ESCAPE! WHILE THAT WORD has become relative the last 12 months—as everything from vacations to sporting events and dining out has dramatically evolved—our June “Lakes & Escapes” issue serves as a reminder that indulging in the vacation mindset, however briefly, has never been more important when experiencing challenging times. While this issue features three impeccably designed lakefront retreats by talents such as Ryan and Nancy Duffey (page 60), The Design Atelier and Pritchett + Dixon (page 74) and Carolyn Malone and Frances Zook (page 92), we also asked Style Editor Clinton Smith to canvas local tastemakers who channel the idea of escape through travel-inspired cocktails, playlists designed for dancing and ingredients for a proper picnic (page 11). Speaking of respite, we are thrilled this month to

SUMMER STYLE GUIDE
Summer ITINERARY
A LITTLE OVER A YEAR since the very first coronavirus lockdown and lingering restrictions, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and many Atlantans are eager to connect again and find the right balance. “I look forward to being reunited with friends and neighbors,” says noted design author and ThePeakofChic.com founder Jennifer Boles. “I’m hoping to rekindle an active social life by having guests over often for drinks, dinner and perhaps even dancing!” While some may be two-stepping or dancing the Charleston, others are headed that way—literally—equally as happy to stick to their weekend getaway plans, with nightlife being replaced by wildlife. “We love the Lowcountry, Charleston and surrounding area,” says interior designer Jackye Lanham. “We have a home on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, that we love, including the mosquitoes, the heat and alligators.” For architectural designer Joel Kelly, his summer weekends are about juggling his bustling city life Monday through Friday with a bucolic country elixir near Madison, Georgia. “I’ll be sitting by the fire alongside my Airstream with a few fireflies, free from the constant hum of Atlanta.”

EVERYONE AGREES THAT al fresco dining is now de rigueur for summer 2021, and not only are folks making the most of it, they’re fully embracing the season—humidity and all. “I love a good picnic with Lowcountry boils, Charleston-style pickled shrimp, fresh lobster and garden vegetables,” says interiors super-stylist Eleanor Roper. “French-inspired al fresco dinners or lazy lunches with lots of fresh herbs and flowers that highlight the season seems perfect to moi!” Ooh-la-la, indeed. But whether inside or out, don’t forget manners—they’re perennial too. Lanham is bedecking her tables with coin silver, antique rummers, creamware and vintage linens with hand-sewn, heavy monograms. Simply timeless! When designer Liz Williams isn’t orchestrating an at-home get-together and is visiting others, she always has a stylish gift in mind for her host or hostess. Two of her current go-to favorites include a bar accessory by Match Pewter or a Simon Pearce bud vase, both available at Erika Reade Ltd.

DINNER TIME WHETHER YOU’RE IN TOWN, at the lake, in the mountains or at the beach, fresh and seasonal ingredients are the order of the day. At Roper’s table, look for caprese salad, grilled zucchini, asparagus and other summer vegetables, and always a plate of tea-style tomato-and-cucumber sandwiches swathed with Duke’s Mayonnaise. Back in Buckhead, Boles is serving classic, comforting and refreshing dishes, such as cold cucumber soup, tomato aspic, rice salad, poached chicken and salmon. Plus dessert: a lemon mousse or tart to end the meal. Adds Boles: “The entire menu can be made ahead of time, meaning less chaos in the kitchen during the party.” Wise words, indeed. Ansley Atlanta real estate agent Tucker Sarkisian’s favorite quarantine activity was taking cooking classes via Zoom. She looks forward to celebrating those discoveries with “whatever I’ve found at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market.” As for designer Kelly Wolf Anthony and her restaurateur husband Justin Anthony, they’re looking forward to poolside barbecues with peri-peri chicken, lamb chops, ribeye and Wagyu steaks, along with corn on the cob and a mix of grilled vegetables. For Joel Kelly’s country weekends, look for marshmallows on a stick with chili-pepper chocolate, accompanied by fine Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whisky. “While not the typical country fare, it never hurts to bring a bit of culture to the campfire,” says Kelly. Designer Susan Ferrier is taking more of a theatrical approach. “I hope to be entertaining across a generous table with bowls and plates of collected pieces that spark conversation and creative thought,” she says. “I’m looking to plan a dinner with good wine and fresh food that pauses in between courses long enough to space the meal over a segmented span of time marked by a change in the music played.”

