And while 2023 wasn’t the year I chose the salad, learned Spanish, or bought entirely new furniture and decor for my home, I’ve decided to focus on the steps I did take in the right direction, like start Pilates and redownload DuoLingo (as you’re reading this, I’m practicing what I’ve learned with the locals in Spain). At home, small changes made a big difference—including new pillows, a switch out of art, and a fabulous countertop appliance addition that makes my dessert dreams come true. Though it may not be a total transformation, it’s enough to notice.

INSPIRED BY A NEW Atlanta residence’s expansive bucolic setting and the homeowners’ love for the equestrian lifestyle, architect Brandon Ingram of C. Brandon Ingram Design and Courtney Giles Decker of Courtney Giles Interiors translated a kitchen grounded in reserved elegance. “Our goal was to keep the interiors buttoned-up and refined, yet very approachable and comfortable,” says Ingram. “It’s not one single thing that screams out, it’s the entire composition whispering at you.” The team worked in concert, bringing together the clients’ must-have desires and inspirations. “They had many elements that they liked, but there was never one kitchen they wanted to replicate,” says Decker. “Between me, Brandon, and Kingdom Woodworks, we melded together all of the things they liked into this calming, beautiful kitchen.” While the language of the architecture was kept quiet, rich details were woven throughout. Touches of brass hardware and sculptural fittings work in cohesive harmony with the millwork, cabinetry, and antique limestone flooring, and purposefully placed windows capture the light and the outdoors. “It’s a layered feel, whether you’re looking out the windows or looking from the kitchen to the other interior spaces like the butler’s pantry,” says Ingram. Commanding the most attention, however, is a black metal range hood, which complements the handsome pantry nearby. “This was a team effort. We all worked together for the right shape, finish, and brass band that ties in with the hardware and light fixtures,” says Decker. The designer also dreamed up a striking fluted island for another special moment. The ultimate testament to their teamwork: the homeowners’ reaction. “They told us, ‘We’ve never seen a kitchen that we completely loved until we saw our own,’” says Ingram. “That’s an amazing compliment.”

WHEN ARCHITECT KEVIN CLARK, a senior principal at Historical Concepts, began plotting the transformation of his own home’s kitchen, he treated it like a client. He wanted to create a sense of place, pulling inspiration from its 1930s English-cottage style to compose a historic-meetsmodern kitchen. For his family, who loves to regularly cook and eat meals together, an open kitchen concept didn’t work. “Open floor plans in a small house can feel like less space. Walls are important for storage and art,” he says of converting the former tight galley kitchen into three distinct spaces that include a tiled-wall scullery for pantry items and appliances and a richly hued butler’s pantry that doubles as a bar. The kitchen is enveloped in a deep blue, inspired by a William Morris wallcovering found in the nearby family room, and boasts architectural features such as paneled cabinetry and a grid ceiling turned to a 45-degree angle and
dotted with lights to balance the unsymmetrical kitchen. “I feel like when you’re surrounded by a rich color and intricate architectural details, it’s like being cocooned in a warm blanket,” says Clark. A wall of steel and glass also allows light to float in, softening the blue hue’s dramatics. Clark gushes about special touches that tell a story, like the island countertop that was repurposed from a white oak tree in his backyard. Other standouts that recall the character of the English cottage include a custom marble farmhouse-style sink and a hefty French range, all of which mingle with touches of art like the marble backsplash that commands attention above the range. “It’s modern with all the functional bells and whistles, yet the aesthetics look as if it’s always been in the house,” he says. “As you come through the house, you have to discover the kitchen. When people see it, there’s an audible gasp. It’s a rewarding feeling to have folks wowed.” 27

A YOUNG COUPLE LIVING in a tuckedaway, wooded neighborhood in the Buckhead-Sandy Springs area wanted their midcentury modern home’s kitchen to be big on scenic views and natural light. Architectural designer Derek Hopkins and interior designer Karen Ferguson of Harrison Design worked together to create a tranquil, yet impactful kitchen reflective of its nature-rich surroundings. “Architecturally, we maximized the amount of natural light entering the kitchen by incorporating more windows and skylights,” says Hopkins. “The kitchen also became an indoor-outdoor space thanks to a wall of motorized sliding glass doors that lead to a large exterior deck, built specifically for entertaining.” With an open floor plan to the dining and living rooms, Ferguson used reverse psychology when reimagining the kitchen. “We wanted it to feel more like a living space, not just a kitchen, so the spaces
are uniform,” she says. Pale oak cabinetry purposely mimics wood paneling, and everything is touch latch—including the refrigerator and freezer—with upper steel cabinetry concealing the range hood. Contrasting walnut floors complement the cabinetry’s bleached oak, presenting beautifully with the ivory walls. Ferguson also brought nature indoors with a wide-edge organic wood bar countertop. “It’s almost like a piece of art in the room—it’s very sculptural,” adds Hopkins. Dashes of rich color and organic texture add interest to the quiet space, from a statement-making rug with feathers to contemporary counter stools in navy leather with copper metal bases. “We purchased items that made a big impact in the space,” says Ferguson. A glass-enclosed wine room plays off the kitchen, reinforcing the same materials again, while the dining room features an ethereal chandelier that iridescently reflects the natural light. “It’s a serene place but it’s also a workhorse of a kitchen,” she says. “You can have something that works really well, yet be gorgeous at the same time.” 35

