROOM HOPE AUSTIN, HOPE AUSTIN INTERIORS Seeking to create a serene retreat for the future homeowners, interior designer Hope Austin covered the primary bedroom’s walls with a neutral-tinted plaster enlivened by a medley of artwork, beautiful textiles and tailored upscale furnishings. An oversize contemporary brass and quartz crystal chandelier draws attention to the soaring ceilings. And flanked by a pair of painted end tables with a diamond motif, a four-poster canopy bed upholstered in a textural mohair grounds the space. “The layers of texture add interest,” says Austin. “There’s nothing loud about the space because I wanted that bed to shine.” Indeed, the few patterns are quiet yet impactful. A nod to the natural surroundings, for example, the drapery sports a cascading willow tree motif in a blue hue that perfectly complements the area rug, throw pillows and pleated lampshades. “I’m really happy with the softness of the space,” says Austin. “It’s calming and peaceful.” 77

Designer Ashley Miller looked to nature when designing the primary bedroom’s closets and en suite bathroom. A subtle reference to clouds, for instance, a chandelier made of handblown glass spheres floats in front of the window over the concrete tub, which sits in a niche defined by a bed of stones and a textural wall tile. Coordinating with the tactile grasscloth wallcovering in the closet, dark blue-green draperies call attention to the space’s high ceilings. “The fabric’s smoother texture contrasts the roughness of the stone,” she says. Such juxtapositions can be found throughout the space. Next to the tub, the designer paired a contemporary concrete side table with a dark vintage African stool. And the vanity is decorated with an eclectic grouping of pieces that includes a glass box containing a collection of black seashells, a vintage mirror with a goldish-silver patinated frame and a modern geometric black table lamp. “The contrast makes it interesting,” says Miller, describing the space as relaxing and meditative. “I love how design can transport you.”

A playful juxtaposition to the existing checkerboard marble flooring, a handpainted floral wallcovering elevates the walls and ceiling in the mudroom and laundry room by interior designer Courtney Shearer. “It gives the room a hug and adds some whimsy and pizzazz,” she says. Playing off the linen wallcovering in both color and form, a chartreuse flowershaped metal chandelier beautifully illuminates the laundry area, which is outfitted with blue cabinetry accented with unlacquered brass hardware with an equine theme—a subtle nod to the new homeowner’s love of horses. Occupying a niche in the mudroom, a bench covered in a complementary smaller-scale floral pattern with leather strapping creates a spot to get cozy with a book while the laundry dries. “It feels like a happy, inviting space where people will actually want to spend time,” says Shearer. “It’s important to make these utilitarian spaces fun.”

READING ROOM ANGELA MEANS & DANIELLE CARNEY, MEANS CARNEY INTERIORS When they selected the bold blue wallcovering with handpainted bees for the reading room, Angela Means and Danielle Carney weren’t aware that the new homeowner’s mother went by Bee Bee—a moment of serendipity that packs a visual punch. “[The wallcovering] is cozy, but it still has color and personality,” says Means. A complementary tweed-like wallcovering and draperies with a fern motif define the daybed area. The same fern fabric also covers a window valance behind a contemporary Parsons-style wooden desk, which is paired with a custom desk chair by a Brazilian furniture designer. Rounding out the space are artworks, colorful patterned pillows, antique foo dog lamps and several of Bee Bee’s possessions, including her high school cheerleading uniform and the golden bee pins she wore on her sweater. “This space unexpectedly evolved to tell a story,” says Means. “It has depth and soul.”

Envisioning a more sophisticated milieu than the typical bunk room, interior designer Joy Williams selected a chic black and white color palette that flows into the en suite bathroom and closet. “Black and white is a classic color palette that brings a bit of modernism into spaces effortlessly,” she says. Framed in black lacquered moldings, a handpainted Gracie wallcovering with a butterfly motif defines an accent wall in the landing—a moment of color in the otherwise dualistic space. A reference to African architectural traditions, a custom credenza studded with black spheres provides a similar moment of drama in the bunkroom, where a dark grasscloth wallcovering plays off a black and white sofa and mismatched chairs around a fluted concrete pedestal table with a round quartzite top. Softening the palette, a brown and cream striped fabric covers the exterior of the bunks, which are outfitted with complementary draperies that allow them to be closed off. “It’s bright and airy, comfortable and relaxed,” says Williams. “A place to be inspired.”