WHILE SETTING AN ELEGANT TABLE isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, more casual get-togethers are on the horizon too. Whether a picnic, potluck or proper sit-down, it’s all about the mix and how you use cherished things. “I always love the look of a collected table with unique pieces that have been acquired over the years,” says designer Yvonne McFadden. “They’re typically a great conversation starter when entertaining, and also a wonderful way to reminisce on past travels.” Others concur with the collected approach. “Lately, I’ve been drawn to hand-painted French faience plates and serving pieces, which are so charming and delightful,” says Boles. For designer Beth Webb, splitting her time between Buckhead and Brays Island, South Carolina, it’s about mixing custom pieces with those that are readily available. “I’ve just had a new tablecloth made for the outdoor dining table in Schumacher’s Rubia Embroidery and paired it with Juliska’s Bamboo Flatware and the Montecito Tray from our collection with Arteriors,” says Webb. “It makes for a very fresh tabletop. I have many pieces from Amanda Lindroth for vases, and use her glassware for both drinking glasses and votives.” Williams’ favorite tumbler at the moment is the Henri design from Hudson Grace. Looking to the past can also offer newfound inspiration. “I’ve long been obsessed with sterling pieces,” says Sarkisian. “In my early 20s, Beverly Bremer told me to use my sterling flatware daily and to ‘throw it right in the dishwasher.’ I’ve heeded that and continued to collect pieces.” Sarkisian’s passion accelerated during the pandemic when dreaming about entertaining. “I acquired some sterling sherbet cups and can’t wait to try using them as part of a tablescape as flower vessels.”

IN FULL Bloom WHEN IT COMES TO FLOWERS, Williams sticks to striking, yet simple statement-making centerpieces, but adds something special for every guest. “Typically, I have a potted hydrangea or geranium for the center, and then add small vases of cut flowers at each place at the table,” she says. As serial entertainers, the Anthonys stick with local flowers: “We love using simple elegant white hydrangea picked from our gardens,” adds the duo. Lanham adorns her collection of handblown antique decanters and flasks with ferns popping out from the garden. McFadden takes a similar approach, but with a touch of added flair: “Lately, I’ve been foraging flowers and branches from my backyard. I like to throw in thyme and rosemary as well for it has a lovely drape and captivating herbal aroma.” When she’s at her second home in rural South Carolina’s Lowcountry and local resources are scarce, Webb looks West for a prompt and direct delivery. “Since we are a bit remote, I order directly from Rose Story Farm in California, which has the most glorious old-world roses—more than 130 cultivated varieties,” says Webb. “All of which have an incredible scent.”
NO SUMMER DINNER PARTY IS COMPLETE WITHOUT… “Champagne and caviar.” –The Anthonys “A dessert with fruit! NO PORCH PARTY IS COMPLETE without a perfect place to perch. “We just bought the Amalfi round back armchairs from Janus et Cie,” says Lanham. “They’re perfect for our circa 1925 home in Atlanta.” Ferrier is looking to exotic locales for outdoor adornment. “I brought home many Indian block print tablecloths and umbrellas from my trips there over the last couple of years,” she says. “Indian designs brilliantly layer pattern and color so I overindulged and hope that I will have the opportunity to use them all summer.” For Boles, a few carefully selected accents can make a big impact. “Rose Cumming’s Sabu print is currently at the top of my summer wish list,” she says. “The animal print offers a snappy alternative to the typical striped or tropical patterned outdoor fabrics.” Williams is also all about patterns at the moment: “I love all of the Peter Fasano print options at Ainsworth-Noah that can be printed on outdoor fabric.” For the Anthonys, Holly Hunt’s outdoor collection is inspiring, particularly the sleek Scarab Lounge Chair. “It’s so architectural and sculptural,” says Kelly.

TEED UP ALABAMA’S LAKE MARTIN will soon be home to a new 18-hole Coore & Crenshaw golf course and luxury residential development The Heritage. Russell Lands, which owns, manages and develops real estate in the area, has allocated 1,500 acres on 12 miles of shoreline to the project. “It’s some of the most primo lakefront property on Lake Martin,” says Russell Lands Vice President Roger Holliday. The move comes, in part, since the company’s existing Willow Point Golf & Country Club, one of the nation’s premier lakeside golf courses, is near capacity. “It screams the need for more golf [on the lake],” explains Holliday. Groundbreaking for the course, designed by famed architect Bill Coore and golf legend Ben Crenshaw, is underway. The project marks the duo’s first course in the state. “Bill said to me, ‘Our plan is to make this