Now that her longtime clients’ kids are grown, they desired a modern, spacious hub to gather and entertain. To achieve everything on their kitchen wish list, Rhodes and builder Chuck Tice knocked down walls to create an open floor plan to the adjoining breakfast room and family room, added windows for more sunlight, and reoriented the kitchen to face the backyard. “It’s literally a whole new layout,” says Rhodes. “Nothing looks the same.” The kitchen’s showpiece is a stunning island with a 3-inch mitered edge marble countertop, and other focal points include a custom hood with brass strap details and a marble slab backsplash that mimics the island. While the client desired an all-white kitchen, Rhodes added splashes of color for interest. “My client loves blue and green, so we painted the island a fun blue color which set the tone for the
kitchen,” says Rhodes, who custom color-matched window treatments and the bench seat for further harmony and ran the cohesive blue-green colors throughout the three rooms. Fluted cabinetry grandly flanks the sink, with a full fridge and freezer on either side. “I wanted it to have the look of furniture, so it wasn’t an entire wall of white cabinetry,” she says. A wall of steel windows in the breakfast room, with doors that lead to the loggia, and a large window above the kitchen sink allow ample sunlight to flood the spaces. A scullery conceals a covetable prep area, morning coffee station, and large pantry storage, which can be closed off from the kitchen with a pocket door when guests arrive. Additional kitchen cabinetry can be opened and closed to hide a TV and appliances. “The beauty of this kitchen is that we were able to hide the function,” says Rhodes. “So, when they entertain, they’re sitting in this beautiful space and almost forget that they’re in the kitchen.”

Cameron Bishop is a co-founder of Atlanta-based residential design studio Bishop and Bartos. KIMBERLY WARREN
A certified kitchen designer and agingin-place specialist, Kimberly got her start in the industry when her father took her to her first NKBA industry show in 1985. From that day on she was hooked. Warren received an interior design degree from Purdue University in 1992 with a focus on building construction. Michael Bell, president of Bell Cabinetry & Design, notes that the inspiration behind the design stems from his desire to fuse luxury and functionality. “We wanted the vanity to embrace a furniture-like piece, while also pushing the limits of creativity on the countertop design.” And it was unique, indeed, thanks to A Touch of Stone, Inc.’s unparalleled countertop fabrication, which was a fan-favorite during the run of show. Adding a pop of color to the overall neutral palette, the cabinetry was swathed in a blue high-gloss finish paint. KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL THE DESIGNERY, cites a burgeoning trend for scullery-type spaces designed to work in tandem with the main kitchen. “We have never had more requests or been working on more of these spaces that function alongside the main kitchen,” says Shearer. “All of these secondary areas allow the main kitchen to be visually less cluttered and the cooking space as a whole to be more organized.” Another bonus, according to Shearer, is that these self-contained spaces allow for more adventurous decor, such as lively floor patterns. Kitchen cabinetry is also getting a makeover, especially when it comes to finish. Shearer notes that color contrasting between islands and perimeter cabinetry is on the wane, while a play on color saturation is gaining in popularity. One thing that has remained the same is the positive effect a well-designed kitchen has on a home’s value, says Shearer. “Even if you don’t cook, it is undeniable that the kitchen is going to act as the hub of the house, and having a beautiful one will really elevate the home as a whole.”

IT’S JANUARY, MEANING I should have composed my list of New Year’s resolutions by now. If you’ve read this column in years past, you’ll know that I rarely follow through with them. Did I ever learn another language, take up basket weaving, or lose two dress sizes? Nope. Perhaps if I had kept my resolutions to myself over the years, I wouldn’t feel quite so guilty about my lack of commitment. Although my inclination is to stop making resolutions—or at least, stop publicizing them—I do have a few things that I want to work on or improve over the coming year. Not so much hard-core resolutions, but more like informal goals, if you will. The first is to broaden my design horizons. Every time you walk through the showrooms at ADAC (or any other design center, for that matter), don’t you find a million different fabrics, wallpaper, and furnishings that you would love to use, either in your own home or a client’s? I know I do. Maybe it’s time for me to branch out and explore new territory, such as a neutral color palette, abstract prints, and contemporary furniture by Pierre Yovanovitch. It may not sound like much to you, but to someone wedded to antiques, even considering a fuzzy chair designed to look like an upholstered bear (look it up) constitutes branching out, I assure you. Something else on my not-a-resolution list is to finally dip into some of the classics that I’ve been meaning to read for years. I’m thinking of starting with something by Graham Greene before moving on to…Flaubert? No, better make that Dorothy Parker, whose oeuvre I haven’t finished exploring. If I want to actually achieve one of my 2024 goals, I better stick to work that is light and fizzy. Come to think of it, I bet Parker never bothered with New Year’s resolutions. In fact, I think that one of her most famous quips might kind of explain my lack of success in fulfilling my resolutions: “You can’t teach an old dogma new tricks.”

