A COMMON CONVERSATION I’ve been having lately is just how busy this season has been, both at work and in play. It’s a complete 180-degree-turn from where we were in recent years, when meetings were held at the same table as meals, game night and homework time, and “vacation” meant moving from one room to the next. While the world stopped, our design professionals were just ramping up. Pandemic renovations opened the door to a new way of living in Atlanta, one that allowed us to find respite in our own spaces and encouraged us to embrace the slower pace. This month’s home features exemplify the meticulous detail and forward-thinking style our Atlanta design community showcases so that we are able to come home
Inside this 2013 Bath of the Year winner, architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon revamped an outdated primary bathroom into a spa-like retreat. See more at “Bathed in Style” on atlantahomesmag.com
and breathe easy. In Buckhead, Tim Adams & Schilling & Co. transformed a sprawling property with a handsome shingle-style home that complements the surrounding landscape (page 60), while what was supposed to be a singular porch remodel evolved into a whole-home, down-to-the-studs renovation by Helen Davis Hanavich and Blake Segars (page 76). Following suit, Nina Long warmly welcomes us inside her personal home, a complete overhaul that solidified her identity as a designer (page 96). Our bath issue also features four retreat-worthy functional ideas to make your hardworking spaces work that much harder. We hope you’ll find inspiration for your own homes between the pages. Enjoy.

BATH OF THE YEAR
Green Streak LANIER INTERIORS and C. BRANDON INGRAM DESIGN create a monochromatic oasis in this Atlanta bath renovation Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL
WHILE RENOVATING THEIR clients’ Atlanta home, one of the more outof-the-box undertakings for interior designer Lanier Gupton and architect Brandon Ingram was the second-floor primary suite—particularly the bath. “[Brandon] suggested completely swapping the location of the primary bath, closet and bedroom,” says Gupton. “It allowed the primary bath and bedroom to take advantage of the best light and exterior views. We created it as a place for the couple to have a restful retreat from their busy life with three young children.” To take advantage of the privacy afforded by the bath’s private treetop
scenery, a large window—which features French casements for easy opening—serves as the focal point. “We really gathered all the architecture and cabinetry around the room’s one large window,” notes Ingram. Underneath, a luxurious Kohler soaking tub with a cipollino quartzite surround (which matches the countertops) offers a spalike place to relax and “really created the room’s crescendo,” adds Ingram. Leaded glass and antique mirrored armoires “bounce the natural light around the space, which makes it feel larger.” While the clients wanted their primary bath to serve as a tranquil retreat, they specifically requested that it be more

WINNER colorful than a typical all-white bath. To ensconce the room in a sense of serenity, Gupton painted the walls, paneling, cabinetry, mirror frame and valence the same soft sage color (Sherwin-Williams Oyster Bay at 75% strength), using the same hue in the drapery fabric (which can be opened and closed via remote) for a seamless effect. “The warm brass hardware and plumbing were able to really stand out from the contrasting background color,” she adds. “I wanted the bathroom to be about subtle texture variations.” Also providing dimension is the floor tile: a custom design of honed marble with polished keystone detailing, which the team conceptualized with the help of Waterworks’ Jenna McFerrin. Says Gupton, “We wanted to add something a little unique and geometric to the otherwise very traditional feeling in the bathroom.”

BATH OF THE YEAR
Five-Star Style DAVENPORT DESIGNS and GEORGIAN FINE PROPERTIES fashions a resort-worthy bath with calming colors and dimensional details Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL
WHEN DESIGNING A new-build primary bath for a pair of newlyweds (and first-time homeowners), designer Lauren Davenport Imber set out to emulate the relaxing energy of a five-star hotel. “The footprint of the primary bath is rather large, so we knew we needed to create warmth and coziness with the materials selected,” explains Davenport Imber, who worked with builder Stanton Jacobs to bring the clients’ dream bath to life. “The main goal for this space was to create function and beauty that felt like a romantic retreat.” To create a sense of calm, Davenport Imber kept most of the bath’s materials light in color, opting for shades of white in the Carrara marble countertops and white marble