CREATIVE COURTYARDS
Landscape designer MARCIA WEBER of Gardens to Love thoughtfully crafts courtyard gardens that yield great dividends Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON
Hardscape elements, such as brick and stone, are carefully considered in courtyard gardens where boxwood hedges and other plantings frame the borders. below Creeping fig climbs the brick walls in a courtyard garden designed by Marcia Weber.
ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: What makes courtyard gardens so enticing? MARCIA WEBER: The space in a courtyard is compacted so they’re intimate. Also, courtyards are defined spaces with walls, so there should always be something special to look at; special details for your eye to land on. Details always matter, but they’re especially important in courtyard gardens. AH&L: What are some of your favorite special points of interest in a courtyard garden? MW: I love to include art. From contemporary sculptures by metalsmith Corrina Sephora Mensoff, to interesting pots and garden antiques, art enhances a courtyard garden and gives it depth, dimension and interest. AH&L: What makes designing courtyard gardens different from other landscape projects? MW: There are many considerations. Soil pH and composition, light and drainage are some obvious elements, but things such as leaching from mortar leaks can be
overlooked. Additionally, one of the most interesting aspects of a courtyard garden is how it will be perceived and used. For example, sometimes the first thought is not how it will appear as visitors enter it, rather, how it will be viewed from an upstairs window or in early morning light. AH&L: What are some of your favorite plants to include in these kinds of gardens? MW: Native azaleas are among my favorite plants. They have a beautiful form, a marvelous scent, they don’t grow too large and they have beautiful fall color—all perfect for courtyards. Herbs are wonderful too, because one can always take a pinch and have a fresh ingredient in any dish. AH&L: What advice do you have for homeowners looking to make improvements to an existing courtyard? MW: As a garden ages, it needs to be edited. Some plants can be pruned, but others need to be replaced so that the right atmosphere can be created and the garden can thrive and grow. 25

COMBINE TRADITIONAL ITALIAN wines and savory pairings with a playful yet sophisticated ambiance and you have Storico Vino, the hot new wine bar that hit Buckhead Village in March. Located in the former Corso Coffee space, the wine bar— led by Michael Patrick, Pietro Gianni and Stephen Peterson, the energetic team behind Atlanta’s beloved Storico Fresco and Forza Storico—started as a virtual shop before opening the doors to its first brick-and-mortar location. With rich red accents, eclectic artwork and a gracious outdoor patio, Storico Vino emulates a laid-back style that’s equal parts suave and stylish. “The design is very much about rules without rules,” says Gianni. “It’s unexpected. There is something at its base that is sexy in nature.” Indeed, when dining at Storico Vino, one is easily transformed into their most posh personality. A selection of spirits are also available, and Iocally sourced delights include shareable small plates and pasta dishes. Or, skip the snacks altogether and cheers with something from the extensive list of Italian wines by the bottle or by the glass. Regardless of the selection, Storico Vino encourages visitors to take a moment to relax and do as the Italians do. Patrick says, “We hope guests leave Storico Vino with a feeling of having spent two hours in Venice, absorbing the music and the amazing vibes, surrounded by people who want to take a break from everyday life and be projected into ‘La Dolce Vita.’” storico.com

Naomi Von Habersham OF ALL THE PITHY sayings that have appeared on needlepoint pillows through the years, the one that suits me best is “Born to Shop.” When I was 6 years old, I used to beg my mother to take me to the neighborhood five-and-dime, where the bins of novelties and notions were like manna from heaven to me. By the time I was a teenager, I was so enamored with the local dress shop that I got an afterschool job there, where I would spend entire paychecks on clothing and accessories. But it wasn’t until early adulthood when I discovered what would become my forever happy place: Neiman Marcus. Back in the 1980s and 90s, it wasn’t uncommon for me to visit the retailer twice, sometimes even three times, a week! And before you say, “Naomi, I think you have a shopping addiction,” I should explain that more often than not, I simply went to window shop. Just to walk among the gorgeous merchandise was satisfying enough for me. But like so many other activities during the pandemic, my shopping hobby was severely curtailed. Yes, there was online shopping, which, of course, was very helpful when we were all sheltering in place, but it wasn’t nearly as gratifying as shopping inside a brick-and-mortar store. When I shop, I want to be able to touch the merchandise. I want to be able to try on clothes in a dressing room so that I can avoid returns. I want that sense of discovery that comes with perusing a store’s goods. And now, thanks to my vaccination, I’m venturing out once again and revisiting all of my old shopping haunts. If I may, I would encourage you to do the same. See what your local bookseller has to offer, or stop by your favorite home accessories shop and pick up a few things for your next dinner party. Now that we’re out and about, let’s make a real effort to support all of our local businesses. Life is more interesting if we have places to go, people to see and things to buy.