Atlanta restaurateur Ford Fry introduces his latest concept, Parisian-inspired restaurant LITTLE SPARROW Written by EVAN EDWARDS
WHAT WAS ONCE THE well-known JCT. Kitchen & Bar has transformed into an entirely new concept—and this time with a French flair. Another brainchild of celebrated chef Ford Fry, Little Sparrow made its mouthwatering debut to Westside Provisions District last fall. “Little Sparrow is the sister restaurant to Marcel, our beloved steakhouse,” says Fry. “We desire going to eat where we know we will feel good, and that’s how we designed Little Sparrow. It’s a place to indulge but also just a great spot to grab a perfect medium-rare burger and fries.” From its tableside service to the rich and cozy furnishings, dining at Little Sparrow is an elevated experience. Executive chef Bob Ryan describes the dishes as timeless continental cuisine heavily influenced by European chefs 70

from the 1970s. “We want to add luxury back into dining by way of caviar, butter, truffles, and even just a simple dry-aged burger,” says Ryan. “Plus, we couldn’t create Little Sparrow’s menu without adding an entire section for frites—and frites only. Our frites are thrice-cooked for the perfect fluffy inside and super crispy outside.” There are also plenty of savory hors d’oeuvres like the Onion Soup Gratinée, Salade Maison, and Aleppo Shrimp. To sip, opt for one of Little Sparrow’s craft cocktails. “Our cocktail list includes gussied-up gin and tonics like the Génépy Highball and one of our fan favorites, Le Petit Martini, which is the simple and perfect answer for when you want one more martini, but maybe just not all of it,” says beverage manager Allison Lovelace. This is the second annual Cathedral Giving By Design! It continues our beautiful tradition of The Cathedral Antiques Show, emphasizing generosity, design, and beauty. Thank you, Tucker Mahoney and Sara Blackwood for shepherding the second Cathedral Giving by Design with amazing grace, excellence, and hospitality! I remind guests that the Cathedral of St. Philip is a beautiful and sacred space, but that we are especially a vibrant church community. St. Philip’s Church was established in 1847 as the first Episcopal Church in Atlanta; we became a Cathedral Church in 1904 and moved to our present location here in Buckhead in 1932. We are grateful to have grown tremendously since then. We grow because people love serving God here! I am also thrilled that the outreach proceeds this year are designated for The Boyce L. Ansley School, whose mission is to educate children in our community experiencing homelessness in Kindergarten through 4th grade. Our gifts this year will also go to provide vital support services for their families to break generational cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. Again, I sincerely thank Tucker Mahoney and Sara Blackwood for their outstanding and faithful leadership. As co-chairs, they have organized and worked with hundreds of volunteers in creating this complex event. And I thank Mary Perrin, the Honorary Chair of this year’s Cathedral Giving By Design. It is with great pleasure that our community is gathering to celebrate the joy of home and hospitality, while raising funds for a worthy, local non-profit organization. With all net proceeds of the event going directly to the beneficiary, we are excited to support the Boyce L. Ansley School as our 2024 recipient. The Boyce L. Ansley School is a tuition-free private school that educates children experiencing homelessness in Atlanta and provides vital support services for families to break generational cycles of poverty and housing insecurity. The Ansley School’s mission is to provide a child-centered, high-quality education and collaborative family support, while taking into consideration the unique traumas associated with experiencing homelessness. Join us as we raise funds for the Ansley School to add a 5th grade for the 2024-2025 school year. We have been inspired by the Ansley School community’s care and dedication to grow the school grade by grade. Through Cathedral Giving By Design, the Ansley School will be able to provide a consistent, high-quality education for the entirety of a student’s elementary school career. The 2024 event will be a design and décor showcase, sure to inspire! On Friday, January 19, 2024, festivities will kick off with a welcome party at the Cathedral of St. Philip featuring live music, dinner, cocktails, and a live auction. On Saturday morning, we will welcome back renowned design tastemaker, Christina Dandar, who pens the wildly popular blog The Potted Boxwood. Christina will moderate a panel discussion with Atlanta design luminaries Melanie Turner, Will Huff, Heather Dewberry and Mallory Mathison Glenn, and Houston-based Paloma Contreras. Following this rousing discussion, grab a friend and join us for an insiders’ tour of four fine homes around Buckhead and Ansley Park. From Melanie Turner’s personal home, also known as the Pink Castle, to a colorful Ansley Park gem designed by Bryan Patrick Flynn, it will be an afternoon you will not want to miss. Planning and executing Cathedral Giving By Design has been a labor of love and would not be possible without our amazing committee. When a child steps into The Ansley School, we understand they do not always come from predictable situations. We provide them with structure, motivation, and care that allows them to learn and grow up in an empowering and safe environment.
At The Ansley School, we emphasize the importance of community and love to see the seeds of understanding being nurtured at such a young age. While she might not grasp the deeper complexities of community just yet, she sets the stage for the wonderful journey of understanding the strength found in unity and the warmth of a supportive community.
One particularly tough day for one of our kindergarteners changed during recess when she realized she was surrounded by friends and those who care about her. Suddenly, when being asked to do something, she instantly lit up and insisted that she wanted to help but also wanted her friends to join her. As she continues her education at The Ansley School, we have watched her begin to learn the importance of togetherness.
BE B BEYOND EY E YO Y ON O ND N DC CI CIRCUMSTANCE IIR RCU UM MS M ST TA AN NC CE C E The Ansley School serves 63 students and 50 families, 95% of which fall at or below the federal poverty line. Our families live throughout the Metro Atlanta area and bordering counties that include Fulton, Dekalb, Hall, and Clayton. Families come to us primarily from shelters, local partners, extended-stay hotels, or by word of mouth. Once they are enrolled in our program, we begin working with them on a plan to regain their stability. Families who are with us longer and have received continuous assistance often end up above the federal poverty line. Beyond the circumstances that brought them here, we encourage our families to stay with our program and keep their children enrolled, as we know that most children who experience trauma tend to have the negative effects of it manifest in middle school. The Ansley School is equipped to recognize those behaviors, understand where they come from, and act swiftly to reverse any negative patterns. We are well into the process of completing our elementary school and will continue to add a new grade each year until we have achieved K-8 elementary and middle school programs. At The Ansley School, our students receive a thorough education that addresses the complexities of their lives and the traumas associated with it that often affect academics. Homelessness and housing instability often cause transience as families are forced to relocate frequently. Our school allows them to continue attending regardless of the district they live in. We are funded primarily through grants from corporations, foundations, and gifts from private donors. Thanks to Cathedral’s Giving By Design, we can continue towards our school’s growth and expand to a 5th grade by 2024.