backsplash. To complement the room’s lofty ceiling—which extends a whopping 15 feet high—the designer added a white plaster chandelier to draw the eye up without competing with the surrounding details. Balancing the bath’s clean palette, quiet textures, such as the porcelain floor tile’s mosaic pattern, add easygoing depth to the space. “In designing a bathroom with neutral tones, it’s important to incorporate subtle textures within the material to add dimension,” notes Davenport Imber. She added additional warmth and contrast by selecting an antique wood stain for the cabinetry, which was crafted by Keystone Millworks. Above the vanities, custom mirrors—made through Fred Reed Picture Framing, Inc.— match the cabinetry’s finish for a cohesive look. “Stanton [Jacobs] allowed us to take the reins on all materials selected and executed our vision to a tee,” says Davenport Imber. “It is so important in any new construction or renovation project that the designer and builder have an open line of communication.” 20

DETAILED SYMMETRY AND a contrasting palette of white, black and dark blue infuse this primary bath with a “Santorini-gone-moody feel,” says Studio Entourage’s Jane Hollman, who worked alongside designer Jennelle Derricotte of Specialized Interior Design, architect Linda MacArthur, cabinetry maker Keystone Millworks and builder Michael Ladisic on the Ansley Park renovation. The clients requested a mix of newer, fresh styles that simultaneously paid respects to the original personality of their historic home, which was built in the early 1900s and is
considered to be the oldest home in Atlanta’s Ansley Park neighborhood. One of the bath’s key design elements was an arched motif inspired by portions of the home’s original leaded glass windows “as well as the structure of the house itself,” says MacArthur. Working with fabricator CR Home, the design team repeated this pattern on the floor using black Neolith porcelain, white Hudson marble and Venetian mosaics from Renaissance Tile & Bath. Overhead, “the ceiling does the inverse of this, tapering back on both ends and coving 25

down the center with a special cove trim that was set up for uplighting,” says Hollman. The ceiling’s inky blue color (Sherwin-Williams Sea Serpent) matches the wall of the adjoining entry vestibule and contrasts with the bath’s white marble walls in a mosaic blend. A spacious double shower also takes architectural influence from the home’s original elements, featuring a showstopping circular steel window and marble detailing. Nearby, geometric steel doors lead to a private patio overlooking the Atlanta skyline. “Floating” cabinet details create a seamless effect, as do floor-to-ceiling linen cabinets, which feature cubbies at the base for the homeowners’ pups. “This was one of the most complicated and technical bathrooms I have ever designed,” says Hollman. “There was so much symmetry and pattern that needed to be carefully correlated. It was truly a labor of love between all of us.”

Calm & Composed DESIGN GALLERIA KITCHEN AND BATH STUDIO and MATHEWS FURNITURE + DESIGN refresh a dated primary bath with functional solutions and serene style Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DOMINIQUE WHITE
WHEN AN ATLANTA COUPLE found a home in their dream neighborhood, they knew they would need to remodel as their style was less modern than that of the previous homeowners. When it came to the primary bath, they enlisted the help of kitchen-and-bath designer Mary Kathryn Timoney of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio and interior designer Nancy Appel of Mathews Furniture + Design. “With their active lives, creating a space that was calm and peaceful was the goal for the master bath and bedroom,” says Appel. “Having worked with them on a previous home and also on her mother’s home, I have gotten to know their likes well.” Timoney and Appel focused on updating the layout by improving symmetry and storage while anchoring the space in a serene color palette and elegant touches. The first order of business was removing the dated elements such as the tray ceiling, travertine tile floors, deck-mounted tub and DIY sauna. A pair of vanities