ABOUT CLOUDLAND STATION
ABOUT THE SHOWCOTTAGE
This 500-acre development features homesites nestled among the valleys and rolling hills of Northwest Georgia. A majority of Cloudland Station’s acreage has been placed in conservation and will never be developed. Enhancements include an infinity edge pool, outdoor amphitheater, community gardens, orchards, a farm stand and multiple pavilions with communal firepits for gathering and miles of hiking and walking trails. The recreation barn invites unplugged activities while the 3-acre Lake Angela beckons the young and young-at-heart with canoes, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing. The Courtyards at Mill Creek is the community’s newest neighborhood and location of the 2021 Designer Showcottage. The first of five cottages planned is appropriately named The Mountain Laurel for the indigenous flowering evergreen. Cloudland Station is located two hours from Atlanta and just 17 minutes from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
John Tatum, developer of Cloudland Station, and Coleman Mills, architectural designer with Harrison Design, collaborated to produce the 2021 Designer Showcottage. Mills’ design for the cottage was inspired by Tatum’s vision for authentic design that recalls the past without attempting to replicate it. “There’s a humility to both the cottage structure and overarching concept of Cloudland Station that I find incredibly refreshing,” says Mills. Affectionately named “The Mountain Laurel,” the compact cottage evokes the charm of an early American garden cottage where indoor and outdoor living spaces effortlessly blend. Gathering happens naturally, whether in the soaring 24-foot-high living room or on the locally quarried stone benches in the fragrant garden courtyard. With just 1,620 square feet of conditioned space, The Mountain Laurel lives large and comfortably sleeps 11 people within a variety of lofts, nap nooks and traditional bedrooms.

A NOTE FROM CLOUDLAND STATION’S FOUNDER Fifteen years ago, I had a crazy idea born from a simple passion: As a father, I wanted my children to experience the things that made my childhood special and memorable. As my wife, Angie, and I watched the children grow up in our fast-paced world, we yearned to find moments that made time stand still. And not only for our family, but also for friends who desired something similar. Thus, Cloudland Station was born. From baiting your first hook with your child to a walk in the woods, simple things invite connection. At Cloudland Station, our mission is to foster beautiful, healthy and connected living. Our mountain and valley landscape is a beautiful canvas splashed with nature, from birds to bees and flowers and trees. The open air invites hiking, swimming and caring for the land. Our community has grown to nearly 70 families over these 15 years. As the community grows, we expand what it means to embrace the simple things in life. We are always thrilled to discover new opportunities for enjoying life in this beautiful setting. Whether it is a newfound hobby of a neighbor or an idea that sparks inspiration for an event or amenity yet to be developed, these connections are priceless connections. Cloudland Station began as my passion project and has grown to become the love of the community and its members who have made a home here and who contribute to its endless possibilities. Our hope here is to create a place that welcomes the building of a legacy with loved ones. When you walk beyond our gates, we hope that you exhale and enjoy this beautiful oasis. We look forward to your visit and hope you find inspiration here in the serenity that is Cloudland Station.

ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY Make-A-Wish of Georgia grants wishes to children with critical conditions to provide hope, strength and joy. Wishes are medicine and can help children face treatment with a renewed commitment. Additionally, wishes give children, their parents and others a chance to enjoy a special time together. For nearly 40 years, Make-A-Wish has been granting life-changing wishes for children and families. Make-AWish believes that a wish experience can be a gamechanger for a child with a critical illness, and this belief guides everything they do. These wishes are more than just a nice thing or gifts, and they impact everyone involved—wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to face their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic, and others might realize all they can offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.