THE PINK CASTLE
The Calhoun-Thornwell Estate, known locally as the Pink Castle, is now home to designer Melanie Turner and her husband, builder Stan Benecki. Acclaimed Atlanta architect, Philip Trammel Shutze, designed and built the Venetian villa-inspired home in the 1920s, which was considered “one of the showplaces of Georgia’’ in the years following its completion. The 10,000-square-foot house defines glamour. The home showcases many original details, such as crystal light fixtures, hand-painted murals, and plasterwork in harmony with magnificent art and antique furnishings, as befits this warm and historic grand estate. In what he calls one of his most creatively fulfilling projects ever, designer Brian Patrick Flynn worked his magic on this incredible gem in Ansley Park. The vivid new traditional home artfully features many of the owner’s heirloom furnishings for a bright and cheerful space that is ideal for a busy young family. The home is filled with saturated hues and patterns on patterns to stunning visual effect. The private backyard is an oasis including a pool and entertaining space, all steps away from the city.

soft and serene Earthy tones and rich textures create an inviting yet sophisticated feeling in the living room of Showhouse 1, designed by Emily Dunn. “I opted for shades of caramel and cinnamon, as well as pottery and warm wood,” says Dunn. “They form the foundation, making the space feel serene and cozy.” A reclaimed-wood coffee table, sisal rug, faux-fur chair, and preserved botanicals nod to the nature visible from the room’s large-scale windows while adding dimension. A dramatic 15-foot plaster fireplace—which 94

For the covered porch of Showhouse 1, June Chamberlain, owner and principal designer of June Chamberlain Interiors, worked with senior designer Lisa Uihlein to create an eclectic, comfortable space by layering textures and warm hues. Her jumping-off point for the room was an antique Turkish kilim rug, which she repurposed as a table skirt on the room’s center table. “We decided to create a strong focal point and drop a large chandelier over it so you would have a glimpse of the space when you walked into the home,” says Chamberlain. Adding to the room’s collected feel are 1970s-inspired rattan chairs and antique details, including a pair of antlers, weathered shutters—used as wall decor—a console, and a worn portrait. Says Chamberlain, “We wanted to create a warm, casual, and inviting space to gather outside.”

Designers Melody Richardson and Marlee Vlassis outfitted the open-concept kitchen, dining room, and garden room to function and flow together. To complement the light and bright energy of the kitchen’s white cabinetry—designed by Bell Cabinetry & Design—and the lofty ceilings and windows of the dining room and living room, the designers kept things airy, layering in rich textures and strategic pops of color through artwork and rugs. “We combined pieces that were special enough to have a presence in the grandeur of the tall ceilings and windows, but used natural finishes and local artwork to keep it relatable and comfortable,” says Vlassis. In contrast, they selected a moody blue paint (Benjamin Moore Hamilton Blue) for the garden room, which also features an herb wall and a flowing water fixture. “The intention for this space was to create an experience that envelops you and activates all of your senses for a perfect little respite from the rest of the world,” says Richardson. “We envisioned easy flow between the spaces, making this a garden-to-table home.”

On her first site visit to the Serenbe Showhouse, designer Loren Taylor was struck by the textures and colors of the surrounding pine trees and Georgia clay. “I was inspired to add those elements and ground the suite through rhythm and repetition,” says Taylor, who set out to create a comfortable, versatile guest retreat. In the bedroom, she pulled in the Georgia clay with purposeful pops of orange found in a painting by Kim Goldstein. Comfortable textures—such as the velvet on the custom daybed and Persian rug underfoot—add interest to a calming color scheme of white and cream, as does a large antique Italian tramp art mirror. In the bathroom, Taylor complemented the lounge’s textures with a silver-and-gold cork wallcovering, which “reflects the gold plumbing fittings and lighting fixtures.” Likewise, Thibaut’s La Palma Bark grasscloth in the laundry room calls upon Serenbe’s pine trees. “I wanted there to be a sense of calmness as you enter the space. We wanted it to strike a balance of having just the right amount of items,” says the designer.