Looking out the window of the guest suite during her first visit, interior designer Loren Taylor saw streaks of purple against a bright blue sky and realized straight away that those hues would beautifully complement the black and white envelope she envisioned for the space, which she designed with a teen in mind. Inspired by the rocky geography, an amethyst lamp in a soft shade of purple “feels dramatic and gives the room a sense of place,” says Taylor. “It’s a very special foundation.” Both purple and blue hues can be found in the biophilic abstract painting that Taylor hung above the iron four-poster bed, its white linens accented by patterned pillows in complementary blue shades that perfectly coordinate with the microsuede draperies. GUEST APARTMENT CHRISTOPHER RANKIN & BARBARA WILLIAMS, STOCK & TRADE DESIGN CO. When designing the bright and airy apartment, Christopher Rankin and Barbara Williams took their cues from the sense of casual elegance in the main house, selecting a neutral color palette punctuated by textiles and artwork that “adds a wow factor,” says Rankin. In the living area, a pair of large-scale abstract pieces in an earthy colorway create a beautiful focal point for a sofa chaise and a hide-covered armchair atop a textural wool rug. “Texture creates warmth and visual interest and makes the space more inviting,” says Rankin. Another abstract artwork pops against the charred wood siding on the covered porch, where a pair of slipcovered white chairs provide a protected outdoor space to take in the bucolic views. And a wall of framed butterflies likewise enlivens the white walls in the bright and airy bedroom. “A warm, inviting feeling emanates from the entire space,” says Rankin, describing it as “the perfect guest suite for visitors or a private retreat for family members.”

Enchanted by the hilltop property’s agrarian surroundings, architect Steve Dray conceptualized the 2022 Serenbe Showhouse as an old, stone-walled barn that has been added onto over the years. Built by 1023 Construction, the home’s white Texas limestone walls are accented by black shou sugi ban siding and cedar timber framing, lending it a sense of modernity that contrasts the age-old materials. “It’s a glamorous version of itself,” says Dray. Atop the metal catslide roof, a cupola with clerestory windows allows natural light to filter into the living room, which has stone walls and soaring ceilings detailed with weighty timber beams. Large metal windows frame pastoral views of the neighboring organic farm, blurring the line between inside and out. Just outside, a spacious rear patio overlooks the swimming pool—one of the many outdoor living zones. Linear pavers inset into the grass foster a decidedly contemporary look that juxtaposes the more naturalistic mix of native plants in front. Designed by landscape architect, Alec Michaelides of Land Plus, an intentional mix of native plants that include shrubs, grasses and wildflowers allow the newly constructed home to blend into the natural surroundings. PATIO, PORCH & POOLSIDE PATIO SHANE EVANS & DEENA LEVINE, ANSLEY INTERIORS Exemplifying the happy marriage of inside and out that characterizes the Serenbe Showhouse, Shane Evans and Deena Levine furnished the patio, porch and poolside patio with upscale pieces grouped in areas for living, dining and relaxing. “It feels like an extension of the interiors,” says Evans. Black outdoor rugs reference the home’s charred wood siding while teak elements speak to the cypress details. Petrified wood side tables, cocktail tables with teak-root tops and tall planters that resemble volcanic rock likewise reflect the natural landscaping. Adding a touch of whimsy, ceramic umbrellas by a local artist seem to float over the living and dining areas. They play off a series of wall sculptures by the same artist that pop against the charred siding on a covered porch with a custom swing. The result is a hit with the new homeowner, and the designers are equally pleased. “It’s very livable and feels like an extension of the interior,” says Evans. “Visitors really enjoyed it.” 91