were added to either side of the entrance to create a much-needed sense of balance and offer clever storage solutions that conceal clutter. Recessed medicine cabinets—which are framed to look like wall-mounted mirrors—provide additional storage and electrical plug-ins for toothbrushes and other electronics. A docking drawer provides a place to leave blow dryers or curling irons within easy reach. “Everything has a place to live so the countertops are free of clutter,” says Timoney. Meanwhile, Appel brought in shades of green—the wife’s favorite color—via the quartzite countertops and selected Benjamin Moore’s Rockport Gray for the cabinetry. She also added a striking yet serene focal point with Schumacher’s Chinois Palais Vinyl Panel wallcovering. “While the core elements are all beautiful, I wanted to add something serenely dramatic,” says the designer. “I pulled potential choices, but there was only one option; it had to be this one. It was simply spot on.”

NATURAL SPIRIT
Dallas-based designer DENISE MCGAHA has partnered with WILDWOOD on a new collection of lighting, furniture and home decor. With an appreciation for heritage craftsmanship, McGaha’s designs encompass simplicity and strength, raw materials and refined finishes, and a balance of contemporary living with the reinvention of traditional style. Perhaps the most important part of the collection is how each piece is imbued with McGaha’s kinship with nature. Deeply inspired by time spent at her ranch in Texas, the designer articulates the senses through natural materials, her palette and the textures that appear on each piece. wildwoodhome.com 46

Considered to be the largest office park in Buckhead, the 45-acre PIEDMONT CENTER might also be one of the greenest, with a densely wooded landscape unique for a commercial development along Piedmont Road. Soon, it will add something else to its list of distinguishing features: a new entertainment district named OXTON. With all 14 of the center’s buildings now under the sole ownership of Atlanta-based real estate investment firm THE ARDENT COMPANIES, the time was right to reimagine part of the property, says Ardent’s managing director, MIKE GUYNN. “Piedmont Center has beautiful green spaces and all the other right elements necessary to create something different for Buckhead. The food, beverage and retail district will invigorate the space, offering a true mixed-use environment for
its tenants, neighbors and community.” In partnership with Westbridge and Bridger Properties, Ardent plans to repurpose 35,000 square feet of ground-floor office space into a best-in-class local food and beverage district, whose design will be led by Square Feet Studio. “There will be something for everyone to enjoy morning, noon and night. Oxton will provide a perfect environment for creative operators to enter or expand into the Buckhead market.” Other amenities will include an adjoining courtyard with outdoor seating, an acre of surrounding greenspace, and connectivity to the area’s PATH400 walking trail. Scheduled to break ground in the third quarter this year and slated to open in 2024, Oxton is a development that Guynn believes is long overdue for Buckhead. “While there are great mixed-use destinations in other parts of Metro Atlanta, Buckhead has been largely left out of the fun. This district will truly be the first of its kind in the area.”
Atlanta Luxury Update
Although the luxury residential sector might have been less severely impacted than the rest of the real estate market by recent economic woes, it has not been immune to some of the challenges facing the industry as a whole. In Atlanta, one of the biggest issues currently facing the luxury market is a lack of inventory. Even so, affluent buyers continue to maintain a certain criteria when it comes to buying homes, according to veteran Atlanta real 52
estate agents TRAVIS REED and MICHAEL KRIETHE of HOME LUXURY REAL ESTATE. “Luxury buyers are often looking for ease of transition,” says Reed, whose clientele is currently a mix of both Atlanta-based and out-of-state buyers. “They have less tolerance for inconveniences such as making improvements to the property.” While luxury homebuyers might prefer properties that are move-in ready, they are also drawn to high-end amenities that appear to be rooted in the latest design trends. As for what lies ahead this year in the luxury market, Kriethe is encouraged by what he sees. “Mortgage rates are easing in the jumbo markets, the stock market recovery is making it possible for people to make down payments and there is media attention on the Atlanta housing market. Good things to come!”
Winding through neighborhoods including Ormewood Park, Reynoldstown and Adair Park, the ATLANTA BELTLINE’S SOUTHSIDE TRAIL is getting closer to being fully paved. Construction recently began on a section of the trail extending from Boulevard to Glenwood Avenue, which when finished will connect the Glenwood Park and Grant Park neighborhoods with a paved, multiuse trail.