An Atlanta native, Alison has worked in interior design since 1996, joining her mother, Cheryl Womack, who launched the family’s boutique design firm in 1985. Over three decades, the firm has cemented its reputation for elegant, refined and inviting spaces that reflect the warmth, interests and priorities of each client.
With 15 years of experience in the architecture and design industry, Amanda Hickam opened Harper Harris Design Studio in 2019. The firm’s style is elegant with an edge while emphasizing functionality. Mixing contemporary, traditional and unexpected elements creates an intriguing tension in the spaces they design. The firm offers both residential and interior design services, which allows for a cohesive design, clear communication and seamless projects.
Hope Austin Interiors, LLC is a full-service residential design firm based in Atlanta. Austin’s passion for her craft began in 2006 after an introduction by her motherin-law to her first job in the industry at the Brunschwig and Fils showroom. She continued her pursuit of design while working with various design firms and organizations such as Schumacher, Lee Jofa and Kravet. Experienced in both sides of the business, Austin ventured from the showroom to create her own brand, Hope Austin Interiors.
Alison has participated in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Southeastern Designer Showhouse, Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse and Cashiers Designer Showhouse, the Atlanta Symphony Associates Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, and also designed a vignette for the Cathedral Antiques Show. Alison’s designs have been featured in numerous publications, including Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, Atlanta Magazine’s HOME, Traditional Home, and Better Homes & Gardens. She has contributed to design blogs, including Splendid Sass and The Artful Lifestyle by Huff Harrington. TO ESCAPE THE HECTIC PACE of work and city life, an active Atlanta couple have relished peaceful weekends along the shores of Lake Burton for many years. But as their four children grew from young boys to grown men, space was becoming tight in their modest cottage. While envisioning a new home on their property, they came to know the work of architect J. Ryan Duffey through his numerous projects dotting the lake, admiring his work’s deferential relationship to the environment. It’s a sensibility immediately evident upon approach to their recently completed lake home. A winding gravel road gives way to reveal an unassuming stone structure. “The site very much dictated the design, so there’s almost this sense that we quarried the hillside and nestled the house in,” says Duffey. “That called for a space where you want to have a very ‘solid’ feeling, prompting us to use limestone on the front elevation to anchor the home into the site.” 63
4/28/21 12:38 PM
Tailor Made
Duffey likens the home’s front facade to that of an English cottage, an aesthetic enhanced by a charming walled courtyard designed by landscape designer Jeremy Smearman. Their efforts are all part of a thoughtfully devised experience for guests. “The idea was to pull you into this little courtyard that feels cozy and intimate, and then as you walk through the front door, you can’t help but feel sucked into the house and treated to this explosive view of the water,” explains Duffey. The latter is courtesy of 11-foot floor-to-ceiling windows that run the length of the home’s rear and offer a delicate and more airy counterpoint to the limestone-clad front entrance. Always keeping the focus to what mattered most—gathering with family and friends—Duffey, along with his wife, Nancy, an interior designer whom the couple also hired onto the project, got creative to ensure maximum interaction. While placing the kitchen adjacent to the enclosed side porch ticked the homeowners’ box for easy entertaining, the duo opted to push the envelope, designing steel-and-glass pocket doors, and most impressive of all—a steel-and-glass window above the island separating the two spaces that can be fully recessed into the ceiling with the touch of a button, allowing for seamless integration of the porch to the kitchen and other living spaces beyond. 64
above The kitchen’s custom taupe-gray cabinetry by Phoenix Millworks plays up the home’s calm and airy appeal. Light pendants from Visual Comfort hang over the central island and Serena & Lily barstools offer a casual spot for quick meals. opposite To accommodate the wife’s taller stature, the cabinets were fabricated in a custom height. They’re topped with black soapstone for durability.

As the homeowners frequently entertain between the kitchen and porch, the Duffeys were keen to provide them with a seamless experience. Their solution was pocket doors as well as a steel-and-glass window above of the island that can be fully recessed into the ceiling. All of the home’s steel windows and doors were sourced from RG Ironworks.

Master Mix
Interior designer Nancy Duffey selected a range of indooroutdoor fabrics to ensure the furnishings could hold up to lake life. She comfortably mixed styles in the living room, such as an antique console from South of Market with a more modern coffee table from Palecek. The fireplace by Ryan Duffey offers a similar juxtaposition with traditional stacks of stone mingling with a contemporary concrete surround.

“IN THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX, THE HOME FEELS EVERY BIT AS WARM AND WELCOMING AS [THE HOMEOWNERS] ARE.”—NANCY DUFFEY
To complement the home’s high ceilings and tactile materials, Nancy Duffey outfitted the interiors with clean lines and a neutral palette punctuated with youthful pops of color, following the homeowners’ “fresh and bright” directive. “They didn’t want that typical dark, rustic cabin you find on the lake,” she says. “In thinking outside the box, the home feels every bit as warm and welcoming as they are.” With the lake ultimately the star of the show, Smearman finessed the site’s topography by terracing the backyard. This eliminated the need for rails, providing unencumbered views. Similarly, he worked with Ryan Duffey to step the terrace down from the home’s main living level. “This ensures you’re not looking at the view through the backs of patio furniture. It makes the vista more dramatic and less cluttered,” explains Smearman. No detail was too small or idea too big, a credit to the design team’s collaborative and forward-thinking approach, notes Ryan Duffey. “This was the family’s legacy project and we hope they enjoy it for generations to come.” See Resources, Back of Book. 70

A YEARS-LONG SEARCH led an Atlanta couple to a Lake Burton property with coveted views of Charlie Mountain. The lot presented challenges—it was steep and there were Georgia Power setbacks to contend with—but architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon of Pritchett + Dixon did a seemingly effortless job designing a home that maximizes the property and lends the perfect destination for the family to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Pritchett, who grew up around Lake Burton, and Dixon drew inspiration from classic lake home style. “We like everything to have a sense of place and a strong connection to the outside,” says Pritchett. He and Dixon wove natural materials into the home, like stones from nearby North Carolina for the living room fireplace and timbers from a local sawmill—elements that are ever-present reminders that you’re in a Lake Burton home. To emphasize the vista, a 16-foot lakefront window invites the outdoors inside.