Awestruck by the home’s beauty, interior designer Coley Cuttino took a minimalist approach to the design of the wide front porch. Playing off the exposed timbers, for example, a pair of teak swivel rockers enable folks to converse with neighbors or survey the beautiful landscape. “It’s such a front porch community that I just really wanted to make it comfortable for the people living there to be able to hang out and enjoy their neighbors,” says Cuttino. “The community is pretty utopian.” As evidenced by the branch-like ironwork surrounding the local stop signs, it’s also artistic, a fact that inspired Cuttino to design a custom iron swing with a complementary motif. “I wanted something that was sculptural but functional,” she says, noting that Gault Designs implemented it to perfection. Indeed, the branch-like swing was a big hit with visitors at the showhouse. “It’s gotten a lot of great feedback,” she says. “That makes me so happy.”

Lyall Penley was the recipient of the Serenbe Showhouse’s inaugural Decorative Arts Fellowship. An Atlanta native and the son of two professional artists, Penley has always had a passion for art and photography, having a skillful eye from an early age. After a trip to Wyoming in 2019, his passion for landscape and wildlife photography emerged. Before the showhouse opening, the young photographer spent a weeklong fellowship on Serenbe’s grounds and captured numerous photographs that were displayed at the 2022 Serenbe Designer Showhouse—including Bowie (pictured above). lyallpenley.com

On its exterior, a combination of traditional boardand-batten siding and stonework gives the house the look of a classic mountain getaway, while indoors, wooden ceiling beams and stone fireplaces also provide a woodsy point of view. Outdoor living spaces include a spacious back patio as well as a screened-in solarium, giving the homeowners and their guests the opportunity to enjoy nature in any kind of weather. In addition to having four bedrooms and four and a half baths, the house also boasts a great room, loft, home office and plenty of windows for one’s viewing pleasure. A cozy space thanks in part to the presence of rough-hewn wood ceiling beams and an inviting stone-clad fireplace, the great room was also made to feel open to the connecting outdoor patio, which is easily seen and accessed through a wall of glass doors. “I chose low furniture to allow the eye to flow through the room and absorb the outdoor dining area and patio as a continuous space,” says Holly Laughridge, whose choice of streamlined upholstered slipper chairs and sectional sofa offers guests the opportunity to relax by the fire. Framed botanicals and a rustic iron chandelier lend a mountain vibe to the space. The designer’s favorite pieces, however, are a pair of carved 19th-century mirrors, one of which is positioned next to another prominent feature of the room: a built-in bar that is filled with an enticing array of decanters and glassware.

Although “easy family living” was Susan PeaceVernon’s overall design goal for the kitchen and dining room, it was one item in particular that inspired both spaces: a charming safari-print fabric used for drapery detailed in shades of gold, green and coral. “The foliage, inviting colors and fun cheetahs brought the personality from the home’s wooded lot indoors,” says Peace-Vernon. Borrowing from the fabric’s golden hues, the designer warmed up the classically neutral kitchen by using brass hardware and fixtures, while coral accents, such as those seen in the Persian rug, also refer back to the inspiration fabric. A sleek, saucer-like light fixture illuminates the kitchen island. In the dining room, gold and coral tones are also prevalent, perhaps best seen in the eye-catching wall-art triptych and a contemporary burnished gold-tone chandelier, whose flashy lines contrast with the sleek dining table and chairs below. 99

A screened-in space that is every bit as detailed as the home’s interior rooms, the Carolina Room, designed by Joan Anderson, allows one to enjoy the fresh mountain air while basking in creature comforts. A wood-clad ceiling, stone fireplace and board-and-batten siding, not to mention the surrounding forest of trees, serve as a classic mountain setting for a host of organic furniture and accessories that are anything but rustic. Positioned to one side of the room, a pair of bleached rattan rocking chairs resemble a contemporary version of an iconic bentwood chair, while a woven rattan sofa and matching chairs present contrasting crisp lines. Nearby, a caned-wood rolling bar cart is given added glamour by partnering with a shimmery mirror and lamp. Anderson amplified the space with metal accents, like the stone-top table with an iron base and a gilded ceiling fixture in the shape of leaves.