Naomi Von Habersham WHILE WATCHING AN OLD MOVIE the other night, I was reminded of how far our bathrooms have come over the last century or so. Did you know that as recently as the 1940s, almost half of American households lacked complete indoor plumbing systems? I presume that in many of those homes, a trip to the water closet involved walking outdoors to an outhouse. Yikes! I thank my lucky stars that I was born in an era when indoor plumbing, air-conditioning and antibiotics were the norm and not the exception. Something else I’m grateful for is the invention of the mixer tap. Historically, sinks had separate taps, with one for cold water and the other for hot. If you wanted warm water, you simply turned on both and used the sink basin to mix the water until it was the desired temperature. I cringe, because that doesn’t seem very sanitary. Today, however, we are spoiled with an embarrassment of bathroom riches. There are soaking tubs, steam showers and more types of showerheads than you can shake a stick at. The finishes being used in bathrooms are equally enticing, with all kinds of gorgeous natural stones and woods making lavish appearances. In fact, some of the bathrooms being designed today are so exquisite that they could give the legendary Roman Emperor Nero’s bath a run for its money. With so many options and amenities to choose from, I’m hard-pressed to determine what my dream bathroom might look like, but it would probably be 1920s and ’30s in style, just without the separate basin taps. I’d use black-and-white tile, chrome finishes and Deco-style fixtures. The amenities in my dream bathroom, however, would be full-on 21st-century. I’d love one of those smart mirrors so that I can watch the news while getting ready in the morning, and waterproof speakers in the ceiling of my shower would also be pretty nifty. With so many luxuries to now choose from, it makes a bathroom appointed with little more than a tub, sink, toilet and medicine cabinet seem like a thing of the past.

Channeling inspiration from the coastal Italian city of Rimini, Storico’s YEPPA & CO. excels in enticing fare, cocktails and atmosphere Written by EVAN EDWARDS Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN
EARLIER THIS YEAR, Storico group, the brains behind in-town Italian eateries Storico Fresco, Storico Vino and Forza Storico, debuted their latest concept Yeppa & Co. Located inside Buckhead Village District, guests will feel as though they’ve transported to a lively eatery on the coast of Northern Italy. Designed and built by partners Pietro Gianni, a civil engineer, and Stephen Peterson, an architect, Yeppa & Co. intentionally encourages human interaction via the long and narrow bar and seamless indoor and outdoor dining layout. “Before opening, I had called the experience at Yeppa a bit of a sensory overload, but what we have achieved is actually a very balanced mix of lighting, 56
sound, paint colors, flatware, glassware and more,” says Gianni. To execute an authentic experience, fresh ingredients are flown in from Italy in order to prepare a delectable selection of dishes (think focaccia pizzas and gnocchi con sugo di margherita complete with fresh-made ricotta gnocchi). “It took us about a year to make certain that specific products from the Emilia-Romagna region would arrive to Atlanta in a steady flow,” says Gianni. “Our focaccia, which is made in Rimini, is flash frozen and shipped to us. It’s a very versatile product, extremely stable and can be reheated in minutes.” Additionally, Italian chef Omar Casali (from Maré) and his sous-chef Rebecca

Dallara visit in three-month stints to assist Yeppa’s chef de cuisine Omar Santamaria. After dinner, guests can make their way to Dryver Bar, a Formula Onedriven cocktail bar situated adjacent to the main dining area with a separate entrance. “Gianni was a test-driver for race cars and brings that experience to Atlanta,” says beverage manager Jose Pereiro. “We have designed the space with the feel of being on the racetrack. The cocktail program consists of an elevated and well-crafted cocktail menu with modern culinary techniques that I have learned from my travels, especially to Italy and Mexico.” As for the term itself, “Yeppa is an expression that describes an existential vision,” says Peterson. “It is the ability to live life passionately and intensely. It originated in a particular region in Italy— Romagna—and perfectly expresses hospitality and the joy of living.” yeppaco.com