In the Mix

Interior designers Melanie Millner and Katie Moorhouse of The Design Atelier were tasked with making the house feel sophisticated yet comfortable within the voluminous space. Their starting point: the earth tone palette of blues, creams, taupes and grays. “We were looking out the window and said the view here is just incredible,” says Moorhouse. “We took what was outside the windows and brought it in.” Aside from the earthy hues, durability was paramount for Millner and Moorhouse when selecting the furnishings. The living room sofa and window seat—a favorite spot of the family’s St. Bernard—were upholstered in an indoor-outdoor fabric so it can withstand years of heavy use. The chairs swivel so that one can go from blissful lake scenery to watching the game on TV. Another key element was the use of breakaway spaces throughout the home. The house plays host to groups, but the nooks that the designers and architects created make it easy for individuals to escape for a bit of solitude. In addition to the window seats, a loft with chaise lounges overlooks the lake, while downstairs guest corridors house separate bedrooms and a bunk room, game room and living room. While many lake houses have stunning vistas, this one is positioned in such a way that it feels like an island—one that belongs to this family alone. The sunrise views are fantastic, says Moorhouse, and when you look out over the lake toward Charlie Mountain, with no other land in sight, you almost feel like you’re floating. See Resources, Back of Book. 87

WALKING THE PROPERTY for the first time, architect Frances Flautt Zook knew it was something special—hilly, forested and with enough lakefront acreage to build a home right on the water. Her clients had been vacationing there for a few years in a house that once stood on the site. When their children left the nest, they assembled an accomplished team that included Zook, interior designer Carolyn Malone and Charles Moore Builders to build a new retreat for their next chapter. The resulting masterpiece features exposed stone walls, dark siding and a cedar shake roof. Columns made from local locust trees hold up the front porch, where a tall steel-framed glass door highlights a breathtaking view of the lake through the living room windows. “The house is all about the lake, so it was important to capture that moment,” explains Zook. “A lake view is relaxing, even more so during a pandemic.” Besides, the cross breezes are out of this world, the architect adds, noting that there are few bothersome insects at Lake Burton. The black metal window frames juxtapose the living room’s rough-hewn stone walls and reclaimed ceiling beams. “The idea is that this was an old house with modern additions,” says Zook. 95
4/29/21 9:26 AM
The furnishings also lean in a more modern direction, such as the channel-tufted leather sofa in the living room. And just across the threshold in the bright and airy kitchen, a quartet of linen-covered chairs surround a vintage bench in front of an ultracontemporary white fireplace mantel flanked with steel-lined firewood containers. Clad with the same textural plaster as the walls, the minimalist range hood likewise speaks in a modern dialect, contrasting the natural white oak plank cabinetry and concrete countertops. “The plaster changes color throughout the day, and that variation is really interesting,” says Malone, comparing it to the stone walls. “It feels thick and sturdy.” The quiet palette flows into the first-floor master bedroom, where a dark gray four-poster bed gently contrasts the light shiplap walls. Providing soft illumination, an oversize paper lantern by Noguchi calls attention to the high wood-beamed ceilings. “It felt natural and comfortable,” says Malone. As did the project itself, coming together little by little over time until every detail was perfect. Shortly after the owners finally saw the outcome, they phoned the designers to express their appreciation. “They loved the house,” says Malone. “It means so much when a client tells you that.” See Resources, Back of Book. 96

SEASIDE CELEBRATION
With sparkling seas, lively marine life and sun-kissed hideaways, Key Largo encourages visitors to lean into Florida’s sunshine state of mind Written by LAUREN IVERSON A QUICK HOUR’S DRIVE from the Miami International airport down the Florida Keys Scenic Highway leads to warm and sunny Key Largo, the first and northernmost of the popular set of islands. Though its southwestern counterpart, Key West, gets a lot of the hype, the unparalleled beauty of Key Largo—with its crystal-clear waters, nature preserves and seaside sanctuary Playa Largo Resort & Spa—encourages guests to embrace the laid-back charm of island living. Located on 14.5 private beachfront acres, Playa Largo Resort & Spa reflects Southern hospitality roots with Ameri-Caribbean 110
style. Stay in accommodations ranging from luxury rooms to private bungalows, or check out the resort’s newly opened Ocean Residences—an enclave of private luxury homes overlooking the Atlantic—which allow access to resort amenities with the added benefits of additional space and privacy. With a backdrop of sparkling blue seas at every turn, the resort amenities are second to none. Take a dip in the freshwater pool, or indulge in a treatment with Florida’s indigenous ingredients at the resort spa. Every evening at sundown, head to the resort’s white sand beach for the Eventide Celebration, where guests are asked to write their worries on a piece of paper that’s then placed on a floating buoy, lit on fire and set off to sea. Key Largo is home to an array of attractions that provide special glimpses into the world of seaside living. The town is frequently referred to as the diving capital of the world, thanks to conservation efforts that began in 1960 with the creation of the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