UTILITY ROOM & PANTRY LISA WESTER, LISA WESTER INTERIORS Unique for utilitarian spaces, the laundry room and pantry are filled with treasures that speak to the past. Envisioning the laundry room as “a well-collected place that holds beautiful objects with an undeniable nod to the history of the area,” Lisa Wester leaned into the materials rich in character, like reclaimed flooring, charcoal-veined marble countertops and a stone farmhouse sink. An antique Persian rug and contemporary artwork elevate the space, and to give it local flair, Wester added a 19th-century iron and a washboard. Bright and cheery with splashes of color, the adjacent pantry also features vintage pieces, including a colorful set of 1940s-era handmade ceramic dinnerware, which the designer inherited from her grandmother. A coral-color roman shade, antique Tabriz rug and vibrant contemporary artwork round out the space, which acts as a festive environment to prepare for dinner parties, family get-togethers and other joyous occasions.

Giving new meaning to the concept of a home office, this room also serves as a sophisticated lounge to relax, enjoy cocktails and admire the artwork. Designer Lynn Monday pulled colors from the Gauguin painting that hangs above the sofa for the low-slung green velvet sofa, chaise and orange accent pillows. “I was worried about it being too low to the ground, but it turned out to be perfect for the space,” says Monday. In contrast to the black walls, burnished metal tables add shimmer to their surroundings. At one end of the room, a pair of black-and-white upholstered chairs flank a glass-top table with a sculptural branch base, yet another high-impact moment in this dramatic space. 103

Inspired by Cashiers’ wooded landscape as well as the home’s rustic aesthetic, Blackberry Farm Design conceived a primary bedroom that is both eclectic and refined. “We wanted the room to feel elevated and sophisticated, while at the same time drawing on the traditions, styles and rusticity of the mountains of Appalachia,” says director of design Jason D. Bell. The centerpiece of the room is the tailored bed, which is layered in a mix of custom, block-printed fabrics whose shades of green, ochre and yellow are a reflection of the colors seen in the neighboring forest. From the traditional turned-leg stools placed at the end of the bed to the woven ceiling fixture, the room’s furnishings are a diverse array of styles and organic materials, particularly the handpainted checkerboard sisal rug. But perhaps the most unique touch of all can be found on either side of the bed: wall collages that include framed vintage musical scores and miniature gilt ornaments. 105

A blend of escapism and fantasy, the primary bath is a “fresh, unexpected, youthful approach to mountain style,” says designer Stephanie Jarvis. A connecting hallway leading from the primary bedroom was papered in an Alicein-Wonderland-like checkerboard print, setting a whimsical tone for the bathroom, where yet another imaginative wallpaper, this time a modern mural paper that suggests a magical forest, wraps around the space. “I love the fantasy aspect of this paper and wanted to envelop the space in art,” says Jarvis, whose choice of luxurious mohair sheer curtains, a quirky vintage Turkish rug and a pair of rustic pedestals was equally unexpected. Quartzite waterfall vanity countertops with caramel veining appear sleek and fresh, as do custom-designed mirrors, whose limed-oak, hexagonal-shape frames elevate them to works of art. Stylish without being too serious, the bath is “a retreat for someone enjoying the peace of the mountains, away from everyday life.”

A secondary living area with large windows overlooking both the front and rear of the house, this loft-like space also has the added benefit of vaulted ceilings and a stone-clad fireplace. Inspired by the area’s lush foliage, Melanie Couch and Nancy Dyleski bathed the walls, ceilings and trim in a rich shade of green, creating a cozy environment that includes a pair of sofas positioned fireside. Warming gold and brass accents were also used, such as a metallic floral-motif chandelier that hangs above a contemporary quartz cocktail table. The designers’ “fresh take on old-school concepts” is particularly notable in the space the designers refer to as the “lookout,” which is defined by contemporary ivory-and-gold abstract wallpaper. Floral chintz curtains and a pair of vintage brown leather chairs beckon guests to spend time relaxing and soaking in the scenery, both inside and out.