Promoting sustainability efforts around the city, Midtown’s seafood restaurant LURE collects nearly 150,000 gallons of rainwater from its roof every year to prevent runoff and help eliminate the amount of pollutants washed into local streams (shown above). The rain collected is also used to water all of the plants at the restaurant. lure-atlanta.com
The STORICO group has introduced sustainability efforts throughout all of their restaurants. A few initiatives include: the elimination of plastic and introduction of bamboo disposable to-go containers and flatware, the replacement of HVAC systems with electronic smart thermostats, offering beer and Prosecco on draft to eliminate bottle usage and much more. storico.com FOUNDATION SOCIAL EATERY in Alpharetta purchases vegetables and herbs from employee-owned greenhouses. ENCHANTED BY A Buckhead property’s towering old-growth beech trees, a couple with two teenagers commissioned architect Tim Adams to design a new house for the sprawling site. Clad with cedar shake accented by indigenous granite, his brainchild far exceeds their goals. “This home has a sense of history and soul that transcends time,” says Adams. Indeed, handcrafted wall moldings in a classic yet updated grid pattern adorn the stair hall, which is flooded with natural light from a bank of windows. In fact, natural light pervades the interior, which is only one or two rooms deep, allowing Adams to add windows on multiple sides. “Feeling the light throughout the day makes a tremendous difference,” he says. It also complements the lighter, brighter palette that the owners

envisioned for their new home. Involved early in the project, interior designers Michelle Doughtie and Katelyn Walden Reeves of Schilling & Co. weighed in on finishes and worked closely with their clients to furnish the interior, incorporating newly acquired pieces alongside their client’s existing antiques. Antique paintings adorn the crisp white walls in the stair hall, for instance. And in the dining room, a reproduction chandelier casts a warm glow on an elegant oval table
surrounded by the owners’ existing chairs, which Doughtie had recovered in an updated fabric that complements the floral wallcovering. “It’s like the chef’s kiss,” she says. A contrast to the formal millwork in the front of the house, the private spaces have a more relaxed milieu with open, flowing spaces distinguished by shiplap walls, reclaimed ceiling beams and stone accents. A tiered iron chandelier, for example, calls attention to the lofty beamed ceilings in the family room, which Doughtie furnished with comfortable 65

Adjacent to the wife’s office and an herb garden off the kitchen, she enjoys curling up on the plush sofa with windows overlooking the backyard. When pulled shut, the striped linen sheers, “Create a pillow effect,” says Doughtie. “Sometimes we gather in the smallest spaces, because they feel so cozy, and we wanted to encourage that.” The wife often cooks with fresh herbs she harvests from the garden just outside–one of the many things she adores about the place. “They were so excited to finally move into this home that they had been dreaming about,” says Doughtie. “It was fun helping them to realize their vision.” See Resources, Back of Book.

INTERIOR DESIGNER HELEN DAVIS HANAVICH of Helen Davis Interior Design and architect Blake Segars of T. Bake Segars Architecture have been longtime friends—since childhood, in fact—but the two had never worked together on a project. When Segars was beginning a remodeling job for an Atlanta couple with three young children, he thought Hanavich would be the perfect interior designer for them. One of the best parts of the project was that Segars and Hanavich discovered a couple that wasn’t rushed by a particular deadline and allowed time for the design to come together and evolve in a thoughtful manner. So successful was the ensuing collaboration that what originated as the addition of a back porch evolved into a years-long, wholehouse renovation and redecoration. In fact, it was the clients’ knowledge of design and exquisite taste that allowed Hanavich to push the envelope and explore unexpected colors and fabric combinations.