In addition to spotting the colorful coral and fish, marine-life lovers can gear up and head underwater to explore sights like the sunken Spiegel Grove Navy ship and the bronzed statue of the Christ of the Abyss, which sits so close to the water’s surface that it can be viewed by divers and snorkelers alike. On-site at the resort, guests can walk to Caribbean Watersports to take advantage of activities including parasailing, snorkeling and raft-led eco tours, where a nature guide navigates you through mangrove forests, old Native American canoe trails and more. Keep your eyes peeled for great white herons, bald eagles, dolphins and curious manatees, who often come right up to the raft to say a friendly hello. Visitors should also plan a stop at the Keys’ only brewery and distillery, Islamorada Brewery & Distillery, for a boozy afternoon sampling unique beers and spirits. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, the Florida fare is a seafood-lover’s dream. Dine at the resort’s Sand Bar or Sol by the Sea for refreshing cocktails and coastal cuisine, or head slightly south to Robbie’s of Islamorada, where you can enjoy a bayside lunch at the Hungry Tarpon before handfeeding bait fish to the massive tarpons that swim just below the surface. If you spent the day deep-sea fishing, bring your catch to Skippers Dockside where they will cook it up and serve it for dinner. It doesn’t get fresher than that.

BIG-SKY BEAUTY
Far from roughing it, the great outdoors is served on a silver platter at Montana’s plush, panoramic resort, Paws Up Written by ELIZABETH RALLS
CLEAR SKIES, POSTCARD VIEWS and wide-open wilderness: the unspoiled beauty of Montana is as calming as it is soul-quenching. But beyond the stillness of the land, a veritable sense of adventure awaits just 35 minutes from Missoula at the 37,000-acre working dude ranch Paws Up. Here, 10 miles of the Blackfoot River flow through the family-owned ranch; Black Angus cows roam the pastures; and resident elk and deer are some of your closest 112
neighbors. Add in 100 miles of trails through pristine, largely undeveloped land, and Paws Up skews more towards the setting of a national park, but in a private, posh (and all-inclusive) environment. Rustic luxury reveals itself at every turn. Nicknamed “the last best resort,” Paws Up lives up to the hype through on-brand culinary sophistication: think a resident S’moreologist delivering an over-the-top fireside dessert experience; a former The
French Laundry chef adding unusual twists like huckleberries picked from surrounding mountains to a Kobe beef steak entrée; and a Chuck Wagon Dude Ranch experience, which includes a scenic ride via horsedrawn wagon and a campfire meal cooked before your eyes. Everyone from city slickers to screenprone adolescents will reclaim their imaginations through resort-unique offerings like Cow Croquet, horse-whispering and

go-karting, while dude-ranch specialties such as fly-fishing, rafting, sporting clays and ATV tours create meaningful, memorymaking adventures—and deepen connections to the land, and each other. A pioneer of the “glamping” phenomenon, the resort boasts six luxury tented camps in various locations that cater to families, couples and groups. Featuring a central dining pavilion, the safari-style camps feature art-adorned walls, fine linens, plumbing, air conditioning, heated floors, and, most importantly: a camp butler. While all tent camps are available for buyouts, some guests choose to split their stay between the camp and its array of luxury homes or estates. Big Timber Homes are available in three sizes and some accommodate as many as eight guests while Wilderness Estates are three-bedroom lodges with a great room and vaulted ceiling, chef’s kitchen, game room and three master suites. (Both options include use of a personal Lexus vehicle on-site.) Embracing the grittiness of the great outdoors from these accommodations is easy; washers and dryers make post-adventure cleaning a breeze, while generous porches offer a front-row seat to nothing but nature, stillness and roaming wildlife. Westward, ho!

MOUNTAIN SPLENDOR
One of the South’s most romantic inns, The Swag masterfully combines rustic and chic with peaceful hideaways, hiking and natural beauty Written by ANN YUNGMEYER