Designer Buffy Ferguson anchored the primary bedroom and bath with English design sensibilities, adding a modern twist with her choice in colors and materials. “We wanted this room to feel at home in Serenbe,” says Ferguson. “A warm and inviting space with uniquely curated pieces that feel elevated but timeworn and livedin.” Fine antiques—such as the four-poster bed, Louis XIII chair, and Persian rug—play off luxe textures in the form of tweed shams and a faux-fur blanket. When it came to the color scheme, Newton Paisley’s Theobroma Tree of Life fabric, which is used on the bed’s lumbar pillow, “became our North Star,” says Ferguson. “The walls were kept a soft, warm white, and we brought in various hues that all have their moment but don’t compete. It makes the eye dance around the space.” The primary bathroom is anchored by a curvaceous tub and artwork from Southern artists Jordan Wright Patterson, Judy Walker, and Kathryn Keller. Says Ferguson, “Mixing their artistic creations with classic English charm and our own modern touch resulted in a space that feels sophisticated and personal.”

For the lower lounge, designer Ashley Miller created a sleek retreat that took advantage of the room’s elongated shape, bar area, and abundance of natural light. To maximize space, the designer created two distinct seating areas. On one end, a coffee table and four slipper chairs (which are armless to allow for “easy in, easy out,” says the designer) create an inviting gathering space by the bar. On the other end, Miller positioned a more casual seating arrangement, opting for two skirted chairs and a backless sofa, which provided plenty of room to lounge without obstructing the views outside. In the lower-level bedroom, designer Steve McKenzie looked to the natural beauty visible from the room’s large windows. “The first time I walked in the room—early summer—the green of the oak trees and the big strong tree trunks informed my design,” says McKenzie. “I knew instantly I wanted the green of the trees for the walls and the bed to reflect the oak tree trunks.” The designer enveloped the room in Sherwin-Williams Saguaro, “the perfect yellow-green to reflect the outdoors—specifically the
early summer leaves,” he says. A stately oak bed frame grounds the space in nature, as does a natural cowhide chaise and painterly works of art. An antiqueinspired desk is positioned in front of the window to take advantage of Serenbe’s enchanting landscape. “As an artist myself, I love the desk in front of the window, where I could sit and paint while enjoying the natural view,” says McKenzie. “I wanted to create a place of rest and inspiration that celebrated the natural beauty of Serenbe.”

Seeking to create a serene, biophilic sanctuary, designer Lanada Chanel Duncan focused on appealing to the senses and representing nature when designing the terrace porch of Showhouse 1. “I wanted the space to have a tranquil, Afro-bohochic vibe to it,” says the designer, who anchored the room with a large artwork by James Lewis of Noire3000 | N3k Photo Studios framed in ruched fabric. A persimmon tree console table, a 7-foottall water fountain, and live plants (majesty palm trees and crotons) create a sense of indoor-outdoor living, as do woven palm leaf pillows, a rattan lantern, and wicker chairs. An outdoor sofa and four occasional chairs, upholstered in all-weather fabrics, provide a comfortable place to soak it all in. “All of this was meant to play well with the beautiful treetop views of the Mado Hamlet,” she says. “Everything was meant to support our effort to stimulate the senses and inspire wellness living through biophilic design.” 106

Modern touches and natural elements create harmony in the Showhouse 2 kitchen by Pamela Stakemann, who also served as the 2023 Serenbe Designer Showhouse lead designer. “In an effort to stay true to the naturalist theme of Serenbe, we incorporated natural, organic design elements into the space to bring some life to the kitchen,” says Stakemann. Tall, white oak cabinetry—custom made by Bell Cabinetry & Design—features a warm, custom-blended stain and provides visual balance to the room’s lofty 15-foot ceilings. Honed quartzite countertops “incorporate a range of nature-inspired colors, from sky blue to dark blue, as well as earthy gold and rust,” notes Stakemann. Painted ceiling beams extend into the dining and living areas, unifying all three spaces. “We wanted to make the space feel warm and inviting, playing off of the cottage theme but incorporating some modern touches with natural elements,” says Stakemann. In the powder room, she worked with Construction Resources to create a custom Avenza marble sink that maximizes space with a wall-mounted faucet and backsplash shelf for soaps and toiletries. Says Stakemann, “The powder room is a small space, so the design challenge was how to make it feel special and unique while still being efficient.”

A pair of photographs by artist Thomas Jackson depicting Serenbe’s natural landscape served as the jumping-off point for designer Hope Austin when designing the living room and dining room. “It’s very sophisticated work, but it has a festive vibe—it’s completely unique and without pretense,” says Austin, who brought shades of teal and gold into both spaces. In place of a traditional sofa and chairs, the designer grounded the living room with four custom swivel chairs upholstered in a teal mohair fabric.
And rather than dining chairs, Austin selected a custom banquette and three stools—upholstered in performance fabrics “so everyone can eat, drink, and be merry without worrying about spills”—to maintain an open flow of space between each room. “The idea is that these stools can easily be moved to accommodate more seating in the living room.” To define each distinct space, Austin grounded each room with a rug from Keivan Woven Arts. “In an open plan, it’s important to find a way to delineate different areas and functions,” explains Austin.