HOWARD Starting with a neutral grasscloth wallcovering, a guest bedroom by Nellie Howard Ossi is a refuge layered in both softness and texture, designed to envelop guests in elegant comfort. Keeping the home’s landscape in mind, the designer established a color palette of browns and blue-greens while also choosing a classic floral-print fabric for both the window draperies and a luxurious bed canopy, something her designer family is known for. “I wouldn’t be a Howard if I didn’t do a dramatic bed treatment,” says Howard Ossi. Lined in checked fabric and accented by a gilt bullseye mirror, the canopy headlines a faux-painted bamboo bed dressed in cozy linens. The room’s furniture is a mix of antiques, such as the bedside table and chair, and contemporary upholstery, including a skirted corner chair. The adjacent bathroom continues the floral theme with a wallcovering detailed in stylized blooms and framed botanical prints.

For Francie Hargrove, it was the cool mountain summertime temperatures of the Western North Carolina mountains that inspired this tranquil guest bedroom. Walls painted in a soft mint green create a soothing environment for slumbering in a white hair-on-hide upholstered bed. The surrounding furnishings maintain the peaceful atmosphere, including a mother-of-pearl chest, a pair of painted bedside tables and pale linen curtains that are edged in mint green embroidered tape. A trove of unique accessories accent the space, including a collection of thistle plates, Southern pottery lamps and an antique rug. Equally soothing, the adjacent bathroom introduces darker accents, such as a black bamboo side table that ties in with the striking tiled floor. Chrome fixtures and an antique French mirror add glamour to the space, while a collection of mounted antlers serves as a reminder of the home’s enviable mountain location. 113

“Organic meets industrial” is how Atelier Maison & Co. describes its design scheme for this mountainmodern bedroom and bath. Wood furniture, such as the bedside drum table and a bleached burlwood armoire, introduces natural notes throughout the space. Dark metal accents are also prevalent in the contemporized version of a traditional iron bed, which is softened by a multitude of decorative pillows and a luxurious throw. A hand-knotted Turkish rug was the color inspiration for both spaces, whose combined blue and neutral palette creates a vibrant, yet serene, setting. Indeed, the color blue saturates walls and cabinetry in the bathroom, whose sleek look is accentuated by metal wall sconces and an unadorned round mirror. Wood again has a warming effect through the presence of geometric wooden objects.

Tasked with designing the frontof-house spaces that include the front porch, foyer, bench room and powder room, Douglas Hilton skillfully tied them all together through cohesive color and pattern. Take the powder room, for example, whose textured cork wallpaper is accentuated with a richly hued embroidered fabric. “I like giving a nod to the traditional mountain feel, so you have the classic blues, reds and greens of the paper, which carries through to tailored window treatments used on each of the three windows, unifying the spaces.” Hilton also chose furnishings that are evocative of the mountain setting, including North Carolina pottery pieces and a silver-plated horn chandelier, both of which accent the powder room. To create a sense of history for the home’s new construction, the designer mixed antiques, such as a pair of 19thcentury pedestals in the foyer, with contemporary artwork, most notably the two Cubist sculptures that greet visitors as they enter the home.

A generous space comprised of an outdoor kitchen, dining area and two separate seating arrangements, the back patio complements the home’s mountain setting while also offering some unexpected twists. Starting with an earth-tone color palette, Louise Johnson turned up the volume by introducing splashes of coral, Kelly green and chartreuse, a refreshing color combination that appears on striped area rugs, fabrics and accessories. Likewise, Johnson took a fresh approach when it came to choosing furniture. “The home’s architecture lends itself to a transitional style, with which I could mix both classic and contemporary pieces,” says Johnson. A pair of red fan-back chairs is partnered with snappy coralcolor upholstery and modern accent tables, while all-weather wicker chairs with curved backs surround a sleek dining table that is set for a colorful meal. Full of flair yet in harmony with its natural surroundings, the patio is “a fun space to share with family and friends.”