VEILED IN A STAND OF TREES, “Roger’s Hideaway” perches at the edge of an expansive green bald known as Gooseberry Knob, a short walk from the high alpine lodge and cabins of The Swag in Waynesville, North Carolina. The hidden viewpoint holds two log chairs and a placard marking distant peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains—Mount Mitchell, Mount Pisgah, Cold Mountain and others. A majestic spot to admire the scenery or watch the sunrise, the rustic outpost is one of many special corners of repose created by The Swag’s original owners Deener and Dan Matthews. Nearly 40 years ago, the Matthews turned their unique family retreat at 5,000-feet elevation into a luxury inn that continues—with new proprietors Annie and David Colquitt at the helm—to offer an exquisite mountain getaway. Guests enjoy an amenityfilled, all-inclusive stay with delightful cuisine and well-appointed rooms, most with woodburning fireplaces. Just out the door, hiking trails lead into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Colquitts, who purchased The Swag in 2018, have made recent enhancements infusing fresh vitality while preserving the inn’s mountain character and genial ambiance. “It’s important that

we stay true to the experience our guests have cherished for generations,” says Annie. The couple has overseen renovations and updates in the hand-hewn log lodge and added two new guest accommodations, as well as a three-treatment-room spa and outdoor firepit. An enhanced food and beverage program inspired the addition of a new bar, wine cellar and lovely outdoor dining porch designed by Atlanta’s Summerour Architects. Just last year, The Swag joined Relais & Châteaux. Executive chef Jake Schmidt, formerly of Grove Park Inn, excels at creating menus from what’s fresh in The Swag garden and available daily for three sumptuous meals. Noon cookouts on Wednesdays and Saturdays are a veritable feast, when he packs up his kitchen ensemble and orchestrates a gourmet picnic spread at Gooseberry Knob. Selections may include bison and beef burgers and mahi-mahi on the grill, cast-iron fried chicken and a smorgasbord of colorful salads, fresh-cut fruit and tempting sweets for dessert. Schmidt also offers cooking classes featuring seasonal ingredients. Special events highlighting regional culture are a long-standing tradition at The Swag. Throughout the season from April to November, naturalist-led hikes and presentations on nature, local history, art, music and storytelling are offered to enhance guests’ experience and discovery of the Smokies. But equally appealing, most would agree, is taking time to feel the serenity of the amazing setting—to unwind in one of the hideaway nooks or a comfy chaise on one’s private porch. theswag.com

RESIDENT CHARMER
In the midst of Palm Beach’s glitz and glam, the down-to-earth White Elephant is the peak of chic Written by JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN
WITH ITS STAGGERING concentration of wealth, stretches of sandy beaches, tony designer shops and a reputation as America’s first resort destination, Palm Beach has every right to be stuffy. Instead, White Elephant Palm Beach, the island’s newest boutique hotel, exudes relaxed luxury and warm hospitality. Opened in November 2020, the 13-room and 19-suite property is housed in the former Bradley Park Hotel, constructed in 1924. Outside, the Mediterranean revival building welcomes guests with fresh white stucco, black-and-white awnings and poolside umbrellas and a terracotta tile roof. Inside, the design team has infused it with a mix of original art, smart technology and comfortable touches to make guests feel as though they’re staying in a well-appointed 116
private home—appropriate for a destination that boasts more billionaires than anywhere else in the South. Art aficionados will want to take in the carefully curated collection of more than 120 modern and pop art pieces spread across the hotel’s four floors. Start with the 7-foot-tall white elephant statue outside by Frederick Prescott (its “sister” is at the original hotel in Nantucket) and wander to see works by Robert Rauschenberg, Kenzo Okada and a custom circular piece in the lobby by Orit Fuchs. Carrara marble, brass accents and sheer curtains provide a neutral palette that lets the art shine. Guests craving exploration can plan any number of excursions. The staff will set up chairs and umbrellas on the beach (complete with food and beverage service from
the hotel) just two blocks away. Or, borrow a custom cruiser by Priority Bicycles and pedal along the adjacent 5-mile-long Lake Trail along the Intracoastal Waterway for prime yacht spotting. Hotel guests who want to venture farther can check out one of the property’s BMW 7 Series sedans. Best of all, if sticking close to this elegant home-away-from-home appeals, there’s plenty to love without leaving. From the diminutive plunge pool surrounded by lush tropical flora and serviced by friendly attendants ready to bring a crisp glass of rosé or gratis SunBum sunscreen, to Lola 41, the on-property restaurant, with a mix of ultrafresh sushi and Italian comfort food dishes, this charming hotel proves that you don’t have to be ultrawealthy to vacation like you are. whiteelephantpalmbeach.com

END NOTE IN LOVE WITH...
Summery Greens
There’s a saying that “green is good.” Time and again, nature’s bounty reveals lively variations, proving the color is not just good, but great. From fresh-cut grass to plants at the peak of the season, an array of leafy hues harkens to nature’s remarkable botanical display this time of year. Gracious fabrics, wallpapers and tabletop accessories celebrate the myriad shades that make the season special and blurs the line between indoors and out. —Clinton Smith ■ LUSH LIFE A flourishing tablescape by designer Clary Bosbyshell and verdant landscaping by Land Plus ushers in the summer season.