Designer Calvin Watt had a sophisticated bachelor suite in mind when designing the primary bedroom and bath of Showhouse 2. He anchored the bedroom with an upholstered bed from Arhaus and a striking canvas artwork by Bella Lane positioned overhead. “There are multiple centerpieces in the room, but nothing overpowered the main center of the room, which was the bed and artwork,” explains Watt. Adding softness are organic materials and light textures, which include a jute rug, jute chandelier, velvet pillows, and velour and vinyl bedding. In the primary bath, Watt packed a punch by mixing pops of gold—abstract gold sculptures and a gold sconce—with the silver hardware. “I like to design every room so you can stay in it for hours,” says Watt. “You turn your music on, dim the lights, and enjoy what life has given you.” 113

Panoramic views of Serenbe’s landscape informed Beverly Baribault’s design of the covered porch. “I carefully chose colors that wouldn’t distract from the beautiful vista but instead enhance its natural beauty,” explains Baribault, who custom-designed nearly every detail. “I selected an exquisite rust-colored velvet from the French fabric house Métaphores as the foundation color and then built the fabric scheme around it.” To accentuate the room’s lofty ceilings, Baribault swathed one wall in Kravet fabric and Lee Jofa trim, which also appears on the love seat’s velvet throw pillows. A scalloped valance and drapery fabric frame the room’s floorto-ceiling windows. “By framing the exterior opening with exquisite fabrics, the view takes on a personalized, almost integral role within the space,” says Baribault.

Neutral hues and natural elements create a sense of calm in the bedroom, bath, and utility rooms, designed by Chaz Easterly. “Linen & Flax is big on keeping everything neutral and natural with lots of material in our design,” says Easterly. “I envisioned empty nesters using this space. They have left the hustle and bustle of Atlanta for a more quiet and serene space to unwind and live in a natural and beautiful setting.” A mix of tactile materials—including linen, velvet, marble, and wood—adds texture and interest to the room’s overall neutral scheme. Likewise, a linen wallcovering in the utility room adds subtle dimension and pattern. “We chose a wallcovering with lots of texture and subtle flowers, bringing the serenity and natural palette of Serenbe inside,” says Easterly. 115

When designing the terrace-level bedroom, bathroom, and covered porch, designer Beth Kooby set out to create a dreamy, Italian-inspired sanctuary. “I definitely saw the terrace level as being somewhat of an escape from the rest of the house, whether that’s for teenagers or the in-laws,” says Kooby. A recent trip to Milan and Lake Como in Italy informed her design choices in the bedroom, including striped walls, a 1960s vintage Italian Murano glass light fixture, and a Calacatta
Viola Extra marble bedside table. A showstopping custom mohair headboard serves as a subtle nod to the gentle waves of Lake Como. Kooby carried its striking plum color into the bathroom with an ornate Kit Miles wallpaper. Meanwhile, the covered porch is “still in Italy, but more Mediterranean,” says Kooby. A vintage Italian marble table and a twin daybed provide the perfect place to lounge or gather. Says Kooby, “I wanted each space to have a fantastic feel to it.”

Inspired by the scale and warmth of Italian hillside architecture, architectural designer Steve Dray and South Haven Builders embraced natural materials such as cedar wood, stacked fieldstone, and stucco masonry for the 2023 Serenbe Designer Showhouses. To complement this exterior, Lucinda Bray of Floralis designed a lowmaintenance landscape that would look beautiful throughout the seasons. “We used a mixture of evergreen shrub plantings and groundcover to create a plant palette for year-round interest,” says Bray, who also mixed in seasonal plantings in stone planters outside each residence. Keeping all the bedrooms of each townhouse to one side allowed the living spaces to have dramatic ceiling heights and open-concept layouts, as well as double back porches offering views of Serenbe’s Mado Hamlet. Located at Chimney Top of High Hampton, the 2023 Cashiers Designer Showhouse has “a timeless design that is a balance between mountain rustic and subtle elegance,” says architectural designer and builder Jim Robinson, who based the home’s elevated mountain vernacular on natural materials that complement the landscape. The striking exterior has siding consisting of natural stone, poplar bark, and cedar siding shingles, plus a cedar shake roof that will acquire patina over time. The home’s
interiors, on the other hand, have a more refined palette that features Venetian plaster ceilings, Calista marble countertops, and white oak floors stained a muted brown. Because the lot has an impressive vantage point of Rock Mountain, Robinson oriented the house so that the main living spaces and the covered porch can take full advantage of the views. The home’s landscaping, which emphasizes hardy native plants, was designed by John Warren to, in Robinson’s words, “look like it’s been there forever.”

Because the house’s richly textured exterior already makes a statement, Abbi Williams took a pared-down approach to the front porch’s furnishings, framing the space around the front door with a few well-chosen pieces. “I didn’t want to complicate the space with mindless pattern or accessories. Less is truly more if you get the correct pieces in place.” Black outdoor chairs are partnered with crisp white cushions, a contemporary flourish that contrasts with the home’s mountain-oriented architecture. Another contrasting element that imbues the space with warmth are the large antique baskets that overflow with lavender, the one note of color in the otherwise neutralhued entry. “The entire design was driven by wanting to create a moment to welcome guests into the home,” says Williams. “That sense of arrival, of coming onto the entry porch and seeing familiar faces answer the door.” 123