“In all of my designs I want to be true to the neighborhood, true to the house and respectful of the architect who came before me.” —T. Blake Segars
In both the main spaces and upstairs private quarters, the resulting mix is both familiar, yet unexpected. Blue-and-white moments that appear throughout the house, for example, can be described as traditional, but not. The colors grace a verdant grasscloth in the dining room, a starry wallpaper on the ceiling in another, and on a handpainted mural in the primary bath. In the family room, a mélange of disparate textile patterns—seven and counting—in various colors were layered over time, not in one fell swoop. For Segars, nimbly melding the past and present was paramount. “In all of my designs I want to be true to the neighborhood, true to the house and respectful of the architect who came before me,” he says. Segars’ respect and reverence for the original structure was so much so that visitors often wonder what was

done to the house, if anything at all. “If only one knew that every single wall in this house was opened up,” he jokes. “There’s also the pride in that visitors have no idea that every single thing—from the floors, walls, paneling, every single doorknob and hardware—is brand new.” In the end, it was the owner’s trust in the process—and her collaborators—that made the renovation and redecoration a success. “She knew my vision and she just let me run with it,” says Segars of the wife’s support. And Hanavich wholeheartedly concurs: “It ended up just being the most wonderful experience.” See Resources, Back of Book

S
SHORTLY AFTER BUYING their 1930s-era brick Georgian in Collier Hills, Taylor and Nina Long embarked on a room-by-room renovation. An interior designer with Mathews Furniture + Design, Nina was ecstatic to finally create an environment that truly represented her and her husband’s classic yet comfortable aesthetic. “I couldn’t wait to put my stamp on the house,” she says. For a blank slate, Long first had the walls throughout painted in a warm shade of white and then, starting with the powder room, proceeded to renovate the bathrooms one-by-one. When they accomplished that mission, they set their sights on the kitchen, incorporating cabinetry and veiny,
honed statuary marble countertops. Most dramatically, they opened the space to the dining room, allowing Long to gaze at the adjacent space’s mural wallcovering while she cooks. “It makes me so happy,” she says. “It’s like a piece of art.” Accented by green-painted trim, the wallcovering depicts scenes of life in Italy—a nod to Long’s heritage. It’s a lush backdrop for a painted table and velvet upholstered chairs underneath an ornate glass bead-adorned brass chandelier— all French reproductions. “Wallpaper is a unique way to add character and the options are endless.” Indeed, Long incorporated them into key areas throughout the interior. an antique gilded mirror, a patterned wallcovering with a hand-blocked pattern enlivens the firstfloor powder room. A blue-and-white striped wallcovering likewise establishes a distinct mood in their 18-month-old son Collier’s nursery. “I wanted it to be fun and unconventional, not like your typical baby boy room,” she says. The palette flows into the primary bedroom, which has blue walls punctuated by light patterned floral drapery and colorful bedding.
Meanwhile, a neutral grasscloth wallcovering juxtaposes the Carrara marble countertops in the en suite bathroom, which includes a double vanity and a spa-like marble shower. While Long established the general design direction and a foundation for each room, she was in no rush to acquire items simply to finish a space. Instead, she left room for serendipitous discoveries, such as the Slim Aarons vintage color photo of Mick Jagger that now hangs over the 103

living room sofa and the antique chest that perfectly occupies a niche in the front foyer. The approach “makes the house feel collected,” something that she learned from longtime design partner and mentor Don Easterling. “It took many years to come into my own style, and for my own home, it really took me longer to make decisions,” says Nina. “It’s nice having someone I not only completely trust, but look up to, to bounce ideas off of. for his blessing before pulling the trigger.” Today, the couple is blissfully happy in their newly renovated abode. And while Long has been designing interiors for 15 years, it’s only through designing her own home that she’s figured out her signature style—traditional yet updated, elegant yet comfortable. “This is a reflection of me,” she says. “I’ve finally figured out who I am as a designer.” See Resources, Back of Book.