For the foyer and powder room, Melanie Couch and Nancy Dyleski rooted their design in nature, doing so in a surprising way—by choosing a cloud-print wallpaper that appears in both spaces. “As full-time designers in Highlands and Cashiers, we are always mesmerized by the way the clouds and fog shift and move in the
mountain valleys,” says Couch. “Incorporating nature into design is not a new concept, but one usually thinks of flora and fauna.” Another atmospheric note is the foyer’s wall and trim color, Providence Blue by Benjamin Moore. “We wanted you to feel like you were actually being hugged in fog.” A floating skirted table, which stands in the center of the foyer, wears a masculine wood plaid, a nod to traditional mountain decor. Modern accents balance the mix, including the designers’ favorite piece, an abstract mirror in the powder room that echoes the surrounding cloud print. 125

Referring to the great room’s design as “mountain casual for everyday living,” Stacie Platt created a space that encourages family and friends to spend time together. “I tried to incorporate elements that allow for a comfortable living space with practical elements and a bit of whimsy.” To make the tall, vaulted space feel cozy, Platt used texture-rich upholstery fabrics, like the chenille that covers the sofa and chairs that have a prime position by the stone
fireplace. “The chenille fabric enhances the desire to curl up in front of the fire, pull up a blanket, and spend the day enjoying the relaxing pace of the mountains.” She also worked within a warm color palette to make the space feel even more welcoming. In addition to the room’s primary seating, Platt introduced a slew of eye-catching pieces, including small accent chairs, ottoman poufs, and a stacked console table that is situated behind the sofa.

A space for relaxing and dining in fresh air, the covered porch was conceived for “a couple that likes to entertain,” says Lynn Monday, who based her design around a set of four architectural chairs with strong, angular lines. Together with the boldly striped rug and a dark, round cocktail table, the chairs provide ballast for the room’s other notable feature, a vaulted ceiling. The overall color palette is neutral, in part to allow the space to blend into its surroundings, which include the living room on one side and wooded scenery on the other. At the edge of the space, the designer assembled furniture made for casual entertaining, including a sleek dining table, woven, barrel-back chairs, and a buffet console partnered with a sculpture of a deer. The room’s most unexpected detail—and a highlight of the space, according to Monday—is a stacked cork chandelier that hangs overhead.

A cozy outdoor space that is tucked away in the woods, the lower firepit is surrounded by stone, culminating in a freestanding fireplace. Assembling a color palette that reflects the landscape, Lauren Robbins partnered green hues with rich shades of red, purple, and pink, explaining, “We needed to use rich, bold colors to offset the neutral tones of the stone.” Swivel armchairs are covered in a vibrantly patterned outdoor fabric, a necessity in an uncovered space. For added zest, she introduced two different fabrics for throw pillows, including a green check and a floral print. Another surprising element not often seen outdoors is the painting that hangs on the fireplace chimney. One of the designer’s most welcome gestures—in addition to the armchairs, of course—is a bar. “With the firepit being away from the home, we ensured drinks and entertainment could be easily on hand when enjoying the outdoors.”

Open to the kitchen and great room, the dining room manages to stand out with dynamic furnishings that distinguish the space, from the leather chandelier that Lisa Wester had made in South Africa down to the vibrant green stemware on the dining table. Taking her cue from the outdoor landscape, Wester focused on natural materials and colors that work well with the space’s interior architecture, including the wood ceiling beams and the chestnut
wood wall of the adjacent wet bar. “We painted the canvas with the rich hues of the mountains, paying special attention to things found in nature.” Genuine deer hides appear on the backs of custom dining chairs, while the host and hostess chairs wear amber-colored velvet on the front and a hand-painted patterned linen on the back. Similar tones can be seen in the antique rug that delineates the dining area and the bar’s Tibetan tiger rug.

Starting with its coffered ceiling, which was added to create a feeling of intimacy within the open space, the home’s kitchen is full of interesting finishes and thoughtful details. “I wanted to incorporate warm neutrals for the hard finishes to create a fresh, yet timeless look,” says Hallie Lycans, who partnered quartzite countertops with lightly colored border cabinetry. Both the ceiling and range hood are Venetian plaster, but by using a different
neutral color finish for each, Lycans was able to emphasize each application. 2Dark metal finishes—seen on hardware, barstools, and a trio of pendant lights that hang above the island—accent the space, as do shades of blue, green, and orange, seen primarily in accessories and the barstool upholstery. And by forgoing shades on the large window behind the sink, the designer not only maximized the space’s natural light, but the glorious outdoor views as well. 133

A surprisingly glamorous space, the laundry room is notable for sophisticated details and lavender-blush walls, a color that Heather McKeown borrowed from the hydrangeas and joe-pye that blanket the area in late summer and early fall. “I wanted the laundry room to envelop guests in a blissful rosey cocoon and transport them via a color blast to a soothing oasis where you could light a candle, have a glass of champagne, and hang your clothes right
along with your flowers.” A dynamic painting of a woman jumping adds further excitement to the space. McKeown treated the mudroom as an extension of the home’s wooded setting, beginning with a grasscloth wallpaper patterned in shimmery leaves. A jade green ceiling and trim and a golden-toned bench also speak to the outdoor landscape. Unique accents include a sheepskin rug and a 1920s urn with footed legs, which is used as a vessel for ferns.

Branching out from the shades of blue she often works with, Nellie Jane Ossi designed a bedroom whose entire look was created with the outdoors in mind, starting with its deep green, textured wallpaper. “It felt like a natural place to start because of the lush mountainous landscape.” Choosing red as a color accent (“I love the way green and red work together without feeling holiday”), Ossi upholstered the room’s skirted love seat in a botanical-print fabric in sand and rich red tones. Antique and rustic wood furniture also feel appropriate for the setting, including an antique stump table and wicker mirror. Designed to be a warm space, the room is layered with softness, from the luxurious bed linens down to the kilim rug. One of the room’s highlights is the designer’s inspired choice of ceiling paper: a starry print that gives those slumbering beneath it the sensation of sleeping under the stars.

Quietly elegant, the primary bathroom and closet were designed by Holly Watson to be a respite from the outside world. “I wanted it to be restful, luxurious, and comfortable.” Influenced by the bathroom cabinetry’s existing blue-green finish, the designer established a color palette of blue and natural tones, an enticing combination seen in the sky blue, ivory, and taupe striped drapery that frames windows in both the tub room and closet. Other fabrics include a flora-and-fauna print by Thibaut. Used for window shades and a feminine skirted chair in the tub room, the print is a reference to the home’s wooded landscape and carries into the primary closet, where an upholstered bench partnered with a set of petite tables provides a spot to relax and enjoy a cocktail or cup of tea. Says Watson, “The room was designed for anyone who sometimes needs a break.” 138

Although the yoga room might be equipped with a few expected details such as mats and blocks, overall, it is a uniquely sophisticated space where one can also practice meditation or sound therapy. The room’s mood is soothing, the result of ample natural
light and a soft, earthy color palette. “I’m used to vibrant jewel tones, but we wanted this space to be serene and distinctly feminine with a soft earth grounding color,” says Douglas Hilton, who maintained the room’s lightness by hanging Lucite brackets on the wall, an assemblage which holds assorted crystals. Anglo-Indian furniture adds personality to the space, as does the room’s artwork, including a gilded bronze sculpture and paintings. The room is not without fun, however, with both ceiling paper and drapery fabric chosen for their luster. “The sparkle in the drapery and ceiling paper adds playfulness.” 139

Located along a passageway, an upstairs loft-like space was transformed by Janice Dietz into a quiet retreat suitable for relaxing, reading, working, or gathering. “I considered the other rooms in the house to determine how to give this space function.” Grounding the space with an antique rug, the designer amplified its warm tones with metal details, such as swing-arm wall lights, and wood finishes, including shutters and custom shelving made of brass and reclaimed wood. A contemporary-style upholstered chaise is joined by a nearby library-table desk, another piece that was designed by Dietz. The hallway also has a warm feel, owing to a gallerystyle assemblage of artwork specifically commissioned for the space. Dietz treated the laundry room with a similar eye for detail, particularly in a collage of framed artwork that was drawn by the designer’s husband using his iPhone. “It was nice to be able to incorporate a whimsical element to the space.” 141

Envisioned as a relaxing, elevated suite for a couple visiting family or friends, a guest bedroom makes its debut with a vestibule papered in a small-scale block-print pattern, then segues into a relaxing space with calm off-white walls. The room’s designer, Katie Jackson, established a color palette of off-white, brown, camel, navy, and black, hues which she says “are soothing and provide a timeless foundation for layering art, accessories, and books.” A navy leather
lamp, a cafe-colored chair and ottoman, and the bed’s graphite velvet headboard draw attention with their rich coloration. Explaining that “old pieces come with a story and lend soul and weight to a new build,” Jackson incorporated a number of antiques, including nightstands, a dresser, and coat hook. The vestibule wallpaper was also used in the bathroom, where the designer made a bold statement by painting the cabinetry a dark blue. An antique carved stool stands nearby.

The one room in the house that offers a full view of the nearby mountain, this bedroom was designed by Eric Ross to maximize that view. “By placing the twin beds on either side of the window, it invites the viewer to come closer to the window,” while also helping to make the room seem larger. Inspired by the wooded scenery outside, Ross chose a forest-scene fabric for the room’s drapery, whose blueand-white colorway is echoed in the Turkish rug, antique
transferware, and bedding. White iron beds give the room a time-honored look, as do an antique bedside chest and a gold Louis Phillipe mirror. The adjacent bathroom continues the color theme, with blue-and-white striped wallpaper joining pale blue cabinetry, altogether creating a tranquil oasis. The turned legs of the antique étagère, which is used to hold towels, echoes those of the bedroom ottomans, another connection between the two spaces. 145

Boasting four beds, a living area, a walk-in closet, and two bathrooms, the bunkroom is a far cry from camp-like quarters. “I wanted the space to feel both sophisticated for adult guests but fun for kids too,” says Maggie Griffin, who enveloped the room in woodland colors, particularly a rich, cozy shade of green that she selected for the walls. A bright blue sofa is accessorized with both tigerprint and geometric-patterned throw pillows, an inspired mash-up of patterns that also includes a diamond print, which was used for the coffee table ottoman, and a plaid that covers a pair of upholstered stools. Pattern headlines both bathrooms as well, with one being finished in a blue and teal woodland wallpaper. The beds— two twins on the upper bunk with two queen-size beds down below—are lavishly appointed in beautiful bed linen.
